President Lorraine Swaine
Chairman’s Notes HI EVERYONE, I would like to take this opportunity to wish you a warm welcome to our new venue, Cleckheaton Town Hall. What a way to bring in a new chapter in the history of Great Horton, with the Yorkshire Premiere of “The Likes of Us”. As you may know Great Horton Theatre Company have been going for over 100 years and over the last few we have had some very tough choices to make. One of which was where we would stage our next production, as the usual venue was not commercially viable, so a joint decision was made to travel down to this wonderful hall. For which I would like to thank the team at Kirklees for being so accommodating. Putting on a Regional Premiere is full of obstacles and I would like to thank the team who helped make this production happen, particularly John and Carol.

Production Team Michael Hellawell DIRECTOR Born in Huddersfield and currently living in Longwood with his wife, Sue and their three teenage children, Michael has a wealth of experience as an all round entertainer. Equally comfortable in musicals, festivals, plays and pantomime, he has sung with operatic societies throughout West Yorkshire including many shows in Huddersfield, Bradford, Leeds and Wakefield. He is also a past winner of Mrs Sunderland competitions. His favourite musical performances embrace Fiddler on the Roof, My Fair Lady, Oliver, Annie and he has repeated his part in Bellas, having played the title role in the 1990 world premier. Michael was a founder member of the West Yorkshire Pro Am Company and considers his participation in their productions of A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum and the highly acclaimed Man of la Mancha to be the zenith of his musical experiences. Michael has played for a number of years with Great Horton Theatre Company and is thoroughly enjoying his new role as Director of ‘The Likes of Us’, having successfully produced several theatrical entertainments over recent years.
Chris Brook

Helen Dewhirst
CHOREOGRAPHER
Helen began her career with the amateurs from the early age of 6 appearing as 'Gretel' in The Sound of Music at the Bradford Alhambra & continued having many appearances there throughout her childhood, including being part of the 'Sunbeam' troop appearing alongside Russ Abbott & Les Denis. Whilst training and teaching at Scala Performing Arts she also formed her relationship with Great Horton Theatre Company taking the part of 'Pepper' in their 1985 production of Annie. She continued for many years as part of the dancing troop and moved on to become Assistant Choreographer working alongside her good friend Lorraine Swaine. Having choreographed for several societies within Bradford & Huddersfield, Helen is particularly enjoying working on 'The Likes of Us' as it's the first opportunity for both of her daughters to enjoy being part of the Great Horton Theatre Company with her.

TimRice LYRICIST Tim Rice was born in 1944. He began song writing in 1965 in which year the first song he wrote ‘That’s My Story’ (tune as well as words) was recorded by a rock group called the Nightshift whose career never recovered. That same year he met fellow budding songwriter Andrew Lloyd Webber whose musical ambitions were in theatre rather than rock or pop. They teamed up and wrote four musicals together from 1965 – 1978. The first, The Likes of Us (1965-6) was performed for the first time in 2005 and became available on CD a mere 40 years after its creation. The other three, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (1968), Jesus Christ Superstar (1969-71) and Evita (1976-78) were more immediate successes. Feeling certain that they could never top this lot, the pair went their separate ways in the early eighties, whereupon Andrew Lloyd Webber immediately topped that lot with Cats. Tim Rice then wrote Blondel (1983), a mediaeval romp, with Stephen Oliver, which ran for a year in London but not for long anywhere else. This was followed in 1986 by Chess, in collaboration with ABBA’s Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson. Chess had a healthy run in the West End but flopped on Broadway in 1988, the New York Times bloke being particularly forceful in his disapproval. In 1989 Tim translated the famous French musical Starmania (by Michel Berger and Luc Plamondon) into English, which resulted in a number one album – in France. In the nineties he worked primarily and happily with the Disney empire, contributing lyrics to the movies Aladdin (music Alan Menken) and The Lion King, (music Elton John and Hans Zimmer) and to the stage shows Beauty and the Beast (Alan Menken), The Lion King and Aida (both Sir Elton). Between Disney commitments he wrote the words for Cliff Richard’s theatrical blockbuster Heathcliff (music John Farrar), which toured the UK in 1995-96. He is currently reworking an operatic musical he has written with Alan Menken (King David), and on new treatments, for both stage and screen, of Chess, the New York Times bloke having been replaced. In 2007 he wrote the lyrics for 8 songs with music by Tchaikovsky, for the film Nutcracker - The Untold Story, released towards the end of 2008. He has just completed a new stage work about the life of Machiavelli. Since 1991 he has been the Chairman of the Foundation for Sport and the Arts which has distributed over £100 million to sporting and artistic causes. He has won a variety of awards, mainly for the wrong things, or for simply turning up. He lives in London, Cornwall and on the motorway between the two, has three children, his own cricket team and a knighthood.

In 2006 he oversaw a new production of Evita in London, a unique version of The Phantom of the Opera in Las Vegas and pioneered television casting for musical theatre with the hit BBC series How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria?, which searched for a Maria in The Sound of Music. THE BACKGROUND... The Likes of Us was the first collaboration between award-winning composers Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber. The relationship began when a 17-year-old Lloyd Webber received a letter from the then 21-year-old Rice offering himself as a “with-it writer”. And there a winning partnership was born. Although written in 1965, until 2009 The Likes of Us had only ever been performed twice, and Rice and Lloyd Webber moved onto global hits such as Joseph, Evita and Jesus Christ Superstar. However, The Likes of Us was never forgotten and now with the approval of Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber has been launched by the National Operatic and Dramatic Association (NODA) and the Really Useful Group (RUG) to amateur theatre prior to its professional release and eventual appearance in the West End. Not only is this a brave and ground-breaking move, but an exciting one for anyone involved in theatre. Great Horton Theatre Company are delighted to have been given the honour to present the Yorkshire Premiere. “A musical that has existed for 40 years hidden away from view, is coming out from the mist of time and chimneys” Really Useful Group, 2005.
GROUND BREAKING THEATRE... West End – professional – amateur: this is the cycle of most productions, including Rice and Lloyd Webber’s most notable hits. It can often take years for such high-profile productions to leave the West End and longer still to make it on to the amateur stage. The decision by RUG to allow The Likes of Us to mark its beginnings on the amateur stage is a real landmark for theatre.
PROFESSIONAL AND AMATEUR UNITE... The unique partnership between NODA and RUG will give amateur theatre enthusiasts unprecedented access to a musical collaboration that will provide real scope to express their creativity and a genuine opportunity to encourage more young people into amateur theatre.
THE STORY... The Likes of Us is the story of the life of Dr Thomas Barnardo, a man who was evangelical, entrepreneurial and philanthropic, and whose crusade to rescue children living on the streets became world renowned. The Likes of Us is best known for the much-quoted Tim Rice lyric: "Here I have a lovely parrot, sound in wind and limb, I can guarantee that there is nothing wrong with him". 10

THE WORK OF THOMAS BARNARDO AND THE STORY BEHIND
When Thomas John Barnardo was born in Dublin in 1845 no one could have predicted that he would become one of the most famous men in Victorian Britain. At the age of 16, after converting to Protestant evangelicalism he decided to become a medical missionary in China and so set out for London to train as a doctor. The London in which Thomas Barnardo arrived in 1866 was a city struggling to cope with the effects of the Industrial Revolution. The population had dramatically increased and much of this increase was concentrated in the East End, where overcrowding, bad housing, unemployment, poverty and disease were rife. A few months after Thomas Barnardo came to London an outbreak of cholera swept through the East End killing more than 3,000 people and leaving families destitute. Thousands of children slept on the streets and many others were forced to beg after being maimed in factories. In 1867, Thomas Barnardo set up a ragged school in the East End, where poor children could get a basic education. One evening a boy at the Mission, Jim Jarvis, took Thomas Barnardo around the East End showing him children sleeping on roofs and in gutters. The encounter so affected him he decided to devote himself to helping destitute children. In 1870, Barnardo opened his first home for boys in Stepney Causeway. He regularly went out at night into the slum district to find destitute boys. One evening, an 11-year old boy, John Somers (nicknamed 'Carrots') was turned away because the shelter was full. He was found dead two days later from malnutrition and exposure and from then on the home bore the sign 'No Destitute Child Ever Refused Admission'. Victorians saw poverty as shameful as a result of laziness or vice. However Thomas Barnardo accepted all children and stressed that every child deserved the best possible start in life, whatever their background a philosophy that still inspires the charity today. By the time Thomas Barnardo died in 1905, the charity he founded ran 96 homes caring for more than 8,500 children. In 1988 the organisation changed its name from Dr Barnardo's to Barnardo's to reflect the contrast with its Victorian past. The last traditional-style home closed in 1989. Today they continue Thomas Barnardo’s work and Barnardo’s is a leading children's charity working directly with over 100,000 children, young people and their families every year. They run over 400 vital projects across the UK to help some of the most vulnerable children and young people believe in themselves. Barnardo’s vision today is that the lives of all children and young people should be free from poverty, abuse and discrimination. Barnardo’s believe in the abused, the vulnerable, the forgotten and the neglected. They pledge to support them, stand up for them and bring out the best in each and every child.

Obituaries Geoffrey Turton... A lifelong member of GHTC Geoff was the Society's Secretary, Committee Member and latterly our Honorary Auditor. Geoff was always helpful and will be sadly missed by his old friends here at Great Horton.
Roy Markwell... A quiet and reserved man, Roy was one of the most popular members of GHTC. For many years Roy was in charge of refreshments keeping us all supplied with tea and coffee at rehearsals. During show week he took on the supervision of programme sales. We will all miss his smiling face.
