Govan Facing The Future Together! Creating a community where we care for one another

ON BOARD... The Pearce Institute “This is a House of Friendship. This is a House of Service. For Families. For Lonely Folk. For the People of Govan. For the Strangers of the World. Welcome.” The motto of The Pearce Institute3 since 1906. When Lady Pearce opened the PI lifelong learning was very much part of its purpose.

The Govan & Linthouse Church of Scotland “We wish to create a place of learning in recognition of the unique gifts given to every individual as their spiritual inheritance, where each person is both learner and teacher, where there are no barriers to entry and no limits to personal achievement. This is the fullness of life, the promise of being and doing, to which our churches are committed.” Rev Dr Moyna McGlynn.

Fablevision Fablevision is based in the "B listed" old Govan YMCA building at number 7 Water Row - now a hub for cultural sector organisations and artists. We welcome folks who want to try their hand at multi media story telling (film, performance, graphics) and celebratory events.

Galgael Trust “At GalGael, we have created a cultural anchor point around which local people are rekindling skills, community and a sense of purpose. While our boats imaginatively reconnect elder and youth.. people and place.. urban to rural.. the insider and the outsider.. old ways and new..our past to our future. They serve as a powerful metaphor for transformation.” The essence of the Galgael Trust since 1997.

The Centre for Human Ecology “Drawing on a holistic understanding of environmental and social systems, we develop practical solutions and influence new thinking. Committed to enduring, systemic change, our approach engages head, heart, and hand - integrating reason, passion, and action for a better world.” Welcome to The Centre for Human Ecology since 1972.

Studies show that greater wealth does not equal greater happiness. Govan is an area where wealth is thin on the ground and where happiness could be described as patchy. Govan Together explores ways in which, by coming together, people can enjoy higher levels of well-being and meet a range of needs in ways that don’t need much cash or cause pollution. Govan Together is the first project from the Govan Folk University. With finance from the Climate Challenge Fund, this project explores the realities and possibilities for a vibrant, locally led, creative, sustainable, Govan now. Celebrating the many canny ways in which people, and in particular the older generations, get-by and re-focusing on the

Linthouse, Elderpark and Govan Urban Planters are based in the old Fairfield Farmhouse in Elder Park. They offer a bit of space in a busy world. A mixture of fresh air, exercise, good food and good people. Learn to grow food, cook, build things and much more.

...ARE YOU?

Govan Together supports the recognition of real community resilience in Govan. Resilience is the ability to recover from knocks, to make more out of what we have, and to build strength through interdependence in the community and with the environment in which we live. “The Govan Folk University is a partnership of educational, arts, religious, community and social enterprise organisations. We come together so as to recognise and strengthen Govan as a place of learning. We aspire to reclaim the meaning of education in ways that deepen the many forms

that it can take in the community. This includes honouring our cultural values and sharing skills that are born of experience and rooted in a sense of people, place and purpose - to serve all that gives life in Govan and the wider community.” With the Govan Together project, the partners are growing new learning methods that empower local people and organisations with a deeper understanding of their rights and responsibilities in a rapidly changing world. Govan Together also supports the development of the community foodgrowing project in Elder Park and links up activities there with learning and community events. Govan Waves a Change! Good News! Resilience is in our DNA! What is it about Govan that makes it so special? What are our values? What is in the DNA of Govan's past that is precious and needs to be cherished? And what is missing, the presence of which would make a difference for our future? The inside pages illustrate last years journey of exploration and enquiry into the past and the future of Govan. Our starting point for this voyage of discovery was "The Future of our Past’ - our history, cultural heritage, the heritage of the built environment and how all of that can be harnessed

to build powerfully for the future. We also surfed the "Govan Wave of Change” - a futures enquiry gathering and supporting people's stories and expressions of transformation. Govan has been forged by her people: continuous waves of incoming Picts, Scots, Vikings, Gaels and contemporary Eastern Europeans, Africans and Asians. Each arrival brought new trades and crafts, skills and cultural values. Along the journey shared values surfaced: Community,

Roots of Resilience

Why a community garden? To be stuck in a flat with no garden detatches us further from the earth of which we are part. This detatchement often leads to illness.

The park and the gardens are part of our community environment. We can learn lots of stuff in caring for our garden that can be transferred to caring

for our community. In gardening we learn about use of our time, how to prioritise time, what needs done and when it needs done - the importance of organising and sharing our workload. Inventing ways and tools for doing things, sharing skills mentoring, meeting-up, eating healthy, exercise, making friends, befriending, telling stories, building community solidarity - and much, much, more.

family, neighbourliness, our history and cultural heritage, spirituality (in its broadest sense) and love. In our final event we discussed the idea of a Govan Charter drawn from what we discovered during the year. You'll find a draft Charter inside. Who is it for? What is it for? How is it relevant? We also discussed "what next?’ Several projects were suggested: a Govan choir, and a community shop. Others are already going forward: a market garden and the emerging Govan Folk University.

Gardening is a whole educational process - not like what happens at school, but through doing things - This by far is the quickest way to learn - and unlike school you are both student and teacher. Two things that are learned quickly in the garden: 1. Nobody knows everything. 2. We all have something to learn.
