The pipe can take pressures up to 80bar, and was successfully tested at 100 bar. It is a light, secure and practical way of installing borehole pump units. It is just as simple to remove the pump if necessary. In this position the stainless steel spring can be pushed into the groove to secure both pipes together.

Installation procedure

The Beckert Borehole Pipe is installed with the male adapter facing upwards and the female adapter downloads. In this position the male adapter pipe is clamped and the female pipe is fitted and lifted onto the male pipe. The advantages include: • The water gets drained completely out of the pipe so there is no water in the connection • The water flows inside the pipe from the male to the female resulting in a secure connection • With this system the silting up of the connection (adapters) is prevented, even for long term installations • Minimal corrosion is possible • Minimal growth of bacteria

ment, not only of farming equipment, but also the production of food. Being involved in the manufacture of bulk handling equipment now makes it quite a realistic challenge in terms of grain handling systems which can be designed.

Career Path Dirk Botha

Growth path

After four years at Armscor in Pretoria I joined military vehicle manufacturer, OMC (Olifant Manufacturing Company) which later became Reunert OMC. Here I gained valuable experience in the manufacture of military vehicles including participating in the development of the Olifant tank. I then joined Silverton Engineer for seven years as engineering manager. After that I did contract work for several companies including some work in the railway industry. Then I joined Scania for seven years before moving to Schaeffler South Africa for four years before joining Birkenmayer as operational manager. After two years, I opted for my current position at AMD-Rotolok.

Achievements A project

I was fortunate to have a part at one stage of working on the development of the Olifant tank developed by OMC. I also took part in the development of the G6 Howitzer Artillery gun made by Armscor. However, one project which stands out is the chance I had to actively take part in the development of copper-brass radiator technology at Silverton Engineering. At the time aluminium radiators became the norm, but we developed a copper-brass version to achieve a much more efficient heat exchanging function. This became the standard radiator for a leading German luxury automotive manufacturer’s cars made in the Eastern Cape. In terms of heavy machinery we developed interesting rail machines at Lennings Rail which are used for maintenance of the overhead lines. These were unique vehicles designed and built from scratch.

Future – a concept, a dream or a wish

Having grown up on a farm, I have always had a soft spot for the agricultural industry where there are an abundance of opportunities to look at mechanisation of farming equipment. Currently South African farmers are mechanising at an incredible rate, creating interesting challenges for a mechanical engineer to get in on the act of contributing to the develop-

During my term at Birkenmayer we designed a machine which recirculates the wet waste gases coming off steel furnaces. The challenge on this project was on the electrical side of the mechanical system we designed. It was magnificent how it all came together in the end when I realised that the electrical system wasn’t as complicated as we anticipated. It left me in awe to experience how the electrical system actually pulled everything together to make the mechanical operation of our design function successfully.

Most rewarding

The cooling system we developed at Silverton Engineering. We took the project over from another company, leaving the field wide open to explore the boundaries of copper-brass technology. To do this I went to Japan to purchase the required manufacturing machinery to make the radiators using this technology. Although copper-brass wasn’t new technology, we improved the manufacturing process to such an extent that the more efficient copper-brass radiators could be used in luxury cars for many years to follow.

Commentary Are there shortcomings in the Mechanical Engineering Industry in South Africa?

Engineers in general and mechanical engineers in particular, need more recognition for what they do. Mechanical engineering in South Africa specifically seems to have stagnated compared with other engineering disciplines. Elsewhere in the world, the work of mechanical engineers is distinguished, making it an attractive proposition for South African engineers to go overseas for more interesting challenges and a wide scope of opportunities. If we really want to become an industrial country, the highlyqualified engineers who can really do the work, need to be recognised.

Message to young engineers

It is important for young engineers to consider management training. There is a dire need for managers in South Africa who have a strong technical background. HAVASWW-D63104/E
