FROM THE CHAIRMAN - TONY GREGSON

Dear Friends, elcome again to St George’s Hall and the Bradford ‘Premiere’ of Thoroughly Modern Millie. This will be the first time that this show has been performed in the city and the Society are privileged to have the opportunity to produce one of the most popular new shows of recent years. This musical set in the 1920’s opened in London’s West End in October 2003, with Amanda Holden and Maureen Lipman heading the cast and running continuously for over a year. It is a show which gives the production team a broad canvas to work on and I hope that you agree that our very talented team of Ian, Stephen and Janet have done a magnificent job.

W

We, along with many other societies, are finding it increasingly more difficult to make a profit on our productions. Mounting a big Amateur production in a professional theatre is a very costly business, but thanks to your support and our dedicated members who work throughout the year, we do usually succeed and have a little money over to donate to local charities. On Thursday evening our President will welcome The Lord Mayor of Bradford, Cllr Robin Owens; the Dean of Bradford, the Very Reverend David Ison; the Vicar of St Pauls’ Church, the Reverend David Griffiths; together with representatives from NODA and our neighbouring societies to our performance. We are pleased to welcome back

for the 6th successive year…

OUR PRODUCTION TEAM

Finally, may I take this opportunity to thank you for your continued support, I hope you enjoy being with us tonight, and have a safe journey home.

With my best wishes,

Tony Gregson - Chairman IAN SAPIRO Musical Director

OBITUARIES

MARGARET DRINKEL A Life Member of the Society and holder of the NODA Gold Bar with stud for 55 years service to the amateur stage. Margaret was a real stalwart of the Society, appearing with our chorus until 2 years ago, she prompted for our youth productions and worked tirelessly for the Society, a tradition carried on with her daughter Anne and granddaughter Kathryn.

RAYMOND DOWNIE For many years our property master together with his wife Renee, Raymond was also a former stage manager for the Society and helped with our last years’ production, although unwell. A dedicated and versatile hard worker with a dry sense of humour, Raymond will be sadly missed for the many roles that he filled backstage and we are very pleased that Renee is able to continue with us again this year.

CLARICE STOCKER At 95, our oldest member and Vice President. Clarice was our pianist for over 20 years, sometimes playing in the orchestra pit, but particularly and fondly remembered for her work at dancing rehearsals. She was also a willing supporter of the Society and always at hand for any member who may have required musical assistance.

We give grateful thanks for their contributions to the Society and we offer our love and sympathy to their families

Patron - Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber

NODA

The National Operatic and Dramatic Association was founded in 1899 to ‘protect and advance the interests of operatic and dramatic art and of the societies engaged of therein’. Our Society is proud to be a member of NODA which has over 2300 societies and nearly 3000 individual members. The Association with its new headquarters in Peterborough, is able to advise societies on many aspects of amateur theatre and provides tailor-made insurance schemes and has its own extensive library. NODA encourages members to attend its Summer Schools, which consist of drama, stagecraft, opera, stage management, musical direction amongst many other topics. With Regional and National Conferences, workshops, seminars, awards and bursaries, together with the publication of quarterly news magazines, NODA provides the only national network for all areas of amateur theatre in the UK. We are part of the North Eastern region of the Association, our Area Councillor is Mr Chris Ingram and our Regional Representative is Mrs Judith Smith whom we look forward to welcoming to our production this week.

Long Service Awards Several of our members have over the years received long service medals. These are presented through NODA by the Society, to recognise their valuable contribution to the amateur stage and to their distinguished service to the Society.

This year our NODA recipients are 25 30 35 40 45 50

ABOUT THE CAST

LOUISE WHYTE On 31st January 2003, something important happened to Louise. Depending on who you ask, you're likely to get a different answer. If you ask her husband, it's the day on which she said 'yes' to his marriage proposal. But if you ask Louise, it was the day that she first saw Sutton Foster light up New York as Millie Dillmount in the original Broadway production of 'Thoroughly Modern Millie', such was the impact the show had on her. Oh yes...she would also mention that she got engaged on that day too! Now 5 years on, Louise is fulfiling an ambition in having the opportunity to bring Millie to life herself. It's a far cry from her theatrical debut, 17 years ago, as an ensemble member in the play version of 'Les Miserables' with the Bradford Youth Players. Since then she's been sullen as Mrs Mullin in 'Carousel', saintly as Sr Mary Hubert in the infamous 'Nunsense' and scatty as Audrey in 'Little Shop of Horrors', along with many other challenging and successful roles. However with 'Millie,' Louise feels that she has 'turned the corner' and she hopes you ‘thoroughly' enjoy the show! This one is for her green glass love...

STEVE REDFERN has been involved in performing arts from a young age having grown up in a family with a keen interest in musical theatre. He studied the piano and trombone, playing at a high level before taking his musical knowledge into small cameo roles in amateur stage productions. His debut with us was in 2001 as Billy in 42nd Street and he has since played many other leads for BSP including Billy in Carousel, Bobby in Crazy for You and Tommy in Brigadoon. He has also played with distinction the demanding roles of Tony in West Side Story, and Curly in Oklahoma with societies in Huddersfield and Halifax.

RICK WHYTE often wonders how he'd look in a bobbed wig. It's not something he dwells on usually, but having already played Jimmy Smith in Huddersfield AOS's production of 'Millie' in November and Mr Graydon in this production, he only needs to play one more character in 'Millie' for the hat-trick... Aside from the horror of his impending 30th birthday, this last year has been a pretty good one for Rick: he started out playing Oscar in 'Sweet Charity' for BSP last January, swiftly followed by Judas in Applause Theatre Co's production of 'Jesus Christ Superstar' in May, and then into the 'Milliethon' that has seen him rehearsing 'Thoroughly Modern Millie' in one form or another for the last eight months! Rick hopes you enjoy our production, he's really enjoyed rehearsing it but has found his wife's new seduction technique to be…novel, to say the least!

KATHRYN TONKS has been on the amateur circuit since the age of two, playing with BSP and other societies such as Idle & Thackley, Keighley, Spenborough and the Bradford Youth Players. She is in her element playing character parts, such as the saucy Nickie in our last production of Sweet Charity. Kathryn has also enjoyed a variety of leading and supporting roles but now has the unique distinction of playing all the leading ‘Brown’ roles - Sarah in Guys and Dolls, Katie in Calamity Jane and now as Dorothy in Millie.

ANNE

ABOUT THE CAST

ANNE TONKS has been with BSP since the age of 15 playing many leading roles from Annie Get Your Gun to Rosalinda in Die Fledermaus. This year is a challenge as Mrs Meers is a split character who is an American con woman pretending to be Chinese! Anne plays alongside her daughter Kathryn as Miss Dorothy and husband Simon is stage manager with son Christopher back stage – quite a family affair.

CATHRYN MOORHOUSE has been involved in the theatre from a very young age, first appearing in the musical “Brigadoon”. Some of the roles that she has performed include Mabel in “Mack and Mabel”, the title role in “Gigi”, Eliza in “My Fair Lady”, Miss Adelaide in “Guys and Dolls” and her favourite role of “Sweet Charity” which she last performed with us last year. She has also appeared in various television productions such as “Coronation Street” and “Blue Murder” and more recently has been seen making beds etc. in the YTV’s “The Royal”.

DIANE BOLLAND is one of the few who can say that she took part in a society production before she was born. Her mother was the society’s leading lady at the time and her father was chairman for many years. Her more conventional debut was in the world amateur premiere of “Charlie Girl” and she has performed in nearly every show since. She choreographed the Youth Pantomime for 25 years and also ran the Concert party during the 80’s.

JONNY HIRST first appeared with BSP at the age of 6 in the junior pantomime before taking part in our Kiss Me Kate, at the age of 16. Following a few years away whilst at university, he rejoined BSP in 2000, and has appeared in many productions, as well as taking on roles in Halifax and Huddersfield. Johnny has enjoyed the challenge of learning a new language for the part of Bun Foo , and has taken every opportunity to visit the Chinese take-away in preparation for the role, all in the name of ‘research’.

ANDY REDFERN is returning to BSP after spending many years with a variety of societies across both Calderdale and Kirklees. One of Andy’s first stage appearances was at the age of 11 when he played the lead role in Oliver. In and amongst his dedication to performing Andy has gained a degree while studying at the University of Huddersfield. With many hours spent learning aspects of the Chinese dialect he is now looking forward to performing a very different kind of character.

THE STORY OF THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE

Unlike most musicals where a successful stage show transfers to the big screen, ‘Thoroughly Modern Millie’ began life as a 1967 film starring, amongst others, Julie Andrews and Mary Tyler Moore. Audiences had to wait until April 2002 for the Broadway opening of the stage show. It was, however, worth the wait, the production winning no less than six Tony awards and running for 903 performances. 2003 saw the West End production starring Amanda Holden as Millie, Maureen Lipman as Mrs Meers and Sheila Ferguson as Muzzy. ‘Millie’ is a light hearted and lively show set in New York of the 1920’s. Small town girl Millie Dillmount arrives in New York determined to embrace the new ‘modern’ lifestyle. She has a plan which involves finding and marrying a wealthy boss and letting her head rule her heart. However, ‘fate’ takes a hand and, despite finding a boss who meets all her requirements, she cannot seem to stop thinking about the totally unsuitable Jimmy. To add to her troubles she has a room at the Hotel Priscilla, run by the inscrutable Mrs Meers, which boasts an unusually high turnover of residents. Fortunately Millie and her friends are able to tap dance their way out of trouble and live happily ever after. Full of tuneful melodies and lively humour, ‘Millie’ is very much a feel good show, just the tonic to brighten up a dark January night. So sit back, relax and enjoy a couple of hours of pure escapism.

If you have enjoyed this production and would be interested in joining us, why not come and be a part of BSP AODS? We will welcome anyone who would like to take part ‘on stage’ or would be willing to help us in any other capacity. There are many roles that may be of interest, such as making ‘props’, moving scenery, helping with wardrobes, selling programmes, or assisting with publicity etc. If you could help us with advertising or sponsorship or feel that you can offer any other form of assistance then please contact our Secretary Gillian Bastow on
