Editor’s Corner The Last 300Years WereYears Of Human Progress We tend to hear bad news first and foremost and some people say bad news travels fast, or bad news sells. But what if you found out that things are much better than what you hear? People are living longer and the world as a whole is much more prosperous than it was even a century ago.The data doesn’t lie so here are a few positives to chew on: Homicides 30 years ago were at a rate of 8.5 per 100,000, 11% of us fell below the poverty line and we emitted 20 million tons of sulfur dioxide and 34.5 million tons of particulate matter into our atmosphere.Today the numbers tell us we are doing much better and we are much cleaner; homicide is down to 5.3 per 100,000, with 3% of us falling below the poverty line. We emit 4 million tons of sulfur and 20.6 million tons of particulates and this is with us driving more and growing our manufacturing.

There are many more people using the Internet and global communication and learning in general is faster than ever. We tend to hear negative things from the media and we can’t help but think the world is a shooting gallery, but the inverse is true today. We live much longer, our quality of life has tripled, and we are less likely to be in an unsafe environment because of the enlightened race of human beings. Over the past century, Americans have become 96% less likely to be killed in an auto accident, 88% less likely to be mowed down on the sidewalk, 99% less likely to die in a plane crash, 59% less likely to fall to their deaths, 92% less likely to die by fire, 90% less likely to drown, 92% less likely to be asphyxiated, and 95% less likely to be killed on the job. Life in other rich countries is even safer, and life in poorer countries will get safer as they get richer.

As people are getting healthier, richer, safer and freer, they are also becoming more knowledgeable and smarter.Two centuries ago, 12% of the world could read and write; today 85% can. Literacy and education will soon be universal, for girls as well as for boys.

The schooling, together with health and wealth, is literally making us smarter—by 30 IQ points, or two standard deviations above our ancestors.

As societies become wealthier and better educated, they raise their sights to the entire planet. Since the dawn of the environmental movement in the 1970s, the world has emitted fewer pollutants, cleared fewer forests, spilled less oil, set aside more preserves, extinguished fewer species, saved the ozone layer and may have peaked in its consumption of oil, farmland, timber, cars and perhaps even coal.

How should we think about future progress? The advances of the past are no guarantee that progress will continue; but as long as we move forward with an open mind and realize we are not the only ones on this planet we should continue our progress. Eventually there will be no poverty, a cleaner planet and atmosphere, with longer higher quality of life.

We need to each do our part, spread the good news and squelch the doom Sayers with factual data. Life is good.

Amazon Patents A Wristband That Can Track Workers (Careful, Fidgeters)

What may sound like dystopian fiction could become a reality for Amazon warehouse workers around the world.The company has won two patents for such a wristband, though it was unclear if Amazon planned to actually manufacture the tracking device and have employees wear it.

The online retail giant, which plans to build a second headquarters and recently shortlisted 20 potential host cities for it, has also been known to experiment in-house with new technology before selling it worldwide.

But the patent disclosure goes to the heart about a global debate about privacy and security. Amazon already has a reputation for a workplace culture that thrives on a hardhitting management style, and has experimented with how far it can push white-collar workers in order to reach its delivery targets.

Privacy advocates, however, note that a lot can go wrong even with everyday tracking technology. Last month, the tech industry was jolted by the discovery that Strava, a fitness app that allows users to track their activities and compare their performance with other people running or cycling in the same places, had unwittingly highlighted the locations of U.S. military bases and the movements of their personnel in Iraq and Syria.

In theory, Amazon’s proposed technology would emit ultrasonic sound pulses and radio transmissions to track where an employee’s hands were in relation to inventory bins, and provide “haptic feedback” to steer the worker toward the correct bin.

With guidance from a wristband, workers could fill orders faster.

The patents, filed in 2016, were published in September, and were initially reported by GeekWire last month.

Critics say such wristbands raise concerns about privacy and would add a new layer of surveillance to the workplace, and that the use of the devices could result in employees being treated more like robots than humans.

Current and former Amazon employees said the company already used similar tracking technology in its warehouses and said they would not be surprised if it put the patents into practice.

Max Crawford, a former Amazon warehouse worker in Britain, said in a phone interview, “After a year working on the floor, I felt like I had become a version of the robots I was working with.”

He described having to process hundreds of items in an hour — a pace so extreme that one day, he said, he fell over from dizziness.

“There was no time to go to the loo,” he said, using the British slang for toilet. “You had to process the items in seconds and then move on. If you didn’t meet targets, you were fired.”

He worked back and forth at two Amazon warehouses for more than two years and then quit in 2015 because of health concerns, he said: “I got burned out.”

Crawford agreed that the wristbands might save some time and labor, but he said the tracking was “stalkerish” and feared that workers might be unfairly scrutinized if their hands were found to be “in the wrong place at the wrong time.”

“They want to turn people into machines,” he said. “The robotic technology isn’t up to scratch yet, so until it is, they will use human robots.”

Many companies file patents for products that never see the light of day.

And Amazon would not be the first employer to push boundaries in the search for a more efficient, speedy workforce.

Companies are increasingly introducing artificial intelligence into the workplace to help with productivity, and technology is often used to monitor employee whereabouts.

One company in London is developing artificial intelligence systems to flag unusual workplace behavior, while another used a messaging application to track its employees.

In Wisconsin, a technology company called Three Square Market offered employees an opportunity to have microchips implanted under their skin, it said, to be able to use its services seamlessly.

The tool spindles are larger than previous Hydromat spindles to accommodate the heavier cuts and larger parts machined with this platform. They are designated as 55/200 units, referring to the 55mm front bearing size and a 200mm stroke at the Z axis. The units utilize HSK 50 tool holders, and they are a stout design weighing in at 536 kg total mass.This motor has dual windings and pumps out 35 Nm at low speeds and 13.2 Nm at high speeds.

President Donald Trump approved tariffs on solar cells and modules imported into the U.S., but whether they will be enough to save embattled Hillsboro manufacturer SolarWorld Americas Inc. was unclear.

Trump called for tariffs beginning at 30 percent and declining gradually to 15 percent over four years. The company had sought a 50 percent levy on imports from around the globe.

“We are still reviewing these remedies, and are hopeful they will be enough to address the import surge and to rebuild solar manufacturing in the United States,” Juergen Stein, the company’s CEO and president, said in a statement.

U.S. Senator Ron Wyden, a staunch SolarWorld ally, sounded skeptical.

“I’ll be closely studying this decision to see if it will be sufficient to level the playing field for American solar manufacturers against the flood of foreign-made solar panels,” the Oregon Democrat said in a statement.

“However, I am concerned that the administration did not follow the bipartisan International Trade Commission’s recommendations, and instead offered weaker relief.”

The Solar Energy Industries Association, a SolarWorld foe on the trade issue, criticized the administration’s decision, saying “it will ultimately cost tens of thousands of hard-working, blue-collar Americans their jobs” by raising prices and dampening solar growth.

SolarWorld Americas is the largest U.S. maker of solar panels and the last asset remaining in SolarWorld AG after the German company’s May bankruptcy. German media reported last month that 15 parties were interested in bidding on it — but were awaiting the Trump decision.

SolarWorld joined bankrupt Georgia manufacturer Suniva Inc. in the trade case last May, and in September U.S. trade regulators found that the companies were being seriously harmed by cheap imports, mostly from Chinese companies, often operating through various Asian countries to avoid existing tariffs on products from China.

In October, Stein told the Business Journal that SolarWorld could potentially double its production capacity in Hillsboro and grow its workforce to more than 1,000 employees should it succeed in winning tariffs on imports.

But the broader solar industry fiercely opposed imposing tariffs, and found allies in free-trade advocates and environmentalists.

“President Trump just placed a huge and unnecessary hurdle in front of an industry that’s hitting its stride,” Kevin Steinberger, policy analyst at the Natural Resources Defense Council, said in a statement Monday.

“This shortsighted and counterproductive decision couldn’t come at

a worse time. We can’t afford to handicap such a critical resource for powering America’s clean energy economy.”

GTM Research estimated that the tariffs would “increase solar panel costs by 10 to 12 cents per watt,” Greentech Media reported, which would trim the solar market by 8.3 percent.

TheTrump remedy excludes the first 2.5 gigawatts of imports each year, less than a quarter of the estimated 11.8 gigawatts installed in the U.S. in 2017.

In a fact sheet, the U.S. Trade Representative focused on China, although the tariffs apply globally.

“China’s industrial planning has included a focus on increasing Chinese capacity and production of solar cells and modules, using state incentives, subsidies, and tariffs to dominate the global supply chain,” the trade representative said, adding that China produces 60 percent of the world’s solar cells and 71 percent of panels.

In a news release, the trade representative said it would “engage in discussions among interested parties that could lead to positive resolution of the separate antidumping and countervailing duty measures currently imposed on Chinese solar products and U.S. polysilicon.”

China responded to the earlier round of U.S. tariffs, ordered in a case also brought by SolarWorld, with tariffs on U.S. polysilicon, the material used to make solar cells, which are connected together to make panels.

“We will work with the U.S. government to implement these remedies, including future negotiations, in the strongest way possible to benefit solar manufacturing and its thousands of American workers to ensure that U.S. solar manufacturing is world-class competitive for the long term,” SolarWorld’s Stein said. Olympia Lawmakers Renew Push For Statewide Tax Cut For Manufacturers Lawmakers in Olympia have introduced a bill in the state Legislature as part of a renewed push to secure tax cuts for manufacturing companies statewide.

Washington state Senate Bill 6542, a bipartisan effort sponsored by Republican Sen. Michael Baumgartner, R-Spokane, and involving Sen. Mark Mullet, D-Issaquah, proposes a 40 percent reduction in business and occupation taxes for manufacturers.

Others backing the effort include Sens. Joe Fain, R-Auburn, and Lynda Wilson, R-Vancouver.

Their legislation, if eventually approved, would phase in B&O tax reductions of 10 percent per year over a four year period, cutting the current tax rate from 0.484 percent to 0.2904 percent, Baumgartner says.

That would give manufacturing businesses parity with the manufacturing tax rate paid by Boeing and other aerospace businesses, the lawmakers argue.

“Small businesses are the backbone of our economy. We need to give David the same tax rate as Goliath,” Baumgartner said in a news release.

The lawmakers contend that manufacturing employment is the only sector in this state with job losses in the 21st century.“Manufacturing jobs are critical to helping rural and suburban areas experience some of the same economic success urban communities have seen in recent years,” Braun said.

Makers of durable goods increased payrolls by 18,000 jobs, according to a breakdown by industry sector issued by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. The non-durable goods sector lost 3000 jobs.

Within durable goods, the major gainers were transportation equipment, up 5700 jobs, and machinery, up 5400.

However, one part of the transportation category — motorized vehicle and parts — lost 300 jobs.

Other durable goods categories posting job gains included fabricated metal products (up 3100) and non-metallic mineral products (up 1900).

Intel has been intensely interested in augmented and virtual reality headsets for years. In mid-2015, the company acquired Canadian augmented reality startup Recon Instruments, makers of a line of Internet-connected glasses for athletes and industrial workers.

The following year, Intel CEO Brian Krzanich unveiled a standalone virtual reality headset called Project Alloy.

But Intel scrapped both projects last year, reportedly rolling the remaining members of the Recon Instruments team into Vaunt.

Santa Clara-based Intel Corp. is wrapping up development on its latest generation of augmented reality glasses, internally codenamed “Superlite,” and is now looking for a partner to help bring the product to market, Bloomberg reports, citing unnamed sources.

The chipmaker values the new division, calledVaunt, at as much as $350 million, sources told Bloomberg. Intel would reportedly like to sell a majority stake in the business to a company that can help design, market and sell the product to customers.

New Data Suggests Waymo Is King Of Autonomous Cars, With GM Making Big Strides Alphabet self-driving car spinoff Waymo continues to lead the pack in autonomous car testing in California, completing some 352,000 miles on testing on public roads in 2017, according to new data out this week from the California Department of Motor Vehicles.

Not only did Waymo complete more than twice as many miles of public road tests than its next closest competitor, General Motors Co., it also led in safety.

Waymo’s fleet of 75 test cars collectively traveled around 960 miles per day in 2017. Safety drivers inside those cars were forced to take over control of the car just 63 times last year, meaning the cars traveled around 5,595 miles per safety disengagement, according to the DMV data.

That track record sharply contrasts with Mercedes-Benz, which tested three autonomous cars on California’s roads in 2017, driving a total of 1,087 miles. But the data suggests those miles were fraught with problems — with safety drivers taking over control of their cars 842 times, or roughly once every 1.3 miles.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk says he’s “dying to build” an all-electric pickup truck, and hopes to have one in production after building the Model Y, the company’s forthcoming compact SUV crossover.

“I promise that we will make a pickup truck right after Model Y,” Musk tweeted, responding to a request from the Vancouver Seed Bank. “Have had the core design/engineering elements in my mind for almost 5 years. Am dying to build it.”

Pressing for details, one Twitter user asked how the new truck would compare to the Ford F-150.

“Similar total size,” Musk responded. “Maybe slightly bigger to account for a really gamechanging (I think) feature I’d like to add.”

Automakers sold an estimated 916,000 pickup trucks in the U.S. in N o v e m b e r, compared to around 481,000 cars.

The F-150 has been A m e r i c a ’s best-selling vehicle since the 1980s, routinely selling more than 70,000 trucks per month.

The company sells three cars, the Model S, Model X and Model 3, and last quarter produced a little over 275 cars per day. By comparison, GM produces more than 8,100 cars per day.

FABRICATION

Tesla has promised to produce five additional vehicles: the Semi, the Roadster, Model Y, a pickup truck, and a small, selfdriving public bus.

Tesla says its new all-electric roadster will be the fastest production car in the world.

To g a i n widespread adoption, the Semi will require a national network of “Megacharger” stations to be built, and the bus will require regulatory approvals that don’t yet exist for autonomous public transportation. On top of that, Tesla is also tackling the residential solar and energy storage market.

It remains unclear how far along the pickup truck is in development, or when it might begin selling to the public.

Ford is developing a gas-electric hybrid version of the F-150, despite evidence suggesting pickup truck owners are the least likely consumers in America to care about fuel efficiency, let alone electrification, Bloomberg reports.

The workforce at the plant has swelled to 10,000 as Tesla ramps up production on the Model 3.

Five-Year-Old Boy 3D Prints Prosthetic Hands for Others in Need Five years ago, when Cameron Haight was bor n, it was discovered that he had Amniotic Band Syndrome, which caused his fingers and toes to be webbed, deformed, and a few to be amputated. Now five years old, Cameron is doing just fine with his limb differences – and he’s giving a lot of his own time and energy to ensure that other kids do just fine with their own limb differences as well.

Cameron was gifted with a 3D printed hand, but after a while it broke, so he and his mother, Sarah, began 3D printing new parts to give him a working prosthetic hand again. They began 3D printing in 2016, when Cameron wanted to learn how to ride a bike, and they didn’t stop there – they continued to 3D print e-NABLE hands for other children who needed them. After a while, though, it became clear that many children needed more than the hands that could be found on the site. Kids would do fine with the hands for gross motor functions, said Sarah, but not so well with fine motor skills, such as grasping pencils, so Cameron decided to create his own design.

Cameron spent about 40 minutes on the drawing of his design, then he and his mother tweaked it over a couple of days and transferred it into design software; the whole process took about a week. Cameron named the design the Invention Tool 5000, because “you use your imagination to do different things with it” and it’s “like a tool because it helps kids without hands do things easier.”The 5000 part is because he is five years old; he was clear that he didn’t want the tool to be called the Invention Tool 3000, lest anyone think he is only three.

The tool can be used for more than holding a pencil – it can also hold a cell phone, scissors, kitchen tools, and even a Nerf gun. Cameron plans to try it as a swimming paddle when the pool opens up.

“Cam absolutely loves 3D design, there are some days where he talks about 3D printing nonstop and then other days when he’s a normal kid who just wants to play in the dirt,” said Sarah. “We are now up to 44 devices we have printed, assembled and shipped. We have another six kids and one adult on the waiting list who we are going back and forth getting measurements for and confirming final details before getting started on their custom devices.”

The Haights have set up a non-profit called Different Heroes to help raise money for their 3D printed hands as well as to support people with limb differences in other ways. Efficiency, Connectivity, Thermal Management Drive Aircraft Development

By James Sherman, Technical Conference Developer at SAE International As commercial air transportation has matured and the latest generation of airplanes, such as the B757, A350, 737 Max, A320neo, and C-Series are now in production, airframe manufacturers are focusing on designing more efficiency and comfort features into the next generation of aircraft – better connectivity, lower fuel consumption, and better control.

Introducing better connectivity, not only for passengers to access, but for airlines and maintenance technicians to increase the availability of the airplane and accuracy/timeliness of maintenance. New network architectures, processing platforms, and supporting infrastructure, both on board and off, will require airframers and suppliers to work together in unprecedented ways.

Form/fit/function architectures that meet maximum size/weight/power standards will not be a sufficient way forward. Integrated design systems, front-to-back verification/validation systems, that encourage real-time design changes that are communicated to all the necessary stakeholders A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST •

will be required, and that means the infrastructure and tool providers will have to continue to work hard to meet these requirements.

With the increase in total bandwidth requirements, network architectures will need to be modernized, and will likely stray from proprietary or aerospace-unique protocols to adaptions of commercial/consumer technologies.

Using more widely available networks adds risk: The security of the system could be more easily compromised, and that deterministic data flow is not guaranteed without careful planning and design.

These challenges are already being addressed in various versions of the Ethernet standards, including fiberoptic and wireless communications between flight critical systems, and maintenance interfaces.

To meet the increased demand for higher airplane efficiency, a moreelectric approach has been increasingly used to achieve reduced overall power consumption. This approach allows for an on-demand approach, utilizing only the systems that need to be active when they need to be active. This has led the latest generation of airliners to included power generation capabilities that are large enough to power small neighborhoods, on the order of 1.5 milliwatts.

All this electrical power requires new architectures and systems to generate, manage, and control the flow of electricity throughout the airplane, including transmission and storage of energy. There are more benefits that will be realized by having additional electrical power available, such as unpowered taxiing, self-power at the gate, and electric de-icing.

Flying Taxi Projects Get A Lift In San Jose, Santa Cruz — But You Can’t Book One Yet

It may still be a while before you can fly above Silicon Valley traffic in an air taxi, but two businesses wo r k i n g t o make that h a p p e n

Santa Cruz-based startup Joby Aviation Inc. said it raised $100 million and did a demo flight for a pair of Bloomberg reporters.

This being Silicon Valley, the engineers reportedly have named the prototype after a woman several of them dated named Rachel.

Boeing and Airbus, unicor ns like Uber and smaller startups like Kitty Hawk, which is owned by Google co-founder and Alphabet CEO Larry Page.

Intel Corp. is also backing another on in Germany by a company called Volocopter.

Joby founder JoeBen Bevirt told the Santa Cruz Sentinel that he plans to use the funds he just raised to add 100 engineers to his team of 120 employees.

Aerospace giant Airbus, meanwhile, said its San Jose-based A³ lab successfully flew its own electric-powered prototype, called Vahana, in Oregon.

The Series By round was led by Intel Capital and included new strategic investors EDBI, JetBlue Technology Ventures and Toyota AI Ventures. Other new investors include Allen & Company, AME Cloud Ventures, and Ron Conway, who joined existing investors Capricorn Investment Group, 8VC, Sky Dayton and Pinterest cofounder Paul Sciarra.

A³ execs made no claims about cost but said they are moving fast.

2017. Without being retrofitted, these aircraft would become “Concurrency Orphans,” airplanes left behind in the acquisition cycle after the services purchased them in haste before finishing the development process.

Left unsaid so far is what will become of the 81 F-35s purchased by the Marine Corps and Navy during that same period. If they are left in their current state, nearly 200 F-35s might permanently remain unready for combat because the Pentagon would rather buy new aircraft than upgrade the ones the American people have already paid for. What makes this particularly galling is the aircraft that would be left behind by such a scheme were the most expensive F-35s purchased so far.

When the tab for all the aircraft purchased in an immature state is added up, the total comes to nearly $40 billion. That is a lot of money to spend on training jets and aircraft that will simply be stripped for spare parts.

Broadcom Ups Its Offer To Buy Qualcomm To $121 Billion

San Jose-based tech giant Broadcom is raising its offer to buy Qualcomm to $121 billion, calling the deal its last and best offer for the embattled chipmaker.

Previously, Broadcom had offered Qualcomm investors $60 per share in cash, and $10 per share in Broadcom stock, in a deal estimated at around $103 billion. More recently, Broadcom upped the offer to $60 per share in cash, and $22 per share in Broadcom stock.

Unlike its peers, Qualcomm struggled to make gains on Wall Street for much of the last year. The company is locked in a billion-dollar lawsuit with Apple over licensing fees, and investors worry that Apple could be cutting Qualcomm’s chips out of forthcoming versions of the iPhone.

The payout will be the largest in Boeing’s 101-year year history, the Chicago-based jet maker said. Boeing paid $169.7 million in bonuses to Washington state workers last year.

Employees will see their bonuses in paychecks later this month and in March. Boeing said it expects much of the nearly $600 million will be injected into the Washington state economy as its employees buy new cars or trucks, launch home renovation projects and take trips to celebrate.

The payouts reward employees for helping deliver 763 commercial airplanes to customers and setting new performance records during 2017, Boeing Commercial Airplanes President and CEO Kevin McAllister told employees Tuesday morning.

Boeing said it delivered more commercial airplanes than any other manufacturer for the sixth consecutive year, thanks to higher 737 and 787 jet production. Boeing workers at Renton’s 737 factory delivered 61 jets to airline customers in December alone, company data showed.

Former Intel Corp. President Renee Jameslast month took the wraps off of a chip company she has been stealthily working on for the past three years.

James said she didn’t want to talk about Santa Clara-based Ampere Computing Inc. until after its chips were being tested, as they apparently are now by Oracle Corp., Microsoft Corp., and Lenovo.

Ampere’s chips are designed for use in corporate data centers — an area Intel currently dominates — and reportedly boast high memory performance and substantially lower power consumption and total cost of ownership than other offerings on the market.

Venture firms usually shy away from backing new chip companies because of the very high costs involved. So Ampere so far is backed by a single private equity investor, The Carlyle Group, which James joined in 2016 as an operating executive. Ampere isn’t saying how much money it has poured into it.

Along with its headquarters in Santa Clara, the company already has branch offices in Portland, Ore., and Taiwan and multiple chip design centers in India and Vietnam.

James has recruited employees from two of Silicon Valley’s biggest chipmakers — Intel and Advanced Micro Devices — to join her 300-person company.

She told Fortune that a venture investor, after hearing about her plan to launch a new chip company to go up against huge incumbents, told her “you’ve clearly lost your mind.” But, she said, “everything I ever worked on was risky — every single thing.”

fleet will total 37,978 aircraft by 2028, up from the 26,307 now in service.

Narrowbody aircraft will be the biggest beneficiary of fleet expansion, increasing from 56 percent of the fleet now to 66 percent in 2028.

That shift will happen because single-aisle jets like the Boeing 737 Max family are achieving operating costs, range and capabilities that allow them to encroach on territory enjoyed by widebodies.

Oliver Wyman Vice President and forecast study leader Tom Cooper said while airlines increasingly favor small and mid-size widebodies like Boeing’s 777 and 787 Dreamliners or Airbus’ A350, they’ll face new challenges because better airplanes are causing unexpected problems.

Newer jets like 787s and A350s have longer airframe maintenance intervals between scheduled down times.

“While this has a positive impact on airlines’ bottom lines, it causes a small problem for them keeping up their interiors,” the report said. “Whereas conventional check intervals once provided carriers a time slot to refurbish interior components — such as seats, overhead bins, and lavatories — newer, technologically advanced aircraft with extended check intervals no longer afford timely opportunities for cabin repairs.”

This can cause image problems for airlines,Worn-out interiors “may leave some passengers wondering where the new aircraft are,” the report said.

In looking at emerging trends, Oliver Wyman highlighted Illinois-based AAR Corp.’s purchase of two Canadian MRO facilities from Premier Aviation, and China’s HNA Aviation Group’s acquisition of Swiss-based SR Technics.

Lower oil prices, rising demand for travel and cheap fuel that allows airlines to delay retirements of older jets will give a massive boost to the global airplane maintenance and repair business, a new report says.

new version and hopefully Bolt, Volt, and Prius Prime sales rise higher than they did by the end of 2017. There are a couple of other plug-in hybrids with moderate sales, based on what InsideEVs somehow gathers (the companies don’t publish these figures), but until those automakers decide it’s worth their time to share plug-in sales with the public, I don’t think I will spend extra time and text on them.

One summary conclusion might be that Tesla is just awesome. But the much more important and convincing conclusion that comes to my mind is: large automakers aren’t even trying.

GM, the 2017 leader among Big Auto, couldn’t get more and 1,177 people to buy the Bolt or couldn’t produce more than that many Bolts after over one year of production — really? That’s the extent of their ability to generate consumer demand or grow production capacity for January 2018?

Big Auto,We Have A Problem — US Electric Car Sales Report First of all, let’s get the obvious but important note out of the way: I don’t actually know how manyTesla Model 3’s were produced and delivered in January, nor do I know the numbers for the Model S or Model X.That said, the estimates (especially for the Model S and Model X) are based on many pieces of information, including previous guidance from Tesla, and I’ve seldom felt a need to go back and revise monthly estimates once official Tesla numbers have come out. That said, even Tesla’s official numbers don’t indicate US sales (Tesla only releases global sales numbers) and statements about regional split have been few and vague in the past year or two. Of course, in the case of the Model 3, I will probably revise my figures if Tesla shares January Model 3 deliveries soon, and sales could easily be +/- 1000. Nonetheless, the general points of this month’s US electric car sales report would be the same even if Model 3 deliveries totaled 2,000, and the general point is expected to get more obvious in the coming months, so read on.

Looking at the US sales of top electric cars (including plug-in hybrids), one thing stands out in January: Tesla dominates.This is unlikely to change anytime soon. Though, hopefully Nissan LEAF sales surge with the A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST •

And that’s the top of the pack.The Nissan LEAF, of course, is in transition — but let’s be honest, how many people would absolutely slam Tesla if it went a few months between model years of one of its vehicles without the ability to sell more than 100 or so of them? How would the market respond if a more popular gasoline model had such a period of limbo? Even so, the LEAF’s absurdly low numbers are now on par with Volkswagen e-Golf sales and Audi A3 e-tron sales — indicating just how poorly their electric efforts are going … or just how effectively their efforts to comply with California regulations without increasing electric car demand are going.

Audi’s A3 e-tron andVolkswagen’s e-Golf are basically turning into a joke.

They are being sold to a rather tiny number of buyers (almost entirely in California, I presume) because they either aren’t competitive with the options consumers are cross-shopping (like the Tesla Model 3, Nissan LEAF, and Volkswagen Golf), consumers aren’t really aware of them, and/or the automakers aren’t actually willing and able to produce decent numbers of them. In most markets, these models aren’t available at all.

Big Auto is trying so little to market electric vehicles and get production capacity up to scale that I have to say I’m feeling more frustrated with them now than 4 years ago. As Court aptly said, they’re giving Tesla a free pass — which, as much as many critics of Tesla “fanboys” don’t seem

to get, is not what we want. Like Elon Musk himself, we want Big Auto to compete, want there to be choice on the market, want more genuine effort to transition to clean, zero-emissions, instant-torque, domesticenergy electric vehicles.

I’ve long thought BMW had some of the best potential to electrify, and faced some of the most dangerous loss in market share if it didn’t, so I was disappointed when it went the way of plug-in hybrids with tiny batteries (taking away much of the benefit of electric cars) instead of bringing to market more genuine from-the-ground-up electric cars. Even so, it has potential with this approach if it pushes it — and the company will hopefully transition to greater and greater electrification in the next 3–5 years. From BMW’s own sales press release: “Most notably, the new BMW 5 Series showed strong growth for the seventh straight month, with 2,456 vehicles sold – nearly 10 percent of which were the BMW 530e iPerformance plug-in hybrid electric variant.”That’s right, the fairly fresh BMW 530e is approaching 10% of model sales (compared to ~1% market share that all plug-in cars have on the US market). Imagine if the 530e was available in more than the limited markets where I’m seeing it.

Imagine if BMW really marketed the electric benefits. Imagine if BMW had an i5 on the market that embarrassed the 5-Series.

The next line of BMW’s press release: “The all-new BMW X3, which came to market in November, also performed well with 2,954 vehicles sold.” Hey, cool, and where’s the electric X3?

Again, I’m highlighting BMW not because it’s at the back of the pack but because it’s actually an electric car “leader.” Other automakers have even fewer available models, do an even poorer job of marketing the electric benefits, and seem even less committed to electrifying their popular models. BMW electrified vehicles are actually above 5% of the company’s total US sales — best on the US market aside from Tesla. The company proudly adds: “Electric and plug-in hybr id electric vehicles sales totaled 1,145 vehicles, accounting for 5.2 percent of BMW Group vehicles sales in January.

BMW currently offers six electrified models in the U.S., including the BMW i3 and BMW i8, as well as the BMW i Performance models: BMW 330e, BMW 530e, BMW 740e and the BMW X5 xDrive 40e. MINI offers the MINI Countryman plugin-hybrid electric vehicle.”

With just 22,000 BMW Group sales in January, Tesla could potentially pass BMW this year (assuming nearly 20,000 Model 3’s producer per month at some point + a couple thousand sales each of the Model S and Model X). That seems like a daunting nightmare for BMW, but imagine if the German giant — one of the most valuable car companies in the

world — created a fully electric sub-brand that was 100% committed to electrification, partnered with Tesla on the Supercharger network, and could stimulate the hot new brand appeal Tesla has stimulated while leaving the old-timer appeal of BMW to a different demographic.

By and large, I’d say that Tesla fans want to see Big Auto sell as many electric cars asTesla — or more! Our criticism of Big Auto and exclamation of Tesla’s competitive advantages doesn’t come from a point of “Tesla fanboyism” as much as they come from a wish that Big Auto would actually try.

Until then, aside from a corporate mission or morals preference, it’s just hard to give them business looking at the products on offer and how much they pull out an electric car’s potential while addressing an electric car’s few remaining weaknesses.

In the end, of 17 top electrified models, Tesla’s three models appeared to represent approximately 58% of January sales (give or take 10%). I’d love to see the Bolt climb to 5,000–10,000 sales a month, would love to see the new LEAF hit such figures, would love to see BMW’s electrified offerings hitting 50% of BMW Group sales, but it’s just hard to imagine any of that happening.
