ontario hands out its 2016 Polanyi prizes

The province of Ontario recently announced the winners of its 2016 John Charles Polanyi Prizes. The awards recognize up and coming researchers in the fields of physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, literature and economic science.

This year’s winners are: Dr. Stephen Newman, Dr. César Sosa-Padilla, Dr. Daniel Wright, Dr. John Antoniadis, and Dr. Kyle Biggar.

The awards are given every year to five researchers who are in the early stages of their careers and pursuing post-doctoral research at an Ontario university. Recipients are considered the province’s next generation of star innovators. A panel directed by the executive heads of the Council of Ontario Universities selected the prize recipients from a collection of nominees.

This year’s scientific winners are working on diverse bodies of research, including curing breast cancer and developing new, ‘green’ chemical reactions and processes. Taking home the chemistry prize was Dr. Stephen Newman, an assistant professor and Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in the Department of Chemistry and Biomolecular Sciences at the University of Ottawa. Dr. Newman’s research uses modern technology to enable environmentally safe preparation of pharmaceuticals, materials and bulk chemicals. This year’s physics winner is Dr. John Antoniadis, a Dunlap Fellow at the Dunlap Institute for Astronomy and Astrophysics at the University of Toronto. Dr. Antoniadis’ research project combines theory with practical observations to better understand the properties and diversity of neutron stars, which orbit other stars. Taking top honours in the Physiology/ Medicine category is Dr. Kyle Biggar, an assistant professor at the Institute of Biochemistry at Carleton University. Dr. Biggar’s research focuses on the resistance of breast cancer to chemotherapy, specifically the oxygen supply in tumors, which plays a significant role in cancer progression, aggressiveness and resistance to chemotherapy.

Ontario established the Polanyi Prizes in 1987 to honour the achievement of John Charles Polanyi, a 1986 Nobel Prize Laureate in chemistry. Dr. Polanyi won his Nobel Prize 30 years ago.
