Here’s a big reason you can save even more energy. Etanorm is a classic that keeps getting more efficient. It meets the energy efficiency requirements of the ErP Directive for 2015 already today – for three good reasons: optimised hydraulic components for pace-setting efficiency, individual impeller trimming, and ideally matching drives and automation components. Etanorm is available really fast, comes in numerous variations, and provides the unique reliability of a globally identical product. CAREERS

Prominent Professionals Morrison Maseko, Engineering Manager RSV South Africa.

in two local mines. The method is suitable for mining low grade mineral deposits. This project entails dealing with very large size chunks of raw material, up to 3 cubic metre rocks. This means very big crushers that can also handle flow rates of 2000 tons an hour. As the Engineering Manager and leader of the project team I had to visit mines in Australia where they use these large machines in order to familiarise myself with their specific requirements.

Academic School:

Metebong High School, Klerksdorp.

Graduate studies:

Mechanical Engineering at Wits University.

Post-Graduate:

Morrison Maseko, Engineering Manager RSV South Africa

An MBA at Wits Business School.

Professional Bodies

Registered as professional engineer with ECSA; member of SaiMechE.

Career Path First employer Chemplast.

Growth path

After two months at Chemplast I joined Expro to get into the oil industry. Then I went to M-I Swaco for a couple of years before joining Sasol for about twelve months and then Read, Swatman and Voigt (RSV) in Johannesburg in 2007. After two years at RSV the company established RSV (SA), a company of which I was a founder member. For a brief period I left to work for SNC Lavalin before returning to RSV as Engineering Manager.

Achievements A project

The Anglo American project at Khuseleka Mine. I worked on this project as a design engineer and was responsible for the conveyors, mine dewatering, pump station, and piping design. This project paved the way to registration as a professional engineer with ECSA.

Future – a concept, a dream or a wish

I have two dreams. So far I’ve only been second in command on some of the larger projects, but I’d like to head up a mega-capital project worth billions. Secondly, I’ve always had a special interest in computational fluid dynamics, and I’d like to take that further in the near future. Possibly do my Master’s degree on CFD.

Projects Most challenging

The project I’m currently working is by far the most challenging. It involves block cave mining, a type of mining which was new to the team and quite rare in South Africa, only used

Most Rewarding

The Bathopele platinum mine in Rustenburg. This decline mine was my first project as a consulting engineer. I was thrown in the deep end as the project engineer, but had very little consulting experience as I had mainly been in the maintenance, oil industry and mining until then. Today this project, which is still running, has become a legacy project and the symbol of success for RSV. Although I was a small part in the bigger picture, the workshop I designed has become the benchmark for mining workshops at Anglo.

Commentary Are there shortcomings in the Mechanical Engineering Industry in South Africa?

Mechanical engineering is a critical profession and very underrated. Generally we are not the high flyers who boast about our achievements, yet mechanical engineers are usually the project engineers around which everything on a project revolves. They are the packaging engineers who ensure that all other aspects of engineering, cost, procurement and scheduling is in place on a project.

How would you mend this?

As generalist engineers, the mechanical engineers have to strive to get to the leading positions in companies. In my case, the business degree played a huge role in my getting to where I am, and where to get in future. We must all strive to better our skills in all respects in order to elevate mechanical engineering to higher levels by filling the higher positions in companies.

Message to young engineers

The first two years of a young engineering graduate are the most important because that’s when you learn from what others tell you to do. This is usually the time where you learn by getting your hands dirty in places where you may not go again for the rest of your career. For example, it may be the last time you handle a spanner in an underground situation, but you’ll never forget how things work in that particular situation. Use the opportunities around you to learn during everything you can especially the first two years.
