Editor’s Corner Train people well enough so they can leave, Treat them well enough so they don’t want to. -Richard Branson When a country has the skill and self-confidence to take action against its biggest problems, it makes outsiders eager to be a part of it. -Bill Gates A business that makes nothing but money is a poor business. -Henry Ford The manufacturing job market is thick with jobs and thin with employees to fit the bill. The typical manufacturing company, job shop, or general business that makes something, works hard to train their family of employees and to keep them feeling as part of the family! It’s typical to hear employers are sweetening the pot with free eye care, free dental, vacation time, bonus incentives and yes health care to encourage new workers to join their club. But that’s what everyone is doing or is trying to do.A business in this era has to at least show up with these bare basics for an employee to feel this job is where they will spend most of their time. So now that you found them, how do you make them feel ‘this is home’ and where they want to stay and to grow? Treat them like family. Joke with them, eat with them, train them, help them, walk as an example for them, and allow them to be a part of the team. Allow your enthusiasm to infect them and let these new hires sparkle, and allow their hope to shine. A manufacturing business must make something, they must sell it, and yes they must make money. But if we just make money, even a lot of it, what have we really made. Our companies should help promote good ethics, good habits, higher level skills, comradery, fun, education, and a quality standard that promotes doing all of these things when no one is looking. There is a culture in every business and I don’t mean an ethnicity, I mean an understanding of who we are as a company, what we do as a company, and what we stand for as a company. We can wear it on our tee shirts, and we can live it and exhale it with pride, it’s our name. In the old days there were cattle outfits that had hundreds of cowboys ‘riding for the brand’ of that company. In those days they ate together, laughed together, worked side by side, slept in the same bunkhouse, and held high the brand they all rode for. It was their club, their fraternity, their company and they were proud to represent the name of their outfit. If a company can focus on their employees as the most important asset of their company, help them grow well, help them feel good about where they work and what they do, that company will not only make money, it will also make great citizens! In closing I want to thank you all for supporting our 3 regional manufacturing magazines and I would like to encourage you to be a part of our magazines by offering your feedback on how we can do a better job of serving you. Thank you, and God Bless Our Troops!

Industry groups: Lift 232 tariffs so we can help get USCMA through Congress Inside U.S.Trade A broad coalition of industry groups is appealing to the Trump administration to remove steel and aluminum tariffs on Canada and Mexico so they can turn their attention to getting the U.S.-MexicoCanada Agreement through Congress. In a brief letter to Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross and U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer, the groups – representing a wide variety of sectors – say they “wish to underscore the importance of lifting tariffs on steel and aluminum imports and the removal of all retaliatory tariffs on trade among the parties.” “For many far mer s, ranc her s and manufacturers, the damage from the reciprocal trade actions in the steel dispute far outweighs any benefit that may accrue to them from the USMCA,” the letter states. “The continued application of metal tariffs means ongoing economic hardship for U.S. companies that depend on imported steel and aluminum, but that are not exempted from these tariffs. Producers of agricultural and manufactured products that are highly dependent on the Canadian and Mexican markets are also suffering serious financial losses.” “We urge you to take all necessary steps to resolve this matter so that zero-tariff North American trade can resume, and we can turn our attention to working with you to gain prompt Congressional approval of the USMCA,” the letter concludes.

The jobs numbers for January were solid. But it was another report that showed a strong gain in manufacturing activity that briefly excited Wall Street last month.

Aviation Week Names Boeing CEO Muilenburg Its 2018 Person Of The Year

“ISM really turbocharged the market this morning. It wasn’t the jobs report,” said Joseph Brusuelas, chief economist with RSM US.

After a year of high-profile contract wins, acquisitions and supplier overhaul efforts that stretched into Wichita, Boeing CEO Dennis Muilenberg has been named person of the year for 2018 by AviationWeek.

It’s a big difference from a month ago. The combination of a weak ISM manufacturing reading and a sales warning from Apple (AAPL) led to a 660-point drop in the Dow on January 3. “The rebound in the ISM manufacturing index in January provides further reassurance that economic growth has remained solid at the beginning of 2019,” said research firm Capital Economics. “It is clear that activity is not falling off a cliff.” “There were concerns that too much manufacturing activity was pulled forward from the start of this year to the end of 2018 due to worries about tariffs. But the new orders numbers imply that we should still see solid manufacturing demand,” Brusuelas said. There are hopes the Trump administration and China will agree to a new deal before then. But the latest manufacturing data, coupled with the healthy jobs numbers, are a good sign for the US economy. “Near term worries about a recession are fading,” said Mark Heppenstall, chief investment officer at Penn Mutual Asset Management. In dubbing the Boeing (NYSE: BA) executive “The Transformer,” the aerospace publication notes contract wins such as those for the U.S. Air Force T-X trainer jet and the MQ-25 unmanned refueling tanker as marking a particularly big year for the company in the defense industry. But there was also the $4.2 billion joint venture on commercial aircraft reached with Embraer and the $4.25 billion acquisition of parts distributor KLX. All that, and plenty more, came as the company won a greater share of the commercial aerospace market, even as it wrestled with production challenges and continued high-profile delays of the KC-46 tanker that will eventually call McConnell Air Force Base in Wichita home. That includes a new long-term agreement reached late in 2018 with Spirit AeroSystems Inc. in Wichita. Spirit (NYSE: SPR), the city’s largest employer, has work on all Boeing commercial programs, as well as work on defense programs that use commercial models as their platforms. Houston Transit System Orders $69M In Light Rail Trains From Siemens’ The Siemens Mobility train factory in Sacramento has won an order for 14 light rail trains for the Houston area. This new order represents more longterm manufacturing in Sacramento, where Siemens employs 1,300 people. In December, Siemens received two orders for a total of $1.6 billion to build heavy rail vehicles for Amtrak and for the Canadian rail service. The Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County has previously ordered twice from Siemens, and this will bring to 51 the total number of trains ordered from Siemens, according to Siemens Mobility. Houston’s transit system was the first in the country to use low-floor light rail trains, where the inside of the coach is level with the platform, which allows access for wheelchairs. Many light rail systems, such as Sacramento’s, have steps into the trains or special ramps for wheelchairs. Since Houston pioneered the low-floor trains, Siemens has had orders for more than 600 of the A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST •

Houston launched its light rail system in 2004 with 12 miles of track. It now has three different lines and just under 23 miles of track, said Laura Whitley, spokeswoman for the Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County. The transit authority paid $69.2 million for the 14 trains, she said. A Federal Transit Authority grant provided funding for 54.7 percent of the purchase for 13 of the 14 vehicles, Whitley said. Houston bought the cars for future capacity needs on its Purple and Green Lines. During times of high capacity, the trains will allow METRORail to run two car trains on those lines. The Purple and Green lines are METRORail’s east/ west routes that connect major universities, historic Houston neighborhoods, the pro soccer team “The Dynamo” to downtown, the theater district and METRORail’s Red Line, she said. Siemens builds heavy rail cars, locomotives and light rail cars at a largely solar-powered factory just south of Sacramento, where Siemens has been building trains and light rail systems since 1985. The 600,000-square-foot train factory is on a 60-acre campus at 7338 French Road. The company also has a repair facility at McClellan Park. Last May, Siemens Mobility got permits from Sacramento County for a 77,258-square-foot expansion of its manufacturing buildings, and in June, Siemens took out a building permit for $9.1 million in construction at the factory. Siemens Mobility is a subsidiary of Berlin- and Munichbased conglomerate Siemens AG. By Mark Anderson – Staff Writer, Sacramento Business Journal

Boeing has asked potential future engine suppliers of its New Midmarket Airplane (NMA) to pay a royalty if they’re involved in the jet program, a top aerospace analyst said this week at the Pacific Northwest Aerospace Alliance conference. Kevin Michaels, the managing director at the consulting firm AeroDynamic Advisory, said no Boeing insiders told him of the plan, but he’s hearing about it from clients, including aerospace parts makers throughout the supply chain. “How (engine suppliers) feel about it is that they think it’s Armageddon,” Michaels said. Boeing spokesman Paul Bergman declined comment on Michael’s remarks or the possibility of a royalty. Three companies submitted proposals to Boeing for the NMA, which some analysts have referred to as the 797: CFM International, Rolls Royce and Pratt and Whitney. Until now, engine suppliers haven’t paid royalties to Boeing for having their engines included on any new jet. “If there’s royalties, the important question is who pays for it, the OEM (original equipment maker) or airline customer,” Michaels said. “If the supplier is able to pass it onto the customer, it protects their interests, but it makes the airplane more expensive to operate.” Boeing’s potential NMA, aka the 797, is expected to be somewhere between the smaller 737 jet family and the Dreamliner 787.

They subsequently recover their investment by generating revenues on subsequent spare parts sold to airlines over the 20-year life of an airplane and its engines, either for repairs or during major regularly scheduled engine overhauls. But Boeing has also launched and expanded its own global services unit, a way to diversify its revenues during aerospace down cycles. It has started to seek a bigger piece of the aircraft parts and services market and is growing by acquiring companies in that space. Michaels said there are different possible approaches, which could include a royalty on aftermarket and engine overhaul parts. “That’s where the money is made,” he said. Another approach could be a royalty on engine hours of operation, which could be made possible by detailed digital information now recorded by systems on every airplane. Michaels believes there’s a 60 percent chance Boeing will launch the NMA. If it does, he believes the frontrunner for the engine contract is CFM International, the joint venture made of up GE Aviation and Safran of France. Here’s How A Tesla Deal For GM’s Abandoned Factories Could Help Revive America’s Auto Industry And Create 45,000 Jobs

production near Detroit and farther south in the Tennessee region, but as it looks for more skilled workers — and supportive politicians — locations outside of California may be on its short list.

As old-guard automakers struggle to adapt to changing markets, factories are shuttering and jobs are being cut.

“Hey Elon Musk, Call me,” Ohio Governor John Kasich tweeted this week. “There are no better works than Ohio workers. And Lordstown is ready for you.”

General Motors, the most recent example, announced earlier this month it would “de-allocate” three North American plants in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada; Detroit; and Warren, Ohio in 2019.The shifts away from producing passenger cars thanks to plummeting consumer demand for the vehicles will help GM remain profitable, CEO Mary Barra said — but will cost 14,000 employees their jobs. That’s where Tesla comes in.

Morgan Stanley says Kasich’s pitch could be a win-win-win-win for everyone involved. “Tesla, GM, President Trump, EV’s, and a small town in northeast Ohio are all potentially connected in an evolving narrative around the future of high tech manufacturing in the US,” it said in a note to clients this week. “We see many potential outcomes, including one that benefits Tesla, GM, the consumer and the next-gen American auto worker.”

Already at 45,000 employees and expecting to remain profitable after its first cash flow positive quarter earlier this year, the company is gearing up to expand its production capacity — most notably in China, where its begun construction on a second Gigafactory.

It was Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s comments to CBS’ 60 Minutes that catalyzed the bank’s theorizing. He told the news magazine that Tesla “would be interested” in buying an idled GM plant.

There’s also room for expansion in the United States as well. Adam Jonas, an analyst for Morgan Stanley predicts that Tesla could reach 92,000 workers by 2030, with “tens of thousands of jobs” needed in the US more immediately.

And it wouldn’t be the company’s first time sapping up unused assets from a bigger player in the space for a hefty discount. It’s main Fremont, California assembly plant is a former New United Motor Manufacturing, Inc. factory (even if Tesla has struggled to produce cars as the same quip as the now-shuttered previous owner).

So far, Tesla has avoided the traditional hearth of American auto

GM’s cars may not be selling well, but Tesla continues to sell more.

Morgan Stanley projects sale of the Model 3 to grow by 114% in 2019. A deal could be favorable for both Tesla and GM investors, too. “Given the parties involved in this story,” writes Morgan Stanley, “We think there is a distinct possibility that the event path could evolve into something with greater significance for the stocks involved.”Source: Business Insider; By: Graham Rapier

Sunpower Begins Panel Production At Former Solarworld Plant In Hillsboro SunPower has begun production at the former SolarWorld solar panel factory in Hillsboro, the San Jose, Calif.-based company said last month. SunPower said about 200 employees were employed making its Performance Series panels aimed at commercial customers. As the Business Journal revealed, SunPower paid $26 million for the plant last year, in the wake of the collapse of SolarWorld’s German corporate parent and the Trump administration’s imposition of tariffs on most global solar imports into the U.S. Tom Werner, SunPower’s CEO and chairman, said last fall

the company would spend “probably in the lowdigit tens of millions … over the next 18 months” in outfitting the plant for S u n Power production. Employment at the Hillsboro factory had edged above 1,000 in 2010 before a first wave of cheap Chinese solar panels began depressing prices. SolarWorld fought for trade protection and rebounded in the middle of the decade, but the Hillsboro factory’s future was thrown into grave doubt in spring 2017 after SolarWorld AG declared bankruptcy. The Hillsboro operation quickly downsized from 800 employees to around 300, then sought rescue in another trade case — and the Trump administration came through in January 2018. Less than three months later, SunPower, with most of its manufacturing in Asia and seeking a U.S. manufacturing outpost, announced the deal to purchase SolarWorld’s Hillsboro assets. over the year, with about three-fourths of the gain in durable goods. Manufacturing had added 207,000 jobs in 2017. Before last month’s report, investors had begun betting that policy makers will instead end up cutting borrowing costs. The data probably brought a “huge sigh of relief on Constitution Avenue,” the site of the Fed’s headquarters in Washington, said Torsten Slok, chief international economist. The figures take pressure off Powell to downplay the dot-plot rate forecasts of policy makers, and the chairman can “easily justify” additional hikes, Slok said. Now, “this should give the Fed some comfort that their assessment of the economy is correct and that they’re on track for further rate increases this year,” said Michael Gapen, chief U.S. economist at Barclays Plc. The figures brought the 2018 payrolls gain to 2.64 million, up from 2.19 million in 2017. Economists have expected the pace of gains to ease this year, consistent with their forecasts that gross domestic product growth will moderate amid the trade war and a fading boost from the Trump administration’s tax cuts. Even so, President Donald Trump is likely to cheer the results as evidence that his policies are still boosting the economy, rather than dragging it down.

Announcements & Releases Continued As US Payrolls Rise 312,000, Manufacturing Adds Most Jobs in a Year U.S. employers added the most workers in 10 months as wage gains accelerated and labor-force participation jumped, reflecting a robust job market that nevertheless faces mounting risks in 2019. Nonfarm payrolls increased by 312,000 in December, easily topping all forecasts, after an upwardly revised 176,000 gain the prior month, a Labor Department report showed. Average hourly earnings rose 3.2% from a year earlier, more than projected and matching the fastest pace since 2009. Meanwhile, the jobless rate rose from a five-decade low to 3.9%, reflecting more people actively seeking work. The dollar surged, U.S. stock futures remained higher and Treasuries tumbled following the strong report. Hiring and wage increases will support consumer spending and offer some respite after a spate of weak economic data and cuts in corporate revenue forecasts fueled stock-market jitters. Still, it may be hard to replicate such labor-market gains in 2019 amid the U.S.-China tariff war, softening manufacturing, a housing slowdown and a projected cooling in global growth. From the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics: Manufacturing added 32,000 jobs in December. Most of the gain occurred in the durable goods component (+19,000). This is the strongest employment report of this economic cycle -- hands down. While we’ve seen greater job gains in some months, the plus-300,000 number along with another increase in average hourly earnings clearly signals that the economic expansion ended 2018 on strong footing. Perhaps most surprising was the two-tenths rise in the unemployment rate due to an increase in participation. It’s one month of data, but talk of the Fed cutting rates in the near future should be off the table for now. -- Tim Mahedy, Bloomberg Economics The labor strength spanned most industries, including the biggest gain in construction since February, and the most manufacturing jobs added in a year. Private service providers boosted payrolls by 227,000, the most in more than a yearl. Average hourly earnings for all private workers rose 0.4% from thePage prior Announcements Continued 22month following a 0.2% gain, the report showed.

The annual increase followed a 3.1% advance. Private payrolls rose by 301,000, well above the median estimate of 185,000. Government payrolls increased by 11,000. The employment-population ratio, another broad gauge of labor-market health, was unchanged at 60.6%. The average workweek increased to 34.5 hours from 34.4 hours in the prior month; a shorter workweek has the effect of boosting average hourly pay. The U-6, or underemployment rate, was unchanged at 7.6 percent. This measure includes part-time workers who want a full-time job and people who are less active in seeking work. In annual revisions to data based on the household survey, the unemployment rate for October was increased to 3.8% from 3.7%. By Shobhana Chandra, Bloomberg

Caleb Carr Is Creating A Safer Hoist System For Rescue Helicopters Caleb Carr is the president and CEO of Vita Inclinata Technologies, which is working to create a safer hoist system for rescue helicopters. With a background in search and rescue, he decided to launch the company and find a better way to do helicopter rescues after witnessing many unsuccessful missions, but in particular, one that resulted in a friend not being able to make it out of a dangerous situation due to high winds that kept a rescue helicopter from being able to lower a rescue basket. The resulting technology is the Load Stability System. Can you describe this innovation — the hoist system? Many people have seen videos of helicopter rescues, more specifically, the use of a hoist system to lift a person from the ground to the helicopter. During these missions, the basket, person or load often swings, hurting or killing people in the process. Together, theVita Inclinata team designed a system that connects directly to the

rescue cable, which eliminates the swinging. The Load Stability System eliminates the swing by leveraging drone technology and high-powered fans to provide counter thrust in the direction of the hoist swing. It can not only counteract the swing but react to external conditions such as wind, up to 112 mph. Are there other ways this innovation can be used? Beyond helicopter hoisting and sling load missions, the LSS is also very applicable to cranes, more specifically, high-rise cranes. The LSS can enable operations to continue without the need for a tag line — rope from the load to the ground for stabilization — and in more adverse weather conditions. In addition to construction operations,Vita has looked to stabilizing everything from refueling aircraft booms — Boeing KC-135 — to ski lifts to prevent the oscillations back and forth. What did winning first place at last year’s Seattle University Harriet Stephenson Business Plan Competition mean for the company? I attribute a lot of what Vita has accomplished to the competition. Thanks to the competition, we received our first investment, were able to build a small LSS and started to make Vita a reality. Following the BPC, we were able to get into the aerospace accelerator AeroInnovate and operate as a company in the UW Jones and Foster Accelerator. Neither would have been possible without the mentorship and guidance provided by the SU BPC throughout the entire competition. Vigor picks Vancouver, Wash., for $1B Army project Vigor will build a nextgeneration U.S. Army landing craft inVancouver, Wash., where it expects to “eventually employ a p p r ox i m a t e ly 4 0 0 workers,” the company said last month. The announcement comes 16 months after the Portland-based company landed the nearly $1 billion project contract, its biggest ever. Vigor said it’s taking over the former home of Christiansen Yachts to set up the all-aluminum fabrication facility and “will be investing millions in capital upgrades and equipment.” With the move, first reported by the Oregonian, the company said it will shift marine aluminum work and workers from sites in Seattle and Clackamas to Vancouver. The Oregonian had reported last fall thatVigor was debating whether to carry out the landing-craft project in Portland or Seattle, and that Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler had made overtures to Frank Foti, Vigor’s chief executive. “Vigor looked in both Oregon and Washington state at building and buying options for this facility,” the company said in its announcement. But in the end, Vigor passed over both of the big cities, saying “the opportunity to bring its entire aluminum fabrication team together in one location was a primary driver coupled with the livability of the community, its proximity to existingVigor facilities, and the excellent suitability of the Christensen facility forVigor’s production needs.” By Pete Danko – Staff Reporter, Portland Business Journal

Boom said the round includes $56 million in new investment as well as $44 million in previously announced investments that allow the company to finance development, construction and testing of its Mach-2.2 commercial airliner, which it called Overture. “This new funding allows us to advance work on Overture, the world’s first economically viable supersonic airliner,” Boom founder and Chief

Executive Blake Scholl said in a statement. “Ultimately, our goal is to make high-speed flight affordable to all.” Boom Supersonic said its planes would feature 55 seats with seat-mile costs similar to currently available subsonic business class. The planes could shuttle passengers between London and NewYork City in a little over three hours, flying at more than double the speed of sound. The latest funding will allow Boom to continue prototype construction and testing of its planes. The company said it already has 30 orders from Virgin Atlantic Airways and Japan Airlines. “Boom Supersonic is leading the way in aerospace technology, promising to fulfill the high existing demand for increasingly faster travel at prices that are accessible to the consumer,” said John Shen, founding partner of Sunstone Management. “We’re excited to be a part of this Series B funding, and know that it will continue to yield returns to partners and investors in our Venture Capital Fund.”By I-Chun Chen

Intel Announces New Class of RealSense Stand-Alone Inside-Out Tracking Camera Intel just introduced the Intel® RealSense™ Tracking Camera T265, a new class of stand-alone inside-out tracking device that will provide developers with a powerful building block for autonomous devices, delivering highperformance guidance and navigation. The T265 uses proprietary visual inertial odometry simultaneous localization and mapping (V-SLAM) technology with computing at the edge and is key for applications that require a highly accurate and low-latency tracking solution, including robotics, drones, augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality. The Intel RealSense Tracking Camera T265 is good for applications where tracking the location of a device is important, especially in locations without GPS service, such as warehouses or remote outdoor areas where the camera uses a combination of known and unknown data to accurately navigate to its destination. The T265 is also designed for flexible implementation and can be easily added to small-footprint mobile devices like lightweight robots and drones, as well as for connectivity with mobile phones or AR headsets. For example, integrating the T265 into a robot designed for agriculture allows the device to navigate fields in a precise lawn-mower-style pattern and intelligently adapt to avoid obstacles in its environment, including structures or people. Whether bringing medical supplies to remote, off-the-grid areas or to a lab inside a hospital ward, the T265 can be used in drone or robotic deliveries due to its wider field of view and optimization for tracking use cases. ‘ROBOTS FOR RENT’ Manufacturing is going ‘gang busters’, and this is indeed a good thing. Today, about 9 out of 10 manufacturers are optimistic about the future; manufacturing leaders feel upbeat about future growth in new orders, output and employment.

Introducing Ready-Robots - MAKING INDUSTRIAL ROBOTS EASY TO USE

But all is not promising in our manufacturing world – in fact manufacturing’s top problem is that there are more manufacturing jobs (more than 500,000) than there are enough skilled workers to fill them. For the fifth consecutive quarter, manufacturers cited the workforce crisis as their top concern in the latest NAM’s Manufacturers’ Outlook Survey. Given this workforce (skills availability) disconnect, automation in manufacturing is a necessity, not an option.Thomas industries conducted a survey of more than 1000 adults to gauge their perceptions of manufacturing. Respondents cited manufacturing as the industry that will be “most affected by automation over the next 10 years”. In another study, this one conducted by consulting group McKinsey, their findings indicate “there will likely be a performance gap between the companies that adopt automation versus the non-adopters’. One might even question whether non-adopters will be in business in the future. The study goes on to discuss the main reasons people cite for not adopting automation, including affordability and pricing. In reality, The McKinsey report states, industrial robots often aren’t as expensive as many expect; on many occasions, they can offer a payback in as little as 18 months. But here’s an idea - What if ‘affordability/pricing’ were almost completely taken out of the equation for manufacturers considering automation/robotics in their workplace? How, you might ask?

HERE IS THE ANSWER: ‘ROBOTS FOR RENT’. RENT an employee that takes no breaks, doesn’t come in late, or call in sick, and can work as long as you want, with no healthcare requirements. All hardware maintenance costs are covered through the rental of your next hire. Risk eliminated! This hired robot will plug gaps in your workforce for a low monthly fee instead of a large long-term investment. This rented robot provides around the clock production and will lower your hourly operating cost while maintaining a steady quality flow of perfect parts! A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST •

Created from cutting-edge robotics research at Johns Hopkins University, Ready-Robotics was founded in Baltimore, Maryland. Wes Doty, Director of Sales for the company, says, “At Ready-Robotics, we are a dedicated team of people passionate about helping everyone who makes real things, from small job shops to massive manufacturers, unleash the power of robotic automation, whether in a big factory or a small job shop.” He continued, “Since our inception, our goal has been to put an easy to operate robot to work in your shop for most of the mundane tending level of machined parts. We believe that machinists and operators are too valuable to waste on tending a machine that is programmed already to machine parts. Instead we advocate letting your people teach the robot how to load the parts, set up the datum, lock the material in the tooling and press the green button, all day long, and all night if need be.” Wes says that Ready-Robots introduced a ‘rent to own’ or just ‘rent’ program for its customers some time ago. “It helped introduce robots to manufacturing customers who couldn’t get past the perception that robots are a large capital investment and even for those customers who have purchased automation/robots in their manufacturing environments in the past only to find that the robot was too difficult to use, and it sat idle on the sidelines.”

Wes says that Ready Robotics Vice President Jake Huckaby, through industry associations, knew of Olympus Controls, and highly recommended them as Ready Robotics planned to expand its business with partners throughout the United States. He says that Olympus Controls became the company’s 6th distribution partner.

Introducing Olympus Controls. Olympus Controls is an engineering ser vices and p r o d u c t s c o m p a ny t h a t specializes in automation. The Oregon based company recently celebrated 20 years in business. Scott Hendrickson founded the company with the goal to solve robotic and automation problems for its clients. The company offers training, field support, and a combination of products to solve each automation need. Silas Robertson, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for the company, says, “Our partnership w i t h R e a dy - R o b o t i c s i s advantageous to our customers in so many different ways, but there are 2 that I believe are most significant: 1) The ‘Rent to Own’ or just plain rental program would help overcome our customers’ anxiety or ability to invest into innovative automation systems. 2) Ready Robotics’ interface is significantly more integrated than other robotics’ companies’ solutions. Named ‘The Forge Station’, it solves thousands of applications so peripherals attach effortlessly and communicate with machines to allow your automation workflow.” The Forge operating system controls robots, peripherals, and end-of-arm-tooling with the same interface; Forge/OS utilizes a touch screen to control the robot, and connected peripherals like gripper, sensors, and pneumatic devices. Code writing is not necessary and sophisticated programs can be easily created by chaining together flowcharts. This branching logic allows seamless programing for the robot and its many variations within the environment you choose for it to keep producing work for your company. Wes says, “One of our customers deployed our FORGE solution. He was an Electrical Controls

Manager responsible for many plants; traveling regularly across the plants, and stretched thin. Once the company deployed FORGE, he was able to train the maintenance personnel at each of the plants to program the robots using FORGE. Not only did the Electrical Controls Manager’s work life become much more manageable and productive, but the maintenance personnel were eager to take on higher level job functions as part of their job. The HR manager told me that FORGE and Ready Robotics made such an impact on their business.” In the Thomas research, respondents indicated that, while automation was inevitable, it would not necessarily be a positive thing; 35% of respondents cited “robotics and automation” as “the biggest problem facing the manufacturing sector at large.” Wes says, “Clearly, there is the perception that automation is taking away manufacturing jobs, when in fact, it’s creating new jobs that simply require different skillsets.” He continued, “Our solutions are deployed in small and medium manufacturing entities all the way up to Fortune 500 companies. We are extremely beneficial in job shops, where today, owners have to turn work away (or lose it with such long lead times), simply because they cannot hire enough skilled machinists.” Forge allows small, medium and large manufacturers to grow their businesses simply because they can now operate lights out, 24 x7.” Wes says that more than 60% of their Robot rental customers convert to either purchase or long term agreements. What better measurement of success?

Carbon-fiber reinforced material is extremely strong and lightweight, making it attractive for a variety of uses, especially for building the 787 Dreamliner and Boeing’s new 777X airplane. To prove that the recycling effort could work, Boeing and ELG Carbon conducted a pilot project at Boeing’s new Composite Wing Center in Everett. That’s where Boeing makes the massive carbon fiber wings for the 777X. During an 18-month period, 1.5 million pounds of carbon fiber were collected, cleaned and resold to electronics and ground transportation companies. Based on those pilot results, Boeing thinks a majority of excess composite materials from its 11 sites can be recycled, helping reduce solid waste going to landfills 20 percent by 2025. “Recycling composites will eventually be as commonplace as recycling aluminum and titanium,” said Kevin Bartelson, a Boeing 777 wing operations leader. Boeing said it’s has been working for years to create an economically viable carbon fiber reuse industry, developing a model for collecting scrap material. However, it said technical barriers hindered efforts to repurposing material that was been “cured” or prepped for use in the airplane manufacturing process.

:2015 Boeing Deal Will Recycle Dreamliner And 777X Scraps Into Laptop Cases And Car Parts Boeing has signed a deal with British-based ELG Carbon Fibre to recycle excess aerospace composite material from its 11 U.S. airplane manufacturing sites.

UK-based ELG developed its own method to recycle cured composites so they don’t have to be throw out. They place the material through a furnace that vaporizes the resin that holds the carbon fiber layers together, leaving behind clean carbon fiber material.

Other companies will use the carbon fiber material to make new products like laptop cases, car parts and other electronics accessories, the companies said.

ELG managing director Frazer Barnes said its deal with Boeing will help the Coseley, United Kingdom-based company triple its workforce from 39 in 2016 to as many as 112 by the end of 2019.

Boeing said its agreement with ELG is a first for the aerospace industry and will reduce its carbon fiber solid waste by more than one million pounds a year.

The companies said they’re considering expanding the deal to include material

Automotive Manufacturing Leads the Way as Digital Factory Market Grows to US$673 Billion in 2030 The Digital Factory market will grow at a compound annual growth rate of 33% to reach US$673 billion in 2026. According to a new report published by ABI Research, a market-foresight advisory firm providing strategic guidance on the most compelling transformative technologies, these sales include the actual hardware revenues for entire industrial robots, collaborative robots, connected PLCs, intelligent industrial battery management systems, electric motors, pumps, tank management systems and smart glasses as well as data and analytics service revenues, device and app platform revenues, connection revenues, network service revenues, professional service revenues and security service revenues for all the above applications plus asset tracking and other equipment monitoring. Of these applications, only asset tracking includes connections both on and off the factory floor. “Currently, most manufacturing equipment still communicates in proprietary protocols and connecting it in a cost-efficient way without too much custom code often requires the expertise of IIoT integration specialists such as Telit or PTC Kepware,” said Pierce Owen, Principal Analyst at ABI Research. “For new factories, we have started to see how telcos and network infrastructure A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST •

vendors can deploy private LTE, but so far, it only works if the plant owner has the negotiating power to demand cellular connected equipment from all its suppliers. These early deals could build trust and open new opportunities for cellular in factories.” The automotive industry leads the way in the adoption of most digital factory technology technologies and represents the largest opportunity globally with US$139 billion in digital factory revenues forecast for 2030, but this does vary somewhat country to country. For instance, by the end of 2022, digital factory revenues in electronics manufacturing will overtake those in the automotive industry in South Korea, the fifth largest Smart Manufacturing market. “ T h e a u t o m o t i ve i n d u s t r y h a s demonstrated a willingness to scale transformative technologies ranging from generative design and additive manufacturing to IIoT connectivity and robotics of all kinds more than any other industry, but other industries will start to catch up over the next decade. The companies that follow automotive OEMs’ lead first and scale technologies with proven value will gain a competitive advantage. Likewise, vendors that not only compete at the highest level in automotive but also continuously pursue new types of customers in other industries will build sustainable relationships and advantages across the sector,” Owen concluded . These findings are from ABI Research’s Digital Factory market data report. This report is part of the company’s Industrial Solution, which will help manufacturers digitize operations to create better quality products at lower costs. Market Data spreadsheets are composed of deep data, market share analysis, and highly segmented, service-specific forecasts to provide detailed insight where opportunities lie.

San Francisco Invests In Training Workers For New Generation Of Manufacturing Advanced manufacturing is exploding across the Bay Area, with about 650 companies using 3-D printers and computercontrolled mac hines to produce everything from robots to eyeglasses to drones to backpacks. But for most residents the fast-growing sector — and the skills needed to join its workforce — remain a mystery. Now San Francisco Mayor London Breed is trying to change that. The city Office of Economic and Workforce Development has allocated $300,000 to SFMade, a trade group representing San Francisco makers. The money will be used to train disadvantaged residents for jobs in advanced manufacturing, a fast-growing sector that pays above minimum wage but has struggled to attract enough qualified workers. The nonprofit Humanmade is preparing to open a training, manufacturing and prototyping studio and education center.

PVD COATING CENTER

While $300,000 doesn’t sound like a lot of money in a city with an $11 billion budget, it’s enough in the first year to allow 45 San Francisco residents to be trained for a new generation of jobs that include 3-D printer operators and rapid prototyping engineers or responsibility for operating and maintaining computer numerical control machines — known as CNC mills — that cut, carve and mill wood, plastic, foam and aluminum. If the program is successful, it probably will receive more money next year, which would fund more trainees. Harmon attaches a temple to a pair of eyeglasses. “If you just pay attention to detail, it’s nothing you can’t learn,” he says.

The program will consist of three 24-week cohorts consisting of four weeks of employment preparation, eight weeks of skills-based training and 12 weeks of paid, on-the-job training hosted by local manufacturers. Finally, training center staff will work with local manufacturers to place the graduates in jobs.“This has been a kernel of an idea for a while, and I’m thrilled the city is ready to come forward with it,” said SFMade CEO Kate Sofis, who added that the program is something former Mayor Ed Lee had talked about frequently before he died in late 2017. She said the project would provide “pathways to equity through manufacturing.”If the pilot is successful, it will become the city’s fifth workforce training program. The city currently funds training programs in four sectors: construction, technology, health care and hospitality. These programs served nearly 1,300 disadvantaged job seekers in fiscal year 2017-18, including 494 in hospitality, 356 in health care, 253 in tech and 183 in construction. About two-thirds of the trainees found full employment after graduating from the programs, according to JoaquinTorres, who heads the Office of Economic and Workforce Development.

“These programs are directly in alignment with the opportunities Mayor Breed seeks to create for residents in growing industries, particularly in industries that can provide advancement and livable wages,” Torres said. The program would be a godsend for manufacturers like Topology, a company that designs and manufactures custom-fit eyewear, said CEO Rob Varady. While new technologies have allowed manufacturing to rebound in San Francisco — the sector has grown by at least 10 percent each year since 2010 — this new generation of makers won’t be able to stay here unless there are trained workers ready to fill the jobs.“We can’t find enough people with experience in these new methods, so the training that (the program) will provide is integral in equipping the area with the labor force ready to seize this new opportunity,” he said.

With over a million standard tools, we’ve got the “ings” covered.

The program will focus on workers from economically depressed backgrounds, particularly from the southeast neighborhoods of San Francisco.Varady said he has already had success hiring workers through a privately funded program called CEO Works, which helped incarcerated men and women to find jobs when they are released from prison. It was through CEOWorks thatVarady found line operator Jerry Harmon. Five months into the job, Harmon said he loves spending his days using laser cutters and computer-controlled milling machines to carve custom eyeglasses out of plastic and stainless steel. It’s not easy work, but it’s a good job that pays above minimum wage. And for Harmon — who is 39 and was looking for a career after having been in prison — it’s not just a second chance but an opportunity to build a meaningful life in an exciting sector. “It is high pressure — I’ll tell you that,” said Harmon, who lives in Oakland. “I enjoy it because it keeps me busy. It’s a good work environment. At first it’s intimidating looking at the machines, but if you just pay attention to detail, it’s nothing you can’t learn. Just don’t go off and start pushing some buttons that you don’t know nothing about.” Dan Kan, co-founder of Cruise Automation, an autonomous driving technology firm, said the company is looking forward to hiring graduates of the advanced manufacturing training program.

Entry-level advanced manufacturing jobs generally start at about $20 an hour, 25 percent higher than San Francisco’s $15 an hour minimum wage. Meanwhile, final touches are being put on the Humanmade workshop at 150 Hooper, where the first group of trainees will report to duty in the early spring. The space has a wood shop and a metal shop-machine shop with both CNC and manual mills, routers and lathes. It also has an electronics lab and textiles area, as well as digital production equipment such as 3-D printers and professional-grade laser cutters, according to Humanmade CEO Ryan Spurlock. “We have a shop that is fully built out — we are only waiting on the permit so we can open up for business,” he said.Harmon said that, given the training, advanced manufacturing could create opportunities for a lot more folks like him. “It’s not just a program, it’s a career, a lifelong skill, it’s everything,” he said. “I think it’s well on its way to replacing the old factory jobs that are gone.” Source: J.K. “We think the 737 and 787 will remain the sector leaders in single aisle and twin aisle aircraft respectively,” Corridore said. “While the recent Lion Air crash of a Boeing 737-Max plane brought negative attention to Boeing (189 people were killed), we do not expect any longer-term impact from the accident.” Corridore also expects Boeing to generate record profits in 2019, aided by strong commercial airplane deliveries and growth in its defense business. Boeing plans to boost 737 production to 52 jets a month in 2019, up from 47 currently. It also plans to increase Dreamliner output to 14 monthly in 2019, from the 12 it now makes in Everett and South Carolina. Boeing has studied the production readiness of its supply chain and insists its suppliers can keep up. “Boeing will be trying to offset its own material cost pressure due to tariffs and will likely push to lower costs in other areas,” Corridore said. “Given the size and scale Boeing operates at, suppliers will have to do all they can to give concessions to the aerospace behemoth.” As Boeing increased 737 production in 2018, though, it faced suppliers’ late deliveries of fuselages, jet engines and other components. Airbus had similar challenges. Source: Puget Sound Business Journal

Boeing And Airbus Will Continue Supply

Small Business Tax Deduction Has CPAs Scratching Their Heads

Boeing will generate record profits in 2019, but aerospace suppliers will feel increasing pressure to cut prices and boost output as the global sales competition between Boeing and Airbus revs up.

Millions of small business owners will be in uncharted waters this tax season as they try to determine if they qualify for a deduction that could exempt one-fifth of their income from taxes.

That’s the view shared by aerospace analysts at Deloitte and CFRA who offered predictions for the next 12 months.

Five months after the IRS issued guidelines to help business owners and tax advisers understand how the complex deduction works, accountants and tax attorneys still have questions. Even those who have attended seminars and workshops about the new law have come away scratching their heads, especially about a section that bars service providers like doctors, lawyers and consultants from claiming the deduction. Some of these company owners have businesses that don’t easily fit into the IRS guidelines or proposed regulations the agency has also issued.

“We expect Boeing to pressure suppliers to lower costs. This should put margin pressure on suppliers, some of whom are likely coping with higher materials costs already,” CFRA analyst Jim Corridore predicted in a report. Deloitte Aerospace Leader Robin Lineberger agreed suppliers will face more pressure to lower prices in 2019, saying jet makers are pressuring suppliers to help boost their own margins as they increase airplane production to meet demand. The continued pressure will mean more supply chain consolidation, Lineberger said. Suppliers will look to increase their size, lower their costs and acquire more “negotiating power”. Corridore predicts Boeing will win more than half of all new airplane orders during 2019, thanks to its popular 737 and 787 Dreamliner jets outselling Airbus offerings. “There’s a lot of conflicting advice out there,” says Jeffrey Berdahl, a CPA with RLB Certified Public Accountants in Allentown, Pennsylvania. “It’s going to be like the Wild West.” THE BASICS The deduction is aimed at giving tax breaks to sole proprietors, partners and owners of S corporations; these businesses are known as pass-throughs because company income “passes through” to owners’ 1040 forms, where it is reported to the IRS. Before the law was enacted,

many of these owners couldn’t get the more favorable tax treatment enjoyed by traditional corporations, those known as C corporations. The new law allows many owners to deduct 20 percent of what’s called qualified business income. They can get the full deduction as long as their taxable income doesn’t exceed $157,500 for an individual and $315,000 for a married couple filing jointly. But taxable income includes owners’ and spouses’ earnings from outside the business — for example, being employed in a different field or industry — and earnings from investments. If taxable income is above the $157,500 or $315,000 threshold, owners may get a partial deduction. There are two critical factors that can limit the size of the break. The first involves the company’s W-2 wages, or how much it pays employees, and the value of some of its property; complex calculations go into assessing the impact of wages and property on the deduction. The second factor affects owners who are in what’s called a specified service trade or business — for example, health providers, attorneys, accountants or consultants. They have no deduction if their taxable income is more than $207,500 for an individual or $415,000 for a married couple. The IRS spells out the conditions for taking the deduction on its website. Visit https://bit.ly/2RbxOtc . MORE THAN ONE ACTIVITY OR BUSINESS? Owners whose businesses involve a variety of activities may find that income from some qualify for the deduction while others don’t, says Angela Dotson, a CPA with Aprio in Atlanta. An optometrist who treats patients may not be able to claim the deduction for that work. But the same optometrist who also sells eyeglasses and contact lenses may be able to use the deduction for that income.

“If you are a real estate developer and somebody that owns real estate as investment property, you probably can aggregate,” Farra says. But someone who owns a cleaning service and an auto servicing shop wouldn’t be able to aggregate their income. QUESTIONS AWAITING ANSWERS

There might be some unpleasant surprises when owners in such situations get to their CPA’s offices. The new law requires separate records for the different types of work.

The guidelines the IRS issued in August aren’t set in stone although the agency said taxpayers could rely on them in compiling their 2018 returns. The agency has issued proposed regulations, and tax professionals have already asked the IRS to clarify a number of issues, including which service providers can claim the deduction. For example, the New York State Bar Association, which asked the IRS for multiple clarifications, said many taxpayers, including those who and rent a small number of real estate properties, may be uncertain about whether the deduction applies to them.

“They might find their books may not be in good shape for tax reform — they may not show the data CPAs will need to know,” Dotson says. In that case, either the owner has to go back and change the books, or pay extra to have their tax advisers do the work.

Many of Ed Reitmeyer’s clients don’t like to get extensions of the filing deadlines for the returns. But the uncertainty about the new law is a good reason to get an extra six months to complete and submit returns, he says.

Owners who have more than one business with employees may be able to aggregate, or combine the qualified business income of the companies, and lower the impact of W-2 wages on the deduction, says Miguel Farra, a CPA and tax attorney with MBAF in Miami. But the businesses must be in a related industry.

“It may be wise to do so with more clarity coming from Congress or Treasury,” says Reitmeyer, a CPA with Marcum in Philadelphia. However, he says, “with the government shutdown, and the political atmosphere surrounding tax policy, it may take well into the summer to gain any clarity at all.” By: Joyce Rosenberg, Associated Press

Boeing’s Big Investment In Aerion Supersonic Could Signal Boom For The Sector The three-way race to build the first supersonic passenger jet since the iconic Concorde stopped flying in 2003 was shaken up when Boeing revealed “a significant investment” in one startup.

Boeing’s surprise investment in Aerion of Reno, Nevada, had the effect of a sonic boom in aerospace circles. Until now, Boeing has expressed no public interest in supersonics. Megan Hilfer, a spokesman for Boeing HorizonX (Boeing’s venture capital arm), said the jet maker invested in Aerion after looking at all key players in the supersonic aircraft segment, which include Boom Technologies of Colorado and Spike Aerospace of Boston. “We liked Aerion’s strategy, their business case and their leadership team really sets them apart,” Hilfer said. “For Boeing, Aerion is a good fit culturally and strategically.”

Boeing will provide engineering, manufacturing and flight test resources to help bring Aerion’s AS2 supersonic business jet, now only a prototype, to market, the companies said. Seattle-based aerospace analyst Michel Merluzeau, with the AIR research firm, said Aerion needs a major aerospace manufacturer and its deep pockets to help bring its 12-seater AS2 supersonic business jet to market. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, but Boeing rival Lockheed Martin is no longer involved in Aerion’s programs. Aerion spokesman Jeff Miller declined to comment on Lockheed Martin’s exit. Aerion wants to make the AS2, a jet designed to fly at speeds up to Mach 1.4 or approximately 1,000 miles per hour. That’s 70 percent faster than today’s business jets, the startup says.

The AS2 aims to save approximately three hours on a transatlantic flight while also meeting environmental performance requirements, Aerion argues. The AS2 jet is slated for first flight in 2023. Merluzeau said Aerion’s deal with Boeing is its third with a major aerospace company, noting the two prior deals — one with Airbus, and now Lockheed Martin — have all dissolved. “So for Aerion, Boeing is really a last chance partner. If they can’t make it work with Boeing, then they’ll face significant challenges going forward,” Merluzeau said. By Andrew McIntosh – Staff Writer, Puget Sound Business Journal

The Manufacturer’s Secret Weapon Artisan Meets Artisan

By Stephen Hannemann

in the steel, steel that will hold an edge. Dendritic cobalt filled his need. The alloy is a complex cocktail of cobalt, chrome, nickel, tungsten, silicon, molybdenum, iron, and carbon. It will not stain or rust. Back to Manufacturing – Enter Jim Calcagno Foundry. Jim, who has been working with Jeff for nearly 20 years, has never shied away from a unique challenge. Over time, he has honed the process of investment casting this tricky alloy for Jeff’s blade blanks. Now Jeff can consistently produce a finished product with longevity. Dendritic cobalt also has the ability to hold an infinity ground edge for weeks on end with little to no maintenance required. The blank material is tough, so tough in fact, Jeff enlisted the expertise of 3M to develop abrasive wheels and belts to work the steel. Jeff’s blades are the epitome of a true working knife. They will last a lifetime. Once you hold a Jeff Cook custom blade, feel the balance, bone, filet, slice, dice or chop, you will understand the lure of a truly fine culinary instrument.

When we think of manufacturing, we often visualize large modern factories with CNC machines, stamping, brake and punch presses, or assembly lines with robots placing finished goods in cartons for shipping. Most of the time you’d be right. Recently, Jim Calcagno, owner of Calcagno Foundry, showed me a 10” chef’s knife, the finished product of custom knife maker Jeff Cook, for whom Jim casts the blanks. We were having a casual dinner at Café du Berry, a local Portland hot spot, along with the owner of Northwest Brass and Aluminum Foundry, and our wives. “I want one of these!” I blurted after admiring the work of art. Owner of the café Michael Anderson and I have been friends for many years. I took the liberty of marching the blade over to him so he could take it for a spin in the kitchen. The perfectly balanced knife proved as functional as it was beautiful! Mike wanted me to order him one on the spot. As a graduate of New York’s prestigious Culinary Institute of America, knife maker Jeff Cook enjoyed a 40 year run as a chef, focused primarily in resort hotel circles. He knew what he liked in a working knife. Jeff then studied the art of knife making under the tutelage of Larry Pogreba and Cuzan Odada, Japan’s national treasure sword maker. For Jeff, the secret of a good knife is
