The President’s Page In 2002 we have great cause for celebration. Along with Queen Elizabeth II’s Golden Jubilee, we are celebrating 75 years as a Society. We are in good company. We are ever grateful to the founders of The Bradford Catholic Players, back in 1927, and to all who have contributed so much to our productions over the years. There is room to suit all tastes in our Society, whether you are on stage, helping with administration or making tea at rehearsals, but most of all we strive to be a community who socialise together and help one another. My year as President is only half way through, but already I have learned more about the back-room work which goes on unseen to ensure our productions go on smoothly and efficiently. I am very proud to have been given this opportunity to represent The Bradford Catholic Players and in turn may I thank you - our loyal audiences who support our shows. Please keep coming, we need you. Once again, thank you.

The story of
Act 1
OKLAHOMA The setting is the Indian Territory, now the state of Oklahoma, at the beginning of the last century. Aunt Eller is outside her farmhouse when Curly, a ranch hand, calls to invite Aunt Eller’s niece, Laurey, to the box social that evening. They are both smitten with each other, but too proud to admit it. Jud Fry, the hired hand and a very unsavoury character, lets it be known that he intends to ask Laurey to the dance. Meanwhile another cowboy, Will Parker, returns from Kansas City. He has won 50 dollars in prize money at the rodeo, enough to earn the hand of Ado Annie. Alas, in his absence Annie has fallen for the charms of Persian pedlar, Ali Hakim.

It's a Scandal! It's a Outrage!
Later that day, folks gather at Aunt Eller’s on the way to the social. Gertie Cummins persuades Curly to take her to the dance, a fact that Laurey is quickly made aware of. Ado Annie’s father, Judge Carnes decides, with shotgun in hand, that the pedlar is to be her partner for the evening. Ali Hakim is trapped.

Scene 2
In a dream, portrayed as an elaborate dance sequence, a perplexed Laurey sees herself married to Curly. Jud breaks up the marriage, kills Curly and forces her to go with him. She awakes with a start and finds Jud waiting to take her to the dance.
Lonely Room
The box social proves a happy affair. The rivalry between farmers and cowmen is quickly forgotten. The girls’ food boxes are auctioned off to raise money for the school house. A lively contest ensues for the boxes of Ado Annie and Laurey which are the last to be sold. As the bids climb higher and higher the good fun turns deadly serious and it takes the good sense of this frontier community to set its own terms of justice as the finale reveals.

In Memoriam In celebrating 75 years as a society we remember with great affection former members who laid the foundations for our success. Since our production of ‘Guys and Dolls’, in November last year, the society has lost five of its longest serving members and as such we pay tribute to their memory here:
Marie Bradley As an Honorary Life Vice President we recognised the crucial role Marie played in the formative years of the society. Always keen to ensure we presented ourselves in our best image, ‘Auntie’ Marie was one of the ‘old school’ who engendered and nurtured a belief that only the best is good enough. With a wonderful sense of fun nothing was ever too much for her to undertake if it maintained the standards she expected. Fondly remembered as one of our wardrobe mistresses; Marie would never shirk from saying it just as it was to ensure the over all effect met the demands of production. By supporting her own ‘family’ in pursuit of their enjoyment of society life Marie was unstinting and, consequently, she ensured another ‘generation’ could take to the stage.
Tony Monaghan Honorary Life Vice President, President, Chairman, Officer, Committee Member, Chorus Member, whatever the role if Tony had bought the T-shirt it would quite simply have said ‘Done It !’. Tony’s enthusiasm for and commitment to the society was as great as that for his own family, for which we are very grateful. In supporting, encouraging and understanding others he was a master. As a leader he was assertive and ensured objective outcomes were met in our success. As a mentor, to so many, his experience and knowledge ensured a continuation of the society’s ethos to the present day. Never one to interfere, his influence is still evident today in those members of his family who have followed in his footsteps.
Andrew Pickup A life long supporter of the society, even when he moved south, Andrew is remembered for his love and enthusiasm for The Bradford Catholic Players. Cast members over many years will remember Saturday matinee performances with Andrew sitting front and centre in the stalls conducting to his heart’s content and giving the male chorus a helping hand when he thought it appropriate. His direction and renditions of ‘Good Night Ladies’ at many a social occasion, with the ever lengthening pause, still feature prominently after a few beers. In the year when Bradford established its own embassy in London, we can proudly say that in Andrew the society had its own ambassador for many years in Derbyshire.
Fred Lancaster As our musical director Fred was unstinting in his demands. His personal discipline was beyond reproach and as such he expected 100%, both in rehearsal and performance, from principals to individual chorus members. Never one to hold back, his honesty in evaluating any element of a musical production would often be witnessed during rehearsals when his baton would come down repeatedly on his music stand to call a temporary halt to proceedings, before moving on. We are indebted to Fred for setting the standard which ensured the name of the society spread throughout the region. In recognition of his achievements he was nominated as an Honorary Life Vice President for services to the society.
Walter Scurrah Never one to seek the limelight Walter was one of our staunchest members. With over 50 years credited to his account as a member, he played his crucial part with a consistency that many of us could never emulate but to which we should aspire. Prior to ill health, in recent years, Walter was the cornerstone of the tenor section. Always prepared to lead from the front the sense of purpose he engendered played a critical part in encouraging those around him to participate with confidence. Though a firm belief holds true that no individual is irreplaceable it is certainly the case that it will be very difficult if not impossible to replace Walter.
