elcome to St George’s Hall and our production of Brigadoon. We have lived the last four months with fingers crossed, praying that this show could go ahead and fearing that Brigadoon may not re-appear out of the mist this January! The Society must thank Bradford Metropolitan Council, the contractors and the staff of St George’s Hall for pulling out all the stops in replacing the ceiling and getting the Hall back in use on a very tight schedule. We trust that this beautiful Hall will remain available for us and many other shows for years to come. We are delighted that due to your excellent support of the Society for our productions of Mack and Mabel and our Youth Pantomime Peter Pan we are able to donate this week, £4000 to local charities. We welcome back for a second year our talented production team of Ian, Steve and Janet, and we are delighted to report that they will be back again next year for our production of Crazy for You. Our Youth Pantomime this year is Aladdin and will be staged at Cleckheaton Town Hall on 5th, 6th and 7th April. Please make a note of these dates and the change of venue. Hope to see you all there. Once again, thank you for your continued support, enjoy the show and come again next year.

Whatever the age of the participants, or the on or off stage talent they have to offer, they are involved in amateur theatre for the love of it. Those appearing will have given many hours to rehearse their contribution, the stage crew are vital to bringing the show alive on stage whilst committee members and front of house staff all contribute to the challenge of staging a production. Each production created becomes a truly community project. With Area and National Conferences, workshops, seminars, the publication of a quarterly news magazine and regional publications, NODA provides the national network for all areas of amateur theatre in the UK. On Thursday 29th January, we welcome our new Regional Representative Miss Debbie Caroll. We are grateful for her visit and hope that she and her guests enjoy the performance.

Despite the impact of the big American musicals such as ‘Oklahoma’, post-war audiences still seemed ready for a touch of fantasy and escapism. 1947 saw the openings of two such whimsical productions, ‘Finian’s Rainbow’ and ‘Brigadoon’. The first major success for the writing partnership of Alan J. Lerner and Frederick Loewe, Brigadoon
The Story of Brigadoon
ran for almost 600 performances on Broadway before opening at His Majesty’s Theatre, London, in April 1949. It was the first musical to be chosen as Best Play by the New York Drama Critics’ Circle and its Dance Director, Agnes De Mille won a Tony award for her stunning routines. It has enjoyed several revivals in both New York and London and in 1954 was produced as a film starring Gene Kelly and Cyd Charisse. Brigadoon was inspired by the writings of James Barrie and its plot is very similar
to
a
German
story,
‘Germelshausen’. It tells the story of two Americans who lose their way in the Highlands and stumble upon the village of Brigadoon, which comes to life for only one day in every hundred years. Tommy and Jeff arrive just in time for the wedding of Jean MacKeith and Charlie Cameron and by the time they discover the truth about the village, Tommy is already deeply in love with Jean’s sister, Fiona. She cannot leave Brigadoon or else ‘the miracle’ will end and he cannot quite find the courage to stay. He returns to New York but is unable to pick up the threads of his old life and travels back to Scotland to see if, by some miracle, he can be reunited with his lost love. DEB
