With Best Wishes for a successful production of

W

elcome to St George’s Hall and our production of Gershwins’ “Crazy For You”. This show takes us back to America in the 1930’s with all the glitz and glamour of that era. It was originally produced at that time under the title of “Girl Crazy”. This current version was rewritten in the 1980’s with more original Gershwin melodies added. I hope that you enjoy our interpretation of the show which has been once again produced by Steve, Janet and Ian. We thank them for all their hard work. In 2004, donations totalling £4000 were given to the following local charities and organisations:St Paul's Church, Candlelighters, Macmillan Nurses, Lord Mayor's Appeal, Yorkshire Air Ambulance, St John Ambulance, Horton Moravian Church, Alan Jeffries Appeal, St Paul's Cricket Club and The Talking Telegraph. Although we usually principally support local charities, we have agreed that part of our proceeds from this production together with the bucket collections at this theatre will be sent as soon as possible to the Tsunami Relief Programme. The Lord Mayor of Bradford, Councillor Mrs Irene Ellison-Wood will attend our performance on Thursday evening along with the Vicar of St Paul’s Church, together with representatives of NODA and our neighbouring Societies. Our Youth Pantomime this year is “Humpty Dumpty” at Cleckheaton Town Hall on the 21st, 22nd and 23rd of March. We hope to see you all there supporting our junior members. Thank you for your continued support, I hope you enjoy being with us tonight, and have a safe journey home. With my best wishes

Chairman.

Obituaries

David Plunkett died in tragic circumstances in April at the age of 21. David played the Dame in our 1998 Youth Pantomime ‘Pinocchio’. He will be remembered as a very pleasant and caring young man. His death came as a terrible shock to all who worked or took part in that production, as it did with the whole community. Pauline Tinkler who passed away in December was a loyal member of the Society for nearly 10 years during the 1980’s. She had a fine contralto voice and played several supporting roles as well as appearing in the chorus.

Patron - Lord Lloyd Webber The National Operatic and Dramatic Association was formed in 1899 ‘to protect and advance the interests of operatic and dramatic art, and of societies engaged therein’. NODA has a membership of some 2300 Amateur Companies and over 2500 individual members throughout the UK, staging musicals, operas, plays, concerts and pantomimes in a wide variety of performing venues ranging from the country’s leading theatres to local village halls. Whatever the age of the participants, or the on or off stage talent they have to offer, they are involved in amateur theatre for the love of it. Those appearing will have given many hours to rehearse their contribution, the stage crew are vital to bringing the show alive on stage whilst committee members and front of house staff all contribute to the challenge of staging a production. Each production created becomes a truly community project. With Area and National Conferences, workshops, seminars, the publication of a quarterly news magazine and regional publications, NODA provides the national network for all areas of amateur theatre in the UK. We welcome our new Regional Representative Mrs Judith Smith together with the North East Area Councillor Mr Chris Ingram. We are grateful for their visit and hope that they and their guests enjoy the performance.

Obituaries, NODA & Awards

Joan Lofthouse who died last February was the NODA Regional Representative for our area for many years. She worked tirelessly on behalf of the amateur theatre, attending all of our productions in many venues, and was always interested in the Society. Her ‘home’ society was Idle and Thackley AODS and many of our members will have known her as a personal friend appearing with that Society. Her presence and friendly advice will be missed by us all.

Long Service Awards This year several members of our Society will receive Long Service Awards recognising their valuable contribution to the Society and the amateur stage, they are:3rd Bar - 40 years - Shirley Hodgson 2nd Bar - 35 years - Anne Tonks and Margaret Shaw 25 Year Medal - David Shinn

The Story of Crazy For You

In 1930, George and Ira Gershwin’s ‘Girl Crazy ‘ opened on Broadway. It featured a nineteen year old Ginger Rogers singing ‘Embraceable You‘ and ‘But Not For Me‘ and an unknown twenty one year old typist, Ethel Zimmerman, who stopped the show nightly with her rendition of ‘I Got Rhythm’. She went on to become Ethel Merman and, after a rather longer delay,’ Girl Crazy’ went on to become ‘Crazy For You’. Its 1991 tryout in Washington was not a financial success, but in 1992 it moved to Broadway’s Shubert Theater and proved to be a hit in the great American Musical tradition. The best numbers from ‘Girl Crazy were retained and another thirteen were added from other Gershwin shows. The new book by Ken Ludwig also made changes to the story. In the rewritten version New Yorker Bobby Childs is sent by his mother to foreclose on the Gaiety Theater in Deadrock Nevada. He falls in love with the theatre owner’s daughter, Polly, and decides to save the theatre to impress her. There is no shortage of theatrical clichés: rich boy and poor but proud girl, mistaken identities, eccentric English ladies, and, probably the best known of them all, ‘Let’s put on a show right here!’ Wonderful melodies, a line up of glamourous chorus girls, sparkling costumes, they all add up to a thoroughly enjoyable evening of escapism to chase away the January gloom. So sit back, relax and enjoy. D.E.B.
