“Honesty and transparency make you vulnerable. Be honest and transparent anyway.” Mother Teresa (1910-1997) I enjoyed one of the most honest responses to an email I sent to a potential customer this past month. When I asked him if he had received approvals to begin advertising, he promptly emailed me back. Here is the short email I received from him... “I am ignoring you for a couple more weeks. Please forgive me.” This response put a smile on my face, though I hadn’t secured a new order! For those of us in sales, and we all are, because we’ve always got to sell customers, internal and external, to make changes in what they are doing today. But it is indeed so refreshing when you get an honest answer, whether it is a “yes”, “not now”, “not ever”, “next year”, etc.Yet so many people believe they can’t be honest, sometimes brutally honest, and yet still be successful. What a concept, honest success. Sometimes it seems that these two concepts are not typically joined. Why? Because success is often an illusion that the business leader has created in his or her own mind, based on his or her perceptions, values and beliefs. According to a recent survey of corporate executives, nearly 90% equated their success with 1) the money they personally made, 2) the money the company made, or 3) the rise in the value of the company stock. The remaining 10% defined success by the “quality” of the products or services they provide, factors related to the “contentment” of the workforce (low turnover) or personal satisfaction in what they do. Actually any leader’s real success is based on other’s perceptions of who they are, what they do, how effective they are, their importance to the organization, and the money they make. So how do we get honest success? Rather than asking yourself how successful you are, you must ask others. Honest success means honest feedback. And just for grins, I looked into companies in our industry that were deemed honest and ethical. The World’s Most Ethical (WME) Companies designation recognizes companies that truly go beyond making statements about doing business “ethically” and translates those words into action. WME honorees not only promote ethical business standards and practices internally, they exceed legal compliance minimums and shape future industry standards by introducing best practices today. TheWME recognizes the companies who force other companies to follow their leadership or fall behind. These are the companies who use ethical leadership as a profit driver. And each of these companies embodies the true spirit of Ethisphere’s credo, “Good. Smart. Business. Profit.” The 2014 Aerospace/Defense Industry winners include: Elbit Systems of America, Rockwell Collins, and The Aerospace Corporation. In manufacturing overall, the 2014 U.S. winners include: 3M Company, Deere & Company, Eaton, General Electric Company, Johnson Controls, Kennametal Inc, Milliken & Company, and The Timken Company. It is worthwhile to look into companies deemed to be the best at honesty and ethical behavior. It is a quality we should all strive for. Not only does it make you feel good, it almost invariably leads to a more successful company for you and your team. And of course, for your customers. Until next issue, I wish you well.We should all work on always improving our honesty and ethics, both in business and in life. As always, God Bless Our Troops.

Lockheed Martin enters new arena: Drone systems

Why Contact Faustson Tool?

Lockheed Martin has been around for over 100 years, beginning with innovative work in 1912 that was cheered on by men like Orville Wright. Now, the company has entered slightly new territory: drone systems.

• We are a leader in 5 Axis Manufacturing Technology, Technology including 5 Axis Milling and 5 Axis EDM. • We have 30 Years of Experience Servicing Customers. Fauston Tool is a Woman Owned Small Business. • Our customers span the Aerospace, Defense, Medical, Semi-Conductor, Energy and Aeronautic industries.

One of the world’s largest companies to specialize in aerospace, defense and technology has now unveiled three new Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) systems, saidLockheed Martin.

• Our certifications include: ISO 9001:2000, JPL Flight Certified, Ball Flight Certified, MPC Flight Certified, LASP Flight Certified, ITAR Certified Ball Aerospace: First ever delegated supplier

Two versions of the Indago vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) quat-rotor drone were announced, in addition to a a commercial Avionics Suite for unmanned aircraft, information technology website C4ISR & Networks reported.

“The VTOL features a 360-degree panning capability to aid area surveillance and provide enhanced situational awareness and actionable imagery in support of emergency response needs including search and rescue situations, disaster relief or other surveillance missions,” Lockheed Martin said. The Indago drone is only 5 pounds and requires no assembly. “After two years of developing these capabilities, we will now be able to deliver affordable and effective products to both military and commercial customers,” said Kevin Westfall, director of unmanned solutions at Lockheed Martin’s Mission Systems and Training division. NASA To Test Ways Larger UAVs Can Fly In National Airspace Bloomberg News reported that NASA is using a Predator UAV in flight tests to develop the “sense-and-avoid technology” that will allow large UAVs to safely fly above 18,000 feet where airliners do. Live drills using a Predator and piloted aircraft will begin at the Armstrong Flight Facility in 2015. Chuck Johnson, senior adviser for unmanned and autonomous systems at NASA, said, “You could see down the road aircraft that are very large flying in the national airspace that are either remotely operated or semi-autonomously operated.” The article noted that because larger UAVs can be fitted with the same equipment piloted planes have, it should be easier to incorporate them into U.S. airspace, possibly as early as 2018, according to Johnson. He added, “This is about getting the rules aligned so that any commercial entity can take advantage of them.” A2Z METALWORKER

Lockheed eyes avatars, 3D printing to lower satellite costs Lockheed Martin Corp, the Pentagon’s biggest supplier, is ramping up its use of 3D printing and virtual reality simulators to drive down the huge costs of producing national security satellites and safeguard profits in the face of reductions in U.S. defense spending. The company expects to finalize a government contract to buy two new missile-warning satellites in coming weeks for 40 percent less than projected by Pentagon cost estimators due to changes in its manufacturing methods, plant closures and layoffs. Analysts say the deal will be worth around $2 billion. “We’re trying to find new ways of doing things. We’re leaving no stone unturned,” Mark Valerio, vice president and general manager of military space for Lockheed, told Reuters in an interview at the company’s facility south of Denver. Valerio said Lockheed was pushing hard to continue lowering costs so it could maintain strong operating profits even as lower military spending squeezed revenues. “We haven’t hit a wall yet,” he said. “But that’s when you bring in technology.” He said Lockheed had reached agreement with the Air Force on the 5th and 6th Space-Based Infrared System (SBIRS) missile-warning satellites, and hoped to finalize the details by early July, the comA2Z METALWORKER

pany’s first confirmation a contract is near. Last year, Lockheed signed a deal with the Air Force for a separate program to build two military communications satellites for $2.2 billion, $1 billion less than initially expected. Lockheed, which built the first Titan intercontinental ballistic missile at the Littleton, Colorado, site in 1955, and Boeing Co have long dominated the U.S. government military space market. But the weapons makers are scrambling to cut costs and hold onto their share of the military satellite market, given a downturn in U.S. military spending, and efforts by the U.S. Air Force to bring in new competitors. The cost of military satellite programs has begun to edge lower in recent years, but most bigger satellites still cost upwards of $1 billion to build since it is difficult to achieve the economies of scale seen on weapons with large volumes. Those costs have driven the Air Force to study smaller satellites that would be less complex to build and cheaper to launch, an area that is drawing interest from smaller companies that have long been shut out of the lucrative market. Lockheed executives say additive manufacturing, or 3D printing, could trim the weight of key components on spacecraft, allowing the government to pack on more sensors, or launch satellites on

smaller, less expensive rockets. Lockheed engineers are evaluating which satellite components could be made with an in-house 3D printer instead of sending specifications to outside suppliers. That could save money and bring more manufacturing back to Lockheed, which relies on suppliers to build about 60 percent of its satellites.

Time Is Money. Start Here and SAVE!

The new manufacturing process allows Lockheed to use fine titanium dust to build lighter-weight parts than possible with older machining techniques and reduces waste, said Dennis Little, vice president of production. Valerio said he was confident the government would eventually approve use of 3D parts on the new SBIRS and other military satellites, noting no major concerns had been raised. “We’ll get there; it’s not that hard, he said. Lockheed’s interplanetary Juno aircraft, which was launched in 2011 to carry out a NASA mission over Jupiter, carries a part made with 3D printing, and similar parts are used on the company’s revamped A2100 commercial satellites. Valerio said Lockheed was also working on using the new manufacturing technology to build propulsion tanks.

The same technology helped Lockheed streamline its production process for a new batch of Global Positioning System (GPS) satellites, reducing the number of times the spacecraft must be lifted during manufacturing by 64 percent, and cutting the distance it travels in the factory by 48 percent, he said.

Lockheed is also using a new virtual reality and simulation laboratory at the Littleton site to work through challenges before starting production. The equipment allows human avatars to interact with machines and streamline production processes.

Kush Patel, who heads a small aerospace consultancy, Relative Dynamics Inc, said Lockheed and other arms makers were turning to civilian commercial markets for ideas on how to save money.

Valerio said the lab helped Lockheed brainstorm a cheaper and far less disruptive way to replace a faulty circuit card on a SBIRS satellite three years ago, saving $150 million and averting a lengthy round of re-testing.

“When anyone’s under pressure, that’s when they’re going to shine, or they’re going to lose, he said. “When you are under pressure, you’re going to do what you have to do to survive. Source: (Reuters) A2Z METALWORKER

A crowdfunding effort has raised $125,000 to make contact with a 36-year-old NASA spacecraft that’s been dormant for 17 years. The private project hopes to make course corrections to reuse the International Sun-Earth Explorer 3 probe no later than mid-June, when the craft makes a close approach to Earth. “Next month is crucial to the success of our project. ...The spacecraft gets about the distance from the Earth to the moon closer each day, and now every day the amount of propulsion burn it takes to make the trajectory correction grows,” said Dennis Wingo, co-leader of the project. Rep. Michaud: DoD Decision A Win For Manufacturers Roll Call carries an op-ed by Rep. Michael Michaud (D-ME) applauding a decision by the Department of Defense to start procuring footwear for the American military from American manufacturers. Michaud calls the decision of the DoD “nothing short of a huge win for American manufacturers.” Michaud highlights how domestic footwear manufacturers like New Balance will be able to support jobs and create a “vibrant” community. Michaud notes the decision by the DoD “is a powerful reminder that when American manufacturers win, Americans everywhere win.”

College Graduates Encouraged To Seek Work In West The Denver Post reports that given the fact that Colorado and other Western states have seen greater economic regrowth since the recession, economists are encouraging recent college graduates to settle there and in other states in the region. The Post notes that economists are hailing the strong job market, high wages, and relatively low rents in Denver, and notes that there is a strong demand for workers in technical and scientific jobs.

City of Boulder, CO Deploys Envision Solar EV ARC™

OIL MIST AND SMOKE IN YOUR SHOP?

Envision Solar announced that the City of Boulder, Colorado has expanded their electric vehicle charging program with the installation of two new Envision Solar EV ARC™ standalone Solar Charging Stations. These two fully renewably energized EV chargers are located at the East Boulder Community Center and the Broadway & Spruce Parking Lot and are available free of charge to the public.

Low-Cost, Highly Efficient Mist and Smoke Collectors Designed Specifically for the Metalworking Industry www.mistcollectors.com 1-800-645-4174

The EV ARC™ is a cost-effective, easy-to-install, standalone solar charging station that requires no foundation, trenching, building permit or grid connection. Invented, engineered and manufactured in the United States, the EV ARC™ fits inside a standard parking space and generates approximately 16 kWhrs per day that are stored and ready for use in the 22 kWh on board battery storage. The system’s clean solar electrical generation is enhanced by the patented EnvisionTrak™, which enables the solar array to follow the sun, generating 18 to 25 percent more electricity than a conventional fixed array. Glenn Magee, Construction Manager for the City of Boulder Department of Public Works said, “This represents some completely sustainable technologies, it is a fully self sufficient operation. We’re not tapping any power from any source, it’s generated through the solar panels and it goes directly to the charger. It’s totally sustainable and a complete use of our natural resources.”

“These deployments in Boulder really demonstrate the value of the EV ARC,” said Desmond Wheatley, CEO of Envision Solar. “It was not economically feasible to run trenching and grid connections

to these important locations but the EV ARC delivers EV charging where traditional chargers cannot which represents a huge opportunity for this product and our company. We are proud to have the City of Boulder as a customer and look forward to working with them and other cities to deliver renewably energized EV charging without the difficult or sometimes impossible tasks associated with tying to the grid.” Source: eSolarEnergyNews

Manufacturers Have Positive Outlook, Says ISM Survey Bloomberg News reports a survey by the Institute for Supply Management shows that manufacturers are more optimistic about demand and capital spending. Purchasing managers surveyed projected sales to grow by 5.3 percent this year. The survey also reported that manufacturers estimate their spending on new equipment and plants to rise 10.3 percent, and for employment to rise by 1.4 percent. Those in the service sector who were surveyed also reported they expected growth this year. Special operations’ technology gets smaller, more agile

See What AMBA Members That Use Cimatron Say: “Our efficiency has been increasing incredibly. I know it has impacted our bottom line. We can take on more business, because we are not spending as much time in design. The flow from design to manufacturing is much smoother, shortening our delivery dates, making us more efficient and improving quality.” Kent Smith, President, Diamond Tool & Engineering “Cimatron has really helped us stay ahead of the curve when it comes to creating more sophisticated molds, such as those required for products with blended curves. Without Cimatron in place, designing and producing such goods would be nearly impossible.” Thomas LaMarca, Jr., Owner, L&Z Tool and Engineering “We believe one of the things that sets LS Mold apart from other shops is our Cimatron CAD/CAM capabilities. Cimatron really listened to our needs and it shows in how they implement our requirements in the software. The modeling package is first rate. It particularly shines in electrode creation. Customer support from Cimatron is outstanding.” Jim Dent/David Koning, LS Mold

Communication tools used for special operations forces have to be able to provide secure data, video and voice transmission without a lot of bulk. Increasingly, the Navy SEALS, Army Rangers, Air Commandos, and other special operations forces are able to use small, agile tools to communicate securely. “The technology evolution we are seeing now allows devices to interoperate on multitude of host nation networks while still providing an acceptable level of security and protection without the cost or manpower of deploying private networks,” said Chris Herndon, chief technology officer and vice president of the national security group at SRA International. Manufacturers Combat Skill Shortage InVarious Ways 1/16/13 10:45 AM The Inquirer reports that a lack of skill in manufacturing is leaving jobs unfilled, according to a survey by the Federal Reserve Bank. Of the companies surveyed, 50 percent reported “a gap between the skills their businesses need and the skills available in the labor pool.” In order to combat this problem, 40 percent said they were partnering with educational institutions, and a third said they were raising wages. Only four percent said the shortages had affected their production levels. A2Z METALWORKER

Poll Finds Economists Say Oil And Gas Exports Will Help Economy The AP reports “the vast majority of economists” say that removing restrictions on oil and natural 3/21/14 gas exports “would help the economy even if it meant higher fuel prices for consumers,” according to an AP poll of 30 economists.

lidCAM_A2Z_QVert.indd 1

Those polled said that allowing exports would increase investment in oil and gas production and transport, create jobs, increase the stability of oil and gas supplies and reduce the US trade deficit. Still, there is at least some concern, the AP reports, that increasing natural gas exports would disproportionately harm those with lower incomes, and discourage investment based on the presumption of a US cost advantage.

Data Shows Positive Future For Manufacturers The AP reports that spending by some key industrial companies indicates that a stronger economy and more jobs could be on the way. General Electric, Honeywell, and Caterpillar’s recent financial A2Z METALWORKER

results have been strong, and economists say that means that other companies are ordering equipment to grow their business. One expert interviewed said that industrial companies are showing a real demand and that the nation could be on the brink of the inflection point where the economy takes off. A steadily growing US and European economy coupled with decreases in Chinese growth and political stability have all contributed to a positive economic outlook for manufacturers.

According to the Christian Science Monitor, “an ultrathin wire developed by researchers could someday make today’s flatscreen televisions and tablets look ridiculously bulky by comparison.” The article notes that “by exposing special semiconducting materials known as transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) to a weak beam of electrons, lead researcher Junhao Lin, a Vanderbilt University Ph.D. student and visiting scientist at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and his team have developed flexible metallic wires that are just three atoms wide.” ORNL’s Wu Zhou said, “Junhao used a scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM) that is capable of focusing a beam of electrons down to a width of half an angstrom (about half the size of an atom) and aims this beam with exquisite precision.”

even find a textbook until just recently. The text, however, mainly focuses on the technology and regulation environment revolving around UASs. Yet with some certification, such as that being offered by Rocky, Wilson foresees aviation graduates stepping into jobs that pay $75,000 to $125,000 a year. “Our objective for students is to have a working knowledge of the UAV environment,” he said, using another phrase for the aircraft. Right now, that environment is pretty hazy thanks to a lack of regulation by the Federal Aviation Administration, which is supposed to have regulations out by 2015. But Wilson said the framework for safely operating UASs has already been outlined: don’t fly them at altitudes above 400 feet, avoid conflicts with other aircraft and stay at least five miles away from airports. If UASs are operated above 400 feet,Wilson said the pilots should have some sort of certification. But Wilson said the FAA is like the highway patrol cop pulling over the blatant speeders, the FAA will only go after the most egregious violators. Operators who aren’t thumbing their noses at the FAA or embarrassing the agency won’t be prosecuted, he said, partly because the FAA doesn’t have enough people to go after everyone.

Don’t call them drones: Rocky Mountain College offers course in unmanned aerial systems The future of flight may feature more unmanned aircraft hauling cargo, according to Rocky Mountain College aviation professor Scott Wilson, so he’s helping to train pilots how to operate such unmanned aerial systems, or UASs.

Cameras capable of shooting still photos or video images can be mounted to the UASs, making them useful for photographers and videographers. The Stillwater County Sheriff’s Department recently purchased a UAS that has an infrared camera that can be used to detect the thermal signature of a human during search and rescue operations. “You get 10 times the surveillance for one-tenth of the cost,” Wilson said. “That’s a huge savings.”

“Many of my colleagues say the last fighter pilot has already been born,” Wilson said during a discussion of the classwork.

Because of the video and photography capability provided by UASs, Wilson said surveys have shown the public is skeptical of or concerned about the usage of the aircraft. That’s also one reason the industry never calls them drones — which carries a negative military connotation. He said the biggest problem is balancing the rights of citizens to privacy with commercial operators conducting business.

The class was added to the Billings college’s aviation program this spring, joining what has become a quickly expanding interest in the systems for a variety of applications ranging from agriculture to real estate and search and rescue.

Conservative predictions are that there will be 10,000 UAS operators within the next five years. The problem is that the UAS industry is traveling at “Mach 1,” Wilson said, while the FAA is trying to catch up in an automobile.

For example, in Japan, Wilson said 90 percent of the crop dusting is done by UASs, which can range in size from fist-sized toys powered by batteries to full-sized aircraft used by the military.

Newly graduated Rocky senior Ryan Rojeski helped form the program, which has six small UASs. He hopes to become a Navy fighter pilot and transition into the space program. Rojeski said there will always be a need for pilots, as well as for operators of unmanned aerial systems.

“We figured we had to get something going here at Rocky,” Wilson said. A few other colleges, such as the University of North Dakota, already offer degrees in unmanned aircraft systems. Wilson said when he began looking into offering a course, he couldn’t A2Z METALWORKER

years ago, the same year that Allen joined the company. The two married, and are now co-owners of A&L Machining, a woman-owned entity. Lorrie says, “We are so fortunate to have the team that works at A&L. More than 40% of our team has been with the company for 10 plus years, many over 20 years. We even have one employee with 38 years of tenure.” When asked why employees stay at A&L Machining, it is quickly apparent that they appreciate the working environment the company affords them. Allen says, “We offer a four day work week, at 10 hours a day. Our team members enjoy the flexibility a 3 day weekend offers them.” Lorrie continued, “During the economic downturns, we all cut our hours so that we didn’t have to lay off any of our valuable employees. That is why they are still with us today.”

The formula for success in a job shop seems relatively intuitive. Hire experts in the trade, particularly journeymen machinists, and treat them well so that they remain at the company. Find great customers and support them better than your competitors, offering quality parts on time and at a fair price. Buy superior machine tools to increase your efficiencies, decrease run times and minimize operations to make your precision parts. Continue to find ways to improve your efficiency, costs and quality. Find more great customers and support them better than your competitors. Do what you say you are going to do. Always. And when this can’t be done, communicate to your customers to ensure their requirements are met. A&L Machining Inc. does just that, and we’ll tell you how.

Superior Employees Allen Dvoracek came to the company, then named Cole Manufacturing 30 years ago, in 1984. He was still just a kid, 4 and half years out of high school, and with just that many years of machining experience under his belt. Allen says, “I went to work for Storage Technology Corporation (STC) the day after I graduated from high school. My first job at STC was in the deburring department.” Though Allen progressed in STC’s machine shop, like many others, he found himself part of the company’s layoffs. When this happened, he contacted Ed Cole, and found himself a job the day after he was laid off. No unemployment for Allen. He was just that kind of person. Lorrie Dvoracek also came to work for Cole Manufacturing 30 A2Z METALWORKER

Treat your valuable employees well and they will stay. It’s working for A&L Machining, and it is an integral part of their formula for success.

Great Customers Ed Cole found some very great customers in the Rocky Mountain and Midwestern United States when he founded the business in 1969, 45 years ago. The company serves primarily the energy and defense industries, and they are a Tier 1 supplier to some of their longest-term customers. Unlike many job shops, A&L Machining does a lot of production quantity work for their customers, and they offer kanban. Allen says, “Kanban is an effective tool in support of running a production system as a whole, and it proves to be an excellent way for promoting improvement.” He continued, “One of the main benefits of Kanban is to establish an upper limit to the work in progress inventory, avoiding overloading of the manufacturing system.” Lorrie and Allen both agree that their superior team of employees, and their extremely low employee turnover, has been one of the main reasons that they are able to secure production work. Lorrie says, “We have some fundamental principles that we adhere to with our customers. We don’t bump customers, we don’t charge expedite fees, and we manage our schedules to still enable quick turns for our customers.” She continued, “Our customers have wonderful, innovative ideas, and our goal is to support them to be successful.” Lorrie and Allen are hands-on owners, and this helps to ensure a smooth and well-run operation.

Best in Class Machine Tools Allen says, “Machine tool acquisitions are less costly than employee expenses. If you don’t have the best machine tools that are up and running, then you

are spending more money on people (employees) that are running inefficient equipment that is subject to failure.” Today, the company owns 6 DMG/Mori Seiki machine tools, as well as various other high precision machine tool lines. They can machine parts from 3/16” in diameter to those as large as 18”, depending upon the configuration of the part.Their machine tools enable lights out manufacturing, and today they machine parts 4 hours each day unattended. The company offers its customers superior inspection capabilities, with a Brown & Sharp CMM, and 2 full time inspectors. Their latest machine tool purchase was the DMG/Mori NLX2500SY. Dave Sulak, 16-year tenured Sales engineer for Triad Machine Tool Company, says, “Allen purchased the DMG/Mori NLX 2500SY/700 with counter spindle and Y axis because it offers efficient complete machining in one clamping operation.” He continued, “The NLX2500SY added capacity for A&L Machining and it facilitated ‘gear hobbing’. Until recently, dedicated hobbing machines were the only option for gear production. However it’s not always practical to purchase these machines if your production quantities don’t warrant it. Fortunately, CNC lathes have come into their own in recent years and are no longer just two-axis turning centers. Today these machines can be used for much more than turning. DMG/Mori Seiki NLX2500SY offers a hobbing option for lathes that allows the syncing of the spindle and the milling tool to produce gears or splines.” This latest purchase enabled A&L Machining to bring grinding and hobbing in house. In essence they can do hard turning

(turning a heat treated part for A&L, they can hard turn 62 Rockwell and above) and gear hobbing in one process. For one of their customers, the DMG/ Mori NLX2500SY reduced the number of operations from 5 to 1. Lorrie says, “We were running 3 operations on the part, and then the customer completed 2 additional operations.Today, we are running this complete part in one operation.” She continued, “Not only were we able to machine the part faster with one operation, we were able to improve the quality of the parts we are making. Less operations mean less non-conformances.” The company also recently purchased the Mori Seiki NHX4000 high-precision, high-speed horizontal machining center with a 6-position pallet pull. Dave says, “The NHX Series of high-precision, high-speed horizontal machining centers offers high-speed, high-rigidity and high-precision machining. It also offers improved positioning accuracy by reducing weight of moving parts including a column.Additionally, it has achieved an approximately 40% reduction in total power consumption compared to the conventional models. It was an excellent machine tool choice for Allen and A&L Machining.” A&L Machining also has a MasterCam license, which they purchased from Triad Machine Tool Company. Allen appreciates that Triad is an authorized MasterCam dealer with a full MasterCam training center in-house. Triad Machine Tool Company offers a classroom with multiple workstations used for teaching and they employ an application engineer who teaches the MasterCam classes. Allen says, “I have been buying from Triad Machine Tool Company for many years now. They are extremely service oriented, and we value the fact that they don’t just try to sell us on a machine tool. They come in and understand what we are trying to achieve prior to making a recommendation.” He continued, “It also helps that they offer a superior line of machine tools.” Dave says, “Allen is bold in his constant investment in the latest technology. He always stays up with the latest technology, and welcomes tooling sales personnel in to visit him -- this ensures he is constantly learning about new products that can continually improve his company’s efficiencies.” To learn more about A&L Machining, contact them at 303-373-1540 or email them at sales@andlmachining.com. Triad MachineTool Company is a Full Service MachineTool supplier serving Colorado, New Mexico and Wyoming. Triad Machine Tool Company was founded in 1984 on the premise of providing superior customer service and support. They offer a tenured staff with an average of more than 12 years with the company. Their service department includes 8 service engineers and 2 applications engineers, all resident in Colorado. Dave says that this means that most customer support is provided by Triad Machine Tool direct. They rarely have to rely on the machine tool equipment manufacturer for their customer support. The Wall Street Journal reports that new data from the Department of Commerce released last month shows that personal consumption was up 0.9 percent in March, the largest gain since August 2009. Economists surveyed by the Journal had expected a 0.6% increase. In addition, February’s gain of 0.3% was revised upward to an increase of 0.5%. The Journal says that consumer spending is responsible for more than 2/3rds of US GDP growth. Meanwhile, the same report also showed that personal income was up 0.5% in March, more than the 0.4% expected by economists. McClatchy reports that despite the poor first quarter GDP data, “new indicators Thursday gave reason to think that the economy is in better shape than the growth numbers suggested.” McClatchy said that the growth in personal income and spending, combined with ADP’s jobs report on Wednesday, suggested that the economy is rebounding as the second quarter progresses.

Wind powers Xcel Energy to top of the charts — again Xcel Energy Inc. is at the top of the list for the amount of wind-based energy the eight-state utility has on its system, according to a new report from the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA). This is the 10th year in a row the energy company nabbed the top spot. At the end of 2013, Minneapolis-based Xcel had 5,080 megawatts of wind energy on its electricity grid, enough wind power to meet the energy needs of about 2.5 million homes, according to the utility. Wind was about 15 percent of the company’s total energy supply at the end of last year. And Xcel says it expects wind will be more than 20 percent of its total energy portfolio by 2020, the utility said. “Xcel Energy is proud to be among the nation’s leaders in delivering affordable, clean energy from renewable sources,” said Ben Fowke, the chairman, president and CEO of Minneapolis-based Xcel. “We embraced wind energy early because it’s clean, cost-effective and will protect our customers against rising fuel prices in the future,” Fowke said. Nationwide, the U.S. industry ended 2013 with 61,110 megawatts (MW) operating in the U.S. across 46,100 wind turbines in 39 states and Puerto Rico, according to AWEA, based in Washington, D.C. The trade issued its “AWEA U.S. Wind Industry Annual Market Report Year Ending 2013” earlier this month. It’s available here. AWEA said the U.S. has 905 big wind farms operating, and their power production was more than 4 percent of the nation’s electricity portfolio during 2013. The wind farms, collectively, are capable of meeting the electricity

US Changes H-1BVisa Laws To Allow Spouses To Work The AP reports the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Commerce announced Tuesday that they will be publishing a rule in the Federal Register that will allow the spouses of H-1B high-skilled visa holders to work legally in the United States. The rule will help appease tech firms that have claimed it has been a hindrance to attracting talented workers in the past. Reuters reports that US Commerce Secretary Penny Pritzker said the immigrants are “US families in waiting.” Deputy Homeland Security Secretary Daniel Mayorkas said that 97,000 people would be affected this year with the rule change, and that another 30,000 individuals will be affected annually moving forward. The Washington Post reports the Boston Consulting Group issued a report studying the manufacturing costs in the 25 largest exporting countries. The study concludes that US manufacturers have grown more competitive when compared with other major nations over the last decade. Only seven of the 25 countries in the study had lower manufacturing costs than the United States did this year. In one example, manufacturing costs in China went from being 14 percent less to only 5 percent less in the last decade. The report projects that manufacturing in the US will be less expensive than in China by 2018.

The Atlantic reports on the possibility of using drones to maintain large solar plants. The article notes the difficulty of maintaining a large-scale solar plant, using as an example the 290-megawatt Agua Calientie solar plant in Arizona. The plant, which is selling its power to Pacific Gas & Electric under a 25-year contract, “consists of 5.2 million photovoltaic modules spread over nearly 10 square miles,” and “finding a faulty module is a time and labor-intensive endeavor.” The Atlantic highlights the San Francisco start-up Skycatch, which “has developed a small and cheap drone outfitted with a high-resolution camera and various sensors” and can find failing solar modules by using their distinctive heat signature. The article goes on to provide more details about Skycatch drones, noting that the company is also hoping to see them used in the future for “conducting wildlife surveys and detecting when a protected animal has wandered onto a power plant site so it can be removed before it’s hurt.”

Longmont company growing withVestas business, moving to Berthoud

Creative Foam Composite Systems is moving from its current Longmont location to an 84,524-square-foot heavy manufacturing building in Berthoud to better help the rebounding Vestas Wind Systems with increased orders core kits for wind turbines. The Fenton, Mich.-based company, a division of Creative Foam Corp., signed a 5-year lease for 77,707 square feet at 2221 Clayton Place, Berthoud, according to Kirk Vanino of Cushman & Wakefield of Colorado Inc., who represented Creative Foam. It’s moving from 1800 Pike Road, Longmont.

The building’s owner is remodeling the building, adding heavy power and a fire sprinkler system to accommodate Creative Foam, which will move “within the next few months,” Vanino said. The company’s expansion is due largely to more orders from Danish company Vestas, which has had a strong 2014 in terms of growth and orders for its wind turbines.

Vanino said the Creative Foam expects to double the number of employees to 60 with the expansion. “This wind industry is a relatively new industry in the U.S.A. and it appears Creative Foam has succeeded in the last two years in becoming the ‘go to company’ in the USA for core kits in the wind turbine industry,” Vanino said. “They are currently struggling to keep up with quoting new job opportunities due to all the new customers coming to them with opportunities. They are also getting more and more interest from other industries, including aerospace.”

Colorado breaks record for annual oil production Colorado energy companies produced nearly 64.1 million barrels of oil during 2013, breaking a record for full-year production that’s stood for nearly 60 years, according to state regulators. The 2013 production also represents a 30 percent increase over the state’s 2012 production — and is more than double the amount of oil Colorado produced in 2008, according to the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission (COGCC), which oversees the state’s multi-billion dollar industry. Colorado’s oil and gas companies produced a new record of 64,080,502 barrels of oil in 2013, according to the COGCC’s final figures for last year. Of that, Weld County — where billions of dollars is being invested in new oil and gas wells, pipelines, processing plants — accounted for 51,929,899 barrels, or 81 percent of the state’s total production in 2013. In 2012, the state produced 49,308,440 barrels of oil, and Weld County accounted for 36,643,485 barrels, or 74 percent of that year’s total, according to state records. In 2008 — before the latest oil boom hit the state — Colorado’s energy companies produced 29,607,936 barrels of oil. Colorado’s previous oil production record was 61,995,205 barrels, a mark the state hit in 1956, according to the COGCC. The Denver Business Journal first broke the news in March that the state’s oil production had broken the 1956 record.

ISM Report Shows Manufacturing Activity Accelerating. The Wall Street Journal reports that the Institute for Supply Management’s National Manufacturing Index jumped to 54.9 in April from 53.7 in March, indicating that the pace of acceleration of the manufacturing sector increased last month. ISM’s Bradley Holcomb said, “We are building month over month…and creating some good momentum for the rest of the year.” Bloomberg News reports that t the economy “is poised to lift off in the second quarter.” Bloomberg says that the data “bear out the view of Federal Reserve policy makers who yesterday looked beyond weak growth in the first quarter and projected the world’s largest economy would speed up.” A2Z METALWORKER

New Boeing jets hold key to more than half of future sales

777-300ER, the 787 and the 777X, allowing pilots to fly all three aircraft with as little as five days of additional training.

Boeing Co said it expects to finish flight testing its stretched 787-9 Dreamliner in the next two months and deliver it around mid-year, one of six new jets the world’s biggest plane-maker aims to get into service by the end of the decade.

Here are capsule summaries of the status of the three programs:

Boeing will start fabricating parts for its 737 MAX jetliner this year, keeping that new development program on course for final assembly to start by mid-2015 and service entry in 2017, company officials said in media briefings made public last month. The company also is “well along” in choosing suppliers for its 777X wide-body jet, due to enter service in 2020, though officials would not elaborate on the extent of selection. The three jets are part of a major overhaul of Boeing’s product lines that is “harvesting” technology and lessons from the its original high-tech 787 Dreamliner and adding efficient new engines to make 737 and 777 models that burn less fuel, fly more easily and provide passengers with more comfort. Chicago-based Boeing is fiercely competing with new models from European rival Airbus Group NV (AIR.PA) to capture its share of a world jetliner market estimated at $4.8 trillion over the next 20 years. The three jetliner families will account for more than half of Boeing’s commercial plane sales over 20 years, said Scott Fancher, senior vice president for airplane development. “What we have in work today really is the future of Boeing Commercial Airplanes,” he said.

787-9 and 787-10 Boeing said the Hybrid Laminar Flow Control system on the tail fin and horizontal stabilizer of the 787-9 produced “significant” reduction in aerodynamic drag in testing, but the company declined to be specific. Boeing plans to use HLFC on the 787-10 but has not decided if it is worth putting on future 787-8 models, said Ed Petkus, deputy chief project engineer for 787 airplane development. Fancher said Boeing assembly lines in North Charleston, South Carolina and Everett, Washington, would provide flexibility about where to assemble 787-9 and 787-10s, although he declined to say if North Charleston would build either model. The 787-10, which is undergoing detailed design, will cost 10 percent less to operate than the Airbus A350-900 on a per-seat basis and will have at least 26 more seats, said Jim Haas, Boeing’s director of product marketing. Airbus said in response that the A350 offers 6 percent better fuel efficiency than the current 787-8. 737 MAX While still under development, the 737 MAX is “meeting or exceeding our performance targets,” including 8 percent lower fuel consumption than the Airbus A320neo on a per-seat basis, when configured with 12 more seats, said Keith Leverkuhn, 737 MAX general manager.

Boeing is redesigning the 777X and 737 MAX cockpits to make them mirror the 787 design, including larger displays and other features, making it easier for pilots to move from one aircraft type to another and reducing airline costs.

Boeing said it will build the air inlet for the engine itself, capturing what is typically a high profit-margin component. The current supplier of part is United Technologies .

Boeing said it will seek a common pilot type certification for the

lina,” Leverkuhn said. The Airbus A320neo family was launched nearly a year before the 737 MAX, and has garnered about 58 percent of total single-aisle sales of the two jets. But Boeing says the 737 MAX has outsold its rival since coming to the market, garnering about 55 percent. Currently, Airbus has firm orders for 2,667 A320neos versus 1,939 for the 737 MAX. Boeing said the 737 MAX will be 14 percent more efficient that its current 737. It said 11 percent of the gain comes from the engine and airframe combination, and the rest from aerodynamic improvements. The jet is due to enter service in the third quarter of 2017, Leverkuhn said.

is twenty percent lighter, thirty percent less costly and ninety-nine percent smokeless, releasing but a few drops of pure water after deployment. The product was engineered by Autoliv employees located at the company’s Technical Center in Vårgarda, Sweden. “This new inflator represents a collection of new inventions. The net result: a better, lighter, more environmentally friendly airbag that saves lives and reduces cost”, said Johan Löfvenholm, Autoliv’s Chief Technology Officer. “Our mission is focused on saving lives — and Autoliv is proud to champion continuous innovation within our industry.”

777X

Autoliv together with Volvo Car were also recognized as “Innovation Partnership Award” winners for the Pedestrian Protection Airbag on the Volvo V40 and XC40.This new airbag aims to decrease the impact sustained by a pedestrian when coming in contact with the vehicle. In such a collision, the hood of the car would raise and a U-shaped airbag would deploy externally upon the windshield to cover the scuttle, A-pillars and lower parts of the windshield.

Design of the 777X, a new version of Boeing’s top-selling widebody jet, is “very stable,” Fancher said.

Autoliv previously won the PACE Award in 2000 for the Side Hybrid Gas Generator and in 2007 for the Safety Vent Airbag.

The design will try to replicate the low noise, higher humidity and higher cabin pressure of the composite-body 787 in the aluminum fuselage of the 777. Boeing also wants to keep the reliability of the 777. Source: Reuters/Jim Young

Sponsored by Automotive News, Ernst & Young and the Transportation Research Center, the 20th annual PACE awards program celebrates innovation by original-equipment suppliers in the development of new products and processes. The awards are judged independently and were announced at the 2014 PACE Awards banquet on April 7, 2014.

In designing the MAX, Boeing is trying to retain the jet’s high reliability and also make it easy to build, because even as the company introduces the new MAX version, it plans to raise the production rate to 47 a month in 2017 from 42 a month currently.

Autoliv Wins Automotive News PACE Award For “Green” Airbag Inflator Autoliv, Inc. , the worldwide leader in automotive safety systems, was announced as a winner of the prestigious 2014 Automotive News PACE (Premier Automotive Suppliers’ Contribution to Excellence) Award for innovative “green” inflator. The “green” inflator ignites hydrogen, rather than pyrotechnic substances, and creates the combustion inside the airbag cushion rather than in a heavy inflator pressure vessel, allowing for the use of a much thinner container for the inflator. The result is an inflator that

Companies welcome satellite export reform Satellites and their parts will no longer be treated like weapons when it comes to overseas export, following changes in the U.S. Munitions List, a revamp long sought by the U.S. satellite industry. The change is welcomed by the industry, which says it’s suffered as a result of products facing tougher rules for export. The Aerospace Industries Association said that considering satellites as weapons cost U.S. industry $21 billion in revenue from 1999 to 2009. was named president of the Commercial Ventures business at Lockheed Martin Space Systems (LMSS) in December. The Denver area’s job growth comes amid consolidation for parent company Lockheed Martin Corp. nationally. Late last year, the company decided to close the Newtown manufacturing site and move the commercial space business done there to new cleanrooms and offices at LMSS headquarters. Out of about 1,000 workers in Newtown, 350 of them chose to move with their jobs, Hamel said. They’ll add to about 3,900 people working for LMSS locally. About 200 of the relocated LMSS workers will focus almost exclusively on commercial satellite production, design and engineering and related work. The remainder will primarily be tied to commercial space projects but share their expertise across other civilian and military projects at LMSS, Hamel said. LMSS’ commercial imaging satellite technologies are primarily produced at the division’s site in Sunnyvale, California. More than 40 Lockheed commercial satellites have launched in the past couple decades, and they’ve amassed more than 400 years of combined in-orbit service, Hamel said.

Lockheed Martin Space Systems adding hundreds of commercial space jobs to Colorado HQ Lockheed Martin Space Systems Co. will start adding hundreds of jobs in commercial satellite design and manufacturing to its headquarters campus southwest of Denver next month. The large space contractor, the area’s largest private-sector aerospace employer, is relocating 350 employees from its Newtown, Pennsylvania, site to its headquarters near the mouth of Waterton Canyon in Jefferson County. A few employees have already made the move, but most of the relocating workers will arrive in June and July after a new commercial space operations center is fleshed out on the campus. “By the latter part of this year, we will have consolidated the vast majority of commercial space business here,” said Mike Hamel, a former Air Force lieutenant general and space program expert who A2Z METALWORKER

LMSS wants to reinvigorate its business in commercial communications satellites, and moving the commercial space group will allow the company to draw from different talent pools as it hires in the future, Hamel said. Existing fleets of commercial satellites around worldwide are aging and needing replacement satellites built, while demand for satellite communications is expanding to parts of the developing world that have not historically been customers for commercial satellites in the past.Source: Denver Business Journal

TCI’s Three Generations Supporting Their Customers With Exactly What They Want!

Today the Belzer’s business continues its evolution in a building of 105,000 sq. ft.They remain firmly committed to their mission statement, understanding what their customers want and need and then do their very best to provide it.

TCI Precision Metals, Los Angeles, CA has been built and managed by Burt, John, and Ben Belzer for 3 generations supplying “Machine Ready Blanks” to machine shops and OEMs all over the United States. The company strategically saves their customers a lot of money by basically eliminating as many as the first 5 operations of their job travelers.TCI Precision Metals is a company that has proven experience, certified quality and dependable service providing specialty cut and ground-to-size metals and supply chain innovation since 1956. Years ago, after the Great Depression, Burt Belzer had the good fortune to land a job as the youngest person to work at the Belle City Malleable Iron Company in Racine, WI. Burt worked to provide traceability for the origin of every part made in the plant and grew to love metallurgy. When Burt’s Army stint was over he went back to school to obtain a business degree. After graduating and marrying his sweetheart, Gerry, they made a decision to strike out for California where eventually his cousin offered him a job at Pioneer Tool & Engineering as an office manager and he learned the business of melting metal and making cast aluminum tooling plate. Burt later became a salesman for the company and was given a territory around the LA airport and called on the job shops that supported the aircraft industry.

John Belzer, the company’s president, was raised in the business and held the family work ethic very close to his heart. The education John obtained has helped him grow a very lean and progressive business. He began his career in the business while still in high school, working on the shop floor in many areas of the manufacturing facility. After graduating from Colorado College in 1973 with a B.A. in Economics he went to work in the family business and has been president of the company since 1988.

Good Parts On Time Period!

Precision at every operation.

One of TCI Precision Metals’ core values is “to be a Quality Corporate Citizen” which includes “… actively supporting our industry”. John was chairman of the NTMA (National Tooling and Machining Association) in 2002 and has led the national Budget and Finance Team for the last 9 years. He also served 6 years as a trustee for the LA/NTMA Training Centers of Southern California. An industry advocate, Mr. Belzer also currently serves as a board member of the National Institute for Metalworking Skills (NIMS). TCI Precision Metals has been a member of the National Tooling and Machining Association (NTMA) since 1976. I interviewed John and asked him for his secret sauce. John said, “We are all about adding value to the customer. We look for every opportunity to save our customers time on their work. Most everyone understands material. Not many understand the Machine-Ready Blank and the value of taking those first 5 to 7 steps of purchasing, outside processing, and prep work out of the equation for the customer and decreasing their throughput time to allow for more capacity on their equipment.”

Early on, Burt teamed up with his friend, Ken Fritch, a tool engineer at Pioneer. They decided they would become an industrial distributor of jig and fixture hardware, calling themselves Tool TCI’s double disk grinding operation removes Components, Inc., while also using their experisurface material from both sides equally, ence from the aluminum cast plate business they relieving material stress and came from. The Middle East and North Africa markets are attractive to Western suppliers because governments there generally are open to contractors’ sales pitches before they settle on what equipment they want, said Aleksandar Jovovic, a senior associate at Avascent. “These governments tend to not write long RFIs or RFPs, they tend to look to industry for solutions,” he said. “It’s a ‘shapeable’ market where customers are looking to be educated on what’s out there.” Top-line defense spending in the Middle East and North Africa, led by Saudi Arabia and the Emirates, will top $120 billion per year by 2016, with roughly one third destined for procurement of new weapons, he said.

Nearly $100 billion in defense sales are up for grabs in the Middle East and North Africa through 2019, along with tens of billions of dollars in services and support contracts, according to new estimates by the consulting firm Avascent. The region’s largest spenders are Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Iraq and Algeria. “SOFEX looks to be pretty active this year,” saidTheodore Karasik, director of research and consultancy at the Institute for Near East and Gulf Military Analysis, based in Dubai. Every country in the Middle East is shopping for some type of military equipment, Karasik said during a conference call with analysts. Besides rockets and small arms, the most sought-after items at this year’s show are mine-resistant armored trucks and special operations helicopters, he said. “Oshkosh is doing a great job selling their products in the region,” Karasik said of the Wisconsin-based manufacturer of military trucks. The Middle East is experiencing “monumental changes” as governments face both internal and external threats, he said. Officials in the region, meanwhile, see the United States becoming distracted and disinterested. Fear and uncertainty, Karasik said, are fueling the demand for weaponry. The region is in a state of turmoil, he added, buffeted by regime change, A2Z METALWORKER

Jovovic cautioned that weapons manufacturers have a limited window of time to score Middle East deals. The buildup will not go on indefinitely, especially if the price of oil comes down, he said. A drastic drop in oil prices would put the brakes on arms procurement, he said. And small countries, although wealthy, can only absorb so much equipment. Patrick N.Theros, former U.S. ambassador and currently president and executive director of the U.S.-Qatar Business Council, said instability in the Middle East is here to stay. “The Arab Spring is not a short term event,” he said during a conference call. Theros compared it to the European revolutions of 1848. It started out as a wave of rebellions that were crushed, but set off about 100 years of war, he said. “I don’t know that it will take 100 years in the Middle East,” but unrest will be lasting. This will be a rolling revolution,” said Theros. Governments in the past worried about outside invasions or attacks whereas now the greater threat to their survival will be internal. For U.S. weapons manufacturers, Saudi Arabia has been a promised land of sorts. Now the world’s fourth largest military spender, the kingdom has become a key customer for U.S. arms suppliers. One of the Pentagon’s top contractors, Northrop Grumman Corp., launched a new venture called Northrop Grumman Aviation Arabia, in partnership with local firms, to supply aviation support services. “We are looking for professionals to join the NGAA team in Saudi Arabia,” says the company’s website. The United Arab Emirates, too, have been a prime customer for U.S. firms. They are a tough buyer, though, because they demand significant work share, or “offsets,” as a condition of sale. That means arms sellers must invest in the country, generate jobs and share technology. Between 2011 and 2013, Western firms accumulated about $91 billion of offset obligations just with Saudi Arabia and the UAE, according to Avascent. The Emirates, with a population of just a million citizens, has built a domestic defense industry with at least 125 companies. Karasik believes that the Emirates’ next big prize might be the U.S. F-35 joint strike fighter. The UAE -- already in possession of the most advanced F-16 fighter fleet outside the United States -- stopped shopping for a new fighter because they are waiting for the F-35, he said. “They don’t want any other aircraft unless it’s fifth generation.”Whether the United States will sell the F-35 to the UAE has been the subject of speculation. One potential impediment is that Israel is an F-35 buyer, and Congress might object to the sale of fighters to an Arab country in light of the U.S. commitment to maintain Israel’s qualitative military edge. Nasa says new spacesuit one small step towards sending mankind to Mars Nasa unveiled its latest prototype spacesuit last month, after opening the decision to an online vote. The “Technology” design accrued just over 63% of the vote to overtake the competing designs, “Trends in Society” and “Biomimicry,” to become the newest Z-series suit. More than 230,000 votes were cast in the competition to determine the design of the Z-2 suit, which closed on 15 April. This suit will be the first suit tested in full vacuum conditions at Nasa’s John Space Center in Houston, where it will also be tested in a pool and on a false Mars surface. Nasa will build the suit using 3D human laser scans and 3D printing hardware. The winning design is expected to be ready for testing in November 2014. It builds off of tests on the Z-1 series Buzz Lightyear-esque design to make the Z-2 closer to being space-ready. Z-series suits are not intended for flight because they lack the high-performance materials needed for extreme space environments. Instead, results of testing the suits will be used to inform future space-ready suits. “With the agency laser focused on a path to Mars, work to develop the technologies astronauts one day will use to live and work on Mars has already begun,” Nasa said in a statement. “Each iteration of the A2Z METALWORKER

Ball Aerospace and the U.S. Air Force Unveil Technologies that Revolutionize the Life of a Quadriplegic Race Car Driver Ball Aerospace & Te c h n o l o g i e s C o r p. and the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) demonstrated n ew h u m a n performance technologies that help quadriplegic former IndyCar driver Sam Schmidt to safely drive a Corvette C7 ‘Stingray.’ Ball and the AFRL are collaborating on the initiative known as the SAM Project, standing for “semi-autonomous motorcar” with Arrow Electronics, Inc., Schmidt Peterson Motor Sports and Falci Adaptive Motorsports.

The demonstration took place at an airstrip near the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force atWright-Patterson Air Force Base, Dayton, Ohio. “In our work for the Air Force, we’re engineering technologies to prevent and lessen future injuries by learning how humans can effectively interact with machines,” said Tim Choate, Aerospace & Cyberspace Technologies senior business manager, Ball Aerospace. “These technologies are designed to restore independence and enhance warfighter autonomy, and have the added benefit of introducing a new generation of mobility and safety technologies that are critically important for disabled individuals.” Ball Aerospace led the creation of the human-machine interface and the driver guidance system that are key elements of the SAM Project. The Ball engineering team identified the driver’s abilities and matched them to what is needed to drive the car. Critical to this process was determining the optimal combination of machine-controlled and human-controlled functions. Mr. Schmidt was severely injured in an IndyCar accident 14 years ago that left him with no mobility from the shoulders down. Despite his injuries, Mr. Schmidt has the ability to move his head, which will allow the Ball team to convert the driver’s head movements into computer commands. These commands flow to the SAM vehicle’s central processor, to control the car’s steering, acceleration and braking. The SAM Project is a collaborative venture between Ball, AFRL, Arrow, Schmidt Peterson Motorsports, and Falci Adaptive Motorsports. The race car is the first of its kind developed to be driven on a race track and controlled only by an individual’s head. Schmidt will officially demonstrate the SAM vehicle at speed at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway later this month. Ball Aerospace & Technologies Corp. supports critical missions for national agencies such as the Department of Defense, NASA, NOAA and other U.S. government and commercial entities. The company develops and manufactures spacecraft, advanced instruments and sensors, components, data exploitation systems and RF solutions for strategic, tactical and scientific applications. Drone marketing still flying semi-high Drones may be the new billboards, as a new startup offers advertising banners on drones. DroneCast, based in Philadelphia, lets advertisers fly 6-feet-long, 2-feet-wide banners in the city 25 feet above the ground. The Federal Aviation Administration has attempted to ban commercial drones, but they keep popping up. “They warn you and inform you of the regulations,” said Jack Supple, CCO of Pocket Hercules, which promoted beer delivery via drones. “The next level is a stiffer warning. New Marine helicopter to be unveiled The first flight-test version of the U.S. Marine Corps’ new CH-53K helicopter will soon be unveiled to the public, a key general said. The “rollout” ceremony will occur at a Sikorsky Aircraft production facility in West Palm Beach, Fla., said Brig. Gen. Matthew Glavy, assistant deputy commandant for aviation for the Marines, who spoke at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) in Washington, D.C. Flight testing of the new aircraft is scheduled to begin later this year. The CH-53K is being developed to replace the Marines’ aging CH53E Super Stallion heavy-lift helicopter. The Marines plan to buy 200 CH-53Ks and begin fielding them in 2019 to transport troops, equipment and supplies from ships to land.

Good fences make good orbits: Air Force wants a better one The U.S. Air Force is looking to provide a better so-called space fence -- a service tracking the 50 years’ worth of debris cluttering Earth orbit. The fence is actually a high-frequency radar that identifies individual pieces of junk paired with vast computing capacity to predict where the debris will be at any given time and whether it will interfere with spacecraft. Bomber-Plane Budget by U.S. Air Force Projected to Double “The current goal is to achieve an initial capability in the mid-2020s” for the new Long-Range Strike Bomber while also upgrading the B-2 stealth bomber made by Northrop, seen here, and the older non-stealth B-1 and B-52, according to the plan that was submitted to Congress last month but had not previously been disclosed. The U.S. Air Force projects that its annual spending on long-range bombers will almost double after 2019 as it seeks a new stealth aircraft that may pit Northrop Grumman Corp. against a joint bid from Lockheed Martin Corp. and Boeing Co.

Sikorsky announced last month that it has begun testing a full-sized, non-flying version of the CH-53K to confirm the airframe’s structural strength.

The service’s total budget for bomber production and upgrades will jump to about $9.5 billion in fiscal 2020 from less than $5 billion for the year beginning Oct. 1, according to a Pentagon document obtained by Bloomberg News. After that, spending would remain greater than $9 billion a year before dropping to $8 billion in fiscal 2024.

Recycling Metals, Conserving Resources, Since 1961 for the new Long-Range Strike Bomber while also upgrading the B-2 stealth bomber made by Falls Church, Virginia-based Northrop and the older non-stealth B-1 and B-52, according to the plan that was submitted to Congress last month but had not previously been disclosed. The new bomber is described by the Air Force as vital to reaching far-flung, heavily defended targets worldwide. The service has said it may buy as many as 100 of the new aircraft in a program that may top $55 billion, generating billions of dollars in revenue for the contractor chosen to build it. Bethesda, Maryland-based Lockheed, the biggest U.S. government contractor, and Chicago-based Boeing, which is No. 2, said in October that they planned to bid on the project as a team. Northrop Grumman, which has the advantage of its experience on the B-2, hasn’t announced that it intends to bid. The report does doesn’t incorporate the constraints of the automatic budget cuts called sequestration, which are scheduled to resume in fiscal 2016.

In addition to funding for bomber programs, the Pentagon report, “Annual Aviation Inventory and Funding Plan” for fiscal years 2015 to 2044, outlines long-range plans for fighters, drones and helicopters. It anticipates continued purchases of Lockheed’s C-130J transport plane, buying 32 more by 2021 for use by special operations forces as AC-130 gunships. In addition, the Marine Corps will continue to purchase the aircraft, the first version of which flew in 1955, made at Lockheed’s Marietta, Georgia, facility as an aerial tanker, “expanding its inventory of this aircraft, which has proven its combat effectiveness and reliability.” Boeing’s P-8 Poseidon reconnaissance aircraft didn’t fare as well. The Pentagon said in the report that the Navy, “compelled by fiscal restraints,” has cut its planned inventory to 109 from 117. The report also outlines steps the Navy is taking to make up for delaying the purchase of 33 F-35C aircraft from Lockheed beyond fiscal 2019 for budget reasons.

These include extending the service lives of 150 Boeing F/A-18A-D jets and accelerating the conversion of older F/A-18C models into the newer E/F jet. The Navy also is undertaking a program to extend to 9,000 hours the current 6,000-flight-hour life of the E/F aircraft.

A $17.8 billion submarine contract, the biggest weapons deal announced by the U.S. military in more than a dozen years, kept Pentagon awards from sinking last month. The contract to General Dynamics Corp. and partner Huntington Ingalls Industries Inc. had been stuck in limbo during Congress’s budget squabbles last year. It was freed up when the president signed a $1.1 trillion spending bill in January, letting the Defense Department begin funding new projects again. April’s awards rose 84 percent to $35 billion from $19 billion a year earlier, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. Contracting specialists said the boost was an anomaly rather than an indication that military spending is rebounding. “This is more of a one-shot deal,” said Mark Amtower, a partner at Amtower & Co., a Clarksville, Maryland-based consulting firm specializing in government contracting. The five-year agreement for 10 Virginia-class submarines, announced April 28, is the Navy’s biggest-ever shipbuilding contract, according to Rear Admiral David Johnson, executive officer for submarines.
