And….specializing in Prototype and R&D work. You just can’t find companies like this. Mountain View Machine & Welding, also known as MVMW, is a manufacturing entity tucked away in Logan, a small college town in northern Utah, less than 1.5 hours from Salt Lake City. And though Logan is by all measures a small town, parts made from MVMW are shipped throughout the United States and even internationally.

Cliff Abbott, long term employee (20years) for the company, says, “Work at MVMW is always interesting. On any given day we can be repairing a manure spreader, manufacturing a component for the food industry, and making components for the F-15. We are just so diversified, both in the products we make and the manufacturing we do.” Cliff adds that the company doesn’t turn away walk-ins, and it is not unusual to have a farmer come to the shop for help machining a part. The company also manufactures a number of parts that go into mission critical defense and aerospace products.

Jason Crook, owner of Mountain View Machine & Welding, Inc, began as a journeyman machinist working in the U.S. Navy, U.S. Air Force, and Thiokol (now Orbital ATK). He had been a machinist and a shop foreman; yet knew he could better serve his community using his knowledge and experience with his own family-run business. And so, nearly 3 decades ago, MVMW was launched by Jason and his wife Tricia in the family’s garage with two machines. All 9 of Jason and Tricia’s children have been part of the business throughout its history, with son Rob expected to run the company in its long term succession plan. Today, the company resides in its 26,000 square foot facility and is preparing its expansion, with an adjacent 37,500 square foot building nearly complete.

Business continues to be good for MVMW, and even during the years prior to and after the pandemic, it sees consistent year over year growth. Cliff says, “Jason recognizes how critical it is for us to continuously invest in technology if we want to remain competitive. We believe in supporting our customers with as much of the machining and processes done in house as possible, so that we can best control the quality and delivery.” Today, MVMW is a single source supplier to some of their largest customers. Jason says, “Our machinists

aren’t just button pushers. Every machinist we employ does their own programming, or if they are newer to the industry, they will be trained to machine and program their own machines.” Cliff says that great machinists really value the fact that Jason invests in some of the best, most sophisticated technology for the business.

Jason is not only a gifted machinist, but he is also a natural as a business owner. MVMW is a great place to work, and it retains a family like atmosphere where employees want to come to work. Cliff says that Jason knows how challenging it is to get and retain great team members and treating employees as he would want to be treated helps to install employee loyalty. “Also”, Cliff adds,” Jason does a really good job of selecting customers. Over the years, we have helped to create a base of customers that come from many different industries, though we also have increased the percentage of our business that is Department of Defense (DoD) and aerospace focused.” MVMW’s planned diversification helps them to better manage through economic downturns.

Both Jason and Cliff are the closest you come to sales at MVMW, though both admit they aren’t out knocking on doors. Cliff says, “The way we win new customers is almost always referrals that come to us when a current supplier can’t meet the customers’ expectations. We are called on to get the customer out of a bind, and then when we make the parts right, we win a new customer.”

For many of their larger customers, MVMW is on the ‘Approved Supplier List’. Jason says that one of their larger customers years ago went through the process of reducing their Approved Supplier List. “They went from 1800 down to 600, and we made the cut for the much smaller list”, he adds. It is clearly Jason’s philosophy to re-invest profits into the business regularly, and he frequently utilizes the IRS Section 179 deduction to help fund new capital equipment purchases. Most recently, the company purchased two new Mazak machines ,both VTC-800/30SD Vertical Machining Centers. Cliff says the VTC-800/30SD machines feature a high speed 40 Taper spindle, swivel spindle head (B-axis), full traveling-column design and two rotary tables for machining critical parts in the aerospace industry. He says that thanks to the additional axis, MVMW can reduce the total number of machining operations for significant increases in productivity. He adds that the dual synchronized rotary tables create two separate work areas with full 5-axis simultaneous machining. Cliff says the new machines are well suited for the missle launcher project the company is supporting. When you need complex parts, including Aerospace and Defense parts done right, utilizing the best machining technology available, you should contact MVMW. Not only do they accept R&D and prototype projects, but it is also their specialty. Contact them at : (435) 755-0500 or visit mvmwinc.com
