From the Chairman

elcome to Buttershaw St Paul’s Annual production here at St Georges Hall. We are proud to present Summer Holiday to you this year as a light, happy-go-lucky show full of well known songs from the Cliff Richard film, appropriate for his 50th Anniversary tour, which will have you dancing in the aisles! It has been lovely to see so many young people who have graduated from our Youth section join this production, full of energy and enthusiasm, well done to them. Thanks must go to our production team who are with us again this year, Ian, Janet and Stephen, along with our own Maureen Colbert, as Chorus Mistress, who has worked hard with us in ‘note-bashing’! Our Stage crew have had a difficult job getting a London Bus onto St George’s stage but they tackled it without a fuss and made it seem easy, thanks to them all. Thanks to St George’s Hall staff for all their help and for making us so welcome again this year. We would like to welcome our Regional NODA representative, Mrs Judith Smith, along with neighbouring Presidents from other Amateur Groups and the Deputy Lord Mayor Councillor Naveeda Ikram, on Wednesday to our President’s evening. Finally thanks to you for your support, without which we could not continue. We hope to see you in April at Cleckheaton Town Hall, for our Youth production of ‘The Wiz’ and next January here for ‘Anything Goes’. Have a very pleasant tour of Europe with us in our Bus and a safe journey home. With my best wishes,

Anne Tonks Chairman

Obituaries

EDNA RIGG Edna joined the Society in 1947 when it was reformed after the war and the year that she married Roy. Edna was in the chorus of the early shows when baby sitting duties allowed, but her main contribution to the Society was typing the minutes and correspondence for Roy during the 29 years that he was Hon. Secretary. Her interest in the Society remained strong to the end of her life, and she passed down the love of musical theatre to her daughter Kathryn and granddaughter Claire.

Rev. JOHN BEARDSMORE John was vicar of St Paul’s Church for 18 years from 1970 to 1988. A Past Vice President and good friend to the Society. We will remember both of them with affection and for their contribution to the Society.

Patron - Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber The National Operatic and Dramatic Association was founded in 1899 to ‘protect and advance the interests of operatic and dramatic art and of the societies engaged of therein’. Our Society is proud to be a member of NODA which has over 2300 societies and nearly 3000 individual members. The Association with its new headquarters in Peterborough, is able to advise societies on many aspects of amateur theatre and provides tailor-made insurance schemes and has its own extensive library. NODA encourages members to attend its Summer Schools, which consist of drama, stagecraft, opera, stage management, musical direction amongst many other topics. With Regional and National Conferences, workshops, seminars, awards and bursaries, together with the publication of quarterly news magazines, NODA provides the only national network for all areas of amateur theatre in the UK. We are part of the North Eastern region of the Association, our Area Councillor is Mr Chris Ingram and our Regional Representative is Mrs Judith Smith whom we look forward to welcoming to our production this week.

Long Service Awards Several of our members have over the years received long service medals. These are presented through NODA by the Society, to recognise their valuable contribution to the amateur stage and to their distinguished service to the Society. This year our NODA recipients are 45 Years Service Shirley Hodgson

40 Years Service Margaret Shaw

40 Years Service Anne Tonks

30 Years Service David Shinn

BSPAODS Youth The Beatrice McMahon Award, created by the Society in 2008 to be presented to the youth member, who in the eyes of the rest of the cast had shown commitment, enthusiasm and dedication throughout the rehearsals for the Junior Production. The 2009 winner was Anna Parker and the Society congratulates her.

Our next Youth production will be THE WIZ on Thursday 29th April to Saturday 1st May 2010 at Cleckheaton Town Hall. Enrolment night for all who wish to take part in THE WIZ is Friday 5th February at 7.30pm at St Paul’s Primary School. All children must be accompanied by parent or legal Guardian. Rehearsals will be held on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays.

Andy Redfern Don Andy is returning to the stage to undertake his second ever lead role. His last significant appearance was in 1996 when he played Oliver at The Victoria, Halifax at the age of 11. Now 25 years of age, Andy is looking forward to the challenge of playing Don in our production of ‘Summer Holiday’. He says “one of the most entertaining parts of performing in Summer Holiday over the past few weeks has been the cheesy lines, it’s been difficult to keep a straight face!” Other than amateur dramatics Andy is also interested in advanced snowboarding and attends a boxing club. Since completing his degree in ‘Interactive Multimedia Technology’ Andy has undertaken the responsibility of helping run a very successful business in Halifax. Andy jokes “Depending how well Summer Holiday goes, I may or may not return to the stage in the future ...”

Jonny Hirst – Cyril After performing as a youngster in the junior pantomime for many years, Jonny’s first senior production was Kiss Me Kate. Following University, Jonny has appeared in a number of productions for BSP, as well as taking roles in shows in Halifax and Huddersfield. Jonny is happy to be playing another role in Summer Holiday having previously played the part of Steve for Huddersfield in 2007

Mason Gurney - Steve Mason’s first show for Buttershaw St. Paul’s was the junior production of ‘Godspell’, when he played Judas. He has since played Mr Hasler in Pajama Game. He was brought up with theatre as his dad directs and teaches performing arts, but says he feels really nervous about performing in front of him as the ever critical director has high standards. Never the less he has continued with the society to be in the adult show; he performed in Pirates of Penzance and loved the experience. He loves music and is currently learning to play bass guitar, piano and is taking singing lessons, as well as studying performing arts at A level.

Richard Bartlett Edwin Richard has been a member of the society’s Junior Section since he was 10. His first show was Peter Pan in the Boy's Chorus. Aladdin and Humpty Dumpty followed, where the boys did renditions of Kung-Fu Fighting and dressed up as Thunderbirds (and messed up the routine one of the nights!). His first big role came in 'Bugsy Malone' where he played Fizzy. Since then, he has played Amos Scudder in 'Barnum' and Prez in 'The Pajama Game'. He says that he “finds it unusual how the change from Junior to Senior is played out. There's lots of complicated dancing to learn and I’m looking forward to be playing to a much bigger audience than in the junior shows”. But he adds ‘it's all good fun’ and says that he is really enjoying the experience.

Amy Jagger – Bobby/Barbara Amy started learning to dance at the age of two and has never looked back.. Her first memory of being on stage was carrying a doll and bowing to Anna in The King and I when she was five! Since then she has performed in musicals and plays in the Halifax area and during her university years in Lincoln, which include dancing in Sugar, Copacabana and Little Shop of Horrors and playing the spoilt Lydia in Sheridan’s The Rivals with Halifax Thespians. More recently, Amy has taken on serious roles as Julie in After Miss Julie, Mrs de Winter in Rebecca and Jill in Equus. Her favourite and most challenging time on stage was playing Ulla in the Halifax Operatic Society’s production of The Producers! She joined the society in 2007 and is looking forward to her third show with Buttershaw St. Paul’s.

e cast h t t u o b A Kathryn Tonks –

Alma One of Kathryn’s earliest memories of musical theatre was tagging along with her mum Anne, to watch her rehearse. She always loved mimicking her characters and looked forward to the day when she could be the one in the spotlight. Since being given the opportunity, Kathryn claims that she has taken some feisty roles in recent years such as Nikki (Sweet Charity) and Reno (Anything Goes) but she really enjoyed the challenge of Mabel – one of her favourite parts in our last production, Pirates of Penzance

Hannah Smithies Mimsie Hannah comes from a family of amateur performers and her first memory of being on stage was in ‘Hans Christian Anderson’ at the age of four. She started dance classes when she was just three years old and developed a love for ballet in particular as she grew up. Hannah has participated in countless musicals and concerts both dancing and playing parts, her favourite being ‘Val’ in ‘A Chorus Line’ in 2008. She was a member of several amateur dramatic groups until she went to University in 2004 and on moving back to Halifax in 2007 she joined Buttershaw St. Paul’s for their Production of ‘Thoroughly Modern Millie’. ‘Summer Holiday’ will be her third show with the society and she is really looking forward to opening night.

Phil Jowett – Jerry This is Phil’s ninth show with Buttershaw, his previous shows being ‘Me and My Girl’, ‘Mack and Mabel’, ‘Brigadoon’, ‘Crazy for you’, ‘Carousel’, ‘Sweet Charity’, ‘Thoroughly Modern Millie’, plus of course,‘Pirates’ where he enjoyed playing the Sergeant of Police Also for Spenborough Amateurs he has played roles in ‘Guys and Dolls’, ‘Merry Widow’, ‘Allo Allo’, ‘Dads Army’ and ‘Brassed Off’. When asked about doing all these shows, ‘What’s it like?’ His reply is always.... MARVELLOUS!.

Christa D’Apolito – Angie Christa started dancing at a very young age studying at Spotlight Stage School and Dorothy Stevens School of Ballet. She gained a BTEC National Diploma in Performing Arts and has been involved in other societies including the Bradford Youth Players and Skipton Amateurs. She first appeared with BSP at the age of 14 as a dancer in Mack and Mabel in 2003. Since then, Christa has played many exciting roles including Tallulah in Bugsy Malone, Louise in Carousel and Erma in Anything Goes.

Anne Tonks Stella Anne will be celebrating 40 years service to the Amateur Theatre this year, having started at a very young age with Bradford Amateurs on the Alhambra Stage. She has played many interesting and exciting roles over the years in and around Bradford, met and made many lovely friends. Recently elected Chairman of the Society she has directed the youth section for many years and is pleased to be playing alongside some of the recent junior members in Summer Holiday.

trapped for cash and in need of a holiday, four young London bus mechanics borrow a double-decker from their employers and remodel it into a mobile home. Don and his pals idea is to tour Europe and use the bus as their accommodation with the intention of starting a Holiday Tour business. Whilst travelling through France they meet three girls, a singing group called ‘DoReMi’, whose car ‘Shandy’ has broken down. Unable to fix it, they offer to give the girls a lift. After a night out at a Paris nightclub they then meet a stowaway, an American ‘boy’ called Bobby (but is actually a female pop starlet called Barbara and who is trying to escape from Stella, her pushy mother). Stella and Barbara’s manager Jerry tell the press that Barbara has been kidnapped. Barbara sees the headline in the local paper and immediately telephones her mother to let her know that she is fine but needs time to sort things out. On discovering that Barbara is travelling with a group of friends on the bus, Stella decides to make things difficult for her. After being delayed at the Swiss border, the boys discover that Bobby is actually Barbara - but the boys are happy to take her along. Whilst travelling through Italy they discover a young bride and her bridesmaids who have been stranded. The group help get them to the church on time although the journey is forty miles in the wrong direction which delays them from catching their ferry to Athens. Just when they think that all is lost they have an idea and manage to get there in time. After falling in love, Don and Barbara decide to get married and announce this at a press conference Stella has called. The press conference is interrupted by a member of the British Consul who informs them that London Transport has approved funding and Double Decker Tours is now in business. Before they start the business, it’s decided that they continue their ‘Summer Holiday’.

Come along and enjoy it with them!

A message from Sir Cliff Richard...

BACKGROUND TO SUMMER HOLIDAY... Summer Holiday was first released in February 1963, featuring Cliff Richard in his best-known film. The cast included Lauri Peters, Melvyn Hayes, Una Stubbs, Lionel Murton, Madge Ryan, David Kossoff, Ron Moody, and The Shadows. The movie was a huge box-office hit, thus repeating the success of Richard's 1961 film The Young Ones. ‘Summer Holiday, ‘The Next Time’, ‘Bachelor Boy’ and ‘Foot Tapper’ all reached Number one in the British charts during the first three months of 1963. Both the film and the title song captured something of the popular mood as relatively cheap continental holidays became available in Britain around that time. Summer Holiday was also turned into a stage musical in the mid 90s starring Darren Day in the role that Cliff played. It was a national tour and was very successful. It was revived yet again in 2003, starring Stefan Booth but later starring Darren Day again and also his future partner Suzanne Shaw, from the pop group Hear'say, as Bobby and Aimi MacDonald, as Shaw's mother. This tour was also very successful.
