Director’s Corner We have reached that time of year when the kids are back in school, football season is in high gear, and we begin to marvel at how quickly the holiday season is approaching. Parents around the country go through their weekday morning rituals with their kids: wake them up, feed them breakfast, pack their lunches and backpacks, and send them out the door. Sounds familiar, right? Not flashy or exciting, just consistent. Unfortunately, nutritional consistency is what many children in our community lack. A recent study by Share Our Strength determined that 3 in 5 children go to school hungry. This results in a lack of concentration at school, which leads to physical, mental and intellectual problems. All parents want their children to succeed, but without a nutritious breakfast these students lack a vital element for their future success. Loaves & Fishes provided 6,065 school-aged children with supplementary breakfast foods last fiscal year. These are children within our community —your children’s peers, your neighbors’ children, your children. Sometimes we tend to separate ourselves from the people we are helping, but it is important to remember that these are members of our community in need. When looking at our Impact Sheet (on the opposite page), you may find it remarkable to see how many people we helped during the last fiscal year. Your support makes the success of our mission possible. You are our strength, and you demonstrate how the power of community can change lives positively for many thousands of people. I am happy to share that we have some new additions to the Loaves & Fishes team. We welcome Megan Selck to our staff and Tom Kallay, Chris Michalski, Tom McGough, Tom Winters and Kevin Burns to our Board of Directors. We are excited to collaborate and learn alongside them in order to end hunger in our community. I hope to see you all at Soup’s On! on Sunday, October 21st!

If it weren’t for the food I received today:* …my family and myself would not have enough food to make it through the week. If it weren’t for programs like this we would really struggle. Karen, Warrenville …my family would not be able to eat for the rest of the month. The stamps we receive from the state is not hardly enough. Please help us! Bonnie, Naperville …I’m glad to receive food because if it wasn’t for Loaves & Fishes I don’t know what I would be eating. So I thank them so much. May God bless them always. Sylvia, Naperville …I would have to use money that otherwise pays bills. This food helps me pay my bills and be able to have food for my children. A.J., Naperville …I would be without things that I can’t afford to purchase and not have enough food to feed my family. I got injured at work and they terminated me. So what a good thing that we have a good pantry to help all in need. Thank you very much. Karen, Naperville …I would be hungrier. It has been very helpful. I am VERY thankful. Praise the Lord. Caesar …My table would be empty and my cupboards bare. Thank you. Nancy, Wheaton …I would not be able to pay my monthly energy bills or pay for gas to get to work. Bruce, Aurora …I wouldn’t be eating tomorrow. …my family and I would not have meat to eat. We would not be able to wash clothing, or have bathroom essentials. This food pantry has been a god-send to my family and myself during these times of difficulty and unemployment. Thank you! Vickie, Warrenville *These responses were from an August 2012 client survey.

…with my being a diabetic I would be in a very serious situation as I am also on disability and can’t afford food at the moment. Alan, Naperville …wouldn’t have enough to feed my children!!! Linda, Naperville …I would have only canned fruit and vegetables to feed my family of four. Karen, Villa Park …I would have to spend gas money on food. Its hard to pay electric and gas and rent. All help is appreciated. Deb, Naperville …my children and I would have to go to bed hungry-again. Thank you! Olivia, Naperville … It would be harder to pay other bills. In today’s economy, we are very grateful for programs like this. Thank you very much! Walker, Naperville …Thank you Loaves & Fishes I would not be able to feed my two children. The power went out and I lost all the refrigerator foods. I am able to feed my children each day and snacks for school. Please stay open to help families like mine to meet their needs. Thank you! Pat, Naperville …I would be in a worse financial situation than I am already in. Being unemployed for two years, its organizations like this that keep families fed and together. RJ, Bensenville …I would not be able to eat food myself normally until next week because what little I have I save is for my son. G.H., Glen Ellyn …I don’t know how my family and I would make it! I get paid biweekly and with the monthly bills and rent I don’t have enough for food. So I’m very glad to know Loaves & Fishes it helps me know that God is real. Carolyn, Lisle

SOUP’S ON! Mark your calendars for Soup’s On!, one of the most important events of the year for Loaves & Fishes. This special event will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Tellabs atrium (corner of Diehl and Raymond). Rotary Club of Naperville members plan and host this family-favorite event showcasing local food and entertainment that aids three charities, including Loaves & Fishes, which work to end hunger and homelessness in our community. The $45,000 in funding received last year helped us to meet record need. Food and activities will delight every member of the family. Highlights include supervised DuPage Children’s Museum exhibits, as well as musical performances by students from Districts 203 and 204 and Benet Academy. A wide array of sports memorabilia and gift baskets are featured in the Silent Auction. However, the highlight of Soup’s On! is first and foremost the food. While delicious soups, stews, and chowders are expected, 30 stations will also offer BBQ entrees, signature sandwiches, artisan cheeses, specialty breads,

and delectable desserts. Returning favorites such as Catch 35, Sullivan’s, and Maggiano’s Little Italy will be joined by several first-time vendors, including Kuma’s Asian Bistro and Braconi’s Italian Restaurant. Each ticket includes unlimited food, desserts, and soft drinks; beer and wine are available at the cash bar. Adults also receive a collectible Soup’s On! soup mug and souvenir cookbook as bonuses with each admission, while supplies last. Until September 28th, adult tickets will cost $40 ($45 after). Other rates are $35 for seniors (65+) and military, $10 for children 6-12, and free for children 5 and under. Mail or bring the order form on the back page to Loaves & Fishes.
