A Message From Our President
Welcome once again to the Bingley Arts Centre, and our production of “Fiddler On The Roof. The period depicted in this show is one of harsh rule in Tsarist Russia, but it does have its lighter and humourous moments as well as some gorgeous music. When the show was chosen one of our very own members, Rob Middleton expressed his wish to play the leading role of Tevye, and we were pleased indeed that his wish could be granted. Rob has produced our last three pantomimes, and puts his heart and soul into whatever he does. We wish him every success in this exacting role. He is supported by a dedicated cast, including members of our junior section, so ably directed by Michael Kirkby and Catherine Sweet with David Gowing our pianist. I have every confidence that you will enjoy the show and we are delighted that you are here with us. Thank you for your support. I can assure you that this week you are the most important people in our lives. With all my very best wishes.

The Story of ‘Fiddler
on the
Roof’
Fiddler on the Roof is set in the small Jewish village of Anatevka, Russia, and is primarily concerned with the efforts of Tevye, a dairyman, his wife, Golde, and their five daughters to cope with their harsh existence under Tsarist rule. During the Prologue (Tradition), Tevye explains the role of God’s law in providing a balance in the villagers lives. He insists that with out their traditions they would find their lives as shaky as “The Fiddler on the Roof” The Matchmaker tells Golde she has a match for their eldest daughter Tzeitel. Lazar Wolf the wealthy but elderly village butcher. She begs her father to let her marry Motel the poor tailor instead. Tevye is torn between the happiness of his daughter and his beloved traditions, he agrees to their marriage and manufactures a wild nightmare to convince his wife that it will be all right. He tells her had a dream in which the late wife of Lazar Wolf appeared to him, and warned him that Tzeitel would die if she married the butcher. Hodel the second daughter falls for student Perchik who has arrived in the village. He leaves to work in Siberia, and promises Hodel he will send for her, Tevye approves in spite of his misgivings. Perchik is later arrested and Hodel leaves the village to go to him, so they can be married on his release. Tevye then learns that a priest has married Chava to Fyedka a Russian so he disowns her and claims she is dead to him. The Constable brings the news that everyone in the town has to leave Anatevka in three days. Fiddler on the Roof opened in America on September 22nd 1964, with Zero Mostel in the leading roll. It ran for 3,242 performances, and opened the door for other musicals to deal with more serious issues. The film version starring Topol was first shown in 1971.

The Production Team
MICHAEL KIRBY (Director)
CATHERINE SWEET (Musical Director)
DAVID GOWING (Rehearsal pianist)
Michael began his career in theatre at the age of 13, and has appeared in over 100 musicals, having directed and choreographed 28.
This is the sixth show that Cathy and Michael Kirby have worked together on and once again it has been a most enjoyable experience. We have a strong cast who have worked very hard. We hope we have done this popular show justice.
David is a freelance ICT trainer. He is a popular and valued member of Idle & Thackley. Fiddler on the Roof will be the twelth show he has served as accompanist.
His favourite role is Kipps in “Half A Sixpence”. a part he has played 7 times. His television credits include “Junior Show Time”, “Flaxton Boys”, “Justice”, “Quennie’s Castle”, “Follyfoot Far” and “Emmerdale”. He also played the part of Angelo in Fat Sams Gang in the film “Bugsy Malone”. Michael’s next production will be ‘Oliver’ with Harrogate O.P.’s.
So far this year Cathy has been busy with a youth version of ‘Les Miserables’ for Little S.O.a.Ds at Skipton, ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ for Grove & Rawdon Theatre Company at Yeadon in May which slotted in just nicely before Idle’s “Fiddler on the Roof”.
He has also accompanied Leeds Amateurs and Pudsey Trinity AODS. David has been the Musical Director for the Society’s “MiniShow” reviews performed at their Little Theatre in Idle and was awarded a national NODA bursary to attend the Musical Directors’ course at Loughborough in 2001.
We are pleased to welcome back Michael for his sixth production for Idle & Thackley.

SERVING AMATEUR THEATRE SINCE 1899
NATIONAL OPERATIC and DRAMATIC ASSOCIATION Headquarters : NODA House, 58-60 Lincoln Road, Peterborough PE1 2RZ Telephone: 0870 770 2480 e-mail: everyone@noda.org.uk
Fax: 0870 770 2490 website: www.noda.org.uk
The National Operatic and Dramatic Association (NODA) was founded in 1899 and has a membership of over 2,300 amateur societies and 3000 individual enthusiasts throughout the UK, staging musicals, operas, plays, concerts and pantomimes in a wide variety of performing venues, ranging from the country’s leading professional theatres to tiny village halls. NODA is divided into eleven Areas, each headed by an Area Councillor who sits on the National Council (the ruling body of the Association), supported by a network of Regional Representatives. These 180 volunteers are the vital link to the grass roots of the Association, the amateur theatre companies. The Association is administered from its Headquarters, with a knowledgeable and friendly staff able to deal with virtually any enquiry relating to amateur theatre. There is a broad spectrum of ages involved in amateur theatre nationwide, from a burgeoning number of youth groups to adult companies which meet the needs of all levels of both performers, whether dramatic or musical, and enthusiasts involved backstage, front of house or in administration. Each production created is a genuine community event. NODA aims: To give a shared voice to the amateur theatre sector Y To help amateur societies and individuals achieve the highest standards of best practice and performance Y To provide leadership and advice to enable amateur theatre to tackle the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century Y
Benefits of membership include access to NODA’s advice service at National and Area level, representation to government, funding agencies, rightsholders and the media, and access to conferences, workshops and seminars to help share information on best practice. NODA also holds an annual residential Summer School (with bursaries available) offering training from professional tutors in drama performance, music directing, musical theatre, stage management and other courses for performers, directors and technicians. It publishes regular Area magazines and its quarterly NODA National News, and holds annual National and Area Programme and Poster Competitions, to encourage the highest standards in design. The NODA Library and Meeting Room provides access to a comprehensive research archive of scores, libretti and reference books, as well as an attractive room for meetings. NODA’s trading arm, NODA Limited, acts as a mechanism for raising additional funds for the Association. Its publishing department, NODA Pantomimes, offers over 85 entertaining scripts by such popular authors as Leonard Caddy, Peter Denyer, Stephen Duckham, Ron Hall, Robert Marlowe, John Morley and David Swan, and other publications including an exciting new musical The Slipper and the Rose, and practical guides for performers and directors. Its Sheet Music Service can supply popular and obscure songs, some out of print. It also offers Long Service Awards, and discounts on playscripts, libretti and scores, theatre books from the catalogue of A & C Black, makeup from Charles H. Fox, and telephone bills through Class Systems by up to 50% below the BT standard rate (with 5% of all call charges donated to NODA). NODA Insurance, in conjunction with AXA, offers the best insurance package for amateur societies (30% discount to NODA members). Telephone 0870 241 1086 for further details.

Obituaries JACK WOODHEAD President. 1991 – 1999 Over eighty years ago Jack Woodhead was born into a well-known Idle family, which had connections with our Society for a considerable number of years. Indeed Jack’s Mother was President of the Ladies Section for over twenty years, and Jack’s wife Mollie has also been a long serving member, having been in the past Secretary to the Society for over twenty five years and remains to this day a Life Member. Jack was in the cast of “The Student Prince” which the Society produced in 1954, and whilst heavy business commitments prevented him from playing a more active role his interest in the Society never waned, and in 1991 he was delighted to accept the office of President. He wore the collarette with great pride, and often expressed in the words of Cap’n Andy in “Showboat” he presided over o“ ne big happy family”. Jack was a man of great integrity and sound judgement who always held the Society very close to his heart. Whilst, because of business and health reasons, we have not been able more recently to see much of Jack his interest was always very much alive and he will be lovingly remembered by all the members of the Society. We miss his ever cheerful countenance and cheery greeting, and we all join in expressing our heartfelt condolences to Mollie and her family. John Roberts
EDDIE WILLIAMSON It was with great sadness that the Society learned of the sudden death of this much liked and respected member and friend. Eddie started singing with Shipley Gilbert & Sullivan Society in the 1950’s and joined Idle & Thackley in 1978 where he met his wife Marian. He took part in many productions often playing cameo roles, he also spent some happy years as a chorus member of Bingley AOS .He was a founder member of our annual pantomimes in which he took part for many years, and also enjoyed taking part in our annual mini shows. When he retired from the stage he remained involved in all productions helping out wherever he could. He was always happy to help. As a professional painter and decorator before he retired, he was very involved when we secured the lease on our rehearsal rooms in Idle in their renovation and in the creation of our “Little Theatre”. Eddie was holder of the NODA Gold Bar award signifying 50 years of service He is sadly missed and remembered with affection. Our deepest sympathy to his wife Marian, his son Les and family. Sheila Farnell
JOHANNES (HANS) POOT Hans who was born and brought up in Holland joined the Society with his wife Joyce in 2000, as well has being a chorus member, he often made props, did repairs in the rehearsal rooms, and could be relied on to know where to get that special item that was vital to a production. When not singing with Idle & Thackley or with the choir at Saltaire United Reform Church he was a keen and knowledgeable gardener. He will be sadly missed both as a member and a friend. Our sympathy to Joyce and his family. Graham Farnell
