“A sale is not something you pursue, it is something that happens to you while you are immersed in serving your customers.” Author Unknown I don’t know about you, but I am bothered that in the last few years it seems like every fast food/counter service establishment puts out a tip jar. Or, if you are paying by credit card, the receipt you sign has a very visible place to add your tip. And while I don’t believe fast food establishments should look for a tip (they are simply doing what they are paid to do much as a store clerk does), nonetheless I always add to the tip jar. While in Salt Lake City recently, I stopped at a Rubio Mexican Grill for lunch for a quick in and out salad, which the staff said they would bring to my seat. While I was eating, I noticed that not only did the employees bring each patron their food; they stopped by to check on their customers, brought over napkins or salsa, or whatever their customer was missing. Mind you, this is a fast food restaurant. As I watched the 4-5 employees taking turns checking on their customers, all with smiles, I was quite impressed with the cheerful attitude and helpful service. It dawned on me that I didn’t recall seeing a tip jar at the front counter. So as I left, I came back to the counter and asked where should I leave a tip? The young cheerful lady told me “We don’t accept tips here.”Wow, better service than any fast food restaurant I’ve been in, and they don’t want tips? This experience lingered with me for several days, and it made me aware of how customers were being treated everywhere I went. It additionally spurred me to look at some telling statistics for business owners on the importance of superior customer satisfaction. Here are some telling facts: 91% of unhappy customers will never purchase services from you again. For every customer who bothers to complain, there are 26 others who remain silent. 70% of complaining customers will do business with you again if you resolve the complaint in their favor. 96.7% of unhappy customers never let out even a squeak of dissatisfaction to the organization that has given them bad service, according to research they will tell at least 15 other people, while satisfied ones will tell six at the most. Almost 70% of the identifiable reasons why customers left typical companies had nothing to do with the product. The prevailing reason for switching was poor quality of service. These are all great companies, and I think most of us can agree our experiences with them are positive. But because the Zogby survey is a national study, it only ranks industry giants. I believe that it is often the smaller companies that really go out of their way for customer service because this is their competitive advantage against the larger companies.
All photos and copy become the property of A2Z Metalworker.
In a Zogby poll taken this year, the following companies were ranked as best in customer satisfaction:
Keep up on that superior customer service! It is not only good for your customers, but it helps your bottom line. Until next issue, I wish you well. God bless our troops!

Metal.Supermarkets®.Opens.In.Wheat.Ridge,.CO Metal Super markets®, the world’s largest supplier of small quantity metals, opened its first franchise store in Colorado on June 3, the 63rd location in the franchise network. Wheat Ridge residents Steve and Carolyn Senger will be providing area businesses and consumers with superior customer service and the highest quality metal products available at their Metal Supermarkets store located at 11405 W I-70 Frontage Rd. North, Wheat Ridge, CO, 80033. Customers can buy any size or type of metal they need, quickly and easily, and with no minimum order requirement. “We are excited to introduce Metal Supermarkets to Colorado and look forward to working with the Sengers to further expand the Metal Supermarkets brand,” says Stephen Schober, Metal Supermarkets President and CEO. “With so much industry in the greater Denver area, the Wheat Ridge store is in a great position to thrive.” As a mechanical engineer, Steve Senger moved around the Midwest for job opportunities. He and his family wanted to settle down somewhere close to relatives where they could establish their own business and permanent home. The Sengers were looking for a rock-solid, stable business that fills an unmet need in the marketplace. With a background in engineering and management, the Sengers believe the Metal Supermarkets system is a good fit for them. “We really like Wheat Ridge and the store has a great location off I-70,” says Steve Senger. “There is a gap in distribution chain in metals industry. As an engineer, do-it-yourselfer and hobbyist, I’ve seen the need for Metal Supermarkets first-hand. I am excited to be leading the way in Colorado and meet the demand for cut-to-size metals.” A2Z METALWORKER

machines as part of the drive to make PowerINSPECT the preferred inspection software for all types of metrology equipment. It also offers unique dual-device inspection options that allow measurement with two portable devices at the same time. PowerINSPECT is believed to be the only inspection software that supports simultaneous operation of different types of device, including laser scanning, from different manufacturers. Other enhancements in recent releases include improved handling of point-cloud data, group editing of probing parameters, graphical editing of boundaries for raster-based inspection, and easier measurement and marking out when using PowerINSPECT for clay modelling. Once created, curves can be exported as polylines as well as to the previously-available NURBS format. This enhancement is part of a general increase in the ability to export surface and geometric items for use in modelling applications, with VDA export added to the existing IGES format. October 1st sees Sandvik Coromant introduce GC4325; a new-generation coated cemented-carbide grade for steel turning. This latest innovation in tool material provides a new, higher potential for increasing cutting speeds and a longer, more predictable tool life with very high reliability, over an extended broad ISO P25 application area. Predictability has become increasingly important in today’s machining, especially where there is limited supervision in production. There are always a number of threats to the edge line remaining intact long enough in steel turning. One challenge is the breadth of the ISO P25 application area, which includes several very different materials, from ductile low-carbon steels to high-alloy hard steels, bar material to forgings, castings to pre-machined parts. The advances with the new grade, GC4325, will actually help users resist holding back on cutting-data levels. The grade provides extremely high process security through its ability to retain an intact edge line. Withstands higher temperatures The insert substrate and coating of GC4325 have been developed to better withstand high temperatures, thereby reducing the effect that causes excessive wear. As a bonus, the grade is highly capable of maintaining the insert edge line at higher temperatures, which translates into the capability for higher cutting speeds with added security through more predictable, longer tool life. At issue is whether and how the service will proceed with buying a new anti-ship missile capable of operating inside enemy ship defenses and without cues from the GPS system. Lockheed Martin officials are hoping the service will forgo a competition and move ahead with further development of the LongRange Anti-Ship Missile (Lrasm), a variant of the Air Force-led Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missile (Jassm), a stealthy cruise missile designed to travel beyond 500 nm for land targets. “There is a range of bad options,” says Frank St. John, vice president of tactical missiles for Lockheed Martin. They include systems that are very “long in the tooth,” he says. The company intends to deliver the Lrasm for “well under $2 million” per unit, he adds. The missile shares 85% common parts to Jassm-ER, he says. This longer-range variant of the missile is built off of the 200-nm Jassm, which had technical and production challenges in its development. As a result, its price once crept up to about $1 million per missile, far over the planned unit cost. Lockheed won the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency’s (Darpa) contract in 2009 to develop Lrasm. This is the Navy’s standard shipbased launch system. During the

When we first heard about the Solar Power Satellite via Arbitrarily Large Phased Array (SPS-ALPHA) – a proposed flower shaped solar power energy collector that beams down concentrated microwave energy back to Earth – it sounded absolutely preposterous. Now in a recent interview with Motherboard, John Mankins, a NASA veteran from Artemis Innovation Management Solutions, divulged some more details on exactly how the world’s first practical orbital solar plant will work when it hopefully launches by 2025. Mankins explains that the SPS-ALPHA is much more approachable than the idea of a solar plant in space first conceived in the 1970s. This new 21st century satellite employs much more efficient solar technology as well as smaller modules that act together like a swarm of ants. The SPS-ALPHA is equipped with a large array of thin-film mirrors to reflect and concentrate sunlight directly onto a central photovoltaic element on the back of the satellite’s array. Once the satellite processes the solar energy, it beams back the energy as microwaves in the form of radio waves. Back on earth, Mankins says Artemis Innovation Management Solutions will build a massive microwave receiver dish about 3.7 to five miles in diameter, positioned three to six miles above the ground. Despite the collector’s massive size, Mankins says it would barely affect the surrounding wildlife. The dish could even be hung over farmland – like the Arecibo Telescope – without impacting the ecology underneath the dish. Manikins says the team of scientists considered beaming the energy back to Earth as a higher frequency laser to reduce the size of the transmitter on the satellite and receiver on Earth. But the high frequency blasts could be damaging to eyesight and potentially ignite fires or explosions. “Think about the Death Star,” Mankins warned in an interview with Motherboard. The risk factor outweighs the seductive, compact grace offered by lasers. After all, nobody wants Earth to go the way of Alderaan. As for when this project will actually take off, Mankins hopes to rapidly prototype the SPS-ALPHA in three year increments with a fourth generation prototype finally launching in 2025. However, he says there are still many hurdles to face, including developing materials that can cool quickly in space. Nonetheless, the team hopes to reduce the cost of energy down to 10 cents per kilowatt hour—about two cents less than the average US citizen pays.

Pratt,.DoD.Reach.Agreement.on.F-35.Engine. Lot The Pentagon has reached an agreement in principle with Pratt & Whitney on the sixth batch of jet engines for the F-35 joint strike fighter, and the company hopes to submit a proposal for its next batch within 30 days. The contract will cover the production of 36 F135 engines, along with two spares. Official cost details are still being worked out, but it will likely be similar to the $1 billion agreement for the fifth lowrate initial production (LRIP-5) lot reached in May. “In general, the unit prices for the 32 common configuration engines, which are used to power both the conventional takeoff and landing (CTOL) aircraft and the aircraft-carrier variant (CV) aircraft, [were] reduced in LRIP 6 by roughly 2.5 percent compared to the previous LRIP 5 contract for 35 engines,” wrote officials from the Pentagon’s F-35 Joint Program Office (JPO) in a statement. “The unit prices for the 6 short takeoff and vertical landing (STOVL) aircraft engines [were] reduced in LRIP 6 by roughly 9.6 percent compared to the previous LRIP 5 contract for 3 STOVL engines.”

“This agreement represents a fair deal for Government and Pratt & Whitney,” US Air Force Lt. Gen. Chris Bogdan, the F-35 program executive officer, said in an official statement. “Driving down cost is critical to the success of this program and we are working together – in each successive contract – to lower costs for the propulsion system.” The agreement closes negotiations on low-rate initial production (LRIP) lot six of engines. Lockheed Martin, the F-35’s prime contractor, announced an agreement July 30 for the production of lots six and seven of the single-engine stealth warplane, although a Lockheed spokeswoman confirmed the agreement has yet to be finalized. The two buys cover the production of 71 new jets, including the first models built for Italy, Australia and Norway. LRIP-6 procures 18 F-35A conventional takeoff models for the US Air Force, six F-35B jump-jet variants for the US Marine Corps and seven F-35C carrier models for the US Navy, as well as three F-35As for Italy and two F-35As for Australia. Deliveries of this block would begin in mid-2014. With the LRIP-6 engine agreement in place, Pratt is hoping to build on the momentum to complete a joint package of LRIP-7 and LRIP-8 engines early next year. Deliveries of LRIP-6 engines are set to begin in the fourth quarter of this year. Overall, Pratt has delivered 107 production engines.

The Unmanned Systems 2013 conference attracted 593 exhibitors and 8,000 registered attendees to the Washington, D.C., Convention Center, according to the sponsoring Association of Unmanned Vehicle Systems International. The next steps toward wider introduction of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) into the U.S. airspace system were within line of sight as the industry gathered for its largest conference last month in Washington, D.C. Federal government officials said that a long-delayed proposed rulemaking for operations of small UAS weighing up to 55 pounds will be released by the end of the year. Also by year-end, the FAA will designate six UAS test ranges in a program sought by 24 states. The two steps are a prelude to meeting the requirement expressed by Congress in the 2012 FAA Modernization and Reform Act that UAS be safely introduced into the U.S. National Airspace System by September 2015, enabling commercial operations beyond the governmental and scientific missions the FAA has already approved. “During the last two decades, the FAA has authorized limited use (of UAS) for important missions in the public interest, things like firefighting, disaster relief, search-and-rescue, law enforcement, border patrol and more,” said John Porcari, U.S. Department of Transportation deputy secretary. “Now, we’re setting out to integrate unmanned aerial systems into our national airspace. The 2015 deadline that has been mandated by Congress is an ambitious one, but we’re working hard toward meeting it and we’re committed to getting it right.”

A questioner asked Porcari if the federal government’s efforts to develop “sense and avoid” technology for UAS to help them detect nearby aircraft that do not have transponders might better be spent on equipping GA aircraft with automatic dependent surveillancebroadcast (ADS-B) transmitters, which the government has mandated by 2020. “As someone who learned to fly in the Stinson 108 without a radio, [I recognize] there’s still a large fleet out there that is important to our aviation system that is not equipped,” he responded. “It is possible that a broader program of equipage for ADS-B or other means might help. But I think we need to look at the realistic possibility that in the entire spectrum of aviation for the foreseeable future, there are going to be aircraft that are not equipped for in-time sense and avoid and through policies and procedures we’re going to have to find ways to accommodate that. But I will tell you we are sensitive to the [ADS-B] cost issue for general aviation.”

N A S A . t o . c o n d u c t. helicopter. crash. test. at. Langley.Research.Center.in. Hampton NASA researchers are planning to drop part of a military helicopter from about 30 feet to test improved seat belts and seats. The experiment at Langley Research Center in Hampton will involve a 45-foot-long fuselage from a former Marine helicopter being dropped onto a bed of soil. Lead test engineer Martin Annett says nearly 40 cameras positioned inside and outside will record how 13 crash test dummies react before, during and after impact. The helicopter will hit the ground at about 30 miles an hour under conditions that are meant to be severe, but survivable.
The FVL‐1250VTC is perfect for heavy‐duty turning applications. And with the optional live tooling function and the series offers additional flexible machining capabilities to make more complex workpieces with one machine. The cross‐rail elevation system uses two large ballscrews for positioning and can be locked in any position with four independent hydraulic break systems. The result: The spindle RAM is able to more closely approach a workpiece, thus eliminating an overhang problem. The unique patent lock mechanism has eight hydraulic locking cylinders with curvic coupling to assure the turning holder is perfectly stationary on RAM. You get highly rigidity without vibration or cutting chatter. Plus no transfer of stress on the RAM spindle bearings, which substantially prolongs spindle life. It’s powerful. The enormous 60HP FANUC digital spindle motor, with a two‐speed gearbox, generates up to 11,461Nm of torque in lower 37rpm. The optional Live Tooling models can easily handle up to M30 tap or 50mm drill with tough material. What does real POWER look like? Call your local dealer to see our comprehensive product line for all your machining needs.
The test is a joint effort of NASA, the Navy, Army and the Federal Aviation Administration. The research ultimately will be used to try to design better and safer helicopters.
Pace. of. U.S.. Manufacturing.Hit.2-year.Peak.in.Aug. U.S. factories expanded last month at the fastest pace since June 2011 on a jump in orders. The report signals that manufacturing output could strengthen in coming months. cmi_FVL-1250VTC_full_4clr_a2z.indd 1
The Institute for Supply Management, a trade group of purchasing managers, said Tuesday that its manufacturing index rose to 55.7 in August from 55.4 in July. That topped the index’s 12-month average of 52. A reading above 50 indicates growth.

broad-based growth, with 15 out of 18 industries reporting expansion and only one reporting contraction. That suggests that factory production could accelerate this year.
6/25/13 2:44 PM
“The data unambiguously point to a pickup in … manufacturing output growth after a weak” second quarter, Jim O’Sullivan, an economist at High Frequency Economics, said in a note to clients.
A gauge of new orders rose nearly five points to 63.2, the highest level in more than two years. At the same time, production increased more slowly than in July, and factories added jobs at a weaker rate. Despite the drop, production reached its highest level in 2½ years.
The Federal Reserve will closely examine the report, which comes two weeks before Fed policymakers will decide whether to slow their bond-buying program. Chairman Ben Bernanke has said the Fed will scale back its purchases this year if the economy continues to strengthen. The $85 billion in monthly bond purchases have been intended to keep interest rates low.
The overall improvement contrasts with other recent reports that had pointed to a slowdown in manufacturing. The ISM’s survey found
The jobs report for August is the most important remaining economic report the Fed will consider. A2Z METALWORKER

J.M. Grisley Machine Tools, Inc. Your 4th Generation Machine Tool Dealer Thanks Its Loyal Customers For More Than 8 Decades Serving Them It is fair to say that the machine tool industry runs in the Grisley’s blood. James Marion Grisley started the family business 86 years ago in Salt Lake City, UT. Hence, the name J.M. Grisley,Today, Lars Grisley, 4th generation member, is general manager and vice president of the company, and he runs it with the support of his father and mentor, James Robert (Jim) Grisley (3rd generation). It is also fair to say that you will be hard pressed to find a machine tool dealer anywhere in the country that has roots that go back nearly a century in this industry. And you can be confident of a well-planned succession plan at J.M. Grisley. Indeed, there is longevity. Let’s start from the beginning. J.M. learned the machining trade as a young man during his years of service in the US Navy, fixing whatever needed to be repaired or maintained on the ship. How J.M. Grisley actually got its start is quite interesting. After serving in the Navy, J.M. was hired into a sales position with the Cleveland Rock Drill Company, selling pneumatic tools to the mining industry. J.M. was well versed in mills and lathes, and even owned a couple. (The machine tool apprentice book J.M. studied from remains in the J.M. Grisley offices today and is pictured on the cover.) One day one of his customers asked J.M. to help him find a lathe for his shop. J.M. accepted the challenge, and sent a letter to the R. K. LeBlond MachineTool Company with the request on behalf of his customer. After weeks of back and forth mail communications (sadly, the Internet wasn’t available at the time), J.M. boarded a train from Salt Lake City to Cincinnati, Ohio to secure the deal. Side Note: In 1887, R. K. LeBlond founded the R. K. LeBlond Machine Tool Company. In 1996, LeBlond Makino Machine Tool Company changed its name to Makino. J.M. just didn’t make the sale for his customer. He did better than that; he came back to Salt Lake City with a contract to handle both the R.K. LeBlond and the Cincinnati machine tool lines in the Western United States. J.M. came from a hardworking family, and they didn’t have a lot of money. In fact, during the years of the depression, Bob was sent to his grandparent’s house in Colorado each summer, just so he would have enough to eat. As an adult, and newly married to Helen Fraker, J.M. was determined to make a good living for his family, and he was blessed not just with the gift of machining, but also the entrepreneurial bug. With both the R.K. LeBlond and the Cincinnati machine tool lines in place, J.M. Grisley opened for business in 1927. He traveled extensively during the early years of the business, given the large geography he was charted with. It was on a business trip 60 years ago, in 1953, which ended the J.M. founder’s era with his unexpected and untimely death. J.M. and Helen had a daughter and a son, and son Robert James (Bob), took over the Grisley business, as the 2nd generation Grisley family member. JM is pictured on the cover sitting on his Harley Davidson. Bob was well prepared to take over the machine tool business. Like his father, Bob served in the Navy and learned the machining trade. He shared his father’s entrepreneurial spirit too, and at the age of 15 he was making parts for customers with the mill and lathe he owned in his parents’ home. When the parts were finished, he would bicycle them over to his customers. Over the years, Bob married Florence (Mette by her Danish name), and the 2 had five children, 4 boys and 1 girl. Two of their children continued the Grisley tradition of machining. Peter and Jim studied the trade at the Bonneville Machine School, which coincidentally started next door to where J.M. Grisley resides today. While Peter worked in the family business for a time, he has since pursued other interests. Jim, however, remains active in the business today. Jim says, “Sadly I didn’t get to know our founder and my great grandfather, J.M., as he passed away when I was just 1 year old. But his legacy lives on today in our family business, and we are grateful A2Z METALWORKER

that he gave us this opportunity. ” Jim and his wife Mary Lane raised 3 children, 2 girls and a boy. Helen, the middle child, followed in her mother’s footsteps in the field of education. In fact, Mary Lane is an Assistant Principal still helping educate our youth today. The Grisley’s youngest, Colleen, took a different course in her life, studying business in college in San Francisco, CA, and subsequently making her life with a successful career and her new husband there. Son Lars, the oldest, is an integral part of the family business. “It didn’t start that way”, Jim says, “by both my design and by Lars’ plans.” After college, Lars worked for companies in Chicago and in the Midwest. It wasn’t until 2003 that he came into the business. Jim says, “When Lars asked if I was ready to bring him into the business, I told him I’ve been ready for a long time now!” Jim knows he made the right decision with Lars, allowing him to work for other companies before coming to the family business. “Lars brings sales, research, and communications into our business. He additionally put in place our back-office operations support system with the addition of Amcheck, a specialty company providing payroll, accounting and other financial support.” J.M. Grisley believes not only believes in
longevity, but they additionally value loyalty. They were awarded the Doosan Machine tool line more than 25 years ago, in 1986. Jim says, “We were the first distributor for Doosan in the U.S., and it has been a very successful partnership ever since.” In fact, J.M Grisley was recently awarded the ‘Outstanding Sales Performance’ award by Doosan for the past 2 consecutive years. Jim and Lars value the Doosan brand, not just because of its 100+ years of experience, not just because they are the 2nd largest machine tool builder in the world (based on production capability), but because they provide superior service to J.M. Grisley and their customers. Lars says, “At Doosan’s US Headquarters, in Pine brook, New Jersey, Doosan has a 65,000 square foot building, of which 40,000 and over 25 million dollars in stock are dedicated to parts. This means that they can deliver 98% of parts to customers overnight. This is outstanding.” Doosan additionally supports its customers with tech centers in Chicago, Los Angeles, Memphis and Dallas. Jim adds, “Doosan is extremely good to their distributors -- “they listen to their customers feedback. It’s like our customers have a direct line to the factory.” Lars continued, “Every Doosan machine is built by a lead builder, and they can track down to the factory employee who built a particular machine. Also, everything that the machine is comprised of comes from the Doosan factory; they don’t outsource components to China.” J. M. Grisley is the de-facto industry expert in grinding in the Intermountain west region. They took on the Studers/United Grinding line nearly 2 decades ago. While Jim was no expert in grinding equipment, he says, “I took it on speculatively and thought ‘Let’s see where this goes’.” Today, the company has several dozens of grinding machines installed in the region with major aerospace customers. J.M.Grisley carries a number of prestigious machine tool lines, in addition to Doosan and United Grinding, including Tornos, Mitsui Seiki, Southwestern Industries (for more than 20 years now), FBT (Italian company who manufactures – horizontal high accuracy boring mills and gantry machines) , and Jet Edge (waterjets). Here from some of J.M. Grisley’s customers! “I have 7 Doosan machines from J.M. Grisley, and in fact nearly all of my lathes are Doosan. I continue to buy from them because not only are the machines outstanding, but J.M. Grisley’s support is outstanding! They stand by us, and they are great on turnaround for parts we need. I really value the fact that J.M. Grisley is local to my business (in Salt Lake City).” Owner, Precision Machining Shop “We have several Doosan lathes and mills from J.M. Grisley. We like the Doosans because they are solid, reliable, and really good for our larger cuts. Grisley added in-house service a few years ago, and we find that to be outstanding. Our latest purchase, the Doosan DNM 350 5-axis machine, is reducing our cycle time by 40%.We like that this machine comes with automatic tool measurement, and a spindle head cooling system for improved thermal stability. The machine also has Doosan thermal compensation to reduce the effects of thermal growth, which is critical to 5-axis accuracy. It’s just a great machine!” Operations Manager, Precision Machining Shop “I’ve been working with Jim Grisley for 20 years, since I was at my previous employer. I think the Doosan machines are the best value - well priced with superior speed and rigidity. Generally speaking, I can’t comment on Grisley’s service, because our machines just don’t go down, though I know that two years ago, they added an in-house service department. One of our older Doosans has been running 24x7 for 6 years now. I learned my lesson, though, when I bought a used Doosan out of Florida. I had problems immediately with the spindle. Lars stepped in, even though he hadn’t sold me the machine, and got me fixed up. Lars is a chip off the old block, just like his dad Jim. They are really great!” Owner, Precision Aerospace Manufacturer To learn more about J.M. Boeing.Automates.777X.line According to news reports, Boeing is looking at new methods for automating the 777X line. The goal is to reduce labor and speed production. The Seattle Times reports that “Inside a boat warehouse in Anacortes, Boeing is quietly setting up tests of new advanced automation methods for building its soon-to-be-launched 777X jet.”The article also reports that there is both a detailed plan to keep production in the company’s Everett facility along with an option to build sections in Japan. “The hush-hush project reveals Boeing intends to dramatically change the way the plane’s metal hull is built, reducing manual labor on that task while ramping up the overall production rate.” According to the article, Boeing is expected to formally launch the 777X program this fall. In turn, this will trigger a development program employing “thousands of engineers in Everett….More than 3,000 Boeing employees now work directly on the 777 or support its production.” According to KING 5 News “The company has not determined where it will build the new 777X yet. Major airlines have already expressed eager interest in buying it.” In related news, GE announced testing composite fan blades on its GE9X. “GE Aviation has begun testing on its new composite fan blades for the GE9X, the next-generation GE90 engine that will power Boeing’s 777X aircraft. This validation test is the first of several testing programs GE has planned this year for the GE9X fan module….”The GE9X fan blade will feature new high-strength carbon fiber material and a steel alloy leading edge,” said Bill Millhaem, general manager of
the GE90 Program at GE Aviation. “This new material, along with a higher fan tip speed, will improve the efficiency of the low-pressure turbine (LPT) and deliver more than 1.5% fuel efficiency improvement compared to the GE90-115B engine.”
McKinstry.Partners.With.City.of.Golden.on. Solar.Project GOLDEN, CO--The City of Golden will move significantly closer to its renewable energy goals with a new solar photovoltaic (PV) project, managed and delivered by McKinstry. The project was approved at the Aug. 22 City Council meeting. Coupled with earlier work by McKinstry, around 10 percent of the City’s energy use will come from renewable energy. “Golden is a leader in renewable energy and energy efficiency in Colorado,” said Phillip Saieg, McKinstry’s project lead. Solar panels will be placed at nine City facilities including the Tony Grampsas Gymnasium, the City’s maintenance shops, Splash at Fossil Trace, the 1250 Jackson Street Parking Garage, and the Public Works and Planning Building. McKinstry completed a series of energy efficiency measures at City facilities in 2009, including solar pool heating, a Community Center pool lighting retrofit, and heating and building comfort optimization and improvements. Technology, global competitiveness and outsourcing put manufacturing on life support in America, but after touring small towns and cities across the country and talking to business leaders who still manufacture their products domestically, we are confident that manufacturing is not dying in America but on the cusp of resurgence. But for manufacturing to succeed, the business community, institutions of higher education, policymakers and consumers need to make some major changes. Many of us have the image of a post-World War II-era assembly line, but times have changed and our modern facilities require individuals that can work with sophisticated machinery. In fact, as we toured 32 cities in 32 days on our American manufacturing bus tour, the majority of manufacturers from towns like Tupelo, Miss., and Warren, Penn., complained that there are jobs available but there is a lack of eligible candidates with specialty degrees who are trained to work for the factories. So, how do we educate and train young adults to be workforceready? Jobs are a key barometer for the economy. Twenty years ago, U.S. manufacturers employed 17 million Americans; today that number stands at 12 million. To compete with these steadily dropping numbers, we need to provide the apprenticeship training necessary for a new generation of American worker to grow as fast as our technology is changing. And there are innovative schools out there that are teaching young adults the skills necessary to operate new machinery and programs. In schools like Ranken Technical College in St. Louis, Mo., students are being trained on cutting-edge equipment for jobs in the construction and manufacturing industries. ‘Made in the USA’ is back . The proof is in the data. These schools have a nearly 98% placement rate and often work with local businesses to employ graduates in hometown companies. Although education leads to employment, consumers have to be willing to buy American. Free-range chickens, local oranges and organic avocados in your grocery store. We are largely conscious consumers in that we increasingly research where our food is produced, yet too many Americans don’t take the time to research and demand their t-shirts, jeans and everyday living necessities are made domestically. And some of this burden falls on the manufacturers and storeowners who need to promote the “Made in America” brand. The perfect example of a major company producing in America is the athletic shoe company New Balance. While critics make the claim that American-made products are more expensive, New Balance sneakers are competitively priced to foreign-made shoes like Nike. But what role does Washington D.C. have in this movement? Better yet, what should they be doing to keep jobs in America? Instead of burying the responsibility in the halls of the U.S. Depart-
ment of Commerce, we agree with many scholars and thought leaders that there should be a separate agency focused on manufacturing. A U.S. Department of Manufacturing could create national standards, guidelines and incentives for manufacturers. As filmmakers, we get tax incentives for making our movies in certain states. Why not do the same for manufacturing companies? Tax incentives would keep U.S. companies from outsourcing and lure jobs back from overseas. In fact, this idea of bringing companies back to America would help bring almost five million jobs to our shores by 2020, reducing our stagnant unemployment rate by three percentage points. And some — unfortunately, few — are fighting for U.S. jobs in the Halls of Congress. Scott Paul, president of Alliance for American Manufacturing, a partnership made up of American manufacturers and the United Steelworkers union, has offered great ideas on how to improve our manufacturing policy overseas. He’s called for a refocus on “trade agenda by giving American businesses new tools to counter China’s currency manipulation, industrial subsidies, intellectual property theft and barriers to market access.”

Our country is eager to re-energize U.S. manufacturing and in some towns they are already taking the necessary steps. We are hopeful that success stories slowly coming out of our small and large cities will help motivate a united effort by consumers, educators, the business community and policy makers to bring jobs back to America.

The New York Times (reports that the Commerce Department on last month released its second look at second quarter gross domestic product, revising it sharply upward to a 2.5% annual rate from an originally reported 1.7% rate. The figure “is based on more complete data than was available last month,” and is well above the 2.2% rate expected by economists. The Times says that an increase in exports and services was larger than thought last month, while the increase in imports was smaller.
The Wall Street Journal reports on the growth of remote monitoring of factory equipment by firms such as Rockwell Automation, General Electric, Emerson Electric, and ABB. The monitoring is sold as a means of preventing problems from developing and also making production more efficient. The services are particularly popular at plants that are distant from metropolitan areas or are dangerous or unpleasant places to work. A Rockwell spokesman explained that with well-placed sensors, the remote engineers should be able to spot problems as they are building and prevent them from becoming significant.

U.S..Unconventional.Oil.and.Gas.Revolution. to.Increase.Disposable.Income.and.Boost.U.S.. Trade.Position,.New.IHS.Study.Says The economic and employment contributions from U.S. unconventional oil and gas production are now being felt throughout the U.S. economy, increasing household incomes, boosting trade and contributing to a new increase in U.S. competitiveness in the world economy, a new study by IHS finds. Unconventional oil and gas activity increased disposable income by an average of $1,200 per U.S. household in 2012 as savings from lower energy costs were passed along to consumers in the form of lower energy bills as well as lower costs for all other goods and services. That figure is expected to grow to just over $2,000 in 2015 and reach more than $3,500 in 2025, the study says. U.S. trade position will continue to improve, owing to the significant reduction in energy imports and the increased global competiveness of U.S.-based energy-intensive industries, the study says. Driven by a rise in domestic production and manufacturing that will displace imports, as well as a favorable export position for these industries, the trade deficit will be reduced by more than $164 billion in 2020—equivalent to one-third of the current U.S. trade deficit. The new study widens the breadth of the research to include the full energy value chain (upstream, midstream and downstream energy and energy-related chemicals) and the overall macroeconomic contributions on the manufacturing sector and broader U.S. economy. Midstream and downstream unconventional energy and energy-related chemicals activity currently support nearly 377,000 jobs throughout the economy, the study finds. Combined with upstream activity, the entire unconventional oil and gas value chain currently supports more than 2.1 million jobs. Total jobs supported by this value chain will rise to more than 3.3 million in 2020 and reach nearly 3.9 million by 2025, the study says.

“The unconventional oil and gas revolution is not only an energy story, it is also a very big economic story that flows throughout the U.S. economy in a way that is only now becoming apparent,” said Daniel Yergin, IHS Vice Chairman and author of The Quest: Energy, Security and the Remaking of the Modern World. “In addition to significant job and economic impacts from energy production and its extensive supply chains, the growth of long-term, low-cost energy supplies is benefiting households and helping to revitalize U.S. manufacturing, creating a competitive advantage for U.S. industry and for the United States itself.” Energy-related chemicals and other energy-intensive industries such as petroleum refining, aluminum, glass, cement, and the food industry are some of the primary beneficiaries from secure supplies of low-cost energy from unconventional production, the study says. More than 70 percent of the cash cost of producing energy-related chemicals— which include major commodity petrochemicals such as olefins, methanol and ammonia—is the cost of raw materials and energy feedstocks.
The chemical manufacturing industry accounted for 13 percent of all U.S. merchandise exports ($198 billion) in 2012—compared to $152 billion in 2007.This trend is expected to continue as energy-intensive industries benefit from lower energy prices, lower electricity prices and increased demand for their products as growth in investment spurs domestic consumption, the study says. In addition to measuring jobs supported by the full unconventional value chain, the study also quantifies the additional manufacturing jobs attributed to the broader macroeconomic contributions that begin with unconventional oil and natural gas. More than 460,000 combined manufacturing jobs (3.7 percent of all manufacturing jobs) will be supported in 2020, rising to nearly 515,000 (4.2 percent of total manufacturing jobs) in 2025. The manufacturing sector will become increasingly connected to unconventional development as a primary source to create and sustain jobs over the course of the study period. Manufacturing jobs will represent one out of every eight jobs supported by unconventional oil and gas development during that time, the study says.

Up until now, the military has been the primary market for drone technology, using it to track down and kill suspected Al Qaeda members. Now there is greater focus on using the technology in a broader range of industries and for humanitarian purposes. New drone technology is being tested in the firefighting industry to help control wildfires in rural areas. Drones cost less to keep in the air to monitor conditions and relay geographical data on the path of the fire. They are also helpful as temporary communication satellites. Previously, firefighters would have to climb to the nearest ridge to get reception for phones or computers that have the programs to model the likely path a fire will take and to analyze data to determine the best firefighting strategy to combat the fire.
Drones are also being tested to deliver medicines and vaccines to remote areas, provide mobile communication networks for rural areas and during times of natural disasters, agricultural surveying and management, detection of environmental impacts and violations, management of protected animals and the detection of poachers among other things like surveys of communication and cell towers. Boeing, Lockheed Martin, General Atomics, Northrop Grumman,, General Dynamics, AeroVironment, Prox Dynamics AS, Israeli Aerospace and Denel Dynamics are all developing aerial drone technology while several other companies including SAIC and Textron are focusing their energies on unmanned underwater drones to help protect against ultra quiet submarines, piracy and even locating WWII pilots buried in their planes deep below the Pacific. Now Offering 5 Axis Waterjet Capabilities With Its Latest Flow Acquisition
Business is thriving at Colorado Waterjet! The company expanded recently with the purchase of its 3rd Flow waterjet, a 5 axis Mach 4c. Founder/Owner Dan Nibbelink believes there is no other job shop in the Colorado Front Range that has this capability. Dan, a registered Professional Engineer (P.E.), spent 20 years as a manufacturing engineer at a few companies. When his last employer, Hewlett Packard, continued to downsize, Dan knew it was time to do something different. That was in 1997. Dan is an avid researcher and a technologist, and he looked into the emerging waterjet technology. Though the first commercial waterjet cutting machines were developed in the 1970’s, they were still relatively uncommon in use. Flow first invented abrasive waterjet technology in the early 1980s, and in 1983 Flow sold the world’s first commercial abrasive waterjet cutting system for automotive glass. Early adopters of waterjet technology -- primarily in the aviation and space industries --found it was a perfect tool for cutting high-strength materials such as Inconel, stainless steel and titanium, as well as light-weight composites such as carbon fiber. Dan says, “I was previously a partner in manufacturing custom and semi-custom bicycle frames, and I thought about the incredible things A2Z METALWORKER

I could have done in this business if I had a waterjet.” He continued, “I did a search on businesses (job shops) in Colorado with waterjet capabilities, and there weren’t any.” Dan convinced his wife to escrow the house, and Colorado Waterjet was formed as a Veteran-Owned company. mine the brand of waterjet that would best suit his new company. He interviewed at least 4 manufacturers and determined that the Flow waterjet was the best solution. “I really liked their gantry style waterjet, and felt it was the most accurate waterjet on the market.” The company’s first purchase was the Flow A-4800 series with a 48”x96” table. He continued, “16 years later, our first Flow is still our work horse.” Flow’s beginnings are interesting - A small group of former Boeing research scientists started Flow Research (now Flow International Corporation) nearly 40 years ago, and they have been at the forefront of ultrahigh-pressure (UHP) technology ever since.Today, Flow commands 60 percent of the worldwide market share in waterjets. Dan says, “As the company has grown, they continually strive to improve their service to their customers. Today, they stock nearly every part, and most parts can be shipped to us overnight. Also, the technical support staff is outstanding. We call them on average 6-8 times each month, often with technical questions, and we get responses to our inquires immediately.” Dan’s intuition about the market potential for abrasive waterjet cutting paid off. Today, the company is Colorado’s oldest, largest, and most experienced job shop specializing in abrasive waterjet shape cutting. It has built its reputation on engineering expertise, quick turnaround, small (prototype) and urgent jobs. Its customers span the United States, and they even have a customer in the Cayman Islands, and their customers range from machine shops,to manufacturers, to artists, to aerospace, to ornamental gates, and signage. Colorado Waterjet has made components for finished products that can be seen in churches, universities, wealthy people’s houses, parks, and even at the Mexican restaurant Chipotle! Josh Van Maren, 10-year employee with the company, says, “We are experienced and willing to cut some very exotic metals that other shops wouldn’t even try. We’ve cut a near perfect nickel part (99.9995%), where the material was $600 for a small sheet. You just can’t make a mistake.” He continued, “Another challenging metal we cut was Ruthenium (#44 on the periodic table of elements). A small piece provided to cut the part cost $800. With these exotic metals, you have to know how to cut the part perfectly the first time.”
design allows the Mach 4c to accommodate up to four cutting heads. Dan says, “Waterjet cutting technology is one of the fastest growing major machine tool processes in the world due to its versatility and ease of operation. With the latest addition of our Mach 4c-XD, Colorado Waterjet can now offer our customer 5 axis waterjet cutting.” What they are doing at Colorado Waterjet is working very well for their customers. Dan says 2012 was a record breaking year, and the company is on target to again beat their best ever year. The company has been recognized for its excellence. Just this year, they were awarded ‘Finalist in Colorado Companies to Watch’, where only 100 companies across all industries were selected. They additionally have made the ‘Mercury 100 List’ for the past 6 years, a list prepared by the Northern Colorado Business Report, recognizing the 100 fastest growing privately held companies in Northern Colorado. For more information on Colorado Waterjet, contact them at 970532-5404 or visit their website at coloradowaterjet.com You can learn more about Flow waterjets by calling 800-446-FLOW or visit flowwaterjet.com
5 years after opening, business had grown sufficiently to add a 2nd waterjet. This time, Dan didn’t get bids on competitive waterjets, as he was very pleased with the Flow waterjet designs, and the service and support he received from the Flow team in Kent, Washington. He says, “I kept up with the research on waterjets, and Flow was still an excellent choice. In addition, I wanted the consistency of one operating system for our business.” This time the company purchased the Flow IFB (Integrated Flying Bridge) with Dynamic Waterjet® technology with a 72”x144” table. Dan says Dynamic Waterjet automatically compensates for stream lag and taper, natural occurrences of the waterjet process. Its articulated wrist allows the cutting head to tilt in any direction, compensating for waterjet stream imperfections using complex mathematical models. Last year, Colorado Waterjet made a major acquisition in its next Flow purchase. The Mach 4c-XD waterjet includes Flow’s HyperPressure™ Technology, as well as their advanced Dynamic Waterjet® XD technology for faster, more accurate bevel and 3D cutting. Launched in December 2009, Ball Aerospace built the WISE BCP-300 spacecraft bus under contract to NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. During its original 10-month operation, the WISE cryogenic mission collected a vast storehouse of information with far greater sensitivity than previous missions. The WISE satellite amassed more than 2.7 million images taken at four infrared wavelengths of light, capturing everything from nearby asteroids to distant galaxies. After completing WISE’s primary science mission, WISE began a fourmonth NEOWISE mission with the primary purpose of hunting for more asteroids and comets. The mission’s discoveries of previously unknown objects include 21 comets, more than 34,000 asteroids in the main belt between Mars and Jupiter, and 135 near-Earth objects. The renewed NEOWISE mission will again focus on detecting nearEarth objects that may be of importance for identification and detection of asteroids for future NASA missions. “The multiple repurposing of WISE is proving to be much like Ball’s Deep Impact spacecraft,” said Jim Oschmann, vice president and general manager at Ball. “You expect a satellite to complete its initial mission, and then when it remains healthy it makes sense to further utilize the spacecraft for additional research and discovery.” WISE observations have led to numerous discoveries, including the
elusive, coolest class of stars, the first known “Trojan” asteroid to share the same orbital path around the sun as Earth, and locations of supermassive black holes throughout the universe called blazars.

Delcam Introduces Vortex, Its Latest High Speed Roughing Technology This allows you to achieve the optimum cutting conditions that would normally be possible only for the straight-line moves across the entire toolpath As a result, you can reduce machining times by up to 60%, with more consistent material removal rates and feed rate.
Efficiency Vortex toolpaths are calculated to follow the shape of the part by creating offsets from the part profile. This minimizes air moves for more efficient machining of both pockets and cores. Unlike other high speed roughing technologies focused only on 2D roughing of cavities, Vortex can be applied to a variety of machining applications, including 2-axis, 3-axis, positional 5-axis machining and even rest roughing operations. Because Vortex toolpaths have a controlled engagement angle, tools will never be overloaded and so will achieve the maximum tool life. Shock loading caused by changes in the contact angle is eliminated, preventing chipping of the flutes.
Longer Tool Life
Vortex: Reduce your machining times by up to 60% Are you looking for a roughing strategy that: Gets the most out of your machine? Reduces machining times by up to 60%? Maximizes your material removal rate? Machines your part as efficiently as possible? Increases your tool life? Is completely optimized for your machine tool? Vortex is Delcam’s latest patent pending high speed roughing technology. Conventional roughing strategies significantly reduce feed rates and spindle speeds when machining internal corners. Vortex controls the tool engagement angle to maintain the optimum cutting conditions throughout the toolpath, reducing cycle times and maximizing tool life.
The stability of the cutting conditions gives constant edge temperatures prolonging the life of the tool coating and protecting against heat damage to the surface of the part. The ability to use step downs of up to two, or even three, times the tool diameter spreads the tool wear evenly over the cutting surface of the tool, again contributing to longer tool life.
Ease of Use Vortex has been seamlessly integrated within Delcam’s existing CAM software meaning applying a Vortex strategy is as easy as applying any other roughing strategy. MachineDNA also reduces the effect of human error by calibrating your machine tools and feeding this information back into your CAM program.
Features Controlled Engagement Angle
Vortex also uses deeper cuts machining with the full flute length as the cutting surface, maximizing the tools usage. Designed for Solid Carbide Tooling it integrates seamlessly with PowerMILL, FeatureCAM, PartMaker and Delcam for SolidWorks.
Optimization Vortex addresses the fundamental problem of conventional roughing strategies that can only achieve the optimum cutting conditions during a straight-line cut. Unlike other high speed roughing techniques that aim to maintain a constant theoretical metal removal rate, the Vortex strategy produces toolpaths with a controlled engagement angle for the complete operation. 54••Sept/Oct 44 Sept/Oct2013 2013

Vortex is Delcam’s latest patent pending high speed roughing technology. Vortex controls the maximum engagement angle of the cutter in the material, such that the angle calculated for the programmed step over is never exceeded, even in internal corners. This allows for optimal cutting conditions to be maintained throughout the toolpath. By controlling the maximum engagement angle and the load on the tool, Vortex can take deeper cuts than traditionally used in roughing
operations. Depths of cut up to the full flute length enable maximum material removal rate from solid carbide tooling and reduce machining times by up to 60%. Vortex technology can be applied to 2 and 3-axis roughing, positional 5-axis roughing and for rest roughing.
unnecessary techniques for moating or bridging. These offsets are then grouped and ordered efficiently to reduce the number of trochoids required while still controlling the engagement angle. This is particularly beneficial for rest roughing with smaller tools when there is only a small amount of material to be removed.
In comparison, when conventional roughing the feed rate is often reduced in internal corners to compensate for the increased engagement angle which in turn increases the forces on the tool. Reducing the feed rate leads to longer machining times.
In addition,Vortex automatically removes any toolpath segments when a slot or channel is too narrow to be efficiently and safely machined using the trochoidal method.
Increased Tool Life
Seamless Integration
Vortex significantly increases tool life and reduces tooling costs. Customer tests have proven that in many cases a single Vortex roughing strategy can replace several conventional strategies, thus reducing the number of tools required for roughing.
Vortex and MachineDNA are integrated across Delcam’s entire CAM software product range. Applying a Vortex roughing strategy is as easy as using any other roughing strategy.Vortex toolpaths can be enhanced even further with the integration of MachineDNA, which optimizes the strategy for your specific machine tools
Cutting trials have demonstrated that Vortex greatly extends tool life. Consistent cutting forces on the tool help to reduce tool wear. In addition this tool wear is spread evenly across the full flute length. The controlled engagement angle also ensures the tool is never suddenly overloaded, eliminating any chance of premature tool failure or chipping of the cutting edge. In addition, stable cutting conditions give a more constant edge temperature, prolonging the life of the tool coating and protecting against heat damage to the surface of the part. The benefits to tool life from Vortex can even be heard on the machine. Vortex produces a constant pitch while machining, indicating that the tool is operating under consistent load and cutting conditions. In comparison, conventional roughing will often produce sounds of varying pitch indicating constantly changing load on the tool (e.g. tool chatter in corners). Not only will you be able to hear the difference, you’ll be able to see the difference. Vortex produces chips with a regular size and thickness, providing further evidence of the consistency of the cut.
Step Cutting
Delcam’s step-cutting functionality can be combined with Vortex to produce a single toolpath that quickly and efficiently roughs the part without leaving any large terraces that would typically require a separate operation. After machining an initial step down up to full flute length, the tool will step back up the part to remove the rest material before commencing with the next step down. During the step-up cutting material removal rates can be maintained by automatically increasing the feed rate as the depth of cut decreases. Automatic Flat Area Detection
Efficient Roughing On Any Part
Unlike alternative high speed roughing methods, Vortex is based on generating offsets from the part profile. This produces an efficient toolpath regardless of the part shape. This eliminates the need for any
Vortex can be combined with Delcam’s automatic flat area detection technology, ensuring that the roughing strategy never leaves any excess material on flat planes. Designed to collect leadership data, the index reports a qualitative assessment of both the prevailing business conditions and expectations for the future as reported by key executives from the $725 billion equipment finance sector. Overall, confidence in the equipment finance market is 61.3, steady with the August index of 61.0. When asked about the outlook for the future, MCI survey respondent Russell Nelson, President, CoBank Farm Credit Leasing, said, “Stable to slightly favorable economic news, combined with rising equipment costs and interest rates, are driving a continued increase in capital expenditures within a number of industries. Current tax advantages, flexible structures and terms, used equipment values, and attractive fixed rates are contributing to another strong year for equipment Saws financing in 2013, with potential increasing momentum into 2014.” Band Saw Blades

From Soup To Overtime As business picks up and hiring resumes, the At a General Electric flight simulator here, the visibility has been set
their own enterprises. Dave Newmark, CEO of Encino, California-based Bid4Spots, says he sees Ballmer as a leader whose strategy of building desktop computer software has simply run its course. “When I look at the companies that have succeeded more recently, it’s not about developing tools for use on a desktop computer,” Newmark says. As examples, he points to both Google and his own 15-person firm, which provides an online marketplace for radio stations selling advertising time. “[We’re] doing something that only the Internet can do, which is bring information down to the level of the individual user,” he says of today’s tech winners. The typical entrepreneur may not have Ballmer’s 11-figure net worth, but any entrepreneur can learn from his troubled tenure. Chief among those lessons is that you should never ignore a threat to your basic business model, says David King, a management professor at Iowa State University. King compares Microsoft’s mobile computing challenge to a retailer trying to cope with Walmart coming to town. “It’s a direct challenge to their business model”. Microsoft’s model was based on people updating software every few years when they bought a new PC. “Now the mobile model has disrupted people having to buy new software with a new PC,” King adds. Rather than react to the challenge with the force it deserved, Microsoft instead focused on maximizing profits from itsWindows operating system and Office application software. A key event occurred in 2010, King says, when Ballmer killed a project, code-named “Courier,” to develop what was rumored to be a tablet-type device.
“Any owner in today’s climate needs the strength and support of a strong business organization.” Ron Overton, Overton Industries

“Other corporations have done better when it comes to transitions, King says, pointing to General Electric. Before longtime CEO Jack Welch left GE in 2001, he groomed three internal candidates to take over. The two who didn’t ascend at GE left to become heads of other major U.S. corporations, whileWelch’s successor, Jeffrey Immelt, still holdsWelch’s old job.” When outsiders come in, it can lead to drastic talent loss, as well as confusion among remaining employees who, understandably, don’t know what to expect from the new face in the corner office. Owners of family businesses can learn from GE’s experience, King says, by making sure members of the next generation of leadership candidates have the skills and commitment to continue the enterprise. “If you want to keep it in the family, make sure you have someone with the education and experience working in the business,” he suggests.

i cr o QuIk Business owners who want to resolve this paradox need to occasionally step back from daily operations and examine pluses and minuses of current strategy, King says. One way is with the venerable SWOT analysis, in which a business’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats are systematically identified and evaluated, along with appropriate responses.

Meanwhile, today’s business owners are focused on building futures that, with luck, will parallel Microsoft’s first 30 or so years, when it seemed like an unstoppable behemoth. For Newmark, succeeding in the post-Ballmer era means developing platforms to leverage the Internet’s power to bring people and information together. “To me,” Newmark says, “that’s the key to success in the Internet Age.”
