There is a broad span of ages involved nationwide in every sort of activity connected with the performing arts both onstage and off. Whatever the age of the participants, whatever the onstage or offstage talents they have to offer, they are involved in amateur theatre for the love of it. Performers, the stage crew, committee members and front of house staff all contribute to the creation and success of each production. Noda aims to give a shared voice to the amateur sector, help societies and individuals achieve the highest standard of best practice and provide leadership for the 21st century. Noda is divided into 11 areas, the North East area covering Yorkshire. This is one of the largest areas with over 230 society members and over 400 individual or joint members. The Regional Representative, Mrs Joan Lofthouse, is retiring in March and 'My Fair Lady' is the last show she will see in her official capacity. May we take this opportunity to wish her a long and happy retirement.

Our Director My Fair Lady was - four and a half years down the line - Lerner and Loewe's successor to Paint Your Wagon, but, unlike it and their Brigadoon, it was a musical edition of an existing play. George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion was the story of Cockney flower girl Eliza Doolittle who manages to pass for a princess at a society ball after having had her rude vowels ironed out by a tetchy linguist and swapping her grubby native outfit for a new dress bought for her by the linguist's chum! Lerner took just a few liberties with Shaw's story. When the playwright published his work, he specifically added an epilogue in which he described what happened to the made-over Eliza when the transformation from ahhhwing Cockney to perfectly vowelled lady was effected and the experiment for which Professor Higgins had used her for raw material was done. According to Shaw, she married Freddy Eynsford-Hill, a useless if adoring member of the upper-middle classes, and tried to run a flower shop. Lerner stopped short having Eliza and Higgins walk down to the footlights in wedding outfits but when My Fair Lady ended, you were clearly supposed to see the beginnings of real romance. However, had Lerner not introduced this note of tenderness in his adaptation of the work of a playwright who didn't know what tenderness was, one of the most successful songs of the show would never have seen the light of the stage. For Higgins' half-bewildered reaction to the (temporary) walk-out staged by Eliza was expressed in song: the beautiful I've Grown Accustomed to her Face. Higgins' other songs were each in a more rattling vein: his intolerant railing at accented speech (Why Can't the English?), his misogynist Hymn to Him and his self-deluding Ordinary Man. Eliza, on the other hand, ran the gamut, from her early dreamily Cockney Wouldn't it be Loverly to the hurtfully refined Without You and the romantic I Could Have Danced All Night. There were also two knees-uppish pieces for Eliza's dustman father and a starryeyed serenade for the hopeless Freddy in a musical score where every number was to become a well- known favourite.
David Kirk
My Fair Lady became the biggest musical hit that Broadway had ever seen, holding the longest run record for nearly ten years. More than that, it went round the world in a manner that no American musical had ever done before. The show went into Central Europe and also Scandinavia, to Italy, to Israel and to South America, from the top of the world to the bottom, from the stage to screen, round and back again! My Fair Lady quite simply covered the world in a manner that no musical had done since goodness knows when! And, wherever it went, it won approval and popularity. Other musicals may well have opened the door to the rest of the world for the new wave of Broadway musicals, but it was My Fair Lady that marched triumphantly through that door!

Note from our President Hello and welcome once again to this wonderful Alhambra Theatre for our 2003 show My Fair Lady. We have a super production for you this year with a good cast which includes a lively and energetic chorus. On behalf of Great Horton Theatre Company (do you like our new name?) I wish to thank you for your support each year in keeping amateur theatre alive in Bradford. As you will no doubt have seen in the local press recently we and other societies are facing ever increasing production costs and smaller audiences. I hope that you enjoy the show tonight. Please tell your friends about us and help us to maintain Bradford's Cultural Heritage for many years to come. Best wishes,
Clare Ashley

My Fair Lady - The Story Cockney girl, Eliza Doolittle, is selling flowers in Covent Garden when she is overheard by an expert in linguistics, Henry Higgins. She hears him telling Colonel Pickering, a student of Indian dialects, that he could pass her off as a lady in six months. The following day she goes to see Higgins and offers to pay for lessons because she can work in a flower shop if she can speak properly. Pickering challenges Higgins to make good his boast and they bet on it. When Eliza's father, Alfred P. Doolittle, a dustman, hears of this he goes to see Higgins to get some money out of him. Higgins sends Doolittle’s name to American Ezra D. Wallingford of the Moral Reform League describing him as 'one of the most original moralists in England'. Higgins and Pickering take Eliza to Ascot to 'try her out' where she speaks properly but her conversation betrays her background. Here she meets Freddy Eynsford-Hill who falls madly in love with her. At the end of six months Eliza triumphs at the Embassy Ball but is very upset when Higgins takes all the praise and she runs away to his mother's. In the meantime Ezra D. Wallingford has died and left Alfred Doolittle £4000 per year. Higgins realises that he has grown 'accustomed' to Eliza and misses her. The show ends as Eliza returns.
Our Charity - 2003 Bradford South District Scouts As District Commissioner for Scouting in Bradford South I would like to say 'Thank - You' for nominating us as your chosen charity for this year. Despite much change in the outlook of young people over the years since Scouting began almost 100 years ago, we remain the largest co - educational youth organisation in the World. Whilst numbers continue to rise in countries around the world here in the United Kingdom our numbers are falling. Over 75% of the people reading this will be or will have had some direct involvement in scouting. Scouting is continually trying to move forward to meet present day youth requirements without losing it's sense of purpose firmly anchored in it's aim, method and traditions. Bradford South Scouts has ten groups catering for boys and girls aged between 6 and 25 years of age. Groups are located in Wyke, Low Moor, Wibsey, Queensbury, Great and Little Horton, Horton Bank Top, Clayton (2) and Horton Grange. We have a scout band which has played at the highest level and a team of leaders who are truly dedicated to their young people. Whilst demand for joining the five different sections remains high the recruitment and retention of adult leaders/helpers causes us problems. Leaders in scouting are not paid, having said that,
most groups do pay for their leaders training. Scouting should come with a health warning however. Once sampled it can become infectious, resulting in many happy years devoted to young people. If ever there was a time for giving young people a helping hand, now is the time. Scouting is undergoing a change with the new district EXPLORER unit's for 14 - 18 year olds and County NETWORK unit for 18 - 25 year olds. Alongside this sits a new programme of activities and badges for all sections and a brand new uniform. 2007 is Scouting's centenary year with an International Jamboree planned here in England. We are seeking new members and new leaders/helpers all the time. We need adults with many diverse skills such as computing skills, business acumen, useful contacts but above all time. For further information please contact me on Bfd 570913 or Email me at odsalscl@legend.co.uk What are you waiting for help shape our future by MAKING A DIFFERENCE TODAY. We look forward to a successful working partnership with Great Horton Theatre company for many years to come and once again 'Thank - You' for nominating us as your charity this year. If last years production of 'OLIVER' is anything to go by then My Fair Lady will be another production to savour. Ian Walmsley

In Memoriam It is with deepest regret that we have to record that since our last show the following deaths have occurred.
Roy Rigg Roy was a thespian to his finger tips. Always supportive of amateur theatre he worked tirelessly to save the Library Theatre. As a playing member character roles were his forte and in his later years he became a master of the make up box . It is a tribute to the high esteem in which he was held that every Amateur Society in the city was represented at Roy's funeral. We will miss him and we are delighted that his daughter, Kathryn, has taken his place on our make up team this week.
C F Lancaster Affectionately known to us all as Fred, it was our privilege to have him as our Musical Director from 1962 - 1980 when he and his wife May moved to Market Rasen. Always supportive of the Society, Fred's enthusiasm and musical prowess were legendary. Fred was a perfectionist expecting 100% support from all the members of the company and from the most senior principals to the newest chorus member all were treated equally. It is a tribute to his musical ability we can still remember everything he taught us 30 years later. We remember after show parties in the ladies dressing room at the top of this theatre where we had a sing-a-long of songs from the shows. Moments never to be repeated will live in our memories for ever . There is only one epitaph that is appropriate for Fred - Thank you for the Music
