Solar glass not only protects the shimmering blue solar cells against detrimental influences but also helps to “catch” as much sunlight as possible
Coating process
Machine producer, Bürkle, based in Southern Germany claims to offer solar glass suppliers a particularly efficient coating process. Compared with more frequently-used spray coating, Bürkle’s roller application machines are said to apply especially homogeneous fluid films of just 5-15 micrometres thickness to the glass. This process is ideal for avoiding material wastage and achieving a defined layer thickness which is easy to identify through colour deviations.

The Linde E20 to E50 electric forklifts come in 19 different model designs, each equipped to deal with the unique needs of any business. At 140mm lower than your standard electric forklift, these special machines whizz around container yards and low-overhead areas with deft precision, while the Linde Steer Assist mode ensures gravity defying manoeuvrability. Add the fact the E40 and E45 models reach a lift height of 422.5mm, and that their motors are maintenance-free, these forklifts are sure to pique the interest of any prospective buyer. But it doesn’t stop there. With particular emphasis placed on the ergonomic design of these trucks, its operators can be forgiven for feeling a little too cosy in amply padded seats and roomier cabins. Featuring such intelligent technology, it also comes as no surprise that the battery is charged by a neat little on-board charger, just one of the many reasons our E series is causing quite a buzz.

Professor Stachowiak’s work covers a broad range. He has done groundbreaking research on advanced structural ceramics, fretting problems in wire ropes and the evaluation of novel surface coatings to mitigate wear. Professor Stachowiak and his team developed new angularity parameters for particles and surfaces, developed numerical methods to characterize wear particles, followed by the development of automated wear particle classification methods based on their shape and surface texture. Another area of research of Professor Stachowiak and his team has been bio-tribology with a focus on synovial joints, specifically knee joints. His research has led to the development of new computer-based image processing and classification methods for trabecular bone textures in X-ray images of the knee joint. His research has led to the detection and prediction of the onset of osteoarthritis from x-ray images. He has authored or co-authored several books on tribology, including ‘Engineering Tribology’, a textbook of which the fourth edition was published in November 2013. Professor Stachowiak is a Fellow of the STLE and ASME and is the 2014 recipient of the Tribology Gold Medal – the world’s highest honour in Tribology.

New Overhead Crane Konecranes recently launched a new overhead crane which is available in South Africa as of January 2015. The new crane, the CXT Uno, has been developed to give small and mediumsized customers in emerging markets access to Konecranes’ proven technology. The CXT Uno is primarily intended for companies operating in manufacturing, construction, and logistics. The crane is based on the company’s existing CXT hoist and combines a strong range of features based on a simpler set of components and technical solutions compared with existing CXT products. This simpler design, together with easy access to spare parts, means that the CXT Uno will be easy to maintain. Says John MacDonald of Konecranes South Africa, “The CXT Uno offers customers in this category quality and
reliability in what we believe is a very attractive and competitive overall package. We are confident that it will be a very popular crane in Southern Africa.” Capable of lifting loads up to 10 tons up to 9 metres off the ground, the crane features a 2-speed hoisting and travelling design with a fixed pendant controller, tagline festooning, and compact singlegirder construction, and can operate over
spans of up to 20 metres. The design draws on input collected in the field and prioritises issues such as quality, reliability in both intensive and less-frequent usage, and ease of maintenance. John MacDonald, Tel: (011) 864-2800, Email: john.macdonald@konecranes.com www.konecranes.co.za
