Moody Blues

Opinion

Tim Higham, Founder of Higham Furniture, explains why blue is a regular choice in their kitchen designs…

The psychological effects of the colour blue are universal. Almost everyone enjoys looking into a blue sky and across a lake or the sea because there is something soothing about an expanse of blue. It appears to free the mind. In interior decorating, you can use the colour blue to create a re ective, calming atmosphere: it’s not easy to overheat emotionally and get upset or aggressive in a ‘cool’ environment and the colour blue has actually been shown to lower our blood pressure and heart rate.

Blue is one of the most beguiling colours in the history of art. Blue light has a wavelength between 380nm and 500nm, making it one of the shortest, highestenergy wavelengths. Seen from space, our planet is blue: its clear skies and vast expanses of ocean appear blue because of an optical effect known as Rayleigh scattering. When

sunlight passes through the atmosphere, the blue wavelengths are scattered more widely by the oxygen and nitrogen molecules. Van Gogh said: “Cobalt is a divine colour and there is nothing so beautiful for putting atmosphere around things...”, while for Kandinsky, it was the most spiritual colour: “The deeper it is the more it awakens the desire for the eternal.”

At Higham Furniture, we regularly use blue in our kitchens. Blue is becoming one of the most sought-after colours among our clients because it is colourful without forcing an atmosphere. It doesn’t matter how strong you go, it leaves a room to be playful and daring with dashes of Cobalt. Higham Furniture / higham.co.uk

THOMAS LEADS THE WAY Three years ago, Thomas in eld started the Foundation degree in Kitchen Design at Bucks New University. Today, he has a pass with merit, and a newfound respect for kitchen design.

Thomas infield was sponsored by lum , a brand whose parent company’s H is a major employer of apprentices in Austria. He said: really enjoyed the course, and being e posed to the many different sides of design thinking. ne lecture which really stood out was by Andreas Fabian, where he led an interpretation of design using the shapes and parts of spoons! also enjoyed a project management scheme, which included a trip to the oundhouse factory, following a kitchen from initial concept to the end installation. ne of our most challenging projects was to design the kitchen area for Frank Gehry-

designed Maggies Centre in Dundee, but it was great to be using our skills in a real-life situation. The course consists of ‘blended-learning’ online tutorials, along with bi-weekly individual Skype discussions with lecturers, and three residential weekends a year. Students are e pected to do appro imately 15 hours study a week, from September to June. The course is now open for applications for the 2017/18 year, at www.tket.co.uk As to the future for infield, he’ll be looking to put his newly-ac uired skills to good use on a day-today basis: This course is going to be very useful in my role as Test Drive co-ordinator for our Test Drive kitchen at lum in Milton eynes, where retailers and consumers can bring their plans and we create their kitchen using life-sized kitchen units, giving advice about changes and ideas.

“ My kitchen is a place of comfort and community” From my very earliest memory, the kitchen has always been the heart of the house. It was always the first room that everyone made a beeline for at the end of a day. When family came over, everyone congregated there. There is something about food that offers comfort, a social glue, a common ground, so it’s no wonder that the room where it is prepared should hold such magic. For me, the kitchen is a place of comfort and community, creativity and enjoyment, of refuge and sustenance.

They can also hover in one position to enable them to extract nectar from flowers, a feat they accomplish by flapping their wings up to 80 times a second, creating their distinctive “hum”.

A MASTERPIECE OF TECHNOLOGY Air is a compact, functional and unobtrusive hinge, fully compatible with all applications. Air incorporates three–directional adjustment with decelerated soft-closing of the door. As unique as one of nature’s masterpieces, Air has turned the aesthetic rules upside down.

Q&A / SIMON BROWNING

Q&A

“”

THIS MONTH, WE SPEAK TO SIMON BROWNING, LEAD INDUSTRIAL DESIGNER OF MIRA SHOWERS, ABOUT ART, INSPIRATION AND THE STORIES BEHIND HIS DESIGNS Previous roles: Head of Priestmangoode Design in China, and Lead Designer and Studio Manager at Tangerine Direction and Design. What made you choose a career in design? I consider myself lucky that for as long as can remember ’ve always wanted to be an industrial designer. I would describe myself as someone who tempers ualitative observation with enough uantitative evidence to make an instinctive call, which is what defines an industrial designer compared to, say a designer-maker or a product designer. have always had a passion for art and a keen interest in science, so being an industrial designer is the perfect blend of the two. What is the best part of your job? Telling stories through the products and experiences that I design. There should always be a purpose behind the way things look, feel, operate. For me, telling these stories is truly impactful and rewarding. When you take a step back and take someone who is new to your product through your journey of development, and they truly buy into it, then it’s a really rewarding process. The end user does not necessarily need to consciously perceive that story, but if it’s done well, they’ll be instinctively drawn to your product. What is the toughest part of your job? Making a meaningful story is also the toughest part of the job it should be, it’s the core

SEP MAR 2015 2017

of what designers do! Often it’s difficult to maintain the focus and clarity of thought needed when your brain wants to fire you off in interesting but tangential directions. t’s a constant process of filtering, or knowing when an avenue of investigation isn’t the right one, to ensure that you succeed. Which designer/product/ building most inspires you and why? have a great admiration for Martin Darbyshire, my old boss and Director of Tangerine Direction Design. He’s been running his own company for over 20 years and he still retains his clear sense of perspective, always able to come to a distinct point of view. think that was the first time really understood the value and necessity of that skill. And he retains that clarity of thought whilst also leading a successful business. When it comes to buildings, the Conservatory in the Barbican Centre is a fascinating place. There’s something intriguing about bleak and cold architectural spaces, but in the Conservatory, the harsh concrete is completely overgrown by plants. t’s almost as if humanity has gone away and nature has reclaimed its hold on the world, which find challenging and thought-provoking. Which have been your favourite projects so far and why? don’t think one can afford to have favourite projects whatever

Xxxxxxxx xxxxx

you’re currently working on needs to be your favourite or you can’t fully invest. That doesn’t mean ’ve enjoyed every project e ually, but believe that as a designer if you are working on a project then you have to buy into it and believe in it. That said, did get unsupervised free reign of a 20 tonne tracked e cavator for an hour once. That was pretty cool. Who or what inspires you? The synergy between artistry and sciences. Current music choices: Music is an essential component of life, but it’s hard to be specific as think conte t drives what genre I listen to. That said, I recently came across The Tedeschi Trucks Band whose funky bluesy music is pretty fun. TV programmes you never miss: Aged 12, definitely Tomorrow’s World. Now, with a 2-year-old at home it’s more likely to be Thomas the Tank Engine! Best boo you e e er read est rather than favourite is Brideshead Revisited, less for the plot than augh’s exceptionally beautiful use of language. Nothing over-the-top, the opposite in fact: the literary definition of everything you need and nothing you don’t, but with rhythm and balance. Which famous designer (past or present) would you most like to invite round for a cup of tea? Sir Kenneth Grange. Famous for having designed the ntercity

125 train, the ‘new’ ondon taxis, mixers for Kenwood and much more besides, he’s been bringing together functional benefit and elegant minimal forms since the 1 70s. n some ways I think of his design style as similar to augh’s writing: nothing super uous but still with grace and style. utside o or , hat s your passion in life? My family, of course. I also like to think ’m a skilled amateur motorcycle mechanic ’m not , so tinkering with machines at the weekend. Social media: love it or loathe it? If the former, which do you use? ’m ambivalent. ther than inked n don’t have a great level of interaction, but haven’t felt like ’m missing out. Which three words would you use to describe yourself? nstinctive, ambitious and astute. hat s the best ad i e you e e er been gi en Always sound like you know what you’re talking about.

apartments and one outside annexe residence on the land of the property. The brief for the Roundhouse team detailed the necessity to keep the interior sleek, simple and in-keeping with the church’s architecture. To create these contemporary kitchens, while still paying homage to the buildings heritage, the designer selected the Roundhouse Urbo handleless kitchen cabinetry and a myriad of Miele appliances. This modern collection was applied in a sympathetic layout for each space – ensuring it enhanced the apartments’ uni ue shapes while its minimalistic aesthetic allows visual attention to remain on the interesting architecture.

THE CHURCH’S ARCHITECTURE AFFORDED THIS APARTMENT A MYRIAD OF VISUAL ASSETS, INCLUDING INCREDIBLY HIGH CEILINGS AND STRIKING FULL LENGTH WINDOWS THAT PROVIDE ATTRACTIVE VIEWS, WHILE FLOODING THE KITCHEN IN NATURAL LIGHT

A modern Driftwood rustic oak in a mid-grey colour was used for the Urbo cabinetry. This grey hue set the tone for an overarching greyscale scheme that would run throughout the apartments – an on-trend look that interestingly juxtaposes the ancient building. In line with this modern mix, 100mm thick Pietra Sienna stone tops the cabinetry and provides a sleek worksurface that is subtly offset by the 6mm bronze mirror splashback, which provides just a touch of warmth and a homely tone. Though aesthetically stunning, the project also posed a mass of challenges for the design team, including the need to keep, and work around existing features like the stonemason’s work. These details had to be visually incorporated into each design and, in some cases, re uired the creation of new stud walls that were strategically positioned to make the most of the building’s original details and simultaneously create the best possible layout for the kitchens. d

Lighting was an essential element of this design, and it had to be carefully considered in terms of placement, to ensure obscure corners and tuckedaway nooks in the architecture were all suitably illuminated. For this, Roundhouse integrated its own LED under-cabinet lighting that emits a warm glow and ensures every space in the kitchen can be efficiently used

Since 2006, eggersmann has been busy realising the idea of manufacturing and further developing a collection of kitchens and equipment which can hardly be matched for its timelessness and minimalism. The name UNIQUE really says it all. The focus is on individuality and also exceptional and exquisite materials. A decisive and fundamental idea for this system is the homogeneity of all relevant surfaces. Front and side surfaces and also handles and working surfaces are made of just one identical material. In addition to CORIANÂŽ, various types of stone and granite as well as mineral materials can be used. Intricate details such as mitre joints are applied on fronts and side panels. INTERVIEW

Lerning Curve

OVER THREE DECADES, KITCHEN DESIGNER NEIL LERNER HAS BUILT AN ENVIABLE REPUTATION IN THE INDUSTRY. HE EXPLAINS THE THINKING BEHIND THE NEW DIRECTION FOR HIS BUSINESS AND WHY VERSATILITY IS VITAL IN AN EVER-CHANGING MARKET

O

ver the course of almost thirty years, Neil Lerner has become a well-known name in kitchen design far beyond the North London market his design studio largely serves. Blending the German kitchen style of H cker’s extensive product range with his own more bespoke tendencies to suit customers’ individual requirements, this is a business that has been built steadily over time on a foundation of recommendation and repeat business. Formerly Sales Director at Bulthaup in the UK for three years, Lerner set up his own company in 1991 from a small showroom in Marylebone and the business soon expanded to take on a second location nearby. Then, around 12 years ago, Lerner spotted a shop that was being vacated on Finchley Road. “I drove up and down this road every day and spotted that there was some work being done on the shop. I came and had a look and decided straight away that this is where we needed to be.” SEP MAR 2015 2017

New displays at the Neil Lerner showroom in Finchley Road, London

For erner’s business, location has been key. This prime spot on Finchley Road, North London – originally one shop but which for a number of years now has been joined up to a neighbouring space - is not simply busy. The road carries 600,000 vehicles each week – 31m vehicles per year – making it one of the busiest non-motorway roads in Europe. It is a TARDIS-like showroom in some respects, with a total of 10 kitchen displays concealed behind a comparatively modest-sized exterior. An early innovation for the showroom was the installation of a large, eyecatching 3m x 3m TV screen on the front of the building, attracting more attention and showing more kitchens than a single, relatively narrow

shopfront would allow. hat you don’t get here is the kind of footfall that you might have somewhere like Wigmore Street for example, which is why we put in this big D screen. t’s been so important over the past decade or so – people say ‘oh, you’re the showroom with the big screen’. The business has had a long partnership with German kitchen manufacturer Häcker, having been a solus dealer for the brand since day one. But far from simply being a place to go for anyone looking for a Häcker kitchen, Lerner has developed the Neil Lerner brand in its own right. “Estate agents and developers reference the fact that a property has a Neil erner kitchen, that’s the kind of progress we’ve made in terms of branding.”

Given that changing dynamic, Lerner believes there are many opportunities ahead. e’re making a fundamental change in the way we’re going forward. There is a shift in the market and people are becoming more discerning, wanting a different look, and we’re finding that we’re selling much higher priced kitchens than used to be the case.” In order to expand its offering, Neil Lerner has now dedicated one half of its showroom to the kitchens of Varenna, and the bedroom, dining room and living room furniture of oliform. t’s a big change for us, because we’ve always been all about Häcker, but I feel you just need to look at these things and take on board that there is a sizable part of the market that is wanting a different look – more sleek and Italian in style. e’re also getting more people asking us for bedroom and living area furniture, whether it’s dining room tables or TV areas.” “Of course, we could do all this using Häcker furniture, but we just felt we wanted to be able to offer something different, and importantly, we wanted it to look very different. People can come in and see the

difference between the Italian and German style.” Lerner added: “Our aim was to achieve a real cross-section of doors, finishes, worktops and furniture so that we can inspire our clients visually with as many potential design options as possible. ven the lighting has been carefully selected throughout the showroom to demonstrate the breadth of e pertise that we can now offer our clients to furnish their bedrooms, living rooms, dining rooms, and of course, kitchens.” There remains a strong commitment to the German kitchen offering too however. As well as the all-new oliform/ arenna displays, the Neil Lerner own brand half of the equation has also been fully re-fitted with new H cker-based displays. Lerner adds that this desire for something different stems in part from repeat customers. “Some clients are on their third or fourth kitchen from us. They say they want us to provide their new kitchen but that they want something really different, so instead of us trying to customise what we have, we felt it was the right time to also work with someone who could offer that very different look in a standard range.” Lerner is a former student at St Martins College which is where he developed his creative skills. His business nous meanwhile has been honed over the years as the business has developed. ou learn as you go. Sometimes you make mistakes – sometimes very costly ones – and you try also to learn from

Home furniture options from the oliform range

others’ mistakes. From the very early days, ’ve always known what I wanted to do with the company, and how wanted to project it, so it was then a case of finding people to work with who could help. Having the right team around you is very important. Five designers work alongside Lerner, with installations managed by a separate team within the company. ’ve always believed that designers should be able to focus on designing and selling kitchens and the tasks surrounding logistics should be dealt with by other people. Aftersales service is also a key part of the business, with a service team on hand to help customers with any queries or assistance required for their existing kitchens. Design is very important, whether you’re designing for someone looking to spend 5k, 50k or 150k, adds Lerner. “They all need to have design detailing.

Nowadays, clients are far more knowledgeable. We encourage clients to look at Pinterest for e ample, and to put all their ideas together on it. e’ve always looked to stretch clients’ boundaries, but increasingly their starting point is one of a savvy buyer who understands what they need from a kitchen.” iven erner’s long career in the industry, how does he stay creatively fresh, and help to similarly inspire his designers? “Exhibitions such as Eurocucina are very important, as are looking through magazines and keeping up to date across the board. Looking at how we can use different products in different ways is also key, such as how we can use materials like porcelain stone as a design feature rather than just a worktop. hen you look to clad walls with stone, all of a sudden it changes the whole comple ion of a kitchen project, so it’s really important

to consider new materials and how to incorporate them. t is all part of a broader outlook which Lerner believes will continue to develop and evolve over time. “There have been projects in which we have ended up designing the whole ground oor of a property, which is one of the reasons we have gone down the route of presenting a wider choice now. I think in the future we’ll be looking to be able to work on more areas in the home, and it may well be that we end up having another side to the business which would be selling couches, soft furnishings, chairs and tables. can see that happening not too far into the future. t’s not so much about moving away from being a specialist in kitchens, more just adding some additional offerings.” d

Created by El Equip Creativo, this restaurant design was based on the principles of combining opposites: man and woman; night and day; and black and white. THE BLACKBIRD, EDINBURGH

Owners Martin Luney and Colin Church undertake all their own interiors at their Edinburgh restaurant. The inspiration for the refurbishment of the bar, which had originally been conceived as a northern outpost of a Shoreditch-style bar, is New ork’s Greenwich Village. The fresh new look includes ‘swampy green’ walls, bright enough for summer, but still cosy in the winter months. A key colour is acid blue which features both indoors and out in the garden as well as a feature wall of House of

Hackney wallpaper and a nod to the tropics with banana leaves, ferns and grasses. Outside is a bespoke mural created for the bar by ent graffiti artist and illustrator Mr Doodle. The artist, who is 23 and studied illustration at Bristol University, has previously undertaken pieces for the Callooh Callay Bar, London, and MTV. CAMBRIDGE STREET KITCHEN, LONDON On the site of what was once a traditional, rather run-down pub, the Cambridge Street Kitchen in Pimlico is part of the adjoining Artist Residence hotel. Its bright and breezy style is bolstered by a selection of artworks which, in keeping with the style of the hotel (and other Artist Residence locations in Brighton, Cornwall and Oxford), is hand-picked by owners Justin and Charlotte Salisbury, adding an eclectic touch to the welcoming, homely style. Cambridge Street Kitchen / cambridgestreet.co.uk

RCR Arquitectes teamed up with sintered stone brand Neolith to create the striking colour-washed walls and surfaces at the Enigma restaurant in Barcelona. The project began with a watercolour painting on two sheets of A1 paper. The architects’ idea was to apply this painting across all the stone surfaces, creating gentle colour gradients that range from deep greens and blues to pale grey and white. Neolith used a new digital printing technique to print the patters directly on to the stone surface.

The space is completed by other unusual details, including a cloudlike ceiling of textured fabric, glazing with a wood grain effect, and chairs that look like they have been sculpted from blocks of ice. Enigma / enigmaconcept.es RCR Arquitectes / rcrarquitectes.es Neolith by TheSize / thesize.es

GIGGLING SQUID, WOKINGHAM Pranee Laurillard, co-owner of Thai restaurant brand the Giggling Squid, plays a huge role in the build and interior design of each restaurant she opens. “I work fairly organically and tend to work with the building and what ’m enjoying at the time, whilst innately knowing what’s right for the brand,” she said. n Farnham, loved the building from the start it’s lovely and old with wooden beams and red brick walls so plenty of texture. I wanted to retain these features as much as possible. ne of the first things discovered was a little old room that had been hidden, which is now our semi-private dining space. e uncovered it, and added reclaimed chandeliers to add a hint of glamour whilst also creating a nice contrast to the rustic red brick and old beams. The room now has a long waiting list.” She added that for their okingham branch, she wanted to bring a softer, more natural feel to the space so acquired some old garden gates from a reclamation yard nearby, and combined them with artificial foliage interspersed with typically Thai materials like bamboo baskets. ’m lucky enough to have a very talented Thai lady who makes me bespoke clay orchids. They look so real and beautiful, and have crept into a lot of our Giggling Squid restaurants.” “With regards to design trends, the ritish have a natural love of nature, which I think lends itself to restaurant themes and concepts there’s something very nice about bringing the outdoors in. This is certainly becoming more prevalent in our dynamic restaurant industry but I think there are still ways to approach it that are fresh and quirky.” Giggling Squid / gigglingsquid.com SEP MAR 2015 2017

Ian Haigh, of Central Design Studio, on two recent restaurant schemes designed to make people feel at home… “Our two most recent restaurant projects are both very different on paper: Salt + Pickle is a small start-up in Crystal Palace, one which we have also gone in on as investors, and Keepers in Bristol which is a hotel restaurant owned and operated by Mercure hotels, part of the Accor group. “With both though, we had the same aim which was to create a

Salt + Pickle, South London

neighbourhood restaurant that felt very natural; a space that didn’t look over-designed, and ultimately was just a great place to hang out in. Our approach is quite different to a lot of other design companies, as we care far more about how a space feels rather than just what it looks like. Creating the right atmosphere can be difficult as it involves a lot of different elements, whether it’s the lighting, or the materials you use, or the acoustics. Every sensory experience plays a part.

“Everything we do has a relaxed and informal quality to it, but we try not to follow trends if possible – something which is very difficult in the age of Pinterest and Instagram. Design now is truly global, and you do see the same inspiration in a lot of projects, whether it’s a patterned oor or a curved brass detail, and you can almost always tell which Pinterest image it comes from.” Central Design Studio / centraldesignstudio.com

Subtle Strength A NEW BASIN DESIGNED BY MENEGHELLO & PAOLELLI FOR ARBI STRIKES JUST THE RIGHT BALANCE BETWEEN ITS LIGHT APPEARANCE AND STRONG FUNCTIONALITY…

talian bathroom brand Arbi Arredobagno has won a Red Dot award for its Today washbasin collection designed by Meneghello Paolelli Associati. Today is a new washbasin collection that aims to combine concepts of strong aesthetic design, and practicality. Designers Sandro Meneghello and Marco Paolelli explained: “Today is our interpretation of how the values of a company like Arbi should be expressed. It is the expression SEP MAR 2015 2017

of our everyday life, concepts which have to coexist with those of the typical values of a bathroom clarity and uidity. This collection became the ideation of simplicity but richness at the same time, in terms of the aesthetic and functional values that we were able to add to the collection in order to make it become a part of our everyday life.” The new collection is made from a mineral composite solid surface and is characterised by the contrast between

the wideness of the bowl and the lightness of the edges, combined with an elegant and essential design. “We tried to design the basin in a way to make it integrated into the console, like a fusion between these two parts,” added Meneghello and Paolelli. “This made the collection e tremely uid and elegant at the same time, with a slight curve that slowly transforms itself into the whole washbasin structure and leaves the space for the mixer.” d

very September, London Design Festival takes over the capital with a nine-day celebration, comprising of over 400 different events, exhibitions and installations. Design Districts and Design Destinations play a key role in the Festival, curating an ambitious programme of projects across London, allowing visitors and Londoners an opportunity to experience, discover, and be inspired by world class design.

Join Co-Founder and SVP of Design at luxury bathroom and kitchen brand Waterworks for a talk on creating the perfect bathroom. Drawing on four decades of experience, Barbara Sallick will demystify the process of designing this personal space with intriguing references.

This year, London Design Festival also announces the addition of Design Routes to the 2017 programme, including Notting Hill, Maker Mile, and South East Makers Club. Ben Evans, Director London Design Festival, said: “Each of the nine districts allows visitors to immerse themselves in the design personality of each area. They are all distinct and different and re ect how varied ondon’s design story is. Above all they offer an abundance of choice. You can discover

a lot of new design all within a short walking distance of each other.” We did some digging through the expansive schedule of events taking place this month to unearth a few important destinations to put on your planner if you are attending this year’s festival...

Each year 100% Design adopts a theme, which is re ected across its installations, features, talks programmes and show design. Overseeing the implementation of the theme across these areas is newly appointed Content Editor, design

journalist Ma Fraser. 2017’s theme is Elements, which considers everything from the fundamentals of design to the component parts that make up a product, the materials used to the stories and processes of development. The show’s ‘Talks with 100 Design’ presents an agenda-setting programme exploring trends in contemporary practice as well as the future of design, while a second programme focussed on professional development takes place in The Forum. For this year’s edition, the show hosts Dealer Day, a professional programme of networking, seminars and talks for this in uential design community.

There is also plenty of attention on UK product launches from a wide range of brands and designers. The show comprises five distinct sections – interiors, workplace, kitchens & bathrooms, design & build, and emerging brands – providing a broad view on new products and ideas across sectors. Brands exhibiting within the kitchens & bathrooms section include Antoniolupi, Foursteel, Grange Design, JIS Europe, Kaldewei, Smeg, IDS, Kung Sauna and Porcelain Tiles.

An open-plan layout allowed the owners to create their desired contemporary aesthetic, while crafting a practical space for entertaining and placing an emphasis on the room’s status as ‘hub of the home’

SEP 2017

A

ustralian firm Architect Prineas was tasked to re-work the footprint of this characterful 1930s bungalow. The challenge with this project came in two parts a strict budget and a brief detailing that the e tension should avoid compromising the character of the original home. Thanks to the property’s sunny ower North Shore, Sydney, location the company was able to propose a rear addition to the bungalow that is connected through the use of a glazed glass link.

and is enhanced through the e terior monochromatic colour scheme.

To ensure the e tension matched the original property, the team e plored a variety of simple manipulations that would adjust the roof’s shape and introduce additional light into the renovated part of the house. Double height roof forms were opted for, with a series of integrated large windows and an overarching angular structure that adds a contemporary appeal to the property

As with many contemporary kitchens, this scheme adopts an open-plan layout and crafts a large, open and breathable space. Suiting the current trend for indoor-outdoor kitchens, the roof was fitted with oversized dormer windows that highlight views of the treetops, alongside glass sliding doors which open out onto the wooden deck and garden, making the most of the lush, leafy surroundings. d

Continuing the simple black and white colour scheme throughout the property created a subtle, sophisticated look, which, with the addition of wooden furniture, was softened to suit the home environment and add a cool Scandinavian twist to the contemporary palette. olished concrete clads the interior ooring, while the capacious outside decking pulls together the monochrome and timber elements and provides an additional area for entertaining.

EXIT / LIGHTWEIGHT SOLUTION

Exit

ONE LAST THING FROM THIS MONTH'S MAGAZINE...

Amid the perpetual quest for ever more energye ient home applian es, an undergraduate and a professor from Nottingham Trent University have come up with an idea that could ensure an altogether lighter carbon footprint for washing machines. Undergraduate Dylan Knight, who is currently studying for his BSc degree in Product Design and his professor Amin Al-Habaibeh, have developed a way for washing machine companies to wash away a percentage of their carbon emissions and save the UK almost SEP 2017

45,000 tonnes of CO2 a year in transportation-related environmental impact. The design replaces the concrete block used to weight the machines during their spin cycles, with a simple plastic counterweight, that is filled with water to provide the same function. 22-year-old Knight tested the new device and found it to be just as effective as the existing concrete option. Knight said: “Concrete is actually quite bad for the environment due to the CO2 released when it’s produced. The use of concrete is also the reason why washing

machines are normally very heavy to move, but with this design, the hollow container can be left unfilled until the appliance is installed. We found it worked as good as a concrete counterweight, stopping the spinning drum from heavily vibrating the machine.” The invention – created under a live brief from design company Tochi Tech – cuts the weight of an average washing machine by 30%. This has the potential to reduce the weight of the transporting truck by 100kg and save around 8.5g of CO2 and 0.35

litres of fuel per 100km in transportation distance. Professor Al-Habaibeh said: “This sustainable solution not only reduces cost and energy needed for transportation, but also provides ergonomic and health and safety benefits to those physically handling washing machines.” d
