Your Decision Jesus came and promised life and that life abundantly. Are you living it? Every promise has its conditions so what is the catch? What do I need to have an abundant life? Jesus. When He was on the earth He preached repentance. Repentance is when we confess the things we have done wrong and the things we should have done that we didn’t do (often called sin) and ask Him to forgive us. Jesus said that if we do that then He will not only forgive us but also cleanse us from every sin. That is why it’s called Good News. The next thing He asks us to do is believe. Only believe. The Bible says that we are saved by faith and not by works. So you don’t have to do anything except believe. God created the world and all that is in it and He made the rules. So we either accept them and put our trust in Him or we reject them. Jesus made it very plain that there is only one way to the Father and that is through Him. You can argue and scheme, but He is God and His word stands. So it is Game On! You are either in or out. If you accept the rules you need to talk to God and tell Him all the stuff you did that you shouldn’t have done and the things you should have done, but didn’t. Do it on your knees as an act of faith and know that His desire is to bless you. He wants you to have abundant life.

PRAY THIS PRAYER TO ACCEPT OR REAFFIRM YOUR ACCEPTANCE OF CHRIST: Father, I’ve come home. Please make me Your son. I confess my sin. I receive Your forgiveness made possible through Jesus Christ by His death and resurrection. I place my faith and trust in Jesus Christ alone. I receive Him as my Saviour and Lord. I want to follow and serve You. Let today be the beginning of my journey as Your son and a member of Your family. In Jesus’ name. Amen

4

What next? After we have prayed that prayer, the Holy Spirit lives within us as sons of God. While we will still struggle with sin and failure, the Holy Spirit’s power helps us overcome areas of bondage to sin and live godly lives. (John 14:16-18, 26; 16:7-14; Romans 6:22) Accepting Jesus Christ as your Saviour is the first step in a process of discipleship and transformation. To grow further it is important to: • Be baptised in water as soon as possible. • Get involved in a Spirit-led, Bible-believing church fellowship. • Join a Men’s Small Group for encouragement, accountability and discipleship in your new walk with Christ.

Men’s Small Groups What Are Men’s Small Groups? A Men’s Small Group is a group of men who intentionally get together on a regular basis to share what is happening in their lives, discuss how to apply the Bible to everyday situations and to pray together. While Men’s Small Groups come in all different shapes and sizes, it is important to define the exact purpose of the group so that agreement can be reached on its goals. For example, groups may be Bible and fellowship based, project/task orientated or for support and recovery. Some Men’s Small Groups are open groups where men can join or leave at any stage. There are also closed groups, where the membership does not change. Why Are Men’s Small Groups So Important? Men’s Small Groups provide two key things that men need – they help men grow spiritually and they build friendship. When it comes to spiritual growth, men will grow up to seven times faster in a Men’s Small Group than if they just attend church on a weekly basis. This is because men can ask questions and receive feedback in a small group environment. Many men are isolated by their work, circumstances, or by their own choice. They are often not giving the time required to go through the process of receiving the biblical and relational input they need to be truly great disciples of Jesus Christ. However, men who get into a small group come out of isolation, receive biblical input, build real friendships and become part of a ‘Band of Brothers’. It is in a small group environment that men are challenged and equipped to live out the Christian faith with the intensity that was intended. Jesus as Our Model Jesus spent three years walking closely with 12 men, training and equipping them. However, He also had a small group of close friends, Peter, James and John, who He related to more powerfully and closely than He did with His other disciples. Jesus is our model and example – if a small group was important to Him, it should be to us also. Get the best resources available from Promise Keepers. This is how WiseChoices will benefit you and help you grow in your Christian walk: • Easy daily readings that develop regular time with God • A wealth of multimedia resources delivered on the WiseChoices DVD and DVD ROM • Connection with the heart of Promise Keepers • Encouragement during difficult times • Belonging to a community of like-minded men who are open to God’s transforming power • Powerful resources that you can share with others • Change your perspective and grow spiritually

Each month subscribers receive the WiseChoices newsletter as well as their choice of either or both of the Men of Integrity 60 day prayer & Bible guide or the WiseChoices DVD. Men are telling Promise Keepers how much they value the regular contact and resources. The DVDs are packed with valuable resources as well as a featured speaker. Also included are panel discussions, dramas, humour and other clips. By using it as a DVD ROM in your computer you can access other articles, books, photos, Men’s Small Group studies, MP3s, iPod videos and website links. Promise Keepers is committed to making these resources available to any man who could benefit from them regardless of his financial circumstances. To do this however, we rely on men who can afford it to contribute. Promise Keepers suggests a contribution of $10 per month. This helps cover the costs involved and makes the resources available to those who cannot afford them. With most of the men contributing, it also helps to support the mission of Promise Keepers financially.

The more wise choices you make, the less regrets you will have!

How do I sign up? 1. Sign up now at the WiseChoices stand in the foyer and take home the current issue! OR 2. Fill out the “I want to be on the Promise Keepers Team” form in this Handbook (page 30). Forms will be collected during the offering on Saturday night. 6

WiseChoices WiseChoices is going around the world and throughout New Zealand. Men are using it in innovative and surprising ways. For many it has become an essential tool for spiritual growth by creating a daily routine of setting time aside for God.

I find WiseChoices to be excellent for today’s busy men. Each day takes only a minute or two to read and absorb. – Daryl I use the Men of Integrity booklet for my daily devotions and have at times found it profoundly challenging and insightful in my walk with God and in how I view my wife. – Jon I have been posting the study along with my responses on a blog as a way of sharing faith with others. – David I use WiseChoices in our men’s group and find it awesome, especially getting the DVDs as I use them as a starting point to some good sharing and discussions. The weekly studies from the DVD are good to use. Our church is using them in all our men’s groups. – George My wife was the one who endorsed subscribing. Something timeless and worth so much to my own personal growth and keeping alive the Promise Keeper values through the year has no price. – Steve A year or so ago one [WC topic] was focused on work. I had just done a sermon on work. I got copies out to many in the congregation and that was a huge blessing to people. Each morning I do a fairly solid Bible study first thing, so I thought at first that Men of Integrity might be a little lightweight. I found it had its own value of letting God inform my life. It was a good reminder that God is more than capable of speaking into multiple levels at once! – Bob

Fishers of Men

Fishers of Men

At the Event this weekend, you will be asked to consider the men you know who need Jesus in their lives. You will then be invited to write their names onto the small cardboard fish and the red wallet card. The card is for you to keep as your reminder. The fish will be collected. Promise Keepers commits to pray each month for the men represented on the fish. Over 66,300 men have been named and prayed for on these fish. “After 4 years of fish, my brother, father and mother have all made a decision for Christ. Only one more brother to go!! Thank you and Praise God.” Trevor, 2010 “Thanks to my brother, who is a true man of God, [he] has been writing my name on one of those fish for seven years now. All his and your prayers were answered on Saturday night at PK because I went forward and gave my heart to the Lord. After years of personal issues and battles with God I was finally able to surrender to Him and say, ‘Take me Holy Spirit and fill me with your love’. “ Dino, 2008

Men’s Team Ministry to Widows & Solos A husband dies or a marriage breaks down. The church rallies around to meet the crisis and support the widow or solo mum. As the months pass people assume that everything is now somehow OK, sort of normal. Usually, however, the huge sense of loss continues and is reinforced by many practical problems. From financial management, home and car maintenance to kicking a soccer ball around with the kids, there are ongoing needs that don’t simply disappear. “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.” John 13:34-35 Men’s Team Ministry makes it simple to show God’s love in a practical way. It involves: • A team of 3 to 5 men visiting the same care receiver every month • A time commitment of three hours per month • No special skills This is an ideal outreach opportunity for Men’s Small Groups. It is outward focussed and personally fulfilling. It is relationally based rather than project or task orientated. It is long-term and relational, bringing stability and security to people with turbulent lives. Men’s Team Ministry also gives the care receivers an opportunity to tell others about the regular team visits. The outworking of the team’s Christian faith is a strong witness to neighbours and friends. Join with the churches that are already making an impact. Orientation kits, training and support are available from Promise Keepers.

Profile of a Promise Keeper Being a Promise Keeper is about being a man of integrity. A man whose words and deeds match up. There is no room for smoke and mirrors. What you see is what you get. The seven promises are at the heart of what it means to be a Promise Keeper. In fact, they are really at the heart of what it means to be a follower of Jesus Christ. Whilst the seven promises can be lived out any number of ways, we want to tell you about the kind of man we see as a Kiwi Promise Keeper. This man walks with God. He is a man of prayer and a man of the Word. His prayer life includes praying with and for his wife, for his family, his pastor and others. He shares this personal relationship with God in a small group of friends and is learning to be transparent with them so that God can work in his life. This Promise Keeper is facing up to his struggles and dealing with temptations that have held him back. He is committed to loving and leading his family and puts a premium on time with his wife and kids. This man knows that everything he has belongs to God. He is generous with his time, his talent and his treasure. He doesn’t spend all his money on his car, but what really counts - his family, his church and missions. This man’s pastor thanks God for sending a Promise Keeper to his church. A real Promise Keeper believes that every follower of Jesus belongs to one Church, even if they gather under different names. He doesn’t let tags get in the way. He loves and serves alongside men from any race or denomination. You’ll know this man is a Promise Keeper because he is praying for the lost and invites them to situations where they can know Jesus. His life isn’t just about the here and now - this man has his eyes on eternity! Are you willing to be a Promise Keeper? A Promise Keeper: • Prays for his wife, family, pastor and others • Has real relationships with God and other men • Loves and leads his family • Gives of his time, treasure and talents • Financially supports his church and missions (if able) • Serves with all other Christians • Invites friends to situations where they can know Jesus Perforated for removal>

Why Men? Today’s society creates confusion in men about their identity and what their role is as a man. “What is my purpose in life?”“What does it mean to be a Christian man?” Men are often asking themselves, “Am I a normal Christian man?” So many of men’s natural talents and abilities seems to be at odds with the expectations of the church. Many men have become emotionally isolated from their feelings, physically isolated from other men and lacking real friendships. Men’s competitive nature and their desire to succeed has not helped! It makes answering the questions about what Christian manhood is all about even harder to answer. The two greatest desires of Christian men today are to grow spiritually and to build genuine friendships with other men. Men who are spiritually seeking may go to a great conference or retreat and experience a spiritual high point. After that usually comes the bumpy landing as they try to figure out where they fit into the local church for the next 51 weeks. When you have men actively engaged in the church, they also provide energy and resources for church life, community initiatives and outreach. In almost every church that has closed its doors, it was the men who left first. Conversely, fathers are the most influential people in bringing families into the church. (See graph.) For this reason, every local church needs to have an effective Ministry with Men that grows men spiritually, builds true friendships and equips men for mission.

15

Ministry with Men Strategic Planning Tool Promise Keepers has developed a two-page Strategic Planning Tool which gives an instant picture of where your Men’s Ministry is currently. It also provides an effective process that will propel your Men’s Ministry into the future. Using the information gained from the Strategic Planning Tool enables your Men’s Ministry to chart a way forward that will strengthen friendships and grow your men spiritually and numerically. It enables you to see interconnections between activities so that maximum leverage can be gained to build success. How to Get the Most Out of the Strategic Planning Tool: Although we have found men’s needs and issues are remarkably similar everywhere, each church is different and needs a customised pathway to reach its mission of seeing men transformed by the power of God. Promise Keepers Field Reps or Coaches will work through the Strategic Planning Tool with you step by step. This tool will give you a clear, consistent pathway to building an effective Ministry with Men in your church. Each stage in the document builds upon the previous one. Working through these stages will enable you to identify potential weak areas and allow opportunity for recommendations and advice to strengthen those areas. The results of your activities are predictable and the pitfalls are avoidable! Promise Keepers guidance will mean success, not surprises. Anything worthwhile requires commitment, perseverance and clear goals. Ask about the Strategic Planning Tool at the Coaching stand.

The Twin Pillars of Men’s Ministry Men’s greatest needs today are to grow spiritually and build real friendships with men who can speak truth into their lives. The Twin Pillars of Men’s Ministry graphic shows how a Ministry with Men can achieve this and fulfil the ultimate purpose of the mission we have been called to do. Certain kinds of activities will produce certain kinds of outcomes. If your Ministry with Men consists of breakfasts and social activities, the result will be a group of men who are acquainted with one another, but have limited opportunities for consistent spiritual input. The value of camps, courses and Promise Keepers Events is that they provide a focussed time for men to grow deeper spiritually and begin building genuine friendships. They allow a smooth transition to the next level, which is becoming involved in Men’s Small Groups and mentoring. Here they will become bonded as brothers with other men and grow to be mature disciples of Christ, propelling them towards leadership and mission. The key to the Twin Pillars is that of connection and leverage. How do we connect the activities in our Men’s Ministry in such a way that one level of activity leads to the next? How can we leverage a social event into something deeper? Churches that understand the Twin Pillars will strategically place events and activities one after another, drawing men along a process of deepening friendship and greater spiritual growth. 17

Field Representatives

You can succeed with Men’s Ministry. However, establishing an effective Ministry with Men is challenging for any church - men can be the hardest group to reach. It takes commitment and resources over a period of several years. Many men want to get Men’s Ministry started but are unsure of what to do or how to go about it. At Promise Keepers we have found a way to offer practical help to churches everywhere - and it’s free. Field Representatives have proven ability in succeeding in Ministry with Men. They are all volunteers with diverse life and career experience, who are committed to seeing growth in Ministry with Men and are willing to share from their experience. Promise Keepers Field Representatives: • Will help you to chart a way forward for your Men’s Ministry using key tips, ideas and strategies • Have access to Promise Keepers’ extensive resources • Can understand and relate to the issues in your local environment • Can organise training workshops in your area They are here to give guidance and strategies on the best way to advance your Men’s Ministry. Visit the Field Reps stand or phone Promise Keepers to find out how we can help your Men’s Ministry succeed. Field Representatives Network - another way Promise Keepers is working with local churches so that everyone wins! If you would like to become a Promise Keepers Field Representative talk to the men at the Field Rep/Coaching stand or see the website: www.promisekeepers.org.nz 18

Coaching In sport, an experienced coach can assist a group of athletes to be focused, motivated and encouraged to achieve both short-term and long-term goals. The same principle applies to Ministry with Men in the local church. Promise Keepers is committed to working in partnership with churches to develop Ministry with Men on a regular basis over a sustained period. Promise Keepers Coaching is an established service where experienced Coaches come alongside Pastors and Men’s Ministry Leaders to offer help and advice that will put in place a strong foundation and provide ongoing support. “Before we had Promise Keepers Coaching we found that as a team we weren’t heading in one direction and found ourselves reinventing the wheel. With the guidance of Promise Keepers we have looked at how we should be steering the boat. Now the whole team has a single focus. We have synergy amongst the members and we are heading in the same direction.” Wayne Volk Coaching is designed to bring a strategic focus that will develop and grow a church’s Men’s Ministry helping to give it structure, direction and a dynamic and godly underpinning. The Coach is also facilitator and sounding board for suggestions and ideas. Coaching will help find answers to questions such as: • Why is Men’s Ministry important? • What is God’s calling and purpose for Men’s Ministry in your church? • What do you want to achieve? “Coaching is one of the best investments our church has ever made. The step-by-step advice I have received so far has been amazing. Why reinvent the wheel of Men’s Ministry when Promise Keepers already leads the way?” Peter Paki

Pastor Appreciation Month - October “A Promise Keeper is committed to supporting the mission of his church by honouring and praying for his pastor. PK Promise No.5 Ministers no longer command the respect that they once did. Pastors and their families live under incredible pressures. Their lives are played out in a fishbowl, with the entire congregation and community watching their every move. They are expected to have ideal families, to be perfect people, to always be available, to never be down and to have all the answers we need to keep our own lives stable and moving forward. Those are unrealistic expectations to place on anyone, yet most of us are disappointed when a pastor becomes overwhelmed, seems depressed, lets us down or completely burns out.

What Can We Do? Join with Promise Keepers in focusing on prayer and practical encouragement of pastors this October. For example a congregation went all out on this and did things including flowers, and a huge card signed by everyone in the church; a PowerPoint of the life of the church featuring the pastor; testimonies about his ministry; a standing ovation when he got up to preach; personal thank you messages and a dinner! The people had a great time with lots of humour. The pastor was overwhelmed and embarrassed, but really got the feeling of being appreciated!
