BROTHERS.

INJUSTICE AND GLORY Fate scatters Dovbush brothers in different directions. Oleksa finds himself in a foreign war, and Ivan gathers the rebel squad and begins robbing merchants on the Carpathian trails. Their roads converge again when Oleksa escapes from the threat of imminent death, when he fled from prison. Ivan is motivated by a desire to enrich himself. Oleksa becomes a rebel because of his fervent desire to revenge the

death of his parents, who were killed by the soldiers of Colonel Psheluskiy. Eventually, Oleksa’s focus shiſts from the payback for his loss to something else. He sees the suffering of ordinary people and wants to protect them with all of his heart. The two brothers together are a great power, but the difference in their views is the cause of the conflict, that will set them apart forever.

BASED ON REAL EVENTS Beginning of the 18th century—time of brutal oppression of the peasantry in Hutsul region. The Carpathians groan under the yoke of burdensome taxes. Duchess Yablonovska and Master Zolotnitskiy introduce more new extortions on the land that has always been considered public. Their desire for profit and greed have no limits. Yablonovska and Zolotnitskiy try to use glory and fear of rebels in their favor, in order to cheaply buy the land of intimidated noblemen. Colonel Psheluskiy, a heir of a bankrupt family, tries to destroy rebels with the force of his squad, but Oleksa Dovbush breaks all of his plans.

Pechenizhyn village is not only known as being the birthplace of Oleksa Dovbush in 1700, but also as the place of the first industrial oil fields in Europe since 1725. Oil was used for commercial purposes. Medicine and candles were produced from oil products. Oil craſt back then used to be a hard labor, due to primitive pit mining method being extremely dangerous. All of this will play important role in the film.

LOCATIONS The action of the ďŹ lm takes place in The Carpathian Mountains, in the early 18th century.

Unique natural locations were selected for the shoot, as well as the real places where Oleksa Dovbush was active throughout his legendary life. These landscapes, primeval forests and untouched rocks and ravines carry the power and magic of a truly wild nature.
