Mind-Controlled Prosthetics Mind-controlled prosthetics, an AI model that explains itself, and superstrong diamonds that have been shocked, shocked in the lab. This is the beginning of some beautiful science. Brown professor Arto Nurmikko’s lab developed the Brown Wireless Device used in the BrainGate trial. Image credit: Brown University. What is it? Researchers in Rhode Island have demonstrated a highbandwidth wireless brain-computer interface. “With this system, we’re able to look at brain activity, at home, over long periods in a way that was
nearly impossible before,” said Leigh Hochberg, an engineering professor at Brown University. “This will help us to design decoding algorithms that provide for the seamless, intuitive, reliable restoration of communication and mobility for people with paralysis.” Why does it matter? For people with severe paralysis, who may be “locked in” or unable to speak, brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) can be life-changing. These assistive technologies enable users to type on computers, use tablet apps and control robotic prosthetic limbs with brain signals instead of body movements. While there has been progress toward wireless BCIs, their low bandwidths are slower and less accurate. Now, a consortium from Brown, Stanford and Case Western Reserve universities and partners have developed BrainGate, the first highbandwidth wireless BCI to match the fidelity of existing wired interfaces. (GE Research previously partnered with BrainGate on Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s research.) How does it work? Today’s BCIs typically rely on wired networks for speed and accuracy, which leaves users physically tethered to these electronic devices. But in the new design, “the unit sits on top of a user’s head and connects to an electrode array within the brain’s motor cortex using the same port used by wired systems,” Brown University said in a statement. Brown professor and study lead author John Simeral says “the only difference is that people no longer need to be physically tethered to our equipment, which opens up new possibilities in terms of how the system can be used.” A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST

In the best of times – in the worst of times – manufacturing can be challenging, and the year 2020 dealt some tough times across the board. No one will dispute that fact. The bright spot, or brightest spots amid all the uncertainty, turmoil, and chaos of 2020 are those individuals with indomitable spirits, who retain their positive perspectives, and refuse to yield to traumatic situations no matter how dire the outlook.
In talking with Henry’s fellow employees, I heard the same story – he just has that great attitude and is willing to help when a need presents itself. Henry has been with 3D for only one year – only one year to make a positive impression on his coworkers. Great Attitudes Inspire! Congratulations Henry!

Flatline Fabrication Inc., a young and growing company in Portland, OR, made two strategic moves this year. The first move: Flatline will be rolling out a new Quality Management System designed expressly for their unique business model and customer base. The system not only contains enhanced manufacturing quality procedures but integrates procedures for customers’ first contact. Much of Flatline’s contracted work is custom. Information and project requirements must be clearly defined up front to ensure quotes are accurate and customer expectations are addressed. When the project is won, the requirements and timelines will be articulately communicated to the manufacturing floor with station-to-station quality plans and check lists. The new quality system will be integrated over the next six months.

strategies to encourage innovation to address worker and industry needs.
You can find the comments filed with the Senate Committee here. One Voice believes the federal government should take a holistic approach to workforce training to meet the varying needs of employers, and manufacturers specifically. This involves engaging the youth at the earliest possible age, utilizing the coordinated resources of all stakeholders, and having a committed pathway for career opportunities with incentives for the individual, educators, and employers to promote manufacturing and innovation. A recent survey conducted in January 2021 with 85 respondents averaging 64 employees shows that 86% currently have an open skilled position with 94% reporting challenges recruiting qualified employees, including 48% facing severe challenges. The U.S. House passed a bipartisan National Apprenticeship Act earlier this year, an update to a law not changed since 1937. One Voice is lobbying lawmakers who in the Senate hope to begin moving workforce development legislation through committee in the coming months.

CMM Revo Half Page Final.indd 1 Arcimoto Sets Output Target For ‘21, Zeroes In On New Factory Startup
Arcimoto expects to produce 500 vehicles this year, more than four times what it did last year, the company said Wednesday as it reported 2020 results after the market closed. Further out, CEO Mark Frohnmayer pegged October 2022 for the start of production at a new factory in Eugene, counted on to boost capacity to 50,000 vehicles annually. That’s a couple of months beyond the August 2022 date implied when he announced the plan last summer. The company is betting the scale-up will help it drive down the cost of its three-wheeled electric vehicle toward a long-term goal of $11,900 from a current base price of $17,900, boosting demand. A series of stock sales in 2020 gave Arcimoto financial breathing room to pursue that vision: On Wednesday, it reported $39.5 million in cash on hand as of Dec. 31, compared to $5.8 million a year earlier. The pandemic hurt production capacity, first by shutting down the plant for several weeks and then by causing supply-chain disruptions. Supply chain lurks as a challenge this year, the company said, but it built four vehicles Wednesday, demonstrating what it can do when parts are on hand, and it aims to be to five by the end of the year. Frohnmayer doesn’t see operations “flipping positive” until 2023, he said. A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST •

goal of delivering a carbon neutral packaging solution that drops in seamlessly to the existing recycling infrastructure,” said Chuck Buff, founder and CEO of Packaging Matters, in a news release from Origin Materials. PET plastic, or polyethylene terephthalate, is the hard, clear plastic that is the most recycled. Origin has been announcing new partnerships in rapid succession ahead of its going public later this quarter in a $925 million merger with a blank-check company. Last month, Origin announced an agreement with Cape Town, South Africa-based AECI Much Asphalt, the largest commercial asphalt producer in southern Africa, to develop low-carbon asphalt built on the Origin Materials carbon-negative technology platform. And it also announced an agreement with AECI SANS Technical Fibers, which is based in Greensboro, North Carolina and sells fiber across the globe. Origin Materials is on the verge of becoming a publicly traded company through a $925 million merger with Artius Acquisition Inc., a NewYork-based publicly traded special purpose acquisition company. Origin Materials uses patented techniques that use wood extracts to replace petroleum to make a more environmentally beneficial material to replace plastic for containers for food and beverages. GE TURNS 129 TODAY GE turns 129 today, and the spirit of curiosity, innovation and problemsolving that animated its founders Thomas Edison and Elihu Thomson is still very much in the air. GE Healthcare is one example. Its history has mirrored the meteoric pace of advances within medical science — from the first X-ray machines built by Thomson, to CT and MRI scans, ultrasound and virtual care systems that use artificial intelligence. “You go back to Edison,” says Mike Barber, who has spent four decades at GE Healthcare and now serves as GE’s chief diversity officer. “There’s resilience. It’s just about trying to better understand: What do patients need, what do our customers need and what can we do from a technology perspective to create it and make it better.” Leveraging intelligence: Barber believes the next 10 years could produce bigger gains in healthcare than the past 30. Just last year, for example, GE Healthcare partnered with a U.K. consortium led by the University of Oxford to devise software tools that can analyze medical imaging, laboratory and clinical data to help predict which patients stand the greatest risk of developing severe respiratory distress, a key cause of mortality for people suffering from COVID-19. “There are just all kinds of benefits by combining the technology, leveraging AI and using the biological information around the patient,” Barber says. “How diseases are being treated and patients are being diagnosed is going to continue to evolve and improve.” A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST •

The Virus Hunters: A Tiny Sensor In GE Development Could Enable Smartphones To Detect COVID-19 Coronavirus One of the most daunting aspects of the COVID-19 pandemic involves tracking the spread of the microscopic, airborne coronavirus causing the disease. But what if you could spot its presence via your smartphone? It’s not as farfetched as it sounds. GE researchers are working on a sensor smaller than a fingertip that could find viruses and pathogens in the air. Led by Radislav Potyrailo, a principal scientist at GE Research in Niskayuna, NewYork, the team received a two-year research grant from the National Institutes of Health to build the tiny device. The group’s success could mean that, in the future, smartphones and smartwatches equipped with such sensors could help users detect not only the SARS-CoV-2 virus causing COVID-19, but potentially other pathogens and irritants. “One of the first lines of defense against any virus is avoiding exposure, which is easier said than done when you can’t see it,” Potyrailo says. “Through our project with the NIH, we are developing a sensor small enough to embed in a mobile device that could detect the presence of the COVID-19 virus.” A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST •
14 • APR-MAY 21
The project will draw on GE’s years of experience with developing industrial sensors that can detect minute amounts of gasses and chemicals in the environment in the presence of dust and other common chemical and biological contaminants. Like a digital bloodhound, the technology is programmed to isolate and identify a specific pathogen while excluding the interference of other particles. “The holy grail is to detect a single virus particle,” Potyrailo says. The finished project will produce a microchip smaller than a dime with nanowells, or tiny pores, that can only be activated by a particular molecule — in this case, a molecule from the coronavirus causing COVID-19. “In each of those nanowells there are bioreceptors that are designed to recognize only the virus particle they were designed for,” Potyrailo says. “If some flu particle or pollen or bacterium appears, it won’t be recognized. It’s like a lock and key.” The team’s goal is to build a chip able to determine the amount of the SARS-CoV-2 virus in the sample. This is important because this socalled “viral load” can affect the severity of the illness and its outcome. While the goal of this project is to make a small sensor, the technology could also be applied in larger machines to detect the presence of germs and viruses in expansive settings, such as factories, classrooms and food processing facilities.

of their experiments. Potyrailo, whose background is in optoelectronic engineering, also finds inspiration in nature. In an earlier project, he and his research team studied the ridges on the wings of iridescent Morpho butterflies to understand how they absorb and bend light. They used the observations to make a special film for Homeland Security that detected toxic chemicals.

Top image credit: Getty Images. Potyrailo came to the U.S. in 1993 from Ukraine to study analytical chemistry at Indiana University in Bloomington. He has visited scientific libraries from Moscow to Manhattan and corresponded with scientists all over the world, all in the name of curiosity. “It’s all about finding the knowledge that is out there and then building a bridge to the future,” he says. “A day in the library is worth a year in the lab.” He likes to pore over the footnotes of scientific journal articles looking for details about how others have tried and failed — or succeeded — and the nuances
His most recent achievement is an improvement on gas sensors, which alert people to the presence of dangerous chemicals for industrial safety. Small as a grain of rice and impervious to changes in temperature, these new gas sensors could be used someday in drones or in wearable applications to help keep people, labs, and factories safe. Last May, the discovery made the cover of the journal Nature Electronics. The inspiration for his coronavirus sensor came from the extent of the pandemic’s impact on the world. “Societal need for me was the biggest driver,” Potyrailo says. He notes that other global crises, such as World Wars I and II, have led to advancements in analytical instruments — such as mustard gas detectors — as scientists have sought to meet new needs brought on by the fighting. “It’s the beginning of the journey,” he says. “We are grateful that we have this opportunity.” Daniel Kruger, Dorothy Pomerantz A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST

The approach, while new to the defense market, has undergone 50 years of continual optimization. It’s perfected to the point that Spirit AeroSystems manages the entire production system of fully integrated 787 composite fuselages, demonstrating that its engineers have mastered the production of the critical flight structures – fabricating major composite components at production scale – in a highly competitive market. Even through all of this, Spirit still had the capacity to fabricate three million parts annually throughout the world and offer in-house parts production for any supplier, any time. Having the right manufacturing techniques, machines and tools capable of reaching a high rate on a composite structure, paired with the right approach to manufacture advanced materials and a relentless drive to optimize, means success in designing and modeling fully integrated thermal protection systems. And with the full range of capabilities enabling the industry from concept to delivery, Spirit AeroSystems is adept at taking prototypes and low-volume programs and creating solutions for high-rate production.
Managing risks to move from prototype to production at scale, quickly and affordably Wi t h i t s e x t e n s i ve program management exper tise, Spirit AeroSystems has the ability and processes to manage risks at every turn, and that begins in the concept and design stage. Spirit designs for manufacturability, using a big-picture overview of the entire process to ensure time and cost investments result in designs that can be manufactured affordably at scale. It’s this type of approach – identifying issues at the onset – that will transform hypersonic prototypes into full-scale weaponry. To illustrate: When considering material selection for thermal protection systems, engineers at Spirit AeroSystems not only consider performance expectations for the application, but they also evaluate buying, storing, producing, inspecting, assembling, joining and machining as part of the selection process. Designing for manufacturability also integrates the process so materials aren’t treated as a separate subsystem. Rather, they are combined with and designed for optimal performance in application while setting the stage for also being the most efficient to manufacture. The result is the ability to deliver a highly engineered and optimized solution while mitigating risks in hypersonic programs. Creating efficiencies with affordability, schedule, volume and speed-to-market throughout the entire supply process. Investing in research, development and technology to power tomorrow With the extreme complexities associated with producing hypersonic capable weapons, the future is in next generation high temperature materials and composites. Finding new ways to create and optimize fiber architectures, better characterization and prediction of material responses, more integration of applications, active thermal management and even more advanced manufacturing practices. With heavy investments in research, development and technology, Spirit AeroSystems has been at the forefront of every aerospace material advancement – from metallic structures to the latest generation of composites. The company’s focus on research and technology moves materials into the manufacturing process faster, enabling continual advancements in hypersonic weaponry. A culture of success: Winning the hypersonic weapons race Spirit AeroSystems has proven time and again that its commitment lies in getting the job done efficiently and affordably, and its people will go to great lengths to do so. They take pride in being able to deliver their products on time and with quality as expected. And in doing so, earn the trust and respect of their partners. Spirit AeroSystems is poised to continually deliver a competitive edge in the race to hypersonic weapons.

manufacturing and our industrial strength, and a big piece of that is centred around the idea that when we use taxpayer money to rebuild America we buy American,” said a Biden administration official. “We support American jobs, union jobs.” Mr Biden is expected to order an increase in domestic content requirements for federal contracts, a $600bn industry, as well as crack down on waivers that are routinely allowed for the use of foreign suppliers. Administration officials said Mr Biden would also reiterate his support for the Jones Act, which requires goods shipped within the US to be transported on American vessels. They say this could help “invest in building offshore renewable energy and put Americans to work doing it”. US allies in Europe have long pressed Washington to repeal the Jones Act to allow greater competition in the shipping sector. Mr Biden’s arrival in the White House has been broadly welcomed by America’s western allies and some of his early actions have been cheered. These include the decisions to rejoin the Paris climate accords, halt US withdrawal from the World Health Organization and scrap the entry ban on citizens of several Muslim-majority countries. One exception was his decision to revoke the permit for the Keystone XL pipeline connecting the US with Canada, which triggered unhappiness north of the US border, particularly in the energy-producing western provinces.
Biden Set For ‘Buy American’ Push To Boost Domestic Manufacturing US president Joe Biden is set to tighten “buy American” provisions as part of a push to boost domestic manufacturing, in a move that risks straining relations with key US allies. Mr Biden is expected to order an increase in domestic content requirements for federal procurement contracts, following a campaign pledge to boost the US manufacturing industry as he aimed to outflank Donald Trump in key swing states. However, America’s top trading partners and strategic allies, including Canada and a number of European countries, have long complained that buy American measures are a protectionist attempt to shut out their multinationals from the US economy. Biden administration officials laid out the changes to US federal procurement rules in a call with reporters, saying it marked an effort to rebuild “the backbone of America”. “[Mr Biden] believes that we can rebuild the vitality of American A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST •

Mr Biden’s early move on procurement is also likely to be criticised in the capitals of several US allies, including Canada, because it will cement concerns that the new administration is not interested in returning to an agenda of liberalisation in trade and investment, after four years of Mr Trump’s trade wars. He also said tighter procurement could help build the resilience of US supply chains, given the weaknesses that emerged during the pandemic, so “we are never put in a position where we are reliant on countries who don’t share our interests to deliver critical materials”. Electric Plane Notches Design Award For Sleek Aircraft Interior The futuristic Eviation Alice regional electric commuter airplane, which will be assembled and tested at the Arlington Airport, has won a big international award for its stylish and innovative cabin interior. The Alice interior cabin won a Crystal Cabin Award for its design from Aircraft Interiors International, the world’s biggest trade group for airplane interiors.
The awards are typically handed out at the sector’s glitzy conference in Hamburg, Germany, but were handed out in an online ceremony this year. “Winning the Crystal Cabin award is a testament to the creativity the Eviation team is bringing to market,” Eviation Executive Chairman Roei Ganzarski said. “An all-electric commuter aircraft by design is not just about the propulsion or batteries. It is about the whole experience.” To understand the magnitude of Eviation’s win, consider who it beat: the Boeing 777X Sky Architecture cabin, and Virgin Atlantic’s Upper Class loft in its A350-1000 widebody. The Airbus A350-1000 underwent cold weather tests and other trials to push the aircraft beyond normal operating conditions. “The electric propulsion helps ensure that passengers will enjoy low noise and vibration during flight, as well as the practical benefits of a range of 650 miles at a 240-knot cruise speed. But what other passenger experiences await within the allcomposite fuselage?” the judges wrote. The aircraft, which will carry nine passengers and two crew members, had its prototype cabin interior designed, developed and built with Lisbon-based design consultancy, Almadesign, that aimed to create a new passenger experience for the zero-emissions airplane. The seats sit straight during take off, but their design allows them to be rotated toward the window once airborne, giving passengers more privacy, headspace — and the view through the plane’s big oval windows. Seats include a large side console, storage space for small items and a charging station. The airplane and its design has not undergone safety certification by the Federal Aviation Administration. The U.S. Air Force Will Begin Testing Combat King II The demo was part of the service’s Agility Prime effort, through which the Air Force hopes to accelerate the development of eVTOL technologies and ensure the U.S. military retains access to them. “Instead of putting a very rigid set of requirements on a company, we’re almost doing the opposite. We’re saying:‘You know what, why don’t you show us what you can do?’We say that to perhaps a dozen companies. … We help usher them through and accelerate them,” he said. “And on the back end, hopefully what happens is we end up with 12 or more commercially viable, successful companies, many of whom will have military utility in lots of different areas.” The Air Force kicked off Agility Prime in February 2020 and since then has identified six companies as potential partners, according to Air Force Magazine: Phenix Solutions, Joby Aviation, Elroy Air, Moog, Beta Technologies and Lift Aircraft. In December, Joby’s S4 aircraft was the first eVTOL design to receive airworthiness approval from the service. A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST •

Machine-Ready Blanks Ready To Load Directly Into Your CNC Machining Center For nearly its entire 65-years in business, TCI Precision Metals has been laser focused on producing machine-ready blanks, including flat, square and parallel. Founded in 1956 by Burt Belzer, TCI is a third-generation family-owned business with current day-to-day management responsibilities falling under Ben Belzer, President and COO. Ben says, “We often ask our customers’ about production bottlenecks associated with material sourcing and preparation; the responses we get are pretty consistent. Prior to relying on machine-ready blanks most customers spent a lot of time and resources prepping materials for their next job, often relying on equipment and machinists better suited for the high value work of finish machining. Material prep bottlenecks can bring production to a grinding halt.” He adds, “It is truly an art getting parts flat, square, parallel and destressed to mitigate part movement during final machining. In addition to having the right equipment it takes highly skilled processes, especially when it comes to consistent production quality and quantities. This is the expertise we developed at TCI Precision Metals that we are able to bring to our customers.” He continued, “Because machine-ready blanks are close tolerance and consistent blank-to-blank, many customers report faster part changes and reduced clamping time. The consistency also supports automated production applications such as pallet pool systems, robotic part placement, and full lights out machining. Aside from increasing throughput, precision machine-ready blanks also make entry level machinists more productive by letting them start the job with flat, square and parallel materials that arrive ready to load, lock and go.” Custom machine-ready blanks are precision ground and/or milled to the customer’s net specifications and can be furnished as close as +/-.0005” dimensionally and as close as .002” in flatness, squareness and parallelism. Each machine-ready blank is deburred, cleaned and vacuum packaged (if possible) to eliminate the possibility of damage during handling and shipping. Our machine-Ready Blanks helps shops increase throughput up to 25% allowing them to ship finished parts faster and get paid quicker. Typically, machine-ready blanks are square, rectangular, or round, but TCI also offers feature-added blanks, which are milled to the same tight tolerances as custom blanks but include one or more features such as hogging large amounts of material as specified by the customer. Feature-added blanks require less in-house machine time to finish the part. TCI also produces dovetail machine-ready blanks. Each Blank includes a precision dovetail feature to match the brand and model of the dovetail work holding fixture used by the customer. Dovetail blanks are perfect for 4- and 5-axis work. Recently, TCI Precision Metals announced a program to provide A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST •

customers with first article sample parts on request with accompanying production volume quotation. The program allows customers to verify production processes, fixturing and create first article finished parts, realizing the benefits of machine-ready blanks, before ordering the materials. Some restrictions apply. TCI Precision Metals is a value-added metals distributor but is also happy to process customer supplied materials as well. TCI offers Blanchard grinding, double disc grinding, duplex milling, sawing, waterjet cutting, flattening, finishing and straightening. Their customers come to TCI when they struggle with keeping parts flat during their machining process. TCI’s specialized flattening and straightening equipment ensures your parts will arrive flat, without twist, without bows, so you have the confidence the parts will not move when you cut your first chip. Ben says, “Our industry skillset is akin to what a journeyman machinist spends years in training to learn, it is often manual, it is often custom, and our employees are truly artisans. Our employees are so skilled that we do everything we can, with competitive pay and benefits and a good working environment, to retain them. Our employees are in essence, our competitive advantage, and everything we do for our customers is value add.” Ben is a Millennial and as you can imagine, he embraces technology. “I view one of my
key roles in the company is to bring new technologies into a mature industry. It is the technologies that we invest in that will differentiate TCI from others, facilitating continuous efficiency improvements, including shortening the order to delivery timeframe, particularly for customers across the country.” TCI has continued to invest into new state of the art equipment to support their customers with a high yield precision plate saw, CNC high-volume duplex milling machines for flat plate, and a state-of-the-art water jet cutting machine to cut perfect blanks for the 18,000 machine shops in the USA. “We produce precision machine-ready materials much more efficiently than our customers can on their shop floor. The savings are passed on in the form of high quality and value pricing,” said Ben. Under Ben’s direction, the company has launched its Online Store https://shop.tciprecision. com late last year, which offers standard size blanks for quick delivery. The Online Store is an ideal materials source for low volume quick-turn production jobs, prototypes and more. Ben says, “Our online store stocks nearly 1,700 standard size, alloy and tolerance configurations. These machine-ready blanks are already produced and available for immediate shipment.” As a rule, products available through the TCI Online Store ship the next day. TCI Precision Metals is based in California, but the majority of their customers, an estimated 70% are based outside of their home state, and a significant number of their customers hail from the east coast. For customer c o nve n i e n c e a l l quotes include shipping. Ben says, “We are a very specialized niche business, when customers need close tolerance, flat, square, and parallel materials they are really faced with three choices, 1) either purchase from a company that specializes in machine ready blanks, or 2) buy oversize material and then finish it up to near net size in their own shop with sawing, milling, grinding and/or deburring, or 3) send it out to an outside grind shop. When choosing to prep material in-house or through a grind shop there are costs to consider. When sending materials out to a grind shop it is easy to monetize, but when they finish it up near net size in their own shop, the costs are not always apparent. They need to consider scrap, machine time, consumables, labor time, and nearly always the output will not be to the quality they will get from TCI. Our challenge is to help purchasing agents to evaluate the total cost of producing a part as they are selecting suppliers.” Ben says, “With a single PO shops can receive machine-ready materials that let them get right to the high value process of finish machining, by eliminating material prep and other time-consuming processes. Choosing machine-ready materials and services will reduce overall cycle time (chip-to-chip), accelerate throughput and provide a leaner, more efficient production environment.” Machine-ready blanks fromTCI Precision Metals can be delivered all at once or just-in-time based on production scheduling.
TCI is constantly seeking qualified candidates for openings at their company, and they offer competitive salaries and great benefits. MACHINING IT FLAT… “Years ago, our machine shop bid a job from a wafer manufacturing company for a plate that had to be perfectly flat when finished machining the details into it, about .001” over all flatness. When I saw the job, I knew what was available out there from the mills, and from experience recognized through standard machining practices the part would move, or potato chip as we call it in the industry. So, I quoted the job using double disc ground plate fromTCI, as I had prior success with them on jobs requiring tight tolerances for flatness. When we won the job, my boss said we didn’t need to buy the perfectly ground plate, that he felt with all of his many years of machining experience he could relieve the stress of the material by slightly skim cutting one side and then the other slowly to alleviate the stress and the reaction of the metal to go back to its original state.
his answer?
I bet him $20 that he would not be able to hold the flatness and we would lose the raw material we bought and lose money on the first order by scrapping the raw material. I begged him to let me bring in the Double disc ground plate as we had quoted the job. “I got this”, was
Three week later, with his tail between his legs he said, “I was wrong, that material potato chipped on me, just like you said. Can you get me that perfectly ground plate in here in 2 weeks?” I said probably not, you ate up my lead-time. I will ask the customer for more time and, by the way where is my twenty bucks. I won the bet, not that I really wanted to, I wanted to make the parts right the first time. It is better to start with the end in mind. If it has to be flat to a tight tolerance, start with flat perfectly ground material. You won’t be sorry, and you will make money.” Kim Carpenter Customer A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST •

proprietary chip construction techniques.
In addition, Intel will form a standalone semiconductor manufacturing business, Intel Foundry Services, in order to serve growing global demand for computer chips, with plans for more semiconductor factories elsewhere in the U.S. and Europe.
Intel Foundry Services will be led by Intel’s senior vice president, Dr. Randhir Thakur, who will report directly to Gelsinger.
The new standalone business will help Intel challenge rival chip manufacturers around the world like Samsung Semiconductors of South Korea and TSMC of Taiwan, which currently produce many of the computer chips used in electronic products from cell phones and laptops to electric vehicles and refrigerators. Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger made the announcements during a webcast on March 23 outlining what Gelsinger called “IDM 2.0,” a broad plan for Intel to significantly increase its integrated device manufacturing (IDM) operations. The new Arizona factories, Gelsinger says, will create about 3,000 permanent “high-tech, high-wage” jobs, as well as 15,000 new local long-term jobs in the state and 3,000 temporary construction jobs. In a statement, Arizona Governor Doug Ducey said Intel’s decision to build there “proves once again that Arizona is at the cutting-edge of advanced chipmaking and manufacturing.” According to Pat Gelsinger, the $20 billion plants will produce Intel’s “first large-scale foundry operation,” and he has plans to pick more sites for foundries in the U.S. and Europe. Semiconductor foundries, like those operated by TSMC and U.S.-based Globalfoundries, typically produce chips designed by outside customers, like Qualcomm Inc. or Apple Inc., which don’t have chip production facilities of their own. Intel already designs and produces its own chips, but its new foundry business will allow other companies to leverage Intel’s production lines and
The move to enter the semiconductor foundry field comes at an opportune time for Intel. General Motors Co., Ford Motor Co., and Honda North America, among other automakers, have run into vehicle production bottlenecks caused by a shortage of semiconductors. That shortage, in part, has been driven by an increased demand for computer electronics during the very pandemic that crushed vehicle production in the spring of 2020 that automakers are currently trying to recover from. After meeting with a bipartisan group of senators, President Biden signed an executive order directing members of the Cabinet to review supply chains for essential goods commonly produced internationally, including semiconductors. Q2 Update to 2021 Economic Outlook Forecasts 11.2% Expansion in Equipment and Software Investment Growth and 5.7% GDP Growth as Pandemic Wanes With U.S. vaccination rates rising quickly and the end of the pandemic in sight, equipment and software investment growth is expected to be robust this year as businesses invest to adapt to a post-pandemic normal. Annual equipment and software investment growth of 11.2 percent is forecast for 2021. Annual U.S. GDP growth for 2021 is forecast at 5.7 percent, according to the Q2 update to the 2021 Equipment Leasing & Finance U.S. Economic Outlook released today by the Equipment Leasing & Finance Foundation. Scott Thacker, Foundation Chair and Chief Executive Officer of Ivory Consulting Corporation, said, “Finally, we are beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel. The widespread availability of vaccinations offers hope that economic activity will soon return to pre-pandemic levels, or beyond. The robust stimulus efforts, along with trillions of dollars in pent-up demand, point to a wave of spending this summer and fall. All indicators point to 2021 being a banner year for equipment and software investment, and the equipment finance industry is poised to benefit from that expected economic activity.” Highlights from the Q2 update to the 2021 Outlook include: • The equipment and software investment growth forecast of 11.2 percent benefited from a 21 percent surge in Q4 2020, which provided a strong jumping-off point for 2021. • The U.S. economy expanded at 4.3 percent (revised) annualized rate in Q4 2020 as the nation struggled with surging COVID-19 cases and deaths. Although the labor market recovery is still far from complete and the K-shaped recovery has left millions of consumers in a precarious position, the overall balance of risks is on the upside. • The U.S. manufacturing sector continued to improve in early 2021 due to strong demand for both consumer and business goods. Underlying demand remains strong, although supply chain backlogs should be monitored and rising input prices could become an increasingly significant concern in the months ahead. • Main Street managed to weather the winter months and the third wave of the pandemic, although not without significant difficulty. Further federal relief and stimulus efforts have played an outsized role in the survival and longer-term viability of many businesses. Warmer weather, rising vaccination rates, and the relaxation of pandemic-era operating restrictions offer hope that there are better days ahead. • The Federal Reserve again confirmed its commitment to keeping interest rates at zero until at least 2023.The Fed also ended a pandemic-era capital requirement relief measure that could cause turmoil in bond markets.

While Ford and the world’s other big automakers are earning billions of dollars selling pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles p owe re d by gasoline, they have not yet gained much ground in electric vehicles, the fast-growing segment of the auto business dominated by Tesla. That could finally change this year. Ford, Volkswagen and other automakers will begin selling several models with greater driving range than an earlier round of Tesla challengers that failed to draw many buyers. Ford in particular needs its latest foray into EVs to be a smash hit. With the exception of its bestselling pickup trucks, the company was struggling even before the pandemic sent auto sales tumbling. Many critics and car buyers have long considered its model lineup tired and uninspiring. And investors value Ford around $38 billion, about half as much as General Motors and a far cry from Tesla’s $800 billion market capitalization. A new chief executive, Jim Farley, who took over in October, has pledged to streamline its operations — the company recently said it was shutting down three factories in Brazil — and invest in electric and autonomous cars. The Mach-E will be Farley’s first big test. The company is betting that the car will succeed where others have failed in part because, although it is called a Mustang, it is a roomy and high-riding SUV, which many American car buyers prefer over sedans. Most of Tesla’s sales come from its Model 3 compact sedan. Other automakers, including Volkswagen, Nissan, BMW, MercedesBenz,Volvo and Hyundai, are also planning to introduce electric SUVs in the coming months. Several of the new entries are also priced attractively compared with Tesla models and could lure buyers who are interested in electric vehicles but have balked at paying premiums prices. The Mustang Mach-E and the Volkswagen ID.4, which is due in dealerships in March, go about 250 miles on a full charge — about the same as the cheapest version of Tesla’s Model Y — and start at about $43,000 and $40,000. The base ModelY starts at about $42,000, but the Ford and Volkswagen models are eligible for a $7,500 federal tax credit that will lower the final cost to well under $40,000, or close to the average price of new cars sold in the United States. The tax credit no longer applies to purchases of Teslas. Startup automakers will also put new cars on the road this year. Rivian,
which is backed by Amazon and Ford, plans to start selling a luxury SUV and a luxury pickup truck this summer. They are priced about $75,000 but are intended for off-road use — an ability that Tesla has not focused on, although the company aims to begin producing a pickup truck later in the year. Electric vehicles make up only about 3% of global auto sales but are expected to rise rapidly over the next decade. Electrics could outsell gasoline-powered vehicles globally by 2040, some analysts think. As a result, many automakers are spending billions of dollars to introduce dozens of electric models over the next several years. Tesla now faces stiffer competition in China and Europe, but it still dominates the U.S. market. The company does not break out its sales by country, but analysts believe it sold 200,000 or more electric cars in the United States last year — more than all other manufacturers combined. The carmakers introducing electric models this year in the United States say they are not trying to lure buyers away from Tesla as much as they are trying to expand the pool of potential buyers for such cars. Tesla has largely appealed to high-income luxury car buyers, and early adopters — consumers who delight in owning the latest, most cutting-edge technology. Few electric cars are arriving with as much anticipation as the Mustang Mach-E. Ford had made electrics in the past that were built on the same underpinnings the company used for gasoline models. A few years ago, as Tesla sales were taking off and Ford’s profits began slumping, the company resolved to build an electric car from the ground up. In hopes of enticing buyers, Ford named its first after its storied sports car. Some auto reviewers and aficionados have criticized the company for its name choice because the Mach-E is so different from other Mustangs. “We wanted this vehicle to have character,” said Robert Iorio, chief engineer for the Mach-E. “The Mustang name is a link to a product that really resonates in the marketplace.” Ford, which is producing the car in Mexico, vowed to begin delivering the car by the end of 2020 and delivered three to customers in December. It has taken orders for all of the Mach-Es it plans to produce this year — about 50,000, Iorio said. Most will be sold in the United States and some in Europe. Sales in China will start later this year. If the company delivers as many cars as it says it will, the Mach-E could become one of the top-selling electric cars in the United States, after the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y, and could top the Chevrolet Bolt, about 20,000 of which were sold last year. “I think it’s going to lift us right up there,” Iorio said. “I think people will see Ford in a different light.” A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST •

SpaceX Launches Starlink Satellites In Quickest Succession Yet Space Exploration Te c h n o l o g i e s Corp. launched 60 more of its broadband internet satellites into orbit early last month in the company’s fourth Starlink mission
in three weeks.
SpaceX has now launched 240 Starlink satellites in 21 days with missions on March 4, March 11, March 14 and March 24. The Falcon 9 rocket lifted off last month from Space Launch Complex 40 (SLC-40) at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida , marking the company’s 23rd Starlink mission. The constellation now comprises around 1,320 satellites — minus the 60 or so that have been de-orbited since the program started in May 2019. The mission marked the sixth launch of this particular Falcon 9 first A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST •

About eight minutes after liftoff, SpaceX recovered the first stage once again on the “Of Course I Still Love You” droneship stationed in the Atlantic Ocean, marking the company’s 78th successful rocket recovery. Then, about an hour after liftoff, the satellites were deployed. Starlink is meant to be a key source of income for SpaceX by providing global broadband internet service. The company targeted service to the northern United States and Canada in 2020 and now aims to rapidly expand to near-global coverage of the populated world by 2021. For example, a public school district in rural Virginia announced in December that it would provide some families with Starlink to help with home-learning in an area where about 40% of teachers and students do not have internet access at home. SpaceX said Starlink units were deployed starting in January to more than 40 homes. Last month’s mission follows recent news that SpaceX has raised another $850 million in equity funding, bringing its valuation to around $74 billion. By Annlee Ellingson – Staff Reporter, L.A. Biz
Daimler Begins Taking Orders For All-Electric Freightliner Trucks With production set to begin late next year, Daimler Trucks Nor th America is taking orders for its first Freightliner battery electric trucks, the Por tland-based company said. Daimler is one of at least a couple dozen companies, from startups to traditional manufacturers, aiming to get electric trucks into the market. The heavy-duty eCascadia and medium-duty eM2 have been in pilot testing programs backed by California air quality agencies since 2019 and have rung up a total of nearly 750,000 miles, according to Daimler. “From reveal of proof of concept in 2018, to a demonstration fleet that’s in the hands of real customers, running real freight in the real world, to today’s moment where we are ready to formally welcome the nation’s fleets to all-electric freight movement, the entire team at Daimler Trucks North America is incredibly proud of our progress,” Richard Howard, a DTNA senior vice president,
said in a statement. The class 8 eCascadia rig has a range of 250 miles, and the medium-duty eM2 box truck can go 230 miles on a charge, Daimler said. Cleaning up freight movement is a big climate challenge:Transportation accounted for 28% of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions in 2018, according to the EPA, and medium- and heavy-duty trucks were 23% of that portion. While electric trucks are increasingly seen as inevitable, questions remain about costs, although battery prices are falling fast. Weight constraints, the pace of adoption, development of charging infrastructure and even which technology will win out are also questions. Daimler,Tesla,VW and Volvo are among companies betting on batteries, but a handful of others — includingToyota, Hyundai and Nikola — think fuel cells powered by hydrogen could win out. Kratos Lands Another Military Contract For Its Jet-Powered Drones A subsidiary of aerospace defense contractor Kratos Defense & Security Solutions Inc. has won an additional $3.6 million logistics support and engineering services contract to service jet-powered drone aircraft it builds in Sacramento.
Earlier this month, Kratos won a $38.7 million order to build aerial target drones for the U.S. Navy. The company manufactures and designs the target drones in Sacramento County and several locations at McClellan Park. Kratos, which also has a design center in Roseville, employs more than 450 people locally, making it the sixth-largest manufacturer in the region. With this latest contract, Kratos’ Sacramento operations have won more than $90 million in orders this year. Last year, Kratos took more than $100 million in a series of drone orders, and it won more than $117 million in a series of orders for tactical drones in 2018. Kratos is based in San Diego. It has manufacturing operations in Oklahoma, as well as Sacramento. The jet-powered target drones the Navy buys from Kratos are 17 feet long with a 7-foot wingspan. They can fly at just under the speed of sound at altitudes from 7 feet over sea level to 40,000 feet. The Navy uses them to train and test sailors to shoot down enemy aircraft, missiles and cruise missiles. Kratos has received orders this year for at least 83 of the drones to be delivered to the Navy by the end of 2023. Kratos also makes target and tactical drones for the Air Force and other governments. By Mark Anderson – Staff Writer, Sacramento Business Journal A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST •

The Manufacturer’s Secret Weapon Speed Drives Innovation
By Stephen Hannemann
Why is it some are born with the need for speed? It is in the blood. Out of a family of four boys and one girl, Troy Hannemann got the gene, apparently from his father who Drag Master Piece raced motorcycles in the mid 60’s, later segueing to water ski racing. Pops Hannemann retired after 23 years of national speed water ski competition in 1993. In the meantime, son Troy Hannemann rebuilt his first drag boat, an ancient Aqua Craft flat bottom in 1993. In the early 2000’s he restored another drag boat, a 1977 Cole Runner bottom, and raced it several years. In 2017, he bought and literally remade another relic, a 1985 rail in terminal shades of disrepair and graduated to drag car racing on surfaces a bit more stable than water. Are you beginning to see a pattern with the reconstitution of antique race conveyances? Four months later Troy again was off to the races. So, what does this have to do with manufacturing? It’s all about filling a universal need. When you stuff a 27 foot long dragster into a 28 Burn Out foot trailer, where do you put your tools, fuel, oil, spark plugs, belts, pullies, spare parts, and all the other necessary gear? As a born-from-the-crib racer, you not only need lightning-fast reflexes and a lead foot, you need a quick brain as well. Troy surveyed the cramped race trailer with a drag car filling 90% of it and thought, “I do have five walls!” and immediately began visualizing. In tandem in with his son and partner Jordan, they began designing. They filled the walls with vertical cabinets, drawer sets, tie down racks, fuel funnel holders, fuel jug holders – first to meet his exacting needs, then for the other hundreds of privateer racers everywhere. The concept of ThunderStruck RaceCo was hatched. Anyone who has been involved in motorsport racing of any type knows you need to grab and go.You have no time to hunt for tools or spare parts – you must be organized and efficient.
