E G A P S T N E D I PRES Dear Friends, It is with great pleasure that on behalf of the family of The Bradford Catholic Players, I welcome you to this beautiful building, The Alhambra, in which we are privileged to present the Broadway Version of Gilbert and Sullivan's "The Pirates of Penzance". This is our 45th production at this theatre in this, our 78th year as an amateur society. The production is once again in the very capable hands of Bev Jones, our Director and the wonderful music and singing is under the baton of Sylvia Shepherd our Musical Director. Since June, our rehearsal rooms have housed a galleon which was lovingly built by our Back Stage Team and was carried on a float in The Lord Mayors Parade.

DENonTe I S E R P eatherst Pat F

Our talented members who appear on stage are ably supported by our many members front of house and back stage, in props, wardrobe, make-up, selling tickets, handling publicity, making tea and supporting at rehearsals etc.. To all of these unsung heroes and heroines I say "Thank you" and also to you our patrons who support us loyally every year. I am looking forward to greeting you during the week of the show and can promise you an enjoyable outing.

F ORY O ANCE T S E TH ENZ S OF P E T A R I THE P

ACT 1

Our story begins when the Pirates explode onto the beach of a secluded cove to celebrate the coming of age of the pirate apprentice, Frederic. However, the mood quickly changes when Ruth, Frederic’s nanny, confides to the Pirate King that Frederic joined the crew by mistake. This is compounded when Frederic declares that not only is he leaving the pirates for good, but will return and exterminate them all!

"Pour, O Pour the Pirate Sherry" Pirates & Samuel "When Frederic was a Little Lad" Ruth "Oh, Better Far to Live and Die" Pirate King & Pirates "Oh, False One,You Have Deceived Me" Frederic & Ruth

The Pirate King makes quick his escape but not before making sure that Ruth, who has her marital eye on the young hero, goes with Frederic who is happy to go along with the arrangement until he spies a bevy of beautiful sisters, in particular, Mabel, who is the most forward of the delicate young flowers. They fall instantly in love which leaves the other girls more than a little jealous. This doesn’t last though as the pirates once again take to the stage to whisk the girls away and marry them on the spot. Luckily, the father of the girls, Major General Stanley is on hand to save the day.

"Climbing Over Rocky Mountain" Girls, Edith & Kate "Stop,Ladies,Pray!" Frederic, Edith, Kate & Girls "Oh,Is There Not One Maiden Breast" Frederic, Mabel & Girls " Poor Wandering One !" Mabel & Girls "What Ought We to Do" Edith, Kate & Girls "How Beautifully Blue the Sky" Girls, Mabel & Frederic

Our Pirate King is vexed until he reads in an old manuscript that Frederic was to be his apprentice until his 21st birthday, unfortunately, Frederic was born on the 29th of February and with a birthday every 4 years, he’s just over 5 and will have to join his old comrades once more. Once back with the Pirate King he tells of how the Major General had tricked the pirates into letting his daughters go, incensed, the Pirate King orders a raid on the baronial castle in which the girls and their father live.

"Stay,We Must Not Lose Our Senses" Frederic, Girls & Pirates "Hold Monsters" Mabel, Samuel, Major General, Girls & Pirates "I Am The Very Model of a Modern Major General" Major-General, Girls & Pirates "Oh,Men of Dark and Dismal Fate" Major-General, Pirate King & Ensemble

Mabel and her father prepare for an attack by enlisting the help of the local constabulary who have more in common with the Keystone Kops than The Sweeny! After a wild battle a subtle twist in the tail brings things to a happy ending for all...

S E I R A U T I B O Right Rev. Mgr. M. V. Sweeney This year saw the passing of The Right Rev.Mgr.Morgan V.Sweeney. Mgr Sweeney was long serving Vice President later being elevated to the position of Honorary Life Vice President. This former Head Master of St.Bede's Grammar school was a long term, offstage supporter of the Players and was guest of honour at many an Annual Dinner. Bernard Parry In 2005 we also lost Bernard Parry,a former performing member,Vice President and, most recently,Patron of the Society. Bernards name could often be seen at the bottom of many a theatre column in the Telegraph & Argus. We are sure that Bernard's close ties to the Players never coloured his artistic judgement and that his critique of our shows were carried out with the same integrity he applied to the many other societies who benefited from his work. Our thoughts and prayers are with his widow Mary and all his family.
