EXHIBITS AT ANOTHER EXCELLENT SHOW The UK’s largest and longest running dedicated property event returned to the Excel venue at Docklands, London for its 17th consecutive year. The show took place on 7,8 and 9 March 2008 and PropertyNC once again exhibited at this marvelous show.

PropertyNC has regularly attended the Homebuyer Shows for the past two years and continues to receive more and more interest from exhibition visitors at every show it attends. Attending the Excel Show with PropertyNC were four companies from Northern Cyprus; Fraser & Co, Caesar Resort (Afik Group) LC Homes and Sea Terra, all of which stated that exhibiting at this three day event was a worthwhile experience. Independent exhibits from North Cyprus companies, utilizing their own stands were, North Cyprus International, Boray, Remax and Partners Abroad. This year’s show featured property and property-related services from approximately 250 exhibitors including. major house builders, developers, estate agents, lenders, brokers, property investment training companies, landlord associations and other leading property experts . Over 100 seminars and debates about buying, financing and property management took place at the show. Approximately 40% of the show was dedicated to UK property and 60% to overseas property. This show created the opportunity to introduce North 28 PropertyNC.com

Cyprus to many people living in the UK and many other overseas companies and exhibitors. Many people actually discovered that their retirement or holiday home was in North Cyprus. Some gained knowledge about North Cyprus at the show while others came to the show specifically looking for homes and property in North Cyprus. North Cyprus companies are extremely pleased with the outcome of the exhibition. All companies have finalized sales and have arranged for North Cyprus flight inspection tours for many potential investors. All companies received many excellent leads and received much interest from serious buyers and investors. We have completed one sale and have many more serious clients. Exhibiting in the UK at the Homebuyer Show with PropertyNC was definitely worthwhile. It was the right thing to do”. The figures and statistics from the Excel show organizers are outstanding: Approximately 15000 visitors per day! Clearly, leads were generated that all of PropertyNC customers that were attending with us benefited from. Even our magazine based customers that could not or did not wish to attend generated interest and leads from PropertyNC magazine being handed out at a rate we have not experienced before. Some very positive comments were made by some of the PropertyNC customers such as: “we have many more leads than last year”, “There is far more interest than the last time we were here” and ”we have already made a sale, and this is only day one”. Thanks to our many loyal customers at PropertyNC, we have always

been able to portray North Cyprus in a positive light, a fast and picturesque developing country and a top class venue to purchase quality property. Needless to say, many people attending the Excel show and the many other shows PropertyNC advertises at have enquired about purchasing for retirement, this alone has developed into many positive leads for our customers. Will Cyprus be re-unified by the end of 2008? World leaders call on the newly elected Southern Cypriot president to meet with the TRNC leadership and work out a deal – Ben Dehlstron explains The election of the new South Cypriot president, Demetris Christofias, has been widely trumpeted by political commentators as the best chance for a lasting solution to the division of Cyprus since the island became divided in 1974. President Christofias swept to power in late February as his AKEL communist party received 53.4% of the vote, beating the conservative candidate Ioannis Kasoulides who polled 46.6% of Cypriot ballots in a second round of voting. Almost immediately after news broke of the election result, representatives from the UN, the EU and global governments sent messages of congratulations and urged the newly elected leader to meet with his TRNC counterpart and thrash out a deal. “The United Nations remains committed to providing support to President Christofias and President Mehmet Ali Talat in their common search for a solution,” said Michael Moller, special representative to the Secretary General in Cyprus, in a statement sent to President 32 PropertyNC.com

Christofias. While in Brussels, EU president Jose Manuel Barroso said that he was confident the momentum of this election victory would help in finding a lasting settlement. “Your election offers the opportunity to overcome the longstanding stalemate on the Cyprus issue,” he said. “I would strongly encourage you to grasp this chance and without delay start negotiations under UN auspices with the leader of the Turkish Cypriot community on a comprehensive settlement.” President Christofias has pledged to meet with President Talat, however no date has yet been confirmed. The South Cypriot president said: “Naturally the UN will be involved as usual, and I believe that soon we will arrange a first exploratory meeting,” he suggested. Speaking at a press conference given after the election, President Talat welcomed the news of a possible meeting with President Christofias, adding that the two once shared a common

World leaders call on the newly elected Southern Cypriot president to meet with the TRNC leadership and work out a deal – Ben Dehlstron explains The election of the new South Cypriot president, Demetris Christofias, has been widely trumpeted by political commentators as the best chance for a lasting solution to the division of Cyprus since the island became divided in 1974. President Christofias swept to power in late February as his AKEL communist party received 53.4% of the vote, beating the conservative candidate Ioannis Kasoulides who polled 46.6% of Cypriot ballots in a second round of voting. Almost immediately after news broke of the election result, representatives from the UN, the EU and global governments sent messages of congratulations and urged the newly elected leader to meet with his TRNC counterpart and thrash out a deal. “The United Nations remains committed to providing support to President Christofias and President Mehmet Ali Talat in their common search for a solution,” said Michael Moller, special representative to the Secretary General in Cyprus, in a statement sent to President 32 PropertyNC.com

Although the temperature very rarely drops below 12c on the coldest winter days, the island has unique weather phenomenon called ‘Coptic Storms’ brought about by Cyprus’ geographical location; set at the furthest eastern most point in the Mediterranean between Turkey and the Middle East. Coptic Storms are named after an ancient religion and charts foretelling their dates of arrival were drawn up thousands of years ago in Alexandria, Egypt. The Storms were charted to alert ancient seamen of pending perilous seas in the Mediterranean around Cyprus, thus enabling them to find shelter in ports and coves. Today, many local authorities such as Police, Fisheries and Marine Departments, as well as local fishermen, carry copies of this chart. The chart is usually accurate and rarely deviates more than 48 hours either side of the dates given, and rains can be expected 72 hours either before or after the Storms are predicted. Winds normally start from the south-west and veer west and north-west and last anything from 1 to 8 days. looking at a few of the uninvited but nevertheless welcome

guests in the garden. All throughout summer you will hear the (sometimes deafening) song of the Cicadas. These large songsters are a facinating insect that emerges from the ground in warm weather in great numbers to mate. Cicadas only sing during the day, and the silence when dusk falls can be shocking – as it happens almost immediately. It is only the males that sing, but why do they sing? Well, there are 2 reasons for this – firstly to attract a mate, and secondly (it is now thought) to repel their main predetors – birds. It is now believed that their deafening song is painful to a birds ears!! The larvae of the cicada live underground – sometimes for many years, where they feed on sap from tree roots. They cause little or no harm to

the tree itself. Cicadas are quite harmless to humans because they do not bite or sting. They do however have a horny body casing and their legs can scratch – so if you are tempted to inspect them more closely – be careful!! You will also hear the nocturnal chirriping of the tree frog – (Hyla savignyi) not as loud as the cicadas but quite audible on warm spring and summer evenings. The small tree frog comes in a variety of colours but here in Cyprus usually green. It is a sad fact that their natural habitats are drying up – in every sense of the word, so if you do come across these little fellows – please leave them be!!! As the summer progresses you may be lucky enough to see the humming bird moth (Macroglossum stellatarum). This large,

the delightful humming noise it makes as it hovers around the flowers. They love lantana flowers so if you have bushes of lantana in your garden – you will most likely see them around. One of the most engaging sights in the garden (and often the house) is surely the lizard! There are 11 species living in North Cyprus including the allusive chamaeleon (chamaeloe chamaelon). Once quite common – they are being reduced in numbers due to loss of habitat – and of course noisy humans!!! The other sad fact is, that they are hunted mercilessly by domestic cats. They are slow moving and once spotted by one our feline friends – it almost definite they will be killed. The most common lizards in North cyprus are the Snake-eye lizard (Ophisops elegans) and the European Geko (Hemidactylus turicicus). Both voracious insect eaters – you should welcome these with open arms. You will note that I have pointed out some of our more welcome visitors to the garden – but watch out!!! We would like to give you further information regarding the 2008 Propertync Property Awards in the hope to answer to any questions you may currently have; The application and judging process will be as follows; Registration forms completed by each client for each category and submitted to Roy Oswick. Application forms then to be provided by Propertync to each client for each application outlining the specific criteria areas. Applications to go through an initial assessment, once returned by the client. A team of verifiers will set out to verify each and every point stated on the application forms. This will consist of a physical attendance process, interviews, photos and all that will be necessary to deem the application as ‘verified and true’. A file to be compiled by the verifiers for each applicant showing and stating it’s criteria as officially true and verified. One member of the judges (to be agreed and nominated by the panel itself ) to attend all sites, and revisit the verified aspects of the applications, in order to confirm that the verified applications are ready for judging. This judge will act as the ‘eyes’ for the entire panel itself. The judges will have a 2 day conference approximately 2 weeks prior to the event and deicide who they each individually nominate as Gold and Platinum winners for each category. The winners will be announced on the night of the Awards. Our judges will be carefully selected and able to show a number of qualities to qualify as a judge for the event. These will include, areas of expertise in the named categories, have a history to have adjudicated at such events and have overall property industry knowledge and expertise. These judges will be selected from a worldwide arena, and not just from North Cyprus. You will be able to obtain registration forms (if you already have not been given any) to register your interest in the categories you would like to enter from Roy Oswick (0542 884 6806).

Our response rate has been brilliant. By hosting and arranging such an event, we hope to attract those worthy companies who deserve recognition not just in Cyprus, but in the World wide media for their hard work and excellence in North Cyprus. The event will be held as an ‘Oscar’ type premier evening, black tie, red carpet with several courses for dinner and consisting of international media attention. We will hold a Charity Raffle, in which ALL proceeds will go to the SOS Children’s Charity. We will begin looking for sponsors for the raffle prizes, your suggestions and comments are most welcome. Any sponsors will have free extensive media advertising prior to, and after the event. Each winner of an award will immediately have recognition from forthcoming buyers and investors. Gardener’s Checklist: After itching to get out in the yard and garden during the cold season, it’s now time to get out and get going. This is an incredibly busy month so organization helps get as much done as possible. As a cautionary note: Make sure your garden beds are not too wet. If it’s been raining and the soil is saturated, you’ll have to postpone your gardening for a bit longer.

Dig up your garden beds early this month. Turn under any cover crops you might have planted last fall. Let the beds settle for a week or so. Break up large clumps. The compost, which has been breaking down unobtrusively in a corner of the yard, may be ready to yield its wealth of organic goodness. Get to the bottom of your compost pile and pull out the most rotted parts to mix up for composted soil. Mixed with soil and forced through a screen, this makes the best dressing for covering seeds. Nutrient rich compost improves the texture, water rentention, and drainage of your soil. Prepare for pests. Slugs need to be killed as they are found. The smaller slugs are more greedy than big slugs and can eliminate small transplants overnight. Many pests are attracted to weak and sickly plants, so conditioning soil not only promotes growth, it can actually deter infestations of aphids, powdery mildew, and blackspot. Use biological controls whenever possible instead of relying on chemical sprays or dusts. Use only organic pest control methods if possible. Top dress your lawn this month with an inch or so of compost if you didn’t get to do it in March. Mixing it with a bit of wood ash ensures strong healthy growth. Once spread, you can also overseed patchy areas.

Repot houseplants. Take them out of their current pots. Examine roots. If they are root bound, repot with fresh potting soil in larger pots.

Harden off seedlings to prepare for transplant.

Transplant seedlings and young plants once the danger of frost is past. Use plant markers to mark each plant so you’ll remember what you put where. Protect tender plants from wind and pests.

Direct sow early spring vegetables like lettuces, spinach, and other spring greens as well as flowers such as nasturtiums. Other flowers that can be direct sown include snapdragons, asters, alyssum, calendula, centaurea, pansies, violas, scabiosa, mignonette, dianthus, poppy, cosmos, gypsophila, annual phlox, verbena, and ageratum. Marigolds can be planted during the last half of the month. Thin seedlings ruthlessly to encourage growth. By now you should have some idea of what perennials survived the winter and what needs to be yanked out and replaced this year. This is also a good time to move plants that may not have been well placed last season. These include hosta, ferns, and artemesia. It’s an ideal time to space plants out, especially if you are susceptible to that common malady of cramming too much in to too small an area. Divide perennials this month. They include chysanthemums, delphinium, anemone, fall asters, daylilies, and Shasta daisy.

If the ground isn’t frozen, plant bulbs. Prepare hole with a bit of bone meal first, then plant.

Sow herbs such as chives, parsley, sage, dill, thyme, marjoram, etc. in open spots on the border.

Plant trees and shrubs now to give them plenty of time to get established before the summer.

Prune grapes and fruit trees now. Don’t wait.
