PRESIDENTS MESSAGE It is always a great pleasure to welcome you to our latest production and I am delighted once again that I am able to do this. For some years a number of our members have been pleading with us to produce “Calamity Jane” so now their wishes have been granted, for this is the first time the show has been presented by our Society – or as we are now named The Idle & Thackley Theatre Group. We have assembled a strong group of principals ably supported by our chorus, which includes a number of new young members whom we trust will be with us for many years. I give an unqualified welcome and thanks to them all. The production is as ever under the control of our Director Michael Kirby, Musical Director Catherine Sweet, Stage Manager Betty Woodrow, and our pianist David Gowing. I do thank you all for your continuing support and please let me advise you not to miss the “Deadwood Stage”. It may be some little time before it returns! With all my very best wishes.

THE STORY Calamity Jane centres around Calamity’s effort to save from ruin Deadwood’s entertainment venue, The Golden Garter, by bringing the singing star Adelaide Adams, to perform there. Calamity promises the patrons of the Garter that she will personally bring Miss Adams back from Chicago. In Chicago she mistakes Miss Adams’ maid Katie Brown for the star. After crossing dangerous terrain, the two arrive in Deadwood to tremendous fanfare. The people of the town are delighted that Calamity kept her word. Especially pleased are Lt. Danny Gilmartin and Wild Bill Hickcok, who both immediately take a liking to Miss Adams On opening night Katie goes on stage and gives a disastrous performance. A disappointed crowd boo her after she confesses that she has deceived them. Calamity comes to her rescue and pleads with the crowds to give her another chance. Katie and Calamity become close friends. But when Gilmartin becomes smitten with Katie, Calamity becomes jealous and orders Katie to leave town. Calamity then begins to see Bill in a different way, as the man she has s“ ecretly” loved all along. When Calamity realises that Katie has actually left town, she vows to bring her back. She succeeds and a happy ending ensues
THE REAL CALAMITY JANE Did you know that Calamity Jane was born Martha Canary in Princeton, Missouri in 1856? Journeying to the gold fields of Montana with her parents in 1864 she and her siblings were often left to fend for themselves. By 1869 both parents were dead and there is evidence that Martha was alone in the small Union Pacific railroad camp of Piedmont, Wyoming, probably working in a boarding house. The first historical record of Martha using the name of Calamity Jane is when she accompanied a geological expedition into the Black Hills in 1875. When she arrived back in Laramie in 1876 she was arrested for drunkenness after celebrating with the soldiers. It was suggested that she return to the Black Hills with another expedition passing through Laramie. Her most illustrious travelling companion was Wild Bill Hickok. They arrived in Deadwood in July 1876 and set up camp. Despite the fact that she was a coarse woman, adept at profanity, and drunk a great deal of the time, she was also known for her kindness. She helped nurse the ill during the 1878 smallpox epidemic. Following Bill’s death she stayed in the Black Hills for three years. After 1880 she spent most of her time in Wyoming and Montana, visiting the Black Hills again briefly in 1885-86, finally returning in 1903. She died in a small mining town near Deadwood from complications due to alcohol poisoning on August 1st 1903, and is buried in Mount Moriah Cemetery next to Wild Bill Hickok. SF

The Production Team MICHAEL KIRKBY (Director) Michael began his career in the theatre at the age of 13, and has appeared in over 100 musicals having directed and choreographed 38 His favourite role is Kipps in “Half A Sixpence” a part he has played 7 times. His television credits include “Junior Showtime”, “Flaxton Boys” “Justice” “Queenie’s Castle”, “Follyfoot Farm” and “Emmerdale”. He also played the part of Angelo in Fat Sam’s Gang in the film “Bugsy Malone” Michael’s next production will be “The Boyfriend” with Harrogate O.P’s We are pleased to welcome back Michael for his seventh production with Idle & Thackley T.G.
CATHERINE SWEET (Musical Director) Calamity Jane has always been a favourite of mine. Everyone knows the music, it is funny – a little bit silly, but has the “feel good” factor. You can’t beat boy and girl “hate” each other, sing a few songs and end up in love – if only real life was that simple! Also, this show gives me a chance to sit down occasionally. The past two shows I have had the pleasure to musically direct, “Seusical”, “Spend Spend Spend, have been complete sing throughs with little or no libretto. It is fantastic to be involved with such new and interesting shows, but tiring on the arms and feet! I hope you have a thoroughly, enjoyable evening, and leave humming the wonderful songs.
DAVID GOWING (Rehearsal pianist) David is a freelance IT Trainer. He is a popular and valued member of Idle & Thackley Theatre Group. Calamity Jane will be the thirteenth show he has served as accompanist. He has also accompanied Leeds Amateurs and Pudsey Trinity AOS. David is the Musical Director for the Society’s “Revue’s” performed annually in the “Little Theatre” Idle, in the autumn. In 2001 he was awarded a national bursary to attend the Musical Directors course at the NODA Summer School.

Fax: 0870 770 2490 website: www.noda.org.uk
The National Operatic and Dramatic Association (NODA) was founded in 1899 and has a membership of over 2,300 amateur societies and 3000 individual enthusiasts throughout the UK, staging musicals, operas, plays, concerts and pantomimes in a wide variety of performing venues, ranging from the country’s leading professional theatres to tiny village halls. NODA is divided into eleven Areas, each headed by an Area Councillor who sits on the National Council (the ruling body of the Association), supported by a network of Regional Representatives. These 180 volunteers are the vital link to the grass roots of the Association, the amateur theatre companies. The Association is administered from its Headquarters, with a knowledgeable and friendly staff able to deal with virtually any enquiry relating to amateur theatre. There is a broad spectrum of ages involved in amateur theatre nationwide, from a burgeoning number of youth groups to adult companies which meet the needs of all levels of both performers, whether dramatic or musical, and enthusiasts involved backstage, front of house or in administration. Each production created is a genuine community event. NODA aims: To give a shared voice to the amateur theatre sector To help amateur societies and individuals achieve the highest standards of best practice and performance To provide leadership and advice to enable amateur theatre to tackle the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century Benefits of membership include access to NODA’s advice service at National and Area level, representation to government, funding agencies, rightsholders and the media, and access to conferences, workshops and seminars to help share information on best practice. NODA also holds an annual residential Summer School (with bursaries available) offering training from professional tutors in drama performance, music directing, musical theatre, stage management and other courses for performers, directors and technicians. It publishes regular Area magazines and its quarterly NODA National News, and holds annual National and Area Programme and Poster Competitions, to encourage the highest standards in design. The NODA Library and Meeting Room provides access to a comprehensive research archive of scores, libretti and reference books, as well as an attractive room for meetings. NODA’s trading arm, NODA Limited, acts as a mechanism for raising additional funds for the Association. Its publishing department, NODA Pantomimes, offers over 85 entertaining scripts by such popular authors as Leonard Caddy, Peter Denyer, Stephen Duckham, Ron Hall, Robert Marlowe, John Morley and David Swan, and other publications including an exciting new musical The Slipper and the Rose, and practical guides for performers and directors. Its Sheet Music Service can supply popular and obscure songs, some out of print. It also offers Long Service Awards, and discounts on playscripts, libretti and scores, theatre books from the catalogue of A & C Black, makeup from Charles H. Fox, and telephone bills through Class Systems by up to 50% below the BT standard rate (with 5% of all call charges donated to NODA).
NODA Insurance, in conjunction with AXA, offers the best insurance package for amateur societies (30% discount to NODA members). Telephone 0870 241 1086 for further details.
