A Letter From The Publisher

STEPPING INTO THE REAL YOU IN 2016 When you read the interview you’ll see the tips and advice Becky leaves for you to get started to owning who you are and the business God has placed in you.

C Can you believe we are already in the month of February; our second month in 2016 and issue? Wow, I’m so excited about the season many of you are currently in. Embrace and accept this season and walk in it being the real you. If January has been an amazing month I truly believe the remainder of the months will be even better.

This month is our special edition “The Entrepreneur” issue. We are featuring women entrepreneurs who not only discovered how to live a better life, but they empower other women to do the same. These women believe that God has designed a life for us beyond the norm and they’re willing to show you how to tap into that lifestyle. In this issue you’re going to see my conversation with the BOSSpreneur, Becky A. Davis who, might I add, is an amazing woman. Becky’s smile, and style showcases a confident woman who knows who she is and she walks gracefully in it. Becky’s interview reveals she’s passionate and full of resources and doesn’t mind sharing it with those who are serious about living a better life to not only help themselves, but help others as well.

Next on the list… How do you know rather or not you need a Public Relations representative (PR) to help take your business to the next level? I had the opportunity to talk to the PR Star: Destiny Good who is an Entertainment Publicist and she provided some amazing tips on how to determine rather or not you need a PR, understanding the function of a PR, how to decide which PR is best for you as well as some do-ityourself marketing tips. I was excited chatting with these ladies and hope you will get pumped about what they share as well. Lastly, I hope this issue will help stir and motivate the entrepreneur on the inside of you. Remember, if God gave you the vision, He will make the provision… I can’t wait to hear your feedback about this issue! THINKING BIGGER

Going Harder &LIVING BETTER Becky A. Davis: The BOSSpreneur PROMOTING PURPOSE WOMEN

B

This year Promoting Purpose Women magazine means business… I’m excited and thrilled to chat with the CEO and founder of BOSSpreneur Becky Davis. It’s always an honor to watch women like Becky strive to not only achieve a better life for themselves, but they push others as well. After reading this interview I pray that you’ll connect with Becky and allow her to push you to THINK BIGGER, GO HARDER & LIVE BETTER. Sherrell: For those who may not know you quite yet, tell us a bit about who you are and what you do?

Becky: Who I am: There are so many parts to me. I am first a Christian who seeks to please God, a wife to my Godsent husband, a mother of four out-ofthe-house adult children, a visionary of greater things, a creative mind of possibility, an out-of-the-box thinker, an entrepreneur on fire to help other women and a greatness facilitator that empowers women.

What I do: I’m known as the “Chief BOSSpreneur” for the ability to help women build a legacy by converting their intention into action to become successful entrepreneurs. I’ve been called the “Entrepreneur’s Secret Weapon” for my straight-forward coaching skills that develop women into well-rounded business owners. I consider myself to be very practical, with a street-savvy style who is open to sharing real-life stories of ups and downs, highs and lows, good and bad, success and failure if it’s going to help someone else.

Sherrell: Amazing! How did you get started with wanting to help others live a better life, and how did BOSSpreneur come about?

Becky: I wanted to do what I’m doing now when I was 25, almost 25 years ago. I attended a training and the speaker blew me away. From then on, I wanted to impact people the same way she did for me. But fear set in and I ran into corporate America; and still the dream would not die. While there I was able to learn the skills of presenting, teaching, coaching and increased my confidence level. I became passionate about entrepreneurs when our company acquired a new company that had franchise locations and I became responsible for 30 of them. I was given a list of six stores to close because they were losing money. When I went into those locations and met with the owners and the team, I quickly realized why they were losing money and gave them feedback on what they could do immediately to increase their sales. Two of the locations remained opened because of my coaching and support as their business consultant. I realized that they couldn’t be the only businesses closing because of lack of planning, poor execution, and no real strategic plan. That’s where my love to train, teach and coach collided with my heart to help entrepreneurs stay up after they start up. I was known as the “turnaround queen” because I was able to consistently take poor performing locations and get them on the path to profits.

Photo credit: Kim Taylor of Kim’s Photography I have 20 years of leadership and management experience so I was a BOSS in my 20’s, but when I left corporate America to start my own business. I was still a boss just for myself, which made me a BOSSpreneur. One of my favorite quotes came from a good friend of mine Quinn Gentry and I added a twist to it to say, “A Boss signs the back of a check, a BOSSpreneur signs the front of checks.” I’m on a mission to help Purpose Driven Women entrepreneurs break through the noise to achieve exceptional business results. Sherrell: Is there anything you wish you could have changed? Becky: When I look back, yes, there are a lot of things I could have done better.

I could have been cautious of how I spent my money for business. I got involved in every networking function, luncheon, or event and more than half of the events I went to were a waste of time and money because it was not the right place to build relationships nor did my target market hang out there. I would have partnered sooner. Like I stated earlier, you cannot do everything. I came up with some creative ways to get help. I would have tested everything before I launched it. I started out testing but got lazy and I paid for it, literally paid for it because my community did not ask for it, I wanted them to have it. They won, because no sales will make you stop and take notice.

B

I’m grateful for all my mistakes because they are what have encouraged growth for me and my business. Today I wouldn’t change it but during the tough time, I would in a heartbeat. Sherell: What are the biggest misconceptions entrepreneurs have when it comes to starting a successful business?

Becky: One misconception is that if I have a good idea I can make money. You have to do more than have a good idea; you need to know how to pitch that idea and how to effectively market that idea. The idea means nothing if it’s the best kept secret. Another misconception is that you control everything. Wrong. Your customer controls everything you do. You will realize this when you see zero dollars in your bank account. And I have to share this one, “You’ll eventually succeed if you work hard.” Not true. I know a lot of hard working entrepreneurs. If you work smart by getting help, listening to customer, taking calculated risks are a few ways to work smart. Sherrell: What should all entrepreneurs invest in to be successful?

Becky: If you don’t grow why would you expect your business to grow? Invest in your personal and professional development. The better you become the better your business becomes. John Maxwell said it best, “You must know yourself to grow yourself.”

Sherrell: We’d love to go back and talk about your program BOSSpreneur, tell us a little more in-depth about it and what should entrepreneurs gain from the program?

Becky: I have two BOSSpreneur programs, 1.0 and 2.0. In 1.0, I created this program based on customer and community feedback. So many women want to start a business but didn’t know where because it can be overwhelming. So I created The Bosspreneur Successful Startup Kit. The Bosspreneur Successful Startup Kit tells you everything from how to obtain a business license to how to successfully launch your ideas. You will learn about financial planning, funding and finding your ideal client. The kit will also teach you how build relationships and marketing strategies that create opportunities. Basically it teaches you everything you need to know to go from being a boss to Bosspreneur.

In 2.0 it’s called Cracking The BOSS Code. It helps ease the pain and frustration of struggling women entrepreneurs by unlocking their unique code to clients and cash. I’ve learned that a cookie-cuter approach to business never works because every business is different. It’s for women who have been in business for 3 or more years but they are stuck and need a breakthrough. There are 10 codes that cost a business money.

We identify your top 3 and put a blueprint together focused on those three. We help you stay focused and on track. Sherrell: Do you mind providing a few tips to help stir our reader’s interest in wanting to have a better life as an entrepreneur/boss? Becky: Believe it’s possible. If you can’t see it, it will never be revealed to you. I don’t need to wait for my miracle to show up before I believe that it’s coming. Don’t let your past hold your present hostage and miss out on a bright future. I start rejoicing before the manifestation. Fear, failure, doubt and adversity will always try to stop you from greatness. They are kryptonite to greatness. Fear does two things. It’s a thief because it will steal your dreams, desires, aspirations or anything you allow it to. It also paralyzes. When you are fearful most of the time you take no action, you do nothing and just hope things get better. You have to go to war with fear. Get in the ring, stand toe to toe and take the first punch. Sherrell: What is one thing you wish women entrepreneurs would do more of in order to be successful as a whole? Becky: Ask for help. We struggle as women to ask for help and not only in business. We don’t want people to know we don’t have it all together or that we don’t know everything. One is too small a number to achieve greatness. The bible says, “We have not not.” because we ask

A lot of businesses struggle or never get going because they never ask for help. That’s why the franchise locations were closing; they didn’t want anyone to know they did not know how to run a business (When you have to close your business that’s a clue.). Sherrell: How does purpose and faith play a factor in your success? Becky: I could talk all day on this. It is the foundation of who I am so it is what directs my path. The game changer for me was belief. I talked about it and felt like I was strong in faith. It wasn’t until January 4, 2012, that my faith and belief grew stronger. I was rushed to the emergency room on January 3rd at 11 pm. I’d had abdominal surgery 6 days earlier. I fainted, my vitals were up and down, the color in my skin was leaving, my veins had collapsed, and I was losing consciousness. I can still hear the word of the nurse, the urgency in her voice and the concern by the speed in which she was speaking, when she said, “We need to get her to surgery STAT or we’re going to lose her.” I just prayed. I had been hemorrhaging for six days from the first surgery because the doctor left an organ open inside of me. The fact that I am alive was a clear sign to me that God wanted me to be about my purpose. It was what I call “A Godfirmation.” A confirmation from God.

Sherrell: I’ve seen those bling out BOSS shirts and I love it! Tell us about those and any other merchandise you’re using to empower and motivate? Becky: I love words that empower, so I created them to help women feel great about being BOSSpreneurs. I have a shirt that says, “I’m walking in my purpose, passion and power,” which is what most entrepreneurs are doing in business.

Sherrell: Tell us what can we expect to see from BOSSpreneur this year? Becky: Last year I was hired by Odyssey Media to do a 15-city tour for entrepreneurs and it went great, so we are working on the 2016 fall tour. I am also planning a 5-city tour teaching women how to Crack Their BOSS Code (CTBC) that helps them unlock a flow of client and cash. I currently do this CTBC in Atlanta only. I’m working on a couple of partnerships with major corporate companies that I want to work with and be a brand sponsor.

Sherrell: Finally, I have to say I enjoy watching your work and growth. Tell our readers some of the outcomes or testimonies you’ve received from your program?

Some of what I’ve heard is, “You inspire me to live my dreams and purpose,” “What you shared changed my life and I made more money because I followed your system.” The one that really gets me is, “I’m still in business because what I learned from you.” I’m blown away when I get a box in the mail as a thank you for how my speech affected their life. Women have even emailed me their action plan to let me know they are taking steps after a speech. I thank God for the gift of exhortation and encouragement and I don’t take it lightly or for granted. To learn more go to www.beckyadavis.com and follow on all social sites @bosspreneur.

Becky: I am always humbled by the testimonials and feedback that I get from women, on my social sites, websites and event surveys.

Kim Taylor PICTURE PERFECT

Kim Taylor is a genius when it comes to photography; she works in excellence and captures the true inner beauty of her clients. If you don’t believe me her work speaks for itself. One she just added to her portfolio can be seen on the February cover of Promoting Purpose Women magazine featuring Becky A. Davis. Sherrell: Tell us a little bit about your journey; what led you to become Founder of Kim’s Photography? Kim: I found my love for photography in high school. My freshman math teacher was a photographer, and one day she decided to set up equipment and allowed the class to photograph one another. From the moment I got behind the camera, instantly, I awakened my passion. I knew this is where I belonged and what I wanted to do. I knew that I would one day have Kim’s Photography. And here I am, 20+ years later living out my dream.

Sherrell: Take us behind the scenes, what’s a typical day like for you? Kim: Let’s see, a typical day… Starts about 7 a.m. and this is when I check/ respond to e-mails, look at and post on my social media forums, and read a few photography blogs, etc. On days where I have sessions, I tend to schedule them early morning, or late evening, when it’s yummy lighting. However, every day, is about editing. I am up late nights perfecting my work. I am a perfectionist! If I envisioned it while photographing it, I want that exact vision conveyed. I spend countless hours working on the final product, before it is delivered to the client. Sherrell: What was it like for you starting off as a woman entrepreneur? Kim: It has been the best ride of my entire life. I love my business. I’m never tired of it. Although, sometimes fearful of certain projects, like weddings. For the longest, I would decline them, (I’ll be shooting wedding number 10, in just about two weeks) until God showed me that this gift came from him. I believe He gave me this gift, to bless others with my ability of being able to capture the beauty within each client, which they did not even know they possessed. To answer your question, it has been a Blessed, Joyful and Exciting journey as a woman entrepreneur. Sherrell: When someone walks into your office for a photo session, what’s the first thing you notice about them that help you understand them better in results of a great turn out?

Kim: First, their level of confidence. Second, their eyes- eyes are everything to me; they really tell a story. Next, mannerisms and body language. Lastly, once we have a brief conversation, the client is able to articulate to me, what they want/ are expecting. Which helps me tell their story, through photography. Sherrell: What is your ultimate dream/goal for your business? Kim: My ultimate dream, was to simply have my work and name mentioned in a magazine, which you have just made come true. That has been a dream of mine for as long as I could remember. As far as a business goal, that is to be known as a photographer by many, for great service. Truly delivering above and beyond what my clients are expecting; and to have people say, “Yeah, I know her. Kim’s Photography in Atlanta, Georgia. Her work is amazing!”

Sherrell: What should a great photo session experience be like for a client? Kim: Joy, Fun, Liberating, Uplifting, Creative. I want my clients to leave feeling like- “I didn’t pay her enough. She made me feel so confident, and comfortable.” I like each session/ experience to be Grand!

Sherrell: What advice would you give any entrepreneur woman or one interested in starting their dream business?

Kim: The time is now! If God has given you a vision, move now! Surround yourself with the people and knowledge that can help you be great. Go for it you have to! There is no better feeling than being in business for self. Build your own brand, you deserve it, WE deserve it! Sherrell: You have a new fan lol I love your work and I can just see you going far, further than where you currently are. I’m talking national magazines, just God blowing your mind. With that being said, how has your relationship with God played a role in your success so far? Kim: Thank you Sherrell, that is a compliment, I must say. God is awesome and good all the time. He is doing some amazing things in my life, sending special people my way, people like yourself.

I am just in awe, of what He’s doing. I told someone not long ago, “It’s scary at times, the blessings are coming one after another, some days- double and triple blessings!” I love the Lord, I listen to His whisper-that gut feeling. I truly listen. I believe in His promise, I know I’m destined for greatness because of Him, I’m thankful for this gift He has given me, and I thank Him for the vision. Sherrell: Is there anything else you would like to share/leave with our audience? Kim: First, I would like to thank you for this amazing opportunity and for making my dream come true. I always like to thank anyone who has referred Kim’s Photography - that is special and I’m appreciative. To all entrepreneurs, may 2016 be your year of GREATER! Again Sherrell, thank you, and may God continue to guide and bless you.

THE PR STAR

DESTINY GOOD Are you ready to hire a Publicist? I’m excited to introduce to you this PR Star! Destiny Good is a thriving Entertainment Publicist who enjoys seeing others becoming successful. This year she says she would like to say by the end of 2016-she came, she saw and she conquered. In the interview she goes in-depth about her job as an Entertainer Publicist and gives us insight on how to know when you’re ready and need a publicist.

Destiny makes her job look so easy, but prior to getting to where she is today she had to endure. “A lot of people don’t know my Journey! From the outside looking in people think I live this perfect life and have it all together when in reality it’s the complete opposite. Throughout my journey of establishing my company I’ve experienced many losses. Stones have been thrown at me left and right; within this past year I’ve been dealing with my mother being sick with Multiple Sclerosis. My father being imprisoned, my 3 younger half sibling being put into the foster system; coping the death of my

grandfather Floyd Moss Sr. and the loss of our family business F. Moss Wrecking Company which provided for my family and so many other families over the past 40 plus years; and lastly, the loss of my childhood home, which my mother built and owned for over the past 16 years. Instead of planning my college graduation celebration in May of 2015 my family and I were planning our next move. The moment that I graduated college and decided I wasn’t working for anyone else but rather go full fledge with my own company; the devil instantly began to attack. I literally built the foundation of D.Good Publicity while sleeping on the floor of my cousin apartment. There’s been so many times that I could have given up and thrown in the towel but I always told myself, never quit and never give up.”

With all that Destiny has endured she’s now working with some of America’s top entertainers and companies in the entertainment industry, under her own company D.Good Publicity. Things are just getting started for this PR Star! Sherrell: Take us behind the scenes of an Entertainment Publicist. What is your day like at the office? Destiny: I always say no one will ever understand the field of Public Relations unless they are in it. Still till this day my family thinks I just sit at home on my computer, phone, and social media doing nothing. What they don’t see is what’s getting done behind that computer and phone. My phone stays glued to my hip because of how many emails and phone calls I receive on the daily basis for business purposes. The job of a publicist NEVER ends. When we leave the office we’re still working. Publicists are literally on call 24 hours a day, and 7 days a week. We don’t get time off for sick days or vacation; although we should but because of how essen tial and vital our position is, it just doesn’t allow for us to have off days. Considering we play such a key roles, the client’s success is literally based on me answering my phone and constantly checking my emails. If I miss a call my client may miss an opportunity. Sherrell: Can you give us a little insight on how to determine rather or not a publicist is needed?

Destiny: A Publicist is the key to a successful career, which means they are always needed. Now in the case that someone can’t afford a Publicist there’s always a way to do it yourself. Such as how to run a successful PR campaign or how to write a biography using key words and key selling points to market your brand. I will also be doing a blog on my website which covers tips on how to do it yourself. Before going the route of hiring a publicist you always want to make sure you are prepared with your product in place. Other wise you will be wasting your money or spending extra unnecessary money.

Sherrell:

For our readers that are interested in being a publicist, what advice can you give them? Destiny: 1.) Get a Mentor, 2.) Study the field, 3.) Know the field 4.) Network as much as possible 5.) Use your available resources 6.) Read 7.) Become A Good Writer 8.) Be Patient Sherrell: What is rewarding about being in the public relations field? Destiny: The most rewarding thing about Public Relations is exceeding beyond limited expectations by helping others pursue their dreams, and seeing how happy my clients are when the job is completed. Most importantly, what I also find to be most rewarding is the ability to bring my client’s vision to life, w hile seeing my hard work flourish into something greater than I could even imagine.

PROMOTING PURPOSE WOMEN

26

I’ve always been hard on myself when it comes to delivering but sometimes I just have to stop and give myself a pat on the back because of how great the results are. Sherrell: Please enlighten those who feel as though PR’s are supposed to make them stars overnight. What are the factors that determine the individual outcome and timeframe of outcomes? Destiny: First and foremost the individual product or brand itself. What are you selling? If you’re an artist, how great is your music? How great can you sing, act, or dance? Success is never an overnight thing; it takes hard work, dedication and determination.

In order to succeed everyone needs a strong team behind him or her. You can’t set a time frame for something such as fame or success but if you put in enough work you’ll eventually get the result you’re looking for. In closing I would like to tell my fellow entrepreneurs to never settle and never quit. If you have a vision, if you have a goal, if you have a purpose don’t be afraid to pursue it.

M Monica Carter

Never underestimate a woman that’s on a mission to solely walk in her purpose, especially one who has endured a lot yet refuses to give up. If you ask Monica Carter what makes her so determined and strong-willed she’ll tell you it’s the vision God has given her, the purpose for her life in which she understands is to bless others. “I get excited about the unknown. If God had shown me my entire future, I would have said I’ll pass it to someone else, but not knowing what’s ahead gets me excited every day. I know that sounds weird, but just to know my Lord and savior has my back, makes me strong-willed and so determined to fulfill my purpose. I know God is real, and therefore I know I’m on the right track. The roads may have been bumpy at times, but each day gets me closer to fulfilling Gods’ plans for my life.” Monica says. The four words that best describe Monica would be Persevering, Giving, Empowering and Tenacious.

Monica is a published author of Celibate Fabulous & Fearless, a real estate professional and just recently launched a long time dream/passion to become a fashion designer. “My line is called Monica Carter Couture (www.monicacartercouture.com). We launched with some exclusive tops to show usage to the U.S. Government for my trademark completion. The first phase of my line will be Couture dresses, not just for the size 4 woman, but for the full-figured woman as well. The vision God has given me, will be much bigger than Couture dresses. Portion of my proceeds will be donated to women shelters, organizations such as, Cancer Societies. I want everyone woman, no matter your size to feel, look and be fabulous inside and out! When you look good, it builds your confidence. My tag line for my fashion line is; “Pink On High With A Purpose.” Pink is my favorite color, On High is my faith in God and my Purpose is empowering women.” She says. For the ladies who are out there following Monica on social media or even admire her from a distance, she wanted to encourage them on moving forward and pursuing their own dreams. “Often times we worry about our resources and how are we going to accomplish what God has set out for us to do or what we think we should be doing. Well, once you have accepted Christ, he said you can do all things. It may not happen on your time table, but God already has a set time and date for you to fulfill your purpose.

Monica Carter Once you know this, you create a plan to take steps toward your dreams. The goal is to never give up and don’t allow discouragement to enter into your thoughts. Surround yourself with people who can give you knowledge and guidance on what steps to take. Not to worry, God will place the right people in your path and connect you with everything you need. It will take hard work, dedication, tenacity and patience to accomplish anything in life.” She continues.

“You never want to compromise

who you are personally, to gain professionally. Knowing your value and self-worth is key to your success. You will run into many sharks with money who will try to entice you to compromise your values, however, you have to trust that God will provide you with all the resources you need. Even if you compromised your values for monetary gain, you will never rest inside and you will always be that person’s puppet. Allow God to get the glory, not anyone else.” Carter says.
