PROPHECIES OF THE BLESSED ANNE CATHERINE EMMERICH
(REGARDING THE END OF TIMES)
Anne Catherine Emmerich
Biography Anne Catherine Emmerich was born in Germany in 1774 from a very poor family; she had a life full of continuous illnesses aggravated when she became an invalid by an accident. In the last years of her life, until her death in 1824, she received the visions of the life of Christ, of the Virgin Mary, and of life after death, as well as other visions of future events that would take place later as the Berlin Wall, Vatican Council II, etc. With her visions in his hand, Reynolds discovered the ruins of the city of Ur in Caldea, and the recently discovered home of the Virgin in Ephesus also resulted how she had described it. In the same way, in 1981, the passage ways under the Temple in Jerusalem were discovered, that Anne saw when she contemplated the mystery of Mary’s Immaculate Conception, dogma which would not be proclaimed by the Church until thirty years after the death of this visionary. 1.The Demolishers 1.1 The Mystery of Iniquity
“I saw different parts of the earth: my guide named Europe and, and showing me a sandy corner, told me these important words: -Here is the Prussia the enemy. Then he showed me a point to the north saying: -Here is the Moscow bringing with her many evils.” (AA.III.133) “The inhabitants were of an unusual pride. I saw them arming themselves and working everywhere. Everything was somber and threatening.” “I saw Saint Basil and others. I saw on top of the castle with shining roofs, the evil one holding on to the steeples.” “I saw that among the devils chained by Christ, when He descended into hell, some were loose, not for a long time and had caused this sect. I saw that others are going to be released from two generations to two generations.” (October 19, 1823) “She saw (Brentano speaks, the transcriber) with its terrible consequences, the measures that the propagators of the lights took everywhere through which they reached the power and the influence, to abolish the divine cult as well as all the practices and the pious exercises, or to make of these something so vain as were the big words of light, the charity of spirit, under which they hid themselves and to the rest the empty desolation of their business in which God was not there at all.” (AA.III.161) “My guide took me around all the earth: he made me go without stopping through immense caverns made of darkness and in which I saw an immense quantity of people committing mistakes through all the parts and busy in tenebrous works. It seemed that I went through all the inhabited points of the globe, only seeing the world of vice.” “Very often I would see new troops of men fall like from on high into this blindness of vice. I didn’t see anything improving… He made me enter into the darkness and consider again the wickedness, the blindness, the perversity, the deceitfulness, the vindictive passions, the pride, the betrayal, the envy, the avarice, the discord, the murder, the lust, and the horrible impiety of men, all types of things that nevertheless were not of any benefit to them, but that it made them each time blinder and miserable and sank them each time more deeply. Often I had the impression that entire cities where situated over a thin crust of very fine earth and took the risk of sinking very soon in the abysm.” “I saw those men dig themselves lightly covered pits for others: but I didn’t see any good person in this darkness, or anyone consequently, fall into the pits. I saw all these wicked people as big tenebrous spaces that extended from one side to the other; I saw them in a hubbub like in the tumultuous confusion of a great fair, forming different groups that did evil and masses that mixed one with the other: they committed all types of guilty acts and each sin brought as a consequence another sin. Often it seemed like I submerged myself even deeper at night. The way descended a steep hill: it was something horridly frightful and that extended itself around the
4
entire earth. I saw towns of all colors, wearing the most diverse clothing and all submerged in the abominations:” (AA.II.151) “I often would wake up filled with anguish and with terror: I would see the moon shine peacefully through the window, and I prayed to God that He would not let me see those horrible images. But immediately He would make me descend again into those terrible tenebrous spaces and see the abominations they were committing. I found myself once in a sphere of sin so horrible that I thought that I was in hell and started screaming and moaning. And then my guide told me: “I am not near you, and hell cannot be where I am.” “It seemed like I saw a very wide space that received more the light of day. It was like the image of a city belonging to the part of the world that we live. A horrible spectacle was shown to me. I saw Our Lord Jesus Christ being crucified. I shook to the bone: because the only ones there were men of our time. It was a martyrdom of the Lord much more frightening and much crueler than the one He must have suffered from the Jews.” (AA.II.157) “Ending the story of this horrible vision whose remembrance provoked convulsive palpitations, and that nothing could convince her to tell it entirely, she said: “-my conductor spoke to me like this: “You have seen the abominations to which blind men fight in the darkness”. “And I saw with horror a great number of persons known by me, including priests. Many lines and branches coming out of the people that erred in the darkness disembogued in this place (The place of the new Crucifixion). (AA.II.157) “I saw a numberless multitude of unfortunate, oppressed, tormented, and persecuted of our days in various places, and saw always that because of it Jesus Christ was mistreated in person. We are in a deplorable time in which there is nothing more, refuge against evil: a dense cloud of sin weighs over the entire world, and I see men doing the most abominable things with tranquility and complete indifference(…) I saw this in several visions while my soul was led through the different countries over all the earth.” (CC.89) “I saw new martyrs, not of the present time (1820, year of the vision) but of the time that will come (…) Nevertheless, I see that they are being oppressed now.” (AA.III.112) 1.2 The Demolition of the Church
“I have seen people of the secret sect mining without ceasing the great Church…(AA.III.113)” “…and I have seen closely from them a horrible beast that had come out of the sea. It had a tail like a fish, claws like the ones of a lion, and several heads that surrounded like a crown a very large head. Its mouth was wide and red. It was spotted like a tiger and he seemed to be very familiar with the demolishers. He would often lie down in the middle of them during their work: also often, they would go looking for it in the cavern where it hid sometimes.” “During that time, I saw here and there, in the entire world, many good and pious persons, most of all ecclesiastics, vexed, prisoners and oppressed, and I had the feeling that one day they would be martyrs.” (AA.III.113)
5
“Since the Church was already in great part demolished, just the choir and the alter remained standing, I saw how the demolishers entered in the Church with the beast.” “(The demolishers found in the temple)… a woman full of majesty. It seemed to me that she was expecting, since she was walking slowly: the enemies were full of panic when they saw her and the beast then couldn’t take one more step to go forward. The beast stretched the neck towards the woman with the most furious aspect, like if he wanted to devour her. But the woman turned around and kneeled with the face against the earth. I then saw the beast fleeing again towards the sea and the enemies run in the greatest disorder) (AA.III.113) “I saw Saint Peter’s Church and an enormous quantity of men working to invert it, but I also saw there others doing repairs. Chains of work busy, from this double work they extended throughout the world and I was amazed of the coordination with how all of that was being done. The demolishers took out great pieces; they were particularly a great number of sectarians and with them the apostates. These persons, doing their work of destruction, seemed to follow certain orders and a certain rule: they had white aprons with a blue ribbon and with pockets, with stonemason’s trowel in the waist. In addition they also had all types of garments: there were distinguished men among them, tall and fat, with uniforms and crosses, who, nevertheless, did not work directly in the labor, but marked the walls which had to be demolished. I saw with horror that among there was also Catholic priests” (AA.II.202) “Already all the interior of the church was destroyed: the only thing standing was the sanctuary with the Most Holy Sacrament” (AA.III.203) “I have seen the Church of Saint Peter: it was demolished with the exception of the choir and the Main Altar (September 10, 1820) (AA.III.1118) “I also saw, at the end, how Mary extended her mantle above the Church and how the enemies of God were chased away” (AA.11.414) “May of 1823. Again I had the vision of the secret sect undermining through all the parts the church of Saint Peter. They worked with instruments of all kinds and ran here and there, carrying rocks that they had removed. They were obliged to leave the altar, they couldn’t remove it. I saw an image of Mary being desecrated and removed.” (AA.III.556) “I bemoaned the Pope and asked him how he could tolerate that there were so many priests among the demolishers(…) I saw in this occasion because the church has been founded in Rome; it is because there is the center of the world and that all the people are linked with it by different relationships. I also saw that Rome will remain standing as an island, like a rock in the middle of the ocean, when everything, around it, will fall into ruins.” “When I saw the demolishers, I was marveled of their great ability. They had all kinds of machines: everything was done according to a plan: nothing was produced by itself. They did not make any noise; they paid attention to everything; they did all types sleight, and the rocks seemed often to disappear from their hands. Some among them reconstructed: destroyed what
6
was holy and big and what they built was just empty, hollow, and superfluous. They took the stones from the altar and would make a stairway in the entrance.” (AA.III.556) 1.3 The Darkening of the Church
“I saw the terrestrial church, meaning the society of the faithful on earth, Christ’s army in their state of passing over earth, completely darkened and desolate.” (AA.II.352) “You priests who do not move! You are asleep and the fold is burning by all the sides! You don’t do anything! How you will cry one day for this! If only you would have said one Our Father! (…) I see so many traitors! They can’t stand that it is said: “this is going bad”. To their eyes everything is well as long as they can glorify themselves with the world!” (AA.III.184) “I saw the shortages and the decadence of the priest, as well as its causes. I saw the punishments that are being prepared.” (AA.II.334) “The servers of the Church are so lax! They no longer make use of the force they possess in the priesthood.” (AA.II.245) “If one day the souls demand what the clergy owes them causing them so many losses by their negligence and their indifference; it would be something terrible!” (AA.II.342) “They will have to render account of all the love, all the consolations, all the exhortations, all the instructions in reference to the duties of religion, that they do not give; of all the blessings they do not distribute, in spite of the force of the hand of Jesus being over them, for everything they omit from doing in the likeness of Jesus.” (AA.II.358) “…(because) the caresses done to the spirit of the time from the part of the servers of the Church.” (AA.III.377) “I saw relics left abandoned and other things of the same kind.” (AA.II.347) “…for a great quantity of people who had good will, the access to the sources of the grace of the heart of Jesus was prohibited and closed by the suppression of the exercises of devotion, by the closing and the profanation of the churches.” (AA.III.167) “I had a vision concerning the faults of countless pastors and the omission of all their duties towards their flock.” (AA.11.347) “I saw many good and pious bishops, but they were mute and weak and the bad party many times took the force.” (AA.II.414) “All of this was made known to me by the recitation of the genealogy of Our Lord before the Most Holy Sacrament, in the Feast of the Corpus Christi, it holds a great and profound mystery; I have known by it that the same thing, that between the ancestors of Jesus Christ, according to the flesh, many were not saints and including were sinners without leaving to be steps in Jacob’s ladder, through which God descended to humanity, for the same reason also the unworthy
7
bishops remain capable of consecrating the Most Holy Sacrament and of conferring the priesthood with all the powers which are conferred to him.” (CC.175) “I saw a city, a meeting of ecclesiastics, of laity and of women, which were seated together, eating, saying frivolous jokes, and above them a dark cloud that leads to a submerged plain in the darkness. In the middle of this darkness, I saw Satan seated under a horrible form and, around him, so many companions as persons were in the meeting that was occurring below. All these bad spirits were continuously moving and busy in pushing the wickedness to this meeting of persons. They were listening and acted over them in each possible way. These persons were in a state of sensual excitement very dangerous and busy in lazy and provoking conversations. The ecclesiastics were those who have as a principle: “You have to live and let live. In our time we don’t need to be apart or be misanthrope: you must get happy with those that are happy”. (AA.II.488) “Since he (Satan) spoke of his right and anyway that language amazed me very much. I was instructed that he really acquired a positive right when a baptized person who had received from Christ the power to overcome him, turned to him freely and voluntarily because of the sin.” (AA.II.489) “I see a quantity of ecclesiastics punished of ex-communion, who do not seem to be worried or even know it. And nevertheless, they are excommunicated when they take part in these works, when they enter into associations and adhere to opinions over which weighs the anathema. I see these men surrounded of a cloud like a separation wall. By this you see how much God takes into account the decrees, the orders, and the defenses of the chief of the Church and keeps them in vigor when even the men do not worry about it, deny it or laugh about it.” (AA.II.148) “I was showed how the pagans of old humbly adored other gods different from themselves (…) The cult (of those pagans) was worth less than the cult of those who adored themselves in one thousand idols and didn’t leave any space to the Lord between all those idols.” (AA.III.102) “I saw how fatal the consequences of this falsification of the Church were. I saw it grow; I saw the heretics of all types come to the city (Rome).” “I saw how the tepidity of the local clergy grew, I saw how a great darkness was made.” “Then, the vision enlarged itself through all the sides. I saw through all parts Catholic communities oppressed, vexed, imprisoned and deprived of liberty. I saw many churches closed. I saw great miseries happened through all parts. I saw wars and bloodshed. I saw the people savage and ignorant, intervene with violence.” (AA.III.103) “… that will not last a long time…” “Again I saw the vision in which the Church of Saint Peter was mined, following a plan by the secret sect, at the same time that it was deteriorated by the storms.” (AA.III.103) “I saw help come at the moment of greatest anguish.” (AA.III.104) 1.4 The Church of the Apostates
8
“I saw the church of the apostates grow greatly. I saw the darkness that came out of it, spread around, and I saw many people abandon the legitimate Church and go to the other one saying: “There everything is more beautiful, more natural, and more orderly.” (AA.II.414) “I saw deplorable things: they played there, drank, talk, seduced the women in church, in one word, all kinds of abominations were committed there. (AA.II.120) “The priest would let that anything be done and would say mass with much irreverence. I saw very few who still had piety and judged things healthily. All of that afflicted me very much. Then my celestial Husband grabbed me by the middle of my body, like he himself had been tied to the column and told me: “It is like this that the Church will still be chained. It is like this how it will be tightly tied before it can release itself.” (AA.II.120) “He (my celestial spouse) also showed me in numberless pictures the deplorable conduct of the Christians and of the ecclesiastics, in the spheres each more vast extending itself throughout the entire world, including my country. It was an immense picture and unspeakably sad which is impossible to describe. He went on showing me that there is no longer almost more Christians in the old sense of the word. This vision filled me with sadness.” (AA.III.125) “I saw in the future religion fallen very low and remaining only in some places, in some homes, and in some families that God has protected also from the disasters of the war.” (AA.III.557) “(September 12, 1820). I saw a strange church being built and in reverse of all the rules. The choir was divided in three parts, of which one grade was higher than the other. Under there was a dark cellar full of smoke.” (AA.III.104) “…in the first part I saw a throne being dragged… in the second a barrel full of water. The water alone seemed to have some kind of sanctification… in the highest a table…” “I didn’t see any angel present in the construction: but diverse planetary spirits (who take care of trick men) of the most violent kind, dragged all types of objects to the cellar, where characters in tiny ecclesiastical mantles took them to take them with them. Nothing came from the high in this church: everything came from the earth (…) and from the tenebrous region (…) everything in that church was dark, against the current and without life: there was only mockery and ruin.” “I saw nearby another church where the clarity reigned and that was full of all kinds of graces from up high. I saw the angels go up and down, I saw life and growth… (and also) tepidity and dissipation.” “Nevertheless, the traditional Church (as imperfect and darkened as it is as not be able to see the light that awaits it) was like a tree full of sap in comparison to the other that looked like a trunk full of inanimate objects. This one was like a bird that glides; this one is like a paper dragon, with a tail full of ribbons and signs which drags in stubble instead of flying. I saw that many of the instruments that were in the new church, as for example the darts and arrows were gathered just to be used against the live church.” (AA.III.104)
9
“They kneaded bread in the cellar below; but nothing came out, and the work was useless.” (AA.III.105) “I also saw the men with little mantles take wood to the galleries where was the site of the preacher, light something, blow with all its strength and an extreme pain happened, but all of this only resulted in smoke and in an abominable vapor.” (AA.III.105) “Then they made a hole on the top with a stick, but the smoke didn’t want to go up and everything remained submerged in an suffocating darkness.” “Everything remained on earth and went to earth, and everything was dead, artificial, and made by the hand of men: it is properly a church of made by humans following the latest fad, also like the new heterodox church of Rome, which is of the same species.” (AA.III.105) “I found myself in a great hall. In both sides in front of the desks, young people in long habits that seemed as seminarians. In the middle a heavy man went and came. Suddenly in the place of the men, I only saw just horses, at both sides, and in the middle a great ox ruminating that went and came back, while behind him the horses showed their teeth and did all kinds of grimaces. I was waiting for the ox to show them the horns and would make them to be quiet, but the only thing he did, was, reaching one side of the hall, to hit the wall with the horns. There was already a hole and I told myself that everything was going to crumble over them.” (AA.III.176) 1.5 The False Church
<November 12, 1820> - I was traveling from a dark and cold county and reached the great city (Rome). There I saw again the great and singular church that they were building; there wasn’t anything holy in it; I saw that in the same way that I see another Catholic work, ecclesiastic, in which the angels work together, with the saints and the Christians; but her the collaboration was done in other ways, more mechanical. (AA.III.105) I saw on the top lines and drawings of figures, and I saw how, immediately, on earth, a man had raised a plan, a drawing. I saw the action of the proud planetary spirits in their relationship with this construction make themselves feel even in the farthest away regions. I saw even to great distances the impulse given for the preparation of everything that could be necessary and useful for the construction and for the existence of this church; I saw there the coming together of types of persons and of things, of doctrines and opinions. In all of this there was, something of pride, of conceit, of violence, and everything seemed to be successful, and it was shown to me in a multitude of scenes. I saw the planetary spirits go up and down. I saw them sending rays over the persons that built the building. Everything was done according to human reason. (AA.III.105) I didn’t see even one angel, not even one saint cooperating with this work. But I saw many, farther away, in the background, the throne of the savage people armed with swords, and a figure that laughed and said: “Construct it as solid as you like, we will tear it down.” (AA.III.105)
10
(I saw) that the religion is attacked and suffocated so skillfully that nothing remains but just a small number of priests who are not seduced. I can’t say how this has been done, but I see the fog and the darkness extend more each time. Nevertheless, there are three churches which they cannot take hold of: they are Saint Peter’s, the Saint Maria Maggiore, and the Saint Michael’s. They work continuously to demolish them, but get to. All work for the demolition, including the ecclesiastics. A great devastation is next. (AA.III.122) I saw many abominations in great detail; I recognized Rome and I saw the Church oppressed, and it decadence in the interior and in the exterior. (AA.III.159) I saw on a green prairie many persons, among which were the wise men, meeting on the side… (AA.III.156) …and a new church appeared in which they were gathered. This church was round with a gray dome and so many people went that I couldn’t understand how that building could hold so many. It was like an entire town. Nevertheless, this new church turned each time more somber and black (in the beginning it was only gray) and everything that was done in it was like a black vapor. That fog extended outside and all the greenery wilted; various parishes in the surrounding areas were invaded by the darkness and the dryness, and the prairie, at a great distance, turned like a somber swamp. I saw several groups of well-intentioned people run to one side of the prairie where there still was greenery and light. I cannot find words to describe the terrible, sinister, deadly action of this church. All greenery wilted, the trees died, the gardens lost their enchantment. I saw, as you can see in a vision, the darkness produce its effect to a great distance; everywhere they reached, it extended like a black cord. I don’t know what happened with all the people who were inside of that church. It was like it devoured the men: it turned each time blacker, it looked exactly to the forging coal and it flaked in the most horrible way. After this (after the horrible vision of the black church) I was guided by three angels, to a green place surrounded by walls, very big approximately like the cemetery which is here in front of the door; I was placed there like in an elevated stool. I didn’t know if I was alive or dead, but I had a great white robe. (AA.III.157) The older of the three told me: “Blessed be God! Here light and greenery still remained.” Then from the sky fell, between the black church and me, like a dazzling rain of shining pearls and of precious stones… And one of my companions (one of the three angels) ordered me to receive them. Later they left. I don’t know if all of them left; I only remember that, in the great anxiety that the black church caused me, I didn’t have the courage of receiving the precious stones. But when the
11
Angel returned to me, he asked me if I had picked them up and I answered that I did not; then he ordered me to do it immediately. Then I bent forward and still found three small stones with the faces engraved like crystals. They were situated by order: the first one was blue; the second one was light red, the third one of a brilliant and transparent white. I took them to my two other companions who were smaller than the first, and, and always marching from here to there, they rubbed one against the other and made the most beautiful colors and the most beautiful rays of light to come out of them which extended through everything. There where they reached, the green was reborn, the light and the life spread themselves. And I also saw to one side the tenebrous church that was degrading itself. Later, suddenly, a great multitude spread through the green and illuminated prairie, heading towards a luminous villa. By the other side of the church, everything remained still in a somber night. (AA.III.156) They want to be one body in something different that the Lord. A body was formed, a community outside the body of Jesus which is the Church: a false Church without a Redeemer, in which the mystery is to have no mystery. (AA.II.89) It is when the science has separated from the faith when this Church without a Savior swims, the pretended good works without the faith, the communion of the unbelievers having the appearance of virtue, in one word, the anti-Church which center is occupied by wickedness, error, lies, hypocrisy, looseness, the artifices of all the demons of the time. (AA.II.89) 1.6 The Communion of the Layman
Everything is (in this <false church>) fundamentally evil; it is the communion of the layman. I can’t say up to where what they do is abominable, pernicious, and vain. (AA.II.89) They want to be one body in something different than the Lord! (AA.II.89) I had a vision in which I saw the others in the false church, a square building, without a bell tower, black and dirty, with an elevated dome. They were in great intimacy with the spirit that reigned there. This church is full of filth, vanities, silliness, and of darkness. Almost none of them knew the darkness in which they were working. Everything is pure in appearances: but its only empty. (AA.II.88) (The false church) is full of pride and of presumption, and with it destroys and leads to evil with all kinds of good appearances. Its danger is in its apparent innocence. (AA.II.89) They do and want different things: in certain places their action is harmless: they also work to corrupt a small number of the wise, and so all together lead to a center, in a bad thing because of its origin, in a work and an action outside of Jesus Christ by which only all life is sanctified and 12
outside of which every thought and all action remain as the empire of death and of the devil. (AA.II.89) I found myself in a ship with holes and I was lying in the bottom, in the only place that was intact: the people were seated in the two sides of the boat. I prayed continuously so they wouldn’t be thrown out by the waves: nevertheless, they mistreated me and kicked me. I saw that at each moment the boat was about to sink and I was dead of fright. (AAA.III.147) Finally they were obliged to take me to land where my friends were waiting to take me to another place. I always prayed so these unfortunates would also disembark… …but I was just barely on shore that the boat sank and none who were in it could save himself, which filled me with sadness. In the place I went to there was a great abundance of fruits. (AA.II.147) When I looked under me, I saw clearly, through a veil of somber color, the errors, misconducts, and the countless sins of the men, and with what foolishness and what wickedness, they acted against all truth and all reason. I saw scenes of all kinds: I saw the ship in distress again, taking these men convinced of their immense merit and admiration, also many others, to pass close to me in a dangerous sea, and I was waiting that at any moment they would perish. I saw among them priests and I suffer profoundly to help them return to repentance. (AA.III.149) I saw so many traitors! They can’t stand to be told: <this is going bad>. Everything is fine in their eyes as long as they can be glorified with the world. (AA.III.184) 1.7 The Pope is Betrayed
I saw the Pope in prayer; he was surrounded by false friends that often did the contrary of what he said. (AA.II.203) I saw the Holy Father in a great tribulation and a great anguish that affected the Church. I saw him surrounded by much treason. (AA.II.414) They want to take away the prairie from the shepherd which is his! They want to impose another one who leaves everything in the hand of the enemies! The, taken by ire, she lifts her closed fist saying: German rascals! Listen! You won’t succeed! The shepherd is in a rockery! You, priests, do not move! You sleep and the farm burns through all the sides! You don’t do anything! How you will cry one day because of this! (AA.III.184) I saw, in certain cases of extreme misfortune, the Pope has visions and apparitions. (AA.II.414) 1.8 The False Ecumenism
I saw, under the image of several gardens forming a circle around me, the relationship of the Pope with the bishops. I saw the Pope himself over his throne, placed like in a garden. I saw in several gardens, the rights and the powers of these bishops, under the form of plants, flowers, 13
and fruits, and I saw relationships, trends, influences, like strings or lightning going from the seat of Rome to the gardens. I saw over the earth, in these gardens, the spiritual authority of the moment: I saw in the air, on top of them, the closeness of new bishops. So, for example, I saw in the air (in the future), on top of the garden where the severe superior was (the bishop then, severe because he was firm in the faith), a new mitred bishop, the mitre and everything else. I saw around him Protestants that wanted to make him come down from the garden, but not with the conditions that the Pope had demanded. (AA.III.128) They were looking to infiltrate themselves through all kinds of means: they made a mess in some parts of the garden where they planted bad seeds. I saw them in one place, as well as in another, or to leave waste, demolish and not remove the debris, etc. Everything was full of traps and of ruins. I saw them intercept and deviate the ways that led to the Pope. (AAA.III.128) I saw following that when they introduced the bishop in the way they had proposed, he was an intruder, introduced against the will of the Pope, and who did not possess the legitimate spiritual authority. (AA.III.128) I saw, because of what I believe, almost all the bishops of the world, but only a small number perfectly clean. (AA.III.136) I saw everything in respect to Protestantism take more power each time, and religion fall in complete decline. (AA.III.137) There was in Rome, even among the prelates, many people with feelings of being Catholic who worked for the success of this matter (the fusion of the churches). I also saw in Germany mundane ecclesiastics and illuminated Protestants manifest wishes and form a plan for the fusion of the religious confessions and for the suppression of the papal authority. (AA.III.179) ‌ and this plan had, in the very Rome, its promoters among the prelates! (AA.III.179) They were building a great church, strange and extravagant; everyone had to enter in it to join and possess there the same rights; evangelical, Catholics, all kinds of sects: what should be a true communion of the layman where there wouldn’t be but one shepherd and one flock. There also had to be one Pope but that he would not possess anything and be paid a salary. Everything was prepare offhand and many things were already done: but in the place of the altar, there was only desolation and abomination. (AA.III.188) 1.9 The Profanation of the Blessed Sacrament
I saw very often Jesus himself cruelly immolated over the altar by the unworthy and criminal celebration of the holy mysteries. I saw before the sacrilegious priests the holy Host rest over the altar like a live Child Jesus that they cut up into pieces with the patina and that they martyrized horribly. Their mass, even really realizing the holy sacrifice, looked to me like a horrible murder. (CC.89)
14
…the devotion to the Most Holy Sacrament would fall completely into decline and the very sacrament into oblivion. She said this referring to particularly to that part of the Church in which she saw all the things dry up and die before the progress of the lights and under the regimen of liberty, of charity, and of tolerance. (AA.III.164) I see the enemies of the Most Holy Sacrament who close the Churches and impede that He is adored, to come close to a terrible punishment. I see them sick and in the deathbed without a priest and without sacrament (AA.III.167) The Feast of the Most Holy Sacrament had turn into a necessity because at that time (of its institution), the adoration that was due was much unattended and the Church should proclaim its faith through a public adoration. There is no feast or devotion established by the Church, article of faith promulgated by her that won’t be indispensable, necessary, and demanded for the maintenance of the true doctrine in a given time. (AA.II.286) 1.10 The Careless Blessing
It is very sad that the priest, in our time, (in Anne Catherine’s) be so indifferent in what respects to the power of blessing. Often it could be said that they no longer know what the priestly blessing is; many barely believe in it and feel ashamed of the blessing as of an old and superstitious ceremony. Many, finally, don’t reflect that virtue at all and in that grace they have been given by Jesus Christ and treat the thing too lightly. As the Lord has instituted the priesthood and transmitted to them the power of blessing, it is necessary for me to languish and consume myself in the wish of receiving the blessing. Everything in the Church doesn’t do more than one body: the rejection of one part makes that the other remains affected. (AA.I.523) 1.11 The Celibacy of the Priests
From the Sunday of Quasimodo until the third Sunday after Easter (1820), her expiatory sufferings increased to the point that her surroundings, in spite of being used for a long time as a spectacle, she could hardly stand them. Anne Catherine suffered because of the attacks directed by the followers of Wessemberg against the celibacy of the priests and the large scandals tied to those unfortunate handlings. (AA.III.167) I have been led to a flock, in one of the extremities of the field of the nuptial house. Among the sheep that composed it, there were many male rams that deteriorated the flock hitting it with their horns. (AA.III.174) I was ordered to place apart the bad rams. This was very unpleasant and very painful for me, since I could not distinguish them well from the others. 1.12 Irreverent Tongue and Sacred Tongue
I cannot use the prayers of the Church translated into German. They are for me too insipid and too repellent. In prayer I am not tied to any tongue and, throughout my life, the Latin prayers 15
have always seemed to me much more profound and more intelligible. In the convent, I always rejoiced beforehand when we were going to sing the hymns and responses in Latin. The feast was even livelier for me and I could see everything that I sang. Most of all, when we sang in Latin the litanies of the Holy Virgin, I would see, successively in a wonderful vision, all the symbolic figures of Mary. It was as if my words would have made those images appear, and in the beginning I was very scared of it; but soon that was for me a grace and a fervor that stimulated my devotion very much. I have seen like that the most admirable scenes. (AA.I.258) 1.13 The Anarchy of the Church
There is only but one Church; the Catholic Roman Church. And when over the earth only remained but just one Catholic, he would constitute the Church, one, universal, meaning Catholic, the Church of Christ, against which the doors of hell will not prevail. The knowledge and magnificence of this Church, in which the sacraments are conserved with all their virtues and their holiness not ravished, is unfortunately a rare thing in these days, even among the priests. And it is because so many priests don’t know any longer what they are and don’t understand anymore the meaning of that word, <belong to the Church>, It is something very big, but also something impossible without the true light, without the simplicity and the purity, to live according to the faith of this holy Church. (AA.I.528) In all of them I see, even in the best among them, a frightful pride, but in none of them I see humility, simplicity, and obedience. They are terribly vain of the separation in which they live. Sometimes they speak of faith, of light, of live Christianism; but they disparage and defile the holy Church in which you only have to look for the light and the life. (AA.I.535) They place themselves above all power and of all ecclesiastical hierarchy, and they don’t know submission or respect towards the spiritual authority. In their presumption, they pretend to know it all better than the chiefs of the Church and even than the holy doctors. They reject the good works and, nevertheless, they desire to possess all perfection, they who, with their pretended light, don’t judge obedience as necessary, or the rules of discipline, or mortifications, or penitence. I see them always moving away more from the Church, and I see a bad future for them. (AA.I.536) No deviation leads to such disastrous consequences and it is so difficult to cure as this pride of the spirit as a result of which the sinful man pretends to reach to the supreme union with God without going through toilsome way of the penitence, without practicing even the first and the most necessary of the Christian virtues, and without any other guide than the intimate feeling and the light that gives the soul the infallible assuredness that Christ lives in it. (AA.I.536) These <illuminated>, I see them always in a certain relationship with the coming of the Antichrist, since they also, by their dealings, cooperate in the fulfillment of the mystery of iniquity. (AA.I.536) 1.14 Jesus! Jesus! Jesus!
16
Christ for us! Christ for us! (AA.I.536) They had rejected all judgment from the legitimate authority of the Church, that only she has received its power from God, that only she has the mission to be able to decide over the truth or falsehood of these types of interior manifestations; they had placed themselves above the rules of the faith and of the divine commandments, and by doing so had removed all barrier that could have preserved these unfortunates of this evil which disastrous influence they made grow like a seed of curse through all the places they passed. (AA.I.537) Jesus spoke to them of different religious sects that existed then, and which He described as whitened sepulchers and full of the worst corruption. (BB.II.180) The time of the Antichrist is not as near as some think. There will still be some precursors. I have seen in two cities doctors, from which school these precursors can come out of. (AA.II.441) …She saw the ceasing of the sacrifice in the time of the Antichrist (AA.II.492) <June 27, 1822> -I’ve had a painful task to do in a church in which, by fear of a profanation, a the Most Holy Sacrament had been closed and sealed in a pillar, and where the mass was said in secret in a cellar under the sacristy. I can’t say where this was happening: the Church was very old and I had a mortal fear that the sacrament would be exposed to any danger. Then my conductor exhorted me again to pray and to ask with all my knowledge prayers for the conversion of the sinners and, most of all, for the priests to have a firm faith; since very difficult times are getting near: the non-Catholics want through all possible means to dispute and remove everything that is of their control. The confusion will be greater each time. (AA.II.475) 1.15 Hedonism and The Cross
…silence was kept over the cross, over the sacrifice and the satisfaction, over the merit and the sin, where the events, the miracles, and the mysteries of the history of our redemption should leave way to “profound theories of the revelation”, where the man-God, to be supported, should only be presented as “the friend of men, of children, of the sinners”, where his life did not have any value except as a “teaching”, his Passion as an “example of virtue”, his death as “charity” without a reason: where everything was taken from the people who believed, the old catechism was replaced by “Biblical stories”, where the total lack of doctrine must be ensured under “an ingenuous language at the reach of all the intellects”; where the faithful were forced to “change all their books of piety”, their old formulas of prayers, and old chants for productions of modern fabrication “so bad and so impious” as those for which they were trying to replace the missal, the breviary, and the ritual. (AA.II.415) It is not only for the non-believers and God’s enemies that they battled the holy Church with all the arms of violence and the astuteness, that the cross was a lunacy and a scandal, but that, at the margin of the men who did not want to renege the faith in Jesus Christ, one would be scared of the number of those that still understood the testimony of the prince of the Apostles: “Know that you have not been chosen because of gold or silver, perishable things, but for the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without stain”.
17
2. The Great Tribulation 2.1 The Split of the Church <April 12, 1820> -I still had a vision regarding the great tribulation, in our land, as well as in faraway countries. I think I saw that they were demanding from the clergy a concession that could not be. I saw many old priests and some old Franciscans, who no longer wore the habit of their order and, most of all, a very old ecclesiastic, bitterly crying. I also saw some young ones crying with them. (AA.III.161) I saw others, among those some lukewarm, that offered themselves happily to what was asked of them. I saw the old one, who had remained faithful, submit themselves to the defense with a great affliction and close their churches. I saw many others, pious people, peasants and bourgeois, get closer to them: it was as if they were divided in two parts, a good one and a bad one. (AA.III.162) 2.2 The Rosary, Weapon of the Eschatological Battle As the propagators of the lights had a very special hate to the devotion of the rosary, the importance of this devotion was shown to me in a vision of a very deep sense. (AA.III.162) After this (the vision of the propagators of the lights, enemies of the rosary), Anne Catherine said the description of the rosary; but it was impossible for the Pilgrim (the transcriber of her visions) to reproduce her words, she herself, in the state of vigil couldn’t express very well what she had seen… The diverse Hail Mary’s were stars formed by hundreds of precious stones over which the patriarchs and Mary’s ancestors were present in scenes that were related with the preparation of the Incarnation and the Redemption. So, this rosary embraced heaven and the earth, God, nature, the history, the restoration of all things and of man by the Redeemer who has been born from Mary; and each figure, each material, each color, according to their essential meaning, was used for the realization of this work of divine art. (AA.III.162) 2.3 The Move of the Church I reached the house of Saint Peter and Saint Paul (Rome) and I saw a tenebrous world full of anguish, of confusion, and of corruption. (AA.II.413) I saw the Holy Father in a great tribulation and a great anguish in respect to the Church. (AA.II.414) I saw Saint Peter’s Church that a man carried on his shoulders; he had something Jewish in this facial features. The matter seemed very dangerous. Mary was standing over the church on the North side and extended her mantle to protect it. (AA.III.124) That little man seemed to succumb. He seemed to still be laity, and I did not know him.
18
The twelve men that I always see as new apostles should have helped him to carry his load: but they were coming very slowly. It looked as if he was going to fall under the weight of the load, then, finally, all the others arrived, got under it, and large angels came in his help. They were only the foundations and the posterior part of the Church (the choir and the altar), all the rest had been demolished by the sect and by the servers of the church themselves. (AA.III.124) They are taking the Church someplace else and it seems to me that several palaces fall fell before them as fields of wheat that are harvested. (AA.III.124) Even when there wasn’t left but one Christian, the Church would be able to triumph again. (AA.III.124) When I saw Saint Peter’s church in its state of ruin and how so many ecclesiastics worked, also them, to the work of destruction, without none of them do it openly before the others, I felt such an affliction that I screamed towards Jesus with all my strength, imploring his mercy. Then I saw before me my heavenly spouse under the form of a young man and he spoke to me for a long time. He told me, among other things, that this move of the Church from one place to another meant that she was in total decadence, but that it rested over those porters and it would rebel with their help. Even when only one Catholic Christian was left, the Church would triumph again, since it does not have its foundation in the intelligence and the advice of men. He showed me then how there had never been a lack of people praying and suffering for the Church. He made me see all that He had suffered for it, which virtue had given to the merits and to the works of the martyrs and like Him would suffer again all the unimaginable sufferings if it was possible for him to suffer again. He also showed me in numberless scenes the deplorable conduct of the Christians and of the ecclesiastics, in spheres each time bigger, extending through the entire world, including my country, later he exhorted me to persevere in the prayer and the suffering. It was an immense scene and unspeakably sad which is impossible to describe. I was also shown that now there are barely any Christians in the old sense of the term, for the same reason all the Jews that exist today are pure Pharisees, only more hardened than the old ones: there is only the town of Judith in Africa which is similar to the old Jews. This vision filled me with sadness. (AA.III.125) 2.4 The Storm I saw a great storm come from the North. It advanced in a semicircle towards the city of the high tower (Vienna) and it extended itself also towards the West. I saw faraway battles and rivers of blood in the sky above several places, and I saw infinite misfortunes and miseries get close to the Church. (AA.II.244) I have seen in this villa (Rome) terrible threats coming from the North. (AA.II.414) I saw Isaac’s sacrifice in the mountain of Calvary. The latter part of the altar was turned to the North: the patriarchs placed always the altar like that because the evil was coming from the North. (AA.II.484)
19
O city! O city (Rome)! What are you threatened of? The storm is near. Keep yourself in guard! But I hope that it remains unbreakable. (AA.III.127) I saw Rome in such a deplorable state that the least spark could light up fire everywhere. I saw Sicily in shadows, horrible, and abandoned by all of those that could flee. (AA.III.127) One day, being in an ecstasy, she exclaimed out loud and moaned: “I see the Church completely isolated and as if completely abandoned. It seemed that everyone flees from her. Everything is in a battle around her. Through all parts I see great miseries, the hate, the treason and the resentment, the conflict, the abandonment, and a total blindness. (AA.III.127) I pray fiercely for the oppressed. Over the places where some people pray, I see a light descending, in others I see heavy darkness descending. The situation is terrible. How much have I prayed! (AA.III.127) 2.5 Vienna I had the vision of a great church with a very high tower and very artistically worked, situated in a great city, close to a large river. The patron of the church was Saint Stephen and I saw close to him another saint that was martyrized after him. (AA.II.243) Close to this church, I saw many distinguished persons, among then several strangers, with aprons and stone mason trowels. They seemed to have been sent to demolish this church that was covered with chalk. All type of persons of the country joined them: there were even priests and religious. Then I saw five men in this church (the Cathedral of Vienna), three that seemed to be priests had dressed themselves of heavy and antique priestly ornaments; the other two were very young ecclesiastics that seemed called to the holy orders. It seemed to me also that they resorted to the Holy Communion and that they were destined to wake up the life of the souls. Suddenly, a flame cut the tower, it extended over the roof, and it seemed that all was going to be consumed. I was thinking then in the wide river that passed by one of the sides of the city, asking myself if the fire couldn’t be put out with its water. But the flames hurt many of the ones who had put their hand in the work of demolition: the flames caught them and the church continued standing. Nevertheless, I saw that it would not be saved until after the great storm that was getting close would pass. This fire, whose likeness was horrible, in the first place indicated a great danger, in second place a new splendor of the Church after the storm. In this country, they have already started to ruin the Church through schools who deliver incredibility. I saw a great storm come from the North. It advanced in a semicircle towards the city of the high tower and it extended itself also towards the West. I saw faraway battles and rivers of blood in the sky above several places, and I saw infinite misfortunes and miseries get close to the Church. (AA.II.245)
20
The Protestants place themselves around all parts to attack the Church. (AA.II.245) 2.6 Paris In a place, it seemed to me that it was being mined below a great city in which evil was at home. There were several devils occupied in this work. They were very well advanced and I thought that with so many and so heavy buildings, the city would collapse soon. I have always had a purpose of Paris, the impression that it should be swallowed like that: I see so many caverns underneath, but they don’t resemble the subterranean grottos of Rome with the sculptures that decorate them. (AA.II.157) 2.7 The Universal Crisis When I arrive at a country, I very often see in its capital, like a central point, the general state of this country under the form of night, of fog, of cold; I also see from very close the principal headquarters of perdition. I understand everything and see in scenes where the greatest dangers are. From this focus of corruption, I see spills and sloughs extend through the country like poisoned channels and I see in the middle of all of this pious people in prayer, the churches where the Holy Sacrament lies, the bodies of numberless saints and blessed, al the works of virtue, of humility, of faith, exert an action that smothers, that appeases, that stops the evil, that helps where it is needed. Then I have visions where the wicked as well as the good pass in front of my eyes. (AA.II.408) I see flying over certain places and certain cities, horrible apparitions that threaten them with great dangers or even with a total destruction. I see that place collapse in some way during the night; in another one, I see blood flowing to rivers in the battles fought in the sky, in the clouds. (AA.II.408) And these dangers, these punishments, I don’t see them as isolated things, but that I see them as a consequence of what is happening in other places where the sin explodes in violence and in incarnated combats, and I see sin becoming the rod that strikes the guilty. (AA.II.409) I was going across the vineyard (the dioceses) of Saint Ludger (Munich) where I found all kinds of suffering like before and I passed the vineyard of Saint Liborious (Paderborn) where I last worked and which I found on the way of improvement. I passed by the way (Prague) where Saint John Nepomucene, Saint Wenceslaus, Saint Ludmila and other saints rest. There were many saints, but among the live ones very few pious priests and it seemed to me that the good and pious persons ordinarily kept themselves hidden. I always went towards noon time (after going up to the Northeast) and would pass in front of the great city (Vienna), which is subjected to a tall tower and around which there are many avenues and neighborhoods. I left this city to the left and crossed a region of high mountains (the Austrian Alps) where there still had, here and there, many pious people, especially among those who lived dispersed: later, always going around noon time, I reached the maritime villa (Venice) where I recently saw Saint Ignatius and his companions. I also saw there a great corruption: I saw Saint Mark and other saints. I was going by the vineyard of Saint Ambrose (the dioceses of Milan). I remember many visions and of graces obtained by the intercession of Saint Ambrose, most of all the action exerted by him over Saint Augustine. I have learned many things about him and, among them, that he had known a
21
person that had, to a certain degree, the gift of recognizing relics. I had visions regarding this matter and I think that he has spoken about in in one of his writings… I reached Saints Peter and Paul’s home (Rome) and I saw a tenebrous world of anguish, of confusion, and of corruption… I saw in this city terrible threats coming from the North. 2.8 Spain Leaving there, I crossed the water (the Mediterranean), touching the islands where there is a mix of good and evil, and I found that those more isolated were happier and more luminous: then I went to the homeland of Francis Javier (Spain) because I was traveling in a western direction. I saw there large saints and I saw the country occupied by red soldiers. (AA.II.411) Its chief (Spain’s) was close to noon time after the sea. I saw this country (where the chief was) respectably quiet in comparison to the Saint Ignatius homeland where I entered afterward, and I saw a horrible state. (AA.II.414) I saw the darkness extended all around this region, over which rested a treasure of merits and graces coming from Saint Ignatius. I was in the central point of the country (Madrid). I recognize the place where, a long time before, I had seen a vision of innocents being thrown into a bonfire. (AA.II.414) Finally I saw the enemies of the interior advancing through all sides and those that stoked the fire by throwing themselves in the bonfire. (AA.II.415) I saw enormous abominations extend themselves over the country. My guide told me: “Babel is here today”. And I saw throughout the whole country a large chain of secret societies, like a work like in Babel, and I saw the chaining of these things, even the construction of the tower, in a fine lace, like a spider web, extending itself through all the places and all the history: the supreme product of this flowering was Semiramis, the diabolical woman. (AA.II.415) I saw everything that was sacred destroyed, and the impiety and the heresy irrupt. (AA.II.415) There was a threat of civil war soon and of an interior crisis that was going to destroy everything. (AA.II.415) 2.9 Ireland From this unfortunate country (Spain) I was led above the sea, approximately towards the North, to an island where Saint Patrick (Ireland) had been. There were only Catholics but they were very oppressed: nevertheless, they had relations with the Pope, but in secret. There still was a lot of good in this country because the people were united among themselves. (AA.II.416) From Saint Patrick’s island I arrived through an extension of sea (Sea of Ireland) to a great island. It was dark, foggy, and cold. I saw here and there some pious sectarian groups (…) the rest was all in a great fermentation.
22
Almost all the people was divided in two parties, and they were occupied in tenebrous and unpleasant intrigues. The most large party was the bad one: the less large had the soldiers to their orders; it wasn’t worth much either. I saw a great confusion and a battle that was coming closer, and I saw the smaller party take the power. There was in all of these abominable maneuvers: mutual treasons, all watched each other, and each one seemed to be the spy of his neighbor. On top of this country I saw a great quantity of friends of God belonging to the past times: how many holy kings, bishops, propagators of Christianism that had come from there towards Germany to work in our benefit! I saw Saint Warburg, King Edward, Edgar, and also Saint Ursula. I saw much misery in the cold and foggy country: I saw the opulence, vices, and large ships. From there, I went East, farther away in the sea, to a cold territory where I saw Saint Bridget (of Sweden), Saint Canute (king of Denmark and patron of that country), and Saint Eric (king of Sweden). This country was very quiet and poorer than the preceding, but it was also cold, foggy, and somber. I don’t know any more what I have seen and done there. Everyone was Protestant. (AA.II.417) From that place I went to an immense territory (Russia) completely tenebrous and full of wickedness, great storms came from there. The inhabitants were of an exalted pride. (AA.II.418) They built great churches and thought to have reason on their part. I saw them getting armed and that they were working all around: everything was somber and menacing. I saw Saint Basil and others there. I saw on top of the overwhelming castle’s roof, the Wicked one hanging on to the spires. (AA.II.418) Meanwhile that all of this emerges as a development of the tenebrous pictures that I see in the earth of these countries, I see the good germs that there is in them, give birth to scenes situated in a more elevated region. I see on top of each country a world of light that represents all that has been done in them by the saints, sons of those countries, the treasures of grace of the Church that they have made to descend over them by the merits of Jesus Christ. I saw above the churches that were devastated, churches flying in light, I saw the bishops and the doctors, the martyrs, the confessors, the visionaries and all the privileged of the grace that have lived there: I enter into the scenes where their miracles happened and the graces they received, and I see the visions, the revelations, the action that they exerted close by or far away, the chaining of their work, and the effects produced by them even from far away distances. I see everything that has been done, how all of that has been annihilated; and how, in everything, the blessing remains always over the ways they have traveled, how they remain always in union with their country and their flock through the intermediation of pious people that keep their memory and, particularly, their bones, there where they repose, through an intimate relationship that re-ties them, fountains of charity and of his intercession.
23
Without God’s help, so many miseries and abominations couldn’t be contemplated toward this charity and this mercy, without dying of pain for it. 2.10 Nature Mortally Wounded I saw the earth like a round surface that was covered with darkness and fog. (AA.II.158) Everything dried up and seemed to perish. I saw this with numberless details in creatures of all species, such as trees, the bushes, the plants, the flowers and the fields. It was as if the water had been taken from the springs, the fountains, the rivers and the seas, or like if she returned to its origin, to the waters that are above the firmament and around paradise. I crossed the desolated earth and I saw the rivers like thin lines, like the oceans like black abysms where you just saw some puddles of water in the center. Everything else was a thick and murky mud in which I saw enormous animals and fish trapped fighting against death. I was going sufficiently far away to be able to recognize the sea shore where I had seen before Saint Clement being drown. I also saw places and men in the saddest state of confusion and of perdition and I saw, as the earth turned more desolate and arid, the tenebrous works of men who crossed it. I saw many abominations with a great detail; I recognized Rome and I saw the Church oppressed and its decadence in the interior and in the exterior. (AA.III.158) 2.11 Fifty or Sixty Years before the Year 2000 In the center of hell there was a frightful abysm; Lucifer was thrown there loaded with chains, a thick smoke surrounded it through all parts. His destiny was regulated by a law that God himself had dictated; I saw that, fifty or sixty years, if I am not mistaken, before the year 2000, Lucifer would come out during some time from the abysm. I saw many other details that I have forgotten, other demons also should be put in liberty in a time more or less far away, with the end of tempting men and of serving as instruments of divine justice. Many of these demons must come out of the abysm in this time and others from now to a short time. (DD.452) I saw that the Apostles were sent to the greater part of the earth to bring down Satan’s power and to carry blessings, and that the regions where they operate were the ones that had been heavily poisoned by the enemy. If these countries have not persevered in the Christian faith and are now left to abandonment, that has been, as I have seen it, by a wise disposition of the Providence. They should only be blessed for the future and they remain waste land with the end that they be planted again, carry abundant fruits when the rest have remained without culture. (AA.II.340) When Jesus descended over the earth and the earth was irrigated with his Blood, the infernal potency decreased considerably, and its manifestations turned more timid. (BV.56) 3. The Twilight Glory of the Church
24
3.1 The Reconstruction of the Church Then I saw the Church being reconstructed very rapidly and more magnificent than ever. (AA.III.114) I saw a woman full of majesty advance in the great square that is in front of the Church. She kept her wide mantle over the two arms and she elevated herself softly in the air. She stopped over the dome and extended her mantle which seemed to irradiate gold over all the extension of the Church. The demolishers had taken a moment of rest, but, when they wanted to come back to work, it was absolutely impossible for them to come close to the open space because of the mantle. (AA.II.204) Later I saw, a distance away, great cohorts getting closer, ordered in a circle around the church, ones over the church, others over the earth, other in the sky. The first was composed of young men and women, the second one of married persons of all conditions among them kings and queens, the third were religious, the fourth of people of war. Before them I saw a man mounted over a white horse. The last troop was composed of bourgeois and of peasants that many of them had their foreheads marked with a red cross. (AA.III.113) I saw Saint Peter’s church: it was nude, with the exception of the choir and the main altar. Later priests and laity came from all parts of the world and rebuilt the stone walls. (AA.III.118) While at the same time prisoners and oppressed were liberated got closer and joined them. (AA.III.114) All the demolishers and the conspirators were expulsed from all the parts and were, without knowing how, united in one mass of confusion and covered with fog. They didn’t even know what they had done, or what they must do, and ran, hitting their heads among each other. When they were all united into one mass, I saw them abandon their work of demolition of the church and get lost in the diverse groups. (AA.III.114) Then I saw the Church rebuilt very quickly more magnificent than ever: because the people of all the cohorts passed the stones from one extreme of the world to another. When the groups that were farther away got closer, the one who was in the closer to the center would move away with the others. It was as if they represented diverse works of prayer and the group of soldiers, the works of war. I saw in these friends and enemies belonging to all the nations. They were simply people of war like ours (like the soldiers of her time) and dressed the same way (in uniforms). The circle they were forming was not closed, but there was towards the North a great distance empty and somber, like a precipice. I had the feeling that there was a land covered with fog. (AA.III.114) I also saw one part of this group remain behind: they didn’t want to go ahead and all had a somber look and remained together one against the others. In all these groups, I saw many people that must suffer martyrdom for Jesus: there were still there many wicked and another separation had to happen farther ahead…
25
Nevertheless I saw the church restored completely; above it, on a mountain, the Lamb of God surrounded by a group of virgins with palms in the hands, and also the five circles formed by the celestial cohorts corresponding to those of down here that belong to the earth. (AA.III.113-115) 3.2 The Spiritual War I saw big troops from several countries go towards a point and battles that were being fought everywhere. I saw in the middle of them a great black stain, like an enormous hole; those who battled around it were less large each time, like if many were falling without realizing it. During that time, I still saw in the middle of the disasters the twelve men, of which I have already spoken about, dispersed in diverse places without anything the ones from the others, receive rays of living water. I saw they all did the same work in diverse sides; that they did not know from where they had been asked to do it and when something had been done, another one was given to them to do. They were always twelve of which none had more than forty years… I saw that all received from God what had been lost and that the good went through all sides; they were all Catholics. I also saw, in the tenebrous destroyers, false prophets and people who worked against the writings of the new twelve apostles. As the forces of those who battled around the tenebrous abysm were weakening more each time, and as during the combat a whole city had disappeared, the twelve apostolic men won without ceasing a great number of supporters and from the other city (Rome) came like a luminous cone that entered the somber circle. (AA.III.159) 3.3 The Two Cities I saw in two opposite spheres, Satan’s empire and the Savior’s empire. I saw Satan’s city and a woman, the prostitute from Babylon, with her prophets and prophetess’, miracle workers, and her apostles. Everything there was rich, brilliant, magnificent, compared to the Savior’s empire. I saw there kings, emperors, magnificently dressed priests and on top of a carriage; Satan had a magnificent throne. At the same time I saw the Savior’s empire, poor and barely visible over the earth, submerged in mourning and desolation. The Church was presented to me under the features of the Virgin and under the ones of the Savior in the cross, whose semi-open side seemed to indicate to the sinner the refuge of the grace. (BB.IV.168) 3.4 Mary, Protector of the Church I saw above the church (Saint Peter’s in Rome) very reduced in size, a woman dressed majestically with a light blue mantle that situated herself farther away, wearing a crown of stars on her head. (AA.III.160) I saw a kind of great mantle that went widening constantly and that ended by embracing the whole world with its inhabitants. At the same time this symbol was for me an image of the present time, and I saw priests making holes in that mantle to look through it. (BB.III.344) I saw in a great city a church that was the smallest one, get to be the first. (AA.III.160)
26
The new apostles all gathered in the light. I think I saw myself among the first with another one that I knew. (AA.III.160) Now everything was flourishing again. I saw a new Pope, very firm; I also saw the black abysm retract more each time: at the end the moment came that a bucket of water could cover the hole. In the last place I still saw three groups or three meetings of men join the light. They had among themselves illuminated persons, and they entered in the church. Water was abundant everywhere: everything was green and bloomed. I saw churches built and convents. (AA.III.161) I also saw that help was coming at the moment of most desolation. Again I saw the Holy Virgin go up in the church and extend her mantle. When I had this last vision, I did not see the present Pope. I saw one of his successors. I saw him at the same time soft and severe. He knew how to attract the good priests and expulse the bad ones. I saw everything renovated and a church that ascended up to heaven. (AA.III.103) 3.5 Saint Michael’s Battle Already all the prior part of the church had been demolished: the only thing left standing was the Sanctuary with the Most Holy Sacrament. I was succumbed in sadness and asking myself where was that man that I had seen other times over the church to defend it, wearing a red clothing and white banner. (AA.II.203) I saw again Saint Peter’s church with its high dome. Saint Michael remained up high, full of light, wearing a red with blood raiment, and holding in the hand a great banner of war. Over the earth there was a great battle. The greens and the blues fought against the whites, and these whites who had above them a red and flaming sword, seemed to be defeated: but all ignored why they were battling. (AA.II.205) The Church was completely red with blood like the angel, and I was told that she would be washed in the blood. The longer the battle lasted, more the bloodied color was erased from the church and it turned each time more transparent. Nevertheless, the angel descended, went towards the whites, and I saw him several times in front of all his cohorts. Then they were animated of a marvelous courage without them knowing where that was coming from; it was the angel that multiplied his knocking among the enemies, who were fleeing through all the sides. Then the flaming sword that was above the victorious whites disappeared. During the battle, the enemy troops passed continually to his side and once came one very large.
27
Above the battle field, troops of saints appeared in the air: showed, indicating what had to be done; they made signs with their hands: all were different among themselves, but inspired of a same spirit and acting in the same spirit. When the angel descended from above the Church, I saw above him in the sky a great luminous cross to which the Savior was tied; from his wounds came out glowing rays that extended over the world. He was not carrying the crown of thorns, but that from all the wounds in the head glowed rays that went horizontally over the world. The rays of his hands, of the side, and of the feet had the colors of the rainbow; they were divided in very thin lines, sometimes they joined and in that way reached town, cities, homes over all the surface of the globe. I saw them by one side and by the other, sometimes far away, sometimes near, fall over diverse dying and aspired the souls that, entering in one of these colored rays, penetrated the sore of the Lord. The rays of the wound on the side divided itself over the church above it, like an abundant current and very wide. The church was completely illuminated, and I saw a great majority of the souls enter into the Lord by that current of rays. (AA.II.205) I also saw gliding over the surface of the sky a heart shining with a red light, from which came out a way of white rays that led to the sore on the side… …and another way that extended over the Church and over many countries… …these rays attracted towards them a great number of souls that, by the heart and the luminous way, entered in Jesus’ side. I was told that the heart was Mary. (AA.II.205) Then I had the vision of an immense battle. All the battlefield was covered of a great smoke: there were small forests full of soldiers where they came out continuously. It was a low place: you could see great cities far off. I saw Saint Michael descending with a large troop of angels and separate the fighters. But this won’t happen until everything seems lost. A chief will invoke Saint Michael and then the victory will descend. She ignored the time of this battle. One time she said that it happened in Italy, not far away from Rome where many antique things would be destroyed and where many new holy things (meaning unknown until then) would reappear one day. (AA.III.24) Saint Michael descended in the church (demolished with the exception of the choir and the main altar) dressed in his armor, and stopped, threatening them with his sword, several bad shepherds that wanted to enter there. He expulsed them to a dark corner where they sat, looking at each other. The part of the Church that was demolished was immediately surrounded of a quick clarity, in such a way that immediately the divine service could be celebrated perfectly. Later came from all parts of the world priests and laity who rebuilt the stone walls, since the demolishers had not been able to remove the strong stones from the foundations. (AA.III.118) 3.6 The Strong Woman I saw the daughter of the king of kings attacked and persecuted. She cried a lot because of all the blood that was going to be shed and passed her sight over the tribe of strong virgins that must combat by her side. I had a lot to do with Her and begged her to think about my country and in
28
certain places that I recommended to her. I pleaded for the priests some of her treasures, She answered me: “Yes, I have great treasures, but they are trampled”. She wore a light blue garment. (AA.III.181) Up there, I received from my conductor a new exhortation to pray myself and to encourage the whole world, as much as possible, to pray for the sinners and, in particular, for the deviant priests. Very bad times are coming, he told me. (AA.III.182) The non-Catholics will seduce many people and will look through all the imaginable means to take away everything from the Church. A great confusion will result of it. (AA.III.182) I had another vision where I saw how the army of the daughter of the king was being prepared. A multitude of people contributed to it. And what they offered consisted of prayers, in good works, in victories over themselves and in all kinds of works. All of this went from hand to hand up to heaven and there, each thing, after having passed by a particular work, turned into a piece of the armor with which the Virgin was dressed. You couldn’t stop admiring up to what point everything fitted well and it was amazing to see how each thing meant another. The Virgin was armed from head to toe. I recognized several of the persons who gave their help and with surprise saw whole establishments and great and wise important people did not provide anything, while the important parts of the armor came from the poor people and of less means. (AA.III.182) I saw the battle. The enemies were infinitely larger: but the small faithful troop defeated entire rows. During the combat the Virgin’s army was on top of the hill: I ran towards Her and recommended my country and the places for which I prayed. Her armor was somewhat strange: everything had a meaning: she wore a helmet, a shield, and breastplate. In regard to the people that fought, they looked similar to actual soldiers. It was a terrible war: at the end just a tiny troop of leaders from the good cause remained, who were victorious. (AA.III.182) 3.7 The Purification The incredibility of the time (in which Anne Catherine lived) is in its fullness: there still will be an incredible confusion; but after the storm faith will be re-established. (AA.II.132) Nevertheless, from the other side, those who were restoring put themselves to work with an incredible activity. Men came of much age, impotent, and forgotten, later many young men strong and vigorous, women, children, ecclesiastics and laity, and the building was promptly restored entirely. (AA.II.204) I saw then a new Pope come with a procession. He was younger and much more severe than the previous. He was received with great pomp. He seemed ready to consecrate the church (Saint Peter’s of Rome) but I heard a voice saying that a new consecration was not necessary, that the Most Holy Sacrament had remained there always. (AA.II.204) They must then celebrate a very solemn double feast: a universal jubilee and the restoration of the church. The Pope, before commencing the feast, had already disposed his people that threw
29
out the assembly of the faithful, without running into any opposition, a multitude of members from the high and low clergy. (AA.II.204) I saw that they left the assembly murmuring and full of anger. The Pope took to his service other persons, ecclesiastics and even laity. Then the great solemnity in the church of Saint Peter started. (AA.II.204) The men with the white aprons continued working in their demolition work without noise and very carefully, when others were not watching: they were careful and were watching. (AA.II.204-205) In the feast of the Purification, in 1822, she told me the following: I have seen, in these days, wonderful things around the Church. Saint Peter’s church was almost completely destroyed by the sect: but the works of the sect were also destroyed and everything that belonged to them, their aprons and their gear were burnt by the executioner in a square marked by infamy. It was only horse’s leather and the stench was so great that I got sick. I have seen in this vision God’s Mother work in such a way for the Church that my devotion towards Her increased even more. (AA.III.115) 3.8 The Nuptial House The Bridegroom celebrates his wedding, meaning his indissoluble union with the Church (the Spouse), as if renovating himself constantly, and to present it to God the Father pure and without blemish in all its members. He sheds unceasingly avenues of graces. But each of these graces must be taken into account and among those who receive them, only a small number will be able to find themselves in order for the rendering of accounts. If the Bridegroom of the Church did not prepare at all times instruments that will pick what others allow to loose, that make the talents that others reject be worthy, that pay the debts contracted by others. Before having manifested Himself in the flesh in the fullness of the times to conclude in his Blood the new marriage, He had, by the mystery of the Immaculate Conception, prepared Mary to be the primordial and eternally immaculate type of the Church. (AA.II.247) It has been twenty years now that my bridegroom led me to the Nuptial House and laid me over the rough bed of a bride in which I am still laying today. (AA.I.246) I was in the Nuptial House and saw a loud marriage procession arrive in several carriages. The bride, who had many men and women close to her, was a person of great stature, with a brazen semblance, and the look of a courtesan. She had on her head a crown, on the breast many jewels, three chains and three brooches of gold from which were hanging a great quantity of instruments, of figurines representing river crabs, frogs, toads, grasshoppers and also some horns, rings, whistles, etc. Her dress was scarlet. On her shoulder an owl fluttered, who spoke into her ear, on the right side as well as on the left side: it seemed to be the spirit of her family.
30
This woman, with all her court and much baggage, entered pompously in the nuptial house and expulsed all who were there. The old men and the ecclesiastics barely had time to pick up their books and their papers, all were obliged to leave, some full of horror, others full of sympathy towards the courtesan. Some went to the church, others in diverse directions, leaving in separate groups. She turned over everything that was in the house, even the table and the cups that were on top. Only the bedroom where the habits of the bride were and the hall that I saw transformed into a consecrated church to the Mother of God remained firm and intact. A remarkable thing, the courtesan, with her gear and her books with a glossy shine, and she had the smell of that brilliant beetle that smells so bad. The women that surrounded her were magnetic prophetesses: they prophesized and held her up. But this ignoble bride wanted to be married and, what is worst, with a young pious and illuminated priest. I think he was one of the twelve that I see often do important works under the influence of the Holy Spirit. He had run away from the house when he was before this woman. She made him return speaking to him with more flattering words. When he arrived, she showed him everything and wanted to put everything in his hands. He stopped for some time: but since she showed herself with him pressuring and without discretion, and she used all imaginable means to get him to take her as a woman, he took a very grave and very imposing appearance: he cursed her as well as all her dealings, as being the ones of an infamous courtesan, and he left. Then I saw everything that was with her, leave; cede the place, die, and slander. The entire Nuptial House turned somber and black in an instant, and the shining things started to decay. The woman herself, entirely decayed, fell on the earth and remained in the ground, keeping her external form: but everything in her had decayed. Then, when everything was reduced to dust and silence reigned throughout, the young priest returned and two others with him, of which one, who was an elderly man, seemed to have been sent from Rome. The elderly man planted a cross before the Nuptial House, which had turned completely black: took out something from that cross, entered the house, open the doors and windows, and it seemed that the others who were inside the house were praying, consecrating, or doing exorcisms. A great storm came which passed through the house and from it came a black smoke that went far away towards a great city in which it divided into clouds of different sizes. Regarding the House, it was again occupied by a number elected among the old inhabitants. Some of the ones who had come with the impure bride and that had been converted, also installed themselves. Everything was purified and started to prosper. The garden also returned to its primitive state. (AA.II.398)
31
I saw a great feast in the church that, after the victory, irradiated like the sun. I saw a very austere and very energetic Pope. Before the start of the feast, I saw many bishops and shepherds expulsed because of their wickedness. Then I saw, close to being fulfilled, the prayer: “Your Kingdom come”. (AA.II.209) On December 27th, Feast of Saint John Evangelist, she saw the Roman Church brilliant like a son. From her rays shined throughout the entire world: “I was told that it was related with Saint John’s Revelations, over which the different people in the Church will be receiving lights, and that light will fall over all the Church”. (AA.II.202) While the battle took place over the earth, the Church and the angel, who disappeared quickly, had turned white and luminous. The cross also vanished and in its place remained standing over the Church a woman shining with light that extended till faraway and over her a shining gold mantle. 3.9 The Renovation of the Church It was seen in the Church a reconciliation take place accompanied by testimonies of humility. I saw the bishops and shepherds get closer to one another and change their books: the sects recognized the Church, her marvelous victory and the clarity of the revelations that they had seen with their own eyes radiate over her. This clarity came the rays of the sorter that Saint John had made spring up from the lake of the mountain of the prophets. When I saw this meeting, I felt a deep impression of the proximity of the kingdom of God. I felt a splendor and a superior life manifest itself in all the nature and a holy emotion fill all the men, like in the times when the birth of the Lord was near, and I felt the closeness of the kingdom of God in such a way, that I felt forced to run to its encounter and give shouts of joy. I had the feeling of Mary’s advent in her first ancestors. I saw her stock ennobled as She was getting to the point in which this flower would be produced. I saw Mary arrive, how was it? I cannot express it; it is in the same way that I have the foreboding of getting closer to the kingdom of God. I have seen Him get closer, attracted by the burning desire of many Christians, full of humility, of love and of faith; it was the yearning that attracted him. It seemed that I saw celestial gardens, shining with light, descend from above, meet in the earth, in places that the fire was burning, and bathe everything that was under a primordial light. (…)
32
The same as in David’s lineage, the promise was preserved until its fulfillment in Mary in the fullness of the times; the same as that lineage was cared for, protected, purified until the moment in which it produced in the Holy Virgin the light of the world, in the same way, this saint of the mountain of the prophets purifies and preserves all the treasures of the creation and of the promise, as well as the meaning and the essence of each word and of each creature until the times are fulfilled. He rejects and erases everything that is false and evil; then it is such a pure current as when it comes out of the bosom of God, and it is like that, that it flows today in the entire nature. I was in the garden of the Nuptial House. The matron was still ill but, nevertheless, she put order, cleaned, and removed the debris from here and there in the garden. I saw several saints dressed of ancient priestly habits that cleaned different parts of the church and removed the spider webs. The door was open; the Church was turning each time more luminous. It was as if the owners did the work of the servants: since those who were in the Nuptial House didn’t do anything and many were unhappy. (AA.II.361) Nevertheless, there was around here a great movement. It seemed like some doubted from still entering when the church was completely put in order: but some then must be moved to the sides. (AA.II.361) While the church turned each time more beautiful and more luminous, suddenly from its bosom a beautiful clean fountain sprung up which extended through all parts a pure water like the crystal; it went out through the walls and, flowing into the garden, revived everything. (AA.II.361) To this fountain’s effusion, everything turned luminous and happier, and I saw above it a shining altar like a celestial spirit, like a manifestation, and future growth. (AA.II.361) It seemed like everything was growing in the church, walls, roofs, decorations, the body of the building, in other words, everything; and the saints continued working and the movement was each time bigger in the Nuptial House. (AA.II.361) Then I had a new vision. I saw the Holy Virgin above the church, and around her the apostles and bishops. I saw above them, great processions and solemn ceremonies. I saw great blessings given out from up high and many changes. I also saw the Pope order and regulate everything. I saw poor and simple men come forward, many were still young. I saw many ancient ecclesiastical dignitaries that, having put themselves at the service of the bad bishops, had left to oblivion the interests of the Church, drag themselves in crutches, like lame and paralytics; they were taken by two conductors and received their pardon. I saw a quantity of bad bishops, that had believed to be able to do something by themselves and who did not receive for their works the strength of Christ through the intermediation of their holy predecessors and of the Church, pushed away and replaced by others. (AA.II.492)
33
The enemies that had fled in the battle where not pursued; but they dispersed through all sides. (AA.II.240) I saw the priesthood and the religious orders renovate themselves after a long decadence. It seemed to me that a mass of pious people had emerged and that everything came out of them and developed. (AA.III.176) I saw in Saint Peter’s church, in Rome, a great feast with many lights and I saw that the Holy Father, as well as many others, has been fortified by the Holy Spirit. I also saw, in different places of the world, the light descend over the twelve men that I see so often as the new twelve disciples or prophets of the Church. (AA.II.429) 3.10 The Future Pope I saw him at the same time soft and severe. He knew how to attract the good priests and reject far away from him the bad ones. I saw everything being renovated and a church that elevated itself up to heaven. (AA.III.103) I saw a new Pope very firm. (AA.III.161) There was in the spiritual church a thanks giving feast; there was a splendid glory, a throne magnificently adorned. Saint Paul, Saint Augustine and other converted saints were there in a very special way. It was a feast in which the Triumphant Church gave thanks to God of a grace that must not come to its maturity until in the future. It was something life a future consecration. This was related with the moral change that had taken place in a man of slim condition and rather young, who one day should be a Pope. I have also seen in this vision many Christians enter the Church. They entered through the Church walls. (AA.III.177) I saw that this Pope must be severe and that he will move away from himself all the lukewarm and cold bishops. But much time still has to pass until this happens. (AA.III.177) I saw this future Pope in the church surrounded of other pious men: its related with that old priest that I saw die in Rome, a few days ago. The young man was already in the orders and it seemed like he received today (January 27, 1822) a dignity. He is not Roman, but Italian, from a place not too far from Rome, and belongs, I think, to a pious princely family. (It was the future Pope Pious XI) (AA.III.178) 3.11 The Book of the Seven Seals There was a great solemnity in the church and I saw above it a luminous cloud over which the apostles and the holy bishops descended and met in choirs above the altar. I saw Saint Augustine, Saint Ambrose and all of those that have worked much for the exaltation of the church among them. (AA.II.493) 34
It was a great solemnity; the mass was celebrated, and I saw in the center of the church an open book from which hanged three seals by the widest side and two other seal by each one of the other sides. I also saw up high the Apostle Saint John and learned that they were the revelations that he had had in Patmos. The book was situated over a desk in the choir. Before this book was opened, something happened that I have forgotten. It’s a pity that there is this lagoon in the vision. (AA.II.493) On December 27 she saw the Roman Church shining like a sun: I was told that was relevant with the Revelations of Saint John, over which several people in the church must receive lights, and this all light will fall over the Church. (AA.II.202) 3.12 The Return of the Christian Unity The Pope was not in the Church. He was hidden. (AA.II.493) I believe that those who were in the church didn’t know where he was. I didn’t know if he was praying or he was dead. But I saw that all the participants, priests, and laity, had to put their hand over a certain passage of the Gospels, and that over many of them descended, like a particular sign, a light that was transmitted by the holy apostles and the holy bishops. I also saw that several of them did that just for the form. (AA.II.493) I saw many ancient ecclesiastical dignitaries that, having put themselves at the service of the bad bishops, had left to oblivion the interests of the Church, drag themselves in crutches, like lame and paralytics; they were taken by two conductors and received their pardon. (AA.II.492) Outside, around the Church, I saw many Jews arrive that wanted to enter, but they still couldn’t do it. (AA.II.493) At the end, those who had not entered at the beginning arrived, forming a numberless multitude: but then I saw the book close suddenly, like under the impulse of a supernatural power. Far away in the background, I saw a bloody and terrible battle, and I saw, especially, an immense battle on the North side and on the West. It was a great vision very shocking. I am very sorry of having forgotten the place in the book where the finger should be placed. (AA.II.493) I knew, because of a vision that towards the end of the world, a battle will take place against the Antichrist, in the plains of Megiddo. (EE.I.234) 3.13 The Time of Peace That day Anne Catherine had a long conversation with two of her celestial visitors, Saint Francis of Sales and Saint Francis of Chantal: They were saying that the present time was very sad, but that after many tribulations, a time of peace would come in which religion would take its empire and in which there would be among men much cordiality and charity, and that then many convents would flourish in the true sense of 35
the word. I also saw an image of that far away time that I cannot describe, but I saw over the earth the night go away and love extend a new life. I had in this occasion visions of all kind over the rebirth of the religious orders. (AA.II.440) The time of the Antichrist, is not as close as some think. There will still be precursors. I have seen in two cities doctors, of the schools from which these precursors can come out of. (AA.II.441) 3.14 The New Pentecost I have seen Pentecost, since it is a feast in the Church, the communication of the Holy Spirit, throughout the entire world; it has been shown to me in different scenes, as and how it has often happened. I have also seen the new twelve apostles and their relationship with the Church. I have seen still a spiritual church being formed with many parishes united and them receiving the Holy Spirit. It was a new dawning of the Catholic Church. I have seen a great number of people receive the Holy Spirit. (AA.III.144) 3.15 The Spiritual Church I had a vision of the Holy Spirit: it was a winged figure, in a triangular surface, with an effusion of light of seven colors. I saw how this light extended over the spiritual Church floating in the air, and over those that found themselves in relationship with it. (AA.III.144) A fire will explode in the church, threatening it of a total ruin. (AA.II.244) This fire, whose look is horrible, indicated in the first place a great danger; in second place, a new splendor in the Church, after the storm. (AA.II.244) I saw over all the earth a great amount of effusions from the Spirit: sometimes it was like lightning that descended over a church; I saw the faithful in the church, and among them those who had received the grace: or I saw them by themselves in their homes or in the churches in which the light and the force reached them. This caused a great happiness in me and gave me trust, that in the middle of the always growing tribulations, the Church will not succumb, since I have seen in all the countries of the world the Holy Spirit raise instruments. Yes, I have felt that the exterior oppression that the exterior powers of this world make the Church suffers; prepare the Church to receive better an interior strength. I saw in the church of Saint Peter, in Rome, a great feast, with many lights and I saw that the Holy Father, as well as many others, was fortified in the Holy Spirit. (AA.II.429) I also saw, in different parts of the world, the light descend over the twelve men that I see oftern like twelve new apostles or prophets of the Church. (AA.II.429) 3.16 The Twelve New Apostles From the West side of this Church advanced with an infinite splendor a priestly figure: it was as if it were the Lord. Soon around him gathered twelve luminous men and around those even many
36
more. Then from the mouth of the Lord came out a small luminous body that, once outside, became bigger and bigger and with a more defined form, then, it repeated itself again, entered like the figure of a small child shining in the mouth of the twelve that surrounded the Lord, then in the mouth of the others. It was not the historical scene of the Lord preparing the supper with the disciples, as I saw it on Holy Thursday, nevertheless, what I saw made me remember it. Here all were shining and radiant; it was a divine office; it was like an ecclesiastical solemnity. I saw the ecclesiastical feast end and that was for me as if I had seen those men there that were going to wake up and encourage a new fervor in the lethargic feeling of the admirable mystery of the presence of God multiplying itself over the earth. (AA.II.425) The priests were submerged in a deep sleep and what they did seemed to me like spider webs. Through several sides the wickedness, the craftiness, and the violence took grew such that they betrayed each other. I saw some persons lose their places which were taken by others, and a whole set of chains of infamy descending from on high down towards the earth. Then I saw a group of men advancing through a great prairie that I could see far off. One of them was elevated above all the others. They were at least a hundred. I was wondering if it would be the place where our Lord fed seven thousand men. The Lord came to meet me with all his disciples and chose twelve among them. I saw how he placed his eyes from one to the other. I recognized them all: the old ones full of simplicity and the young robust with tanned skin. I also saw how He sent them far away in all directions, and followed them with his eyes in their far away journeys among the nations. And how I told myself: “Oh, what can such a small number of men do among the numberless multitude? The Lord told me approximately: “His voice is heard far away through all the sides. So, even now, few are sent; whoever they are, men and women, they can do the same. Look at the salvation that those twelve have contributed; the ones I send in your time also do it, even if they remain obscure and rejected. (AA.II.128) She saw the twelve future apostles; each one in his place. (AA.II.422) I saw the Church of Saint Peter that a small man carried over his shoulders; he had some Jewish traits in his face. The matter seemed very dangerous. Mary was standing over the church on the North side and extended Her mantle to protect it. (AA.III.124) This little man seemed as if he was going to succumb. It seemed that he was still laity, and that I did not know him. The twelve men that I always see as new apostles had to help him carry the load: but they were coming too slowly. It seemed as if he was going to fall under the weight of the load, then, finally, all of them arrived, got beneath it and numerous angels came in their help. They were only the foundations and the posterior part of the Church (the choir and the altar), the rest had been demolished by the sect and by the very servers of the church. (AA.III.124) I saw many abominations with great detail; I recognized Rome and I saw the Church oppressed and its interior and exterior decadence.
37
During that time, I saw still among the disasters the twelve men that I have spoken of; dispersed in diverse places without knowing anything ones of the others, receive rays of live water. I saw that they all did the same work in different sides; that they did not know who sent them that work and when one thing had been done, another was given to them to do. They were always twelve of which none had more than forty years. There wasn’t anything particular in their dress, but each one was dressed in the manner of their country and following the actual fashion: I saw that all received from God what had been lost and that they did good throughout; they were all Catholics. (AA.III.159) I saw also in the dark destructors false prophets and people who worked against the writings of the twelve new apostles. I also saw about one hundred women seated in a state of amazement and close to them men who magnetized them; I saw them prophesizing. (AA.III.160) 3.17 Those That Refuse the Advent The time of the martyrdom of the Holy Innocent is near! (AA.III.227) One day in the Nuptial House, Anne Catherine saw a cradle… “with images of the holy Innocent and the scene of the punishment inflicted by Herod for having wanted to suppress the advent of the Savior. I knew that these images applied to the present time, most of all, as they related with those who want to remove from the world and destroy the renovated grace of this advent. (AA.III.476) I saw the prayer, soon to be realized: “YOUR KINGDOM COME”. (AA.II.209) 3.18 Vision of the Island of the Prophecies A few weeks prior to the Christmas of 1819, Anne Catherine was led by an angel, her guide, as every year, over the high place that she called “The Mountain of the Prophets” located, as she tells us, on top of the highest peak and completely inaccessible of any mountain of Tibet. Here is the story almost entirely of the impressions she told of her extraordinary trip. It was written down by Brentano on the days of December 9th and 10th of 1819. It was just a few days later, it seems, when Anne Catherine understood the whole matter. She describes it here without commentary according to her custom: Tonight I have travelled in different directions the promised Earth, as it was in the times of Our Lord… I saw several scenes and went quickly from place to place. Leaving from Jerusalem, I advanced very far towards the Orient. I passed several times near great quantities of water and above the mountains that the Magi from the Orient had negotiated to come to Bethlehem. I went through also many inhabited countries, but I did not touch the inhabited places: the majority of the time I passed through deserts. I arrived soon to a region in which it was very cold and I was led each time higher until I reached an extremely high point; throughout the mountains, from the West to the East, there was a great route where I saw groups of men pass. There was a race of small stature, but very alive in their movements, they carried with themselves small banners; the
38
ones from the other race were of a tall stature; they were not Christians. This route was descending; my way led me up to a region of an incredible beauty. It was warm there and everything was green and fertile, there were marvelous flowers, beautiful groves and beautiful forests; a quantity of animals played around; they did not seem dangerous. This earth was not inhabited by any human creature and never had any man come around here; because from the great route you could only see clouds. I saw groups of animals similar to small deer with fine legs; they did not have horns, their skin was light brown with black spots. I also saw a stocky animal of black color similar to a pig, and later animals like male goats of great size, but more similar to the deer; they were very familiar, very fast to run: they had beautiful eyes very brilliant: I saw others similar to sheep; they were chubby, they had like a wig of wool and very thick tails: other looked like small donkeys, but spotted; great fowl with long legs that ran quickly, others similar to chickens nicely decorated, and finally a quantity of beautiful birds very small and of varied colors. All these animals played freely, as if they ignored the existence of the men. From this paradisiacal place, I went higher up and it was as if I was led through the clouds. I reached like that the summit of this high region of mountains where I saw many marvelous things. On the top of the mountain there was a great prairie and in this prairie a lake; in the lake a green island. (‌) When from the top of my tree, I passed my look over the island, I could see in its other extreme the water of the lake, but not the mountain. This water was alive and of an extraordinary cleanliness: the water crossed the island through different tributaries and spilled under the earth through several springs more or less big. In front of the narrow tongue of earth, in the green prairie, a great tent was erected extending itself in width, that seemed to be made of gray cloth; it was decorated in the interior, in the back part, with long panels of cloth of diverse colors, and covered with all kinds of painted and embroidered figures. Around the table which was in the center, there were seats of stone without back rest and with the form of cushions: they were always covered of fresh greenery. In the seat of honor located in the center, behind the table of stone which was low and in an oval form, a man surrounded of a hallo like the saints, was seated with the legs crossed, in the oriental fashion, and wrote with a reed pen over a great book. The pen was like a small branch. On the right and left sides you could see several big books and scrolls rolled in wood rods with balls in the extremes; and close to the tent there was in the earth a hole that seemed to be covered with bricks, and where a fire burned whose flame overpassed the edge. All around the place was like a beautiful green island surrounded by clouds. The sky above my head was of an inexpressible serenity. Of the sun I just saw but a semicircle of rays shining behind the clouds. This semicircle belonged to a disk that looked a lot bigger than in our world. The general appearance had something inexpressibly holy.
39
It was a solitude, but full of enchantment. When I had that spectacle under my eyes, it seemed to me that I knew and understood what it was and what all of that meant, but I felt I could not take it with me and keep this knowledge. My conductor had been at my side until that moment but, close to the tent, he turned invisible for me. Since I was considering all of this, I told myself: “What do I have to do here, and why is it necessary that a poor creature like me sees all these things?” Then the figure from inside of the tent told me: “It’s because you have a part in all of this”. This redoubled my amazement and I descended or flew towards that figure, in the tent, where he was seated, dressed as the spirits that I see dress: the figure had in his exterior and in his appearance something that remembered Saint John the Baptist or Elijah. The books and the numerous volumes that were on the floor around that figure were very ancient and very beautiful. In some of these books there were decorations and raised metal figures, for example a man holding a book in his hand. The figure told me, or made me know through other means, that these books contained everything that there was of more saints who did not come from men; she examined them, compared everything, and threw away everything that was false into the lighted fire close to the tent. He told me that he was there so no one could reach them: he was in charge of watching most of all that and keep it until with time it would come to use them. This time could have come in certain occasions; but there were always great obstacles. I asked him if he did not have the feeling of such a long wait that had been imposed on him. He answered: “In God there is no time”. He also told me that I should see all. He led me outside the tent and showed me the country that surrounded it. The tent was approximately the height of two men: it was long as from here to the church of the city: its width was approximately half his height. In the summit it had some type of knot through which the tent was suspended to a string that went up and got lost in the air, in a way I could not understand where it was tied. In the four angles there were columns that could not be embraced with the two hands. The tent was open in the front and in the sides. In the center of the table there was a book sitting of an extraordinary dimension that could be opened and closed: it seemed as if it was tied to the table. The man looked in that book to verify the preciseness. It seemed to me that there was a door under the table and that a great holy treasure, a holy thing was kept there. (…) He then showed me the surrounding area and then I did, through the length of the exterior river, the walk around the lake whose surface was perfectly levels with the island. This water that I felt running under my feet diversified itself under the mountain by many channels, and came out to the light very deep down, in the form of great and little fountains. It seemed to me that all this part of the world received from there, health and blessings: in the high part, it did not overflow anywhere. Going down in the East and through noon time, everything was green and covered with beautiful flowers: in the West and to the North, there was also greenery, but no flowers.
40
Reaching the extreme of the lake, I crossed the water without a bridge and passed to the island that I walked circling between towers. The whole floor seemed to be a bed of froth very dense and strong, it could be said that everything below as hollow: the towers came out of the froth like a natural growth… I had the feeling that the greatest treasures of humanity were kept in the towers: It seemed to me that there holy bodies rested. Between some of those towers, I saw a very strange car with four low wheels: four persons could sit well; there were two seats and in the front a small seat. This car, like everything else here, was completely covered in a green vegetation or well of a green metal. It did not have a wheel and it was adorned with sculpted figures, if well at first sight I believed there were people seated. The wheels were wide like the ones in the Roman cars. This one seemed to be to be light to be able to be pulled by men. I looked at everything with attention, because the man had told me: “You have your part her and you can take possession of it immediately”. I couldn’t understand in any way what kind of part I could have there. I asked myself: “What do I need to do with this singular car, these towers, and these books?” But I had a live impression of the holiness of the place. It was for me like if, with this water, the salvation of several times would have descended to the valleys and as if men themselves would have come to these mountains from where they had descended to sink deeper each time. I also had the feeling that celestials present were preserved, guarded, purified, and prepared beforehand for the men there. Of all of it, I had a very clear perception: but it seemed that I could not take this clarity with me: I just kept only the general impression. When I entered the tent, the man again told me again the same: “You have your part here and you can take possession of it immediately”. And since I should my inaptitude, he told me full of trust with peacefulness: “You will return soon towards me”. He did not come out of the tent while I was there, but he walked around the table and the books constantly. In the tent, I had the impression that a holy body was buried there: it seemed to me that underneath there was an underground and that a soft odor exhaled from a sacred tomb. I had the sensation that the man wasn’t always in the tent close to the books. He received me and spoke to me as if he had known me all my life and knew that I was going to arrive in that place. With the same assuredness he told me that I would return and he showed me the way down; I was going in the direction of the noon time, I was passing again through the rough part of the mountain, after through the clouds, and went down to the smiling earth where there were so many animals. I saw many small fountains coming up from the mountain, fall in cascades and run down: I also saw birds, bigger than a goose, approximately the color of the partridge, with three nails in the front and one in the back, with a tail a little down and a long neck, later other blue feathered birds, similar to the ostrich but smaller: I finally saw all the other animals. In this trip, I saw again many things and more human beings than in the first trips. I crossed a small river one time, like I have known before, that came from the lake up high: later, I follow its shores, and then I lost sight of it. Then I reached a place where poor people of diverse colors lived in slums. It seemed to me that they were captive Christians. I saw other men with dark skin coming towards them with white cloths around their heads. They were taking them food in braided baskets: they did this by extending their arm forward as if they were afraid, later they left, with a scared look, as if they had been exposed to some danger. These people lived in ruins

and dwelled in cabins of light construction. I also saw water where roses were growing with a great density and a force completely extraordinary. Then I went back close to the river: in this place, the river was very wide, full of rocks, of sand islets, and of beautiful clumps of greenery among which I zigzagged. It was the same course of water that came from the high mountain and that I had crossed higher up, when it was still smaller: a great quantity of persons with dark skins, men, women, and children, dressed in different ways, were occupied in the rocks and the islets, drinking and washing. They looked like they had come from far away. There was a way of being something that I remembered what I had seen in the border of Jordan in the Holy Land. There was also a man of great stature that seemed to be a priest. They filled with water the jugs they were carrying. I also saw many more things: I wasn’t far from the country where Saint Francis Javier was: I crossed the see passing over numberless isles. On December 22nd, Anne Catherine told the Pilgrim: I know why I went to the mountain: my book is among the writings that are on top of the table. It will be given to me so I will read the last five pages. The man seated at the table will return in his time. His car remains there as an eternal remembrance. It is on this car that he rose to this stature and the men, with great puzzlement, will see him descend over this car. It is there, in this mountain, the highest in the world and where no one can reach it, that he has gone into good shelter, when the corruption is increasing among the men, the treasures, and the sacred mysteries. The lake, the island, the towers do not exist but for these treasures to be preserved and guaranteed from all attack. It is by virtue of the water that there is in this summit that all things are refreshed and renovated. The river that descends from there and whose water is an object of such great veneration for the men I have seen, really has one virtue and fortifies them: that is why that they cherish their wines so much. All the men, all the goods have descended from that height and all that should be guaranteed of the devastation has been preserved there. The man who is on top of the mountain has known me: because I have there my part. We all know each other; we all support each other. I can’t express it well; but we are like a seed spread in the entire world. Paradise is not far away from here. I have seen before how Elijah always lies in a garden in front of paradise. On December 26th: Again I have seen the mountain of the prophets. The man who is in the tent was presenting a figure that came from heaven and glided on top of him, pages and books, and received others in its place. This spirit had a different exterior than the first. This one who floated in the air made me remember vividly Saint John. He was more agile, faster, kinder, and more delicate than the man in the tent, who had somewhat more energy, more severe, stricter, and more inflexible. The second one was related with him as the New Testament to the Old, that’s why that I would
42
happily call him John and I would call the other Elijah. It was as if Elijah presented to John revelations that had already been fulfilled and received other new ones. Up there I suddenly saw, coming out of a white cloud, a fountain similar to a water pump go up perpendicularly under the form of a ray of crystalline appearance that, in its superior extremity, divided itself in rays and in numberless drops; which again fell, forming immense cascades, up to the farthest away places of the earth: and I saw men illuminated by those rays in their homes, in the cities of diverse parts of the world. On December 27th, Feast of Saint John the Evangelist, she saw the Church of Rome shine like a sun. She talked of the rays that spread throughout the entire world: I was told that was related with the Revelations of Saint John, over which several persons in the Church must receive lights and that light will fall completely over the entire Church. I have seen a vision very different around this same theme, but I can’t reproduce well. I saw Peter’s Church and a large amount of men that worked to destroy it, but I also saw there others who were doing repairs (…) Again I saw the Church of Peter with its high dome. I saw again Saint Peter’s church with its high dome. Saint Michael remained up high, full of light, wearing a red with blood raiment, and holding in the hand a great banner of war. On earth, there was a great battle. What I saw was incommensurable, indescribable… I also saw suddenly as if the mountain of the prophets was pushed towards the cross and close to it; nevertheless, the mountain has its roots over the earth and remained united to it. It had the same appearance as in the first vision, and higher, behind it, I saw marvelous gardens completely shining in which I perceived brilliant animals and plants; I had the feeling that it was Paradise… While the battle took place over the earth, the Church and the angel, who disappeared quickly, had turned white and luminous. The cross also vanished and in its place remained standing over the Church a woman shining with light that extended till faraway and over her a shining gold mantle. It was seen in the Church a reconciliation take place accompanied by testimonies of humility.
43
I saw a great feast in the church that, after the victory, irradiated like the sun. I saw a very austere and very energetic Pope. Before the start of the feast, I saw many bishops and shepherds expulsed because of their wickedness. Then I saw, close to being fulfilled, the prayer: “Your Kingdom come”. It seemed that I saw celestial gardens, shining with light, descend from above, meet in the earth, in places that the fire was burning, and bathe everything that was under a primordial light.
