Dear Friends,
We first applied to perform the show almost 20 years ago but due to complications with the rightholders this is the first opportunity that it has been available to our society. I hope you agree that it has been well worth the wait. The society has had a very busy year since our production of ‘Me & My Girl’ last January with the youth pantomime of ‘Pied Piper’ in March, our Summer production of ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ to celebrate the Society’s 70th Anniversary and the Alhambra Concert in September to commemorate the Queen’s Golden Jubilee. As a result of these productions we are delighted to be able to donate £3000 this week to local charities. This year, due to the retirement of Brian Cryer and Colin Marchant after many years loyal service, we have a new production team. We welcome Ian Sapiro as Musical Director & Steve Tetlow as Production Director. We are delighted to have them aboard to join Janet Fletcher, our Choreographer for the past 9 years. They have joined us full of enthusiasm and already feel part of the “family”. My best wishes,
Chairman.

Our Society has once again been awarded the prestigious Dick Perkins Trophy for the second time in five years. The trophy is awarded annually by the National Operatic and Dramatic Association for the best Souvenir Programme produced for an amateur stage production throughout the UK. The trophy was presented at NODA's Annual Conference held in Torquay in September. Earlier this year they were also awarded the Silver Plate, open to all societies based in the North Eastern region of the Association. The winning programme was for our production of Me & My Girl which was performed at St. George's Hall in January last year. Both of these awards will be on display in the foyer and if you supported our production of this programme, may we take this opportunity to thank you for your support and valuable contribution. Photo shows Alan Hirst (BSPAODS) with both trophies.

MACK + MABEL
Historical Background + Story
Many of the audience walking into the theatre this evening, will be fairly certain that they don’t know anything about ‘Mack and Mabel’, and quite definite about the fact that they couldn’t name any songs from the show. As the evening progresses they may be surprised to find that they recognise most of the music (courtesy of Torvill and Dean and David Jacobs) and even know something about the characters (‘Well, I didn’t realise he had anything to do with the Keystone Kops!’) Our story begins in the 1930s, with Sennett looking back to the era of silent movies when ‘he ran the show’. Struggling to keep his studio afloat, he discovered Mabel Normand, a sandwich delivery girl, moved to Hollywood and became a great success. Mabel fell in love with him, but for Mack movies always came first and so, disillusioned, Mabel quarrelled with him, fell under the undesirable influence of William Desmond Taylor and left Sennett and his studio. Mack had further movie success but the pair were never truly happy apart and, after many problems, they were finally reunited, for as Mack always said, ‘I promise you a happy ending. . .’ The American production of the show starring Robert Preston and Bernadette Peters opened at the Majestic Theatre, New York on October 6th 1974. Jerry Herman produced a brilliant score and Torvill and Dean recognised its quality when they used the overture in their 1984 bid for Olympic gold. Whether or not you discover that you remember the music, we trust that you will thoroughly enjoy your trip back to the days when, to quote Mack Sennett himself, ‘Movies were movies’.
Mack Sennett (1880 - 1960) Born Michael Sinnott in Canada in 1880 he became king of silent screen comedy in the 1920s, Chaplin and Lloyd being just two of the great comedians who began their careers in his Keystone Studios. He pioneered slapstick and invented both ‘The Keystone Kops’ and ‘The Bathing Belles’. His movies had little in the way of plot but he understood comedy and comedians, his humour was simple and direct and he revealed a great deal about the follies and foibles of human nature. In 1937 he was given a special Academy Award for, ‘his lasting contribution to the comedy techniques of the screen, ‘but the new talkies were not to his taste and he faded into retirement.
Mabel Normand (1894 - 1930) Born Mabel Fortescue she joined Sennett in 1913. She was tiny with huge eyes, which gave her an air of innocence and frailty, but she had enormous energy and high spirits. She became one of Hollywood’s best loved comediennes and was set to marry Sennett in 1915, but they quarrelled and separated. They did work together again on ‘Micky’ and ‘Molly O’ and she was also under contract to Sam Goldwyn for a time. However, involvement in two murder scandals wrecked her career. She had a brief unhappy marriage to Lew Cody, but her health failed and she died in February 1930. DEB

Since our last production we have lost three long serving members who each gave valuable service to the Society.
Obituaries
Roy Rigg who died in April was the only member of our Society ever to be awarded the Noda Diamond Bar for 60 years service to amateur theatre. He worked tirelessly in his capacity for us as Secretary, a position he held for 25 years, Committee member and 'make-up' master. He joined the Society in 1935 at the age of 15 to appear in Yeoman of the Guard and he played many notable character parts – his last appearance was in Fiddler on the Roof in 1997. He will be affectionately remembered as Jud Fry (Oklahoma 1960), Ali Ben Ali (Desert Song 1956), Doolittle (My Fair Lady 1972), and his favourite role Mr. Murdoch (Brigadoon 1959 and 1982). A fine bass voice, Roy also performed regularly with Bradford Gilbert & Sullivan Society and Great Horton AOS, and in recent years was well respected for 'make-up' for many other Societies in the area, his last show being Me and My Girl for us in January last year. He was a Life Member of St. Paul's and will be a hard act to follow. Jack Butterworth who died in November joined the Society for the 1956 production of Desert Song after taking leading roles with Buttershaw Congs. During ensuing years he served on the Committee as Social Secretary, organising many enjoyable Dinner Dances and was responsible for selecting the musical items for our junior pantomimes and summer concerts. He played many leading roles including Danilo (Merry Widow 1965), Daddy Long Legs (Love From Judy 1962), Vandergelder (Hello Dolly 1974), and Colonel Pickering (My Fair Lady 1972). His last show with us was also Desert Song in 1978. Jack had also been a member of Bradford Gilbert & Sullivan Society and Great Horton AOS. He remained a Patron and dedicated supporter of the Society to the end. He was a loyal member of the Church and PCC and his tireless work will be greatly missed. Roger Wilkinson joined the Society in 1970 and appeared on stage in Maid of the Mountains, but soon found that his talent was behind the scenes. He was appointed Hon. Stage Manager the following year, a position he held for both the main show and the pantomime until 1987 when he became a Vice President of the Society. He was a very capable and dedicated craftsman who engineered our transition from our first home at St. Paul's schoolrooms to the Library Theatre. Our Society has been fortunate in having the support of willing and capable servants over the years – Roger was no exception.
We are richer for having known them – the Society is poorer for their passing.
