“History has demonstrated that the most notable winners usually encountered heartbreaking obstacles before they triumphed. They won because they refused to become discouraged by their defeats.” — B.C. FORBES Webster’s defines perseverance as: the continued effort to do or achieve something despite difficulties, failure, or opposition. I see this everyday in our industry, and nowhere is it more apparent than in the machine shops I have the pleasure to visit. Small business owners who weather economic downturns, medical issues, family crises, intuitively know that they must pick themselves back up in order to succeed. They have employees who rely upon their success, and often they are making mission critical parts that must be made perfectly. Success is determined by your drive to succeed, how hard you’re willing to work to get what you want, and having the patience and endurance to stick with your vision until it either bears fruit or proves to be a bad idea. And despite our best intentions, we all will fail. Don’t despair. Here are some great examples of business leaders who failed, in some cases miserably, before they succeeded: Bill Gates - Before building arguably one of the most successful companies in the world, Gates started a business called Traf-O-Data that went nowhere and he dropped out of Harvard. But his passion for computers and his vision of the opportunities led him to start Microsoft. Colonel Sanders - The Colonel’s famous secret chicken recipe was rejected over a 1,000 times before a restaurant accepted it. What is particularly inspiring about this example is that the Colonel was embarking upon a new chapter in his life at the age of young ago of 65! Thomas Edison - Edison, one of the most prolific inventors in history (holding over 1000 U.S. patents), was told as a boy by his teacher that he was too stupid to learn anything and suggested he go into a field that did not require intelligence. He tried more than 9,000 experiments before he created the first successful light bulb. Walt Disney - An editor fired Disney because, “he lacked imagination and had no original ideas.” His first animation company went bankrupt and it’s said that he was turned down hundreds of times when he sought financing for Disney World. The Walt Disney Company makes average revenue of U.S. $30 billion annually. Persevere...in everything you do. Choose to be kind and through inner perseverance conduct yourselves accordingly. The only thing we, as individuals have control over, is how we react to situations and challenges. Choose to react positively and with integrity and dignity. To do this requires perseverance. Everybody has it. It’s just some work a little harder at using it. In The Dip, A Little Book That Teaches You When to Quit (And When to Stick), the author writes about how those who aspire to become the best must stay focused and go through incredible hardship to reach their goal. He also speaks to the importance of dropping the losers, having the courage to discontinue projects or directions that prove to be duds. And even if you have the great quality of perseverance, there will inevitably be times when you become disillusioned, feel you are burnt out. This is when it is most critical that you find a way to rejuvenate your drive, your persistence, and your never-ending quest for success. Until next issue, persevere! I know I shall. I wish you well, and God Bless our Troops!

Announcements & Releases Delcam.acquires.CADCAM.Systems. Delcam has established a direct office in Illinois following its acquisition of its Rockfordbased reseller, CAD CAM Systems. CAD CAM Systems President, Andy Bergstrom, and the company’s staff will become direct employees of Delcam North America to ensure continuity of service to the hundreds of users of Delcam software in the region. Delcam Illinois is the company’s sixth direct office in North America; the others are in Salt Lake City, Philadelphia and Pasadena, California, in the USA, and in Windsor and Toronto in Canada. CAD CAM Systems was founded in 1986 by Andy Bergstrom and his partner, Jim Epperson. The company became a Delcam Sales Partner in 1994, with both partners believing the Delcam software to be the best in its class. Its history of almost twenty years makes it the most experienced Delcam reseller in the USA. During that time, CAD CAM Systems has supported hundreds of customers in Illinois and Iowa, ranging from multi-national organizations to companies of all sizes in the mould, die, pattern and prototyping industries. In 1996, CADCAM Systems bought a vertical machining centre and began doing contract CNC machining for software customers using Delcam’s programming systems. receiving Business Recognition Awards included Adaptive Innovations Corp., the Coleman Company, Datalogix, Rocky Mountain Bottle Company, SourceGas, and Sundyne Corp. Faustson Tool has been a presence in the community for more than 30 years. Founded in 1981 by Paul and Alicia Svaldi, Faustson began as a small business in an 80-square-foot space, with one milling machine and two employees servicing off-load machine shops. The Svaldi’s keen insight into the future of high-precision manufacturing placed them on the cutting edge of manufacturing technology, where they have been ever since. In the 1980s, Faustson was the first manufacturer to demonstrate the benefits of electric discharge machining technology (EDM), also known as “spark eroding”. In the 1990s Faustson was the first to demonstrate the benefits of five-axis milling and its potential to change the face of manufacturing. Five-axis milling machines have a cutting accuracy of five millionths of an inch, smaller than a strand of hair. Today, Faustson Tool has grown into a 16,000-square-foot facility with more than 20 highly skilled employees, and is owned and operated by Alicia Svaldi. Faustson Tool remains in the vanguard of the manufacturing industry, continuing a tradition of pioneering the newest technology and pushing its limits. Faustson Tool takes on the most challenging applications only a few U.S. companies can handle, using high-end precision machining to do things no one else in the industry thinks can be done. And, in fact, a world-first was achieved with the installation of an anodizing machine at a professional trade show made possible thanks to Cyklos’ ‘zero waste’ capability. The Cyklos concept is based on a patented technology owned by Tornos in which parts are transported from bath to bath on small carriers which rotate as the parts move through the machine. Since typically hundreds of parts can be loaded on each carrier and a carrier can enter the machine every two minutes, the machine throughput can continuously process parts at a rate of one part per second. As each carrier undergoes the exact same processing sequence and since the process (chemicals, temperature, voltage, etc.) is entirely computer-controlled, the stability of the processing performances is ensured. Plus, the carrier performs several complete rotations in the processing baths, eliminating gas and non uniformities seen in existing electro-chemical processing solutions. Hence, the Cyklos technology achieves an unprecedented combination of productivity, stability, quality and uniformity. The first machines in the family, the Cyklos A300 machines, have already been delivered. The A300 Announcements Continued Page 14

Top.Aircraft.Engine.Builder. Relies. on. GF. AgieCharmilles.for.Precision.Milling.. Aero Engines, a leader in the manufacture of commercial and military aircraft engines, recently opened a new Center of Excellence in Munich, Germany that relies on high-performance machine tools, including MIKRON HPM 800U milling machines from GF AgieCharmilles, for high-tech blisk production.

MTU opened the facility to accommodate an increased market demand for blisk use in modern engine compressors, including Pratt & Whitney’s PW1000G family of engines and Europrop Intl’s TP400-D6 that powers A4000M military transport aircraft. A blisk is a single engine component that A2Z METALWORKER

consists of a rotor disk and blades. As such, it is also referred to as an integrally bladed rotor. Because they are made from tough materials, including titanium and heat resistant superalloys, as well as feature complex geometries, blisks present several machining challenges that can only be overcome using the latest machine tool technology. Featuring a sturdy, compact design and large work envelope, the MIKRON HPM 800U machine is highly suitable for efficient, precise blisk production. It offers dynamic and economical milling performance through powerful operating mechanisms on the X,Y and Z axes and direct operating mechanisms on the circular and swiveling axes. The machine’s maximum X-Y traverse paths are 31.5” each, with a Z-axis that provides 27.6” clearance between the table surface and spindle nose. The MIKRON HPM 800U can machine workpieces of up to 31.5” in diameter and 23.6” high on five sides using tools up to 3.9” in length. The HPM 800U’s Step-Tec spindle provides high performance, even in applications such as large steel drilling with high-torque requirements. Inline motor spindle options

include a 20,000-rpm version for general machining or 28,000-rpm version for machining with small tools. Both options feature the HSK-A63 interface and are perfectly suited to complex open-die surfaces or machining basic materials. The 28,000rpm spindle uses CoolCore, a water-cooled rotor shaft, to maintain thermal stability and maximize accuracy. According to Gisbert Ledvon, director for GF AgieCharmilles in North America, aerospace manufacturing has long been a core expertise of GF AgieCharmilles, and the company is extremely proud of its partnership with MTU. “We take a lot of pride in how MTU relies on our MIKRON HPM 800U machines to easily meet their high precision needs and stringent blisk manufacturing requirements.” When the Center of Excellence is running at full capacity, MTU will rely on 20 milling machines, seven machines with combined milling and turning operations, and eight coordinate measuring machines to boost production from 600 blisks per year up to 3,500 per year by 2016. Using an electric system to taxi planes on the runway can save as much as $200,000 a year in fuel expenses, says an official with the HoneywellSafran venture that developed the technology. “We’ve looked at the mid- to short-haul market, and we think that is where there is the greatest value,” says Jim Fusaro, Honeywell product marketing vice president and business manager of the Electric Green Taxiing System. The system, which uses motors in the landing gear, had its debut at the Paris Air Show.

U.S.. aerospace. companies. seek. to. reassure. public.on.drones U.S. aerospace companies, keen to benefit from billions of dollars in possible future orders for civilian drones, are mobilizing to assuage public concerns about privacy and safety. The Aerospace Industries Association, the U.S. industry’s biggest lobbying group, released a new poll, which showed that 54 percent of Americans favor use of drones for civilian purposes, including border patrol, weather prediction and disaster response. Marion Blakey, former administrator of the Federal Aviation Administration, and AIA’s chief executive, said she was heartened by the poll, but her industry needed to do a better job dispelling misperceptions about drones. “We feel like there’s been too much rhetoric about privacy concerns and things that aren’t relevant to domestic use of unmanned aerial systems,” Blakey told Reuters. “Nobody’s talking about using militarized drones in U.S. civil airspace.”

Boeing. deliveries. top. Airbus. in. 1st. half,. boosted.by.resumption.of.787.flying Boeing has delivered 306 jetliners so far, including 17 787s. Boeing is playing catch-up with those deliveries because of the problems with the 787’s battery earlier this year. Boeing is aiming to deliver 60 of those planes this year. Airbus has delivered 295 civilian planes this year. It delivered more of its smaller A320 family of planes than the comparable Boeing jets. Airbus handed over 233 of its A320 family of planes, compared to Boeing’s deliveries of 218 of its 737s. Chicago-based Boeing Co. and Europe-based Airbus are the main two makers of large commercial airliners. Sales of most of their planes have been speeding up, although they’ve been disappointed by slowerthan-expected sales of their largest planes.

Immigration. deal. would. boost. defense. manufacturers. The border security plan the Senate approved last week includes unusual language mandating the purchase of specific models of helicopters and radar equipment for deployment along the U.S.-Mexican border, providing a potential windfall worth tens of millions of dollars to top defense contractors. The legislation would require the U.S. Border Patrol to acquire, among other items, six Northrop Grumman airborne radar systems that cost $9.3 million each, 15 Sikorsky Black Hawk helicopters that average more than $17 million apiece, and eight light enforcement helicopters made by American Eurocopter that sell for about $3 million each. The legislation also calls for 17 UH-1N helicopters made by Bell Helicopter, an older model that the company no longer manufactures. The legislation would spend $30 billion over the next decade to hire more than 19,000 new Border Patrol agents, an undertaking that would double the size of the force and that many immigration experts consider wasteful and unnecessary. The measure also would devote $7.5 billion to build 350 miles of fencing along the U.S.-Mexican border and $4.5 billion to buy new border technology. The legislation would have to be fully implemented, along with electronic visa and employment verification systems, before immigrants could receive green cards.

TVT DIE CASTING Precision aluminum and zinc die casting, machining and finishing. Quality, Reliability and Service

The list of equipment included in the legislation was drawn from a technological needs assessment developed by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency in 2010, according to a senior Department of Homeland Security official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe the internal process. Agency staff members compiled the list at the request of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano after she stopped a virtual-fence project that was plagued by cost overruns and delays. Border Patrol officials provided the list to congressional staffers who had asked what the agency needed to effectively control the border. The $4.5 billion set aside for technology would be a boon for defense contractors, who are looking for opportunities as the United States continues to reduce its presence in Afghanistan.

We are a full service job shop, providing as much or as little project involvement as required – from tool and die design to finishing and assembly.

Last month, Boeing painted a rosy picture for commercial aircraft, predicting 35,000 new airplanes in the next 20 years. The press release noted that “The single-aisle market, served by Boeing’s NextGeneration 737 and the future 737 MAX, is the main driver of the forecast and continues to show strength. 24,670 new airplanes will be needed in this segment due to the growth of low-cost carriers and airlines from emerging markets…. After facing high and volatile fuel prices and a highly competitive environment, airlines have been forced to change the way they manage their business..” On its website, FOX News Business (6/11, Bootan) reports, “Boeing expects to make the most money from single-aisle jets, which are planes with anywhere from 90 to 230 seats like the 737 MAX, which it says it the ‘main driver of the forecast and continues to show strength.’” The company “sees deliveries in that market rising to 24,670 over the next 20 years, a total value of $2.29 trillion.” Boeing “sees the largest demand coming out of Asia-Pacific, with deliveries expected to reach 12,820 over the next two decades as demand in rapidly expanding regions like China crave more demand and business travel.”

Pratt.May.Supply.Engines.For.Possible.Comac.Wide-Body.Plane Bloomberg News reports because Boeing and Airbus are using other engines in their latest wide-body planes, Pratt & Whitney is working with Commercial Aircraft Corp. of China (Comac) on a possible wide-body model of their own. Earlier this month, Comac said it is conducting a “pre-study” into the concept. According to the article, if Pratt does provide the engines for such a plane it would be a “boost” for the company since it has not supplied an engine for that class since 1987. However, Comac, in an email response to questions, said it was “still too early” for foreign involvement.

Paris.Air. Show. Plane. Orders. Show. LongTerm.Confidence.In.Industry The Wall Street Journal reports the commercial aviation industry continued to purchase large amounts of planes at this year’s Paris Air Show from both Boeing and Airbus. Reviewing their totals for the show, the articles claims airlines and lessors had confidence in the industry over the long-term. Meanwhile, Bloomberg News reports the amount of orders are “straining” Boeing and Airbus’ “production lines as much as the patience of buyers forced to wait years for their jets.” While some airlines are upset by the wait, the article notes the manufacturers are sometimes using it “to push buyers toward more expensive models” that sometimes have “struggled” to get orders.

Bryan Becker founded Accutech Machine Inc. nearly 20 years ago, in April of 1994. Though he had several years of working for machine shops under his belt, coupled with his formal manufacturing training, Bryan, not even 30 years of age, was extremely young to take on such a bold venture. Bryan says, “I was tired of working for someone else. I wanted my success (or my demise) to be completely in my control.” There was no demise. Business was good from the onset, and the company’s overhead was low, with a single bay to run the business. Just 3 years after starting his company, Bryan hired Tyler Bushman. Tyler, even younger than Bryan, learned machining in high school, and Bryan hired him as a saw operator. The philosophy at Accutech Machine is to grow talent from within the organization, and since Bryan remains very hands on, there is no “That’s not my job” attitude within the company. Bryan says that the ability to grow within the organization results in lower turnover than is seen in the industry. In fact, Tyler today is second in command, with 16 years at the company, and Bryan says that the succession plan calls for Tyler to purchase the business when he retires (years from now). Today, Accutech produces a wide variety of products, ranging from high precision A2Z METALWORKER

aircraft and medical components, to ski lift and oilfield parts.Their customers span the United States, and they even manufacture products that ship internationally. Additionally, they are versed in a wide variety of materials, from exotic and stainless alloys to simple plastics and aluminum. Their stateof-art facility is worth your time to visit. Always pro-actively trying to stay ahead of their competitors, Accutech was early to recognize the need to certify to ISO 9001:2000, which they achieved for the first time nearly a decade ago. Bryan says, “We feel that this is a vital role not only to the quality of product but also to Accutech as a whole. It is more than a quality system. It is a management system that has an effect on everyone and everything in our facility.”

the need to continually decrease costs while simultaneously increasing production, and they know that this can only be done with superior machine tools. Just prior to going to press with this article, the company officially began lights out operation. The company owns many different sizes of machining centers, giving them the ability to run various sizes of parts in varying materials.Their mills are all 4th or 5th axis capable, and they also have 2 integrated high-rise (two level) pallet-handling systems to support their customers’ wide variety of parts and higher quantity runs. They have live tooling on their lathes, allowing them to incorporate milling procedures while turning the parts. Bryan says this enables them to cut down on operations, which in turn saves their customers time and money.

More recently, in 2009 the company added AS9100 to its list of credentials, thereby facilitating growth in the aerospace and defense industries. Tyler says, “We strive for continual improvement of our products and services through training, management involvement, and technological improvements.” He continued, “We have set a quality policy and objectives to analyze and improve our quality and delivery, and to meet or exceed our customer’s requirements. In fact, all of our employees and suppliers are involved in our quest to achieve customer satisfaction.” Accutech’s efforts are evidently paying off, as they are a Tier 1 supplier to several OEMs, and they have earned the distinction of being a Boeing “Silver Supplier”. The team at Accutech is very well aware of

Though Bryan has known about Smith Machinery and its outstanding reputation for quite some time, it wasn’t until the last couple of years that he began purchasing machine tools from them. Clark Smith, 3rd generation president of Smith Machinery, says, “It was just a few years ago that Accutech made a decision, based upon the demand for increasingly complex parts, to purchase higher end technology to support their customers. This is when they invited us to bid on their machine tools.”

was outstanding. We value the fact that they have local support from both distributor and Mazak factory technicians, and when we have an issue, it is resolved immediately. We get very experienced, knowledgeable support from them. Smith Machinery operates ethically, and they are more than fair to us.”

Accutech’s first purchase from Smith Machinery was the Mazak Integrex i-200ST. Tyler says the INTEGREX i-Series MultiTasking centers bring together extreme versatility and accuracy for Accutech’s mid-size to large, complex components. Clark added, “The i-Series machines fall into Level 4 of Mazak’s 5 Levels of Multi-Tasking.”

Achieving and maintaining higher accuracies are accomplished through several design features including Mazak’s unique roller-gear cam drive for the rotating B-axis. It’s super rigid and has virtually no backlash or wear. The i-200ST also has heavy-duty turning spindles, 12,000 RPM 25HP milling spindle and X-axis core cooled ballscrew utilizing temperature controlled circulated oil to enhance thermal stability. In addition, milling spindles are monitored for heat, vibration and displacement as a preventive measure through the Intelligent Performance Spindle (IPS) module. Bryan says, “The support we received from the onset from Smith Machinery and Mazak

Tyler added, “These machines are complex, and you don’t just read a manual to become expert. In fact, Mazak provided onsite training and support to us for 3 solid weeks. Additionally, we have the ability to send our machinists to Mazak for training.” In December, Accutech received their first Mazak horizontal machining center, the HCN 5000-II with a 2-level high-rise Palletech and soon after their new Mazak Variaxis i-700 5-axis arrived with a similar Palletech system. The HCN 5000-II has dramatically shorten cycle-times by using Mazak’s unique ultra-high speed technologies. The 5-axis Variaxis can efficiently machine very complex parts with minimal secondary operations. The two Palletech systems allow Accutech to produce a wide variety of parts with minimal set-up time and provide long periods of unattended operation. The ROI has been so successful that a second HCN-5000-II has been added to that system. Bryan says, “The key to becoming locally and globally competitive is to minimize the labor content of your operations. And the key to plant-floor labor optimization is automation.” Clark agreed and added, “Bryan and the team really have a big picture view. They know what they have to do in order to grow and be competitive, and so they are investing in their future with proven automation.”

Mazak’s palletized machining systems (Palletech) are pre-engineered automation that can serve one machining center with a few pallets – or up to eight machines with (100) pallets. Also, you can add machines, pallets and load/unload stations as you need them, pacing your capital investment with the growth of your business. Palletech includes a simple and effective scheduler, which allows jobs to be queued and prioritized for “lights out” operation. Yet, when the prototype job or the emergency delivery arises, as it always does, it can easily be given top priority in the schedule without the need for re-organizing other work.

Palletech cells are an effective strategy for both low-volume and high-volume requirements. Resident pallets and part fixtures make lots-of-one manufacturing economical, and tombstones with multi-part fixtures serve higher production users. These cells are compatible with Horizontal Machining Centers, Variaxis 5-axis Centers, as well as with the e-Series Integrex. The probes completed this unprecedented “grand tour” and then kept right on flying toward interstellar space.

NASA’s.Voyager. 1. Probe. Enters. New. Realm. Near. Interstellar.Space NASA’s venerable Voyager 1 probe has encountered a strange new region at the outer reaches of the solar system, suggesting the spacecraft is poised to pop free into interstellar space, scientists say. Voyager 1, which has been zooming through space for more than 35 years, observed a dramatic drop in solar particles and a simultaneous big jump in high-energy galactic cosmic rays last August, the scientists announced in three new studies published in the journal Science. The probe did not measure a shift in the direction of the ambient magnetic field, indicating that Voyager 1 is still within the sun’s sphere of influence, researchers said. But mission scientists think the spacecraft will likely leave Earth’s solar system relatively soon. [NASA’s Voyager Probes: 5 Surprising Facts] “I think it’s probably several more years — 2015 is reasonable,” said Voyager project scientist Ed Stone of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, lead author of one of the new studies and co-author of another. “But it’s speculation, because none of the models we have, have this A2Z METALWORKER

Both probes are currently plying the outer layers of the heliosphere, the enormous bubble of charged particles and magnetic fields surrounding the sun. But things are really getting interesting for Voyager 1, the new studies report. On Aug. 25, 2012, the probe recorded a 1,000-fold drop in the number of charged solar particles while also measuring a 9 percent increase in fast-moving particles of galactic origin called cosmic rays.

Voyager 1 should get there first. At 11.5 billion miles (18.5 billion kilometers) from Earth, the spacecraft is the farthest man-made object in space. Voyager 2, for its part, is now 9.4 billion miles (15.1 billion km) from home.

Those are two of the three phenomena that Voyager scientists expect to see when the spacecraft crosses over into interstellar space. But Voyager 1 still hasn’t observed the third one — a shift in magneticfield orientation, from east-west within the solar system to roughly north-south outside of it. The magnetic field “did not change direction. All it did was get compressed, so it’s stronger now than it was,” Stone said. “That’s what one would expect if, in fact, the energetic particles, which were providing the pressure, suddenly left.” Overall, researchers said, Voyager 1’s new data suggest that the spacecraft remains within the solar system, though it appears to be in a sort of interface region connecting the heliosphere and interstellar space. Mission scientists will keep an eye on the magnetic-field readings over the coming months and years, Stone said. “If there’s a dramatic change, like there was last Aug. 25, that will be very exciting,” he said. “If it’s a gradual change, well, it’ll just take us longer to realize what’s happening.” Stone and his colleagues hope that Voyager 1 leaves the solar system before 2020. The probe’s declining power supply will force engineers to shut off the first instrument that year, and all of them will probably stop working by 2025. There’s no reason to think anything will go wrong before 2020, since the spacecraft remains in good health despite its advanced age. But the mission team knows there are no guarantees. “Something could break. That’s what you can’t predict — the random failure,” Stone said. “So far, we’ve been lucky. There haven’t been any catastrophic random failures.”

Many companies have no idea if they’re paying too much for product (PPV), what their OTIF or fill rate metrics are, or how profitable each of their customers is. Toyota says it will unveil a hydrogen fuel-cell-powered sedan later this year that will go on sale in 2015; several other automakers have announced partnerships to commercialize the technology. While many challenges remain for hydrogen vehicles, in recent years researchers have made big improvements in the oft-maligned technology, including greatly lowering its cost. As a result, fuel-cell vehicles look poised to play a significant role in meeting ambitious vehicle emissions regulations, particularly in places such as California.

Center for Automotive Research. Fuel-cell vehicles were once the darling of the Bush administration—President Bush called for $1.2 billion in funding for the technology in his 2003 State of the Union address. They emit only water vapor and could be as convenient as conventional cars, since they can be refueled in the time it takes to fill a gas tank and have a similar driving range. But fuel-cell vehicles proved extremely expensive, and would require a massive investment in hydrogen filling stations to be practical. There have also been questions about just how environmentally friendly hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles actually are: while the cars themselves don’t emit carbon dioxide, hydrogen is produced from natural gas, in a process that releases large amounts of carbon dioxide. Hydrogen can also be made using solar and wind power, but that process is inefficient and expensive. As the challenges with the technology became more apparent, interest waned, and Bush started emphasizing biofuels instead. In 2009, the Obama administration cut funding for fuel-cell vehicle R&D. The energy secretary at the time, Steven Chu, said it would take a miracle for fuel-cell vehicles to succeed. But miracles do happen. Since 2009, the costs involved with fuel-cell vehicles have fallen. The prototypes that GM and Toyota built a few years ago cost well over $1 million each. Now Toyota says its goal is to sell its fuel-cell sedan for less than $100,000. Costs fell as Toyota found ways to reduce the number of parts in its fuel-cell system and to decrease the amount of costly platinum needed. The company says it’s pushing hard on R&D for manufacturing technology, among other things, to lower costs still more ahead of the 2015 launch. Chris Hostetter, vice president oat Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A, says the sedan might go for as little as $50,000, which would make it cheaper than Tesla’s Model S electric vehicle, which has a similar range (other electric vehicles are cheaper, but require frequent recharging). “We may surprise people with the advances we’ve made,” Hostetter says. “Costs have come down at a pretty steady rate,” says Daniel Sperling, director at the University of California at Davis and a member of California’s Air Resources Board, which oversees vehicle emissions regulations. “Most people in the auto industry think that, once in large-scale production, cost won’t be a barrier.”

1974 Bucktail Lane • Sugar Grove, IL 80554 1-888-289-3367 • www.EDMNetwork.com inf@EDMNetwork.com A careful look at the emissions of competing technologies such as electric vehicle and conventional cars shows that fuel-cell cars have significant environmental benefits, even when the hydrogen is made from natural gas. In May, the Department of Energy released its most recent analysis of the expected total carbon dioxide emissions from fuel-cell vehicles in 2035, including the emissions associated with making hydrogen from natural gas, compressing it, and transporting it. The analysis shows that the cars will emit less than half as much carbon dioxide as conventional gasoline-powered vehicles do now. Fuel-cell vehicles could also be a boon to renewable energy by helping to address their intermittency. One option being considered is to use excess wind power generated at night, when demand is low, to electrolyze water, making hydrogen. Sperling says using hydrogen as a way to store excess renewable energy makes sense. There are other promising routes to low-carbon hydrogen production, such as engineering plants to produce hydrogen from sunlight directly. A2Z METALWORKER

Investment in equipment and software is expected to grow 4.8 percent in 2013, according to the Q3 update to the 2013 Equipment Leasing & Finance U.S. Economic Outlook released today by the Equipment Leasing & Finance Foundation. The Foundation decreased its 2013 forecast from the 5.6 percent growth predicted in its Q2 Outlook, due to slightly slower than expected growth in investment in the first and second quarters. However, the Q3 report predicts equipment investment will grow steadily over the next six months across most verticals due to reduced policy uncertainty and strong underlying economic fundamentals. The report, which is focused on the $725 billion equipment leasing and finance industry, forecasts equipment investment and capital spending in the United States and evaluates the effects of various related and external factors in play currently and into the foreseeable future. According to the Foundation report, the U.S. economy is in its strongest position since the 2008-09 recession, but growth remains subpar. The economy continues to be buffeted by multiple headwinds, including high oil prices, weak global growth, fiscal consolidation and uncertainty about future fiscal reforms and other federal policies. However, the Foundation reports that the underlying fundamental growth drivers of the U.S. economy are in better shape than in recent years. The report predicts growth will pick up in the second half of the year due to an improving housing market and auto sales, an energy renaissance, reshoring of manufacturing, improving credit availability and rising employment. William G. Sutton, CAE, President of the Foundation and President

and CEO of the Equipment Leasing and Finance Association, said, “In the Q3 U.S. Economic Outlook, we have adjusted our equipment investment growth projection to reflect the current environment. Highlights from the study include: • The U.S. economy is expected to generate positive but modest growth of 2.0 percent in 2013, a pace similar to 2012. • Equipment and software investment slowed in Q1 2013 to 4.1 percent (annualized), reflecting some of the headwinds facing the U.S. economy. In Q1, the sector was driven by strength in computers and software and in construction equipment. Q2 looked slightly weaker than Q1, but growth is expected to pick up in the second half of the year, with an overall forecast of 4.8 percent year-over-year growth in equipment and software investment in 2013. • Credit market conditions continue to improve, and many indicators have returned to levels not seen since the onset of the recession.

David Loveridge and the team at Loveridge Machine are running a very good business, and they make some very complex parts and casting molds. David just wishes he had purchased PowerMILL by Delcam much earlier than he did. His team does too, as their on the job stress level is reduced significantly since they switched from their previous CAM system to Delcam’s PowerMILL. It took a deluge of orders, about 10 to be exacts, that came in all at once, all requiring 5 axis machining, that pushed the company into action and to immediately purchase PowerMILL. David says, “We were working on a critical job, a match plate (used to make molds for casting) with our previous CAM software and it wasn’t giving us the tool paths we needed. The job required 5 axis machining, which many of the CAM Systems can handle, but with most 5-axis machining, the CAM Systems require a lot of trial and error, and programming takes weeks to get it right. With PowerMILL, we immediately got it right, and where it often took about 4 days to

program a match plate, with PowerMILL we are now down to 3 hours!” He continued, “Unlike most CAM packages, PowerMILL allows the programmer full editing rights of its post processors.” David says he is extensively using macros with his new CAM package. He elaborated, “ With the help of Delcam’s support, our post is just about perfect 3 months into using the software. With the old system post edits were not possible and took years to get right.” Generally speaking, it is not ideal to convert to a new CAM software system while nearing deadline on several critical, high precision projects. But, when the software isn’t working for the job, as was the case at Loveridge Machine, there was little choice but to make the switch. Blaine Duke, Regional Manager for Delcam, says, “We had to introduce PowerMILL to Dave differently than we normally A2Z METALWORKER

bring new customers on board. Typically, the new Delcam client attends a training class at one of our North American training centers, and these classes are 1 week in duration. Then, after the customer has had some time to work on their specific products back at their facility, a Delcam Applications Engineer provides custom training at the customers’ facility. This individualized training is normally a week long.” He continued, “With Dave we immediately assigned him an application engineer who worked with Dave in a couple of web meetings, which in total encompassed about 3 hours. Then Dave wanted all of the PowerMILL training materials, which we don’t typically provide to customers until they’ve completed the training (we don’t want them to get frustrated with what they haven’t learned yet). Not only did our Applications Engineer, Robert Kobielski, say that Dave was too advanced for our basic training, he recommended that we provide our training materials to Dave right away, as he was picking up the software so well, and he was clearly superior at self learning.” Dave additionally worked with Delcam Applications Engineer Dicken Smith for 1.5 days for his onsite training, and he says this training was outstanding. David is not your typical machinist or machine shop owner. He is passionate about programming, and while his wife may not like it, he spends countless hours each weekend improving his programming talents. He says he evaluated 8 CAM packages before making the decision to switch to a new supplier. David says, “There were 2 finalists, Delcam’s PowerMILL and one other. I contacted both companies to learn about their pricing and their business models. With the other CAM package, you leased the license, and you had to pay to renew it annually. This was clearly not what we wanted to do, as the cost over the life of the software would be much too expensive for us, and we just plain didn’t like this model.” Blaine says that Delcam offers maintenance options that provide increasing software benefits to the user. Updates to CD releases, typically at least twice a year, are easily downloadable from the Delcam update site to maintenance customers. These regular releases ensure that they are kept up to date with the latest developments available in the CADCAM market. With so many regular releases from Delcam users off maintenance can quickly fall behind the latest techniques. Maintenance customers are also provided with access to highly skilled engineers who are able to discuss or demonstrate how to resolve particular problems as well as improve customers’ complete processes. Dave said, “Delcam’s support is outstanding. They have a local support team in Utah, and their staff is so responsive and knowledgeable.Their

post team is equally outstanding. If I have a problem with a post, Randy from the post team is on it and gets me an answer immediately.” He continued, “While the cycle time to run a match plate is the same as it was prePowerMILL, the real savings is because PowerMILL doesn’t gauge or crash, I can now run unattended. The ability to add 12 hours of machining while our team is at home or sleeping, is remarkable! PowerMILL has allowed us to get out of our backlog, which was at the onset, 5000 castings, to nothing. The shop that previously had our customer’s business was delivering 10-100 castings per month.Today, we are delivering 1000-2000 per month, and much of this improvement is a direct result of our PowerMILL CAM package.” David couldn’t be happier with his PowerMILL purchase. It delivered everything he needed to improve the company’s business. “But”, he says, “there was one surprise I got with the software. Our PowerMILL programs are about 1/3 the size of our previous CAM programs. This means we can load the entire code onto the machine at once, since our programs are now 30 Megabytes, versus 110. This saves hours in set-up time.” A Little History about Loveridge Machine Loveridge Machine opened for business in 1975, founded by Dennis Loveridge. Dennis was a gifted machinist, having initially learned the craft in trade school, and subsequently mastering it while working for such companies as Welch Allyn, Jelco Inc. and E-Systems, each employer providing him with manufacturing experience in a different industry.Today, the company is co-owned by Dennis and his oldest son David, and David’s 4 brothers who also work for the company today. Just 2 years after the company opened for business, it expanded into the production machining market, spurred by the company’s internal development of a wheel hub using factory-equipped braking system in the conversion of compact pickup trucks to four-wheel-drive vehicles. The product so impressed Chevrolet that it was included in its Silver Book of after-market products whose use did not void the factory warranty. Today, by design, the company is diversified across a number of industries, including: Automotive, Mining and Energy, Military, Space, and Amusement Parks. Loveridge parts can even be found on the Hubble Telescope. David says, “Many years ago, when there was an economic downturn, Dennis learned the hard way that diversification is critical to a small business’s success, and so we work to ensure that no one industry or customer comprises more than 30% of our business.” You can learn more about Delcam’s CADCAM solutions by calling them at 1-877-DELCAM1, or you can visit their website at delcam.com See what Loveridge Machine can do for you. Corporate.Spending.Set.To. Increase Bloomberg News reports companies have begun to boost capital spending. Orders for capital goods excluding aircraft and military equipment rose 1.5 percent in May, according to the Business Roundtable’s quarterly outlook index.

Mitsubishi:.We’ll. be. a. player.in.regional.jet.market Mitsubishi Aircraft projects airlines will want more than 5,000 regional jets over the next 20 years, and the manufacturer wants a piece of that market. Regional jets already carry half of U.S. airline passengers, funneling travelers from smaller communities to larger cities or connecting flights. Canada’s Bombardier and Brazil’s Embraer have dominated the market for regional jets with 100 seats or fewer. But as demand grows, Mitsubishi is promoting its next plane, the MRJ100X, for fuel efficiency from quieter engines and passenger comfort. The 18-inch seats will be as wide as Boeing’s 787 Dreamliner configured with eight seats in a row. “This really just a smaller-size mainline aircraft,” Howard Thrall, senior vice president for Mitsubishi Aircraft America, told about 70 industry officials and reporters at a Japanese International Transport Institute meeting last month. “That’s why we think this MRJ is going to compete and succeed in a very tough, competitive market.” Mitsubishi is aiming for a test flight by the end of the year and going into service in late 2015 or early 2016. Mitsubishi jets have a range of about 2,000 nautical miles. Airlines worldwide will want 5,280 regional jets over the next two decades, according to Mitsubishi. The company projects nearly one-third will be in North America, and one in five in each of Europe and Asia. The growth is expected even as the fleet of 50-seat jets declines, as airlines abandon them as too small for economical jet-aircraft operations. In their wake, Mitsubishi is forecasting much greater demand for 70-seat to 100-seat jets.

Of concern to potential passengers on the jets,Thrall said the MRJ100 would be able to hold the largest roller bags allowed under International Air Transport Association guidelines, which are 22 inches by 18 inches by 10 inches.

Analyst.Says.Boeing.Has.“Subtle.Advantage”. In.Wide-Body.Market The Puget Sound Business Journal reports Bernstein Research analyst Doug Harned believes Boeing has a “subtle advantage” over Airbus in the wide-body market coming out of the Paris Air Show as Boeing has the 787 and the 777-9X to compete with the A350. Harned said that Boeing likely will rule the low and high ends of the market while the A350 is “strongest in the middle.” However, the article notes Harned does expect “continued strong sales” for both companies. Poll.Demonstrates.Popular.Support.for.Civil. Unmanned.Aircraft.Systems. The Aerospace Industries Association (AIA) released new poll data, showing worldwide public perception of civil and commercial uses for unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) is unmistakably positive. The findings also indicate public opinion that governments should resolve challenges such as perceived privacy issues and UAS airspace regulations in order to increase non-military use. The Christian Science Monitor conducted the poll among its on-line readers. “This poll demonstrates significant support for civilian UAS applications among the populace, both in America and internationally,” said AIA President and CEO Marion C. Blakey. “The U.S. aerospace industry is now escalating its role in supporting government actions that will provide extensive new benefits from UAS.” The poll findings include the following: Only 25 percent of the public is “very well aware” of current and potential non-military uses for UAS Border protection, law enforcement surveillance and search and rescue are the top three perceived, non-military uses for UAS 54 percent of the public favors increased non-military use of UAS (20 A2Z METALWORKER

Privacy and safety are the top issues the public wants government to resolve relative to UAS in order to increase civil use UAS are currently in use in a wide variety of applications worldwide, from monitoring flooding in the Czech Republic to wildlife conservation efforts in South Africa. One area where the United States could see significant benefit is in fighting wildfires – such as the historically damaging fires burning in Colorado last month – because UAS can fly in conditions where human pilots would be unable to see because of the conditions. Safe integration of UAS into the national airspace system is a top priority for industry. “Unmanned aircraft are a natural complement to air traffic control developments like NextGen and SESAR,” said Aurora Flight Sciences Chairman and CEO John S. Langford. “The technology under development will actually make the skies safer for everyone.” “UAS are the future of the aerospace and defense industry, but we need some serious changes in how we license these systems for export in order to compete for that business,” said Frank W. Pace, President, Aircraft Systems Group, General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. “This poll shows public support for a broad range of applications; if we aren’t allowed to build and export these products, we’ll lose jobs and high-tech capabilities in our workforce.” Research indicates the worldwide market for UAS over the next decade would exceed $89 billion and create more than 100,000 jobs. GE. delivers. COTS. rugged. systems. for. US. Army’s.I-BESS GE Intelligent Platforms has delivered its commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) rugged systems to the Georgia Tech Research Institute

(GTRI), which is currently developing an integrated blast effects sensor suite (I-BESS) for the US Army. The company had received a contract from GTRI for supply of 50 systems to serve as the main system for collection of data from IBESS’s two major sub-systems, a soldier-worn unit and a vehicle sensor suite. GE Intelligent Platforms Systems product manager Mac Rothstein said I-BESS is an initiative that will potentially help in enhancing the quality of life of US military personnel. “For a critical program like this, timeliness and risk elimination were key factors - and GE’s COTS rugged systems were able to deliver on both counts,’’ Rothstein said. GE’s COTS rugged systems provide a flexible computing platform for mission applications: including unmanned vehicles, ground vehicles and manned aircraft. “I-BESS is designed to measure the physical environment of an explosion.” Manufactured as part of the Department of Defense’s (DoD) Information Analysis Center programme, I-BESS is designed to measure the physical environment of an explosion, collecting data that will help in understanding the effects of explosions on wounded soldiers. The integrated, time-tagged data captured by the system can later be used by doctors for diagnosis and determination of the best treatment methods for soldiers with concussions or brain injuries, especially traumatic brain injuries. Currently capable of capturing only environmental data, the system is scheduled to undergo further modifications to enhance its ability to monitor heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen and hydration levels, body temperature and EKG activity to enable integrated blast effect research and collection.

Like.the.Tail.of.a.Seahorse,.3D.Printing.Artificial.Armor The seahorse tail’s exceptional flexibility is due to its structure, made up of bony, armored plates, which slide past each other. Researchers are hoping to design, 3D print and use a similar structure to create a flexible robotic arm equipped with muscles made out of polymer, which could be used in medical devices, underwater exploration and unmanned bomb detection and detonation. UC San Diego engineers, led by materials science professors Joanna

McKittrick and Marc Meyers, detailed their findings in the March 2013 issue of the journal Acta Biomaterialia. McKittrick and Meyers took segments from seahorses’ tails and compressed them from different angles. They found that the tail could be compressed by nearly 50 percent of its original width before permanent damage occurred. That’s because the connective tissue between the tail’s bony plates and the tail muscles bore most of the load from the displacement. Even when the tail was compressed by as much as 60 percent, the seahorse’s spinal column was protected from permanent damage. The seahorse’s tail is typically made up of 36 square-like segments, each composed of four L-shaped corner plates that progressively decrease in size along the length of the tail. Plates are free to glide or pivot. Gliding joints allow the bony plates to glide past one another. Pivoting joints are similar to a ball-and-socket joint, with three degrees of rotational freedom. The plates are connected to the vertebrae by thick collagen layers of connective tissue. The joints between plates and vertebrae are extremely flexible with nearly six degrees of freedom. The next step is to use 3D printing to create artificial bony plates, which would then be equipped with polymers that would act as muscles. The final goal is to build a robotic arm that would be a unique hybrid between hard and soft robotic devices. A flexible, yet robust robotic gripper could be used for medical devices, underwater exploration and unmanned bomb detection and detonation. The protected, flexible arm would be able to grasp a variety of objects of different shapes and sizes.

One reason for at least small portion of thatand growth: the returnNews of and information can be found on the Internet at www.atk.com, factory work from overseas. Experts say it’s difficult to accurately on Facebook at www.facebook.com/atk, or on Twitter @ATK. measure the number of jobs tied to work returning from other countries, but some employers say they know it is happening. Reversing A Herd Mentality Howard Hauser, a vice president with Hiawatha Rubber Co., BAE.Systems.Wins.Boeing.737.Max.Work.in. says for a long time, manufacturers followed a herd mentality of sending Commercial.Aircraft.Push work offshore. They all wanted components produced in low-wage, emerging markets like China. “They were looking at the piece price. And it looked like, ’We’re going to to supply save a lot of money,’” he said. BAE Systems won an order flight-control gear to “But Boeing theCo.’s bottom wasjetliner they didn’t nearly as much they thought. That plane is slated to enter service around the end of the decade, with the Max due for first delivery in 2017. “Our spoiler control electronics will help Boeing achieve its goal of improving the handling characteristics for the world’s most advanced single-aisle plane, the 737 MAX,” Ehtisham Siddiqui, vice president and general manager of Commercial Aircraft Solutions at BAE, said. Boeing had booked 1,381 firm orders for the Max through May before securing additional deals at the Paris Air Show last month. Detailed design of the plane is due for completion next year, Boeing said last month. BAE also provides flight control equipment to Bombardier Inc. for the CSeries narrow-body due for its first flight this month.

Abbott.Acquires.Stent.Manufacturer,.Laser. Eye-Surgery.Company The Wall Street Journal reports Abbott Laboratories announced it acquired stent manufacturer IDEV Technologies and laser eyesurgery company OptiMedica Corp. in separate deals for what could be worth up to $710 million. Abbott Medical Devices VP John Capek explained that the company acquired IDEV and OptiMedica to capitalize on the growing obesity and diabetes markets for the aging population. Analysts expect the two diseases, which lead to elevated rates of peripheral artery disease, will propel the vision care industry.

The Wall Street Journal reports on the engineers in the auto industry who track what items people bring into their cars and design places to hold them. While finding space for storage can be difficult, buyers require it, especially as they bring more (and more expensive) electronics into the car with them. However, cellphones and tablets don’t have standard dimensions, and creating or redesigning a car can take four years, much slower than new products are released by electronics companies.

that will enable our space missions while directly benefiting American businesses here on Earth,” he added. NASA’s interest in 3D printing appears to be strong and growing. For example, the space agency is partnering with California company Made in Space to send a 3D printer to the International Space Station next year. And NASA recently funded the development of a prototype “3D pizza printer” that could help feed astronauts on long space journeys, such as the 500-day trek to Mars. 3D printing has been used to craft certain rocket parts before, but usually this form of manufacturing is employed to build less critical components of the complex machines, Aerojet Rocketdyne additive manufacturing program manager Jeff Haynes said. “The injector is the heart of a rocket engine and represents a large portion of the resulting cost of these systems,” Haynes said in a statement. “Today, we have the results of a fully additive manufactured rocket injector with a demonstration in a relevant environment.”

3D-Printed.Rocket.Engine.Part.Passes.Key.NASA.Test A 3D-printed rocket engine injector has passed a major NASA test, potentially heralding a new age of propulsion-system manufacturing, space agency officials say.

NASA and Aerojet Rocketdyne put the injector — which was built using 3D printing (also called “additive manufacturing”) technology — through a series of hot-fire trials, agency officials announced last month. “Hot-fire-testing the injector as part of a rocket engine is a significant accomplishment in maturing additive manufacturing for use in rocket engines,” Carol Tolbert, manager of the Manufacturing Innovation Project at NASA’s Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, Ohio, where the tests were conducted, said in a statement. “3D manufacturing offers opportunities to optimize the fit, form and delivery systems of materials A2Z METALWORKER
