Editor’s Corner It’s a new day, and we all act in a very new way! I have seen more neighbors in the past month than I ever knew existed. There are folks riding bikes with their kids, chalking up the sidewalks with Hopscotch, messages of faith, strength, and good vibes. It’s like we took a trip, back in time to Mayberry.Yep, there’s Andy, Aunt Bee, Barney, and even Opie Taylor. We visit with our neighbors, from across the street, and now we even know them. We talk about everything under the Sun, positive things. We ask if they need anything, toilet paper, sugar, or anything we may have a little extra of. Walking the dogs, riding bikes, and jogging seem to be the new norm, and everyone waves now. Yes, saying hello in passing is a very old ritual that started in rural communities and a respectful way of bonding the community and acknowledging camaraderie. Well we’re all doing it now and I hope it never ends! It’s hard to believe, as a society we have to be told, no, ordered to stop, and smell the roses. We are reading more books, learning new recipes, working a lot outside, cleaning our own houses, cutting our own hair, and some are doing a poor job on their nails. It takes times like this to make us realize that time is so very precious, yet dissipating in front of our eyes like the sand running through the hour glass. Resilient Contemplation I had time to think today, I let nothing get in the way. I thought about a time long past, as I poured the sand back into the glass. The memories were so sweet, like walking by the ocean in bare feet. I could smell the pine trees whispering in the air, the wind in my hair. The peace that, having enough time can insure, the solace, that patience can endure. From adversity, we find resilience is born, while we bend, our confidence is not torn. Until next issue, keep the faith, be safe, and enjoy this new Mayberry. God Bless all of our humans that help save lives!

The What, How And Why: A Guide To Hiring In A Crisis How to hire during a pandemic — 1. Replace face-to-face interviews with online video interviews With travel restrictions in place all over the world, it is increasingly difficult for people to meet face-to-face. Moreover, many will not want to meet face-to-face in fear of contamination.Video interviewing and video conferencing are great alternatives. We live in a digital age where there is an array of video conferencing tools, the most popular being Microsoft Teams, Zoom, and Skype. Nick Pearce, Director and Founder of Alexander Daniels Global, says video conferencing can yield just as great results as face-to-face interviews; “As an example, I have placed a Senior VP of Sales into an organization, who had five interviews, all of which were conducted by video conferencing, connecting people from all over the world from different parts of the business. The decision to hire this very senior person was made, without any one of the people inside the organisation meeting the candidate physically,” says Nick Pearce. 2. Structured process Key to making video conferencing work is adopting a structured

hiring approach and treating the interview the same as a face-to-face interview. It is vital to a successful video interview, that the company takes its time to get to know the candidate to establish rapport; ask questions about their background and experience and do some competency-based assessment during the interviews. 3. Clear communication Having a clear communication and clear course of action is crucial to making remote hiring work.Make sure all of the decision makers within the business have contact with the intended candidate. As long as these initiatives are taken, decisions can and should still be made using video conferencing and remote hiring. What about the fear of downsizing? Another important consideration from companies during this crisis is the need for downsizing; one reaction to a crisis, and turndown in revenue or cashflow issues, would be to cut the headcount. The same consequence as above applies; if this sharp downturn is followed by a sharp upturn, downsizing could see businesses lose knowledge and resources that may be instrumental in taking advantage of the upturn and growth in the market, as we come out of the crisis. Cutting back on personnel is a short-term fix, that could ultimately impact the business more in the long term. A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST •

THINBIT® Tools Manufactured By Kaiser Tool Company Are Helping In The Fight Against COVID-19 If you are manufacturing medical equipment, medication or supplies in support of the COVID-19 virus, you will definitely want to contact KaiserTool Company. With their THINBIT® line of tooling, the company is a world leader in the manufacturing of precision cutting tools for grooving, threading and boring. The company is dedicated to supporting those in need during this pandemic, and if you let them know that the tools you need will be used to manufacture medical equipment and supplies, they will prioritize your order so that they can ship you the tools, custom or off the shelf, typically turning them around the same day. Ken King, Chief Operating Officer for the Woman-Owned company, says, “We are dedicated to helping manufacturing companies who are producing COVID-19 products. We know that the customers who are calling us are under the gun to tool up quickly – after all, what they are manufacturing will be saving lives. In support of these efforts, we charge no expedite fees, and we strive to turn our customers’ tools around same day.” Ken says that THINBIT® inserts are used for molding and sealing grooves that are an integral step in manufacturing ventilators. He said Kaiser Tool Company is supporting US and international customers, who are manufacturing medical products, and the company has assisted a customer in the automotive industry who is tasked with retooling their manufacturing line to begin manufacturing ventilators. The transition to quick turn, fast delivery with high quality required to support COVID-19 efforts wasn’t onerous for Kaiser Tool, as they have had many of the processes and equipment in place for years. Ken says, “We run 24x7, and our employees work alongside a number of robots (who don’t ever get sick), which we’ve been utilizing for the past 2 decades. Our automation is a key driver in enabling same or next day shipments .” The company did make some internal changes to support external Covid-19 efforts, Ken says. “Our standard operating procedures use N95 masks on the manufacturing line. Since there is such a shortage in the market today, we made process changes to enable our team to work safely with standard masks recommended by the CDC. Once we accomplished this, we were able to donate N95 masks to First Responders, doctors and nurses in our region, to support the front line.” Theresa Lorenzini, Executive Assistant with the company, says, “Each and every one of our employees is proud to be able to contribute positively to help in this effort to fight this pandemic.”

History of the company: Kaiser Tool Company was founded in 1964 with the purpose of supplying small lathe cutting tools. William (Bill) Kaiser owned a job shop and was constantly hand grinding grooving tools to the size he needed. Bill realized there was a need for small, ready to use grooving tools. He decided to make tools starting at .004” of an inch and available in .001” increments. Bill changed the focus of the business to producing grooving tools and applied for patent 3,296,683. Lathe tools were known as bits and the tools were thin. THINBIT® was chosen as the product name. Hazel and Bill’s daughter Lenore Perry joined the company in March 1980, and today she is president of the company. Lenore says that over the past decades, “We’ve added equipment, gone into debt, paid off debt and added more equipment. Accomplishments, disappointments, happy times, sad times and always steady 16 •2020 APR - MAY ‘20

growth” She adds, “Oh- and just in case you did not know – the name “Littlebit” – was my dad’s nickname for me way before THINBIT® started. I always was “not very tall”.” The company today has expanded their tool line from exclusively lathe tooling to now also include mill tooling.

Hear From Some Customers: “I am lost for words. A truly amazing response. Please thank everyone in Kaiser Tool for what can only be described as a superhuman effort.” “I am writing to commend the service that I receive on my tooling requests. My requests have all been custom geometry grooving inserts. I want to thank Doug on how well and quickly he addresses my needs. I must also commend the people in the shop that make my inserts. Keep up the good work.” “THINBIT® tools are a proven problem solver for small diameter trepanning and face grooving. The Ventilator Guru: An Earthquake And A Blizzard Didn’t Stop Tyler Vermey From Traveling 1,400 Miles To Enlist In The Fight Against COVID-19

by Chris Noon

Tyler Vermey knew something was happening when his boss called on a Sunday. The engineer, who was relaxing at home in Salt Lake City with his wife, Krista, and their beloved springer spaniel, Bruno, doesn’t get many weekend calls from his manager. “I was caught a little offguard,” he admits. But his boss had an urgent message:Vermey was needed at GE Healthcare’s manufacturing plant in Madison, Wisconsin — pretty much immediately. Vermey had some idea why.The Madison factory, which makes ventilator machines, was gearing up for a huge production boost as the fight against COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus, reached global dimensions.Vermey has formidable knowledge of ventilator valves, the vital components that regulate the oxygen and airflow in and out of a patient’s lungs. In fact, he knows so much about these precision components, he’s been called “the valve guru.” “While we attempt to automate parts of the process, there’s a certain amount of expertise and hands-on experience that is so valuable in making valves,” says Mark Goyette, general manager of Life Care Solutions (LCS) Operations at GE Healthcare. “Tyler was the manufacturing engineer in that area for many years. He knows the test equipment, the intricacies of assembly and the fine details of what to look for. He’s the perfect person to help train the second and third shift.”

Vermey is now safely situated in Madison, but his 1,400-mile journey from Utah to Wisconsin is already the stuff of legend with his colleagues at GE Healthcare. The morning of Wednesday, March 18, the day before he was set to fly to Madison, a 5.7 magnitude earthquake struck the Salt Lake City area. It was the strongest quake in decades: “That was an experience — I felt it pretty significantly,”Vermey says. “It must have lasted 15 seconds, but it felt like a few minutes.” He and Krista grabbed Bruno, who is paralyzed, and dashed outside to safety.Vermey took it as a sign. “We decided to drive to Madison as a family,” he says. “We packed up and got out of the house.” But Mother Nature wasn’t finished with them yet.TheVermeys had decided to split the 20-hour journey to Madison — which stretches across all of Wyoming, Nebraska and Iowa — over two days, starting Wednesday morning. But that plan was scuppered Wednesday night, when they hit a massive snowstorm near theWyoming-Nebraska border. “It was like nothing I had ever seen before,”Vermey says. They stopped at the next town to escape the whiteout and spent Thursday in a hotel room while it blew through.

Team Vermey finally made it to Madison just before dawn Saturday, after three full days on the road. “I felt like BruceWillis in ‘Armageddon,’” jokes Vermey. It’s a fair comparison to the 1998 movie:Willis plays an ordinary guy with extraordinary expertise (deep-sea drilling) who ends up making the difference.

In more normal times, Vermey works at GE Healthcare in Salt Lake City, supporting the production of components that help sharpen X-ray images. But he also knows ventilator valves inside-out and back to front. After graduating from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Vermey joined GE Healthcare in the summer of 2016, just as the company was bringing its valve production in-house. The ensuing six months was a crash course in valve procurement and production. Vermey says he quickly learned the names of all the suppliers and their products, and more than a thing or two about the science of valve manufacturing. Along the way, he started to understand the intricate valves and their unique quirks. Valve production is complex and requires careful calibration. “It’s tough to put into words,” the guru says, then launches into a detailed technical description of the two-inch, high-flow ventilator control valve for the machines Madison is pumping out around the clock. This valve has four main components, Vermey explains: the nozzle, seat, bellows and armature. Each part is precision-made to within a tenth of a millimeter — about the width of a human hair. This allows regulation of airflow to and from the patient as required. Mixed materials add to the complexity. While the housing of the flow control valve is made from aluminum, the nozzle and seat, which are manufactured together to work as a pair, are made from steel. “We use a special crystallized slurry to get the nozzle and seat to a certain surface finish,” Vermey says. Once Vermey and his fellow ventilator experts check the parts, it’s time to assemble the valve. The process includes a tricky step called “nozzlejacking”: “You insert a special rod into the nozzle and hit it with a hammer

until you feel it go in.” It’s not easy to articulate how he knows the rod is set, Vermey says. “I just know.” These delicate operations all take place in the controlled environment of the valve room. About the size of a two-bedroom New York City apartment, it uses humidifiers to maintain moisture levels and air monitors to measure measure particle concentration. “If tiny pieces of debris get in the valve, it will affect how it functions,” Vermey explains. “That’s why everyone wears a smock.”The valve room is windowed off from the production line, so each side can see the other in action. Some 100 extra workers and volunteers have shown up in Madison in recent weeks to join the ventilator-production effort. Vermey, who normally works on X-ray machine components in Salt Lake City, acts as a teacher, a qualitycontrol expert and an all-around trouble-shooter. Image credit: GE Healthcare. “People [likeVermey] want to do whatever they can to help to improve lives in moments that matter,” says Goyette, the Life Care Solutions general manager. “He’s the perfect person to train up others even as production continues in the background. He knows the test equipment, the intricacies and fine details of assembly.” Indeed,Vermey is one of 100 added workers and volunteers who set aside their normal lives to converge on the factory floor in Madison. These paperwork prodigies, assembly-line ninjas and component gurus all bring something to the table. “We’ve got engineers, product workers from different factories, retired people, materials specialists, shop supervisors,” Goyette says. “It’s phenomenal to see [these] men and women coming together like this.”

Automation Nations: A View Of How Industry Will Transform Itself After The Pandemic Millions of Americans have been told by state officials to stay home to help slow the spread of the coronavirus. But working from home isn’t an option for everyone, and some operations deemed essential and allowed to stay open can’t slow down or stop, even temporarily: Utilities have to keep the lights on and the water running, for instance. Others, like industrial manufacturers, are urgently needed to respond to the demands of the day, whether that’s medical equipment like ventilators and respirators or food and household goods like paper towels and toilet paper. But an increasing number of those industries had already been making their processes smarter, through digital technologies like automation, artificial intelligence, and virtual and augmented reality. These technologies have been helping some manufacturers steer their way through the current crisis, pointing to how industry could adapt once it passes. To gain some insight, GE Reports caught up with Craig Resnick, vice president of consulting for the market research firm ARC Advisory Group, who offered his thoughts on how the current crisis may affect business models in the near A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST •

• 800-686-1679 • info@gmnusa • www.gmnusa.com future and beyond. “‘Normal’ tomorrow is going to be completely different than today,” Resnick said. “The companies able to react the fastest are the companies that are going to win in the long term.” An edited version of our conversation follows. GE Reports: What’s been the industry’s first reaction to the pandemic? Craig Resnick: Nobody predicted a pandemic paralyzing the global economy. Businesses are saying they need to be better prepared from a digital transformation perspective, because the only certainty going forward is uncertainty. GER: How is that different from before? CR: We used to hear about companies being worried about the ability to access a plant or a factory that might be taken down by a hurricane, tornado or flood, for example. But with whole countries going under lockdown, how do you manage not having real-time visibility into the supply chain? How do you keep things moving if you’re in a no-staff situation? GER: How are individual sectors reacting? CR: We’ve been getting a lot of calls from the pulp and paper industry, for example. Even with the massive surge in demand for tissue products, these are products that don’t have expiration dates, so they may soon

experience a downtick in demand. At the same time, with an uptick in demand for home delivery from Amazon and others, it changes the type of paper products they need to produce. Food and beverage companies, and to a lesser extent pharmaceutical companies, are starting to skip distribution centers and ship directly to consumers or to Amazon, which reships to consumers. The need for paper manufacturers to be flexible with types of packaging has gone through the roof.

3518 E Wood St, Phoenix, AZ

GER: How will this affect how factories operate? CR: In the old days, you’d shut the factory down for a couple of months for retooling. Now you’re in a situation where you need to have the right kind of automated machinery on the factory floor to support changing settings to manufacturing based on almost immediate data. The companies able to react the fastest are the companies that are going to win in the long term. Even if in the short term companies can’t be spending money on [these] projects, they’re all in the bunker planning for it now.

Automation will eliminate some repetitive tasks from the workforce, Resnick says, “but the number of technology jobs being created to support this digital infrastructure is going to surge.” Above image courtesy of Craig Resnick. Virus-Killing Robot Developed By TCD Start-Up Akara Robotics Device Clinically Proven To Kill Viruses And Bacteria Irish scientists at Akara Robotics have developed a robotic technology to help keep hospitals clean of coronavirus. Kevin O’Sullivan Environment & Science Editor A robot emitting ultraviolet light (UVC) with the ability to disinfect hospitals and get rid of the Covid-19 virus has been developed by a start-up attached to Trinity College Dublin. Being able to clean healthcare facilities thoroughly and quickly is hugely demanding as coronavirus cases escalate. Created by Akara Robotics, it is clinically proven to kill viruses, bacteria and harmful germs, and does so in a much shorter time compared to usual cleaning methods, according to its inventor Dr Conor McGinn.

based solutions, which may be effective but requires rooms to be vacated for several hours during sterilisation, making them impractical for many parts of the hospital,” said Dr McGinn. In addition, many pieces of high-tech equipment cannot be disinfected using “deep chemicals”, so manual cleaning is needed. Robot Violet is also effective in such circumstances, he said. The start-up was spun out of TCD’s Robotics & Innovation Lab, which is best known for creating Stevie, a social robot making friends with carers and older people in residential care settings. Dr McGinn turned his attention to the sterilisation properties of UVC about a year ago.

Robot Violet was tested in an acute hospital in the Dublin area last week after Dr McGinn contacted the HSE indicating it would be effective in tackling the Covid-19 pandemic in healthcare settings. They are awaiting microbiological test results to confirm its effectiveness.

wavelengths to break down DNA in microbes, which stops them from replicating. In the case of a virus it can arrest spread of infection. The technology is used in other countries, but the TCD robot is the first in Ireland to be used in such circumstances. Akara has been experimenting with UVC sterilisation, performing tests to determine the wavelength, distance and angles that achieve the best results.

Dr McGinn said he was confident the technology would be effective in hospitals, though some adjustment for particular settings to get its approach right, informed by the test results, may be needed. Typically, a CAT scan takes a few minutes to operate but an hour to clean after use. Rooms in hospitals can take up to five hours to sterilise, while the robotic light-based solution can halve the time required, it is claimed. However, Dr McGinn said bathing a room in UVC was best deployed as a complement to other cleaning methods. He said the HSE was supportive but acting in the best interests of the public and its staff, so it wanted verification on the robot’s effectiveness in killing bugs; validation in a clinical setting and assurance it can be used in practical ways by cleaning staff and does not harm users. “We are very happy with the progress we are making,” he said, while awaiting test results from TCD microbiologist Dr Michael Beckett on

the robot’s use in a clinical setting. Safety features UVC can damage skin and eyes, but Robot Violet has a range of safety features to protect those using it, that also allow it to be deployed in high-traffic areas where existing cleaning approaches fall short. It uses artificial intelligence to shut down if a human unexpectedly appears in front of it while in operation. Arkara Robotics, which employs seven people, has the ability to make up to 50 devices in coming weeks subject to getting some parts, said Dr McGinn, and to have the first device fully deployed in an Irish hospital as early as next week. This involved use of a short-term model as it was developing more advanced models for the longer term. The Manufacturer’s Secret Weapon Kick Worry to the Curb

By Stephen Hannemann

Unprecedented times in our world lay before us. Our situation calls for calm in the midst of media bombardment and hysteria. So how do we accomplish that feat? Eliminate worry from your lexicon! Before you react to that statement, hear the words of someone smarter than me: “Take possession of your own mind and worry will have to find another boarding house.” – Napoleon Hill. Worry causes fear, anxiety, frustration, and anger, along with a host of other physical and mental health issues. The best way to navigate the weeks ahead is to learn how to mitigate the demon worry, be strong, take care of loved ones, and make your plan on how you or your organization can help others coming out of this situation. Step One: Be accurately informed. Do not watch the mainstream talking heads. Research your own information from reliable sources – then make informed decisions based upon valid data. Another quote from someone smarter than me: “Smart leaders believe only half of what they hear. Discerning leaders know which half to believe.” – John Maxwell. Step Two: Now you have the facts – what have you learned in order to prepare or combat the situation? You adapt! Devote your energy to what you can control! Make informed strategies, not reactions to uninformed pessimism. Do not give energy to what you cannot control and embrace what you can with enthusiasm and optimism. StepThree: Live in the present. Bring Peace into your life and those you interact with, your family, your coworkers. Be the stability in your now compressed world. Think of reasons to be grateful. Be the example to those who are relying on you. This can be done remotely as well in these times. Step Four: Eliminate negative thoughts from your subconscious. Cultivate and reinforce a peaceful countenance.Your positive and tranquil energy will calm and inspire those around you. Think always of A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST •

your blessings and your demeanor will create happiness and hope in others. Create ways to help others outside your sphere; this brings joy to others and nourishes your spirit. Step Five: Take good care of yourself. Get proper rest before you become tired. Learn to take time to relax at your work. Clear your desk and set the next day’s agenda at the conclusion of your day’s work, even while working from home. Fully engage and encourage loved ones. Get exercise, eat well, and retire early. To sleep on demand, think of a minimum of three things that made you happy today and once again be thankful for the good things. Do not misunderstand, I get that these are extraordinary times never before experienced in our country and the modern world. But worry has no effect on the outcome that lies before us. At the time of this writing a lot of us are working from home. Hopefully by the time you read this article, and it is my prayer, the crisis will be waning and we will be settling in to a new normal. Our lives will be changed. Whatever form the future takes, we will be stronger having learned while embracing a positive posture, and kicking worry to the curb!
