hoosing a window treatment can be a scary proposition – not only will the style and fabric you choose help set the tone for the decor of your room, but you’ll be spending a fair amount of money. “We talk to women all the time who have put off buying drapes or other window treatments for years because they were afraid to make the commitment for one reason or the other,” says Sue Sampson.“But once they have window treatments installed, they all say they wish they had done it sooner.” One way to trim the cost of window treatments is to sew them
yourself. That’s how Sampson and her partner Ellen DeLucia started out. They’re friends and neighbors who share a passion for home decorating and sewing. They create affordable custom window treatments through their Internet site, and they also use their experience and expertise to make home decorating patterns for McCall’s. Sampson and DeLucia say there’s no reason home sewers should be afraid of making their own window treatments. “You’re basically fitting a box,” says DeLucia. “There’s not a lot of fancy sewing required, and little mistakes are

forgiven very easily.” Having the right equipment will make any sewing project easier, and making window treatments is no exception. “You’ll need a sturdy sewing machine that can sew through many layers,” notes Sampson. “A serger is also a great investment,” she says. “We couldn’t live without our Bernina serger in our custom window treatment business,” she adds. A serger makes the job quicker and easier by sewing the seam and finishing it at the same time. Choose a serger based on your experience level and the amount of sewing you plan to do. Bernina offers a variety of models with various features to fit different needs and help you achieve a professional looking finished project. You’ll also want to set up a work area. Because some of the pieces you’ll be working on will be quite large, you’ll need a big ironing surface. You can improvise, using a desk, dining room table or even a ping pong table covered with several layers of towels. You’ll also need a good steam iron. A visit to your local fabric store will provide inspiration in the form of patterns and fabric. If you’re wondering what’s popular right now in window treatments, Sampson and DeLucia say they see a trend toward drapery panels as well as an increase in the popularity of Roman shades, or even a combination of the two. Today, home sewers have increasing access to wonderful trims that give window treatments that designer look. “There are beautiful trims now in stores at more affordable prices that home sewers can add to their projects, or even use to give a more custom look to ready-made draperies,” says Sampson. Home stores also stock a great variety of hardware options, which can add drama to the look of a window treatment. Here are some tips from Sampson and DeLucia for creating custom window treatments at home: * Make sure the pattern you use has all the information you’ll need, and read through it before you start. * Use quilters’ pins instead of regular straight pins for your project. “You’ll be pinning through several layers of fabric, and regular pins just won’t cut it,” says DeLucia. * Before you start sewing, mark your pieces “T” for top, “R” for right side. “Some fabrics look very similar on the right side and wrong side; you don’t want to find out when you’re done with your drapes that they don’t match,” says Sampson. * Dental floss is great for gathering large pieces of fabric. * A 4-foot ruler will come in handy – it is long enough to go across the width of the curtain. * Sew with a friend. “You can do your curtains and then it’s your friend’s turn to get help making her curtains,” says Sampson.

unning Out of Storage Space? A Solution that Goes Beyond Closets and Drawers - If you are like most people, you’re probably close to, or have already run out of room to store “stuff” in your house. The china cabinet and drawers are full, the closets are jam-packed, and you have so many boxes in the garage, they are touching the ceiling. Good thing the latest trend in home decorating is to become more creative with how you use space - and your home has more of it than you may think. Today’s closets aren’t any bigger, but thanks to closet organizers, you can store stuff more efficiently. Built-in shelves and soap dishes are making storage in the bathroom easier; while built-in appliance garages and storage nooks are doing wonders for the kitchen. Now you can get a complimentary “customized” look in other rooms in your house without knocking down walls. Just install a recessed cabinet. “The great thing about a cabinet that recesses into the wall is that it can give you a built-in custom look without the custom price, and it opens up space you never thought you had,” says Kevin Shaha, president of Racor, Incorporated, a Sandpoint, Idaho company that specializes in storage solutions. Racor just introduced an entire line of recessed cabinets after analyzing research that showed do-it-yourselfers want them. There are five different cabinet styles available in the “Nooks Space Creators” line: a four-shelf cabinet that comes with or without a door; a tall cabinet that also has four shelves and a tilt-out drawer; a mail and key cabinet; and a CD cabinet. While they vary in height and style, they are all 19.5 inches wide and 5.75 inches deep with the recessed portion of the cabinet measuring slightly less than 14.5 inches wide for an exact fit between the studs used in standard home construction. “These cabinets can either be recessed into the wall to give the room they’re in a complete custom look, or surface mounted on the wall like a picture frame. It all depends on what the home owner is most comfortable doing,” says Shaha. “We include a template that makes cutting a hole in the wall easy and accurate, instructions on how to determine what might be behind in your walls prior to cutting and all the hardware necessary to surface mount the cabinet if desired.” The cabinets are available in a white finish that can either be left alone, or painted to stand out as a true decorative piece. Shaha says the tall and four-shelf cabinets tend to end up in bedrooms, family rooms and living rooms; places people want to display collections like golf balls, glasses, action figures or stuffed animals. The most popular places for the mail and key cabinets to go up are in kitchens, dens, or right by the door leading out to the garage. The CD cabinets typically go up in family rooms, bedrooms and dens. “Recessed cabinets are perfect for any place in the house where you need additional storage space. We’ve even seen people install them in kids’ bedrooms, low to the ground, to serve as bookshelves,” says Shaha. Some other popular storage trends in kids’ rooms these days, using decorative benches that double as storage boxes; using plastic bins that easily slide into a free-standing storage unit; and giving the child his or her own hamper to store dirty clothes in.

as being cooped up inside all winter given you the itch to renovate, renew or expand your home? Spring is the perfect time to start home improvement projects and interest rates make home equity loans attractive, but don’t commit to anything until you’ve done a little “homework” first. A home improvement project can add value to your house; however, some improvements pay off more than others. Before you decide how much to spend and what part of your house to spend it on, keep a few facts in mind. Remodeling your kitchen can add up to 150 percent of the cost of the project to your home’s resale value. Adding a second bathroom increases your resale value by 90 percent of the project cost, and a room addition, such as a family room or an extra bedroom, provides a 60 to 80 percent return. Other improvements, such as new windows and doors or replacing the heating system, may be practical but they necessarily translate into resale profits. Of course, your decision won’t be based solely on the payback. In addition to resale value, you should take into account your family’s quality of living.” Once you decide on the scope of your project, get bids from several contractors so you can compare prices and services. With these bids in hand, you’ll have a better idea of how much money you’ll need. But be realistic -- don’t let that vision of your dream kitchen get in the way of common sense. Figure out how much debt you can take on, and plan accordingly. If your budget doesn’t allow for a complete kitchen remodel, perhaps you can replace your cabinets or countertops now and put off the new appliances until next year. Home equity loans are a great tool for financing a home improvement project. Because the loan is secured by your home, it will likely have a lower annual percentage rate, and in many states, you may gain some tax breaks on interest. With a home equity loan, the amount you can borrow is limited by the equity you have accumulated in your home. You can calculate your equity by subtracting the unpaid balance of your mortgage from the fair market value of your home. Other factors may also influence the amount you can borrow, such as your credit history, income and current financial responsibilities. Make sure all the information on your credit report is accurate. “If you notice anything questionable, such as accounts you don’t recognize, or payment disputes, deal with those issues before applying for a home equity loan,” says Sweet. Sweet offers these tips about shopping for a home equity loan: * Make sure all costs, fees, terms and charges

are disclosed, including any penalties for early repayment. * Find out the variances to your interest rate, if applicable, including the “cap,” or ceiling, and the amount of the margin. * Look into all conditions that may apply to your credit line, such as a minimum amount per withdrawal. * Find out your repayment options. * Remember, your house is being used as collateral, so be certain you are able to make your payments on time, or you risk losing your home. Once your loan is arranged, make a final decision on a contractor for your project. Ask around among friends, neighbors and co-workers for recommendations. If you don’t know anyone who has used your contractor, be sure to ask them for client references – and check them out. Your lender may be familiar with the contractors you’re considering, and you can ask building product distributors or wholesale suppliers to see what other professionals have to say. And remember, every home improvement project seems to take longer than anticipated, so go into it with an open mind and flexible attitude. Here are a few considerations to remember when enhancing your outdoor living space with a trellis, and resources where to receive free trellis information brochures: Site Selection Consider attaching the trellis to your home, using it to shelter a path between the main house and an outbuilding, or simply frame the view of another landscape feature. Remember, one of the greatest appeals of a trellis is its architecture – so make sure the site and size you choose is appropriate for its surroundings. Layout: Take special care when deciding the proportions of foundational posts and overhead canopy. For instance, a set of 4-inch by 4-inch posts would be ideal with 2-inch by 6- inch overhead boards. Construction Tips Prior to digging your postholes, remove all rocks, plants or sod that inhabit the area. These items can be strategically
added or relocated after the trellis has been built. Also, it’s paramount the posts be put solidly into the ground or secured to concrete footings. If you choose to put the post into the ground, the portion of the post that will below the ground should be treated with a preservative. Regardless whether you build or buy the concrete footings, the foundational posts must be level and true for the trellis to look correct. And be certain your posts are long enough to provide enough headroom once they are entered into place. Once the posts are in place, consider adding 2-inch x 12-inch x 12-inch square cedar post caps on top of each post. These post caps ensure the posts can handle the weight of the overhead canopy boards by dispersing the load more evenly, and it provides a nice finishing touch to the structure. However, you’re using Western Red Cedar to construct the trellis canopy, which is lightweight and has a fine, consistent grain making it easy to work with. Decorative Touches Consider adding decorative touches to all canopy board ends. To create a decorative end, perfect your design on construction paper then use it as a template to transfer your design to each board end. Cut, and then sand the edges to create a smooth finish. Be systematic and symmetric in applying this decorative design to each canopy board. The possibilities are endless here, but choosing decorative flair to complement both the surroundings and the architectural feel of your house will add to the appeal. As you’ll see, trellises can give any backyard some classical character as well as seasonal charm. A trellis can make a dramatic change to your outdoor living areas, and better yet, you can build it in just one weekend. The Western Red Cedar Lumber Association (WRCLA) has developed a collection of easy-toconstruct project brochures for trellises, pergolas, benches and tables, among others. Available online or in a brochure format, this compilation of project ideas includes recommendations for creating new looks, adding to your outdoor living space, as well as tips for construction.

We are definitely living in a material world, especially when it comes to design. Materials -- wood, glass, porcelain, ceramic, concrete, stone, steel, laminate, rubber, plastic or cork -- fill our homes with color, texture and style. With more materials available to home remodelers and decorators, it’s important to understand how, when and where to use them. In design, the form and function of materials isn’t immaterial. Nowhere is this truer than in the bathroom, where everything has to work hard and last. But as the bath continues transforming from a commonplace, utilitarian space to, among other things, an athome spa, the palette of applicable materials has become more luxurious. Some materials are naturally more durable and waterresistant. Some are more slippery, and some easier to clean. Others add a splash of glamour as the belles of today’s design ball. These include classic building materials such as glass, stone and concrete, as well as man-made cast stone and terrazzo. Even metals, such as aluminum or stainless steel, particularly in matte finishes, are finding their way into bathrooms beyond traditional hardware and accessories. Glass: A Clear Design Choice for Luxury Bathrooms Many of today’s homeowners are seeking transparency and shimmer in their contemporary baths and powder rooms. This translates to the growing use of glass for basins, counters and tub surrounds, and surfaces from counters to walls to floors. Surfacemounted glass basins are widely available in many styles and colors, from the mass-produced marvel to the one-of-a-kind, handcrafted art piece. More manufacturers make glass basins that can be mounted in a number of ways. Porcher, for example, offers an array of choices for every taste and style, including the Geometrique series of clear glass, above-the-counter basins in such pure forms as a cube, circle, rectangle and cone. These basic shapes can be paired with the element of light to create a dramatic statement in the bath. In addition, homeowners can select from Porcher’s Rock Ice above-counter basins, featuring a “textured” glass exterior and smooth matte interior. Other choices range from Porcher’s Carnivale series of original, hand-crafted, patterned basins in ruby and cobalt glass to Striata, a striking fused glass design in jewel tones with striations. Glass Tile Complements Fixtures Glass tile is clearly the material of the moment, partly because contemporary style values the sense of lightness and ease. These tiles tend to play well with others, too. Not only are they easy to clean, but they also come in lots of sizes and colors that

mix happily with fixtures and other materials. Today, sea tones and watery hues, such as aqua, sea-foam and cobalt, are especially chic. Some decorators are using glass mosaic -- small, shimmering beauties that can cover large surfaces or simply accent porcelain or stone, as budget and preference dictate. Concrete Decisions: Mixing and Matching Materials Concrete, properly sealed and finished (and colored to choice), is another material that’s finding its way into bathrooms, particularly of those longing for Zen-like serenity. Concrete works well for the minimalist bath, as does marble, granite, slate or even soapstone. Fittings with clean lines, correct proportions and little ornamental detail suit this style. Silver-toned metals are preferable, whether high-polish or brushed, and whether nickel, pewter, aluminum or chrome. Combinations of wood and porcelain, or wood, porcelain, stone and metal, look just as beautiful in a concrete- or tile-lined space as they do in more traditionally finished rooms. Many manufacturers have introduced elegant designs for just this type of interior. Porcher, for example, offers the Onda suite, an Italiandesigned minimalist series that combines stainless steel with Wenge or white-finished wood. Porcher’s Japanese-inspired Kyomi suite incorporates ceramic, glass, wood, metal and marble in minimalist designs with uncommon warmth. If you want a more contemporary or decorative look, consider jazzier materials. Think glass block instead of glass mosaic tiles. Consider mixing marble, granite, onyx, agate or semiprecious materials like mother-of-pearl or abalone with porcelain or woods, including teak or mahogany. All of these are current options, or are becoming more readily available. Remember, when it comes to anything modern, you really can’t go wrong with basic black and white, regardless of what materials you use. Polished brass hardware smartly accents this style, as does chrome. In bathrooms and powder rooms, as elsewhere in the house today, anything goes. Once you’ve plumbed your personal taste, and found the right mix of materials and elements to suit your available budget, go ahead and make a visual splash.

The cultivators turn in fertilizers, root out weeds, make furrows and break up the soil, letting in vital moisture and air. These implements are authentic and highly effective. Güneşli havalarda sulama yapmak ağaca zarar vermesinin yanı sıra suyun da buharlaşıp gideceğinden bitkiye fazla bir yararı olmaz.
Ayın Ağacı Bu ay ki ağacımız Albizzia (Silk Tree). Sıcak ve kurak iklimlere çok dayanıklı bir ağaçtır. Özellikle Tropikal adalarda bu ağaca çok rastlanır. Ağaca İstanbul'dan İtalya' ya tohumunu getiren kişinin adı verilmiştir. (Albizzia) Geniş ve dağınık tepeli 8-9 metreye kadar boylanabilen yeşil bir ağaç türüdür. Tüysü yaprakları ağaca harika bir güzellik verir. Geceleri yaprakları kapanır. Çok hoş koku yayan pembe çiçeklerinin yanı sıra çiçek tozunu taşıyan flamentleri alt tarafta parlak bir görüntü oluşturur. Bu yüzden bu ağaca ipek ağacı da denir. Haziran ayında çiçeklenmeye başlar. Çiçekleri görülmeye değer. Etrafınıza bir bakarsanız bu ağacı görür görmez tanıyacaksınız.

irstly there is no such thing as a maintenance free garden. I know it is difficult for people that do not live here full time to maintain their garden themselves but all plants need watering and all gardens will need weeding, not mention the occasional pruning.
Walled gardens are often a feature, but have height limits here, so extra height and seclusion potential can be gained from railings on top and climbers. Overhead shade is a necessity - usually provided by pergolas and verandahs. Outdoor furniture is essential for relaxing. Garden ornaments are either traditional and/or rustic. Examples include terracotta olive jars, traditional statues, old stone pillars, mill stones and many other old stone artifacts that can be found in a number of suppliers around Girne.
However, there are some things that can be done to help the situation. Try to keep planting beds as small as possible, as, unfortunately all of that lovely rich fertile soil that you will have put into your garden will be beneficial to weeds as well as flowers. This will be especially true in the first season thanks to all those weed seeds that came with the soil and manure.

The predominant colours have a sun bleached look - white, or earthy shades such as terracotta and sandstone are popular, unfortunately we are limited when it comes to colours of gravel, but luckily the one colour we have has a bluish hue and therefore not too dull. I have seen monotonous grey pebbles used here and there but in addition to being quite dull and boring, their shape makes it hard to walk on as they roll under foot.

Orda burada monoton gri tonlu çakıl taşları kullanıldığını gördüm ve sıkıcı ve bunaltıcı görünümlerinin ötesinde, şekilleri yürümeyi oldukça zor hale getiriyor. Çünkü ayağınızın altında rahatlıkla kayıp yuvarlanıyor. Bazıları, mekan oluştururken bitkilerin ikincil planda olduğunu düşünüyor. Fakat ben inanıyorum ki, bitkiler de an az sert dekor zeminleri kadar önemli. Yeşil ve parlak yaz renkleri, toprak tonları ile birlikte güzelliği ortaya çıkıyor. Tipik olarak bu, bahçelerde yok. Çimenler çok fazla suya ihtiyaç duyuyorlar ve yazın da kurumamaları için özel bir bakım ve dikkat gerektiriyor. Bunun yerine, zemin ya çimento ile kaplanıyor ya da çakıl konuyor. Duvarlı bahçeler sıklıkla rastlanılan türden, fakat burada yükseklik limitleri de var. Yani ekstra
yükseklik, sarmaşıkların yetişebilmesi için olanak sağlar. Gölgelikse tam bir gereklilik. Genelde de talvar ya da balkonlar yardımıyla elde ediliyor. The foliage is very attractive with large pinnate frondy leaves which contrast well with the rich orange red flowers held in trumpet clusters during late summer and autumn. For a permanent tropical looking vine this has to be one of the best one to choose. Cobaea scandens Also known as the "Cup and Saucer Vine," is a tender native of Central and South America. The flowers start very pale greenish-white, turning to purple blue. Although a perennial it also does well as an annual climbing up most things with sticky fine tendrils. Easy from seed, Fast growing given an early start. Cryptostegia madascariensis Rubber Vine A very fast growing climber with lilac Allamanda like flowers. The tubular portion is sometimes tinged with red. Flowers are about five cm across. The irritating sap used to be harvested in India for quality latex rubber. Cobaea scandens
Ipomoea Tricolor Heavenly Blue Morning Glory The tropical relative to bind weed! But do not worry, this one can be treated as a half hardy annual. It can make rapid growth in one season given plenty of water and food and looks stunning if grown through a loose shrub or together with another climber like a climbing rose where the flowers appear after the rose has had it's main flush. These are easy to raise if you soak the hard seed for 24 hours before sowing. The trumpet shaped flowers of a vibrant sky blue colour between 4" to 5" across bloom and die each day - hence the name. Dolichos LabLab Ruby Glow Hyacinth Bean A different climber to impress your neighbours with, this climbing bean that can be grown just like a climbing french bean has the attraction of purple foliage and beautiful pea type scented lavender flowers. These are followed by outstanding purple to red shiny attractive bean pods. The beans are edible but only after repeated cooking and draining of the water so please do not try this. Easy to grow in a warm sunny position reaching a maximum of 15ft. Although a perennial again it can be treated as an annual

A Few Words of Warning Bonsai is an outdoor activity. Trees are outdoor plants, putting them into pots does not transform them into indoor plants. With very few exceptions, if you keep your bonsai indoors they will die. Make room for your collection outside. You'll be happier and your trees will be happier. What is Bonsai? Contrary to popular belief, bonsai is not the art of stunting a tree's growth. The characters for "bonsai" translate, roughly, to "pot" and "to plant." As such, bonsai is the art of growing trees in a confined space (usually a pot or a tray) to simulate certain environmental conditions such as great age, extreme weathering, twisted or contorted form, landscape, or other factors. Accordingly, bonsai are modelled on, and often take inspiration from, nature. The idea of bonsai is to recreate some of nature's most stunning and beautiful effects on trees which are reduced in scale. When undertaking bonsai, you are beginning an experience that will expand your horizons in countless ways. You may find a new sense of appreciation for nature, you may start looking at trees, bushes and shrubs differently. You will certainly find yourself looking around all the "worst parts" of your local nurseries where they keep the plants that most people wouldn't look twice at. How the art of bonsai will change you is as unpredictable as nature itself, but be assured of one thing: Bonsai will change the way that you look at things. The Goals of Bonsai There are countless books written on the art of bonsai and each professes a slightly different (sometimes completely different) way of looking at the art. To suggest

that the goals I set out here are the only goals, the best goals, or even the goals that are or should be most appealing to you would be silly. They are, quite simply, the goals that have guided me. They are the three things I strive for in every tree I work on: Nature, Beauty, and Maturity. Nature I like my trees to look as natural as possible. To me that means a couple of different things. First, that means you should discover the tree inside the plant that you have found at your local nursery. Let the tree itself suggest possibilities to you. Does the trunk bend to the left? Let it. Work with it. Make that a feature of your bonsai. There are always possibilities in every tree. The real trick is in finding them, bringing them out, and highlighting them. The tree is always right, it is usually just a matter of listening to it closely enough to hear what it is telling us. Beauty Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. You trees should be beautiful to you. To some of us there is great beauty in following the rules of bonsai design, placing branches just so, and the like, for others, the thrill is in breaking all the rules. Your masterpiece only needs to be a masterpiece to you. It is probably a good idea to learn the rules before you go breaking them (that way at least you will know you are breaking them), but you should feel free to learn, experiment, and develop. There is no right way to measure beauty. Maturity One thing that most bonsai practioners will agree on is the idea that bonsai should simulate age. One of the goals of bonsai, then, is to produce the appearance of maturity in your tree. Although the tree may only be ten or fifteen years old, you can make it look as if it has been growing for decades or even centuries. Two features that give the appearance of age to trees are the caliper of the trunk and the degree of taper of the trunk. The trunks of bonsai (in most styles) will be very wide at the base and taper very smoothly to the top of the tree (the apex). One species that illustrates this quite clearly is the Trident Maple (Acer beurgeranum). Notice the way the massive trunk gradually tapers as it reaches the top. A Few Words of Warning Before venturing into bonsai, there are a few words of warning that I want to offer the newcomer that may help better prepare you for what is to come. Bonsai is an outdoor activity. Trees are outdoor plants, putting them into pots does not transform them into indoor plants. With very few exceptions, if you keep your bonsai indoors they will die. Make room for your collection outside. You'll be happier and your trees will be happier. You will make mistakes. Lots of them. Everyone does. In fact, most of us still do. You will kill trees. This is a sad fact of the activity, especially as you start out. You are dealing with
living things, and you must be respectful of that. Commit yourself to understanding why every tree dies and what can be done to prevent it. Learn from your mistakes and do your best to prevent them in the future. Try to limit yourself to a few kinds of plants. Every tree is different. Likewise, every kind of tree is different as well. Maples have differnet requirements from Junipers, which have different requirements from Serrisas, and so on. Learn to care for a few different types of plants, and grown your collection from there. Find a club or organization in your area and join. This is, undoubtedly, the best way to learn bonsai. People in these clubs have been, in my experience, always willing to help newcomers and very enthusiastic in their support. It is a great way to learn (most organizations hold workshops, have guest speakers, and even put on shows) and to see more experienced member's trees. Perhaps most importantly, understand that when you put a tree in a pot you are committing yourself to the care of that tree. You cannot simply ignore it or it will die. Bonsai is a responsibility as well as a hobby. If you practice it with care and patience, he rewards are tremendous. Finally, almost nothing in bonsai is immemdiate. Expect your trees to develop over years, even decades. It may be ten years (or longer) before your plant will actually be a "bonsai." Don't be discouraged by this, but think of it as part of the experience. During my first workshop I had brought in a tree that I had cut some months earlier. To my mind, I had spent a long afternoon shaping, pruning, perfecting and potting it. When I took it to the workshop, the instructor talked to me about branch layout, tree design, and helped me completely reshape the tree. When we were done it looked completely different and, much to my amazement, a hundred times better. Finally, I thought, this tree is finished! One of the more experienced club members stopped, looked the tree over, and nodded his head in approval. “In twenty years," he told me, "that will be a nice tree." Selecting your first tree When you are ready to work on your first tree you should select a species that is "forgiving" to the beginner. One of the most often recommended is the Juniper procumbens nana, a dwarf garden juniper. I recommend starting with it as well. They are readily available, take pruning well, can be worked on most of the year, and are generally inexpensive. They also root well as cutting, so you can begin starting your own "mini nursery" as you shape your first tree. In general there are five things that you should look for in nursery stock. First, look at the rootage and check to see

and shaping will be required in order for the tree to emerge? Do you see something in that mass of branches, twigs, needles or leaves that others might not? How can you bring it out? Finally, examine the plant to make sure it is healthy. Pull it out of its container and look to see if there are white fiberous roots (a sign of good health and growth) around the perimeter of the soil. Are the leaves colorful and vibrant? Is there new growth? Does the plant look healthy? As you experiment more and more, signs of growth and health will become more apparent to you. If you suspect the tree is unhealthy, pass on it. For your first (or one of your first) time out, try to pick something that will be able to withstand the process of pruning, wiring and potting that you are going to undertake. What tools will I need? Bonsai requires very few tools. Tools, however, make certain jobs or tasks easier and quicker. Tools can range from a few dollars to a few hundred dollars. As with most things, you get what you pay for. The range of quality (and price) in tools is immense and I suggest that you buy the best basic set of tools that you can afford. You will come to appreciate them with time, and, if you care for them, they will last you a long, long time. Must have: There are three tools that are essential to even beginning the process of shaping a tree for bonsai. Shears. You need a pair of scissors which will allow you to do the fine work of trimming in a small space. These scissors should be sharp and you should only use them for bonsai work. You may want to try a small set of pruning shears to start with. Eventually, you will want a pair of shears made especially for bonsai work. Concave cutters. This is probably the most important piece of equipment you can purchase. Concave cutters allow you to cut branches off of the tree and leave behind a concave wound. The wound will heal much faster than a straight cut, and will callous over in such a way as to make it very difficult to tell a cut has been made at all. These cutters are an essential part of your collection.
if it gives the appearance of a strong foundation. The roots, at the base of the trunk, should appear to gently spread out in a radial pattern (this will be less apparent on junipers) and should both provide a sense of stability and invite you to follow the line of the tree, focusing your attention on the trunk. Good rootage invites you to examine the tree from the ground up! If the rootage looks good, begin to examine the trunk. The qualities you are looking for in the trunk depend somewhat on the style of the tree. In almost all cases, however, a thich base which tapers gradually and gently to a thin apex will make for a nice tree. If you are thinking about a formal upright design, you will want a very straight trunk, with little or no curvature. If you are considering other styles, you will want to examine how the trunk "moves." Try to find a trunk that curves in interesting or unusual ways, that has some sense of movement, which invites you to examine it further. Follow the main trunk line to its highest point (that will, most likely, be the apex). Does it suggest a design to you? Does it look tree-like? Can you begin to see the tree within the plant? Third, look at the branching pattern. While most nursery stock will not be trained as bonsai, you should be looking for thick low branches and thinner higher ones. These branches will form the main structure of your tree. Try to imagine how the fit with and balance out the movement of the trunk. At this point, a style should be suggesting itself to you. Does the tree fit any particular style? Can you see it as a windswept design, as a cascade? What kind of growth
Wire cutters. While you will not need them immediately, I suggest purchasing a pair of bonsai wire cutters. If you put wire on, you will eventually have to take it off. These wire cutters allow you to cut the wire right up to the tree's bark, without harming the tree. These too are essential. Wire. You will want to get several different thicknesses of annealed copper wire. It is very flexible until it is bent, then it sets and holds its position. You will use it to position and train branches. Would be nice to have: These tools are things that you will eventually want to add to your collection. They make certain tasks easier and allow you to do more things with your trees. Knob Cutters. These are very similar to The concave cutters listed above, except that they have a spherical head, which allows you to cut branches and leave a small hollowed out scar. Very useful, but not as important as a good set of concave cutters.

roots to the apex while producing a natural structure of branches and foliage. Again, the branching starts about a third of the way up, and there should be little or no empty spaces. Most deciduous trees will be best suited to informal upright styles. Slanting (Shakan) The "slanting" of this style refers to the direction of the movement of the tree's trunk. A Shakan bonsai will have a very distinctive slant, often time balanced out by very strong rootage on the opposite side of the trunk. The goal of shakan is to balance the movement of the trunk with the placement of the branches so that the tree does not appear to be lopsided. A slanted style tree can often give a very powerful impression of strength and age. Cascade (Kengai) These trees give the appearance of a waterfall or cascade of foliage which spills over the pot and down toward the ground. The casade should have a small crown above the top of the pot and a long cascading main branch that flows from the lower portion of the trunk to the apex. Ideally, the tip of the cascade should line up with the line of the trunk. These trees, which often times simulate the growth of a tree along a mountain's side, exhibit both strength and beauty.
Folding saw. This is a useful tool for cutting through branches larger than the diameter of either concave or knob cutters. Particularly important for working with big trees. Small scissors. These are great for working with really small trees or really twiggy growth where it is hard to get larger shears in close. These are a must have if you want to do detail work on smaller trees.
Windswept (Fukinagashi) This style simulates the effect of sustained exposure to strong winds. In this design, each of the branches appears to be "swept" to one side, as if being blown by a strong wind or having large portions of foliage and branches stripped by envirnomental conditions. These trees are modelled on trees usually found in coastal areas, where strong envirnomental forces have shaped and sculpted them for years.
Root rake. A root rake is used to clear away dirt from the rootball before repotting. It is used to gently comb out the roots and to remove dirt. Tweezers. Tweezers have all sorts of purposes in bonsai, from pinching back new growth and pruning to removing unwanted objects from your bonsai. Most bonsai tweezers will have a small trowel on the end, useful for patting down moss, sowing seeds, and many other odds and ends. What are the basics of Bonsai? Basic styles When shaping a tree, you must first decide which style is best suited to the tree's natural design. There are complex array of different shapes and styles to choose from. There are, however, five styles that seem to be agreed upon basic or fundamental designs.
Bunjin (literati Style) This style is the most unconventional of them all. Bunjin often have long thin trunks which curve back around toward the front at the top, displaying the tree's foliage in a cascading form. It is not uncommon to see Japanese Red Pines shaped in this style. This style technically "breaks the rules" in a number of ways, but also imitate trees in nature that have been forced to contort themselves to survive. Often the result of adverse conditions, bunjin show us how nature itself "breaks the rules" in order to survive, not infequently with astounding grace and beauty.
Formal Upright (Chokkan) For a tree to be a fomral upright, it must have a very straight trunk and a very balanced distribution of branches. The goal is to develop a sense of balance, but not strict symmetry. The first branch should be the most developed and should be positioned roughly a third the height of the tree. This style is best suited to conifers.
Displaying your tree When you have finished working on your tree, you will want to find a nice place to display it for all to see. Ideally, it should be positioned so that the front faces forward and the tree is roughly eye level. Trees should never be placed directly on the ground. As your collection grows, you will want to create a display stand of some sort. You may choose to display bonsai alone on a single stabnd or together on a larger bench. Most important, you should make sure that the tree is positioned so that it either gets the light it needs or is sheltered from the sun if it requires shade.
Informal Upright (Moyogi) Informal uprights are one of the most common styles. This is the most basic design in that it follows the natural structure of the tree's trunk. The goal is to develop a single line of the trunk, reaching from the 87
