The conflict between minimised project costing and lifecycle costing ● How should lifecycle information be collected and used for future benefits? ● Rates of return. ● The error of measuring project progress by earned value or capital expended. ● The reasons why the majority of projects overrun time and budget. ● Managing the perceptions of other professions. Dean Sawich, Developer and Presenter Educated at Ferris State University, USA, Dean holds an Associate’s Degree in Applied Science in Refrigeration Heating & Air-Conditioning Service Technology, and a Bachelors of Science Degree in Trade and Technical Education. The Workshop takes the delegate through the various processes involved in the design of ducted air conditioning, ventilation, and extraction systems. It begins with an overview of underlying principles and their application, and then proceeds to examine and explain the effects of duct design and layout on the movement of air, with examples of good and poor systems. Methods for achieving proper air distribution are covered as well as problematic designs. Types of fans, their various characteristics, applications and selection are explained, along with how to achieve the best performance from a fan. The basic duct design procedure is discussed in conjunction with its effect on system pressures and fan selection. The workshop concludes with a discussion of sound properties, measurement, and attenuation methods.

An accessible and clear guide on how to grow your business through export
E
ngineers receive a broad education in the nuts and bolts of machinery, equipment and systems but not much attention is paid to the commercial aspects of running an engineering concern.
“Engineering World”, a new annual publication being produced by Promech Publishing, in co-operation with the SACEEC (SA Capital Equipment Export Council), will serve to make financial and commercial decisions easier for engineers to make. The publication will focus on the export market but also on local content as a reliable tier of suppliers and supplier industries is vital to local manufacture. SACEEC will share its experience and expertise on a variety of elements that must be taken into account to become a successful exporter, such as:
Freight forwarding Tax matters Forward cover Deciding on what to sell to whom The culture and customs of the export destination country Building a robust supply chain The financial implications of exporting Marketing internationally Building a presence in the destination country Getting the correct legal advice. The SACEEC has assisted many companies in navigating the pitfalls of going over our borders. They remain committed to growing South African exports and have generously agreed to share their knowledge with the readers, in the interests of the country and our economy.
Eric Bruggeman, MD of SACEEC: “What you didn’t think to
ask? We trust that this first-of-its-kind publication will prompt capital equipment companies, who are contemplating the export route, to ask the right questions before setting off on what can only be described as an exciting and potentially lucrative journey.”

Cable Reeling Solutions Powermite’s cable reeling systems are extremely versatile. “Our cable reeling equipment is manufactured in a variety of materials including painted steel, stainless steel, and hot dip galvanized surfaces, to suit a wide range of applications such as indoor, outdoor, dusty, corrosive or specific environmental conditions,” says Donovan Marks, marketing and sales director. “The length of the systems can be increased or decreased and they can be applied to low speeds (5m/min), or high speeds (120m/min), over distances ranging from 1m to over a 1 000m.”
the specification of the main gearbox unit is directly related to the size and type of reel. The spring units are provided with a flange for mounting onto structures, frames or walls. Encased in a steel housing with safety anchors, each spring has an operational duty cycle of 80 000 operations. Slip rings are mounted onto the shaft supported by greased-for-life bearings, ensuring a maintenance-free cable reeling solution.

The company has supplemented its spring driven, torque motor and permanent magnet clutch drives with Variable Speed Drive (VSD) technology that enables all the drives to provide a constant torque to ensure the cable is protected and kept out of harm’s way during winding and un-winding functions. The main gearbox unit located inside the motorised reeling drum carries the slip ring assembly, the spool and the drive units. Due to its supporting function,

In-house Cylinder Repair Ser vice Actum Industrial offers an in-house cylinder repair service for its range of premium Waircom products. It is also able to customise cylinders for specific customer specifications and applications, as well as refurbish cylinders.
Geoffrey adds that what distinguishes Actum Industrial in this highly competitive sector is the value-added services it is able to offer its customers. “We have the flexibility to cater for bigger customers who simply want to replace products when there is a problem, to smaller, more cost-conscious customers who are keen to repair rather than replace.”
Geoffrey Booysen, pneumatics manager, Gauteng Actum Industrial
“It is important to educate our customers on the benefits of preventative maintenance,” Geoffrey Booysen, pneumatics manager: Gauteng, Actum Industrial,
comments. “For example, if an airline is contaminated and supplies dirty air, this could damage the valve and reduce its lifespan.”
While the slump in the value of the rand has seen many customers opting for ostensibly cheaper Asian and Chinese products, Geoffrey warns that the total lifecycle cost ends up being much higher, without the benefit of the 24/7 aftermarket support offered by Actum Industrial.
