Race: TR2011 – The Transatlantic Race 2011 Hosted by 4 yacht clubs: Royal Yacht Squadron, New York Yacht Club, Royal Ocean Racing Club Storm Trysail Club The race covers approximately 2,975 nautical miles from Newport, Rhode Island, USA to Lizard Point ,Cornwall First yacht to finish at the Lizard (elapsed time ‐ arrival time), will set the benchmark for a new racing record from Newport to Lizard Point, to be ratified by the World Speed Sailing Council. Yachts entered are a minimum length overall of 40 feet with no maximum length – largest is 289’! The 26‐boat fleet is diverse, encompassing traditional and modern cruising and racing designs and ranging in size from the Class 40s to the 289’ Perini Navi clipper sailing yacht Maltese Falcon There are 26 entries in total USA ‐ 10 teams, Germany 6, U.K. 4, China, Italy, Lithuania, Monaco, Saint Barts and South Africa, one each. The extremes of crossing the Atlantic Ocean will be experienced very differently by crews on the smallest and largest yachts competing in this adventure challenge Maltese Falcon, at 289 feet is the largest privately‐owned sailboat in the world. At the smallest end of the fleet, four Open Class 40s, which at 40 feet are specially designed for short‐handed offshore and coastal racing. The two extremes are punctuated by the fact that Maltese Falcon looks every bit the world cruiser, with stem‐to‐stern luxury incorporated into its design, while the Class 40s seem relatively stark– even dinghy‐like‐‐in comparison. But each team at either end of the spectrum has its reasons for undertaking the TR2011 challenge, and each team intends to succeed, if not win.
