Dear Friends,

W From the Chairman - Tony Gregson

elcome to our production of ‘Me & My Girl’. This has always been one of my favourite musicals. I had the pleasure of appearing in our 1970 production and it brings back many happy memories. Although the show has been re-written and our productions are bigger and more lavish these days, the Society remains in many ways the same. We are still very family orientated and this I am sure, has greatly contributed to our success over the years. Last year the Society was able to donate £4360 to local charities as a result of our performances of 42nd Street, Jack and the Beanstalk and Bellas we hope hope that we will be able to donate a similar amount this year. This is the Society’s 70th anniversary year and we should be delighted to see members and patrons who have supported us in the past at our Celebration Luncheon on the 14th April 2002 at the Guide Post Hotel, Bradford. My best wishes,

Tony Gregson Chairman

NODA & Awards

Patron - Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother The National Operatic and Dramatic Association was formed in 1899 to bring together members of amateur operatic and dramatic societies ‘for mutual assistance and combined benefit’. Membership is made up of 2200 affiliated member societies and also 2500 individual members. They share information through magazines, annual residential summer schools, regional and national conferences and an advisory and emergency service. NODA is unique in being entirely self supporting. On Saturday 26th January 2002, the society are honoured to welcome the National President of NODA, Mr Reg Vinnicombe and his wife to our evening performance. This will be the first time in our seventy-year history that we have had the honour of the National President at one of our productions. He will be accompanied by his successor as Councillor for the North East Area, Mr Chris Ingram and his wife. On Thursday 24th January, we welcome the Regional Representative, Miss Joan Lofthouse. We are very grateful for their visits and hope they and their guests enjoy the performances.

The Story of Me & My Girl & Previous Productions

Me & My Girl

T

he plots of most musicals can be summarised as boy meets girl and falls in love, but when ‘Me and My Girl’ opens the boy has already found his girl. The problem for our hero is keeping hold of her in the face of some fairly strong family opposition. Lupino Lane was the first to star as Bill Snibson, the cheeky cockney who suddenly finds himself catapulted into the English aristocracy. Bill is determined to stay true to his girl, Sally, but his aunt, the Duchess, is equally determined to turn him into an aristocrat, complete with a suitable consort. Cousin Jacqueline does all in her considerable powers to ensnare him but true love triumphs in the end, with a little help from some friends. This was the first musical ever to be televised live from a theatre and its cheerful storyline and catchy melodies have delighted audiences ever since it first opened at the Victoria Palace in December 1937. Stephen Fry’s 1985 rewrite proved equally successful when it opened at the Adelphi with Robert Lindsey in the leading role and several extra Noel Gay melodies in the musical score. So sit back and enjoy a lively and lighthearted stroll down Lambeth Way to watch our Bill and his girl be ‘happy ever after’.
