We make it out of the storm and we survive and we are stronger because of what we went through and we are smarter than when we started this voyage.This economic environment is very similar to this analogy. We are all doing very different things than we did before because it is a time for change. This change is not brought to us but comes from us and from the duress we experience. We overcome, we adapt, and we all find faster and better ways to do things. In the old days there was Atari, Pan Am and Woolworth’s -- all once industry leaders that crashed against the rocks of strategy, innovation and competition. The business climate changes so fast today and is so globally competitive we must keep an open mind and search for innovative ways to compete. But first and foremost we must press on. We must do things differently than we did them 20 years ago and we must insist that our governing system back us all the way. I had the opportunity to interview a great man and a business leader in the manufacturing industry here in the Pacific Northwest, Bill Fahey. He made it clear to me that some of the over governing practices that are currently in place have chocked our US manufacturing businesses and have resulted in outsourcing and off shoring our manufacturing industry. I believe the people of the US have spoken and have said enough. We must have a system that supports the way we do business and promotes the mechanism of business in the US to perpetuate prosperity and a strong economy. We are strong when we make things! A complete and separate hand forging operation has been running in the Santa Ana, CA facility with extreme efficiency since its inaugural production just over 2 years ago. This operation included a newly remanufactured open die 2500 Ton Hydraulic Press along with an 8000 ton sister press for cold work stress relief of open die hand forgings. OMAX® Cor poration Announces Major Headquarters Expansion OMAX Corporation designs, manufactures, markets and supports its advanced abrasive waterjet machines and accessories from its manufacturing facility and corporate headquarters in Kent, Washington. Now, the company is announcing the largest expansion of its campus since opening the Kent facility in 1999, adding a new 22,000-square-foot building that will extend OMAX’s training, research and development, and engineering efforts. The company has experienced significant growth over the past several years, making the expansion necessary. In fact, OMAX Corporation was recently named, for the second time, to Inc. Magazine’s 500|5000 list of the fastest-growing private companies in America for achieving 21 percent business growth between 2008 and 2011.
In the Oxnard, CA facility a new 3000 Ton Hydraulic press is under construction and scheduled to be running in the third quarter of 2012. A mate to the new Santa Ana automated high tech saw has also been purchased, installed and has been running since February of this year. Ongoing upgrades are being done with the rebuild of three of Oxnard’s 5 Mechanical Presses ranging in size of 1300 Ton to 4000 Ton capacities. These improvements will enable APP to increase its efficiency in Aluminum Hand Forging production and hold down costs to our customers. APP has a long history and expertise in “closed die near net forgings” in both of the noted facilities and can produce Precision and Conventional Aluminum and Titanium die forgings of up to 600 square inches (Aluminum) and 200 square inches (Titanium) in Plan View Area. Boeing Co said it doubled deliveries of its fuel-efficient 787 jets in the third quarter to 12, compared with six in the second quarter Boeing is years behind its initial delivery schedule on the new light-weight, carboncomposite 787 aircraft after extensive development delays. The company declined to say how many of the 787s delivered in the quarter came from a group of previously produced jets that needed engineering changes after they left the factory. Boeing has produced more than 70 of its 787 jet and delivered 26, suggesting that 45 or more jets require the post-factory retrofitting, said Russell Solomon an analyst at Moody’s Investors Service in New York. “When you do the math, there are 50-ish sitting there with some level of work that needs to be completed,” he said. “We think most of those will get delivered next year. All of 787s delivered so far have been produced at Boeing’s plant in Everett, Wash.Boeing is trying to speed up production to five 787s per month by year-end.The rate will include jets made at its plant in South Carolina. That factory is expected to deliver its first 787 from South Carolina to Air India.
Overall, the company delivered 149 jets in the third quarter, down from 150 in the second, but up from 137 in the first quarter. Deliveries rose 17 percent from a year ago. Orders rose sharply in the latest quarter, hitting 404, compared with 36 in the second quarter. Orders for the new 737 MAX drove the increase, Boeing said.The company logged orders for 377 of the single-aisle 737 jets in the quarter, up from just three in the second quarter of 2012, and compared with 243 in the third quarter of 2011. Among the big buyers, United Airlines ordered 100 of the 737 MAX planes, and Air Lease Corp and GE Capital Aviation Services ordered 75 each. Virgin Australia Airlines ordered 23.

Manufacturer Helps Vets Turn Military Skills Into Jobs Advanced Technology Services, a company that maintains manufacturing plant equipment, has fashioned a unique way to fill their vacant jobs—specifically recruit and hire America’s returning veterans. Turns out soldiers trained in handling guns, radios and other kinds of equipment possess the ideal skills to work in America’s manufacturing plants. “They have all these great skills and manufacturing is a perfect place for them to transition into,” said Holly Mosack, director of military recruiting for Advanced Technology Services, based in Peoria, Ill. Whether U.S. manufacturing can thrive again is a perennial question. But recent economic data suggests sector improvement.The Institute for Supply Management (ISM) recently said the manufacturing sector expanded in September—shaking off three months of weakness as new orders and employment edged higher. Advanced Technology Services helps factories improve productivity and profitability.Their clients include Caterpillar, Honeywell, Eaton and Textron. Advanced Technology Services began focusing on military hiring in 2006. That emphasis was ramped up last year as more vets began returning home from conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. But transitioning from the battlefield to private-sector work is challenging, as jobs data shows. The unemployment rate for veterans—who served on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces at any time since September 2001—was 12.1 percent, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics said earlier this year.

U.S. Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney wants to immediately restore the Pentagon’s base budget to levels proposed by former Defense Secretary Robert Gates in 2012 before last year’s Budget Control Act slashed $259 billion from planned spending, according to campaign advisers. A Romney administration would allot 4 percent of the U.S. gross domestic product (GDP) to the defense base budget, said Roger Zakheim, one of the former Massachusetts governor’s senior defense advisers, at an Oct. 11 breakfast with reporters in Washington. Zakheim is on leave from his job as deputy staff director and general counsel of the House Armed Services Committee.

Gates’ fiscal 2012 Pentagon budget proposal called for $2.99 trillion in defense spending from 2013 to 2017. That projection was cut by $259 billion after Congress passed the Budget Control Act in 2011. Romney believes additional cuts mandated under the Budget Control Act, known as sequestration, also need to be reversed, his advisers said. The fiscal 2013 Pentagon budget proposal is 3.3 percent of GDP. Dov Zakheim — Roger Zakheim’s father and another senior Romney adviser who has served in numerous defense positions under Republican presidents, including Pentagon comptroller under President George W. Bush — acknowledged that Romney would not necessarily be able to achieve the 4 percent GDP level of spending in his first term as president.
“We’re not going to come in with this massive supplemental” spending measure, he said. Specific defense budget numbers would rely on GDP levels. So if the GDP grows quickly, the defense budget would grow faster. If it does not grow as fast, the Defense Department budget would be smaller. The defense budget needs at least 2 percent real growth each year or procurement and research and development historically is cut, Roger Zakheim said. As for policy, Romney believes the Pentagon should be focused on the Asia-Pacific, Roger Zakheim said. That said, the campaign believes the Obama administration’s strategy to focus heavily on the Pacific and Middle East is not achievable due to a planned truncation in force structure. had our niche. The bigger companies sold everything under the sun and did not specialize in a line of products.” Bill Sr. continued. Fahey Machinery’s claim to fame was pounding the pavement. “Our customers knew who they were dealing with; we would shake their hand and look them in the eye. They knew we were not an order taker type of business. We were, and still are, their expert in fabrication equipment,” Bill Sr. said. In the late 1960’s Boeing was not in great shape with the SST program and in 1971 the House of Representatives voted to end SST funding. Due to this project cancellation Boeing placed a glut of new/used machinery on the market. It was a difficult time to sell machinery in the Seattle area. In 1974 Bill Sr. moved up to Seattle to try and grow the territory. By then, Boeing was going straight up, the Alaskan pipeline was being built and high tech was just coming into play, and the timing was impeccable. Everyone else was selling
with the state of the economy and the government moving away from supporting US manufacturing and thus shrinking the middle class. Some of the consequences of over regulating by the government (OSHA & EPA) have made it so difficult for manufacturing to do business in the US that companies have either gone out of business or outsourced and offshored their work. This over regulation has resulted in less customers for us today. In the perfect world I see manufacturing growing again in the United States. We see some business coming back from Asia and that is encouraging. Businesses are finding out that it doesn’t make sense anymore to do business there with rising costs in fuel and labor and the decline of quality. When manufacturing comes back and we have higher paying jobs the economy will rise again and I see a good future on the horizon.”

Manufactured exports—a bright spot of the U.S. economy in recent years—are set to surge. Combined with jobs created as a result of reshoring, higher U.S. exports could add 2.5 million to 5 million jobs by the end of the decade, as manufacturers shift production from leading European countries and Japan to take advantage of substantially lower costs in the U.S., according to new research by The Boston Consulting Group (BCG). BCG projects that by around 2015, the U.S. will have an export cost advantage of 5 to 25 percent over Germany, Italy, France, the U.K., and Japan in a range of industries. Among the biggest drivers of this advantage will be the costs of labor, natural gas, and electricity. As a result, the U.S. could capture 2 to 4 percent of exports from the four European countries and 3 to 7 percent from Japan by the end of the current decade. This would translate into as much as $90 billion in additional U.S. exports per year, according to BCG’s analysis. When the increase in U.S. exports to the rest of the world is included, annual gains could reach $130 billion. BCG forecasts that the biggest U.S. export gains will be in machinery, transportation equipment, electrical equipment and appliances, and chemicals. “The export manufacturing sector has been the unsung hero of the U.S. economy for the past few years. But this is only the beginning,” said Harold L. Sirkin, a BCG senior partner and coauthor of the research. “The U.S. is becoming one of the lowest-cost producers of the developed world, and companies in Europe and Japan are taking notice.” The analysis is part of BCG’s ongoing “Made in America, Again” series on the changing global economics that are starting to favor manufacturing in the U.S. Previous reports in this series have focused on production and jobs that are likely to be brought back to the U.S. as China’s once-formidable cost advantage erodes, but the new research delves more deeply into the competitive position of the U.S. relative to other developed economies. Together, the developed economies account for about 60 percent of global manufactured exports. The new analysis raises BCG’s previous estimate of U.S. job gains. Earlier this year, a BCG report titled U.S. Manufacturing Nears the Tipping Point: Which Industries, Why, and How Much? predicted that the U.S. would gain 2 to 3 million jobs from higher exports and production work shifting from China to the U.S.

Although the reshoring trend—also referred to as “insourcing” and “onshoring”—is still in its early stages, several large foreign manufacturers have already announced plans to use the U.S. as an export base for other markets. Toyota, for example, has announced that it will export Camry sedans assembled in Kentucky and Sienna minivans made in Indiana to South Korea, while Honda and Nissan both say that they expect to boost exports of vehicles made in their U.S. plants to the rest of the world. Siemens is building gas turbines in North Carolina to ship to Saudi Arabia
for construction of a 4-gigawatt power plant. Rolls-Royce recently opened a new aircraft engine parts manufacturing facility inVirginia citing lower labor costs, productivity and dollarization (doing business in U.S. dollars to mitigate local currency risk). “Over the coming years, as European and Japanese companies decide where to locate new capacity, we can expect many more announcements like these,” said coauthor Michael Zinser, a BCG partner who leads the firm’s manufacturing work in the Americas. “Producing in the U.S. offers increasingly compelling cost advantages—to supply not only North America but also some of the most important overseas markets.” BCG estimates that average manufacturing costs in 2015 will be 8 percent lower in the U.S. than in the U.K., 15 percent lower than in both Germany and France, 21 percent lower than in Japan, and 23 percent lower than in Italy. Average manufacturing costs in China will still be 7 percent lower than those of the U.S. in 2015. But those costs do not include transportation, duties, and other expenses. And it is less than half of the advantage that China enjoyed a decade ago. As explained in a previous BCG report, when the many risks and hidden costs of managing extended global supply chains are taken into account, it will be just as economical to manufacture many products in the U.S. if those goods are sold in the U.S.

The administration announced that 10 public-private partnerships across America will receive $20 million in total awards to help revitalize American manufacturing and encourage companies to invest in the United States. The 10 partnerships were selected through the Advanced Manufacturing Jobs and Innovation Accelerator Challenge, which is a competitive multi-agency grant process announced in May 2012 to support initiatives that strengthen advanced manufacturing at the local level. These public-private partnerships consist of small and large businesses, colleges, nonprofits and other local stakeholders that “cluster” in a particular area.The funds will help the winning clusters support local efforts to spur job creation through a variety of projects, including initiatives that connect innovative small suppliers with large companies, link research with the startups that can commercialize new ideas, and train workers with skills that firms need to capitalize on business opportunities. The Advanced Manufacturing Jobs and Innovation Accelerator Challenge is a partnership among the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration and the National Institute of Standards and Technology, the U.S. Department of Energy, the U.S. Department of Labor’s Employment and Training Administration, the U.S. Small Business Administration and the National Science Foundation. In order to create an economy built to last, America needs to make more things the rest of the world wants to buy. While natural gas supplies are now abundant in North America, the clean energy source is not a good direct substitute for all petroleum products. Engines that use jet fuel and diesel fuel, for example, would need modification to use natural gas. Converting the natural gas to a ‘drop in’ fuel solves many problems. Creating feedstocks for lubricants, solvents, and waxes is also useful.
Enter GTL. Using a high-temperature reformer technique, natural gas can be converted to a synthesis gas which can then be turned into these consumer-ready products via Fischer-Tropsch (FT) chemical reactions. This gas-to-liquid process is not magic and the energy cost is high, but as long as the natural gas feedstock price is low enough it makes commercial sense. Against that background, Calumet Specialty Products Partners LP announced in a Sept 6 press release that it plans to expand its Karns City, PA specialty products facility to include a nominal 1000-barrelsper-day GTL plant. Calumet is a specialty petroleum products manufacturer, operating 135,000 bpd of refining capacity in the United States, and producing some 1500 different products. “Converting natural gas into ultra-high quality feedstock through GTL will reduce our costs, increase security of supply and improve product quality,” said Calumet’s Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Bill Grube in the press release.

Calumet has commissioned Ventech Engineers, LLC, specialists in modular petroleum processing plants, to design and deliver the GTL plant using an Autothermal Reformer (ATR) from Haldor Topsoe Inc and Fischer-Tropsch (FT) technology from Velocys Inc., according to Calumet. Haldor Topsoe’s ATR will reform the natural gas into synthesis gas, a mixture of largely hydrogen and carbon monoxide. In the GTL plant, this synthesis gas will be routed through the Velocys FT process for conversion into long chain hydrocarbons. Velocys is the US-based subsidiary of the UK-based Oxford Catalysts Group, according to Oxford. “Due to the historically large gap between high oil prices and low gas prices in North America, we’re experiencing very strong interest from potential clients keen to take advantage of this arbitrage opportunity. We are confident of the coming growth of GTL in North America and elsewhere, and of playing a leading role in this emerging market,” said Roy Lipski, CEO of Oxford in announcing its own involvement in the project. The plant design is expected to be completed by late 2012, followed by site specific engineering and a decision to commence fabrication in
the first half of 2013. The simplified driver traveling wave tube is required to support navy shipbuilding programs, in-service engineering agent requirements, foreign military sales and fleet replenishment requirements for the AN/SPY-1D(V) radar system which is part of the Aegis Weapon System MK 7. The AN/SPY-1D(V) radar is an air/surface search and tracking system used on DDG 51 class ships starting with DDG 91. The simplified driver traveling wave tube provides radio frequency (RF) amplification in the RF amplifier stage for input to the final power amplifier. Work will be performed in Palo Alto, Calif., and is expected to be completed by September 2017. Contract funds will not expire at the end of the current fiscal year. Backed by Google and other investors, the Atlantic Wind Connection is moving forward with the construction of a 380mile power line that would enable up to 7,000 megawatts of electricity to be produced at offshore wind farms from Virginia to New Jersey. The study’s economic projections are based on the development of 7,000 megawatts of wind power, or enough to power more than 2 million homes in the Mid-Atlantic region. Besides the 110,000 jobs created directly by the industry and the supply chain, the study estimates that 50,000 jobs would be created by the effect of added economic activity — restaurants and groceries, for instance. Large-scale wind development off the Atlantic coast would also have a combined economic impact for the states of $19 billion and increase local, state and federal government revenues by $4.6 billion, the study by information and analytics company IHS Inc. concluded.
Report Forecasts Jobs, Revenues In Offshore Winds The large-scale development of wind power off the Mid-Atlantic coast would create more than 70,000 jobs from New York to Virginia, an industry-sponsored study concludes. The study released last month said those jobs would be created by a new industrial base needed to manufacture, build, operate and maintain the towering wind turbines, and an additional 40,000 jobs would be needed to serve the supply chain. The job growth would be realized over a 10-year build out of the offshore industry. The study, of course, examines the potential for an industry that has little presence in the in the U.S. No commercial wind power is produced in waters off the U.S., although a project off Cape Cod, Mass., could begin producing electricity in 2014. In Virginia, the industry is just beginning to stir with eight energy producers expressing interest in developing ocean bottom 25 miles off Virginia Beach. The state is seeking to survey the ocean bottom and collect surface data to move the industry forward.

October 5th was the first national Manufacturing Day, reminding us that the United States still leads the world in production of manufactured goods, and that the manufacturing sector is at the core of our economy.
In this election year, candidates across the country, from President Obama and Governor Romney on down, have jumped onto the manufacturing bandwagon. Beacon Hill has cut the corporate excise tax, passed bills to control medical and energy costs, strengthened theWorkforceTraining Fund Program and the community colleges, and created the industry-led Massachusetts Advanced Manufacturing Collaborative. Nationally, however, the reality has been not bipartisan consensus but partisan deadlock. If Congress really cares about manufacturing, there are issues that demand immediate action. Most urgent is heading off about $500 billion in tax increases that will hit the U.S. economy on January 1, along with huge automatic spending cuts. The top tax rate on dividends will almost triple, the top tax rate on capital gains will increase by more than half, and many small and midsize manufacturers will see their top marginal tax rate rise, because nearly 70 percent of manufacturers file taxes at individual rates. The Research and Development tax credit expired for the 15th time at the end of 2011. And the U.S. corporate tax rate is the highest in the developed world. Action in other areas is equally vital, if less pressing; for example, the future of workforce development programs, largely shaped by federal policy, remains up in the air. America’s manufacturing sector, historically the backbone of our economy and of upward mobility in our society, is entering a period of renewed opportunity.We need congressional action, now, to ensure that future expansion takes place here rather that abroad.

And a gauge of employment rose, a sign that manufacturers may report a gain in jobs when September’s employment report is released recently. Manufacturers shed workers in August. The increase could signal that manufacturing is picking up after a weakening this spring because of declining consumer demand and a drop in exports.

US Manufacturing Grows for 1st Time in 4 Months U.S. manufacturing grew for the first time in four months, buoyed by a jump in new orders and more jobs. The increase is a hopeful sign that the economy may be improving after a weak stretch. The Institute for Supply Management, a trade group of purchasing managers, said last month that its index of factory activity rose to 51.5. That’s up from 49.6 in August. A reading above 50 signals growth and below indicates contraction. The index had been below that threshold from June through August. The improvement in the United States comes even as growth is slowing overseas. Europe’s financial crisis has pushed many countries in the region into recession. Growth in emerging nations such as China and India has slowed. China’s manufacturing sector shrank in September, according to a survey by a Chinese trade group. But its measure of factory activity rose for the first time in four months, to 49.8, from 49.2.
The U.S. economy grew at an annual rate of just 1.3 percent in the AprilJune quarter, down from a 2 percent growth rate in the January-March quarter. Most economists expect growth will stay near or below 2 percent for the rest of this year. Growth at that pace is typically too weak to lower the unemployment rate. Employers added 96,000 jobs in August, lower than July’s total and far below the average of 226,000 a month in the first three months of the year. The unemployment rate dropped to 8.1 percent from 8.3 percent in July. But that was only because fewer people were looking for work. The government only counts people as unemployed if they are actively searching for jobs.

OctoberBest-Regional High-Tech Conference & Expo: 2012 A Great Success Ten years ago, four members of the Electronic Representatives Association gathered to launch an idea that has grown into today’s OctoberBest Regional High-tech Conference & Expo. Their goal was to provide an open forum for companies involved in manufacturing, design, testing and development to network and learn about emerging trends from industry leaders. The idea was and still is to showcase local sourcing of goods and services in manufacturing.
The event continues to provide an arena where local manufacturers can learn new methods and technologies. It promotes the exchange of ideas and information that will help them to perform more efficiently and cost effectively. It provides a platform to introduce local resources and suppliers to the manufacturing community who offer a wide range of products and services. OctoberBest sponsors educational programs designed for learning, networking and personal growth. All of this is done with the goal of stimulating the Pacific Northwest economy. OctoberBest is an all volunteer organization bringing together professionals from around the tech community to help plan, organize and facilitate the event. The primary contributors are the Oregon Chapter of the Electronics Manufacturers Association (EMA) and the Pacific Northwest Electronic Representatives Association (ERA). The 2012 Event is being chaired by Ruth Delker of Cipher Systems. Boeing’s EcoDemonstrator Visits D.C. National Aerospace Week attendees got a glimpse of aviation’s future when Boeing, along with partner American Airlines, welcomed its innovative ecoDemonstrator 737-800 aircraft toWashington National Airport.Visitors to a special exhibit area were told about technologies and advanced materials used on and in the aircraft that provide greater fuel efficiency and further noise reduction than current aircraft. The ecoDemonstrator highlights potential efficiencies from all areas of the aircraft. Modifications include internal cabin improvements through the utilization of lighter-weight materials, new galley refrigeration technologies and the installation of recycled, recyclable modular carpet that will save operator time, cost and reduce waste. Active engine vibration controls and other improvements to the engines not only save fuel, but also reduce cabin and external noise. New high-tech devices in the cockpit have the potential to provide significant safety and efficiency improvements. These include up-to-date weather and other data streams delivered to an iPad-like device, allowing for more direct routing and a smoother, safer flight. New structural materials and designs such as adaptive trailing wing edges increase fuel efficiency. The regenerative hydrogen fuel cell on board essentially makes its own energy, bringing the aircraft one step closer towards zero emission power generation. Additionally, test flights of this aircraft are done using biofuels. All of the technologies tested by the aircraft have shown a two percent increase in fuel efficiency savings. American Airlines has allowed this aircraft to serve as a test bed for these advanced technologies. After testing on the ecoDemonstrator is complete, the airplane will be returned to standard configuration and delivered to the airline later this year. Boeing’s plan is to demonstrate similar technologies on one new aircraft type every year. The FAA participated in the 2012 program and will again offer assistance for the 2013 program, providing supportive funding for two of the technologies incorporated on the aircraft, and also some flight test cost. This funding is provided through the FAA’s Continuous Lower Energy Emissions and Noise program (CLEEN). In addition to Boeing, FAA and American Airlines, General Electric, Honeywell, Pratt & Whitney and Rolls-Royce-North America also assisted in the program.
