Editors Corner
It’s June and half a year has basically flown by and summer is now here in full bloom. It is so beautiful here in Portland, Linda and I love it! I started looking at the pictures of the companies Linda and I took pictures of at the manufacturing shows so far this year and I was amazed at the determined, yet kind smiles everyone gave me. They are very amazing, talented, and dedicated people. Take a look at page 44 and you will see some of the best and the hardest working people in the industry. They work the manufacturing shows to help build their businesses and help your businesses. Standing for 6-8 hours a day for 2 to 3 days at a time is not as easy as it sounds. These dedicated General Managers, Engineers, Sales Pros, Marketing Pros, and simple laymen like myself share the news of manufacturing and we all offer our help to those who will open their minds to it. The latest and greatest innovation and information is alive and well at these Manufacturing Expos. A robot that can perform the mundane tasks of picking and placing items, raw material, and finished products, to software that now takes your CAD files effortlessly to numeric code for programming and machining product. The information attendees receive is first hand data that comes from the front line and the people relaying this data are professionals within their field. Some won’t sugar coat the current state of manufacturing, and then some will tell you a positive story with factual data to back up our U.S. re-shoring and our restructuring of the new U.S. manufacturing business model. I encourage you all to open your minds to some very progressive people and dynamic companies and to model your future direction after these successful people. On page 21 you will read about a superior stamping company that attends most all of the manufacturing expos and is highly innovative, Pacific Metal Stamping. On page 38 read about Dean Conti (Alpha Precision Machining, Inc.) and his proven business model utilizing Mazak Automated cells in his business. On page 28 read how Delcam has added probing capabilities to their FeatureCam software for in process inspection. On page 35 you will read about Ray Attiyah, Founder of Definity Partners and of his refreshing view point on manufacturing and on his take on who should be doing the mundane work of attaching Barbie doll arms and why it is better to look toward a true resurgence in American manufacturing, through innovation. Ray says, “Instead of simply asking, How do we bring more jobs back to America?” we should ask, “How do we create new and better jobs in America?” Here are some thoughts on how we can do that. First read his latest book “The Fearless Front Line”. Ray states, “In manufacturing, the degree of difficulty is innovation. Manufacturers will create new jobs when they take bold steps to increase innovation in their organizations. To do this they must proactively tackle difficult problems that no one has been able to solve and look to improve areas that aren’t necessarily broken. They need to stop measuring success based on doing better than they did two years ago, and start measuring success by looking at how they are improving relative to their competition. This type of proactive improvement takes courage and capacity, and requires leaders to really understand their customers and markets.” In closing I want to wish you all a very progressive and successful year. I also hope you take a little time off with your family and enjoy some of this great summer weather and make some memories. I know you all work hard, but you need to play hard as well. Please call me if you have a story that may inspire your fellow manufacturing family or if you need some help with business development. Thank you,

Flow Introduces Dynamic Waterjet® Cutting on the Affordable Mach 2c Flow International Corporation (NASDAQ: FLOW - News), High-speed, accurate cutting is now achievable on an affordable waterjet system. The Mach 2c, the newest member of the Flow Mach Series waterjet line, is now available with Dynamic Waterjet® taper compensation. Dynamic Waterjet was previously only available on Flow’s advanced Mach 3 and Mach 4 waterjet systems. Dynamic Waterjet produces faster, more accurate parts by adjusting taper angle with speed. Stream lag and taper are inherent issues in all waterjet cutting, previously only minimized by reducing cut speed. Dynamic Waterjet with Active Tolerance Control™ counters taper and stream lag using advanced SmartStream™ mathematical models. More than just a tilting cutting head, SmartStream technology changes the angle dynamically, based on cut speed, producing a better part in less time. “The new Mach 2c with Dynamic Waterjet allows our customers to expand their applications to higher precision work.” comments Chip Burnham, vice president of marketing for Flow International Corporation. “The precision motion system is capable of up to 800 ipm travel while maintaining tight tolerances. The Conference Board, a New York-based private research group, said Tuesday that its consumer confidence index rose in May to 76.2. That’s up from a reading of 69.0 in April and the highest since February 2008. The jump in confidence followed a separate report showing the housing recovery is strengthening. Home prices jumped 10.9 percent in March compared with a year ago, the most since April 2006, according to the Standard & Poor’s/Case Shiller 20-city index. All 20 cities showed year-over-year gains. Consumers’ confidence in the economy is watched closely because their spending accounts for about 70 percent of U.S. economic activity. federal spending cuts. Still, higher home prices and stocks gains are making Americans feel wealthier. That could offset some of the pinch from the tax increase and keep consumers spending. And the job market has improved steadily over the past six months. The economy has added an average of 208,000 a month since November. That’s well above the monthly average of 138,000 during the previous six months. The unemployment has fallen to a four-year low of 7.5 percent. Some of the decrease is because many people have given up looking for work. The government counts people as unemployed only if they are actively searching for a job. The overall economy grew at an annual rate of 2.5 percent in the January-March quarter, up from a rate of just 0.4 percent in the October-December quarter. The fastest expansion in consumer spending in more than two years drove economic growth in the first quarter. Many economists expect growth is slowing slightly in the current April-June quarter to a rate of between 2 percent and 2.5 percent. But there is hope among some economists that growth will strengthen in the second half of this year, boosted by the gains in housing and employment. A2Z METALWORKER NW •

Tesla Repays Department Of Energy Loan Nine Years Early Tesla Motors announced that it has paid off the entire loan awarded to the company by the Department of Energy in 2010. In addition to payments made in 2012 and Q1 2013, today’s wire of almost half a billion dollars ($451.8M) repays the full loan facility with interest. Following this payment,Tesla will be the only American car company to have fully repaid the government.
mately $1 billion in funds raised in last week’s concurrent offerings of common stock and convertible senior notes. Elon Musk, Tesla’s Chief Executive Officer and cofounder, purchased $100 million of common equity, the least secure portion of the offering. “I would like to thank the Department of Energy and the members of Congress and their staffs that worked hard to create the ATVM program, and particularly the American taxpayer from whom these funds originate,” said Elon Musk. “I hope we did you proud.”
For the first seven years since its founding in 2003,Tesla was funded entirely with private funds, led by Elon Musk. Tesla brought its Roadster sports car to market with a 30% gross margin, designed electric powertrains for Daimler (Mercedes) and had done preliminary design of the Model S all before receiving a government loan. In 2010,Tesla was awarded a milestone-based loan, requiring matching private capital obtained via public offering, by the DOE as part of the Advanced Technology Vehicle Manufacturing program. This program was signed into law by President Bush in 2008 and then awarded under the Obama administration in the years that followed. This program is often confused with the financial bailouts provided to the then bankrupt GM and Chrysler, who were ineligible for the ATVM program, because a requirement of that program was good financial health. MAPI Forecast: Optimism U.S. economic growth will be somewhat restrained, but not deterred, and improving fundamentals provide reason for optimism by the end of 2013 and through 2014, according to a new forecast. The Manufacturers Alliance for Productivity and Innovation (MAPI) Quarterly Economic Forecast predicts that inflation-adjusted gross domestic product (GDP) will expand 1.8 percent in 2013 and 2.8 percent in 2014, showing no change from MAPI’s February 2013 report. Manufacturing production, however, is expected to show growth of 3.1 percent in 2013 and 3.6 percent in 2014. The 2013 figure is an increase from 2.2 percent and the 2014 estimate is on par with the 3.6 percent predicted in the February forecast. “There are a number of reasons for an improved outlook,” noted MAPI Chief Economist Daniel J. Meckstroth, Ph.D. “Consumer deleveraging is close to an end and households have the capacity to use more credit; housing prices are rising and with that change comes a virtuous cycle of increasing wealth, consumption, and income that feeds back into more housing activity; pent-up demand is releasing postponed spending for consumer durable goods; and the job market is repairing itself—employment growth is more balanced among the various sectors.” Meckstroth noted that growth prospects might have been higher without the headwinds of wages rising lower than inflation; spendable income being reduced by higher taxes; government austerity worsening as sequestration cuts are reflected in spending reductions; and negative net exports both this year and next. Production in non-high-tech industries is expected to increase 3.0 percent in 2013 and 3.5 percent in 2014. High-tech manufacturing production, which accounts for approximately 10 percent of all manufacturing, is anticipated to grow 4.4 percent in 2013 and 6.1 percent in 2014. The forecast for inflation-adjusted investment in equipment and software is for growth of 5.6 percent in 2013 and 7.4 percent in 2014. Capital equipment spending in high-tech sectors will also rise. Inflation-adjusted expenditures for information processing equipment are anticipated to increase 6.3 percent in 2013 and 8.0 percent in 2014. MAPI expects industrial equipment expenditures to advance 5.0 percent in 2013 and 11.4 percent in 2014.The outlook for spending on transportation equipment is for growth of 1.6 percent in 2013 and 5.5 percent in 2014. FDA approves OHSU device for stroke and spinal patients The device is designed to rehabilitate damaged muscles. It uses robotic technology to help patients move areas affected by stroke and spinal cord injuries. Oregon Health and Science University on Thursday said the Food and Drug Administration has approved a device invented by one of its researchers to treat stroke and spinal cord-injury patients. The FDA clearance means OHSU researcher Dr. Paul Cordo and AMES Technology Inc. can sell the device as early as next year. The device is designed to rehabilitate damaged muscles. It uses robotic technology to help patients move areas affected by stroke and spinal cord injuries. “Taking stroke as an example, if a person survives the initial injury, the probability is about 50 percent that he or she will never recover any functional use of the affected limb,” Cordo said in a news release. “Clinicians have few options for the most severely disabled people other than working around their disabilities. How many other types of medical conditions can you think of where we give up on curing the worst
affected 50 percent of the affected population? We don’t think this is acceptable, so over the last 10 years, we’ve been working to come up with an alternative that is effective with the severely disabled, or at least able to bring them to the point that other therapies will be effective. The AMES rehabilitation device is the product of that decade of work.” Cordo is a professor in the OHSU Department of Biomedical Engineering and chief technology officer for AMES.

Still, most of the CEOs don’t expect growth to accelerate. They forecast growth of 2.2 percent this year, only slightly better than the 2.1 percent forecast in the first-quarter survey.
Small business owners are also a bit more optimistic, according to a separate survey by the National Federation of Independent Business, released Tuesday. The NFIB’s small business optimism index rose for the second straight month to 94.4. That’s the second-highest level since the recession began in December 2007. Greater confidence in future sales and economic growth drove the increase. Employers added 175,000 jobs in May, the government said last week, nearly matching the average job gains of the past year. The unemployment rate ticked up to 7.6 percent, but for a good reason: More Americans were confident they could find work and began searching for a job. The economy grew at a solid annual rate of 2.4 percent in the first three months of the year. Consumer spending rose at the fastest pace in more than two years. Economists worry that the federal spending cuts and higher Social Security taxes, which started Jan. 1, might be slowing growth in the April-June quarter to an annual rate of 2 percent or less. But many expect growth will pick up again at the end of the year. The Business Roundtable represents CEOs of the 200 largest U.S. corporations. The latest survey results are based on 141 responses received between May 13 and May 31. The group surveys CEOs about sales, capital spending and hiring. The results are combined into an index which gauges their outlook for the economy. That index rose to 84.3 from 81 in March and only 65.6 in December. Any reading above 50 suggests expansion. The current reading is above its long-term average of 79.2. The survey has been conducted for 11 years.
More Americans Quit Jobs, A Sign Of Confidence
World Class Manufactures!
More Americans are quitting their jobs, suggesting many are growing more confident in the job market.
Electric Press Brakes
The Labor Department said Tuesday that the number of people who quit their jobs in April jumped 7.2 percent to 2.25 million. That’s just below February’s level, which was the highest in 4 ½ years. Overall hiring also picked up in April, though not as dramatically. Employers filled 4.4 million jobs in April, a 5 percent increase from March. Hiring fell in March and April’s level was below February’s.
• Manual & Automac Models • 6 - 10 tons • 18” & 24” Throats
The report offered a reminder that the job market is far from healthy. The number of available jobs slipped fell 3 percent to a seasonally adjusted 3.75 million. Openings had reached a five-year high in February and remain nearly 7 percent higher than a year ago. Still, the growth in hiring and quits provides more evidence of a dynamic job market that is making slow but steady strides. It follows Friday’s May employment report, which showed the economy added a net 175,000 net jobs last month. That’s roughly in line with the average monthly gain over the past two years.

Janet Yellen, vice chair of the Federal Reserve, has said the Fed is monitoring data on quits and overall hiring for signs that the job market is improving in a sustainable way. The Fed says it will continue its ambitious program of bond purchases until employment improves substantially. The report, known as the Job Openings and Labor Turnover survey, provides the total number of people hired and laid off each month. It’s different from the department’s monthly jobs report, which provides each month’s net job gain or loss and the unemployment rate. By quantifying total hiring and layoffs, the JOLTS report paints www.facebook.com/a2zmetalworker
a fuller picture of what employers are doing. For example, for the past two years net job gains have averaged about 180,000 per month. But much that gain reflects a decline in layoffs, rather than more overall hiring. Despite April’s increases, overall hiring and quits are still below pre-recession figures.Total hiring topped 5 million in most months before the recession began in December 2007. That’s 14 percent higher than April’s level. Monthly quits were typically around 2.8 million before the recession. That’s 24 percent higher than April. The job market remains very competitive for those looking for work. There were 3.1 unemployed workers, on average, for each open job in April. In a healthy economy, the ratio is 2 to 1. Orbital Selected By NASA For $50 Million Contract To Build Icon Space Weather Satellite Orbital Sciences Corporation, one of the world’s leading space technology companies, announced today that it has been selected by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to design, manufacture, integrate and test a new heliophysics science satellite that will investigate the connection between space weather storms in the ionosphere, located at the edge of outer space, and Earth’s terrestrial weather. Orbital will provide its LEOStar-2 spacecraft platform and conduct systems integration and test for the Ionospheric Connection Explorer (ICON) mission at its Dulles,VA satellite design and production facilities. Orbital’s contract for the two-year mission is valued at $50 million. The mission, which will be led by the University of California at Berkeley, is currently planned for launch in 2017. The mission of the ICON satellite is to study the interface between the upper reaches of the Earth’s atmosphere and outer space in response to a recent scientific discovery that the ionosphere, positioned at the edge of space where the Sun ionizes the air to create charged particles, is significantly influenced by storms in the lower atmosphere. The mission, chosen for its scientific value and low-risk development plan, will improve the forecasts of extreme space weather by probing the variability of Earth’s ionosphere with in-situ and remote-sensing instruments. Fluctuations in the ionosphere can disrupt satellite and radio communications from low- and geostationary-orbit communications spacecraft, creating a direct impact on the nation’s economy. The scientific findings resulting from the ICON mission could, for example, benefit commercial aircraft, as GPS signals can be distorted by chargedparticle storms in the ionosphere. ICON was awarded under NASA’s Explorer series of lower-cost and highly-productive space science satellites. Orbital has built multiple Explorer satellites for NASA, including the in-orbit NuSTAR, Swift, GALEX, AIM and IBEX spacecraft. In addition, Orbital was recently awarded a $75 million contract to design, build, integrate and test, as well as to perform mission operations, for another Explorer satellite, the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS). The ICON program is being led by Principal Investigator (PI) Dr. Thomas Immel of the University of California/Berkeley’s Space Sciences Laboratory (UCB/SSL) and mission management is performed by UCB/SSL under NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center Explorers program. The PI-led ICON mission features partners from the Naval Research Laboratory and the University of Texas/Dallas. Mission Operations will be performed by the UCB/SSL Mission Operations Center, which is currently operating the Orbital-built and launched NuSTAR astrophysics Small Explorer satellite. The ICON mission will rely on Orbital’s LEOStar-2 platform, a flexible, high-performance spacecraft for space and Earth science, remote sensing and other applications. The LEOStar-2 series of spacecraft have supported multiple missions for commercial and government customers over the past 15 years. The current LEOStar-2 product line has demonstrated an exceptional record for reliability, with four currently in orbit, another in production, and the TESS and ICON programs to be started later this year.

Manufacturing made up 39% of Oregon’s GDP last year more than any other state. About 15 years ago, manufacturing only accounted for about $9 billion, or 9%, of Oregon’s economy. By 2012, it had risen to $74 billion, or a whopping 39% of Oregon’s entire economic output -- the highest proportion of any state. Oregon isn’t large. By GDP, it ranks 25th in size among the 50 states. But its manufacturing sector has risen so rapidly that Oregon now ranks sixth in manufacturing output, surpassing even states like Indiana, Michigan and Pennsylvania. It has everything to do with computers and electronics, with Intel (INTC) leading the way, according to Josh Lehner, an economist for Oregon’s Office of Economic Analysis. The company is based in California, but has been expanding its chip manufacturing plants, as well as its research and development headquarters in Hillsboro, Oregon. Electronic integrated circuits, processors and controllers were Oregon’s largest export last year. Intel alone now operates six sprawling campuses west of Portland and employs roughly 17,000 people in the state, making it Oregon’s largest private employer.

to the application. The slide velocity is programmable through the stroke, optimizing the motion to suit the application and the process material, and deformation in formed parts. Blanked, drawn, coined and formed parts performance is much better. The edge appearance on blanked and sheared high strength steel parts is cleaner with fewer burrs. The dwell feature provides flexibility to pause the press in stroke for secondary operations such as in die tapping, insert assembly or timed to automation. The adjustable stroke feature allows them to more efficiently process difficult forms and exotic materials. Titanium, with its spring back characteristics can easily be formed with a less complicated tool using a swing mode feature. The servo drive also provides higher working energy at very low speeds and at any point in the stroke where needed for complex or difficult formed parts. Depth position and repeatable accuracy with the H1F is within 10 to 20 microns. This is a real benefit in scoring and other high accuracy applications. Pacific Metal Stampings developed a master die to contain their proprietary die components. These components are produced quickly and accurately on their CNC machining centers and wire EDM machines. They guarantee their customers’ tooling for life, including all maintenance at no charge. To further service their customers Pacific Metal Stampings utilizes some of the best machine tools in the industry and they now have machinery that can hold the closest of tolerances and forming operations that most companies cannot do.The latest addition to their in house tool and die shop is the Mitsubishi MD+PRO III Wire EDM. Pirates Seen Helping Boeing Boost Orders for Patrol Jets Boeing Co. expects governments combating pirates and drug runners on the open seas will create a new market for long-range patrol jets, boosting demand 50 percent higher than the U.S. military’s purchases. Foreign sales of the P-8, a military version of Boeing’s best-selling 737 single-aisle jet, are estimated at more than 60 over the next decade, said Egan Greenstein, business development director for the P-8 program. That would add to the U.S. Navy’s plans to purchase 117 of the planes. Boeing Co.’s defense unit is pushing for more sales abroad to make up for budget cuts that have curbed sales at home. Photographer: Andrew Harrer/Bloomberg Piracy “is part of a growing market trend,” Greenstein said in a presentation at Boeing’s Renton, Washington, factory. “We’re getting interest from countries that have never had fixed-wing maritime patrol.”

Boeing’s defense unit is pushing for more sales abroad to make up for budget cuts that have curbed sales at home. While a coordinated crackdown on pirates operating off the Somali coast has reduced attacks on ships, governments are more attuned to the risk and equipping themselves to deal with it, said Cyrus Mody, assistant director for the International Maritime Bureau, which has been monitoring piracy since 1992. “The threat is still present,” Mody said in a telephone interview from his London office today. “There are still pirate groups being reported on the water.” This year through May 23, 106 incidents of maritime piracy have been reported, according to the maritime bureau, which is part of the International Chamber of Commerce. Last year, 297 ships were attacked, down from 439 in 2011. Aerial Surveillance The best way to combat piracy is through aerial surveillance coupled with patrol ships, Mody said. Countries along the African coastline can’t rely solely on the navies of developed nations, he said. “At the end of the day, it would have to be the individual country or a region that comes together to protect its own waters,” Mody said. “As the capacity in the region increases, they will need to have these sorts of surveillance tools available to them.”

India has ordered eight of Boeing’s patrol planes, with the first delivered on May 15. Australia has signed an agreement to order the aircraft and may take from eight to 12, Greenstein said in last week’s presentation. International sales now make up 28 percent of revenue at Chicago-based Boeing’s defense unit, compared with 7 percent in 2004. Military Derivative The P-8 is the first military derivative of a commercial airplane that has its own designated production line, Greenstein said. In the past, Boeing’s defense unit took fully produced jets and modified them for military uses. The P-8 production system laid the groundwork for Boeing’s manufacture of the KC-46 tanker plane on the 767 commercial jet line. In September, the Navy awarded Boeing a $1.9 billion contract for 11 P-8 planes, valuing them at about $172 million each and bringing the total under contract to 24 aircraft. The U.S. Navy’s version of the plane is designed for anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare as well as surveillance.
Airbus A350 makes its maiden test flight Airbus has written another chapter in its 43 year history with the maiden flight of the A350 XWB, an aircraft that is made up of 52 per cent composite parts. The aircraft, powered by Rolls-Royce Trent XWB engines, took off from Toulouse this morning and marks the beginning of a test campaign totaling around 2,500 flight hours with a fleet of five development aircraft.
Along with pirates and smugglers, border disputes, terrorism and protection of fishing rights are also driving demand for the plane, especially on the African coasts and South China Sea, Greenstein said.
According to Airbus flight testing will lead to the certification of the A350-900 variant by the European EASA and US FAA airworthiness authorities, prior to entry into service in the second half of 2014 with Qatar Airways. click here
“It’s a growing market,” he said. “I have been surprised -- as I have been in this business for 10 years -- of the countries who I would have not have thought of having a requirement, that are embracing maritime patrol as something important.”
The aircraft is made from 52 per cent composites, 7 per cent steel, 14 per cent titanium, 20 per cent AL, AL-Li, 7 per cent miscellaneous materials and is expected to use 25 per cent less fuel compared with other aircraft of its size category.

The Science of Ceramics in Hip Joint Replacements Ceramic hip joint medical implants are helping many people around the world enjoy improved quality of life. While the material used in the implant will vary depending on factors such as the age of the patient, their activity level, and the preference of the surgeon performing the operation, it is ceramic material that has proved time and time again to offer the strongest, most hard-wearing, and versatile solution. Ceramic materials have been used for artificial joints since the 1970s, yet the need for smaller medical implants with more complicated structures has created exciting new oppor tunities for those manufacturing ceramic solutions for the medical market. As a result, detailed and complex ceramic components are becoming increasingly specified for a wide range of applications, including hip joints, feed-thrus, and implantable devices, as the technology continues to demonstrate a range of competitive advantages when compared with other material types. Ceramics are increasingly the material of choice in medical applications due to their biocompatibility and resistance to chemicals in the human body. Further, ceramic materials have been proven to offer vastly superior resistance to wear when compared to their metal and polyethylene (PE) counterparts. A2Z METALWORKER NW •
26 • June/July 2013
A key application for ceramic materials in the medical sector is hip joint replacement. The use of ceramics in hip arthoplasty began in France in 1970, when Professor Pierre Boutin pioneered the use of alumina implants. Further developments led to the introduction of ceramic actebular cups, which could be implanted in the pelvic bone to bear against a ball head that is attached to the femur by a prosthetic stem. Together, the ceramic actebular cup and ball head create what is known as a wear couple, where the two parts move against each other when a person is in motion. The modular design of the hip joint replacement can incorporate a number of different material combinations between the cup insert and the ball head, including metal-on-metal, metal-onPE, ceramic-on-PE, and ceramic-on-ceramic.While metal is still widely used in wear couples, recent reports have shown that potential health risks can be caused by tiny metal particles breaking away from the implants and leaking into the blood. This can cause significant discomfort, damage muscle and bone, and potentially lead to long-term disability. Metal and polyethylene wear couple combinations can be problematic, as wear on the implant can generate PE particulate debris, which can lead to osteolysis—a condition where bone is eroded faster than it can be repaired. This, in turn, weakens the bone surrounding the implant and can cause the part to become loose, requiring a surgical procedure to remedy the situation. Ultimately, wear couples that use ceramic for both parts have proven to offer the most effective solution, due to the wear resistance characteristics of modern ceramic materials, and will improve the patient’s quality of life as a result. These issues were illustrated in a 2012 study, where researchers from the University of Bristol analyzed information from more than 400,000 hip replacements recorded in the National Joint Registry of England and Wales.1 It showed that, overall, 6.2% of metal-on-metal hip replacements had failed within five years. Larger implants were also linked to an increased risk in patients with metal-on-metal implants, with the researchers finding that each 1.0-mm increase in size represented a 2% increase in the possibility of the patient requiring corrective surgery, as a result of the joint becoming loose, dislocating, or wearing. Conversely, ceramic implants actually performed better as the size of the component increased. Typically, ceramic components can be expected to last for more than 20 years, with some ceramic components boasting a wear rate of just 0.032 mm per three million cycles. Consequently, there is almost no chance of inflammation or bone loss, while the biocompatibility of ceramic materials means they do not trigger any kind of chemical reaction when inserted into the body. This is due to the material’s strong chemical bonding and high purity composition. Advances in ceramic technology are continuing to have significant influence on the types of components used in medical applications. The latest generation of ceramic materials offers improved strength and more versatile size options. For example, diamond-like carbon coating is being utilized in applications to offer an extremely strong, low-friction wear surface that outperforms alternatives currently available on the market in terms of longevity and wear resistance.

Delcam Adds Probing Capabilities To FeatureCAM
Probing sequences can now be included within CAM programs from FeatureCAM “Probing has helped with our inprocess inspection for production. This product really shines when work-stops get in the way of cutting the part. We send the probe in to find where the part is before it starts cutting. For castings, we don’t have to be concerned with irregularities -- we just send the probe in to find the closest/best fit and start cutting. It was easy enough to set up, and I quickly understood the probing routines. FeatureCAM probing is A2Z METALWORKER • A2Z METALWORKER NW •

an outstanding tool and we are very happy with the product.” Matt Nelson, Visual Machining; Early adopter of FeatureCAM’s Probing Capabilities Delcam has added new probing capabilities in the 2013 version of its FeatureCAM software, feature-based CAM software for milling machines, turning, turn/mill centers, and wire EDM. The unique ability to incorporate probing sequences into the CAM program allows for automated checks to be carried out before, during and after machining. Performing automated checks will help save time and money by determining unexpected errors www.facebook.com/a2zmetalworker
before final inspection. Fewer errors will result in better machining times and more reliable production cycles giving companies the ability to produce their parts quicker. As production increases companies can take on more contracts and even accept larger runs expanding their business and becoming more profitable. Probing paths can be generated for five feature types: pockets, obstructed pockets and webs; inside or outside corners; bosses, bores and obstructed bores; radial bosses, bores and obstructed bores; and single surfaces. All of the resulting probing paths can be simulated and collision checked on the computer in the same way as cutting paths.
The new probing options can be used in a variety of ways. Before machining, sequences can be created to check that the expected part and fixture have been loaded, and that they have been placed in the correct orientation. The position of the part can be confirmed and fixture offsets introduced if required to compensate for any errors. In a similar way, the amount of excess material can be detected on near-net shapes, such as forgings or castings. Offsets can then be introduced to give a more even distribution of the material that has to be removed, so improving machining efficiency. Additional probing routines can be introduced at any stage during manufacturing. For example, as a cutting tool we a r s , i t could be leaving too much material on the job. This trend could be monitored by regular probing of the parts being produced and a tool change introduced automatically as the material being left came close to the target tolerance. Alternatively, the tool offset could be adjusted to compensate for the reduced size of the cutter. Similarly, critical features could be inspected immediately after they had been created to check whether too much material had been removed. If the parts were found to be outside tolerance, they could be scrapped immediately, rather than carrying on with machining and waiting for the results of an inspection at the end of the complete process. For example, if a crucial bore within the part had to be made to a particularly accurate tolerance, this could be machined and checked first, before continuing with the other, less critical, operations. Probing routines can also be added for checking at the end of the process. While independent inspection on a separate measuring device would still be needed, the initial check on the machine would highlight any parts well outside the required tolerance so eliminating wasted inspection time. In some cases, it might be possible for the independent inspection be undertaken on intermittent parts to confirm the results from the probing on the machine, rather than on every part, again saving inspection time. www.facebook.com/a2zmetalworker
More FeatureCAM 2013 Enhancements: • Step Remachining - it minimizes terracing for Clevel roughing tool paths with large step downs. You can use the same tool for the whole operation and increase speed rates for faster machining. • Unsafe Area Removal - C level roughing and finishing now benefit from new unsafe area removal technologies that remove small tool path segments to prevent tool damage when using non center cutting tools. • 5-axis Toolpath Strategies - on the 5 axis side, new strategies for pencil milling, cornering machining and machining between two curves have been added. • Smoothing Distance Parameter - for collision avoidance you get a smooth transition on the machine tool when collision avoidance takes place. • Tool Access Stabilization - controls the azimuth and elevation angles separately from one another so you can split the 5 axis tool path into 3+2 for a better surface finish. • B-axis Rotary Milling - for turn mill FeatureCAM now offers B-axis rotary milling, this gives you the ability to machine rotary surfaces on the V axis without needing to use 5 axis. • Combined Part Transfers - this feature has been fully integrated into FeatureCAM 2013, making the production of parts such as those in the oil and gas industry even easier to handle. Senate panel members also trimmed $1.8 billion from the department and service accounts to finance training and readiness shortfalls in the military, Levin told reporters on Capitol Hill on Thursday. The funding levels approved by the committee is $13 billion less than the $638 billion defense bill members on the House Armed Services Committee agreed to last Thursday. However, the Senate panel’s FY ‘14 topline figure for Pentagon spending did match the White House’s request, sent to Congress earlier this year. Aside from spending levels, the Senate committee adopted more than 100 amendments as part of the panel’s wide-ranging budget plan for the Pentagon. One of the amendments effectively blocked any DOD efforts to shutter military bases on U.S. soil under by the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) commission, according to Levin. Lawmakers plan to lift that ban once the Pentagon completes an assessment of all its overseas bases, to see which ones can be closed, before any domestic based are razed by BRAC.
Senate committee sets Pentagon budget at $625 billion The Senate Armed Services Committee approved a $625 billion spending package for the Department of Defense (DOD) last month, clearing the way for a vote by the full Senate on the budget bill for fiscal 2014.
But the issue that attracted the most attention this year was the rise of military sexual assault, which prompted the Armed Services panel to hold a rare open session for the full committee. During the meeting, the panel stripped out a measure in the bill from Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) that would have removed the decision to prosecute major criminal cases, including sexual assault, from the chain of command.
Committee members passed their version of the DOD budget blueprint, which finances the department’s annual operations and the war in Afghanistan, by a vote of 23 to 3, according to panel Chairman Carl Levin (D-Mich.). A2Z METALWORKER NW •

In its place, the committee established a new, automatic review process where general and flag officers would review cases in which a commander disagrees with the military prosecutor on whether a sexual assault case should be prosecuted. The alternative came from Levin, who opposed Gillibrand’s proposal. It passed the committee 17-9.
www.facebook.com/a2zmetalworker
The bill also included provisions that would prevent military commanders from overturning guilty verdicts during a post-trial review. In the end, committee members adopted the “the strongest and most effective approach” to tackling sexual abuse in the military, Levin said Thursday. Committee members also approved language to allow the Obama administration “greater flexibility” to transfer terror detainees being housed at the military prison in Guantánamo Bay, Cuba. The mandates included in the Senate panel’s version of the DOD spending bill will allow those detainees to be either transferred back to their home countries or moved into the United States to stand trial. In May, President Obama demanded lawmakers take action and shutter the controversial U.S. military prison. While the language did make it into the committee markup, ranking member Sen. James Inhofe (R-Okla.) said the effort will face stiff opposition when the defense spending bill comes to the Senate floor. The prison at Guantánamo Bay, according to Inhofe, “is a great asset, a great resource that we need to use to its fullest.” That said, Inhofe and Sen. Kelly Ayotte (RN.H.) are already preparing amendments to remove that transfer authority, the Oklahoma Republican added during the same briefing. As debate over the future of Guantánamo heats up, Inhofe was certain opponents to the prison’s closure will have the political support necessary to keep the facility open. “There are more allies in the Senate than we had before” Obama renewed his promise to close Guantánamo back in May, Inhofe noted. Republicans are also planning to dig in on the need for an East Coast missile shield www.facebook.com/a2zmetalworker
when the defense bill reaches the Senate floor. Defense committee members struck down language calling for the new missile shield on Thursday, funding instead a series of anti-missile radar systems to be deployed on the Eastern Seaboard. The radar systems will be “less expensive and significantly more effective” in protecting U.S. borders from a ballistic missile attack, Levin said. In response, Inhofe said the radars were a good first step, but that they still would not provide the early strike capability against a possible attack that a full-up missile shield would provide. Murfreesboro-Franklin, Tenn. (No. 6); Ft. Worth, Texas (No. 9); and Salt Lake City, Utah (No. 10). Our rankings factor in manufacturing employment growth over the long-term (2001-12), mid-term (2007-12) and the last two years, as well as momentum. They identify those places where the market tells us the best storylines for manufacturing are being written. What is striking about this revival is both its sectoral and geographic diversity. For Houston, the booming energy industry is driving job growth in metal fabrication, machinery and chemicals. Since 2009, Houston industrial employment has grown 15%, almost three times as fast as the overall economy. Of course, industrial growth also tends to create jobs in other sectors, notably construction and professional and business services. Much the same pattern of energy-driven growth can be seen in Oklahoma City, where the number of industrial jobs is also up 15% since 2009. This dynamic is also occurring in smaller metro areas. Energy cities did particularly well on our ranking of mid-sized metro areas (those with between 150,000 and 450,000 jobs overall), including third-place Lafayette, La.; Tulsa, Okla (fifth); Anchorage (sixth); Baton Rouge, La. (eighth); Bakersfield-Delano, Calif. (No. 13); and Beaumont-Port Arthur, Texas (No. 14).

America’s New Manufacturing Boomtowns Conventional wisdom for a generation has been that manufacturing in America is dying. Yet over the past five years, the country has experienced something of an industrial renaissance. We may be far from replacing the 3 million industrial jobs lost in the recession, but the economy has added over 330,000 industrial jobs since 2010, with output growing at the fastest pace since the 1990s. Looking across the country, it is clear that industrial expansion has been a key element in boosting some of our most successful local economies. The large metro areas with the most momentum in expanding their manufacturing sectors also rank highly on our list of the cities that are generating the most jobs overall, including Houston-SugarlandBaytown, Texas, which places first on our list of the big metro areas that are creating the most manufacturing jobs; Seattle-Bellevue-Everett, Wash. (third); Oklahoma City, Okla. (fourth), Nashville-DavidsonA2Z METALWORKER NW •

On our small cities list (under 150,000 jobs), two energy cities stand out, No. 4 Odessa and No. 7 Midland.
The other big story in manufacturing has been the recovery of the auto industry. Essentially we see two parallel expansions, one based around the revival of U.S. automakers and their suppliers, particularly around the Great Lakes, and another that’s keyed by foreign-based firms, particularly in the Mid-South and Southeast. Among the larger metro areas, the star of the U.S.-led recovery is No. 5 Warren-Troy-Farmington Hills, Mich., an area that is widely known as “automation alley.” This region epitomizes the transition of manufacturing to more automated, high-tech production methods. After decades of losses, the area’s industrial employment increased 26% from 2009 through 2012. More hopeful still has been the industrial recovery of the quintessential factory region, Detroit-Livonia-Dearborn, No. 8 on our large metro area list. The Detroit resurgence is for real, with manufacturing

employment up 18% since 2009. The industrial expansion has also sparked high-tech employment growth across Michigan that in 20102011 stood at almost 7% compared to 2.6% nationwide.
Ala., No. 3 on our small city list, industrial employment growth has been paced by the expansion of Navistar, as well as a host of smaller specialized manufacturers.
Another big winner from the auto rebound has been Louisville-Jefferson County, Ky., No. 2 on our large cities list. Industrial employment in the area has expanded nearly 15% since 2009. Smaller cities in the region have also staged an impressive recovery. Columbus, Ind., No. 1 on our small city list, is benefiting from the growth of auto suppliers such as PMG Group as well as the expansion of a nearby Honda facility.
The West is often identified as a key high-tech and lifestyle mecca, but it also includes some of the nation’s top industrial growth centers. At the top of the pile sits No. 3 Seattle-Bellevue-Everett, home to Microsoft MSFT +0.42%, Amazon and Starbucks SBUX +0.38%, but also the birthplace of Boeing BA +0.41% and its primary manufacturing location. Although the aerospace giant has moved some production elsewhere, Seattle has enjoyed nearly 13% growth in manufacturing employment since 2009.
Many “progressive” intellectuals love to hate the South. The region, industrializing rapidly for decades, took a big hit when the recession devastated the manufacturing sector everywhere. But more recently many Southern areas have enjoyed considerable growth in a host of industries, from petrochemicals and autos to aerospace. This can be seen in two of the South’s largest metropolitan regions, Nashville, Tenn. (No. 6 on our list), and Virginia Beach, Va. (No. 7 ). In Nashville, much of the manufacturing job growth is autorelated, sparked in large part by the expansion of smaller plants and the nearby Nissan facilities. In contrast, Virginia Beach’s manufacturing job growth has been very diverse, reaching into fields as broad as fabricated metals and autos. Expanding investment from abroad, notably in aerospace and autos, has paced growth in other southern cities, notably Mobile, Ala., No. 1 in the mid-sized category, which has become a major production hub for Europe-based Airbus. Similarly, in Florence-Muscle Shoals, www.facebook.com/a2zmetalworker
But the Emerald City is not the only western hotspot for manufacturing growth. Aided by low hydro-electric energy prices — as much as a third less than historic rival California –Washington State boasts several thriving industrial areas. Kennewick-Pasco-Richland earned the No. 2 spot in our small city rankings while Wenatchee comes in at No. 11. Low energy prices helps attract firms in diverse industries ranging from metals to food processing. The other western manufacturing hotspot is Utah, which also has low energy prices and a favorable business climate. Salt Lake City, which is becoming a perennial on many of our lists, has enjoyed a rapid expansion of technology-driven manufacturing, most notably a huge Intel-Micron flash memory plant, aerospace and recreation sports equipment industries. Also in the Beehive State, Ogden-Clearfield ranks No. 8 on our mid-sized list. A2Z METALWORKER NW •

how the world’s largest planemaker views the global commercial-jet market. The Paris Air Show, which begins June 17, is the industry’s biggest forum for new-model introductions. This year’s expo probably will net about $60 billion in orders, Peter Arment, a Birmingham, Alabama-based analyst with Sterne, Agee & Leach Inc., wrote in a research note today. That compares with $70 billion in orders at the 2012 event in Farnborough, England, and $110 billion at the last show in Paris, in 2011, he wrote. No aircraft at next week’s event will provide the same sales jolt as Boeing’s 737 Max did in 2012 and Airbus’s A320neo generated in 2011, Arment said in a phone interview. Boeing’s order estimate is more important than the projected gain in value -- up 8.3 percent from last year’s estimate -- because that tally is based on list prices typically subject to discounts. While new entrants such as Bombardier Inc. CS eries and Commercial Aircraft Corp. of China’s C919 will change the Boeing-Airbus SAS duopoly in the coming decades, the incumbents will retain their hold on narrow-body sales in the next several years as the newcomers seek to establish themselves, said Howard Rubel, a NewYork-based analyst at Jefferies LLC.
Boeing Raises 20-Year Jet Demand Forecast by 3.8% Boeing Co. raised its 20-year forecast for commercial jet demand by 3.8 percent as air traffic outstrips global economic growth and airlines refresh their fleets with $4.8 trillion in new planes.
Deliveries of single-aisle planes will be 24,670 over the next two decades, 6.2 percent more than in last year’s outlook, Boeing said today. Twin-aisle deliveries will be 7,830, 1.5 percent fewer than last year’s forecast. The largest planes, four-engine jumbo jets, continue to fall from favor, with the estimate of the two-decade total cut by 3.8 percent to 760. Jumbo Jets
Airliner sales will total 35,280 new jets during the next two decades, compared with a 2012 projection of 34,000 planes, Boeing said today in Paris before next week’s Paris Air Show. Almost all the gain will come from purchases of the single-aisle models that are the workhorses of carriers’ fleets, Boeing said.
Boeing already has felt the crimp in demand for jumbo jets, which it defines as planes carrying more than 400 people. The company said in April it would trim annual production of its 747-8 model to 21 planes from 24.
Boeing is betting on the durability of that expansion as it considers boosting output beyond the record pace already set for narrow- and wide-body planes. There’s no sign of a bubble, Randy Tinseth, marketing vice president for commercial airplanes at Chicago-based Boeing, said in a briefing ahead of the forecast.
Order backlogs running at double the normal wait time are pushing Boeing toward further production increases. The company predicts that 787 Dreamliner output will double to 10 a month by the end of this year, and the single-aisle 737 will rise to 42 a month in 2014, 33 percent faster than in 2009.
“Passenger traffic has been very resilient,” Tinseth said. “Every indicator that we see in the market says that demand is real and there’s a need to increase production.” Sales may trail Boeing’s expectations if airlines and lessors lose access to cheap financing and oil prices rise or fall dramatically, two of the drivers behind jet orders in the past decade, said Richard Aboulafia, an aerospace analyst at Teal Group, a Fairfax,Virginia-based consulting firm. Boeing’s 20-year forecast is presented annually and gives a snapshot of A2Z METALWORKER NW •

The world’s airliner fleet will more than double in two decades to 41,000 planes, including about 6,000 older jets that are kept in service, Tinseth said. More planes are needed to carry an estimated 9 billion passengers annually at the end of the 20-year period, up from 4 billion in 2012. Boeing predicts that over the 20-year period annual average growth for both passenger and cargo traffic will be 5 percent, based on the number of airline passengers expanding 4.1 percent and the global economy at 3.2 percent.

Creating Better Jobs For Manufacturing’s Comeback Ray Attiyah, Founder and Chief Innovation Officer, Definity Partners Scan through the business section of the news, and you’re likely to see stories about the resurgence of U.S. manufacturing, about how companies are moving jobs back to the United States because of the rising cost of manufacturing in (and shipping to and from) China. Certainly good news for American manufacturers, but I would argue that this trend is not what the resurgence of U.S. manufacturing should be built on. A favorite saying of mine is that we hire people not just for their hands, but also for their hearts and minds. When we hire frontline employees, it should not be just for the work they do on the line, but for the creative thoughts in their hearts and minds. This philosophy has pushed me to have a radical thought: What if we paid frontline manufacturing employees just $2 per hour for their labor but $14 per hour to use their minds to come up with better and faster ways of doing work, to think of new ways to use a product, to come up with brand new products and to solve problems that the company didn’t even know it had?

Accepting the Challenge In the world of competitive gymnastics, an athlete’s score is calculated by multiplying the score for how well a routine is executed with the degree of difficulty of that particular routine. Simple routines executed perfectly may not score as highly as extremely complex routines executed extremely well. The degree of difficulty can quickly bolster a score, particularly when combined with perfect execution. In manufacturing, the degree of difficulty is innovation. This type of proactive improvement takes courage and capacity, and requires leaders to really understand their customers and markets. Effective leaders recognize the need to look ahead, even beyond their industry at times, to innovate and to offer customers bold promises. When your team accepts this challenge by increasing its ability to execute and innovate, think of what that will do to your competition, your customers and your organization! A2Z METALWORKER NW •

Jay Timmons, President and CEO of the National Association of Manufacturer s, said it best: “Manufacturers are ready to power the economy. With the right policies in place, we will transform a difficult and sluggish recovery into an economic resurgence. After all, manufacturing has the highest multiplier effect of any other sector of our economy. Investments in manufacturing multiply across the economy, creating jobs and growth in other sectors. Simply put, manufacturing makes America strong.”[1] According to a September 2012 survey by the Harvard Business School, manufacturing companies were the most active in undertaking programs and initiatives to boost U.S. competitiveness. The survey showed that 86 percent of manufacturers are engaged in internal training; 59 percent in regional initiatives; 40 percent in offering apprenticeships; 47 percent in community college or other external training partnerships; 54 percent in sourcing locally for supplies; and 45 percent in supplier mentoring. The survey also showed that manufacturers rank near the top in participation in collaborative research initiatives, with 63 percent involved in this activity.[2] O ve r c o m i n g the Challenge Our current economic challenges are one part of a cycle that Americans have experienced for decades. Newspapers in the 1930s wrote of “a worldwide economic crisis marked by widespread unemployment and near halts in industrial production and construction.”[3] In the 1980s, the American automotive industry was overtaken by Japan. Even the construction and housing market — an integral component of the economy and major generator of American jobs — has experienced unprecedented loss. During the latest recession, the amount that the housing and construction industry contributed to the GDP fell from 6.3 percent to 2.3 percent.[4] So what’s new isn’t the challenges we’re facing, but the rate at which we are facing them. If manufacturers — and America — are going to succeed, we must innovate even faster than we have before.

Alpha Precision, for over 25 years, their consistent high quality and attention to detail has made them the standard by which all others are measured.
In 1988 Don Conti and Shelly Conti leased a single bay commercial building and immediately became known for making the highest quality complex milled components in the West.
Dean continued, “My father was a mold maker and being from New Jersey I was around tools & manufacturing all my life. My Dad’s father graduated with an engineering degree in 1918, so you could say manufacturing runs in our family. Back in those days there weren’t many people going to college and graduating with an engineering degree. Grandpa worked for Otis elevator and patented some devices that were used on the elevators.” Dean is a journeyman machinist and in 2000 graduated with an MBA from the University of Washington. Don said, “Now that I have a business degree, when I screw up, I know why. The program was pretty expensive, but I feel the education has literally paid for itself over the past 13 years.”
Alpha Precision started with a small vertical CNC mill, a manual lathe, mill, a surface grinder, and a fervent desire to manufacture parts no one wanted to tackle.
As the leader of Alpha Precision, Dean considers himself a conservative businessman. Dean believes that to stay on top of your business you must keep a close eye on demand and not grow your business too big and too far ahead of the demand curve. Dean has 15 key employees now with 2 lead machinists and will be slowly adding more key employees and machines as the market demand dictates.
In the lean earlier days it was a former competitor who Dean went to and said, “Hey, if I go into business will you out source some of your milling to me? You know me and what I can do!” The company said yes, and they are still doing work for them today. Within 6 months of doing business Alpha Precision was up to 6 employees and a second CNC milling machine. After the first year of business Alpha grew to 10 employees with 3 CNC milling machines.
Dean said, “Right now things are great and we want to make sure there is viable reason to expand. We had every bay in this building and some bays in the other buildings next to us, and when 2008 came we kept to the main 20,000 sq. ft. area.”
In 1996 Dean realized the company needed to get into horizontal machining centers. The horizontal milling machines efficiencies were better and the travel was larger and that’s what Dean needed. After looking at many different machines Dean found that most of the big names did not have the capacity he was looking for, except for Mazak. The Mazak line did fit the bill in every aspect and Dean has never looked back.
Dean continued, “We feel really good about the size we are right now. We have automated machines with tombstone auto-loaders and with large tool magazines on each of our CNCs so that when we program a production job we can leave at night and in the morning they are ready for inspection. This is the only way to stay on the competitive edge! Start with a good tool and some creative dove tail fixturing, and then let the machine’s capability with tool changers, and software does the rest. Once a machine is tooled and programmed with the right tools in the magazine, the human labor and error factor are out of the equation. This helps you stay in business.”
In 2008 the business held on during the economic downturn and Alpha eked thru the hard times by tightening up and through the utilization of their lights out cells that their Mazak machine tools afforded. Alpha was able to take one part or 10,000 parts orders and they created a business model that serves companies that may not have big volume but they have just enough repetitive work to create tooling to set up the job and maintain a flow of parts fast. Alpha Precision trains their people from the ground floor up. Dean said, “we would rather have an employee with a good attitude and a great work ethic and train them to do things the way that have worked here at Alpha Precision. Our average tenure here is 10 years and I make sure our employees have the tools and the training they need to succeed. That’s how I succeeded and climbed the so-called ladder at my previous employer to become a part owner and eventually have my own business.” A2Z METALWORKER NW •

One other element or key factor that lends to the niche Alpha Precision maintains is that they only do milling, that’s it. The best, highest precision, intricate, milled components that no one else wants to do.They do not have a lathe in the shop. If they need lathe parts for an assembly they can outsource to many shops that are on their approved supplier list. Dean said, “A long time ago I looked at the business and determined that with limited space, limited resources, and a very competitive market we needed to be focused on what we were the very best at and that is
www.facebook.com/a2zmetalworker
milling. Our aerospace milling is second to none. This doesn’t happen by chance. We take the 3d drawing in solid works and verify its geometry, advise our customers of possible improvements for manufacturability. We often make a custom tombstone holding fixture with specific tooling to allow the parts to be machined the fastest way possible, while maintaining the components maximum integrity. This winning strategy is working for us.” If you asked Dean what he does, I doubt he would say he is a machinist, or even a business owner. Back in 1996 Dean would have said he was a motorcycle racer. Today, Dean might say, “I’m a mountaineer and I’ll be on Mt St. Helens this weekend.” He loves to sail, ride horses, and loves to ride his peddle bike every day to maintain his fitness regimen. Dean is an example to all and he keeps life very interesting! Dean said I would like to discontinue working 10 plus hour days so I can do more of the things I really like doing. Don’t get me wrong, I love my business but I want to run it, not have it run me. Everything is about through put and you have 24 hours in a day, so I obviously strive to get the most through the system in a 24-hour period of time. The cost of the building and the overhead are always about the same. The trick is to minimize the constraints along the pipeline and maximize the throughput to a manageable level and maintain that in a 24-hour window. Alpha Precision maintains 2 large Mazak milling cells (the FH5800 Mazak and the Nexus 6800-II Mazak horizontal machining centers) that have a 12-pallet changer, 240-tool magazine (Tool Hive) to perform their lights out operation. They are technology driven and a leader for automation in a shop of their size. Dean said, “ For a business our size you need to do what you can with equipment, systems, documentation, software, and modern technology to maximize the output of your labor dollars. We have done that with hardware, software, CMM, MRP, Etc.” The cost of manufacturing keeps going down constantly and that’s why the standard of living can go up because we can be more efficient. The relative cost of manufactured items is lower than it used to be. The bottom line is, if you want to stay in business you have to be productive.” This optimization of automation has been the key factor in Alpha Precision’s strategy to becoming locally and globally competitive and to minimize the labor www.facebook.com/a2zmetalworker
content of their operations. Alpha Precision has a base of many customers they started out with 25 years ago in Aerospace, DOD, Medical, and Communications Equipment. Dean said, “We work closely with our customers at the design stage of their products and we offer suggestions on how they can save money and make a part that is easily manufactured. We did this with one customer at the beginning of a wire harness project for aerospace and we helped the company bring product to market so fast that they beat out their competition and were selected as the main supplier. This of course was good for us as well. We made them a lot of components. ” Machine Toolworks Dean stated, “In 1996 we met Ian and Gary of Machine Toolworks, the Mazak Dealer. We were looking for a horizontal that was big enough to handle some large aerospace parts. They recommended the Mazak and showed me how perfect it was for my applications. It turns out that it not only is the perfect machine for our type of work, it never goes down. Our Mazak cells allow us 99.7% up time. Some time ago we broke a spindle due to operator error and Machine Toolworks had us up and running in 8 days including the break in time for the new spindle. That was really quick considering it takes 3 days to break in a new spindle.” Dean continued, “They do what they say they will do and they are very honest! They are very low key and I like that. I do not like a high-pressure salesman. Gary and Ian make a concerted effort to find out what I need, and then they present it in a way that helps me see if it is good for my business. I don’t really think they would ever try to sell me something that doesn’t fit my business model.”

China, France Vow To Promote ‘Multipolar’ World China’s President Xi Jinping and France’s President Francois Hollande pledged to push for a world free of domination by any superpower Thursday as the French leader visited the Chinese capital on a mission to boost trade amid his country’s worsening economic woes. Both leaders stressed their desire for a “multipolar” world that would dilute Washington’s influence — though they did not mention the U.S. in their comments. “China and France are both great countries with a strong sense of independence,” Xi said at a news conference, adding that the two countries would “actively promote a multipolar world and the democratization of international relations.” “China and France both want a multipolar world. We want there to be a balance. We refuse a world of powers, and of superpowers,” Hollande said. “When China and France agree on a position, we can drive the world.” Officials from the two countries signed an agreement for China to buy 60 planes from France-based Airbus. In addition, French nuclear giant Areva signed an agreement with China National Nuclear Corp. to build a used fuel treatment and recycling facility in the country. www.facebook.com/a2zmetalworker
French businesses hit by domestic declines are hoping for additional deals in China in areas including car making, nuclear energy and food exports. France registered a $34 billion trade deficit with China last year and accounts for less than 2 percent of the Asian giant’s foreign trade. “There is an imbalance in our foreign trade, and we hope to correct that,” Hollande said. “Not by reducing our investment and exports, but by increasing them further, and we will be discussing this throughout our meetings and this trip.” At a second news conference later in the day, Hollande said his talks with Xi had touched on human rights and the recent string of self-immolations among Tibetans protesting Chinese rule. China is extremely sensitive to criticisms of its human rights record and uses diplomatic and economic means to retaliate against countries it sees as lacking in respect. China lashed out at France after Hollande’s predecessor, Nicolas Sarkozy, met with exiled Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama in 2008. Chinese officials have also shunned high-level exchanges with British counterparts since Prime Minister David Cameron met the Dalai Lama last May, and ties with Norway remain frozen following the awarding of the 2011 Nobel Peace Prize to imprisoned Chinese dissident writer Liu Xiaobo. Here’s to the Makers: Reinvigorating Entrepreneurial Manufacturing in America
Ethical, Bright, Congenial, Tr u e , a n d

If the Industrial Age belonged to the oil barons; the Post-War Era, to the baby boomers; and the past decade, to the Silicon Valley hackers– this Post-Great Recession era can belong to the manufacturer. That is, if we take hold and help America get back to its roots.

Appetite for American Made has never been greater. A resurgence of the original favorite, the American automobile, has put more than 170,000 Americans back to work since 2008. The country’s biggest retailer has pledged $50 billion to domestic sourcing over the next decade. And companies as diverse as apparel and personal computer makers have promised to return offshore manufacturing stateside. This week, at the third annual Clinton Global Initiative America meeting, I will join a panel of world-class leaders for a working group on manufacturing–specifically tackling how we can spur this manufacturing renaissance onward by tapping into the American spirit, creating long-lasting value through quality products and meaningful livelihoods for workers, and building the communities outside of a plant’s four walls.

I’ve seen the power of this new way of doing business at Chobani, where the focus is on crafting delicious, nutritious food with only natural ingredients and making it accessible to everyone. In just five years we have launched an American food trend, shaken up a long-stagnant category, challenged the conventional nutritional and pricing standards of the packaged goods industry, and surpassed $1 billion in sales.

At the center of the Chobani story is a dedication to manufacturing–80 percent of our workforce is on the factory floor. and all back-office workers make a visit to the plant in short order of starting. But all that we do is infused with an entrepreneurial spirit. It’s what fueled me and my first five employees to start what today is the No. 1 selling GreekYogurt brand in America. It’s what drove Maria Wilcox, then an hourly front office administrator, to oversee production scheduling for the two million cases a week that come out of our NewYork State plant. And it’s what inspired Cassie Treen three years ago to start a single-school food drive that has since grown to include more than 20 schools and counting, in the community near our plant. Let’s bring our focus back to rural towns. It is here where we have the most potential to revive our nation’s economy. I have seen it firsthand in Chenango County, where we started our first plant. I was met again with this same type of humility, hospitality and can-do spirit in Idaho’s Magic Valley, when we opened our second plant. So I challenge this country’s future entrepreneurs: redirect your entrepreneurial fervor. Make creating and crafting something new, something cool. Diversify praise for start-ups; the builders, crafters and creators deserve it. And think beyond big cities to bring life back to little towns and communities. Here’s to the makers of America. Here’s to the new way of doing business.

Zinc-air battery could be low-cost alternative to lithium-ion Stanford University scientists have developed an advanced zinc-air battery claimed to have higher catalytic activity and durability than similar batteries made with platinum and iridium catalysts. The results, published in Nature Communications, could lead to the development of a lowcost alternative to conventional lithium-ion batteries widely used today. ‘There have been increasing demands for highperformance, inexpensive and safe batteries for portable electronics, electric vehicles and other energy storage applications,’ said Hongjie Dai, a professor chemistry at Stanford and lead author of the study. ‘Metal-air batteries offer a possible low-cost solution.’ According to Dai, most attention has focused on lithium-ion batteries, despite their limited energy density, high cost and safety problems. ‘With ample supply of oxygen from the atmosphere, metal-air batteries have drastically higher theoretical energy density than either traditional aqueous batteries or lithium-ion batteries,’ he said in a statement. ‘Among them, zinc-air is technically and economically the most viable option.’ Zinc-air batteries combine atmospheric oxygen and zinc metal in a liquid alkaline electrolyte to generate electricity with a by-product of zinc oxide. When the process is reversed during recharging, oxygen and zinc metal are regenerated. ‘Zinc-air batteries are attractive because of the abundance and low cost of zinc metal, as well as the non-flammable nature of aqueous electrolytes, which make the batteries inherently safe to operate,’ Dai said. ‘Primary [non-rechargeable] zinc-air batteries have been commercialised for medical and telecommunication applications
with limited power density. However, it remains a grand challenge to develop electrically rechargeable batteries, with the stumbling blocks being the lack of efficient and robust air catalysts, as well as the limited cycle life of the zinc electrodes.’ Active and durable electrocatalysts on the air electrode are required to catalyse the oxygen-reduction reaction during discharge and the oxygen-evolution reaction during recharge. In zinc-air batteries, both catalytic reactions are sluggish, Dai said. This is a rechargeable zinc-oxide battery in a tri-electrode configuration with cobalt-oxide/ carbon nanotube and iron-nickel/layered double hydroxide catalysts for charge and discharge, respectively This is a rechargeable zinc-oxide battery in a tri-electrode configuration with cobalt-oxide/carbon nanotube and iron-nickel/layered double hydroxide catalysts for charge and discharge, respectively Recently, his group has developed a number of high-performance electrocatalysts made with non-precious metal oxide or nanocrystals hybridised with carbon nanotubes. These catalysts produced higher catalytic activity and durability in alkaline electrolytes than catalysts made with platinum and other precious metals. ‘We found that similar catalysts greatly boosted the performance of zinc-air batteries,’ Dai said. both primary and rechargeable. ‘A combination of a cobalt-oxide hybrid air catalyst for oxygen reduction and a nickel-iron hydroxide hybrid air catalyst for oxygen evolution resulted in a record high-energy efficiency for a zinc-air battery, with a high specific energy density more than twice that of lithium-ion technology.’ The battery is also said to have demonstrated good reversibility and stability over long charge and discharge cycles over several weeks.
