Welcome to Sotogrande

editor’s note

Welcome to our very first edition of Sotogrande Guide to Everything, where we try to bring together all the most important resources and information that anyone living in or visiting Sotogrande could ever need. For me, Sotogrande is very dear to my heart and has been a favourite weekend and holiday destination for my family for many years. However, we’ve noticed that things change rather quickly. Restaurants and shops close, new ones open up and it’s really hard to stay on top of everything. So far, nobody has put together a proper guide where anything you could possibly be searching for will be listed. Be it polo matches, local dentists, hair dressers or beauticians and even the best place for ribs. As many of you well know, Sotogrande is famous for its beautiful villas and exceptional architecture and in this issue we have showcased some of the most beautiful homes in the area. In order to service our international clientele, we are also featuring some extraordinary properties from abroad. Since this is our first issue, we welcome any feedback or suggestions for future editions. We hope you enjoy this magazine and we wish you a wonderful summer in this little piece of paradise.

...What are the basics ....

Sotogrande is the largest privately owned residential development in Andalusia. It is composed of a 20 km2 stretch of land from the Mediterranean Sea into the hills of Sierra Almenara, providing contrasting views and beautiful landscapes. Located just 25 km east of Gibraltar and one hour from Malaga International airport, Sotogrande is easily accessible from just about any part of the UK or Europe. Sotogrande was masterminded in 1962 by philanthropist Joseph Rafael McMicking. He wanted to create a community in this sun-kissed corner of the Mediterranean where people from all over the world could thrive and pursue an active, healthy lifestyle embracing the unique opportunities of Sotogrande’s special coastal location. Sotogrande is divided into zones which make it easy to find your way around the port all the way to La Reserva. KINGS AND QUEENS: Found in the lower part of Sotogrande, known as the Kings and Queens, where all the streets are named after Spanish kings and queens, except for Paseo Del Parque, the main road which runs in a loop around the golf course boasting some of the most desirable properties. The Paseo is 5km long and you’ll see people running, biking or walking their dogs on this famous path. The plots in Costa are all large and mostly flat and have so much to offer be they riverfront, near the beach or overlooking the golf course. This was where the original construction began in the 60s. We’re sure the first pioneers never imagined how it would all grow, change and flourish over the decades. A AND B ZONES: are also found on the Costa side and they consist of beautiful tree-lined streets and stunning villas in all different price ranges. In this area, all street names start with either A or B respectively. SOTOGRANDE ALTO AND LA RESERVA: Above the N340 is the geographically larger part of Sotogrande, featuring rolling hills, wooded areas and villas with incredible sea, golf and country views. Some families prefer this area because of the proximity to the International School, horse riding schools and stables. There’s also an exciting new development in La Reserva which features one of the most prestigious golf courses and elegant clubhouses in

the region. The plans include the construction of a luxurious lakeside club complete with beach and endless amenities in a large lake surrounded by the rolling terrain of the golfing greens. THE PORT: In addition to the Village, the Marina of Sotogrande is also full of interesting shops and some amazing restaurants. The Ke Bar is very popular with locals and busy all year round. The Hairy Lemon has a very strong English following and some truly delicious dishes. Then there are many new restaurants opening up all the time, offering so many different dining options. The port is also a great place for shopping, whether you’re looking for high fashion clothes or just some fun beachwear. For the latest bathing suits and summer dresses make sure to visit Rosato Collections Boutique near the Ke Bar. Also in the port area we have a Craft Market every Sunday where you can enjoy up-market antiques and crafts, shop for clothes or sample some local delicacies. This area also has some incredible apartments to offer, some breathtaking penthouses and waterfront townhouses along the river. Sotogrande is truly a one of a kind experience, unique in its location and amenities it has to offer. Yet it has something for everyone whether your passion is polo, sailing, golf, or just lounging on one of the fabulous beaches. Those who live or vacation here swear it is the best kept secret in the world. THE VILLAGE: Nestled between the lower and upper parts of Sotogrande we find a charming little Spanish town called Pueblo Nuevo de Guadiaro, affectionately known by locals as the “Pueblo” or “Village”. This is the place where residents of Sotogrande mingle with the locals at the many bars, restaurants and cafes. This is also where we find a number of supermarkets, including Supercor, which is the gourmet market of Corte Ingles. There is also a Mercadona, a Lidle and there’s even an Iceland Overseas where English customers can find all their favourite foods from back home. In addition, there are mechanics, hair dressers, beauty salons, dentists, lawyers, language schools, real estate offices, lawyers, flower shops, vets, gyms, pharmacies, wine shops, furniture shops, clothing shops, hardware shops, etc. For some delicious cakes and afternoon tea, we’d highly recommend Pane & Cioccolato or Okay for some fresh bread and a great breakfast.

MAKING THE MOVE

Sotogrande and the coastline of Costa Del Sol has a special magic all of its own. When I first moved out here - over two wonderful years ago - I was so captivated by the Andalusian ‘alegría de vivir‘ that I never looked back. From sunny beaches and seafood served straight from the barbeque, to playing tennis under fluttering palm-trees and wandering streets filled with equally happy people, I knew that I had found my new home. However, as any Ex-Patriate knows, moving to a new country can be steep learning curve and it is easy to make mistakes. So, here are my top ten tips for financial peace of mind. system and have the right emergency numbers noted in your phone. 1)APPOINT TRUSTED ADVISERS For an ex-patriate, this is as important as wearing suntan lotion. I was fortunate to find a very helpful bank who helped me with everything from the ITVM for the cars to the community taxes. The simpler you can make your administration, the longer you have in the sun. 5) JOIN CLUBS AND ORGANISATIONS If you love your sport, it might be your local golf club, the padel centre or gym. For others, it might be relaxing on a boat or sipping rosé with the local community group. Either way, it’s a wonderful way to meet people. THE BEACH

All around the area there are a stunning selection of beaches to enjoy!

A) PLAYA GUADALQUITON is the 5km beach in front of a private estate between Sotogrande and Alcaidesa. This beach is very isolated and one of the quietest in Andalucia. Its name come from the small river that crosses the beach. The estate boasts the last cork-oak trees (alcornoques) which grow adjacent to the Mediterranean sea in Europe. Access on foot is from the Playa Torrecarboneria to the west and Playa Sotogrande to the east. A) PLAYA SOTOGRANDE is the beach that fronts the estate and is 2km long, situated to the close of the Guadiaro river estuary and natural protected area. The only car access is by the road that runs to the beach from Paseo del Parque to the west of the urbanization (36.27284,-5.283608). Parking is difficult on summer weekends. The Sotogrande Beach Club fronts the beach - you can get day membership. Pedestrian access is possible from the urbanization. To the west is Playa Guadalquiton, while the east end is backed by the River Guadiaro estuary protected wetlands. The river can be crossed in summer at the beach or via the road bridge 200m inland. An older name of this beach is Borondo. B) PLAYA PASEO DEL MAR: A small beach, 1km long, between the mouth of the Sotogrande marina and the Guadairo river. Triangular shaped, it is reasonably popular in the summer. This beach fronts the Paseo del Mar section of the urbanizations and the Octagon Beach Club, where day membership is available. Parking is difficult here in the summer.Facilities include a shower, toilets and lifeguard huts, a chiringuito and watersports centre. (36.288235,-5.274146) In the summer a free service water taxi takes visitors to the beach from the other side of the marina opposite Ke bar. Operating summer 11.30 to 15.00 and 16.00 to 19.00 Mon to Sat. C) TORREGUADIARO BEACH: This semi-urban beach lies between the village of Torreguadiaro and Sotogrande port to the east. It is about 1.3km long and gets quite busy - parking is limited in the Marina. The best car access is from the old N-340a west of the village at km134, with a tarmac car park (36.297712,-5.271978) near the 16th-century watchtower (Torre Vigias). The chiringuito, sunbeds, showers and lifeguard posts are towards the village end of the beach. There is also access to the west end from the Sotogrande port, with steps over the retaining wall. This beach is also known as Playa de las Conchas D) SMALL COVE: To the east of Torreguadiaro, near an the milas de plata hotel, is a small cove which cannot be seen from the road. Some parking is available by the Hotel Milla de Plata (36.306013,-5.262344) and a steep path leads down to the cove. This beach is surprisingly quiet even in the summer, and has no facilities, although the trees behind the beach offer shade. On the headland above (east side) the beach are some ruins of a Guardia Civil barracks.

Trocadero Sotogrande restaurant offers breathtaking views of the sea and surroundings. The Trocadero style menu mixes the Mediterranean cuisine with it´s use of local products and a hint of Asian cuisine - to give the truely Mediterranean fusions dining experiences. “A lovely beach club bar & restaurant. Perfect for lunch and dinner and both times of the day give you a unique experience. The menu & food could be improved but the drinks menu, atmosphere and far east-esque decor lends to a really cosy setting. It works for couples, friends and groups. A thumbs up from me.... “ (TRIP ADVISOR REVIEW)

The difficulty of the course lies mainly in the condition of the prevailing winds in the area. One of the special features of the course which most impresses visitors, is its spectacular view over the Mediterranean, Gibraltar and Africa. Its total length is: 5,866 m

Why We Love Sotogrande

Having had a vacation home in Sotogrande for a few years now, I feel qualified to share with you what made us fall in love with this beautiful place. We have visited during various parts of the year and each season, each holiday has a special charm and something different to offer. summer is by far the most vibrant and exciting time of the year in Sotogrande. Everything comes alive, all the homes and apartments fill up with celebrities, Polo players, Football players, Royalty and endless joyful vacationing families from all over the world. Paseo del Parque becomes full of children riding their bikes, people jogging, walking or strolling with their dogs. The beaches quickly fill up with those waiting all year to bask in the Mediterranean sunshine and crystal blue sea. The local chiringuitos (beach bars) are the place to be and the place to be seen. The local bars and restaurants put their best foot forward in the summertime with enticing menus and friendly staff who usually speak several languages. The evenings do get busy so you have to make sure you book ahead at your favorite spot. The Marina is a very special place in the summer with an evening market and vintage food trucks serving gourmet meals, offering an unimaginable charm and ambiance to the area. The Polo fields are also full of excitement. There are high fashion pop-up shops, gourmet restaurants, a disco which goes all night long and let’s not forget the famous polo matches, which are not to be missed. But that’s not all! The events in summer area endless; Golf Tournaments, Sailing Championships, Vintage car rallies, concerts, etc. autumn the weather is incredible in Sotogrande. Just a little cooler than in summer but the sea is still warm and the beaches become much quieter, in fact, in certain spots you can have a whole beach all to yourself. This is my favorite time to go hiking, bike riding and to discover some exciting new mountain trails, followed by lunch at a local venta. All the shops and restaurants are all still open but there are a lot less people around so we can enjoy some special treatment. This is the perfect season for golfing and other outdoor sports before the rainier season begins. The days are still long and the nights are still warm so the possibilities for activities and excursions are endless. Winter What do I enjoy most about Sotogrande in winter? Watching all the snow on TV everywhere else. I love swimming in the sea in winter, which never really goes below 16C. I love basking in the sunshine and enjoying days which would count as summer in any other country. I love walking my dogs and letting them loose on the beach, knowing there isn’t another person around for miles and miles. Sure the days are shorter but there’s so much to enjoy in the area. Marbella and Puerto Banus are just half an hour away where I can enjoy world-class shopping all year round. There is also an English cinema playing all the latest films. In the other direction, I love going to Tarifa and beyond and enjoy the incredibly rugged scenery, walking tracks and discovering hidden little restaurants that only the locals know about. If you enjoy skiing, then Siera Nevada is only 3 hours away, offering all the services and ski slopes of an Alpine resort. spring has to be my favorite time in Sotogrande. The flowers are in full bloom, everything is green again and the temperature is getting warmer by the day. The days are getting longer and there’s just so much going on and so much to do. During Easter (Semana Santa) everything fills up with locals and tourists and things start to come alive again. The chiringuitos are opening one by one and the beaches are being prepared for summer. The countryside is absolutely gorgeous and it’s the perfect time to go exploring, hiking, take weekend excursions to Ronda, Granada or Sevilla before these places inland become too hot to visit. Sotogrande is so much more than just a summer resort, whatever the season, this place truly has something for everyone.

These animals were the victims of the black market trade and were mistreated and uncared. The purpose of the rescue center is to provide these animals with better living conditions by the best carers. Several years after its commencement, the center opened its doors to the public for their enjoyment, but also to increase awareness. Gradually, with economic support, the Castellar Zoo is improving its facilities and installations for the public and animals. The center offers a second chance for the animals and offers the public an entirely different zoo experience, where visitors may feed the animals and interact directly with them.

a holiday in the sun is incomplete Without Wine!

Picture lunch by the pool with no wine in a cooler, an evening barbecue on a sun kissed patio and no wine glasses laid out, or a stunning summer sunset on a roof terrace and no wine bottle opening ritual. There would certainly be a void in these typical summer holiday experiences! One would agree then, that wine simply has that ability to get us to relax and absorb the moment. With the extreme temperatures reached in Southern Spain during the summer months, it is obvious which wine styles our taste buds crave – refreshing and crisp whites, dry yet fruity roses and mellow and relaxed reds which can be chilled slightly. These styles also tend to pair very well with one of the most important parts of our summer holiday, the enjoyment of its cuisine! Here is a selection of wines which we recommend for summer drinking. All are Spanish as we believe that “when in Rome, do as the Romans do”, however, at Vinopolis you will also find an extensive range of International wines. lealtanza blanco, rioJa €6.50 The use of Sauvignon Blanc is unusual for a white Rioja and yet this is an excellent example. It is fresh, crisp and lively with tropical and tangy citrus flavours. Goes very well with seafood and simple fish dishes, as well as the famous Paella.

monasterio de yuso rosado, rioJa €4.75 An excellent value rosé which is light with a slight tingle making it very easy to drink. Stunning onion skin pink colour, outstanding freshness with wild berries and peach flavours. Delicious on its own, as well as with fish, grilled vegetables, pasta and white meats.

paco y lola no12, rias baixas €8.50 Albariño is in fashion and you will understand why when you taste this wine! Very fresh with good acidity and heaps of fruit. Enjoy it on its own and also with sushi, seafood, pasta and rice dishes.

sierra cantabria rosado, rioJa €6.99 Its beautiful bright salmon colour makes this Rioja rosé so tempting. Fresh, intense and plenty of red berry fruit with a lively finish. Totally versatile – from a summer salad to grilled tuna to pizza and even curry, just to break away from your typical summer menu!

find the above and many more at vinopolis sotogrande. We Will deliver free of charge direct to your door. Address: Calle Sierra Bermeja 73, Pueblo Nuevo de Guadiaro, Tel: 956 69 58 58

marques de legarda crianza, rioJa €7.99 Beautifully made Rioja by the oldest active winery in the world! Clean, round and very well-balanced with intense fruit and a spice touch. Something special for meat on the grill and at a great price. Trus crianza, ribera del duero €14.99 An award-winning red from Spain´s other most famous wine region, Ribera del Duero. Intense and elegant with juicy fruit combined with soft oak releasing comforting hints of cinnamon and spice. Not entirely a summer red, yet too good to rule it out! IN advisable to cool slightly for optimum enjoyment.

In Search of the Juiciest Ribs... Those who know me know my passion for ribs. I love ribs! But with all the posh restaurants and gourmet options in Sotogrande, where does one find a good old fashioned juicy slab of ribs? Well, this quickly became my new mission. I searched high and I searched low and finally found the ribs of a lifetime at the most unexpected place, The Hairy Lemon. This local British pub/restaurant has nearly a cult-like following by local expats, being famous for its quiz nights, charity events and 1 Euro tapas every Friday night. Everyone knows if you want to get in on the action, you need to book well in advance. My girlfriend and I decided to drop by one Tuesday afternoon for a late lunch and I was delighted to notice ribs on the expansive menu. With slight trepidation I placed my order and with sweaty palms anxiously awaited my meal. The waitress warned me that the portion was huge but nothing prepared me for what was placed in front of me, a beautiful, succulent plate of spareribs with the BBQ sauce glistening on top. The side dishes were a creamy, tasty portion of coleslaw, which brought me back to some of the great meals I enjoyed in the US and a batch of crispy home-cut fries. With trembling hands I reached for my knife and fork but there was no need for a knife as the meat just literally fell off the bone. If I wasn’t such a gentleman trying to impress my lady, I would have just picked that sucker up with both hands and gobbled it all up. You’re probably wondering about the taste, after the exciting visual I painted for you. Well, let me tell you, these incredible ribs tasted even better than they looked, if that’s even possible. They were juicy, tender, cooked just right and just about melted in my mouth. The fat to meat ratio was just perfect and since that first meal we’ve been back countless times. I have to say that The Hairy Lemon has ruined all other ribs for me. Nothing else will ever come close. If you decide to try them for yourselves, tell them that Dante sent you and don’t be shy about asking for extra sauce.

gibraltar

welcomes millions of tourists every year and whether they are arriving to sample the fine cuisine, its natural beauty history or its sporting pursuits many of them will head to Main Street, the centre of Gibraltar’s commercial district and the scene of some of the best value shopping on the Mediterranean. Gibraltar has a history of shopkeepers and traders that dates back to the 1800s when the Rock flourished as a trading port boosted by its strategic, geographic location. During this period the modern identity of the Gibraltarian people evolved through a mixed population of Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Jewish and Moorish communities. Gibraltar is a VAT free jurisdiction so goods sold in Gibraltar offer the best value and the currency is the Gibraltar Pound, equivalent to Sterling, so there is no costly currency conversion for visitors from the United Kingdom. Along with the more traditional shops, visitors to Main Street will recognise international high street brands and chains. These sit alongside handicraft and souvenir shops. Best buys include cosmetics and perfumery, jewellery, tobacco and spirits, designer glass frames, specialist linens and electronics. For souvenirs and a taste of local life, head to Casemates Square where you’ll find local artisan shops and the Gibraltar Crystal Factory, where you can watch the glass blowers at work. Gibraltar is an easy 15 min drive from Sotogrande. there is ample parking outside the frontier ( following the parking signs) if you want to just walk in and not worry about the queue. The mains street is a ten munite walk from the frontier and there are alway taxis waiting as you cross, if you dont fancy the walk.

DRONING ON Dante Hardy is among the few certified commercial drone pilots in the area. His years of experience in video production coupled with his innovative techniques, pilot’s license from Flight Training Europe and competitive pricing make him the go-to person for any kind aerial photos or videos. Whether you’re trying to promote real estate or a local business, there’s no better way to give people a sense of location and scale than from the air. To many people the thought of drones, conjures up scenes from old Science Fiction movies or of military applications. But drones today are much more accessible to the general public and their uses have gone far beyond anything we could have ever imagined. You may be one of those people who had already purchased his very own drone for only 60 Euros on amazon. Not really for yourself, but for the “kids” and five minutes later it was stuck on top of a 30 foot tree or over the neighbours fence. What people still don’t realize is that drones are not toys and are only really safe in the hands of a qualified Drone Pilot. You can not only harm birds, break the law by infringing on someone’s privacy but you can also cause bodily harm to another person when not properly trained in drone operations. Real Estate Photography -Probably one of the most well-known and most common applications for drones is real estate photography, which for the first time was able to show potential buyers a totally different perspective of the property for sale. Drones capture images at a very high resolution compared to aerial survey and satellites. Showing your property through overhead photos taken by a professional drone operator will increase the appeal to potential buyers and such photos also receive a lot more attention on social media. BMsotogrande offer this fantastic drone service to our client. We are also happy to work with you for a filming session for you home For more infomation contact info@bmsotogrande or call 956 78 50 92 for a price lsit .

10 DAY TRIPS ronda sits in the heart

of the Serranía de Ronda, about 100kms from the city of Malaga. Surrounded by lush river valleys and sitting above a deep ravine, it is a place that literally takes your breath away when seeing it. Anyone who has been lucky enough to visit Ronda will understand its appeal. It is one of the most beautiful and visited cities in Spain (the third most visited city in Andalucia). Offering you, unforgettable views over the El Tajo gorge. The Puente Nuevo – new bridge – was actually completed in 1793 and took forty two years to build. The bridge joins the old Moorish town and the newer; El Mercadillo parts of the city. It is, by far in a way, Ronda’s most famous landmark. One of Spain’s most famous Parador hotels sits adjacent to the bridge and is a well worth a visit. The views of the El Tajo gorge are unforgettable. If you have the time, walk down into the gorge along the Camino de los Molinos. The views are the best to be had. Ronda is said to be the home of modern day bullfighting. The Real Maestranza bullring is one of the oldest and most picturesque in Spain. The ring can hold up to 5000 spectators. Francisco Romero, born in Ronda in 1695, is credited with giving bullfighting its modern day rules with the introduction of the cape and the muleta. His grandson, Pedro Romero (1754-1839) became one of Spain’s greatest bullfighters. He founded the Ronda School for Bullfighting, it is still known today for its classicism and

44

strict adherence to the rules. The Arabic baths in Ronda are the best preserved in Spain. They were built at the end of the 13th century during the reign of King Abomelik. The Mondragon palace is home to the municipal museum and some truly outstanding gardens. Built originally in 1314 by the Moorish King Abomelik, it was later used as the primary residence for Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand.

tarifa

is beautiful though cold as heck thanks to the wind. I now understand why it’s the surfing capital of Spain. It was pretty cool to see Africa so close, and ferries constantly going between the two continents. Kite surf is the reason Tarifa is no longer just a fishing village. Around thirty years ago the surfers came and conquered and nowadays the Batalla del Salado, Tarifa’s main commercial street, is lined with surf clothing emporiums and board shops. Kite surf central is Playa Valdevaqueros, about 6km outside town. Although the surfers kite off Los Lances in the winter, in the high season the beach is reserved for swimmers and sunbathers; quite unlike the beaches to the east of here, Los Lances is still relatively undeveloped and wild. Broad and backed by an unspoilt bird reserve, it’s perfect for family days out, walking and messing about in the water. There are a number of chiringuitos if you get hungry

and on the other side of the causeway that leads out to the island, tiny Playa Chica is more sheltered and perfect for toddlers Roman ruins are in plentiful supply all over Spain, the best known probably being the aqueduct in Segovia, but nowhere on the peninsula has a whole Roman city been so perfectly preserved as at Baelo Claudia in Bolonia, around 14km outside town in the Cádiz direction and barely signposted from the main road. Every September as the tourists trickle home the town celebrates its feria – a week long frenzy of fairground, food and the odd dollop of religious fanaticism. At the beginning of the week the Virgen de la Luz arrives in town by way of a spectacular procession of horses and riders. In Tarifa you have the opportunity to play other ‘nature’ sports such as hiking, sea fishing and diving. The latter two activities must be arranged in advance due to The Point Natural Park being protected. There are diving schools willing to introduce you into this wonderful underwater world. If you prefer, Tarifa is the ideal place for bird watching trips as the birds migrate across the water to Africa.

tangier

is a fascinating city in northern Morocco and a popular spot on many Mediterranean cruise itineraries. Situated on the Strait of Gibraltar, Tangier is just twenty miles from the coast of Spain.

The city is currently undergoing several changes, namely in the form of a lux marina, handsome seaside pedestrian promenade, and modern beachside cafés. The commercial shipyards will one day be relocated, and in place of the dilapidated harbour will be the slips for gleaming cruise ships. Snaking streets, traditional Islamic architecture, and quirky shops full of knickknacks make the city visually irresistible. We recommend Café Tingis in the Petit Socco (aka Zoco Chico), the rooftop terrace at Café Baba in the Kasbah, and Grand Café de Paris off of Place de France. People watching, head to the historical and gritty Café Hafa for beautiful views of the Mediterranean Sea. Tangier’s Medina, or Old City, is a labyrinth of cobblestone streets and a mixture of several architectural styles including Moorish, Andalusian, and European colonial. Its vibrant atmosphere and quirky shops make it the perfect place to wander aimlessly. The street plan is complex and many are uphill climbs, so be sure to bring a comfortable pair of walking shoes and don’t forget your camera. Rue Les Almohades is where you’ll find the largest concentration of shops selling things like antique doors, coffee tables, fabrics, mirrors, and other decorative items. Most stores will gladly ship your goods internationally. We recommend Boutique Majid for its large selection of furniture, jewellery, and ceramics. If you’re in the market for an authentic Berber rug, visit Coin de L’Art Berbère (53, rue des Chrétiens). You can visit the Grand Socco and discover the Grand Socco food market. Here, butchers, farmers, and fishermen have their goods crudely on display. A camel ride across the beach costs about 10 DH per person. Known as “Morocco’s Blue City,” Chefchaouen is located inland from Tangier in the Rif Mountains. As one of Morocco’s most beautiful towns is located 129 km southeast of Tangier (about 2.5 hours by car). Tip: Remember that people live and work here, so remem-

ber to be mindful of what you are taking pictures of, especially children and open doorways.
