PRESIDENT
As President of the Bradford Catholic Players I am extremely proud to welcome you to our Production of 42nd Street at Bradford's beautiful Alhambra Theatre. Having been involved in all of the Players' shows for over 25 years, it is an unusual experience for me to be sitting on the sidelines this year, watching rather than rehearsing. However, it has given me the opportunity to observe at length the amount of hard work and team effort that goes into building a first class show. We are lucky to have a large team of dedicated members who work behind the scenes and in front of house to support our performers on stage and this year into our Team we welcome a 'New Boy' David Kirk as Director, ably supported by our 'old girl' Sylvia Dowgill as Musical Director and our Choreographer Jacqui Drake Sweiss. Supported by our sponsors, our advertisers and of course you, our audience, we are pleased to be able once again to have fun and share our enjoyment whilst supporting our local charities. I am sure you will enjoy our performance of the most spectacular of ' show biz ' shows and look forward to seeing you again next year for our production of "Beauty and the Beast".

ACT 1
Auditions for 1933's newest show, Pretty Lady, are nearly over when Peggy Sawyer, fresh off the bus from Allentown, Pennsylvania, arrives in New York City with valise in hand. Billy Lawlor, already cast as one of the juvenile leads, notices Peggy and hopes to charm her into accepting a date with him. He informs her she's missed the audition but he can help her bypass that process, but choreographer Andy Lee has no time for Billy's latest conquest and tells her, "Beat it, toots". Embarrassed and flustered, Peggy rushes off, only to slam right into director Julian Marsh himself. One-time star Dorothy Brock, indignant at being asked to audition for a role, is reassured by Julian he merely wants to make sure the songs are in her key. Despite his feeling Dorothy is a prima donna past her prime, he agrees to cast her in order to get financial backing from her wealthy beau Abner Dillon. Outside of the theatre, writer Maggie and chorus girls Anytime Annie, Phyllis, and Lorraine take pity on Peggy and invite her to join them for lunch and some advice. They encourage her to show them a dance routine that is witnessed by a lovestruck Julian, who decides there might be room for one more chorus girl after all. At a pre-production party, Julian learns that Dorothy is seeing old boyfriend Pat Denning behind Abner's back. Knowing this could destroy the show's future, he decides to put an end to the affair. One phone call to an unsavory acquaintance and Denning is visited by a couple of thugs who convince him to break it off with Dorothy. Soon after the show's cast heads to Philadelphia for the out-of-town tryout. On opening night, Peggy trips and crashes into Dorothy, knocking her to the stage. Julian fires the young chorine on the spot.

ACT 2
Dorothy's ankle is broken, and the show may close. The chorus kids, certain Peggy could fill the lead role, find Julian and tell him that Peggy's a fresh young face who can sing and dance circles around Brock. Julian decides it's worth a shot and rushes off to the train station to catch Peggy before she departs. At Philadelphia's Broad Street Station, Julian apologizes to Peggy and asks her to stay and star in Pretty Lady, but she responds that she's had enough of show business and wants to go home to Allentown. Dumbfounded, Julian tries to coax her with the words "Come on along and listen to the lullaby of Broadway....”. After the cast joins him in the serenade, Peggy decides to accept his offer.

• Forced to learn the part in two days, Peggy is on the verge of a nervous breakdown when she has an unexpected visit from Dorothy, who has been watching the rehearsals and realizes beneath her nervous exterior, Peggy is good, "maybe even better than I would have been". She even offers a little friendly advice on how to perform the last song, “About a Quarter to Nine". The opening night curtain is about to rise when Julian, who is completely in love with Peggy at this point, stops by for a last minute lip-lock and pep talk in which he utters the now iconic line, "You're going out there a Juvenile, but you've got to come back a star!". The show is a huge success sure to catapult Peggy into stardom. And even though she's invited to and expected to attend the official opening night party, Peggy decides to go to the chorus party instead. Julian is left alone on stage with only a single ghost light casting his huge shadow on the back wall. He quietly begins to sing, "Come and meet those dancing feet on the avenue I'm taking you to... 42nd Street".

DIRECTORS NOTES Faced with the harsh realities of the current recession, it is not difficult to draw direct parallels with the 1930’s Great Depression. Franklin D. Roosevelt had been inaugurated and told the American Public that the "only thing we have to fear is fear itself". These magic words made confidence the slogan of the time , and Hollywood raced to do its bit to restore the public’s belief in the future by reviving the corpse of the Movie Musical. Billed as a "new deal in entertainment" 42nd Street (1933) was just what the public wanted. Due to the big spectacular musical numbers, the picture was a block buster. In 42nd Street we see just how much work is involved in mounting a musical. Julian Marsh , a middle aged producer, sets out to make what he knows will be his last show. But his female lead, Dorothy Brock, breaks her leg on the night before the opening. He therefore promotes a talented but inexperienced girl (Peggy Sawyer) from the chorus line , rehearses
her for a day and with the words "Sawyer, you’re going out there a juvenile but you’ve got to come back a Star!" sends her out onto the stage! The production numbers are superb and culminate in the final number (from which the picture took its title) intended to portray New York’s fast paced and decadent night life. The picture had an immediate attraction for audiences of the 1930’s. It told a harsh story of struggle and hard work. It told the story with bitter wisecracks and played against a tawdry backdrop of stage rehearsals. In the midst of the exuberant song and dance routines, it sounded a grim note - a hard faced Julian Marsh knowing that his life’s work is over. In all, the film dealt with tough realities that Depression-era audiences understood and that aroused a definite emotional response in them. When these realities blended with the big escapist production numbers, 42nd Street became a perfectly but eerily balanced Depression Product.
DIRECTOR David Kirk
The stage production, opening on Broadway in August 1980 recreated the classic 1933 backstage movie perfectly following its cliché riddled model with a minimum of camp but a maximum of lively chorus girls dancing their shoes off to some of the most enchanting songs ever to come out of Hollywood. Among changes from the movie were the ending, which now indicated a possible romance between Peggy and the hard driving Director rather than juvenile lead Billy Lawlor, and nine more Harry Warren Songs which were added to the four numbers retained. Fast forward to the present recession and I think you’ll agree that particularly in the hands of the multi talented Bradford Catholic Players, 42nd Street is just as effective a tonic now as it was in the Depression!
So sit back and enjoy... 42nd Street!!!

In Memoriam John Buffham As one of our Honorary Life Vice Presidents and past Presidents, John’s contribution to the work of the society has been recognised for some time; since he played a significant and integral role in the evolution of the ‘Players’. On stage, as a principal performer, few could match his presence or his timing and delivery of the many facets of the roles he fulfilled and yet he was equally at home as a member of the chorus in productions or concerts across the region. In the 1950’s the BCP took the radical step to move their November production from the Co-op Hall, in Southgate, Bradford to the Alhambra Theatre. John’s vision as Chairman together with decisions taken by his Executive Committees made this possible. John will long be remembered with great affection for his vision, his unstinting service, his encouragement of others, his warmth in welcoming new members and for those qualities which meant he was regarded as one of life’s true gentlemen. As we approach the 50th Anniversary of our first Alhambra production, we reflect on the successes John enabled us to achieve and the many memories associated with them and we pay tribute to him in this respect in light of the monumental decisions made all those years ago. We offer our most sincere love to Elizabeth and his family and we will ensure that the ideals John upheld will continue to influence the various activities we undertake.
