The Story It is the summer of the year 1926. The action takes place on the French Riviera and is set in a finishing school for young ladies. In this school, Polly, Maisie, and the girls live with the maid Hortense, and the headmistress Mme.Dubonnet. The girls yearn in song for a “Boy Friend”, and wealthy American Bobby catches Maisie by surprise and they dance to "Won't you Charleston With Me?" Polly's widowed father, Percy, then arrives at the school, to discover that the headmistress is an old flame of his whom he met years earlier in Paris. They sing "Fancy Forgetting" to rekindle the spark. The heroine, Polly Browne, though a millionaire's daughter, feels left out because she is the only one of her set who does not have a boyfriend and she needs a partner for the fancy dress ball. However, when the errand boy, Tony, who unknown to her is really the son of Lord and Lady Brockhurst, arrives to deliver her costume, they are immediately attracted to one another, and sing "I Could be Happy With You." Later, they meet at the beach and dream about "A Room in Bloomsbury." They both keep their wealthy backgounds a secret from each other and decide to meet that evening at the Carnival Ball. When Polly goes to meet her new boyfriend on the promenade, Tony is seen by Lord and Lady Brockhurst, who are passing. He runs off, and in the confusion it is assumed that he is a thief. Polly announces that she won’t go to the Ball after all. At the ball, Bobby and the three boys propose to Maisie and the three girls, but the girls reply in unison "We'll let you know at midnight," and everyone dances "The Riviera." In an attempt to woo the flirty Dulcie, Lord Brockhurst sings with her "It's Never Too Late to Fall in Love". Polly, still depressed, talks to Mme Dubonnet, and together they sing “Poor Little Pierrette”. Polly appears at the Ball. Tony arrives and asks, "May I have this dance, Pierrette?" and then kisses her. They forgive each other and discover that Percy and Madame Dubonnet are getting married. The clock strikes midnight, all the girls unanimously accept the boys' proposals! The last scene has everyone dancing when Bobby, speaking the last line of the show, asks, "So how about that Charleston?"

Producer’s Note
Director / Choreographer Michael A. Kirkby
Michael, from Leeds began his musical career at the age of 13 playing the role of Barnaby in ‘Hello Dolly’, the youngest player ever to play the part. Since then he has gone on to play lead roles in over 100 musicals in shows such as ‘Singing in the Rain’, ‘Crazy for You’, ‘42nd Street’, and ‘Anything Goes’. His favourite roles include Kipps in ‘Half a Sixpence’, a part he has played nine times all over Yorkshire, and the tiltle role in ‘Hans Anderson’ which he has played six times including once with Great Horton in 1986. He recently went back on stage to play in ‘Oklahoma’ and ‘Sugar’. Michael’s television credits include five years on ‘Junior Showtime’, ‘The Flaxton Boys’, ‘Justice’ with Margaret Lockwood and the paper boy in ‘Queenies Castle’ with Diana Dors. His film credits include Alan Parker’s hit musical ‘Bugsy Malone’ in which at the age of 14 he was lucky enough to land the role of Angelo in Fat Sam’s Gang. Michael a trained singer and dancer turned his talents to to Directing and Choreographing 17 years ago and now has over 50 shows to his credit, often playing the lead role as well. Michael has had several award winning musicals at the Edinburgh Festival. He was recently involved with Yorkshire Television’s programme ‘ After They Were Famous’ which reunited the cast of Bugsy Malone which was filmed at the Pinewood Studios in London. Michael is delighted to be back at the Alhambra with Great Horton Theatre Company and hopes that you, our audience, have a rip roaring evening.
“The Boy Friend” marks 35 years as Musical Director in the amateur theatre for John, having started with a production of “Oliver” in 1972 for Yeadon A.O.D.s. In the intervening years he has conducted dozens of concerts and over sixty musicals, though this is his first opportunity to perform ‘The Boy Friend”. John is very happy to be working once again with Mike Kirkby, having first worked with him in “Hans Anderson” in 1986 for Great Horton. Later this year John is looking forward to directing the music for one of his all-time favourites, “Mack and Mabel”, with Keighley Amateurs.

Obituaries It is with deep regret that we mark the passing of three of Great Horton Theatre Company’s stalwarts. Jean Winn Our longest serving member, Jean spent her lifetime involved with Great Horton. Her father was a founder member and was responsible for re-forming the society after the war. He became Chairman followed by Jean’s husband, Bob, into that position. Jean sold programmes from the age of 14 in the Alhambra foyer. Never one for the limelight, she left that to husband Bob and daughter Carol. For years she booked ticket sales, a massive task at which she excelled. Having lived with theatre all her life, there was little she didn’t know. Her favourite nights were costume parades and she would often take a costume home to alter for someone who was unable to sew. When Jean was asked to cut the cake to mark Great Horton’s centenary, she did so with great pride in memory of her parents and family. Josie Skirrow One of GHTC’s great characters, Josie was the first member to receive her NODA diamond medal for 60 years service to amateur theatre. She was a chorus member, principal player, committtee member and social committee member. For years, she arranged our annual dinner dance and on retirement took prime position on the podium selling programmes until she was well into her 80s. Joan Tordoff A lady with style and class, Joan never forgot her roots and was happy to remain a chorus member with all her friends. Always supportive, ready to help where required and organisation was her greatest strength. As a dedicated, committe and social committee member she organised many theatre trips and London weekends which we all enjoyed. Full of good ideas Joan was a great asset to GHTC. We celebrate their lives! We will all miss them!
