Dear Friends,
It is 26 years this week since the Society last staged this show at the Library Theatre. Cast in the leading roles of Julie and Carrie were Anne Tonks and Julie Burrows. This year it is their daughters, Kathryn and Jennifer who are playing those same parts, which proves two things, we really are a ‘family society’ and that talent is indeed inherited! We, along with many other societies, are finding it increasingly more difficult to make a profit on our productions, so our charitable donations are becoming smaller than in recent years, but nevertheless, cheques will be presented this week by our President Rita Horner to St Paul’s Church, The Lord Mayors Appeal, and to The Candlelighters. The Lord Mayor of Bradford Councillor Val Binnie will attend our performance on Thursday evening along with the Dean of Bradford, the Very Reverend David Ison, the Vicar of St Pauls’ Church, the Reverend David Griffiths, together with representatives from NODA and our neighbouring societies. May I take this opportunity to thank you for your continued support, I hope you enjoy being with us tonight, and have a safe journey home. With my best wishes,
Tony Gregson - Chairman
We are pleased to welcome back for the 4th successive year…

Jack Moody JP Jack had been the Society’s Hon Treasurer from 1992 until his sudden death in April 2005. He kept the Society on a firm financial footing as you would expect from a retired bank manager yet he always kept an open mind and listened to ideas.
Jack was a true gentleman with a dry sense of humour, maybe not always understood by casual acquaintances. He is sadly missed both by the Society as a whole and very much by his many personal friends. TG
Patron - Lord Lloyd Webber The National Operatic and Dramatic Association was founded in 1899 to ‘protect and advance the interests of operatic and dramatic art and of the societies engaged of therein’. Our Society is proud to be a member of NODA which has over 2300 societies and nearly 3000 individual members. The Association with its new headquarters in Peterborough, is able to advise societies on many aspects of amateur theatre and provides tailor-made insurance schemes and has its own extensive library. NODA encourages members to attend its Summer Schools, which consist of drama, stagecraft, opera, stage management, musical direction amongst many other topics. With Regional and National Conferences, workshops, seminars, awards and bursaries, together with the publication of quarterly news magazines, NODA provides the only national network for all areas of amateur theatre in the UK. We are part of the North Eastern region of the Association, our Area Councillor is Mr Chris Ingram and our Regional Representative is Mrs Judith Smith whom we look forward to welcoming to our production this week. Several of our members have over the years received long service medals. These are presented through NODA by the Society, to recognise their valuable contribution to the amateur stage and to their distinguished service to the Society. This year our sole beneficiary is Marion Eastwood, (our prompter for this production) who will receive her 4th Silver Bar, representing a total of 45 years service to the amateur theatre movement.

Obituary, NODA & Awards
He joined the Society as a chorus member in 1964 for Merry Widow, his wife Mavis was playing the lead role and she persuaded him to come along. He was ‘hooked’ and played in every one of our productions for the next 20 years, despite the fact that his work took him to move to South Yorkshire which meant a 50 mile round trip just to attend rehearsals!
Kathryn Tonks – Julie Kathryn began performing at two and by four had joined the Scala Kids. At seven, she joined our Junior Pantomime but unfortunately caught chicken pox and couldn’t participate! She joined the Bradford Youth Players at thirteen and has since played with many local societies such as Idle and Thackley, Keighley, and Spenborough Amateurs. One of her favourite parts was Ado Annie in Spenboroughs’ Oklahoma. Most recently she enjoyed playing her first lead with Buttershaw as Polly Baker in our last production, Crazy for You.
Steve Redfern – Billy Bigelow Steve has been influenced in the arts from a young age having grown up in a family with an interest in musical theatre. He studied the piano and trombone from a young age and developed his musical talent playing at a high academic and practical level. He took his knowledge of music into musical theatre and started playing small cameo roles. By the age of 18 he was playing demanding lead roles such as, Tony in West Side Story, Curly in Oklahoma and Bobby in Crazy For You. One of his most enjoyable roles was Fred Graham in Kiss Me Kate'. As well as playing romantic leads, he also enjoys playing comedy parts. Steve is particularly looking forward to playing Billy Bigelow in our production of Carousel as the 'Soliloquy' is one of his favourite songs.
About the Cast
Anne Tonks – Nettie Fowler Anne took her first role on the Alhambra stage at the age of 9 when her dancing mistress, Queenie Roma, let her take part in the chorus of Bradford Amateurs production of Belle of New York. She then joined their dancing team and played with them until she was 17 when she met her husband, Simon, in Oklahoma. Anne joined Buttershaw St Paul’s at 15 to play Charlie Girl in our world amateur premier and has played numerous roles with us ever since. Favourites parts include her ‘namesakes’ - Annie in Annie Get your Gun, Anna in King and I, Anna in the Merry Widow and she also includes Adelaide in Guys and Dolls. She enjoys every show and the thrill of performing in front of an audience. She has also played with most other societies in and around Bradford but Buttershaw will always be closest to her heart.
Jennie Burrows - Carrie Jennie is delighted to be back with Buttershaw having previously taken Peggy Sawyer in 42nd Street and Lady Jacqueline in Me and My Girl. From the age of three Jennie studied dance at Dorothy Stevens yet her first musical role was as one of the Snow children in Carousel when she was six years old. Recently Jennie has been studying Linguistics at Durham University even though she has spent much more time rehearsing than in the library. Roles include: the title role in Sweet Charity, Anita - West Side Story, Bianca - Kiss Me Kate, Val - A Chorus Line, Miss Bell - Fame, Penny - A Slice of Saturday Night and Lady Brighton - Me and My Girl.
Edward Latch - Mr Snow Edward has been involved in musicals for many years both in Leeds and in his home town of Leighton Buzzard. In 2000 Edward went to Leeds University to study mathematics where he joined the Music Theatre Company performing in Cabaret and Into the Woods. In 2003 he produced and performed in Corpus, an original musical, at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Other parts include: Sweeney Todd in Sweeney Todd, Cookie in Forbidden Planet, Seymour in Little Shop of Horrors and The Artful Dodger in Oliver Twist. Edward is a keen musician and sings with Halifax Chamber Choir.
Louise and Richard Whyte – Mrs Mullins and Jigger Craigin Theatre has had quite an impact on Rick and Lou's lives. They met during Bradford Youth Players' production of Dracula Spectacular (Rick was Dracula, Lou his mother!) They were engaged on Broadway, New York and married between rehearsals for Moby Dick and our production of Crazy For You! As well as BYP, they've taken leads in shows with many other societies in the region but consider BSP their home now and have had the pleasure of playing leads in the last four shows. It's ironic that, in their six years together, they've not actually played opposite one another romantically. That sequence is not going to be broken in Carousel...!
Billy Bigelow STEVE REDFERN
Our story opens in a New England amusement park one spring afternoon. The people of the town are out to enjoy themselves, barkers call them to their own particular attractions and flirt with the local girls. Among them are Julie Jordan and her friend, Carrie Pipperidge, two of the local mill girls. It all seems like harmless fun, but the seeds of later tragedy are sown here, and events are closely watched by strange, shadowy figures.
The story of Carousel
As a result of his flirtation with Julie, Billy Bigelow the barker on the carousel loses his job. The couple marry and set up home with Julie’s cousin Nettie. Billy does not adapt well to married life, he is restless and ready to leave Julie and return to the carousel when she tells him that she is expecting a baby. In a desperate attempt to prove himself a good father and provide for his unborn child Billy agrees to accompany the local ‘ne’er do well’ Jigger Craigin, on an ill advised robbery. Their badly planned crime goes wrong and Billy loses his life. He finds himself in another world where those in charge have a record of his life and are not too impressed with his efforts. He is given one last chance to redeem himself and returns to earth to help his fifteen year old daughter who has problems of her own. Adapted from the play ‘Liliom’ by the Hungarian dramatist Ferenc Molnar and first produced on Broadway in April 1945, Carousel is one of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s most popular shows. It ran for 850 performances at the Majestic Theatre on Broadway and more than 550 at Drury Lane before 20th Century Fox made it into a highly successful film starring Gordon MacRae and Shirley Jones in1956. Its tuneful melodies are well known to theatre goers and football fans alike, although one of them at least was originally intended for that other hit show ‘Oklahoma’, under the title, ’This was a real nice hayride’! Whichever version you prefer we hope you enjoy our show this evening. D.E.B.
