Editors Corner “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” Maya Angelou (1928-) When I interview business owners and their team members I get real jazzed about how passionate they are and how their level of enthusiasm fires up the rest of the team. It’s fun to write a good story about a good company that loves what they do and loves the team they work with. While I was at the manufacturing trade shows in Portland and Seattle these past months I met a lot of engineers, business owners, presidents, buyers, machinists, students, and other great people. I asked them questions; how do you like the show, are you finding what you are looking for, and what is your company having challenges finding in regard to outsourcing. I got so much feedback and I would open the magazine and show the solutions we have in the Buyers guide and I would tell them stories about particular companies and how these companies could help them. It was so enjoyable telling them stories and asking them the right questions. I met a nice older gentleman who was listening intently to one of the stories I was telling a group of people about how important U.S. manufacturing is to our nation and how thrilling and hi-tech our U.S. manufacturing is becoming. He waved 4 young men over and told them to listen to me. As I shared my zeal I asked the older gentleman questions about his business and he told me the young men accompanying him are his succession plan and he wants them to be proud and passionate about the business they will eventually take over. He told me it made him feel very proud to see his son and his nephews get excited about the new technology at the show and how they couldn’t wait to try designing with some new software they had just witnessed a demonstration on. I think these guys might forget what I said and they might forget my name, but judging from the fire in their eyes, I don’t think they will forget how they felt when walking through that show. I hope they were encouraged and felt good talking with me about how cool manufacturing really is! They all shook my hand and walked away clutching our magazine. I hope our stories in our 3 regional magazines touch you and I hope we make you feel good when we write a story on a great company. I would like to talk with you all soon and swap a few stories. Until then may you all have good health and prosper! Thank you all for being a part of the manufacturing community.

GANESH MidWest Technical Center GrandOpening The new Ganesh Machinery mid-west technical center and mac hiner y showroom will host a Grand-Opening on May 7th in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. The tech center features strong production analysis, automation and turn-key capabilities in support of challenging production applications. Ganesh offers a complete line of CNC milling and turning machines. The Ganesh Cyclone multitasking CNC lathe series is available in versions from 3 to 11-axis featuring up to 3-turrets, with 16 live tools each totaling 48-tool stations and 70mm (2-3/4”) barstock diameter. Seco Unveils Revolutionary CX1 and CX2 PCD Drills A leading provider of metalcutting solutions for milling, turning, holemaking and toolholding, Seco recently introduced the company’s new CX1 and CX2 polycrystalline diamond (PCD) drills for composite holemaking. The new diamond-tip technology eliminates issues with uncut fibers or delamination in composite machining, and has allowed the company to successfully develop the industry’s first PCD three-flute geometry (CX1) for composite drilling.

Announcements Continued Designed to offer the sharpest and strongest cutting edges currently available, the new CX1 and CX2 PCD drills use solid PCD tips.These tips can be much sharper than PCD-coated drills as the coating, when applied, wraps around the cutting edge and creates a dulling effect. Additional benefits of the new solid PCD tipped drills include high cutting speeds, long tool life, low friction, superior thermal conductivity, multiple re-sharpening capacity and high process reliability. “In composite machining, acute edge sharpness is everything as the very thin fibers that co mprise composite material are extremely difficult to cut,” said Scott Turner, Marketing Manager-Holemaking at Seco. “If left uncut, these fibers eventually lead to material fray and premature part replacement. Furthermore, a sharper cutting tool requires less stress on the material and with less stress comes a lower chance of toughness compromising delamination.” For effectively drilling through “plain” composite materials, the third flute on the CX1 provides high levels of stability in the hole as well as decreases vibrations and improves roundness. Also, the dome-shaped tip of the CX1 applies a double-angle geometry that reduces uncut fibers and delamination in composite-only applications. Grinding these highly complex types of geometries was previously impossible using conventional brazed or similar PCD techniques. Seco developed the CX2’s flat geometry drill point for the machining of stacked composite materials that incorporate layers of aluminum, titanium or stainless steel. With a PCD cap and drill point angle of 180-degrees, the CX2 provides efficient chip breaking and evacuation.This reduces the chance of metal chips damaging the hole when transitioning between layers of metal and composites and, as a result, keeps the surface finish of the composite intact. “While solid PCD-tipped drills are more expensive than PCD-coated drills,” continued Turner, “the investing makes sense when hole quality is of the utmost importance, as with aircraft components. Also, the overall return on investment for these solid-tip designs can be substantial in certain applications such as the drilling of a large number of holes. In fact, the PCD drills with the CX1 and CX2 geometries have the ability to effectively drill two to three times more holes than a PCD-coated drill.” Both the CX1 and CX2 series include a mix of dimensions for holes that range in size from 0.125” to 0.375”. Chamfers can also be incorporated into the drill designs to further increase application flexibility. Stanford and Hanyang Universities Develop New Production Method For Solar Thin Film Hanyang University in collaboration with Stanford University has succeeded in fabricating peel-and-stick thin film solar cells (TFSCs). The Si wafer is clean and reusable. Moreover, as the peeled-off TFSCs from the Si wafer are thin, light-weight, and flexible, it can be attached onto any form or shape of surface like a sticker.

Professor Dong Rip Kim of the Department of Mechanical Engineering has succeeded in fabricating peel-and-stick thin film solar cells (TFSCs) with the collaboration of Stanford team led by Professor Xiaolin Zheng.This method makes possible the overcoming of hardships related to working with traditional solar cells, namely the lack of handling, high manufacturing cost, and limited flexibility while maintaining performance. Kim is currently in charge of the Hanyang University Nanotechnology for Energy Conversion Lab. His research interests are solar cells, energy conversion devices using nanomaterials, flexible electronics, nanoelectronics, and nanosensors. Most solar cells are now fabricated on Si wafers or glass substrates. The biggest issue for commercialized solar cells is their high price. In addition, due to their fabrication on the Si wafer, the cells are rigid and heavy while being fragile. While they are recognized as one of the most crucial alternative sources of energy, such limitations have prevented wider application of solar cells. Fortunately, Kim and his colleagues devised an idea to produce a light-weight flexible solar cell on nonconventional or universal substrates that overcomes the limitations of traditional methods while maintaining performance. By doing so, Kim believed that his new cells could broaden the application spectrum of solar cells. The success comes from using the same traditional fabrication method while adding a metal layer between the fabricated a-Si:H TFSCs and the underlying Si/SiO2 wafer. After numerous attempts and trials, Kim and his colleagues found a method to reliably peel the fabricated TFSCs from the Si/SO2 wafer by using water penetration between the metal layer and the SiO2 layer on the wafer. John Tumazos, an analyst at Very Independent Reseach.com, said, “Most analysts when they update their spreadsheets probably will reduce their 2013 estimates (for Alcoa) because the metal price plunged so much in the last several weeks,” he said.

The DAS is a multifunction infrared system that provides passive, spherical battlespace awareness for F-35 pilots by simultaneously detecting and tracking aircraft and missiles in every direction, as well as providing visual imagery for day/night navigation and targeting purposes.

Recent growth at Alcoa has come from its engineered products segment, which makes wheels, aircraft parts and other goods. In the just-ended quarter, after-tax operating income also rose in the hard-hit alumina and aluminum segments, where Alcoa has cut higher-cost capacity.

DAS imagery projected onto the pilot’s helmet mounted display provides the capability to look at targets and terrain through the floor and wings of the aircraft. The DAS works in conjunction with the Northrop Grumman AN/APG-81 active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar and other onboard systems to give pilots an unprecedented degree of situational awareness.

Since the start of March, the three-month aluminum price has hovered under $2,000 a tonne - a level close to the cost of production at many smelters - due to sluggish global demand and plentiful supplies.

Boeing Opens New Everett Delivery Center Boeing opened its new expanded Everett Delivery Center (EDC), a world-class facility which will be the home of deliveries for the 747-8, 767, 777 and 787. During darkness, the stored energy will be used for simulated thermal management, scientific experimentation, communications and rover movement. BAE to continue IMX-101 projectiles production for US Army BAE Systems has been awarded a multi-million dollar contract to continue production of insensitive munitions explosive 101 (IMX101) projectiles for the US Army. Valued at $18.4m, the award represents an initial instalment under the original $780m contract, and covers development of additional quantities of IMX-101 munitions, which have already been qualified by the army as a safe and effective alternative for legacy TNT in the M795 155mm artillery rounds. William Buckley, the second-generation leader of QMC, shared how much he learned from his Dad. At the age of 12, William’s job was to sweep the floors and clean the shop. This did not suit William, as he thought, “Hey, I’m the owner’s son, and I should be doing something better than a janitor’s job.” William’s Dad had other plans for his young son. Billy wanted William to be humble and start at the ground floor to learn every aspect of the business.William ended up working at many other businesses before realizing and appreciating the opportunity his father gave him and came back full time to learn to operate QMC. So back to the beginning... In the early days Billy Buckley partnered up with a machinist friend Anwar Dalaq to make ceramic parts for the computer industry. William elaborated, “Our goal is to exceed our customer’s specifications. It’s actually in our AS9100 mission statement; to provide the best service and quality possible to exceed customer expectations in both quality and delivery. Our ability to hold close tolerances and be more cost effective has helped us stand out among our competitors.” The machinists of QMC make magnetic components with time and care to perfect these parts. It takes a different mindset to machine Alumina, cobalt, neodymium, samarium, garnet, zirconia, sapphire stycast, cordierite, quartz, stealite, pyrex, and ferrite. It takes many steps to prevent these materials from stressing and cracking. William said he sees some automation in the near future as a method of maintaining the processes and relieve the human element of moving

material from one station to another in order to have them concentrate on producing more parts. The 24 employees at QMC work a 4-10 schedule and enjoy nice long weekends. The longevity at QMC is many years of service. The team enjoys their work, the family atmosphere, and are all versed at meeting their company’s needs. William works closely with his wife, Chante, who is the Director of Finance and Operations. Chante worked in finance and operations for over 15years in industries including gaming, medical, defense, and manufacturing. William earned his degree in Business Administration from Azusa Pacific University and spent many years working in the film industry managing personnel and film locations with multi-million dollar budgets. He admits since he was 12 he worked at QMC in many capacities. Today William is instrumental in research and development including but not limited to machine and equipment recommendations. William was looking for a great Blanchard grinding machine and after much investigation and research, found the DCM machine tool grinder IG 280 SD. Retired Air Force General Charles Wald, now a director at Deloitte Services LP, said he expected the Pentagon would cut furloughs “to zero.” Wald, speaking in a separate interview on “Capitol Gains,” said the Pentagon had been “very frugal” in its spending since the start of the fiscal year. “My guess is that they will find a way not to have furloughs,”Wald said.

U.S. Army Awards BAE Systems Contract To Produce More Innovative Explosives Under this contract, the company received an initial $18.4 million order to produce additional quantities of IMX-101, an insensitive munition that is approved by the Army as a safe and effective replacement for TNT in artillery rounds. “The work we do at Holston is critical to the defense of our nation and to the safety of our men and women in uniform,” said Erin Moseley, president of BAE Systems’ Support Solutions sector. “IMX-101 is truly innovative and is revolutionizing military ordnance. Once fully fielded, it will help save lives on and off the battlefield.” BAE Systems developed IMX-101 and fielded it in partnership with the Army at the Holston plant, which the company operates and manages for the government. IMX-101 is part of a new family of explosives under development called Insensitive Munitions eXplosives (IMX). Textron to supply turrets and support services for Colombian APCs Textron Marine & Land Systems (TM&LS) has been awarded a contract to supply components and support services for the Colombian Army’s (COLAR) armoured personnel carriers (APC). Awarded by the US Army Tank-Automotive and Armaments Command (TACOM), the $5.5m contract covers production and delivery of 12 armoured turrets, vehicle repairs and spare parts, as well as technical support services for the Colombian APCs. Lockheed Martin’s Havoc 8x8 Completes Swim Tests in Marine Personnel Carrier Competition Lockheed Martin’s Havoc 8x8, an eight-wheel-drive Armored Modular Vehicle, successfully completed amphibious testing as part of its evaluation for the Marine Personnel Carrier (MPC) competition. General Motors To Invest $332 Million In Plant Upgrades The Detroit News reports, “General Motors Co. said it will invest $331.8 million into four powertrain plants in Michigan, Ohio and Indiana to help it build more fuel-efficient engines and an eight-speed transmission. In addition, the company is adding $46 million to previously announced investments at two other Michigan” factories. “Flint Engine Operations will get the bulk of the new money - $215 million - to build a small Ecotec gasoline engine and upgrade tooling for production of a current V-6 engine.” The Detroit Free Press reports, “In addition to Flint, the investments are: $55.7 million for

50 groups in 37 states vie for federal drone test site tag The competition for government recognition as a federal-approved test site for drone technology has heated in recent weeks, and now 50 groups from 37 different states are vying for the title. The tag, from the Federal Aviation Administration, is seen as a means of generating money for states. There are six such designations available, and technically, the designation itself does not award any money. High tolerance precision components are the Larkin’s specialty and they rarely say no to their customers. In fact a company came to them when they were with a previous company and asked if they could make an auger that the customer just laid on their desk. Of course the first words the Larkins gave were yes, we can make that part. This customer had no prints and no data to offer, just a sample part. The Larkins had to reverse engineer this intricate two-foot long 6-inch diameter screw auger and machine it using 4 axis machines. To get it done, they tried using the design software they had but it did not work. Their engineering department took near 8 weeks to design a step-by-step process to machine the part on the 4 axis machines they had. Even though they got it done this wasn’t the methodology they wanted to use going forward.

In later days the company that they did the work for was sold and the new company that took over just wanted to focus on semi-conductor work. Since they did not want to work on the screw augers any longer, and wanted to make sure that their customer was taken care of, they asked the Larkins if they would help them by taking over the auger business to support this customer. In time the customer wanted many different designs and the Larkins didn’t feel they could handle the new designs without some really powerful software for programming. It was at this time that Rick contacted many different software companies to help make the part with their respective software, the company that could make/ program the part to be machined on 4 axis machines they announced would be the company that they would buy new software from. Not surprisingly almost every company that came in said it couldn’t be done, or gave up and told the Larkins they had to buy new 5 axis machines to get the job done. “The only one that could do it for us was Delcam’s FeatureCAM. So, that’s why we bought FeatureCAM, and we are very glad we did, because it really helps us save a


lot of time on the parts we get in today.” said Rick. Rick continued, “Right around this time line we were getting more and more solid models in from our customers and FeatureCAM allowed us to just input the customer solid models directly in and do a seamless programming to the machines.” I asked Rick if it was really as easy as all that and what was the learning curve. Rick said, “John Gale was our salesman he is really great to work with. He’s very knowledgeable and we could always get a quick answer back from Delcam when we had questions or didn’t understand something. In fact sometimes I’d just send the file to Delcam and they’d show me better ways to work with the part by doing things differently. The support just couldn’t get any better! We also watched numerous training videos on FeatureCAM and this really helped us to become more proficient at using the software. It additionally saved us so much time programming the parts. Once we saw how easy it was to take in a solid model and work with the FeatureCAM software, and use the power of the software, we could program everything so much faster saving us so much time programming our parts.” Rick continued, “As part of the yearly maintenance package, Delcam continually sends us updates and service packs for the software that keeps us up to date with the latest fixes or improvements to the software. This is a great benefit for our company! It’s so easy to update while we are in the software. We just hit the update tab, the software verifies our version, and we get an update or patch, it’s that easy. The software becomes more powerful with every update but always beneficial, making the software more user friendly which makes us become better at our job.” What’s the future look like for Larkin Precision? The addition of 5 axis machines will take Larkin to a whole new level, and they will not go back. By having less set ups or even one set up, getting more done in less amount of time, and a perfect finished part that’s easier for QA to check. The philosophy going forward is for Larkin to acquire the best and latest in technology to maintain the highest level of performance and customer service for their customers. Rick said, “It’s hard to find good machinists today, because there are fewer out there, so we are buying into technology that does more within the software or machine tool itself. GDLS also received a $132.7m contract from TACOM for procurement and development of 69 tanks for the Royal Saudi Army in January. An upgraded version of the US Army and Marine Corps’ M1A1 MBT, the M1A2 Abrams is designed to engage and attack enemy forces using enhanced firepower, manoeuvrability and shock effect in the battlefield. Integrated with manually loaded 120mm M256 smoothbore cannon, the tank is also capable of firing a multitude of different rounds, such as M865 TPCSDS-T and M831 TP-T training ammunition against enemy armoured vehicles, soldiers and low-flying aircraft.

Boeing is developing a family of three small satellites – from 4 to 1,000 kg in size – to whet the growing appetite of commercial and government customers interested in pursuing lower-cost space platforms. This small satellite market is one that is “coming of age,” potentially worth billions over the next 10 years, says Alex Lopez, vice president

of advanced network and space systems at Boeing. The company has yet to get a committed customer, but has been briefing the government and commercial operators. Boeing unveiled the concept, developed by its Phantom Works advanced development arm, on April 8 on the eve of the 29th National Space Symposium here. Called Phantom Phoenix, the platform options will share a common architecture and flight software, potentially cutting down on unique research and development costs for customers. In the past, each Air Force satellite program required dedicated software, a large development cost for uniquely designed or modified buses. Boeing officials are also boasting that the designs will simplify integration work for missions including intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance for government customers to civil planetary science. “Building upon the success Boeing has had with our 702 satellite family, we’ve rapidly developed a line of satellites to address the market between large geosynchronous spacecraft and nanosatellites,” says Darryl Davis, president of Boeing Phantom Works. The three designs are as follows: Phantom Phoenix (500-1,000 kg designed for single and dual launch); Phantom Phoenix EELV Secondary Payload Adaptor (180-kg class spacecraft designed to mate with the ESPA ring capable of carrying up to six satellites on an Atlas V or Delta IV Evolved Expendable Launch Vehicle); and Phantom Phoenix Nano (a 4-10 kg class spacecraft optimized for space and weather missions.

Customers can expect delivery within two years of an order, Lopez says.

Though prototype work is under way for each of these satellite classes, much of the focus is in reducing risk in common software and avionics. “It is less about the structure and more about being able to plug and play for the mission,” says Bruce Chesley, director of advanced space and intelligence systems. “The structure is not the difficult part” of the development. The software is the “crux of the investment we are making now,” he says. Boeing is paying for this work out of its internal research and development accounts.

These options could interest the U.S. Air Force, which is exploring opportunities to disaggregate missions in the future so as not to have to develop massive, $1 billion satellites such as the Space-Based Infrared System or Advanced Extremely High Frequency constellation. Though this may not be a cheaper approach than building large satellites, it could offer more flexibility and resiliency than today’s architecture, says Gen. William Shelton, Air Force Space Command chief.

Energy industry and Solar Oregon step up to meet need for science education The K-12 Renewable Energy Education Program is in full swing with ten classrooms already served and another forty scheduled for the remainder of the school year. The program supports teachers in providing meaningful, hands-on science education while exposing students to possible careers in the renewable energy fields. The curriculum explores the trade-offs of renewable and non-renewable energy sources, how electricity is produced and used, and wind and solar technology. Students use inquiry and engineering design principles to solve current, real-world energy problems. The program helps teachers meet Oregon State Science Standards and provide lab-based science lessons that otherwise might not be possible because of class size, lack of supplies or teacher knowledge. NASA Selects Explorer Investigations for Formulation NASA’s Astrophysics Explorer Program has selected two missions for launch in 2017: a planet-hunting satellite and an International Space Station instrument to observe X-rays from stars. The Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) and Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) were among four concept studies submitted in September 2012. NASA determined these two offer the best scientific value and most feasible development plans. TESS will use an array of telescopes to perform an all-sky survey to discover transiting exoplanets ranging from Earth-sized to gas giants, in orbit around the nearest and brightest stars in the sky. Its goal is to identify terrestrial planets in the habitable zones of nearby stars. Its principal investigator is George Ricker of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge. NICER will be mounted on the space station and measure the variability of cosmic X-ray sources, a process called X-ray timing, to explore the exotic states of matter within neutron stars and reveal their interior and surface compositions. Sometimes the planets, or at least the pliers, blades and tools, align perfectly—like the fact that Tim Leatherman, former English teacher and helicopter mechanic, inventor and founder of worldfamous Leatherman multi-tools, had a cool, outdoorsy name. Produces Leatherman Quality Tools

“Safety is always our first concern on the production floor,” says Juli Potts, human resource generalist at Leatherman, “and that takes highly trained and highly focused employees working as a team. We use all the tools available to ensure qualified applicants and well prepared employees.” In 2010, Leatherman called upon the Portland office of Aerotek, a worldwide staffing agency, to recruit a production team for the Leatherman manufacturing facility. Aerotek soon partnered with MHCC and WorkSource Oregon to recruit new employees and develop a customized training program that would prepare those prospects for high-volume, high-quality

production work. The trainingto-work program which resulted provides four days of training in Manufacturing Foundations and leads to OSHA 10 completion—a universal, industry recognized safe-manufacturing credential. Those who successfully complete the new program are then qualified and prepared to start work at the Leatherman production facility. “This is a great opportunity for us to help provide both Leathermanspecific training and industry-specific training that reaches beyond a single employer,” says Robert Weinman, MHCC’s business and industry workforce training coordinator. “From MHCC’s perspective, we wanted to develop a program

I learned the skills I needed quickly and went to work the following week.” that was of value to Aerotek and Leatherman, but that included industry recognized skill assessments and credentials.” In addition to earning the OSHA 10 completion, all participants complete the National Career Readiness Certificate (NCRC). The NCRC is a nationally recognized skills assessment tool that ranks an individual’s abilities in math, reading and locating information. The NCRC is now being implemented into programs in at least 35 states.

“We understood that the requirement was based on worker safety,” says Aerotek’s Sarah Hovdey, “but we were also familiar with MHCC’s expertise in workplace training, and we wondered if together we could develop a training program and certification that would satisfy Leatherman’s requirements and open the door to new employees.” Indeed they could—what has emerged from the Aerotek partnership with MHCC and WorkSource Oregon is a comprehensive recruitment process that involves initial screening, cognitive and physical assessment and several interviews before the candidates can attend the training. Like a Leatherman tool, all pieces have fallen perfectly into place. Acquiring those skills has led to the hiring of more than 30 new employees at the Leatherman site.

One such success story is Michael Hernandez, who went through the training and now has a good job at Leatherman. He says, “I was working part-time in a shoe store and wanted something better. If you want to go into manufacturing, this program is the way to do it. I learned the skills I needed quickly and went to work the following week. Leatherman is a great place to work and I hope to be here a long time.” With a little help from MHCC— part of the College’s standing commitment to the community— Hernandez and the other new employees will contribute to a safer production environment and higher production rates for Leatherman, and are aligned to advance quickly in their career goals. Aerojet, a GenCorp company, announced that its Delta II second stage engine, the AJ10-118K, successfully passed a requalification test of its ablative chamber at Aerojet’s J4 altitude simulation test facility in Sacramento. The intent of the requalification program was to replace the asbestos insulator material with a readily-available and environmentally-friendly alternative. The three-burn hot fire test simulated a “test-like-you-fly” duty cycle configuration, qualifying the new engine configuration for flight. The altitude test was preceded by a successful sea-level test in November 2012.

“The Delta II is one of the most robust and reliable rocket engines ever flown,” said Aerojet Vice President of Space and Launch Systems Julie Van Kleeck. “This test represents another successful milestone in a program with a rich history of successful milestones and 100 percent mission success. Additionally, it verifies that the past design rigor put into this heritage technology meets and exceeds the scrutiny of modern day expectations for flight.” Under contract to United Launch Alliance, Aerojet’s AJ10 has provided second-stage propulsion on 151 Delta II flights to date with a 100 percent success rate. The engine has helped deliver payloads for NASA’s space exploration efforts such as the Phoenix Mars Lander, Mars Polar Lander, Deep Impact, Kepler, NEAR Shoemaker and the Mars Exploration Rovers, Spirit and Opportunity, as well as the U.S. Air Force Global Positioning System Block IIR fleet. The AJ10 second stage engine produces approximately 10,000 lbs. of thrust for orbital insertion. There are currently four flights in the near-term manifest for Delta II, two in 2014 and two in 2016.

BAE to advance micro-robotics platforms development for US Army BAE Systems has received a contract to continue serving as industrial lead for the US Army Research Laboratory’s (ARL) Micro Autonomous Systems and Technology (MAST) Collaborative Technology Alliance for the next five years. Under the $43m cooperative agreement extension, the company will continue joint research with the MAST Alliance’s team of scientists from the army, academia and industry to help accelerate development of bio-inspired micro-robotics systems for US ground forces. BAE Systems MAST strategic development manager Bill Devine said: “The technologies being developed under MAST will support products that extend soldiers’ capabilities, while keeping them out of harm’s way.” ARL MAST Consortium manager Dr Brett Piekarski said the quality and success of research conducted over the past five years contributed to the decision to award the program extension option. SpaceX’s Merlin 1D Engine Achieves Flight Qualification Space Exploration Technologies’ (SpaceX) Merlin 1D engine has achieved flight qualification, a major milestone for the next generation Merlin engine. Through a 28 test qualification program, the Merlin 1D accumulated 1,970 seconds of total test time, the equivalent run time of over 10 full mission durations, and is now fully qualified to fly on the Falcon 9 rocket. The program included four tests at or above the power (147,000 pounds of thrust) and duration (185 seconds) required for a Falcon 9 rocket launch. The Merlin 1D engine was also tested at propellant inlet and operating conditions that were well outside the bounds of expected flight conditions. SpaceX’s testing program demonstrated a ratio of 4:1 for critical engine life parameters such as firing duration and restart capacity to the engine’s expected flight requirements. Anti-drone devices for sale: Military contractor claims to have counter-UAV technology

Faucett says his team of engineers know the ins and outs of the drone business, and could be the only option for some people right now. “We understand the nature of the equipment drone manufacturers are using and understand how to counter their sensors,” Faucett tells US News & World Report. “We’re not going to be countering Predator drones that are shooting cruise missiles, but we’re talking about local law enforcement drones and commercial ones that people might be using for spying.”

Domestic drones will soon be soaring through the sky left and right, but a company in Oregon with ties to the US military is marketing a service that they say will make sure private property is safe from surveillance. The team at one-month-old Domestic Drone Countermeasures doesn’t go into many specifics, but says they can offer services that will make sure Americans aren’t being spied on by hovering eyes in the sky. “If there’s going to be private and commercial drones, there will be people who want to safeguard information,” DDC’s Tim Faucett told Portland’s KOIN 6. “Think about industrial espionage, or companies that don’t want drones around their facilities.” Faucett is no stranger to working around factories — he also runs a company, Aplus Mobile, that has been recognized for providing “high quality computer and appliances” to defense contractors that deal with drones, including Boeing, Lockheed Martin and Raytheon. Telerobotic System Designed to Treat Bladder Cancer Although bladder cancer is the sixth most common form of cancer in the U.S. and the most expensive to treat, the basic method that doctors use to treat it hasn’t changed much in more than 70 years. An interdisciplinary collaboration of engineers and doctors at Vanderbilt and Columbia Universities intends to change that situation dramatically. Headed by Nabil Simaan, associate professor of mechanical engineering at Vanderbilt, the team has developed a prototype telerobotic platform designed to be inserted through natural orifices – in this case the urethra – that can provide surgeons with a much better view of bladder tumors so they can diagnose them more accurately. It is also designed to make it easier to remove tumors from the lining of the bladder regardless of their location – an operation called transurethral recession.


“When I observed my first transurethral resection, I was amazed at how crude the instruments are and how much pushing and stretching of the patient’s body is required,” Simaan said. That experience inspired the engineer to develop a system that uses micro-robotics to perform this difficult type of surgery. Its features and capabilities are described in an article titled “Design and Evaluation of a Minimally Invasive Telerobotic Platform for Transurethral Surveillance and Intervention” published in the April issue of the journal IEEE Transactions on Biomedical Engineering. The specialized telerobotic system “doesn’t take the judgment out of surgeons’ hands, it enhances their capabilities and hopefully gives them surgical superpowers,” commented S. Duke Herrell, an associate professor of urologic surgery and biomedical engineering, who specializes in minimally invasive oncology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and is collaborating on the project.

The telerobotic system is designed specifically to operate in this challenging environment.The machine itself is the size and shape of a large Thermos bottle but its business end is only 5.5 millimeters in diameter – about one fifth of an inch – and consists of a segmented robotic arm. The tiny arm can curve through 180 degrees, allowing it to point in every direction including directly back at its entry point. At the tip of the arm is a white light source, an optical fiber laser for cauterization, a fiberscope for observation and a tiny forceps for gripping tissue. The engineers report that they can control the position of the snake-like arm with sub-millimeter precision: a level adequate for operating in clinical conditions. They have also demonstrated that the device can remove tissue for biopsies by gripping target tissue with the forceps and then cutting it off with the laser. The fiberscope produced a 10,000-pixel image that was directed to a digital video camera system. Because it is steerable, the instrument was able to provide closeup views of the bladder walls at favorable viewing angles. However, the testing revealed the camera system’s effectiveness was limited by poor distance resolution. According to the researchers, this can be corrected by re-designing the fiberscope or by replacing it with a miniature camera tip. In the future, the researchers intend to incorporate additional imaging methods for improving the ability to identify tumor boundaries. These include a fluorescence endoscope, optical coherence tomography that uses infrared radiation to obtain micrometer-resolution images of tissue and ultrasound to augment the surgeon’s natural vision. In addition to these observational methods, the researchers have given their robot arm a sense of touch. Using a technique called force-feedback, they can measure the force acting on the tip when it comes into contact with tissue. Normally, tumors protrude from the surrounding tissue. used this fact to successfully design new algorithms that allow the robot arm in the device to accurately trace a tumor’s edge. He did so by positioning the tip on the edge of a tumor and instructing it to move in the direction that maintains the same pressure. “Surgeons can typically identify the gross visual margin of a tumor within a millimeter, but a robot like this has the potential of doing so with sub-millimetric precision and additional technologies may actually be able to distinguish margins at the cellular level,” said Herrell. The team plans to make use of this level of precision to program the robot to perform what surgeons call an “en-block resection,” the removal of an entire tumor plus a small margin of normal tissue in one operation. That procedure is designed to ensure that no cancerous cells are left behind that can reseed the tumor. The engineers are also using the system’s capabilities to design a number of safety measures into the telerobotic system. For example, the operator can set a maximum depth that the laser will cut and, even if the operator’s hand slips, the robot will not cut any deeper. The Pentagon has decided to use $380 million from the continuing resolution passed last month to fund a joint missile defense program, despite a provision in last year’s Defense authorization bill specifically prohibiting funding the program. In a letter sent to the German and Italian Defense ministers, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said the U.S. would provide the money in 2013 for development of the Medium Extended Air Defense System (MEADS), a joint venture between the three countries. “The appropriated amount, less the sequester reduction, will be the final U.S. contribution to the MEADS program,” Hagel wrote in the letter, obtained by The Hill. “I am pleased we are able to fulfill our commitment.” MEADS has long been in the cross-hairs of congressional lawmakers, as the Army decided two years ago it would not procure the missile defense system. But the Pentagon has urged the completion of development for MEADS anyway, in order to manufacture the technology and uphold its obligations to NATO allies. The program is produced by MEADS International, a group of international defense firms headed by Lockheed Martin.

Kelly Ayotte (R-N.H.) led the charge against MEADS during debate on the government funding measure last month, calling the system the “missile to nowhere.” “It’s outrageous that the administration is ‘pleased’ to provide this funding, especially at the same time the Defense Department has begun grounding combat aircraft as a result of sequestration,” Ayotte said in a statement to The Hill.

The Pentagon and some lawmakers in Congress still disagree, however, over how the Pentagon should be using the $380 million for the program that was in the continuing resolution. Appropriators had said in the legislation that the money could either go toward developing the program or covering termination costs.The House Appropriations Committee, however, said that the funds could only be used for termination costs, because the National Defense Authorization Act specifically prohibited using money to develop the program.

“As the most recent expression of Congress’s direction with regard to MEADS, the Appropriations Act itself 4/4/12 must be given full force and effect,” Schumann said. Ayotte attempted last month to strip the MEADS funding with an amendment to the funding resolution. But the amendment was not given a vote, thanks in part to efforts from the Senate’s No. 3 Democrat, Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.), as his state houses jobs for the weapon program.

Committee spokeswoman Jennifer Hing said that the Pentagon’s decision was not in compliance with the law. “The committee’s position is that the funding provided for MEADS should be used for termination costs only, as prescribed by the Defense Authorization bill,” Hing said. “We do not believe that any other use of the funds would be in compliance with the law.” The House Armed Services Committee also disagreed with the Pentagon and said it was ignoring “very clear congressional intent,” an aide said. The aide said the committee would work with appropriators to ensure this situation does not occur again. The Pentagon, however, argued the continuing resolution “effectively superseded” the authorization bill, and as a result funding MEADS is not prohibited.

Raytheon, which is headquartered in the Northeast, lobbied hard against MEADS, as the defense firm has the rival Patriot Missile program that MEADS was supposed to supplant. During the Senate’s budget vote-a-rama, Ayotte successfully included a measure that prohibited funds for the program in 2014, although that was nonbinding. MEADS International said in a statement that the funding “will enable the U.S., Germany and Italy to demonstrate the advanced 360-degree capabilities of MEADS in a tactical ballistic missile intercept test later this year.”
