GOT WEDDING ? WE GOT YOU COVERED.
Here are some frequently asked questions that start to give you an idea of the infinite possibilities Puerto Rico offers for your big day.
Is it easy to get married in Puerto Rico?
Are religious ceremonies required?
Tying the knot in Puerto Rico is now easier than ever! You’ll be issued a marriage license within hours of your visit to the Demographic Registry, the island’s marriage license bureau. After the wedding ceremony you can request a copy of the marriage certificate online.
No, but if you decide to have one, then a civil ceremony with a judge is not necessary.
Can I get all the services for my wedding that I could get back home? We have professional wedding planners, outstanding caterers, world-class photographers, great florists and internationally known dress designers. Search weddingwire.com or the local bodaclickpr. com (in Spanish) for more information. Also, many of the island’s wedding planners have their own websites.
Can I bring my own officiant? Yes, but a locally licensed officiant must be present as a witness to the wedding ceremony in order for the marriage to be legal under Puerto Rico law.

Do I need to see a physician who is a resident practitioner in Puerto Rico for the medical certification? No, as long as you meet the required medical test for marriage at you place of residence, you do not have to see a local physician.
Can I get married on the beach in Puerto Rico? Yes, you can! You can have your dream wedding at the beach with a permit from the Department of Natural Resources. Your hotel or wedding planner will help you obtain this permit, for which a fee applies.
REQUIRED DOCUMENTATION Before you arrive in Puerto Rico, be sure to have all these documents which you will submit at the Demographic Registry. Medical Certificate Each of you must provide a medical certificate that shows you have complied with tests required for marriage in your place of residence. Be aware that this certification is only valid for ten (10) days from the date of issuance. After ten days, you would have to get a new certificate in order to get married.
Residency Requirements
Internal Revenue Stamp Purchase an Internal Revenue stamp at the Treasury Department office. This will be affixed to the license to authenticate the document. Once the proper documents are submitted at the Demographic Registry and revised for compliance by the registrar, the marriage certificate will be issued and signed. It’s very important you bring the license to the wedding ceremony! The officiant at the wedding must deliver the certificate, marriage license and all other documents to the Demographic Registry of the municipality where the ceremony took place no more than 10 days after the marriage. Within two weeks of filing, the couple will be issued the marriage certificate.
There are no residency requirements in order to be married in Puerto Rico but non-residents must submit an affidavit or sworn statement that the sole purpose of their visit is to get married. Non-U.S. citizens must include in this affidavit that they will not be staying in Puerto Rico longer than established in the visa or federal entrance permit to U.S. territory. If the affidavit is not written by a lawyer, it must be accompanied by the certificate of the County Clerk of the state to certify that she/he is qualified to notarize documents in your state and have the embossed seal. If it is issued in a foreign country, it must be accompanied by the Apostille seal.
KEEP IN MIND THAT A WEDDING COORDINATOR CAN MAKE ALL THESE ARRANGEMENTS.
Photo ID
1. Go online to www.pr.gov to order a copy of your marriage certificate. Instructions are available in English and Spanish. There is a small fee payable with a credit card.
Although passports are not required for U.S. citizens traveling to Puerto Rico, the bride and groom need a valid photo ID, which can be a passport, state-issued ID, a visa, or green card.
Birth Certificate In order to record your official name, be sure to bring originals of both birth certificates.
Other Documents If you are divorced or widowed, an original of the corresponding official documents is necessary.
RECEIVING YOUR MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE Generally, within ten days of the officiant having submitted all the documents required, your marriage certificate will be available. Below are several options to get your marriage certificate. Choose the one that is easiest for you.
2. Write an authorization letter giving permission to an individual (your wedding planner, the officiant) to pick up the marriage certificate and mail it to you. A copy of both of your photo IDs must accompany this letter. 3. Order your marriage certificate through www.vitalchek.com. There is a fee for this service.
