PERSPECTIVE

No Point in Being Negative South Africans are currently enduring an extremely financially challenging, and even fraught 2016. But Ian Fraser, Managing Director of RTS Africa Engineering, encourages us to keep things in persepctive.

In many ways, we’ve been here before. The rand dropped in value overnight by about 70% after P.W. Botha’s ‘Rubicon’ speech. Commodities internationally have crashed previously. Both Fitch and Standard & Poor’s kept South Africa at junk status for several years after the advent of democracy,” he says. The answer to the challenges now, as then, is to keep on keeping on: “Down at the ‘coalface’, we just get up in the morning and we go out and do it,” he adds. In his travels, Ian comes into contact with mining clients and several other industries, including the glass, steel and energy sectors. He encounters businesses that are struggling, but also companies that are booming in spite of local and global economic uncertainty.

You have to remain aware of what is changing. The minute you let technology pass you by, you are lost “To give you just one example: we have a fabricator in Pretoria who does all our metal work for us and is extremely busy. So the critical question is: Why are some not able to do it, and others are?” he asks. “I have to say that I believe the key issue here is innovation. You have to remain aware of what is changing. The minute you let technology pass you by, you are lost.”

‘Retiring’ retirement

Ian is sensitive to the challenges posed by skills shortages in South Africa, and deeply regrets the abandonment of the apprenticeship. This system, Ian says, produced superb artisans who made a good living while serving as the bedrock of parastatals such as Sasol and the former Iscor.

Ian Fraser

Now, he finds that qualifications are often not matched by a capacity to function independently and effectively in the workplace. Increased mentoring of young workers by those who have a wealth of experience is one way of addressing this dilemma. However, retaining institutional memory will require adjustments in how society views people in their 60s and 70s, and a change in the way they see themselves. “One of the thoughts I have had for quite a number of years is that the world must stop conditioning people from the time they get a job that they are going to work so they can retire as soon as possible. Retirement is a fairly modern concept, actually. We should work until we cannot work, like people have done throughout most of humanity’s time on earth.” In addition, Ian believes that the amount of ‘red tape’ or bureaucracy that is currently required to set up a company is simply unacceptable, adding that business has done a poor job of lobbying government to take action on matters which undermine growth and job creation. In summary, he advises, “There is obviously massive opportunity here, and we have to go out and get it. There is absolutely no profit or advantage to be gained from being negative.” RTS Africa Engineering, Tel: (012) 433-6335 www.rtsafrica.co.za

Know Before You Buy. Uncertainty of a concept is one of the largest problems we are facing today when installing a warehouse or Distribution Centre. Universal Storage Systems (SA) (Pty) Ltd has come up with an innovative solution. Not only do we have staff who offers more than 20 years in concept development, but now we have integrated software in our design stage which will show the concept before it enters development stage.

SUPPLY CHAIN BUYERS GUIDE

2014/15

Feasibility studies Once a large warehouse or distribution center has received been advised by logistics consultants, Universal Storage Systems enter and offer optimised solutions. Our trained sales members with SEMA certification and engineers who meet ISO 9001 standard will create solutions meeting storage needs. Matthew Szendrei one of our Sales Representatives explains how he offers

solutions: “Ask a lot of questions and speak to the customer about their needs, know our products, visit the factory so you know what there is and what works.” Once the optimal solution has been created our design team creates a concept and design for each customer. CAD design software integrated with Universal’s own creative design generator creates a virtual walk through for customers of the warehouse. Once the software is complete it will be able to generate concepts faster and allow greater certainty surrounding final products. Guiding a buyer is a tremendous feat, showing them what they are buying opens a new door.

An accessible and clear guide on how to grow your business through export

E

ngineers receive a broad education in the nuts and bolts of machinery, equipment and systems but not much attention is paid to the commercial aspects of running an engineering concern.

“Engineering World”, a new annual publication being produced by Promech Publishing, in co-operation with the SACEEC (SA Capital Equipment Export Council), will serve to make financial and commercial decisions easier for engineers to make. The publication will focus on the export market but also on local content as a reliable tier of suppliers and supplier industries is vital to local manufacture. SACEEC will share its experience and expertise on a variety of elements that must be taken into account to become a successful exporter, such as:

Freight forwarding Tax matters Forward cover Deciding on what to sell to whom The culture and customs of the export destination country Building a robust supply chain The financial implications of exporting Marketing internationally Building a presence in the destination country Getting the correct legal advice. The SACEEC has assisted many companies in navigating the pitfalls of going over our borders. They remain committed to growing South African exports and have generously agreed to share their knowledge with the readers, in the interests of the country and our economy.

Eric Bruggeman, MD of SACEEC: “What you didn’t think to

ask? We trust that this first-of-its-kind publication will prompt capital equipment companies, who are contemplating the export route, to ask the right questions before setting off on what can only be described as an exciting and potentially lucrative journey.”
