A Message From Our President It is always a pleasure to welcome you to yet another of our Society’s productions and this evening is no exception. It surprises me to realise that we last performed ‘Oklahoma!’ in 1958 (such is the passage of time) but I am sure the show has lost none of its appeal. We do not believe in changing a winning team and are delighted to have leading us once again Michael Kirby, Catherine Sweet, Betty Woodrow and David Gowing, with Michael this year playing the part of Will Parker. We have a dedicated committee and an enthusiastic company of members and helpers who are playing their respective parts not only during this production but throughout the whole year. My thanks to everyone involved-they are a great team which I am proud to lead-but my especial thanks to you, our audience, for your support and encouragement. Do enjoy the show and when you leave the theatre I trust you will find your way safely home whilst still humming or even singing - why not - some of the well-known melodies from Oklahoma! - believe me, I do. With all best wishes, John Roberts

The Story of ‘Oklahoma!’ Oklahoma!, Rodgers’ and Hammerstein’s first musical collaboration, opened in 1943. The story of Oklahoma! is about a young woman, Laurey, living in the Indian Territory soon after the beginning of the 20th Century. It begins with Aunt Eller, churning butter outside her farmhouse, as Curly arrives singing of the beautiful morning. When he invites Laurey, Aunt Eller’s niece, to the box social, she feigns indifference to Curly. He attempts to impress Laurey with a description of the surrey in which he will take her to the party, but only angers her by claiming that it’s only a figment of his imagination. Will Parker now appears and describes his recent experiences in Kansas City where he won fifty dollars in a steer-roping contest. That fifty dollars is vital to him, as he wants to marry Ado Annie and her father, Judge Andrew Carnes, will only give consent if Will can accumulate such a sum. In spite of her assumed diffidence towards Curly, Laurey is really in love with him. To arouse his jealousy, she decides to go to the box social with Jud Fry, the hired hand, of whom she is actually - and rightly - afraid. Ado Annie has been flirting with a Persian Peddler named Ali Hakim and confesses to Laurey that she likes both Ali and Will and just can't say no to men! When she tells her father that Will has spent his fifty dollars and describes the overtures she has received from Ali Hakim, he insists with the aid of his shotgun that Ali marry his daughter. Curly has been at the receiving end of approaches from Gertie Cummings, with whom Laurey has a battle of words. She and Curly acknowledge their feelings for each other, although she does not feel able to break her promise to go to the party with Jud. Curly pays Jud a visit, teases and goads him, learns that he is not to be trusted and leaves Jud in a torment of self-pity. The box social starts with a cheerful dance, spiced with rivalry between the farmers and the cowboys. The auction follows, with men bidding for the hampers of their favourite women. Will Parker, trying to win the hand of Annie, has raised fifty dollars by selling the presents he bought for her to Ali Hakim, who sees this as a way out of marriage to Ado Annie. Will bids the cash for Annie’s hamper. Curly and Jud have a bitter contest to buy Laurey’s basket. Jud is willing to commit his life savings and Curly can only succeed by selling everything he owns. Jud’s immediate attempt to kill Curly is thwarted and he disappears. Three weeks later Curly marries Laurey, and everyone looks forward to the time when Oklahoma will be a state. Jud appears, intent on revenge, but in a fight with Curly falls on his own knife. Judge Carnes arranges a quickly improvised court and Curly is then freed to commence his honeymoon with Laurey. ‘Oklahoma’ hit Broadway in 1943 with a force like no other musical before it. It played for 2,248 performances, breaking every record for shows up until that time. Since then ‘Oklahoma’ has been produced more than 30,000 times. Over the years, it has won the Pulitzer Prize, two Academy Awards and in 1993 became the first Broadway musical to be commemorated on a Unites States postage stamp.

We are pleased to welcome back Michael for his fifth production for Idle & Thackley.
CATHERINE SWEET (Musical Director)
DAVID GOWING (Rehearsal pianist)
This is the fifth show that Cathy and Michael Kirby have worked together on and once again it has been a most enjoyable experience. We have a strong cast who have worked very hard. We hope we have done this popular Rogers and Hammerstein’s show justice.
David is a freelance ICT trainer. He is a popular and valued member of Idle & Thackley.
So far this year Cathy has done ‘The Wiz’ and ‘My Fair Lady’. After ‘Oklahoma!’she will be doing ‘Oliver’ at Skipton and then something a little different, ‘Return to the Forbidden Planet’ for the Grove & Rawdon Theatre Company at Yeadon in November.
Oklahoma will be the eleventh show he has served as accompanist. He has also accompanied Leeds Amateurs and Pudsey Trinity AODS. David has been the Musical Director for the Society’s “Mini-Show” reviews performed at their Little Theatre in Idle and was awarded a national NODA bursary to attend the Musical Directors’ course at Loughborough in 2001.
Next year proves to be equally as busy with a youth version of ‘Les Miserables’ for Little S.O.a.Ds at Skipton, ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ for Grove & Rawdon Theatre Company at Yeadon in May which will slot in just nicely before Idle’s next show here in June

Obituaries It is with the utmost regret that we have to record the sudden death in February of this year of one of our Vice-Presidents and longest serving members, Miss Joan Lofthouse. Joan served the Society in a variety of roles but particularly for many years as its Secretary, an office she held with distinction. She was always concerned about the good name and standing of the Society and its members. More recently she served the North East Area of N.O.D.A. for 18 years as its representative for Region No. 7 (Bradford), in which capacity she was a tireless worker and gained the admiration and goodwill of all with whom she was concerned. Joan is sadly missed in so many ways. We pray that she may rest in peace and we give thanks for a life dedicated to the wellbeing of so many others and especially all her friends and colleagues within the Amateur Operatic and Dramatic movement.
