CAREERS

Prominent Professionals Jasantha Chinappen, Works Mechanical Engineer, Eskom Rotek Roschon

Future – a concept, a dream or a wish

I’ve developed a passion for turbines and I am now refurbishing turbine components; so my vision for the future would most probably be to specialise within the power generation industry.

Academic School:

Arena Park Secondary School in KZN.

Most Challenging Project

Graduate studies:

BSc Eng, Mechanical Engineering, University of KwaZulu Natal.

Post-Graduate:

Honours BSc degree in applied science, specialising in structures at Pretoria University. I also completed a graduate diploma in mechanical engineering at Wits and am now working on degree in mechanical engineering.

Professional Bodies

The most complex project was where we did a modification on a high pressure diaphragm. There were linear indications found on the Jasantha Chinappen, Works ring of the diaphragm and to fix it we had to Mechanical Engineer, Eskom machine out the entire section and replace Rotek Roschon it with a ring insert. This required endless calculations supported by finite element my Masters analysis before we were satisfied that it would work. It turned out to be a huge success in the end.

Registered with ECSA and a member of SAIMechE

Career Path First employer

Rotek Engineering, now known as Eskom Rotek Roshcon.

Growth path

I started as a trainee design engineer, going through a comprehensive training programme for two years, learning each department in the workshops and spending time at various sites which spanned two years. I was then appointed as Design Engineer. After six years of service as a Design Engineer, I opted for my current position as a works engineer.

Present employer & position

Eskom Rotek Roschon as a works mechanical engineer for the refurbishment of turbine components at the Rosherville workshop.

Achievements A project

Most Rewarding Project The rotor guide project was most rewarding because there were many different aspects to it, travelling to site, generating concept CAD models, doing FEA tests, playing around with various calculations, and then it all comes together in a practical solution in the end which is now the standard for rotor guides at all our power stations.

Commentary Are there shortcomings in the Mechanical Engineering Industry in South Africa?

There is a distinct shortage of female engineers in our industry. There is a general misconception that mechanical engineering is a male domain because females are not biologically fit to be mechanical engineers. Women tend to think it is a male only profession, but I found that if you’re confident and portray a strong image, the men immediately respect you and accept you as an equal.

How would you mend this?

I’ve completed several design projects while in the design department. The project work encompassed reverse engineering, modifications and new design of turbine components. One of the most intricate projects that I’ve worked on was the design of rotor guides for the power stations. These guides were conceptualised by the site engineers who felt that they required guides to assist them with dissembling and reassembling of turbine rotors. The design was successful and has turned out to be an essential at all power stations.

Parents and educators should educate students at school level to pursue a career in engineering.

Message to young engineers

My message goes out to the young females contemplating a career in mechanical engineering. Gender bias still does exist in the field of engineering in general, but don’t let this discourage you. Engineers are here to solve problems. Most companies will require you to think like an engineer and not physically be an engineer, so masculinity doesn’t matter.

PROFESSIONALS

The Originator of Celdek速 Evaporative Cooling Media, launches its FCA Range of Coolers in Southern Africa Our FCA series are compact and efficient coolers for climate control of small to large facilities. The technology is based on the natural principle of using water to regulate the temperature and refresh the air. This principle creates a comfortable indoor climate with optimal combination of temperature and humidity. The FCA series available in Southern Africa deliver air-flow from 15,000 m続/hr to 60,000 m続/hr, also allowing several units to be

linked to each other to create the required ventilation for larger facilities. The larger unit, FCA 15 has two air outlet options to provide the customers with maximum flexibility and simplified installation. The mobile version with wheels is only available for the top outlet and includes the air outlet nozzle. FCA 15, 230 VAC 1phase can also be equipped with a 9 speed regulator for the fan as an option.
