In March of 2020, our world was interrupted by the global pandemic and live music was forced into silence. At ProMusica, we made it our mission to try and find a way for music to be played and heard. There were many moments of not knowing how to move forward. Now, a year later, one thing is very clear – and that is while trying to survive, creativity came alive. Every creative muscle has been flexed to bring music to audiences near and far. From our digital concerts reaching viewers from across the globe, to experiencing music live and in person – we have done a lot of things differently this year! It is with great delight to close our 2020-21 Season of Festivals with a hybrid combination of live, in-person performances alongside new digital programs to enjoy from home. We are grateful to so many for helping ProMusica set a new kind of stage for this season. Thank you to Together & Company for allowing their exclusive venue at The Fives to become our musical home this year. To our Music Director David Danzmayr, Creative Partner Vadim Gluzman, the ProMusica Board of Trustees, and our musicians, volunteers and dedicated administrative team – you have bravely leaned into this adventurous year, embracing each challenge and remaining resilient and imaginative. Thank you. Finally, to you – our ProMusica friends and family – your support and generosity has never been more important. Janet Chen
Born in America and raised in Taiwan, Janet Chen has led an active and diverse career as a performing musician, arts administrator, and music educator. She holds a bachelor's degree from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music and a master's degree in flute performance from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. She completed the Executive Program for Nonprofit Leaders in the Arts — a joint program of the Stanford Graduate School of Business and National Arts Strategies; and also participated in the Executive Fellowship Program with the Jefferson Center Academy for Leadership and Governance. In 2018, Janet was one of ten members representing Columbus at the Young American Leaders Program at the Harvard Business School. She was selected as one of Columbus Business First’s “Forty Under 40” and one of “19 Non-profit Innovators” by CityPulse Columbus. Janet has been featured in Columbus CEO Magazine, The Columbus Dispatch, and is a featured artist as part of Columbus, Ohio’s “Art Makes Columbus” marketing campaign. In 2018, she was named a YWCA Columbus Woman of Achievement and honored by Columbus Business First as one of the “Most Admired Executives in Central Ohio.” Janet serves on the Board of the Columbus Music Commission and is a member of the Columbus Cultural Leadership Consortium. Prior to joining ProMusica, Janet served as Assistant Principal Flute with the Taipei Symphony Orchestra in Taipei, Taiwan and appeared as guest soloist several times. Janet spent two summers as a flute instructor at the Interlochen Center for the Arts in Michigan, where she coached and taught students who attended the Interlochen Summer Arts Camp. 20/21 SEASON

To deliver a world-class chamber
About the Orchestra ProMusica and our 37 musicians are redefining what it means to be a chamber orchestra. For four decades, ProMusica’s programs have honored the classics and celebrated the contemporary through world-class performances and creative approaches to musical storytelling. Led by Music Director David Danzmayr and Creative Partner Vadim Gluzman, renowned violinist, the orchestra reaches a broad audience across the city—as the resident orchestra at the intimate Southern Theatre in downtown Columbus, and at notable venues beyond the I-270 outer belt. In 2017, ProMusica made its Chicago debut performing for a sold-out crowd at the North Shore Chamber Music Festival. We embrace an array of eras and influences—as masters of classical works, champions of bold new commissions and innovators of crossover collaborations, ProMusica’s performances are time-tested and modern, presented in ways that few orchestras can. We are widely recognized as

orchestra experience through: Innovative programming, Audience intimacy, Exceptional talent & Artistic excellence
a national leader in promoting contemporary repertoire— with 68 commissions and more than 120 world and regional premieres by composers including Pulitzer Prize winners Kevin Puts and Aaron Jay Kernis, Gabriela Montero, Michael Daugherty, Lera Auerbach, Conrad Tao and Joshua Roman. In addition, ProMusica has an active recording program with 13 CDs released to date. This is a testament to the world-class musicians on stage who thrive on artistic exploration and risk-taking—performing with the highest skill, emotion and humanity for our audiences. Deeply rooted in our city’s cultural fabric, ProMusica’s community outreach programs impact approximately 17,000 lives each season. Musicians travel to local schools, senior citizens attend live rehearsals, and underserved youth are given life-changing opportunities with the power of music. Programs such as “Play Us Forward” offer an integrated, in-school curriculum, while family concerts at Columbus Metropolitan Library branches provide arts access in nurturing neighborhood environments. “Coda: Post-Concert Conversations” give the opportunity for a direct dialogue between audiences and guest artists— deepening engagement with the music and performers. Our annual Summer Music Series at Franklin Park Conservatory & Botanical Gardens is free and open to the public, demonstrating our unwavering commitment to offer accessible and transformative performances to all residents in our community. ProMusica is a truly personal arts experience, one that’s full of surprise and delight and belonging. ProMusica is more than an orchestra. It’s a movement. The Elizabeth M. Ross Music Director
David Danzmayr David Danzmayr joined ProMusica as Music Director in 2013. Widely regarded as one of the most talented and exciting European conductors of his generation, David served as the Chief Conductor of the Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra, continuing to hold the role of Honorary Conductor, and has quickly become a sought-after guest conductor for orchestras around the globe. Previously, he served as Music Director of the Illinois Philharmonic Orchestra in Chicago, where he was lauded regularly by both the Chicago Tribune and Chicago Classical Review for the performances. David has won prizes at some of the world´s most prestigious conducting competitions including a 2nd prize at the International Gustav Mahler Conducting Competition and prizes at the International Malko Conducting Competition. For his extraordinary success he has been awarded the Bernhard Paumgartner Medal by the Internationale Stiftung Mozarteum. David received his musical training at the University Mozarteum in Salzburg where, after initially studying piano, he went on to study conducting in the class of Dennis Russell Davies. He finished his studies with the highest honors. In February 2021, David was announced as the new Music Director of the Oregon Symphony.

Vadim Gluzman Universally recognized among today’s top performing artists, Vadim Gluzman brings to life the glorious violinistic tradition of the 19th and 20th centuries. Gluzman’s wide repertoire embraces new music and his performances are heard around the world through live broadcasts and a striking catalogue of award-winning recordings exclusively for the BIS label. The Israeli violinist has appeared with the Berlin Philharmonic, Boston Symphony, Orchestre de Paris, Leipzig Gewandhaus, Israel Philharmonic, London Symphony, Royal Concertgebouw and many others. He collaborates with leading conductors including Riccardo Chailly, Christoph von Dohnányi, Tugan Sokhiev, Sir Andrew Davis, Neeme Järvi, Michael Tilson Thomas, Semyon Bychkov and Hannu Lintu. Festival appearances include performances at Ravinia, Tanglewood, Verbier, and the North Shore Chamber Music Festival in Chicago, founded by Gluzman and pianist Angela Yoffe, his wife and recital partner. Distinguished Artist in Residence at the Peabody Conservatory, Gluzman performs on the legendary 1690 ‘ex-Leopold Auer’ Stradivari, on extended loan to him through the generosity of the Stradivari Society of Chicago.

Martha Guth Soprano Martha Guth brings consummate musicianship and a distinctive tonal palette to a wide range of musical periods and styles. A much-sought-after concert soloist, her repertoire includes soprano 1 in Mozart’s C Minor Mass (New York’s Sacred Music in a Sacred Space in St. Ignatius Loyola Cathedral and Columbus, Ohio’s ProMusica Chamber Orchestra), Orff’s Carmina Burana (West Michigan, Mobile, Lima Symphonies, Florida Orchestra), the Brahms Requiem (Washington, D.C.’s Cathedral Choral Society, New York’s Voices of Ascension, Grand Rapids’ Calvin College), Britten’s Spring Symphony (Choral Society of Durham), Händel’s Messiah (Santa Fe Symphony, Rhode Island Philharmonic, Christ Church Cathedral in Lexington, Kentucky), Mendelssohn’s Elijah (Columbus Symphony and Gloriae Dei Cantores), Mahler’s Second Symphony (Evansville Philharmonic) and Fourth Symphony (Flagstaff Symphony) , Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony (Fort Wayne Philharmonic) and Missa solemnis (Bachakademie Stuttgart, Toledo Symphony), Mozart’s Exsultate, jubilate (Hamilton Philharmonic) and Concert Arias (Germany’s Bad Reichenhaller Philharmonie), Berlioz’s Les nuits d’été (Canadian Opera Company orchestra), Haydn’s Die Schöpfung (New Mexico Symphony) and Poulenc’s Stabat Mater (Spokane Symphony). A persuasive actress, Ms. Guth has performed Frau Fluth in the Boston Midsummer Opera’s production of Nicolai’s The Merry Wives of Windsor, Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro (Countess) and Don Giovanni (Donna Anna) at Opera Lyra Ottawa; the same

composer’s Die Zauberflöte (Pamina) and Die Entführungaus dem Serail (Konstanze) in Göggingen, Germany; the title role of Händel’s Alcina in Lucca, Italy; Lauretta in Bizet’s Dr. Miracle and Norina in Don Pasquale with the Santa Fe Opera (the latter on tour as a past apprentice of the company), and Alyce in Tom Cipullo’s Glory Denied at New York’s Chelsea Opera, which she reprised in the 2015-16 season. She has also performed with the opera companies of Graz (Austria) and Palma de Mallorca (Spain). A model collaborator, Ms. Guth has earned special distinction for her passionate devotion to recital and chamber repertoire, earning First Prize at the 2007 Wigmore Hall International Song Competition in London. She has given recitals at London’s Wigmore Hall and Leeds Lieder Festival with pianist Graham Johnson; in New York with Dalton Baldwin and Malcolm Martineau, and at both the Vancouver International Song Institute and Ottawa International Chamber Music Festival with Erika Switzer. Together with Ms. Switzer she is CoDirector of Sparks & Wiry Cries, a global platform for art song, encompassing publication, performance and the commissioning of new works. Sparks is the force behind the popular songSLAMs presented in partnership with regional arts and academic institutions the world over, and every January presents its own songSLAM Festival weekend in New York City. Ms. Guth resides in Ithaca, NY where she is Assistant Professor of Voice at Ithaca College. In addition she is on the artistic administrative team and faculty at Songfest in Los Angeles, and in summer 2021 joins the faculty at the Vocal Academy for the Collaborative Piano Institute at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. Her recitals have been broadcast on the CBC Radio/Radio Canada, BBC Radio (U.K.) and WDR (Germany). Recordings include a solo disc of Schubert songs with fortepianist Penelope Crawford, John Fritz-Roger’s Magna Mysteria on the Innova label, Brahms’ Liebeslieder Waltzes and The Five Borough Song Book. Her recording of Roberto Sierra's Beyond the Silence of Sorrow with the Puerto Rico Symphony was nominated for a 2016 Latin Grammy; Summer Night (songs of Healy Willan, Canadian Art Song Project with collaborators Peter Barrett, Allyson McHardy and Helen Becqué) was nominated for a 2020 Juno Award.
