Autodesk, DMS and Design & Software International Partner To Bring You A Turn-Key Cost Effective Hybrid (Additive/Subtractive) Metal Machining Solution
In the United States, we have so much to be thankful for. And it is at this time of year, with such magnificent holidays as Thanksgiving, Christmas and Chanukah, when we particularly reflect on just how much we have.
Announcements/Releases .........................6-16 Feature Articles .......................................1,46-48 Buyers Guide Equipment .........................49-54 Buyers Guide Processes.............................55-61 Card Gallery................................................49-61 Index Of Advertisers .......................................62 Editorial..........................................Throughout
Our economy is, by all measures, strong. The gross domestic product indicator, which measures the nation’s production output, is expected to remain between the 2 percent to 3 percent ideal range. CNN Money recently reported on some key barometers that are worthy of mention. Our unemployment rate, at 4.3%, is at a 16-year low. It is encouraging to see ‘Help Wanted’ signs nearly everywhere you go - if one wants to work, and has a good work ethic, there are jobs to be found. Our willingness to borrow is indicative of our confidence in the economy. Americans had $3.843 trillion in loans outstanding in May, up from $3.766 trillion at the end of last year, according to the Fed. Consumers aren’t borrowing just to buy homes; they’re taking on debt for cars and using credit cards for lots of other things. And businesses are borrowing more, reversing a trend from earlier this year. Our trade deficit is improving, albeit slowly. The trade deficit fell slightly in June from three months ago, to $43.6 billion. That’s the lowest since just before the election. The S&P 500 (as of Thanksgiving day) is up more than 18% for the year, an outstanding performance. The Dow keeps hitting new records, and S&P 500 profits are up more than 10% from a year ago. All good news for both our investment accounts as well as our US based corporations. The state of U.S. manufacturing is one that is of particular interest to our readership, many of whom are involved in precision manufacturing. Despite its decline in past decades, A resource, The Balance states that US manufacturing is still the largest in the world. Here in America, we produce 18.2 percent of the world’s goods. That’s more than the entire economic output of Canada, Korea, or Mexico. And more positive projections - U.S. manufacturing is forecast to increase faster than the general economy. Production will grow 3 percent in 2017, and 2.8 percent in 2018. Manufacturing is so important to our US economy, not just in the number of jobs it creates (there are more than 12.3 million manufacturing jobs in our country), but additionally in its added value to the overall economy. Every dollar spent in manufacturing adds $1.48 in business growth in other supporting sectors. These include retailing, transportation, and business services. There is a heightened awareness among consumers that “Made in America” means jobs for Americans. In sum, we absolutely have so much to be thankful for. May your holidays be filled with happiness, health and kindness. And particularly during the holiday season when they are away from their loved ones, God bless our troops!

Toyoda Selects Foothills Machinery To Metalworking Index Hits Six-Year Re- CarryTheir Line InWyoming, Colorado, and New Mexico cord The Gardner Business Index for October 2017 reaches its highest point since 2011.
Registering 57.9 for October, the Gardner Business Index (GBI): Metalworking recorded its highest reading since 2011, raising the year-to-date average to 55.8 and reaching well above the average third-quarter reading of 55.3. The index is up approximately 15 percent and 18 percent for the year-to-date and 12-month periods, respectively. Gardner Intelligence’s review of the underlying data for the month indicates that new orders, production and supplier deliveries lifted the index higher, while employment, backlogs and exports pulled it lower. No components contracted in October, as even exports expanded for the first time this year. The GBI reading among only job shops also increased in the month, the third time in 2017 that it has surpassed the record high recorded in March 2012.More information about the Metalworking Index can be found at gardnerintelligence.com. Doosan Machine Tools announces the addition of the DMP 500/2SP to its line of vertical machining centers. Equipped with two spindles and two automatic-tool-change (ATC) systems, this new model was designed for production job shops and high volume parts manufacturers.
Compared to single-spindle machining centers, the DMP 500/2SP effectively doubles productivity by machining two parts simultaneously, as well as greatly reducing work loading, unloading and idle times. For reduced setup times, the right spindle features a W-axis adjustment of 20mm (0.8 in), allowing any variability in fixture heights between spindles to be quickly compensated for. Dual 24-tool capacity magazines are standard, and 30-tool and 40-tool magazines are optional. The dual ATCs boast 1.7 second tool-to-tool times, keeping the tools in the cut longer.
“Built to machine high volume parts with great efficiency, the DMP 500/2SP delivers extreme value with its high productivity, compact size and excellent reliability,” said Jim Shiner, Director of Sales and Marketing at Doosan Machine Tools America. “It can output the work of two machining centers in a smaller footprint with considerably less capital investment.” For more information on the DMP 500/2SP or any other Doosan machine tool, please visit www.doosanmachinetools.com. Machinist Publishes Book about 5-Axis CNC Technology The Power of FIVE: The Definitive Guide to 5-Axis Machining book was officially released this month at an industry conference, Top Shops, in Indianapolis. The author, Michael Cope, is a machinist and works at Hurco as a Product Technical Specialist.
Cope said he wrote the book because the adoption of 5-sided machining processes is the most efficient way for job shops to instantly increase productivity and profitability. While there are other books about 5-axis CNC technologies, he saw a need to write a book specifically for machinists. “I’ve always seen myself as a machinist first and wrote this book with the intention of educating A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

machinists and shop owners on the value of 5-axis machining because I truly believe it is the future of our industry and the most efficient way to produce parts. Making the transition to 5-sided machining on a 5-axis CNC machine solves many of the problems so many shops face: finding qualified machinists (the skills gap); excessive setup costs due to inefficiency; and reacting to pressure from customers, both pricing pressure and delivery pressure. To be blunt, 5-axis saves time and money. Since time is money in our industry, 5-axis makes each part more profitable. It offsets the skills gap issue because you can do more with fewer machines – which means you won’t need to find as many skilled employees. The technology makes the process more efficient, which means shops increase productivity because they don’t waste time flipping parts. Making the transition to 5-sided machining on a 5-axis CNC also helps job shops respond effectively to pressure from customers because they can switch from one job to another quickly and efficiently. Basically, you can do more with less if you select the right 5-axis CNC machine,” Cope said. The idea for the book was realized as Cope was preparing for a conference where he was asked to speak on behalf of Hurco about 5-axis CNC machines and control technologies. Maggie Smith, Marketing Manager at Hurco, said, “Hurco identified 5-axis as a critical initiative in 2006 because we realized it would help our customers be more profitable. We focused our attention on what we do best: building rigid and reliable CNC machines equipped with the most flexible control that supports both NC and conversational programming, and developing software features that are intuitive and easy to learn. Our software engineers made sure the conversational programming of the 5-axis control makes the transition to 5-sided machining easy. So easy, in fact, that no CAM system is required.”The book is available at Hurco.com/5-axis

20 Years Ago, Jeff Bezos Said This 1 Thing Separates People Who Achieve Lasting Success From Those Who Don’t Jeff Bezos founded Amazon in 1994.Twentythree years later, he’s one of the richest people in the world. But while Amazon is undeniably a tech company, the business was built on this old-school premise: Focus on the things that don’t change. The premise, while simple, is also easy to forget when innovation seems to be the secret of massive success. Catching the next wave, predicting the next trend, disrupting an industry, or hacking your way to near-immediate success, sparking change ... that’s what works. But it’s hard to be innovative. It’s hard to be truly disruptive. Shortcuts typically yield short-term benefits. Knowing what will change -- that’s incredibly difficult. Bezos doesn’t worry about what will change. He focuses on what won’t change. Bezos built Amazon around things he knew would be stable over time, investing heavily in ensuring that Amazon would provide those things -- and improve its delivery of those things. Here’s Bezos: I very frequently get the question: “What’s going to change in the next 10 years?” And that is a very interesting question; it’s a very common one. I almost never get the question: “What’s not going to change in the next 10 years?” And I submit to you that that second question is actually the more important of the two -- because you can build a business strategy around the things that are stable in time. ... [I]n our retail business, we know that customers want low prices, and I know that’s going to be true 10 years from now. They want fast delivery; they want vast selection. It’s impossible to imagine a future 10 years from now where a customer comes up and says, “Jeff, I love Amazon; I just wish the prices were a little higher.” “I love Amazon; I just wish you’d deliver a little more slowly.” Impossible. And so the effort we put into those things, spinning those things up, we know the energy we put into it today will still be paying off dividends for our customers 10 years from now. When you have something that you know is true, even over the long term, you can afford to put a lot of energy into it. Twenty years ago, Bezos said the same thing. In his 1997 shareholder letter, he wrote: We believe that a fundamental measure of our success will be the shareholder value we create over the long term ... Because of our emphasis on the long term, we may make decisions and weigh tradeoffs differently than some companies. Focusing on things that won’t change does not guarantee success A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain • RockyMtnSaw-Flyer.indd 1

Recycling Metals, Conserving Resources, Since 1961 U.S. Factory Orders Up 1.4 Percent In September Orders to U.S. factories rose 1.4 percent in September, the strongest gain in four months.A key category that tracks business investment plans jumped by the largest amount in more than a year.
The September gain followed a 1.2 percent advance in August, the Commerce Department reported Friday. Last month’s increase was paced by a 30.8 percent jump in demand for commercial aircraft, which swings widely from month to month. The category that serves as a proxy for business investment plans rose 1.7 percent in August, the best showing since a 2.7 percent surge in July 2016. Economists believe manufacturing is on a sustained rebound that will provide support for the overall economy after a prolonged stretch of weakness. Demand for durable goods, long-lasting items ranging from bicycles to battleships, rose 2 percent in September. That was a slightly smaller gain than the 2.2 percent estimate the government reported last week. Orders for nondurable goods, items not expected to last three years, rose 0.8 percent last month, up from a 0.4 percent increase in August. The gain was led by a rise in petroleum products, a category where the gain in orders likely reflected in large part a rise in energy prices during the month.
The overall economy grew at a 3 percent rate in the July-September quarter following a 3.1 percent GDP rise in the second quarter. It marked the first consecutive quarterly gains of 3 percent or better in three years. For September, orders for mining and oil field machinery shot up by 17.8 percent. This sector has been posting strong gains after a prolonged period of weakness as energy companies cut back sharply on exploration after petroleum prices plunged. AP Economics
SpaceX Nails Falcon 9 First-Stage Landing SpaceX engineers and on-board software maneuvered the first stage of a Falcon 9 launch vehicle back to a steady, tail-down landing at Cape Canaveral Monday, 10 min. after returning the kerosene-fueled rocket to flight following an ascent explosion on a mission to the International Space Station in June. Success in recovering the stage, after two unsuccessful attempts to land on a barge in the Atlantic, marks a major step toward the long-sought dream of reusable commercial space launchers. While Blue Origin brought its liquid-hydrogen/liquid oxygen New Shepard vehicle back from a suborbital launch to space on Nov. 23, SpaceX’s recovery was the first known landing for an unmanned orbital launcher. SiliconValley venture capitalist Steve Jurvetson, an early SpaceX backer, tweeted “Congrats @SpaceX for landing the rocket back on land!!!! Incredible!!! Like Going ‘From An Old Flip-Phone To An iPhone X:’ New Weather Satellite Promises Quantum Leap In Forecasting This nextgeneration weather s at e l l i t e — known as Joint Polar Satellite System-1 — promises “a leap in data collection and quality equivalent to going from an old flip-phone to an iPhone X,” said meteorologist Ryan Maue of weather.us, a meteorological firm. Polar satellites like the JPSS-1, which orbit the globe from poleto-pole 14 times a day, are considered the backbone of the global observing system. According to the National Weather Service, 85% of the data flowing into their weather forecast models come from polar-orbiting satellites like the one that will this month.

“We’re pretty excited about the launch,” said Joe Pica, director of the weather service’s office of operations, who added the spacecraft is designed to last about seven years. Several duplicate satellites are in the pipeline in the decades ahead, he said. The new satellite will also deliver critical observations during severe weather events like hurricanes, tornadoes and blizzards and is designed to help improve forecasts three-to-seven days ahead of a severe weather event. “Using polar satellite data, we have been able to provide emergency managers with more accurate forecasts, allowing them to preposition equipment and resources days before a storm,” said Louis Uccellini, director of the weather service. “JPSS will continue this trend,” he added. With JPSS-1, the threat of a “satellite gap” due to aging satellite fleet should be allayed. “For the better part of a decade, scientists and policymakers have been very concerned about a gap in polarorbiting satellite coverage of the Earth due to delays in launching JPSS-1 and the obvious aging or potential failure of older birds in orbit,” according to Maue. “We have luckily avoided any gaps.”

Several instruments aboard the satellite will provide detailed observations of temperature, air moisture, ice, snow, fog, wildfires, precipitation and ozone around the world. Maue said that without data from polar satellites, “weather forecasts would noticeably suffer leading to more forecast busts, wayward hurricane tracks and more difficulty in preparing for

If the launch is successful, the satellite will be fully functional in about three to six months, Pica said. The JPSS-1 spacecraft was built by Ball Aerospace in Boulder, Colo. Autoliv And MIT AgeLab To Collaborate In The Research Of Autonomous Vehicle Systems Autoliv, Inc., the worldwide leader in automotive safety systems, signs research agreement with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology AgeLab. The two-year long research collaboration aims to develop a semi-autonomous vehicle prototype that demonstrates the future of humancentered artificial intelligence in the automotive space. The mission of this research collaboration is to provide for the development of artificial intelligence systems that understand and manage the state of the driver to create a safe and enjoyable experience in semi-autonomous vehicles. At the core of the research effort, is the development and real world evaluation of deep learning algorithms that enable effective communication and transfer of control between human and machine. This includes sensing driver gaze, emotion, cognitive load, drowsiness, hand position, posture, and fusing this information with the perception of the driving environment to create safe, reliable vehicles that drivers can learn to trust. “We are looking to lead the world in the application of state-of-the art deep learning methods for
semi-autonomous vehicle systems in a way that ensures the human being is the core focus of every algorithm and interface we build,” says Lex Fridman, MIT. “It is clear that the global focus on autonomous vehicles must begin to consider increased investment in human centered vehicle system that support appropriate driver engagement through trusted safety and an enjoyable mobility experience,” says Bryan Reimer, MIT. “We believe that drivers will be traversing the world’s roadways for decades to come as higher levels of automation steadily increases.” “Today, 1.4 million people die in traffic fatalities every year. Investments in vehicle automation such as Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) will increase road safety, but the introduction of assistance technology is not enough. To save more lives, we need to establish trust between the driver and the car’s intelligence. I am confident that this collaboration with leading researchers will accelerate the industry’s ability to deliver future safety solutions,” says Ola Boström, VP Research at Autoliv. House Passes Tax Bill In late November, the U.S. House of Representatives passed their version of a tax plan adjusting the rates for certain businesses and individuals. One Voice has continuously lobbied on behalf of comprehensive tax reform for several years and applauds the House for moving the ball forward. While much work remains, simply passing a bill out of the House is a major victory for those supporting changes to the tax code. The Senate tax writing committee is finalizing its work this week, setting up a vote hopefully by the full Senate the week following Thanksgiving. Both chambers must reconcile the differences between the two bills, which they plan to do throughout December with the stated goal of sending a final bill to the White House by Christmas. While most believe this is an aggressive timeline, it is important to note the sense of urgency among Congressional Republicans and the administration to show significant progress on their economic agenda. One Voice is actively lobbying policymakers to make sure the tax rates also benefit pass-through manufacturers, who make up nearly 75 percent of NTMA and PMA members. One Voice is also asking that lawmakers incentivize manufacturing in America by ensuring the tax code supports businesses that are investing in capital equipment and have significant expenditures that help grow their workforce and capabilities. While the final results remain unclear, a significant emphasis is also on the treatment of income for executives and retirees who for years have worked to build their manufacturing businesses. The current House bill has a number of very generous provisions for
(303) 466-3777 foothillsmachinery.com
manufacturing, especially those focused on investing in domestic production and equipment. The main differences between the House and Senate, as of now, are treatment of pass-through income and the treatment of earnings by those receiving business income vs. individual wages. Other differences between the House and Senate remain on deductions for state and local taxes paid, the treatment of passive income, and for how long the lower tax rates should remain in effect, among other areas. Sources indicate both the House and Senate bills will continue to undergo significant changes over the coming weeks. While there are a number of encouraging provisions in each measure, One Voice is working behind the scenes with tax writers and leadership in both Chambers who are writing the legislation. Experts believe the final bill will continue to undergo significant changes as theWhite House and GOP Congressional leaders seek a compromise measure that can secure enough Republican votes to pass. One Voice encourages its members to continue to reach out to PMA and NTMA through info@ metalworkingadvocate.org or their respective associations to provide their feedback on the tax plans making their way through Congress. One Voice will continue to weigh in with policymakers and keep association members up to date in the coming weeks as we expect negotiators to decide most critical provisions in December. US Manufacturing Has Opportunity to Make Up for Lost Time, McKinsey Says US manufacturing can recover from two “lost decades” but must embrace technology and boost worker skills, according to a report by consulting company McKinsey & Co. “After a surge of growth in the late 1990s, the US manufacturing sector has experienced two decades of erosion in many industries,” McKinsey Global Institute, the company’s research arm, said in the report’s executive summary. “Growth in overall US manufacturing has been slowing for two decades, with little net increase during the most recent decade.” Manufacturers responded by “cutting costs, whether that meant offshoring work, squeezing suppliers, reducing wages and benefits — or going out of business altogether,” McKinsey said. Production workers in manufacturing have had inflation-adjusted annual wage growth of 0.1% since 1990, according to the report. Manufacturing companies need to “step up their game,” McKinsey said. “New technologies will play a large role in determining whether they can compete.”The sector is grappling with Industry 4.0, where digital data and is shared and “connected” devices are managed by smartphones and tablets. The goal is to improve efficiency and reduce downtime for maintenance Some industries are embracing additive manufacturing, where parts are printed from a digital design. Manufacturers have “real and substantial” opportunities “but the United States will have to make up lost ground,” McKinsey said. The company said under a best-case scenario, the value of US manufacturing could increase by $530 billion, or 20%, above current trends, by 2025. McKinsey said changes are necessary to have a chance at that $530 billion. Many plants have outdated equipment “the workforce is aging, and firms are staying alive only by cutting costs and putting off investment,” according to the report. “No one should underestimate the effort it will take to turn things around.” “The US manufacturing sector’s relatively slow pace of digital adoptions has been a drag on its productivity performance,” McKinsey said. “Industry 4.0 can help companies up their game.” The consulting company also said manufacturers need to be more proactive in boosting worker skills.“Workforce apprenticeships will need to be a greater part of the solution,” McKinsey said. “Apprenticeships that pay trainees while they learn on the job are widely available in countries such as Germany and Switzerland, and the model is finally gaining traction in the United States.” McKinsey also urged original Makers of original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) need to improve relations with suppliers. “Over time, seeking out ever-lower bids from suppliers produces diminishing returns,” according to the report.OEMs should identify which suppliers provide the most critical systems, the consulting company said. From Soup To Overtime As business picks up and hiring resumes, the
economists think shaved at least onehalf of 1 percentage point off annual growth in the July-September period. President Donald Trump has pledged to accelerate growth from the tepid 2.2 percent annual averages that prevailed since the recession ended in 2009. The administration was quick to hail the GDP report as evidence that Trump’s economic program was already helping to lift the economy. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross asserted that this GDP report “proves that President Trump’s bold agenda is steadily overcoming the dismal economy inherited from the previous administration. ... And as the president’s tax cut plan is implemented our entire economy will continue to come roaring back.” The administration contends that Trump’s proposals for tax cuts, deregulation and tougher enforcement of trade laws will achieve annual growth exceeding 3 percent in the coming years. Most economists, though, have said they think that even 3 percent annual gains will be hard to achieve for an economy that, for all its strength, is enduring a slowdown in work productivity as well as an aging workforce. Many analysts believe annual growth in the current October-December quarter will amount to a rate of ~ 2.7 percent. Paul Ashworth, chief U.S. economist at Capital Economics, said he envisions just 2.1 percent growth for all of 2017. He suggest that if the Trump administration manages to shepherd at least a modest tax cut measure through Congress, growth in 2018 could accelerate to 2.5 percent. But he said he expects further interest rate increases by the Federal Reserve to slow the economy’s growth to just 1.5 percent in 2019. Harvey made initial landfall in Texas on Aug. 25, and Irma blitzed Florida on Sept. 10.The government said that
while economic activity ranging from energy refineries in Texas to citrus farming in Florida were hurt by the storms, it could not estimate how much the hurricanes had weakened overall U.S. growth last quarter. Private economists have estimated that the storms sapped between one-half and 1 percentage point from annual growth in the July-September period. But analysts say they think much of that lost output will be recovered as the affected areas are rebuilt. The 3 percent annual growth rate for third quarter GDP and the 3.1 percent pace in the second quarter followed a much weaker 1.2 percent annual increase in the January-March quarter. In the third quarter, consumer spending remained solid, though it slowed slightly to a 2.4 percent annual pace from a sizzling 3.3 percent rate in the April-June period. Part of the gain in consumer spending was due to auto sales, which accelerated from August to September — the strongest month this year so far. The biggest drivers in last quarter’s growth were a robust increase in business investment in equipment and an acceleration in companies’ rebuilding of inventories. by Martin Crutsinger, AP Economics Writer A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

Hear About Colorado’s Prieto Battery Founder and CEO Amy Prieto’s brainchild is a Lithium-ion battery technology which may prove to be a game-changer due to its versatility and performance. It’s the biggest bottleneck in the alternative energy value chain as well as the development of cordless devices. Battery storage. The best available lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries lack design flexibility so devices often have to be designed around their batteries instead of the other way around. There’s also an unfortunate trade-off between shorter charging times and longevity. A lot of this has to do with the layered, 2D architecture and chemistry of batteries, including Li-ion batteries, requiring them to be boxy and limiting the speed and direction that electrons can flow. A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

“Batteries right now are limiting almost all the applications that they’re put into,” states Dr. Amy Prieto, founder and CEO. A chemistry professor at Colorado State University with a doctorate from University of California, Berkeley, Dr. Prieto piloted a solid-state, 3D Liion battery several years ago at the CSU Research Innovation Center. Instead of sheets of layered metal, Prieto batteries integrate a copper foam substrate, making its shape much more customizable and providing other functional advantages. All this should amount to shorter charge times, improved safety, greater design flexibility and greater longevity compared to other batteries. To a large extent, the underlying theory has been tested and confirmed. Prieto Battery has secured several coveted grants and partnerships and is well along the path to commercialization. Tests have shown that Prieto batteries can achieve over 1,000 cycles, which is about double what would be expected of a smartphone battery, says Prieto. “We are trying to combine several key battery metrics. Usually a battery is designed to either have a lot of energy density, or be fast, or last a long time. We are really trying to be able to combine fast and long time while still maintaining really good energy density.” Prieto Battery has received two State of Colorado Advanced Industry Accelerator grants and secured high-profile partnerships with Intel (2015), Stanley Ventures (2016) and Moses Lake Industries (2017). Intel and Prieto are working to introduce new rechargeable battery solutions for computing devices. Stanley Ventures, the recently formed venture arm of Stanley Black & Decker, hopes to advance the development of cordless power tools. Because of the amount of power they demand, available technologies don’t cut it. In April 2017, Prieto signed a memo-
randum of understanding with Moses Lake Industries (MLI), based in Moses Lake,Washington. MLI specializes in developing chemical solutions for the semiconductor industry, including high volume electroplating. This is MLI’s first foray into the battery industry. A key part of the company’s mission is environmentally safe manufacturing. For instance, the company doesn’t rely on caustic industrial solutions for production. The company has also held discussions with hybrid-electric vehicle manufacturers, although no formal collaboration has taken shape yet. Prieto also thinks this technology could make cordless construction sites a reality. Prieto’s technology is also applicable to industrial scale storage such as solar- and wind farms. Prieto Batteries will be competitively priced to boot, if their assumptions prove correct. “We intentionally chose a manufacturing method -- electroplating -- that is very amenable to scaling up,” explains Prieto. The chemical composition and large surface area of the anode, another advantage of the battery’s architecture, allows it to store more lithium per unit volume than conventional graphite anodes. It also significantly improves conductivity. Further, solid state batteries have advantages over batteries with liquid electrolytes including longer cycles, higher power density and reduced flammability. To Prieto’s knowledge, nobody else is in the process of commercializing 3D Li-ion battery technologies. “There is, I would say, a lot of urgency and a lot of interest in the field in trying to develop solid state batteries,” says Prieto, who hopes to have some good beta prototypes and thorough testing completed by the end of 2017. The firm has eight patents issued and 19 pending, representing six families of patent filed in the U.S., Europe, Japan, Korea, and China. CSU Ventures, the university’s tech transfer office, has been instrumental in developing an IP strategy. Prieto Battery’s patent attorney is also a trained chemist. “We have taken a very different approach than most battery startups,” Prieto states. “The conventional way to try to do this in the U.S. would be to raise a really large amount of capital and build a facility from the ground up while you’re trying to develop prototypes. We’ve tried to flip that around in that we tried to raise only what we needed to get to functional prototypes and then use really key partnerships to expand our team. I think that’s working really well.” Prieto also credits the “incredible support” of local investors and CSU for helping to attract high-profile strategic partners. She sees this technology as a game changer. “In three to five years I hope that you’re buying power tools and computing devices that have Prieto 3D Batteries in them. By the three year mark I would like to have a formal partnership with one of these auto manufacturers we’ve been talking to.” by John Garvey A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

the company successfully lured just a handful of small accounts from China. “There was a corporate mandate: We take cost out,” says Zimmerman. “It was an automatic attitude. ‘Sorry, Mitchell Metal Products. You can’t even compete.’”

In 2012, that started to change. Today, 8 percent to 10 percent of Mitchell’s volume comprises jobs captured from Asian manufacturers, a number Zimmerman expects will rise to 25 percent in five years. The increase is part of a tide of production flowing back to U.S. shores. In 2014, the number of American manufacturing jobs heading overseas and the number coming back reached rough parity, according to the Reshoring Initiative, a nonprofit based in Kildeer, Illinois. In 2016, the United States added a net positive 30,000 manufacturing jobs as a result of reshoring, that organization reports.

Why U.S. Manufacturers Are Turning Their Attention to ‘Reshoring’ Just two years after Tim Zimmerman learned American manufacturing was fleeing overseas, he tried to bring it back. In 1990, Zimmerman, then the new salesperson at contract manufacturer Mitchell Metal Products, persuaded a maker of kids’ furniture to repatriate its production of hinges from China to his employer’s Merrill, Wisconsin, plant. “What boosted our effort was Tiananmen Square,” says Zimmerman, now co-owner and president of the $12 million company. Mitchell couldn’t match Asian prices, but the uncertainty the political protests caused made his prospective client nervous. Zimmerman encouraged the furniture maker to conduct a risk analysis and calculate the financial exposure of missing a quarterly shipment. The numbers won the day. Working with Mitchell, the company began receiving parts shipments every three or four weeks, compared with quarterly shipments from the Chinese supplier. That stoked the customer’s growth, and it shifted more production to Mitchell. But Mitchell benefited less from that early reshoring effort than did its client. Some percentage of those jobs return in-house, as corporations like Ford and Boeing boost production at their domestic plants or open new ones. But small and midsize companies frequently offload at least some production to others. A study of close to 900 reshoring companies found that roughly 60 percent bestow their repatriated business on U.S. contract manufacturers or other third-party vendors. “I think U.S. manufacturers have learned a lot since the 2008 recession,” says Zimmerman. “Before, they had a lot of cash tied up in processes that were not fully efficient.” Widespread improvements in things like inventory management, Zimmerman says, “have set the stage for companies to effectively reshore.” The most common explanation for an increase in reshoring is rising costs in China, where wages for manufacturing jobs tripled between 2005 and 2016, according to Euromonitor. But disenchantment with offshoring is broader than that. Savings, for example, are often less spectacular than anticipated. Companies that focused on a per-piece rate may
have missed a slew of additional costs, from shipping to auditing to travel. (The Reshoring Initiative offers a free online tool that helps companies calculate their total cost of offshoring.) In addition, “there is a recognition of risks that people did not recognize when they first offshored,” says John Gray, an associate professor at Ohio State University. In a study conducted by Gray and two other researchers, small to midsize companies cited a litany of reasons they had chosen to bring home production. Among them: Asian factories’ use of unapproved suppliers or components, finished products that differed from samples, poor quality, intellectual property theft, and lack of responsiveness to problems. Customer expectations have also changed since 2001, when China’s entry into the World Trade Organization ratcheted production east. “The customers want it now,” says Harry Moser, president of the Reshoring Initiative. “Amazon can deliver it today or tomorrow, which means Amazon has to be able to receive inventory very quickly if there’s a surge in demand. If you are getting the product from somebody here, then that supply chain is feasible.” Kathleen Sarniak, the CEO and of Jeannette Specialty Glass, has won back some customers’ offshored business by building organizational muscle where her Asian competitors are weak. The 65-employee company, which is based in Jeannette, Pennsylvania, makes glass for use in commercial and industrial light fixtures. In 2003, 30 percent of that business waltzed off to China. Sarniak made up some of the loss by creating a branded line of glass sinks, a new category not easily replicated overseas. When

the housing market crashed in 2008, she aggressively wooed the few lighting customers that still kept some small-volume work at Jeannette to bring back larger jobs they’d offshored.

Like Zimmerman at Mitchell Metal, Sarniak drilled down on cost of inventory, buying a 60,000-foot warehouse in 2010 where the company stocks large customer orders and then ships as needed. She also significantly beefed up its R&D and quality assurance functions, areas in which Chinese manufacturers often lag. Team members visit customer locations--something overseas producers can’t do--to help improve efficiency on their assembly lines. They also handle troubleshooting. As a result of her efforts, five customers have reshored substantial orders to Jeanette, and Sarniak recently landed two new ones bringing back production from China. One of those accounts may amp her company’s growth by 30 percent. “It was costly, but we’ve made a lot of changes that allowed us to compete,” says Sarniak. “If you find out what is not being offered by the Asian vendor, then you can offer it and move ahead.” Offshore companies do maintain one significant edge over their U.S. counterparts: They are more likely to produce complete products, soup to nuts. “When they went to China, a lot of U.S. companies did not want to do their own assembly because of all the language and legal and other complications,” says Moser. “So it was advantageous for manufacturers there to develop a complete capability to take over a whole project.” Source: Leigh Buchanan, Inc. But a reassessment of manufacturing processes, the impact of weather damage at NASA’s Michoud assembly facility in New Orleans, and “issues with manufacturing and supplying” the associated service module being managed by the European Space Agency prompted NASA to issue the new launch forecast Tuesday, the agency said. The Space Launch System rocket is being built by Boeing, Orbital ATK and Aerojet Rocketdyne. Orion is farther along in its development, having been first contracted to LMSS in 2006 as part of the now-defunct Constellation deep-space program. The version of the capsule used in the next test flight is currently undergoing tests at LMSS’ headquarters southwest of Denver in tandem with the ESA service module.

NASA Is Now Eyeing 2020 For The Next Space Flight Of Colorado-Developed Orion The first test flight of NASA’s Orion deep-space capsule atop the agency’s giant Space Launch System rocket could slip back several months to June, 2020, though NASA believes it still will be able to launch the mission in 2019.
The first bell-shaped Orion capsule flew in late 2014 without astronauts aboard on a four-hour mission that launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida, lapped the planet and splashed down in the Pacific Ocean. The high-profile test, considered the biggest NASA mission since the space shuttle era, verified the flight worthiness of Orion’s structure, propulsion systems and other features. That test flight launched atop a Delta IV Heavy rocket made by Centennial-based United Launch Alliance. The next Orion orbital flight, called Exploration Mission 1, will be the first launch of NASA’s larger SLS rocket. SLS uses four RS-25 rocket engines adapted from NASA’s space shuttle fleet and is designed to be the powerful booster stage ever built. It’s meant to send astronauts aboard Orion to the moon and, in the 2030s, to Mars. Source: Denver Business Journal
Denver Moves Up On List Of Cities Attracting Travelers In 2018 Denver is moving up on the list of U.S. destinations that travelers want to explore, according to a local company that operates a hotel-booking platform for businesses. Denver ranked No. 7 among American cities that travelers are most likely to explore in 2018, per data from Hotel Engine, which contracts with about 80,000 hotels worldwide for discounted rates and is on pace to generate $50 million in revenue this year.
“While the review of the possible manufacturing and production schedule risks indicate a launch date of June 2020, the agency is managing to December 2019,” said Robert Lightfoot, acting NASA administrator. “Since several of the key risks identified have not been actually realized, we are able to put in place mitigation strategies for those risks to protect the December 2019 date.”
The rankings were determined by counting the number of bookings made via the Denver-based hotel booking platform for each city over the past two years.
The Orion is being designed and managed by Jefferson County-based Lockheed Martin Space Systems Co. (LMSS), a division of Bethesda, Maryland-based Lockheed Martin Corp.
Heading into 2017, Denver was ranked as the 10th-most-likely city for travelers to visit — another sign that the Mile High City is growing in popularity nationwide.

but notes, otherwise, that “all engine options are open – including a clean-sheet design”.
He expresses bafflement that, during his lifetime, there has been “progress in almost every area of human achievement, except airliner speeds” this the more curious since “there are zero scientific barriers to supersonic flight”. And one more thing needs to be decided: the name of the airplane. Scholl has one epithet firmly in mind, but that is not due to be revealed until next year.

NASA Funds Continued Development Of D8 Airliner Concept
Blake Scholl, founder and CEO of Boom, is here at the show. Despite Emirates Airline recently declining to show an interest in supersonic air travel, the founder and CEO of Colorado-based Boom, Blake Scholl remains convinced that Dubai could become a hub for Mach 2 air travel if the company’s 55-seater design enters production as both a business jet and a small airliner. Speaking at the Dubai Airshow, Scholl was able to point to progress along the long and tortuous road towards planned 2023 service-entry, with the launching of the process of selecting a production site; and the recent hiring of aerospace experts to handle relations with the U.S. certification authorities. These appointments herald the start of the program’s second stage: design A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

Satellite Star tup Lands At Denver University Campus A Denver aerospace startup formed to make small satellites will house its manufacturing and satellite operations center in a new building scheduled to open in July on the campus of Metropolitan State University of Denver. The 10-employee company says it’s adding 16 jobs with an average salary of $130,000 and planning 15 student internships once its downtown campus headquarters opens. The company had been close to leasing manufacturing space in Centennial when conversations with MSU ledYork to commit to being on campus instead, said Dirk Wallinger, founder and CEO. “Once we began talking with the university and discovering what kind of university they are, it made more and more sense,” he said. “The opportunity to engage young talent early and help train that next generation of engineers was particularly attractive to me.” York Space Systems is a year-old satellite manufacturing company specializing in small and medium-sized satellites. It plans to have up to 15,000-square-feet in MSU Denver’s Aerospace and Engineering Sciences building for small satellite manufacturing A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

and engineering, and a center for operating its satellites in orbit. The 142,000-square-foot building is on track to open in July. “This partnership is a manifestation of our belief that we create publicprivate partnerships where students gain theory and practice, and our partners have the opportunity to advance their own companies,” said Stephen Jordan, MSU Denver’s president. “Having the opportunity to work with York Space Systems as they greatly impact Colorado’s Aerospace industry is an exciting opportunity not only for our students but also faculty, and the community.” Having space in the $70 million facility will give theYork capacity to make between 150 and 200 satellites a year, Wallinger said. York’s full-time employees will start out being about 80 percent of the staff using the space, with the remaining 20 percent being students and interns helping the company while applying the advanced manufacturing techniques, software development and aerospace engineering skills their learning in MSU’s aerospace program, Wallinger said. Being centrally located with easy access and having college-campus amenities around should help York recruit people from across the metro area to its growing staff, Wallinger said. York’s first satellite is expected to launch later this year under a research and development partnership with the U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command. York Space Systems’ business model is to make satellite bodies and technology more affordable for commercial customers . The Metro State building would likely have space forYork to expand into as its business grows, and Wallinger envisions having a campus connection regardless of how big his company gets. “We kind of always will want to have a footprint in a place like MSU,” he said. Meet Boeing’s Latest Next-Gen Fighter Concept Boeing is out with new concept ar t for the U.S. Air Force’s nextgeneration fighter jet, a sleek, tail-less design featuring conformal engine inlets and what looks like a manned cockpit. The latest image, provided to Aviation Week, looks more like a fighter-
bomber than a pure fighter. The tailless airframe, thin swept wings and conformal shaping suggest a stealthy, penetrating aircraft that may be able to fly supersonic. The silhouette of a pilot inside the cockpit indicates Boeing is banking on the Air Force sticking with at least an optionally manned platform for the future capability. Boeing’s new vision comes as the Air Force begins to solidify a plan for the next generation of air superiority, alternatively called “sixth-generation fighter,” “next-generation air dominance,” F-X,” and most recently “Penetrating Counterair” (PCA). The service just kicked off an Air Force Scientific Advisory Board (AFSAB) study that will begin identifying key capabilities needed to fight in the battlefield of 2030 ahead of a formal analysis of alternatives (AoA) for PCA. he Air Force’s “Air Superiority 2030” initiative identified a hybrid PCA capability as key to ensuring air superiority in future denied battlespaces c haracter ized by sophisticated air defense systems and counterair technologies. But so far, the Air Force has only described PCA in relatively broad terms. We do know that PCA will be a “family-of-systems,” and will likely include some kind of next-generation stealth fighter to operate alongside and eventually replace Lockheed Martin’s F-22s and F-35s. It may also incorporate the new arsenal plane concept, where multiple sensorshooter aircraft direct fire from an aerial bomb truck crammed with munitions. Compare Boeing’s newest iteration of the notional fighter capability with an older rendering the company has previously released: The AFSAB study, announced Oct. 27, will begin to define the key operational characteristics of a PCA capability. The pre-AoA effort will examine likely adversaries, identify and assess relevant technologies, and
determine the timelines and investments needed to mature them. The study aims to provide a technology roadmap to support developing and fielding of an initial PCA capability in 2030. AFSAB plans to brief top Air Force brass on the results of the study in July 2017, and publish a report in December 2017. The study will support a formal AoA, which is expected to kick off in January.

MIS, which has been working on Vulcan in its California lab for about two years, is also at work on an in-space metal casting as well as other metal production capabilities that could play an important role in NASA’s human deep-space exploration aspirations, including the proposed human-tended, lunar-orbiting Deep Space Gateway (DSG). The casting technology has been tested in brief zero gravity conditions attained in parabolic aircraft flight, Rush said. It is not yet certain when Vulcan might launch to the station. As it matures, additive manufacturing promises to diminish costly resupply missions and requirements to initially launch and provide enclosed storage volumes for critical spares parts aboard spacecraft developed for human deep-space missions.
Metal 3D Printing Capabilities Readied For ISS Made In Space (MIS), the Silicon Valley 3D printing startup, is fashioning a metal fabrication capability for the in-space production of aluminum, stainless steel and titanium components. The Vulcan Advanced Hybrid Manufacturing System is one of several additive manufacturing advances the company is working on with grants issued through NASA’s Space Technology Mission Directorate. It could be integrated with the company’s Additive Manufacturing Facility (AMF) launched to the International Space Station (ISS) in March 2016 for the production of polymer parts and components. “Vulcan is unique in that it’s a hybrid additive and subtractive system,” said Andrew Rush, the company’s CEO. “We can additively manufacture a metal part to our desired shape. Then we have a subtractive milling head on the same system. It’s a robotic head that will go back and machine out the part to really, really precise tolerances. This allows us to provide some really precise, high-quality and useful objects in space.” So far, the ISS-based AMF has manufactured more than 170 parts, roughly 3 by 5 by 3 in. in size, though A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

If 3D hardware were to become a feature of the DSG, or one of the commercial space station concepts that might succeed the ISS, it could be operated at times when astronauts are not aboard to assure mission planners their spacecraft are sufficiently stocked with critical components. MIS also is working on an upgrade to the space station’s AMF, which will robotically remove 3D parts from their build tray, allowing production to continue when astronauts are busy with other duties. How Three Colorado Manufacturers Are Closing The Skills Gap The manufacturing industry is currently at a crossroads with baby boomers retiring at a high rate and not enough younger workers coming in to replace them. Many lament the decline in manufacturing in the U.S., but the fact is that it’s still a tremendously important industry. In a reversal of past trends, a significant amount of work previously done outside the country is now coming back (a process known as “reshoring”). While workers in past generations intentionally chose the profession knowing it could provide consistent opportunities and good pay, many in recent generations shy away from it, believing the work to be stereotypically dirty, low paying, and unfulfilling. Complicating the labor issue further is the current low unemployment rate: 4.3 percent nationwide, which is marginally higher in places such as California at 4.8 percent and bottoming out in Colorado at 2.3 percent. Low unemployment, combined with other factors, has resulted in a net decrease of 1,000 manufacturing jobs in Colorado in the past 10 years. Today’s manufacturing businesses are stepping up to meet these challenges through efforts to counteract negative stereotypes and develop employees who will provide the needed skills now and in the future. Three Colorado companies are using innovative training programs that help them acquire new talent, provide training and other benefits to their employees, and improve the A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

Mikron Corporation Denver As is the case with many manufacturers, Mikron Corporation Denver’s processes have become more technical and complex. The company designs, builds, and tests high-speed assembly machines for other companies. In the past, customers would come in with specifications to be followed precisely. Now, explains General Manager Mike Gunner, “It’s more a set of ideas and computer models,” meaning employees must be more flexible and creative in working with customers to give them the products they want. Finance and HR Director Florencia Saldias says, “They need to use problem solving and think outside the box.” The need for workers to partner with customers more closely involves the ability to use soft skills to anticipate questions and understand reactions. One strategy the company has used to adjust to this shift is a mentoring program that pairs more seasoned workers with newer ones to offer one-on-one training. Another is an apprenticeship program that trains high school students and is heavily supported by both the governor’s office and the Denver Cherry Creek School District. “High school seniors work two or three afternoons per week during the school year, plus vacations and holidays if they want,” says Saldias. “They’re paid, and when they graduate they train for an additional three years to become full-blown mechanical technicians.” Gunner says, “We pay for their community college education, so they can get an associate’s degree as well as a Department of Labor apprenticeship certificate.” The program has been highly effective. “The whole organization has changed by having apprentices. Interaction and communication has increased at every level,” says Gunner. “Plus the students we select are extremely bright and dedicated; they’re the leaders of the future.”
RK RK also faces a skills gap as its work has shifted to increased use of CAD and BIM design. This work requires people with AutoCAD and other software skills to design the products the company manufactures. Executive VP, COO, and co-owner Jon Kinning shared that the company has sometimes resorted to “cannibalizing” from its competition and other industries, and working with third-party recruiters across the country to bring in needed talent at all levels. To address the issue more proactively and collaboratively, RK started an apprenticeship program in 1995. Apprentices come in two evenings per week accompanied by online self-study activities for four years. Program involvement counts toward up to 45 college credits, and participants end up eligible to test for their journeymen license. “This may seem like a long process, but you have to think it through logically,” says Kinning. “If we want those well-trained third-year

And we have to keep in mind that after about 90 days they can be productive members of a team.” The company also benefits from the youthful energy of the apprentices whose average age is 24. Kinning and his brother, who co-owns the company, continue to reward those apprentices after they become regular employees. Last year they established their minimum wage at $16 per hour, and also offer up to two raises of $1 per hour per year and a trade-specific toolkit worth around $350. They additionally provide full medical coverage, a retirement package, and a wellness program. Kinning anticipates that RK will have over 400 apprentices in its program by September 11 when classes begin.
Woodward At Woodward, too, increased automation requires more high-skilled workers. VP of Operations Keith Korasick explains that in the past machines would be programmed to perform a certain task on many similar parts. “Now,” he
says, “the work is more specialized and machines need to be programmed for a certain process. Workers must be able to adjust the machines depending on which parts are being run through. So they need to understand both the manufacturing component and the robotic one.” Korasick runs a program that works with the local school system to get high school students interested in manufacturing as a career path. “Each summer, we have eight interns who work full eight-hour days for about 10 weeks,” he says. “They learn and train in assembly, inspection, and other areas. As they go out into the world they become ambassadors for manufacturing as a profession.” The company also has an internship through Front Range Community College. These interns work 20 hours per week, and Woodward pays 100 percent of their tuition and books. There is no requirement for them to stay on afterward, but only two people have left since 2008. “The rest are still employed with us and are tremendous assets to the organization” says Korasick. “These folks have a great foundation for a career at Woodward because the internship provides them with broad experience within the company, immersion in the company culture, and the opportunity to meet multiple company leaders.” Korasick acknowledged that change is slow, and it’s not possible to replace the experience of the baby boomer generation overnight. “But we’re adapting to the changes,” he says. “We really just need to stay focused on the next generation, and let them know this is a viable career, and that automation is going to enhance -- not replace -- it.” Kreg Brown is an Audit Partner at EKS&H. Autodesk, DMS and Design & Software International Partner To Bring You A Turn-Key Cost Effective Hybrid (Additive/Subtractive) Metal Machining Solution
required. We met the needs of our customers who required high speed machining and typically were manufacturing much larger parts.” DMS experienced success nearly from the onset, and has seen double-digit growth nearly every year since it opened for business. Pat continued, “Our customers’ requirements have evolved over the past decade and a half, and today, their need for tight tolerances matches those typically seen in aerospace parts.” (In fact, many of DMS’ customers today hale from the aerospace industry). Diversified Machine Systems (DMS) is an American designer and manufacturer of 3 and 5 axis CNC routers and machining centers. Today, the company is pleased to announce that its metal hybrid (additive/subtractive) CNC machining center is in production. In fact, the Department of Defense purchased their first DMS Hybrid metal machining center, with 4’x by 5’y x30”z capacity.
Company History Patrick Boller founded the company a short 14 years, ago, in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Today, the company’s CNC routers and machining centers are installed in a diverse number of industries, including aerospace, automotive, thermo-forming, wood working, and architectural, and their customers range from Fortune 500 companies to individual part manufacturers. Thousands of DMS machines (from overhead gantry, to moving table to large format gantry) are installed in 28 countries around the globe today. DMS offers standard machines, but they also enable customizable options, and their machines are frequently used in the rapid prototyping manufacturing process. Patrick launched DMS with little capital, but armed with strong vendor and customer relationships, coupled with a gift for mechanical design and a friendly, outgoing disposition. Patrick himself kids that he heads up the ‘Napkin Office’, as he comes up with new ideas and translates them to napkins, and then his brother Steve turns the napkin design into a reality. Patrick says, “When we opened for business, the machines we designed and built were CNC routers that worked well in the woodworking, plastics and composite industries. When we first introduced our 3 and 5 axis CNC routers to the market, our customers didn’t require the precision tolerances that aerospace and medical metal parts A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

Ed Hilligrass, DMS Executive Vice President and long time DMS team member, says, “Our beginnings in the composites and plastics industries as a CNC router and machining center manufacturer have been instrumental in our being accepted in the Aerospace industry. In order to remain competitive and reduce costs, aerospace companies are producing parts out of materials such as lightweight plastics and composites, rather than metals. The use of strong, lightweight composites such as Fiber Reinforced Plastics/Polymers (FRP’s) and Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastics/Polymers (CFRP’s) are revolutionizing the aerospace industry. Planes made with CFRP wings and fuselages weigh up to 35% less, and are more aerodynamic, stronger, and corrosion-resistant than aircraft built using traditional materials. In addition, lighter aircraft require less fuel to fly, which lowers yearly operating costs. More durable than steel or aluminum, CFRPs are so strong that at one-quarter the density of steel, they are two to three times stronger.” Pat adds, “The use of carbon fiber materials speeds up the production process and reduces manufacturing costs. DMS CNC 3 and 5 axis routers and machining centers are applicable in all facets of the
a few. DMS’ customers value their end product, but they also appreciate the collaborative approach that DMS takes with its customers. Ed says that DMS launched its Advanced R&D center a few years ago. “Our customers have been asking the OEMs to change and adapt. Where in the past, we (and other machine tool builders) built machines and then sold them to customers, today, we work in a much more cooperative manner, and this means more custom products for our customers. They will tell us that they need a complete system that does ‘X’, and we help put this package together.” A ‘package’ isn’t just a machining center for DMS customers today. Pat says, “We bring all of the necessary pieces necessary for a complete turnkey package.”
DMS Software Solution As a solutions provider, DMS had to select a software platform that best suited its customers.Years ago, the DMS team selected the Delcam suite of products, including PowerMILL, PowerSHAPE, PowerINSPECT, ArtCAM and FeatureCAM. Pat says, “We favor the Delcam suite of CAM software, not just because it runs our machines so well, but also, because in our surveys, our customers like it best.”
aerospace fabrication process, from design and development to final construction and fabrication. Our machines are used to create smallscale aircraft prototypes out of materials such as clay and foam during the design process. DMS routers are also employed to cut, shape and drill plastic, metal, and a variety of composite parts used in the cabin, cockpit, and air frame of the aircraft.”
DMS’ Evolution DMS has thrived in an industry that is dominated by large global machining center manufacturers, and it has successfully sold its machines to some of the largest manufacturers in the world, including Boeing, Ford, Autobus, Google, Jaguar, General Motors, and Autodesk, to name
In 2014, Autodesk acquired Delcam. At the time of the acquisition, a senior official at Autodesk, noted, “The acquisition of Delcam is an important step in Autodesk’s continued expansion into manufacturing and fabrication and beyond our roots in design. Together with Delcam we look forward to accelerating the development of a more comprehensive Digital Prototyping solution and delivering a better manufacturing experience.” Shortly after Autodesk acquired Delcam, Pat had the opportunity to work with a software solutions provider he had known for years, Design & Software International, Inc. (DSI). Today, his team works closely with DSI’s Jon Caliguri and Jon’s cousin Mike Caliguri. Pat says, “My father and Jon’s father worked together for years, and when DMS had the opportunity to work with DSI, we jumped on it.” DSI is a Master Reseller for Autodesk.

Today, the DSI team works extensively to support DMS’s customers with all Autodesk software solutions. Pat says, “We feel that the Autodesk acquisition of Delcam has been very positive for our customers. Through Autodesk, we’ve transitioned our customers to a subscription model of software, and this better aligns the software with customers’ requirements.” He adds that the larger Autodesk software design staff is facilitating the development of many new products, and many are particularly beneficial to the millennials.
DMS Hybrid Additive Technology DMS Project Manager Nathan Dix says, “Our core machining methodology has long been subtractive, and a number of our customers are now exploring the additive process to streamline their business. Our newest offering, the DMS Hybrid Additive machining center, uses an advanced GMAW process for additive, and uses standard aluminum welding wire feedstock. Our solution is extremely cost-effective compared with other metal additive machines on the market because it doesn’t require a vacuum or fully inert environment to operate. This also allows very large-build envelopes. For example, this additive technology could be integrated with one of our large 15’x40’ sidewall gantry-style machines.” He continued, “We’ve designed and built a hybrid machine that builds off of our standard DMS router platform, with the same motors, spindle and controls, and this enables us to manufacture our additive machines more cost-effectively than competitive offerings. The machine also has relatively high build rates. We are seeing products built on the DMS additive machines that are deposited up to 10 times faster than laser powder bed alternatives.” Nathan says that DMS customers who are manufacturing molds and tooling for composites are particularly excited about DMS’ hybrid additive/subtractive metal offering. The team at DMS estimates that its hybrid platform can greatly reduce the cost associated with molds and tooling. In one customer application, a large mold that would have required custom molds to be made, cast and machined could be built in a fraction of the time on our hybrid machine. DMS’ hybrid additive metal machine uses Autodesk’s PowerMill Ultimate and PowerINSPECT software packages. DSI’s Jon says, “PowerMill is an expert CAM A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

software for complex high-speed and 5-axis CNC machining, and it is offered in 3 packages, Standard, Premium and Ultimate. The PowerINSPECT package can read all mainstream CAD formats and uses the design intent from the CAD file to help make inspection programming faster and easier. Using the CAD file makes graphical reporting easier to visualize and understand, and allows much more effective collision detection for automated measurement.” Pat says that PowerINSPECT software installed on the DMS machines is particularly valuable due to the large size of parts DMS’ customers are often building. It means the difference between inspecting the part right on the DMS machine versus purchasing a very costly CMM that is capable of inspecting large parts.
