Welcome to our production of “Scrooge”. I hope you enjoy your time with us. As President of the Bradford Catholic Players I am proud to have witnessed the dedication and commitment of everyone involved in making this production the success we know it will be. You see only a selection of our members on stage and I thank them for their months of hard work, so too our Director Craig Cowdroy and the charismatic Sylvia Blackie our Musical Director. You will have been welcomed by our front of house team, but unseen there are many more of our ‘family’ and without their contribution this production will not have been possible. I thank them all. We are extremely grateful to our sponsors for their support. The cost of presenting a show in this marvellous theatre is becoming increasingly difficult for societies such as ourselves to successfully return Ian H. Hamilton year after year. There is a real danger of President financial pressures negating the enjoyment of staging these productions. Please support our advertisers who contribute regularly to our programme, their help is invaluable. We are grateful to the Management and Staff of the Alhambra for their advice and expert assistance with whom we enjoy an excellent working relationship. I cannot conclude without recording the thanks of the society to you our patrons for your regular support and encouragement. To those who may have joined us for the first time a special thank you. I hope you will return to enjoy our shows in the future. See you all next year for “Guys and Dolls”.

Finale Act 1
The tale opens on Christmas Eve 1860 in Cheapside, where the frosty air is alive with carols from churches. A nip in the air is nothing compared to the chill in the heart of Ebenezer Scrooge, a miserly money lender. He gives underpaid clerk Bob Cratchit a hard time when he asks for his holiday wage, refuses a dinner invitation from his nephew Harry, and turns down representatives of a charity for the poor. On his way home Scrooge collects debts from poor unfortunates who need extra money for the holiday. He curses this disdainfully as the silly season. Meanwhile Bob Cratchit goes shopping with his children, Kathy and Tiny Tim in tow, and celebrates the good will of the season. Back in his miserable, bare home Ebenezer is sipping soup when he is interrupted by the ghost of his dead partner Jacob Marley, hung with chains for his deeds forged in life. He warns him that this night he will be visited by three spirits to show him, while there is still time, the error of his ways. He is visited first by the ghost of Christmas Past. She takes him on a trip from his childhood to the period when as a young man he fell in love with the daughter of his employer Mr Fezziwig. He next meets the jovial ghost of Christmas Present who whisks him into the night to witness his nephew with his wife and friends, and then the Cratchit family in their modest home in Camden Town, all preparing for Christmas festivities. Finally he meets the ghost of Christmas Yet To Come and finds out what will happen to him unless he changes his ways. He wakes on Christmas morning realising there is time to make amends. The story concludes in a joyous frenzy of song and dance.

It is always a particularly difficult time following the death of a member of the ‘Players’, and yet after each we take great strength as a ‘family’ together. In this Millennium Year, we celebrate the lives of three who showed great courage in the face of illness and who brought a dignity in death which says more of each than any words written here. Three people, who’s lives were allied both in their professional careers and in their love for Bradford Catholic Players, dedicated to serving and helping others. WILLIAM HENRY Always the optimist Bill will long be remembered by this Society, and amateur theatre enthusiasts throughout the region, for his leading roles, for his wit and for his love and enthusiasm for life. Bill was, the archetypal ‘society member’, always present and willing to be cast as required and encouraging and supportive of all around him. In his memory we dedicated ourselves to uphold the ideals of ‘amateur’ entertainment, and to Mavis we offer our love and support, as he would most surely have wished. FRANK BREAR Over many years, individuals have, from time to time, ensured the continuous success of this society. Although our memories of Frank will include some notable performances on stage, he is best remembered for his loyal service and ‘guiding hand’ both as Chairman and as an Officer. His commitment, allied to that of committees he served on and chaired, ensured our progression through the 1970’s. Only the few, and Frank was one, are afforded the title ‘Honorary Life Vice President’ in recognition of service to the society and in appreciation of the high esteem in which they are held. To Joan, Jane and John we say thanks for supporting Frank in his work for the BCP and offer you our thoughts and prayers in his memory. SUE HOLROYD ‘Always thinking of others’ would be the most fitting epitaph for a lady who set herself, and those around her, such high standards. Sue was always prepared to ‘have her say’, in her usual quiet and dignified way, which served as a great support to all around her. An example to all in her family life, her career and her commitment and enthusiasm for the BCP, we can only ever aspire to follow in her footsteps. We are delighted to support the Marie Curie Appeal, with proceeds from Scrooge, since it was one which Sue held close to her heart. Although our efforts can never replace one loved so much we hope our gesture serves to comfort and console others, as Sue would have wished, and to Jim, Mark, Sarah and their families we hope it serves as a fitting remembrance.
