elcome again to St George’s Hall and our production of Sweet Charity. This is a show that has not been performed in the city for a number of years, yet many of the musical numbers will be well known to you.

We are pleased to announce that we have a new President this year. Colin Marchant, who directed our shows for 11 years before retiring in 2002 was invited to take up the vacant position and he brings a wealth of experience to the office. We, along with many other societies, are finding it increasingly difficult to make a profit on our productions, so our charitable donations are becoming smaller than in recent years. This year we have donated over £800 to local charities but we do need your support to help us to continue this work. On Thursday evening we welcome The Lord Mayor of Bradford Councillor Choudhary Rangzeb; the Dean of Bradford, the Very Reverend David Ison; the Vicar of St Pauls’ Church, the Reverend David Griffiths, together with representatives from NODA and our neighbouring societies to our performance. This is the society’s 75th anniversary year and we would be delighted to see past and present members or patrons at our celebration lunch on Sunday 13th May at the Gomersal Park Hotel. Finally, may I take this opportunity to thank you for your continued support, I hope you enjoy being with us tonight, and have a safe journey home. With my best wishes,

Tony Gregson - Chairman

We are pleased to welcome back for the 5th successive year…

It has been a sad year for the society

Edward Blakemore was a Vice President of the society who joined in 1969. He possessed a strong bass voice and just loved to sing. He was also a member of a number of choirs and opera groups. He enjoyed being in the chorus, occasionally playing minor roles and in later years he became our security officer, looking after car park duties at our rehearsal venues. Everyone loved Eddie for his outgoing and cheerful personality. Carol Jarvis was the daughter of our prompter Marion and wife of our electrician Roy Smith and joined the society at the age of 15 as a dancer for our production of Waltzes from Vienna. She remained a member of our regular dancing team for many years and also played minor roles. Ill health forced her to retire from the stage, but she still kept a keen interest in the society. Joan Tordoff, the wife of our Vice President Colin, joined the society in 1961 for our production of No, No, Nannette. She was a regular chorus member of the society with her husband until their children were born, when to ease ‘baby sitting’ duties she stayed with Great Horton AOS where she became a committee member. She attended our own AGM just 3 weeks before her sudden death.

Obituaries

Dorothy Kilshaw joined the society in 1960 to support her husband Alan who had joined in1958 for our production of Brigadoon. At first she helped with costumes, but soon became an acting member playing cameo roles, always with great dignity. She continued to help with costumes particularly for our youth pantomimes, always dressing the ‘Dame’. When Alan became Chairman of the society, Dorothy supported him graciously on all occasions. Although her health curtailed her contribution in recent years, she remained a strong supporter of the society.

Eddie Musson played the bagpipes in our production of Brigadoon just 2 years ago and became really interested in supporting various society activities. Winnie Common was a keen supporter of the society who also provided rehearsal refreshments for many years. All her three daughters appeared in our productions before they were married. Kenneth McMahon was a friend and patron of the society for over 50 years. His son, grand daughter and great grand daughter are all members of the society.

We are grateful for their contributions to the society and we offer our love and sympathy to their families It is a long standing tradition for members of the cast to exchange small gifts which have some relevance, however slight, to the show. This year the shadow of cancer has touched several of our members, and so instead of buying gifts we have decided to make a donation to a local cancer charity. If you would like to join us there are containers in the foyer for your donations. Thankyou.

Cathryn Moorhouse – Charity Hope Valentine Cathryn has been involved in the theatre from a very young age, first appearing in the musical “Brigadoon”. She has since gone on to take many leading and supporting roles for societies all over West Yorkshire. Some of her favourite roles include Mabel in “Mack and Mabel”, the title role in “Gigi”, Eliza in “My Fair Lady” and Miss Adelaide in “Guys and Dolls”, but her favourite role to date is that of Charity. She trained at Hull University and has appeared in various television productions for YTV and Granada such as “Coronation Street” and “Blue Murder” and for the past four years has been seen making beds and removing bedpans amongst other nursing duties in the YTV drama “The Royal”. This year sees her celebrating her 28th year in Amateur Theatre.

Kathryn Tonks – Nickie

About the Cast

Kathryn has been on the Yorkshire Amateur circuit since the age of two, playing with local societies such as Idle and Thackley, Keighley, Spenborough and the Bradford Youth Players. Kathryn has enjoyed a variety of leading and supporting roles; she has recently enjoyed the challenge of three “straight” characters, Katie Brown (Calamity Jane) Julie Jordan (Carousel) and Sarah Brown (Guys and Dolls). Always in her element with character parts, Kathryn can hardly wait to get stuck into the ruthlessly saucy Nickie in Sweet Charity. Do you wanna have fun?

Peter McDonell – Vittorio Vidal Peter’s first musical appearance was in Showboat in Huddersfield in 1996. Since then he has taken on the parts of Capt von Trapp in Sound of Music, Georges in La Cage Aux Folles , Billis in South Pacific, Nathan in Guys and Dolls, as well as Hines in The Pajama Game and more recently Doolittle in My Fair Lady. Sweet Charity will be Peter’s second time with Buttershaw St Paul’s. His first show with our Society was in 2002, in 42nd Street when he played the part of Julian Marsh, which he repeated for Halifax AOS the following year. Peter is from Birkenhead but has lived in Yorkshire for 25 years. His local society is Halifax Light Opera Society where he is also a committee member. Away from musicals Peter loves sport and still plays football and cricket. He is a mad supporter of Tranmere Rovers!!

Louise Whyte – Helene Since starting out with the Bradford Youth Players, Louise has done many shows with local societies and has even picked up a few awards on the way. Her theatrical CV reads like a who’s who of the down-trodden, put-upon or just plain odd: Adelaide in Guys and Dolls; Mrs Mullins in Carousel; Audrey in Little Shop of Horrors; Dracula’s Mother in Dracula Spectacular although, there have been a few ‘feisty’ characters in there too; Sally Smith in Me and My Girl; Anytime Annie in 42nd Street; Irene in Crazy for You - not to mention a few more, how shall we put it, ‘divinely-inspired’ characters such as Mary Magdelene in Jesus Christ Superstar and Sister Mary Hubert in the infamous ‘Nunsense’. Louise is eagerly looking forward to adding another tart-with-a-heart to her CV playing ‘Helene’ and living it up, on-stage and off, with the girls from the Fandango Ballroom.

Richard Whyte – Oscar Linquist

n

This show marks Rick's tenth anniversary in amateur theatre. After starting his affair with BSP in ’97 he shacked up with the Bradford Youth Players for a few saucy years and had a string of sordid one-show-stands with the likes of NAPA, Encore and Spenborough. But, although he’s recently been seen cavorting with the Bradford Players in their pantomimes, it’s back home to BSP’s loving embrace that Rick always returns. If pushed, he'd say that Jeff in our production of Brigadoon was his favourite role, although his dream role would be one of the chimps in the PG Tips adverts. He has auditioned, but was deemed to be under-qualified.

The Story... As the days of the large scale Hollywood musical came to an end in the 1960s, a new trend grew up, that of taking old movie stories and making them into stage musicals. “Smiles of a Summer Night” became “A Little Night Music”, “Roxie Hart” became “Chicago” and Federico Fellini’s film “Nights of Cabiria” became “Sweet Charity”.

The story of Sweet Charity / Noda

Neil Simon wrote the book and veteran lyricist Dorothy Fields provided the words for Cy Coleman’s music. The show opened at the Palace Theatre, New York on the 29th January 1966 and ran for 608 performances. Its star was Gwen Verdon, who coincidentally later starred in Chicago, and her husband, Bob Fosse, won a Tony award for his choreography. In 1967 the London star was Juliet Prowse, but most people associate the role of Charity with Shirley McLaine who starred in the 1968 film version with John McMartin, Chita Rivera and Sammy Davis Jnr. The show tells the story of dance-hall hostess Charity who is desperate to find love , marriage, respectability and an escape route from the dance hall. She has a romantic entanglement with Italian film star Vittorio Vidal before becoming engaged to neurotic accountant Oscar Linquist. The big, brassy score includes such hits as, “I’m a Brass Band”, “Hey Big Spender” and “Rhythm of Life”. A very modern musical in its day, Charity now provides a slightly nostalgic look at some of the fads and fashions of the sixties. So sit back and laugh at the way your parents and grandparents used to dress or remember fondly the days when you had hair or wore short skirts.

Patron - Lord Lloyd Webber The National Operatic and Dramatic Association was founded in 1899 to ‘protect and advance the interests of operatic and dramatic art and of the societies engaged of therein’. Our Society is proud to be a member of NODA which has over 2300 societies and nearly 3000 individual members. The Association with its new headquarters in Peterborough, is able to advise societies on many aspects of amateur theatre and provides tailor-made insurance schemes and has its own extensive library. NODA encourages members to attend its Summer Schools, which consist of drama, stagecraft, opera, stage management, musical direction amongst many other topics. With Regional and National Conferences, workshops, seminars, awards and bursaries, together with the publication of quarterly news magazines, NODA provides the only national network for all areas of amateur theatre in the UK. We are part of the North Eastern region of the Association, our Area Councillor is Mr Chris Ingram and our Regional Representative is Ms Judith Smith whom we look forward to welcoming to our production this week.

Long Service Awards Several of our members have over the years received long service medals. These arw presented through NODA by the Society to recognise their valuable contribution to the amateur stage and their distinguished service to the Society. This year our beneficiaries are: Tony Gregson - Diamond Pin representing 55 years service Amateur Theatre Rita Horner and Geoff McMahon - 3rd Bar representing 40 years
